Vinery Stud
from 2023 MMGC Magazine
Farnan. Artorius. Exhilarates. Three incredible twoyear-olds, one farm.
Vinery’s record of selling good horses continues and buyers should make sure their yearlings are on their must-inspect list. As well as Magic Millions winner Exhilarates, Gr1 Blue Diamond winner Artorius, and Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Farnan, Vinery’s recent drafts include Listed winner Miss Hipstar, and group placed winner Karacasu as well as countless winners.
Vinery will present a draft of 27 yearlings at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with eight from the first crop of Vinery’s exciting Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Exceedance (Exceed and Excel).
“We are excited about getting the first crop of yearlings by Exceedance to the sales,” said Vinery’s Adam White.
“He was just a beautiful athletic looking yearling himself and his stock are very much in the same mould as their
sire. Being a son of Exceed And Excel, a two-year-old winner on debut, Group winner at just his third start and of course the winner of the stallion making Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes we feel his progeny are very much suited to a sale like Magic Millions. We have an exceptional group of eight in our draft and we can’t wait to show them off. We have a number from proven juvenile families and this will suit the Magic Millions sale. We have a nice colt from Arctic Success, the mare is a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Polar Success. We have another colt from Hallowell Belle who was second in the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes as a two-year-old herself. Yearlings like this are going to be very well suited to this sale and it won’t be a surprise to see them contest the rich Magic Millions races in the future.”
As mentioned by White, Lot 919 is a colt from Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Hallowell Belle (Starcraft), who is a halfsister to group winner Fuddle Dee Duddle (dam of Gr3
Maribyrnong Plate winner Brereton), and to the dam of Gr1 winner Bella Nipotina. This Exceedance colt is Hallowell Belle’s fourth foal, and she’s left two winners to date. The other mentioned by White, the half-brother to group placed winner Roots is Lot 622, a colt from a half-sister to Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Polar Success (dam of three stakes class horses including Listed winner Lillemor).
Other Exceedance yearlings of note in this draft include a half-sister to Champion Older Horse in Singapore What’s New is Lot 263, from Pussycat Dream, a two-year-old winning half-sister to Listed winner Tavy; while Lot 761 is an Exceedance colt who is the second foal of group placed winner Cristal Eyes from the impressive Bint Marscay family. Cristal Eyes is a half-sister to Gr3 winner Flying Evelyn. The first foal of Listed placed Meikas, Lot 105, is a colt from the family of Gr1 winners Greys Inn, Smart Call, and Zeditave.

Vinery's G1 star freshman Exceedance
With 19 yearlings by other stallions in the Vinery 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft, there are several whose pedigrees stand out led by the colt, Lot 595, by Dundeel from Gr1 winner Allez Wonder, who is the dam of two-year-old group winner Kooweerup and Gr2 Tulloch Stakes placed Prompt Prodigy. Allez Wonder is a half-sister to group winner Pretty Pins, as well as the winning dam of Gr1 winner Tivaci who has started his stud career well.
The third foal of Gr1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas winner Risque, Lot 296, is a Written Tycoon filly, while the other Written Tycoon filly in this draft, Lot 763, is a halfsister to stakes placed winner of seven races Star Boy.
The half-sister to dual Gr1 winner Nettoyer (Sebring) is Lot 731, and this Exceed and Excel filly is out of Cleanup (Dehere) who was a two-year-old winner and a half-sister to group winner She’s Clean. Those looking for residual value will love Lot 979, a Snitzel filly from Ivory Rose (Green Desert) who is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Danceteria, from the family of Lope De Vega.
Lot 943 is a Russian Revolution half-brother to Gr2 winner Summer Sham and is from the Redoute’s Choice family, while Lot 828 is a Too Darn Hot filly who is the second foal of speedy two-year-old and Gr2 Blue Diamond Prelude (f) winner Enbihaar, who also ran second in the Gr1 Blue Diamond behind Written By.
Other stallions represented in this draft are All Too Hard (Lot 416), Castelvecchio (Lot 430), Deep Field (Lots 125 and 531), Fastnet Rock (Lot 87), Hellbent (Lot 499), Star Turn (Lot 15 and 645), Toronado (Lots 135, 414, 626) and Yes Yes Yes (Lot 387).
What is the best horse you have sold through Magic Millions?
We have been lucky to have sold some great horses through our Magic Millions drafts. Exhilarates, Farnan, Artorious in recent years. But I would have to say the best horse would have to be Atlantic Jewel.
When assessing breeding which influences/key horses do you mainly look for?
Personally I like to see horses descending from a very good racemare or a mare that has created a terrific family. I think this gives you an increased chance of getting a good horse. But overall I just like to see good active families.
Do you still get butterflies as your yearling enters the ring?
It’s more a case of keen anticipation, like pre-match tension. And it can certainly give you an adrenaline rush when you know you have a popular one coming in.
What makes Magic Millions at the Gold Coast such a success?
The whole carnival atmosphere plays a massive part. Most of us, buyers and vendors are also able to attend while having family there also which makes it very social
Where is the most unusual place you’ve visited?
I’d have to say Machu Picchu was quite unusual as well as being mind blowing. What the Incas did to build that city is extraordinary.
What songs take you back to your teen years?
Sweet Child O’Mine – Guns N Roses
Do you prefer fishing or football, details please.
Football (AFL). Playing it with mates and the comradery that comes with it is second to none.
