WELCOME In what has been an incredibly challenging couple of years the thoroughbred industry has not only survived but prospered. Nothing has been easy, but the racing industry has been embraced by fans and helped provide vibrancy to those affected by restrictions and lockdowns around Australia. Quality bloodstock has been in strong demand across the country during the pandemic and we believe the catalogue we have assembled for the 2022 Perth Yearling Sale will be well received by buyers. Sale graduates continue to race with great distinction, whether that be here in WA, across Australia or indeed internationally. The exploits of horses like the lightly raced Group One Oakleigh Plate winner Portland Sky continue to shine a light on the quality being bred and sold in the state. Unfortunately the 2021 Magic Millions Pinjarra Ladies Raceday was conducted with no crowd due to COVID-19 restrictions. The WA 2YO Classic winner on the day, Ex Sport Man, went on to win the Karrakatta Plate and was crowned the state’s champion of his age. In February 2021 Gemma’s Son made history at Pinjarra by becoming the first winner of the Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy after capturing the 2YO Classic the previous year. These results were very pleasing with both horses being sired by local stallions. Hopefully all breeders had a successful breeding season and I would like to wish all vendors and buyers a prosperous and enjoyable 2022 sale in the beautiful Swan Valley. After a very vibrant sale in 2021 we look forward to maintaining that forward momentum this February. And just remember the selling action commences on Valentine’s Day – so please, share the love!

SKY’S the limit for ELITE breeders When Perth Magic Millions graduate Portland Sky crossed the line locked together with Celebrity Queen in the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield last February, it was a good moment for Western Australian racing - in particular for the Anderson family of Anita Vale Stud.
And an historic moment, Portland Sky a high class member of a family with which the Andersons have been breeding for six generations - purchasing their latest good horse’s fifth dam Sheltering in Sydney in 1982 as a yearling.
It was them, in fact, that steered Robert and Ann into the wonderful world of racing and breeding.
Unfortunately the daughter of the little known Valley Forge (his best runner from just two small crops was the Rockhampton Cup winner Firetint) did not display a great deal of natural talent, failing to threaten in five starts at Bunbury and Pinjarra.
As first timer luck would have it, the filly named Mardiarna would be pretty decent - winning five of her 17 starts including three in a row over the winter of 1976.
It was not an auspicious start for Sheltering but when buying fillies, Robert and Ann always had in mind what they could offer long term. And, being a member of a classy northern hemisphere family (one which produced amongst other topliners the oh so popular Sea Pigeon), Sheltering looked to be a good broodmare prospect. Sadly she died young having produced just the one winner - the lightly raced Sovereign Shade who broke her maiden at Pinjarra. Her sire was the terrific stallion Beau Sovereign, resident of Coral Park Stud - run by Glenn and Kathy Money who have been great, long time friends of the Anderson family.
12
“Ann was offered a share in a Copenhagen filly Glenn and Kathy had purchased in New Zealand.”
As everyone who has quickly tasted racing success knows, it is rather addictive and Ann was hooked. “I was pretty busy with my career as a lawyer at the time,” Robert said, “so it was really Ann’s thing at first.” But her enthusiasm proved contagious and soon Robert was also enjoying the thrills that racehorse ownership offers. And it was not long until the couple decided to venture into breeding - upon hearing that trainer Vern Brockman was heading to the Adelaide sales, asking him to look out for a filly with “the building blocks” of broodmare potential. Back to that filly - Ancient Sky- later, for now continuing the story of Sovereign Shade from whom Anita Vale (the stud
named after Ann’s mother) bred two city winners; Raja Boy (by Is It True) and Northern Beau (Poliuto). And one filly, the talented Sweepshot (by Dr Grace) who would win five of her 21 starts, earning black-type with a Gr.3 Hyperion Stakes third during her final campaign. It was with just her second foal that the Andersons would strike gold with a Scenic colt they presented at the 2004 Perth Magic Millions. Purchased by Len Morton for $36,000 and christened Scenic Shot, the tough and talented bay bolted in with his Belmont debut in February, 2005 - the start of a career that saw him win another 16 races, amassing in excess of $3 million in prizemoney with three wins at the elite level... the Mackinnon Stakes and two runnings of the Doomben Cup. Also competing in the country’s most famous races, the W.S Cox Plate, the Melbourne Cup and the Caulfield Cup, Scenic Shot certainly did his owners - and his breeders proud. One of Sweepshot’s daughters retained by Anita Vale was the unraced Bletchley Park mare Line Of Flight (who sadly died just recently) whose first foal - her only daughter - is the Shrewd Rhythm mare Sky Rumba who filled placings at four of her 12 starts. After considerable research and consultation with pedigree analyst Kristen Manning (the Andersons always putting plenty of thought into their mating plans), the New South Wales based Deep Field (Newgate Farm) was chosen as a suitable first mate for Sky Rumba. Sadly the resultant colt died shortly after birth but there was enough confidence in the match for a second crack - and in September 15, 2017 Portland Sky was born. Taken by the colt from day one, the Andersons were proud to present him at the 2019 Magic Millions, Robert recalling that “I told everyone I came across that he was the nicest colt we had ever taken to the sales.” “He was always a beautiful horse, he just had that look.” At first a little disappointed at only just meeting the reserve, the Andersons were however happy to see the colt end up in good hands - Mornington trainer Matt Laurie. Impressive from the get-go, easily winning at his Ballarat debut in August 2020, Portland Sky won the Gr.3 Red Anchor Stakes at just his fourth start - two runs later taking out the Gr.3 Manfred Stakes and then the Oakleigh Plate, a prize he shared with fellow Western Australian Celebrity Queen. Such was the strength of his form that Widden Stud were quick to secure him for stud duties, Portland Sky to stand at either their Victorian or NSW base in 2022; something which has the Anderons both excited and exceptionally proud. “It is a big thrill,” Robert said, quite in awe of the considerable accomplishments not only of Portland Sky but of his whole family... one from which Anita Vale have also bred the dual Listed winner London Line and the Gr.3
Robert & Ann Anderson
placed Magic Millions Perth 3Y0 Classic winner Flight Path. And there is more to come with Line Of Flight in 2020 producing a lovely Iffraaj colt whilst her daughter Sky Rumba was recently served by Darley’s Blue Point; her 2020 foal being a colt by Universal Ruler. The latter is a member of Anita Vale’s 2022 Perth Magic Millions draft (being sold under the Dawson Stud banner); one which the Andersons are justifiably excited about also putting through the ring a full brother to the promising Spirited Session and a Universal Ruler colt out of the city winning Blackfriars mare Ancient Hope... all “both strong, correct colts who are very hard to fault.” The Ancient Hope colt takes us back to the story of Anita Vale’s foundation mare, Ancient Sky who Vern Brockman purchased on their behalf back in 1981. “Vern said from the start that she was not a very robust filly but he thought she would mature into a good broodmare type and he was right, she certainly had those building blocks that we were after.” Showing enough speed to win a couple of races, Ancient Sky - daughter of the Standish Handicap winner Aurealis and the Wakeful Stakes placegetter Blue Nile - retired to

stud in 1983 and three decades later the Andersons are still so grateful that she came into their lives. For it was her granddaughter Ancient Song who would provide Anita Vale with their first Gr.1 winner, the wonderful sprinter who won nine races including the 2003 Salinger Stakes down the famous Flemington straight. A pivotal moment for Anita Vale.
“It was a great feeling,” Robert said, remembering that he felt the same way that he has with subsequent big race successes - the satisfying feeling that they were doing things right, “that it was all worth it.” The Andersons have also bred from the Ancient Sky family the dual stakes winners Royal Lott and Danzig Beau and are proud that others have also enjoyed sucess with the family, taking much delight cheering on Zabeel’s multiple Gr.1 winning son Preferment - Ancient Sky’s great, great grandson. “Can I boast a bit and say that this is now one of the better families in the stud book?” Robert said - and we will certainly allow him some bragging rights as he and Ann are generally so humble about their success. And what success it has been for relatively small breeders, the Andersons (also breeders of the Gr.3 Champions Fillies Stakes winner Le Plunge... dam of this season’s city winner Porphyrio) only ever having six of seven mares at a time. Another of whom is Elite Ateates, recommended to them by bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy. “A couple of our older mares were nearing retirement and we wanted to keep our numbers stable so we asked Damon to keep a look-out for us. He had Elite Ateates on his books, she was priced a bit higher than what I hoped but Damon and Ann were adamant that she was the mare for us!” Purchased in foal to Street Boss, Elite Ateates produced a handsome colt who the Andersons were looking forward to taking to the Perth Magic Millions. Everything was going smoothly with his preparation, right up until the presentation of his xrays which were, in Robert’s own words “catastrophic!” Withdrawn from the sale, the colt required surgery to remove bone chips from a knee. Into work, he immediately showed plenty of talent but an operation on his other knee was required - the number of chips needing removal leading Robert to joke that “whatever is left must be steel!” Because since then the horse has raced soundly and well, in fact very well - Elite Street winning eight of his 17 starts including last year’s Gr.1 Winterbottom Stakes. Making

it two Gr.1 Anita Vale bred Gr.1 winners for last season, a remarkable achievement. And Elite Street has been in great form this year as well, over the spring winning three in a row - the the Listed Crawford Stakes, the Gr.3 Colonel Reeves Stakes and the Gr.3 Prince Of Wales Stakes. “He’s a beauty!” Robert said. A great deal of the pleasure derived by the Andersons with their horses is the fact that it is a passion they share with their daughter Kyffin who works tirelessly at Anita Vale. “As I talk I can see her walking up the lane with feed buckets in hand,” Robert laughed, proud of Kyffin’s achievements - the enthusiastic horse woman spending time building her skills at Coolmore Stud and in Ireland with Timmy Hyde, now working part time at Anita Vale and part times as a veterinary nurse at Larkhill Vet Clinic. Kyffin’s partner Simon also helps out when required and so all the work at Anita Vale is done by the family, Robert joking that “if we can’t get it done it doesn’t get done!” It is work they all enjoy... “it has to be fun,” Robert said, “and the day it stops being fun is the day we stop.” Though that doesn’t look like being any time soon, Robert and Ann still passionate... “horses always give you something to look forward to.” n

The Beginning OF THE BY CHARLOTTE GEOGHEGAN
In Winter 2018, I was lucky enough to pass the interview process and be welcomed into the Magic Millions family and take up my role here at Magic Millions WA.
32
Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, I was unfortunately not from a horse racing background other than trips to the race track (Phoenix Park in particular which is no longer there) and my family’s yearly bet on the Grand National or when we drove to my grandmother’s we would usually pass horses roaming freely in front gardens ready for their next sulky race. A sulky for those of you that are unaware was originally a light, open, one-horse, four-wheeled vehicle with its single seat for only one person fixed on its shafts. They used to race quite regularly outside of the towns, thankfully an operation that is now banned!
had purchased land in the Swan Valley to build a state of
In July 2018, I was certainly a long way from home, a bit out of my depth but committed to the task at hand. I have always been a determined learner and love being thrown in the deep end. And deep end it was, with David Houston out of action due to an accident overseas…. Let’s not talk about that!! I immediately realised that not only had I landed into an incredible company but also an incredible industry here in WA full of people that I could really get along with and understand! To me the best way I can describe the people involved in the racing industry are exactly like the Irish, hard workers and so extremely welcoming and patient!

I certainly seemed to have arrived at the right time, there was great excitement within the company and the breeding industry especially, here in WA. Magic Millions
sales were getting closer and the new Magic Millions Swan
the art auditorium that was very much needed in Western Australia. For years the sales were held at Belmont and although it had served its purpose, a stand-alone complex was very much needed. And so my adventure with Magics began… When I first arrived at the property it was a sandpit on one side and a water pit – now known officially as the winter lake - on the other side. There were trees everywhere with beautiful red-tailed black cockatoos nesting in them. They still are, if you look closely. We kept their nesting grounds fly past. The race was officially on to get the complex built and up and fully functional by February. But alas, as soon as you need something done in super speed time disaster strikes! Our disaster..the rain!!! It delayed us months, we were unable to start the building of the stables until November and as this was a priority above even the auditorium we were in a bit of deep water. We had no other option but to have them finished as Belmont were now unable to hold our sales, as building work had commenced there. The Valley build was getting further away. As Christmas approached so did our flagship yearling sale

at the Gold Coast which was also going to be a first for me. It was all hands on deck between heading East and making sure the complex had no further delays. With the decision to hold the sale at the new complex, we decided that if we had the auditorium slab down we could at least put a giant marquee on top, we were just needing a guarantee that the barns would be up and the parade ring would be set. A guarantee that we were given! It was exciting but also we left WA with concern as we were not going to be on-site for two weeks and anyone who has built before knows that anything can happen at any time and cause delays. We needed a huge imagination and vision in trying to work out what we needed to hire, what was going to be available on-site and more importantly, how we could make it safe for clients, vendors and staff. We were extremely lucky with our builders, nothing was too hard a task. We arrived back in WA to our barns nearly finished, we began the task of creating the front of house. Craning in the auditorium marquee is certainly something that will stick in my mind, makeshift offices, heaps of bark, plants, plants and more plants. The sense of excitement was beginning to boil. Everyone pulled together! I even recall Brian Nutt varnishing our newly made benches for the parade ring which had just been finished by our beloved Jonesy and Chris Farrell. It was a huge team effort and the sale went ahead with success! I learnt a lot from those few months but the main thing was what a team we have with everyone just wanting the same result! West is definitely best! n

Spotlight ON
SIMON MERRITT BY KRISTEN MANNING
52
Simon Merritt of Western Racepix is not the sort of person who likes to be in the spotlight, instead he prefers to be taking photos of those enjoying their moment - such as delighted racehorse owners celebrating victory.
53
www.magi c mi l l i o n s.c o m.au • 2022 PERTH YEARLIN G SAL E
The first lot through the ring at the Swan Valley Complex
"I really enjoy that side of it," he said - "seeing owners go off in the stand, I absolutely love it!" Taking particular enjoyment from the big race days, the culmination of everyone's hard work throughout the year, Simon looks forward to not only the local features but the big days interstate - such as W.S Cox Plate Day. It was one horse who fostered his love not only of that race but of the sport in general, the Western Australian born and bred star Northerly who captured the attention - and hearts - of so many as he raced his way to 19 wins from 37 starts; amassing over $9.3 million in stakes with his nine successes at Group One level. "I travelled to Melbourne twice especially to see him run in the Cox Plate," Simon recalled and he was of course not let down - the Fighting Tiger on both occasions having his nose out on the line. Whilst not hailing from a family with any racing interest, Simon had his imagination caught early and it was after completing a university degree that he asked himself what his passions were, and how he could combine them with a satisfying career. "I loved racing and I loved photography." And so he decided to email the racing photographer Scott Hollands and as fate would have it, he chose just the right moment. "Scott needed someone so I was in the right place at the right time." Enjoying his eight years with Scott, Simon decided to establish his own business in mid-2014, at first concentrating on metropolitan meetings and a few provincials. But now he is state-wide... "from Broome to Geraldton and Albany and everywhere in between!" he laughed. With the help of his much cherished assistants - "I couldn't do it without my amazing staff, in particular Sharon in the office, and Sharyn at the races." Kept busy during the year attending two or three race meetings a week, spending the rest of his time printing and framing, Simon thinks of his job as more of a vocation and such is his love of the sport that he is himself a passionate racehorse owner. Best friends with trainer Chris Gangemi, Simon has shares in around half a dozen horses at the moment and has enjoyed the thrills that a good horse can provide - lucky enough to have been a part owner of the classy Battle Hero. "We purchased him from Bob and Sandra Peters and within six months he was a multiple stakes winner." Three times successful at Listed level - taking out the Cyril Flower Stakes, the Summer Scorcher and the Pinjarra Classic - the son of Stratum also won the Gr.3 Northam Sprint, providing his new owners with plenty of thrills. What was it like for Simon taking photos of his own stakes winner?
54
"Well you have to remain professional but usually there is another photographer on course ready to take a photo of me celebrating after the race!" Simon has attended a few Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sales, both January and the Nationals but Covid has stood in his way the last couple of years. "I thought there might be a problem getting home this year" he grimaced. Simon enjoys the lead-up to the yearling sales, kept busy taking conformation shots around the state ("we are spread far and wide!") before heading to the sales complex to take action shots both in the ring and around the back. "It is nice to shake things up a bit, it is so different to race day - I can get a bit more creative." Self taught with no formal photography training, Simon is an integral part of the Magic Millions team, also working for a number of media organisations, studs, racing clubs and trainers - social media work also an integral part of his business. Though the core of Western Racepix is that one photo that every owner loves to get, that one on the wall - the much treasured way in which we can relive our best racing moments for years to come! n

AMELIA PARK BY KRISTEN MANNING
A growing force on the Western Australian racing and breeding scene, Peter Walsh’s Amelia Park has for the last few years been concentrating on improving their thoroughbred stock and making a bigger impact both at the sales and on the track.
And already the success is there for all to see with the stud’s first major yearling sale topper Samizdat (the son of Not A Single Doubt who caught everyone’s attention at the 2017 Perth Magic Millions fetching $325,000 to the bid of Gangemi Racing) proving himself to be a high class sprinter taking out the Gr.3 Asian Beau Stakes and two Listed events. From the same Amelia Park crop came Lady Cosmology, a home-bred mare who won three of her 14 starts including the Gr.3 Proud Miss Stakes, the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes and the Listed Supremacy Stakes. Working hard on furthering the Amelia Park name since that time, the farm presents a classy 2022 Perth Magic Millions draft, one which racing manager Sharon King is very excited about and we enjoyed catching up with her in the lead-up to the sale...
How would you describe your 2022 Magic draft? It is a very strong, bold draft that for us is the fruition of several years of hard work. These are our first yearlings from the time when we really started analysing our mares and putting a lot of time and research into our mating plans.
66
Which younger stallion represented in your draft are you excited about? We have a filly by Russian Revolution (lot 29 out of the Amelia Park bred Gr.3 Champions Fillies Stakes winner Samovare) who we are excited about. She is out of one of our best mares and I think Russian Revolution is a very nice prospect. There was good hype around him early, the good judges are still on him and now it seems like they can really run.
Which horses in your draft look the best chances to win a Magic Millions 2YO Classic and a 3YO Trophy? We have a filly and a colt who look natural two-year-old types - the Rubick filly (lot 249) out of the winning mare Addie Lane (a Street Cry sister to the triple Group winner Sabatini) is just speed, speed, speed whilst our American Pharoah colt (lot 78) out of a half-sister to the Gr.3 winners Sweynesse and Rimraam also looks an early runner, he is a power-pack. Of the three-year-old types, I would nominate our Toronado colt (lot 141) from the wonderful Marooned Lady family and the Russian Revolution filly.
What are some recent highlights for horses reared at your farm?
What puts the magic into Magic Millions races and sales for you?
After Lady Cosmology (who had her first foal - a Trapeze Artist colt - in August) set the ball rolling we have really enjoyed watching Samzidat’s progress. Peter and I were at the fence at Pinjarra when he won the 3Y0 Magic Millions, it was fantastic! To see him go from sale topper to winning a Magic Millions race was huge.
The fact that it is the epitome of everyone’s hard work. There is a great vibe to the sales and the race days, it all gets the adrenaline pumping.
Who are your favourite stallions? I am a massive Toronado fan, I am quite obsessed with
Samizdat
international pedigrees and just crazy about anything Sadler’s Wells... Lady Cosmology is line-bred to him.
finest families - that of the star filly Special Harmony and the local Group winners King Canute and Redwoldt.
In regards to taking a horse to the Perth Sales I’d always be happy to have a Magnus. He does a great job in Perth, the trainers love him and I love him!
Lot 29 bay filly by Russian Revolution from Samovare (Savabeel) Bred on the successful Redoute’s Choice/Zabeel cross, she is the first foal for a Champion Fillies Stakes-Gr.3, 1600m winner who also won at metropolitan level in Melbourne. She is one of three stakes winners produced by the outstanding broodmare Sambar - that daughter of More Than Ready well represented by two current season Grup winners; Tiger Of Malay and Samizdat. This is an historic Australian, one which has produced the big race winners Dark Eclipse, Denman, Preserve, Kiamichi and Taj Rossi.
If you could pass one golden rule to young staff, what would it be? I agree with something our farm manager Sarah Brown often says - “start early, finish late and never stop asking questions.”
What’s on your bucket list? To breed Peter’s first Gr.1 winner... he has had twelve seconds!
AMELIA PARK’S DRAFT Lot 23 bay colt by Pride Of Dubai from Reveille (High Chaparral) Described by Sharon King as “a really nice, strong colt,” he is the first foal for a good racemare who won four of her 25 starts (two of those at metropolitan level) with a further nine placings to her credit. Reveille’s dam is the stakes placed multiple city winner Europa Point, half-sister to the Listed winner Reprisal from one of Western Australia’s
Lot 76 bay filly by Nicconi from Amelia’s Love (Blackfriars) Half-sister to the promising Tony & Calvin McEvoy trained last start winning three-year-old Speed Lover out of a talented mare who won two of her four starts. Her dam is the fast Group 3 winning juvenile Card Queen who also produced the Magic Millions 2Y0 Classic winner Karuta Queen. And that flashy Group 3 winning, Group 1 placed filly has gone on to produce the stakes winner Eawase. This is a great old Victorian family from which the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1, 1600m hero Vitalic hails. “She is a beautiful filly who is going to be extremely popular.”

AMELIA PARK Lot 78 bay/brown colt by American Pharoah from Angharad (Exceed And Excel) Son of a two times winning half-sister to the Group 1 placed dual Group 3 winners Sweynesse and Rimraam from a high class international family. He can boast amongst his relations the big race winners Fantastic Look, Designed For Luck and Ace Of Aces. Lot 125 chestnut filly by Toronado from Europa Point (Rock Of Gibraltar) Described as being “a cracker with scope and strength,” she is out of a stakes placed multiple city winner whose first four foals to race are all winners including the city winners La Farola and Reveille (dam of lot 23) as well as the promising three-year-old Conegliano who has looked good winning two of his first four starts for the Annabel Neasham stable. As already mentioned, this is one of WA’s best and most popular families. Lot 141 bay colt by Toronado from Harada Queen (Haradasun) By one of the country’s hottest young stallions, this colt bred on a cross of the great mares Special is out of a mare
who showed good talent in only two starts; easily winning at debut and only just beaten next time out. Her first two foals are both 2021 winners including this fellow’s promising full brother, the in-form three-year-old Disengo. This is the same Marooned Lady family as lots 23 and 125. Lot 249 bay filly by Rubick from Addie Lane (Street Cry) Her dam is a lightly raced winning daughter of the Group 3 winning Royal Academy mare Royal Sash who produced six winners including the Group winners Sabatini (also by Street Cry) and Vivi Veloce. Boasting crosses of the great mares Natalma, Almahmoud, Lalun and River Lady, this filly hails from the same branch of the prolific Gondolette family as the Group 1 gallopers Happy Trails and Valley Of Georgia. Lot 274 bay colt Merchant Navy from Bumbasina (Canford Cliffs) “He will need a bit of time but he is a strong colt who proves that his dam is going to be a great broodmare for us,” Sharon King said of this exciting youngster whose dam is an imported stakes placed half-sister to the Group 3 winners Epona Plays and Dolce Strega from the family of GB Champion 2Y0 Filly Flashy Wings. DAWSON STUD BY KRISTEN MANNING
In operation since 2013 (taking over from Evergreen Lodge), Dawson Stud has been set up and is run with meticulous care by Graham Daws.
A wonderful contributor, along with his late wife Chrissie, to the Western Australian racing and breeding scene for decades, the Daws’ stood the outstanding stallion Bletchley Park; for years breeding classy performers. Magic Millions looks forward to presenting their 2022 draft, having a chat with Graham in the lead-up to the sale...
What puts the magic into Magic Millions races and sales for you? Clearly for me it’s the people; their knowledge, their professional conduct and their good sense of humour; all things that make the magic.
How would you describe your 2022 Magic draft?
What’s something your brain tries to make you do and you have to will yourself to do it?
The 22 strong draft are a more even lot at this stage than we have presented in previous years. They show good bone and are mature types with flowing movement.
Well 2021 has been the most terrible time for all and whilst my brain wants to uphold exercise and health, the lack of energy and will remains a major challenge!
Which horse in your draft looks the best chance to win a Magic Millions 2YO Classic or 3YO Trophy? Not easy to single one out but maybe Lot 104, a very strong and well proportioned colt by Bondi out of Choican.
What is something everyone looks stupid doing? Most definitely those silent discos, everyone totally out of sync with others, but who cares, everyone has a good time!
What are some recent highlights for horses reared at your farm? Some of the recent winners bred by Dawson Stud are Kissonallforcheeks (the RJ Peters Stakes-Gr.3, 1500m and dual Listed winner who was such a brave close-up third in the Kingston Town Stakes-Gr.1, 1800m in early December), Apple Schnapps (a prolific recent city winner) and the exciting Hong Kong galloper Sight Success who has been in flying form of late. MOGUMBER PARK BY KRISTEN MANNING
“Our best draft yet,” enthused Fiona Lacey when asked to describe her thoughts on the lovely selection of yearlings being presented at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions by Mogumber Park.
“We have 15 quality yearlings by ten different stallions and there really is something in there for everyone. We are really happy with the way they are developing and we are excited to be presenting them in February.”
Which horse in your draft looks the best chance to win a Magic Millions 2YO Classic or 3YO Trophy? Lot 99, a 3/4 sister to Specialism looks like an early runner who I am sure will be targeted by trainers looking to take advantage of the rich prizemoney on offer. Lot 326 is a precocious looking filly by Rommel and she’s a big chance of an early two-year-old start. It is harder to pick a 3Y0 Trophy winner though lot 54 (by Headwater) is a cracking colt who looks like he’ll make a super three-year-old. Lot 124 (by Toronado) is a late foal who is developing into a high quality colt whilst lot 137 (by Russian Revolution) is a real eyecatcher. Of course the Written Tycoon filly (lot 146) could win either or both!
What are some recent highlights for horses reared at your farm? Our stallion Safeguard setting a new sales record when his colt out of the imported Sinndar mare Kerimba (dam of the stakes winner Cathay Lady) recently selling for NZ$300,000 at the New Zealand Ready To Run; he was purchased for $75,000 from our Perth Magic Millions draft in 2021.

What puts the magic into Magic Millions races and sales for you? The horse... watching our babies go from foals to yearlings and then onto racehorses is what it’s all about. Every year I am in awe of how well these animals cope with all that is asked of them, especially in the sales ring itself, with all the noise and activity – they are superstars!
Who are your favourite stallions and why? Obviously we are very biased with our own stallions (Rommel and Safeguard) because they are part of the family. Rommel is not only a gorgeous animal but he has such a lovely nature and he is a super ambassador for the industry. Safeguard is an absolute professional in everything he does and is such an easy stallion to love.
Lot 228 2021 with Fiona Lacey, Colin Brown & team
If you could pass one golden rule to young staff, what would it be?
Bletchingly and Lunchtime, he is a descendant of the famed matriarch Selene.
Constant observation and attention to detail – look, watch and listen. The horse will give you so much information if you observe them.
Lot 97 filly by Rommel from Cashere Miss (Dash for Cash) First foal for a winning half-sister to the terrific galloper Desert Lashes, a stakes winner of ten races including eight in a row. Her grandam is a half-sister to the Autumn Classic-Gr.2, 1800m winner Silver Glade from the family of stakes winners Fear No Reign, Northstar Command, Angel On High, High Polish, Red Labelle, Strawberry Field, Mimi’s Award and Pellizotti.
What is the most useless talent you have? Ice cream making!
MOGUMBER PARK’S DRAFT Lot 54 colt by Headwater from The Other Harv (Elvstroem) By an up-and-coming stallion who is bred on the same Danehill/Biscay/Nijinsky II cross as this fellow’s dam (a stakes placed multiple city winner), he is a half-brother to two winners. Hailing from the family of the star galloper Strawberry Road, is also from the family of the stakes winners Classic Babe, Passchendale, Danjiki and Silver Samurai. Lot 94 colt by Rich Enuff from Calianco (California Dane) The second foal (the first by So You Think fetched $70,000 last year) for a multiple city winning half-sister to the stakes placed multiple city winner Hurrara. This is a real running family, this colt’s grandam being a five times winning daughter of the fast stakes winner Balcanny, dam of the Group winning sprinters Blur and Shrewd Rhythm. Boasting crosses of the great local influences Biscay,
Lot 99 filly by Safeguard from Castle Queen (Oratorio) A 3/4 sister to the Group 3 placed multiple city winner Specialism, she is the first living foal for a city winning halfsister to the Group 3 placed dual city winner Royal Strata. Her grandam is the two times Group 3 placed metropolitan winner Clarecastle whose stakes placed dam Colorado Belle is a half-sister to the Karrakatta Plate-Gr.1, 1200m winner Dynamic Beau. Lot 119 filly by Rommel from Dual City (Ferocity) She is a daughter of a fast two-year-old city winning halfsister to the WA Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.3, 1400m and Gimcrack Stakes-Listed, 1100m winner Diamond Dash and the Matchmaker Classic-Listed, 1400m winner Metro Miss. WILLAVIEW PARK BY KRISTEN MANNING
Willaview Park has the privilege of kicking off this year’s Perth Magic Millions, proudly presenting the very first lot through the ring. And the stud’s Claire Williamson can hardly wait to get going - so happy she is about the quality of the draft.
“We have been blessed with a great year, we have beautiful pastures and fantastic feed and it shows in the horses, they are all well grown, good-looking horses who have pedigrees to match. We are very excited about them!”
Which horses in your draft look the best chances to win a Magic Millions 2YO Classic or 3YO Trophy? If I had to choose the most likely two-year-old type it would be the A Lot colt (lot 306) out of Hottington. He has the pedigree for it but I am putting him forward on his appearance - he is very mature already; both physically and mentally... he is built to run. In regards to the three-year-old race I’d say the Playing God colt (lot 183) out of the stakes winner Parc d’Amour; he is a very smart horse who has been coming along really well.
What are some recent highlights for horses reared at your farm? Watching our stallion A Lot’s first runner Costume Party win her first start was a big thrill. Her trainer Luke Fernie has done such a great job with her and we’ve been watching every race, biting our nails! We are excited by A Lot’s progeny, they are very athletic types and hopefully he can get a few more winners before the sales get underway.
82
Who is your favourite stallion? Metal Storm. My parents (Jan and Gray Williamson) purchased him for Mungrup Stud when I was very young and I have great memories of my dad working with him. He was a horse of such presence, so strong and big-boned - if you were asked to imagine a war-horse it would be him. He did such a great job at stud and is still a great influence and will be for years to come.
If you could pass one golden rule to young staff, what would it be? Definitely to have respect for the horses, to work with them - not against them. Once you learn that you are going to enjoy working with them... which I do, every day with horses is a pleasure. People who work with horses are lucky people!
WILLAVIEW PARK’S DRAFT Lot 1 brown colt by Oratorio from New Vogue (Dane Shadow) Son of a good racemare, a metropolitan winner who was first past the post on six occasions over sprinting trips. YARRADALE STUD BY KRISTEN MANNING
Ron Sayers and the Yarradale Stud team have plenty to look forward to - and plenty to be proud about - as they head towards a busy 2022 Perth Magic Millions.
With a 27-strong draft, they are understandably excited not only about the quality of the yearlings on offer, but by the different types of stallions from across the country represented. “This is the biggest variety of stallions we have presented for a long, long time,” Sayers enthused, noting that “in the past we have focused very much on our home stallions. We still are very supportive of them but we have also been expanding our breeding programme.” With all yearlings paid up for Westspeed, local buyers have things in their favour with a Yarradale horse and those in the know will recall just how successful the farm has been both in the sales ring and on the track.
We consigned the two highest prizemoney earners coming out of the Perth Magic Millions over the last five years - Ima Single Man and Valour Road. Both are the Karrakatta PlateGr.2, 1200m winners who have amassed in excess of seven figures. (Ima Single Man, racing in great form in Hong Kong at present, has won just short of $1.1 million whilst Valour Road who in early December added to his already impressive record the AJ Scahill Stakes-Gr.3, 1400m has won nearly $1.5 million). Both horses were born, raised and offered by Yarradale.
We threw some questions at Yarradale as we headed towards the sale...
Your thoughts on the first season sires represented in your draft?
Which horse in your draft looks the best chance to win a Magic Millions 2YO Classic or 3YO Trophy?
We have a colt by Harry Angel and two fillies by Lean Mean Machine. We think both stallions will prove popular with buyers; we have been particularly taken by the progeny of Lean Mean Machine - he is producing a great type.
The Street Boss filly (lot 93) is one of the stand-outs on pedigree. Her grandsire sired her close relation Osborne Bulls; her dam is a city winning juvenile and we know that Street Boss can get a two-year-old. In regards to a nice three-year-old type, the So You Think colt (lot 171) is a pretty good colt and another beauty is lot 10, a War Chant colt from a great Yarradale family - he is as good a colt as you’d see anywhere.

What are some recent highlights for horses reared at your farm?
What puts the magic into Magic Millions races and sales for you? It is that one time of year when breeders from across the state all meet up in the one place. So many of our smaller breeders have other things happening - running other businesses, etc, so they are kept busy throughout the year. So the sales and the race day end up being a big
Valour Road
social event, where everyone can catch up. The Western Australian racing and breeding industry is a very friendly one, there is barely anyone who doesn’t get on so they love to catch up over a drink, hopefully having made enough profit at the sales to keep re-investing! It is a great way to mix business and pleasure.
Who are your favourite stallions? We have to say our resident stallions led by War Chant who is a real favourite. He was a horse I highlighted, I really wanted him and worked hard to get him and he has done such a great job for Yarradale and for Western Australia. And he is a long term investment - we have stockpiled a number of his daughters and we are sure that he is going to make a valuable contribution for some time to come.
What is on your racing bucket list? We would dearly love to stand a son of War Chant as he has meant so much to us. And we’d love to keep breeding Karrakatta Plate winners - Yarradale two of the last four and a couple of others as well - Born Priceless back in 2001 and Brave Fortune in 2008.
YARRADALE’S DRAFT Lot 2 bay filly by So You Think from Nordic Gem (Swiss Ace) Second foal (her first, the two-year-old Spicey Gem, has trialled nicely) for a placed daughter of the stakes

This filly is a half-sister to the recent impressive Belmont maiden winner Gambler’s Gold out of a full sister to the triple Group winner Lamasery. Group 1 winner Yell, Anthems and Microphone also hail from this family. Lot 10 brown/grey colt by War Chant from Platinum Star (Gingerbread Man) 3/4 brother to the juvenile city winner Super Stardom out of a winning granddaughter of the Karrakatta Plate-Gr.2, 1200m winner Born Priceless from one of the state’s best families - one which is also represented in the Yarradale draft by lot 315.
