Tyreel Stud

Tyreel Stud continues to build on their impressive legacy with 2022 Gr1 Ranvet Stakes winner and Magic Millions graduate Montefilia. Montefilia’s draft also included Gr2 winner Every Rose, and Listed winner Snickerdoodledandy. Three stakes winners from ten yearlings offered that year. Outstanding. And it’s not a one-off occurrence with three year-old colt Perfect Thought coming from their 2021 draft, and has won two of his six starts to date, most recently in the 2022 Gr3 Carbine Club Stakes.

At the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Tyreel Stud will present a draft of fourteen yearlings. Snitzel colts are all the rage and Lot 757 is the second foal of group winner Crack the Code (I Am Invincible) who won four races, and is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Covertly (dam of Listed winner Detective (Snitze), Gr3 winner So Secret, and stakes winner Secret Link. “A colt who has striking resemblances to his sire. Great balance and a lovely strong action places him nicely in this sale.”

Champion sire Exceed and Excel has Lot 323, a filly who is the first foal of Sally’s Realm (More Than Ready), a winning full sister to upcoming sire Better Than Ready and stakes placed winner Sally’s Day. “In a year where the farm has produced so many great first foals this filly could be the one. From a great family, her sharp looks and speedy action will lead everyone to shortlist her. Being by a sire with only limited offerings will only enhance her appeal.”

Dundeel colt, Lot 469, is out of Listed placed winner Tender, whose first foal is a winner and ran fourth in the Gr3 Gimcrack Stakes. “A striking colt who really takes the eye, show stopping looks combined with athletic movement.”

Deep Field filly, Lot 547, is the first foal of winning mare White Thyme, who is a full sister to Listed winner White Sage (Reset) and a half-sister to group winner of eight races White Moss (Mossman), with both being out of Champion 3YO Sprinter Pay My Bail. “An outstanding result for a first foal. Strength, power and clean conformation. This grey filly will draw buyers to her.”

Three colts by proven sire of 46 stakes winners So You Think include Lot 878, the first foal of group placed winner Folk Dress. “He has inherited great strength and power from this mating. He is an exciting prospect moving forward.”

Gr3 Chatham Stakes Reykjavik’s half-brother is Lot 897, making this colt also a half-brother to stakes placed winner

Tycoon Storm. “A quality, athletic colt who stands over ground.” The second foal of stakes placed winner Spanner Head is Lot 411 and this colt’s second dam was a stakes placed winner of eleven races. “A short-coupled colt who looks mature enough to be going early.”

Spirit of Boom’s colt, Lot 297, is the third foal of River Boss (Street Boss), a full sister to Listed winner Ploverset. “A lovely imposing colt, very mature minded and strong through his body. The type every trainer desires.”

The first yearlings for The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes include Tyreel’s colt, Lot 538, out of winning mare Wanted Diva (Wanted) who is a three-quarter sibling to Rockolicious (Fastnet Rock) from the Canny Lass family. “From the time this colt stepped off the truck he has always struck me as a sharp forward colt. He is constantly improving and it will be fascinating to watch him continue to grow and develop.” Yes Yes Yes filly, Lot 44, is out of winning mare Lanikai whose first two runners are winners, and comes from the family of Gr1 winner River Dove and Captivant. “Such an exciting prospect for this sale. A strong welldeveloped filly who moves with great purpose.”

A filly by first season sire Brutal, Lot 551, is out of Wildenstein, a winning half-sister to Listed Widden Stakes winner Superfly, who is out of Listed winner Allez France. “A very neat and attractive filly who is growing into a lovely balanced type.”

First season sire Zousain (Zoustar) has a Tyreel yearling filly, Lot 27, who is out of winning Exceed and Excel mare Keltara, who is a half-sister to Listed winner Missy Cummings, dam of Gr1 winner Mizzy (Zoustar), making this filly closely related to the Gr1 Canterbury Stakes winner. “First season sires are always a bit of an unknown quantity to us. However, if this filly is anything to go by, we are sold!! Great quality and strength.”

Brazen Beau’s colt, Lot 875, is the second foal of Fly By who won her only start as a two year-old, and is from the family of Gr1 Blue Diamond winner Midnight Fever. “A great Magic Millions prospect, one of the most powerful yearlings in our draft who has evolved into one of our standout colts.”

Lot 920 is a Harry Angel filly, who is the first foal of Happenings (Exceed and Excel), a half-sister to group placed horses Spiritual Pursuit and Bohemian Daisy, out of Listed winner Happy Hippy. “From the day she was born she has always taken the eye. With great flashy markings and a huge physique, she really will command attention.” Rob Sims was happy to share his thoughts on breeding and the Magic Millions Sale with Rénee.

What is the best horse you have sold through Magic Millions?

We have been extremely fortunate to have sold Montefilia through our draft. A sensational filly born on our farm and one of our standout fillies for the year. Bred by one of our first clients to join our newly established farm, Geoff Russell and Bloodstock consultant Stephanie Grentell placed their great faith in our team and its farm and facilities and all parties enjoyed one of the most exciting rides of the thoroughbred industry. The sad passing of Geoff Russell forced the sale of this filly as a weanling which could have been the end of this story for the farm. However, the team’s great pride and belief in this filly was seen by weanling purchaser Dean Harvey who offered to return the filly to Tyreel and have her prepped. A strong sale saw her in the hands of a great bunch of owners and legendary trainer David Payne and the rest can be said is history. A great story for the early days of the farm and a shining beacon of what was to come for future stock of the farm over the following years.

When assessing breeding which influences/key horses do you mainly look for?

We always like to see the influences of some of the great sires and mares down both male and female lines. The physical compatibility of the mating also plays a large part in putting together the jigsaw puzzle that is a mating plan..

Do you still get butterflies as your yearling enters the ring?

Every horse gives you butterflies entering the ring as there is ‘never the sure thing’. It’s still one of the great unknowns as you enter the ring, with all the parades, vets and talk combine to give a result in the sales ring. When that buzz leaves you it’s time to retire!!

What makes Magic Millions at the Gold Coast such a success?

Seeing sales from all over the world it is safe to say this sale is truly unique. No other sale generates such media hype, such industry movement and such involvement. It has the ability to channel all the industry into one sale for 10 days in January. It still is amazing to be a part of and a “must” experience for all in the industry. Be there or be into stamp collecting!!
