Telemon Thoroughbreds

Telemon Stud’s land has a long history of producing top quality racehorses with the likes of Zoustar and Buffering being sold when it was under the Racetree banner, and Gold Edition when the farm traded as Noble Park Stud. The property is now owned by Dan and Rae Fletcher, who bred Sunlight in partnership with Widden Stud and Qatar Bloodstock, and has been renamed Telemon Stud. They will bring their second draft of yearlings to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2023.

Telemon Stud will present eighteen yearlings including two by their resident sire, dual Gr1 winner Jungle Cat. The fastest son of sire of sires Iffraaj, his oldest progeny are two year-olds and his first Northern Hemisphere crop has already resulted in two winners from his first two runners, while he is yet to have a runner here (at time of printing).

Telemon Stud will offer two yearlings fillies: Lot 555 is a half-sister to Gr2 Champagne Classic placed winner Czarson, out of Wobbly Boots (Show a Heart) who won five of her ten starts, from the family of Gr1 winners Mr Celebrity and Prince Salieri. Lot 688 is the first foal of stakes placed winner of five races, Brook Magic (Hinchinbrook), who comes from the family of Champion 3YO Colt and successful sire Shamus Award and Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Shaquero.

Considering Telemon is the birthplace of Zoustar, it will pay to inspect their Zoustar filly, Lot 783, is out of stakes placed winner of four races, Denpurr, from the family of Joint Top Filly on the Australasian 2YO Classification, Elite Falls, as well as recent WA stakes winner Essential Spice.

Two yearlings whose siblings have already proven themselves on the track include a half-brother to Listed winner Wine Bush and group placed winner Wine Tales, Lot 526, is a Shalaa colt out of Flying Spur mare Vinavion, who is a half-sister to group placed winner My Only Hope from the family of Gr1 winner Love de Tor. A half-brother to Listed winner and group placed My Country is Lot 1027, and this Encryption colt has interesting linebreeding to Danehill.

Bred to run early is Lot 346, being by Spirit of Boom and is the first foal of Choisir mare, Secret Lady, who is a daughter of three-time Listed winner (of 10 races) For Your Eyes Only. Secret Lady was able to win the now $1M Golden Gift as a 2yo and was competitive in both the Magic Millions 2yo Classic and Golden Slipper of her year.

Two yearling colts by first season sire Pierata have exciting pedigrees, with Lot 195 being the second foal of Gr1 placed winner O’Rachael, while Lot 1018 is the second foal of six-race winner Awake the Stars (Redoute’s Choice), a daughter of Gr2 winner My Chicharita, from the family of Le Zagaletta, and recently good two year-old Magneto. First season sire Microphone is represented in the Telemon Stud draft by two yearlings with Lot 933 being the third foal of imported Listed winner Henny’s Princess, a half-sister to Listed winner Noblame; and Lot 1224 is a colt who is the first foal of Brazen Beau mare Regal Romance, who is a half-sister to Gr1 placed group winner Faraway Town, from the family of $1million earner Redwood Falls.

D’Argento’s first crop colt, Lot 367, is a half-brother to Empowerment who has won three of her fourteen starts recently and is out of a winning half-sister to Listed winner Storm Rolling In and Champion 2YO Colt in Macau Trust Me Bet.

Gallop, while Lot 1213 is a filly out of Gr1 placed winner of six races Playtime (Foreplay) who is a half-sister to two other stakes horses and comes from the same family as Gr1 winner Never Been Kissed.

Also in this draft are yearlings by Astern (1097), Churchill (1010), Cosmic Force (1126), Dubious (1177), and Tassort (1032).

What would you do if you sold a yearling for $10 million?

Spend $9million on mares and the rest on the farm.

What is the best horse you have sold through Magic Millions?

Sunlight was above average.

When assessing breeding which influences/key horses do you mainly look for?

Always happy to see superior females replicated. I feel like we’re more relaxed about doubling up on Danehill than most but it has to be in the right place.

Do you still get butterflies as your yearling enters the ring?

Definitely.

What makes Magic Millions at the Gold Coast such a success?

I think the sheer quality of the stock. I see a lot written about hospitality and the destination and where it fits on the calendar etc, but at the end of day the commercial appeal of the yearlings and their ultimate performance are the fundamental driver.

What’s the coldest you’ve ever been?

I remember being pretty cold last year foaling a mare down and watching frost form on my boots. Maybe not as cold as the heart that refused to bring me down a coffee from the house because, of course, “it’s too bloody cold and I’m not coming out”.

Do you prefer fishing or football, details please.

Definitely Football. It’s called “fishing”, not “catching fish”. I don’t mind the latter but don’t have the patience for the former and inevitably give up and retire to the Esky.

Do you play an instrument?

Poorly, so “no”. My mother was a wonderful musician but unfortunately, as with horse breeding, sometimes the progeny are disappointing.

What’s one thing your dogs could say that would completely ruin your image if they could talk?

I’m not too sure: I feel like my dogs would give me a pretty good wrap if they could talk. I’d be very disappointed if they complained about my car Karaoke since we usually call in for an ice-cream on those trips.
