here are millions at stake in tomorrow’s Vodacom Durban July, not only for owners, trainers and jockeys but also for the punters who will be chasing for a share of multi-million rand pools – a guaranteed R11 million on the Pick 6 and an expected R16 million on the big-race Quartet. every horse an equal chance. However, one horse really stands out in the R4.25-million Grade 1 race over 2200m at Greyville and that is African Night Sky from the Justin Snaith yard. Based on his run in the Grade 1 Sun Met at Kenilworth in Cape Town last January, he is extremely well weighted and could prove very hard to beat. The Met is run on weight-for-age terms and in that race the gelding finished just two lengths behind the winner. However, as he finished sixth, the handicappers were not allowed to raise his merit rating and that has left him in a very comfortable position for the Durban July. He comes into this race carrying 2.5kg less than in the Met and has already demonstrated his fitness with victory in the Grade 3 Cup Trial over 1800m at this course. As a three-year-old African Night Sky became only the second horse after the great Pocket Power to win all three legs of the Winter Series in Cape Town so everybody knows how good he is. He drawn in the middle of the track which could be ideal as he does tend to drop out early and run on strongly. He will be ridden by Grant van Niekerk who has had a magnificent run of feature wins. Speaking about the Durban July favourite, Snaith said: “It’s all good. He is doing exceptionally well, and looks amazing. He is very fresh, and the race can’t come soon enough.” Once you look past African Night Sky the race becomes wide open. There are many horses with chances and luck is sure to play a part in this 18-horse field. As a rule, when

in doubt go with the class horses and in this case they are Coral Fever and Abashiri who have previously won Grade 1 races. Coral Fever has been superb since trainer Robbie Sage fitted him in blinkers and in three runs has finished second over 1400m and then followed up with victories in the Grade 2 Colorado King Stakes and the Grade 1 Premier’s Champions Challenge, both over 2000m at Turffontein. Last year Marinaresco surprised when he won as top weight and it would come as no surprise should Coral Fever imitate him. Questions have been asked about Coral Fever’s late improvement but Sage pointed out his charge had a knee injury and missed almost a year of racing. He only started racing as a three-year-old and then missed another six months in the summer of 2015-16. “I can’t really say he deserves top weight but that’s what he has been allocated and we just have to live with that,” said Sage. There is the question of whether he will take to Greyville as he appears to be better over a more galloping course. “We will find out on Saturday how he will handle the course. Some horse like it, others don’t. As far as the blinkers are concerned we just put them on him to help him concentrate better.” Abashiri won the 2016 Triple Crown but has not won a race since. However, he was beaten a neck by Coral Fever in the Champions Challenge and is now 0.5kg better off. He has a top jockey in Piere Strydom who will be looking to ride a record

fifth winner of this race. Strydom has expressed the view his mount does not have gate speed and was therefore not happy with his No 2 draw which will become No 1 with the reserve runners out. Trainer Mike Azzie is not concerned as he points out Abashiri won his maiden at Greyville and then ran a 0.30-length third behind Rabada in the Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes over 1600m at the course “He has no problem with the track and he has no problem with gate speed either,” said Azzie. “When Piere rode him last time they loaded him early and he started kicking the gate with his back leg. “I have never had this horse so well.” Gold Standard has also been through the wars with injuries but is said to have come right and could be a threat to African Night Sky. Remarkably, even though he was said to be off-form, his worst run was in the Met where he ran 5.55-lengths behind Oh Susanna. His fifth place run in the Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m was decent. “I promise you he has never been better,” said trainer Glen Kotzen. “He is moving like a dream.“

AFRICA'S GREATEST RACE . . .

What the Trainers say JUSTIN SNAITH It’s all good with African Night Sky. He is doing exceptionally well, and looks amazing. He is very fresh, and the race can’t come soon enough. The most important thing about Elusive Silva is that he is very sound. He has had the prep he should have had last year, where he had to fit in an extra race to make sure he qualified. He has the same chance he would have had if he had run last year, and I fancied him then. Made To Conquer is also very fresh. A very easy and simple horse to train. He can be placed and then switch off. He is still on the upgrade, and having 53kg and the legendary Jeff Lloyd brings him right into it. Do It Again impressed me today. He is going to be a top, top horse. He had a flat second run after a rest in the Daily News but his July gallop was one of the best. With 54kg and Anton Marcus up you just can’t overlook him. Another for whom the race can’t come soon enough. Star Express is very gutsy and hasn’t put a foot wrong in KZN this year. The distance is a question mark, but she is doing well. It will be tough but she has a chance. BRETT CRAWFORD White River is fine and he is doing very well. The gelding definitely improved him. It’s very hard, how do you make a comparison between him and Whisky Baron. Whisky Baron never ran in the July, and never got trained in Durban, so how can I compare it. I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t finish in the first four. PAUL PETER The real Majestic Mambo is back. We’re all very excited, and I can safely say that he has improved immensely on his Daily News run. The crowd will not faze him. He has matured and developed so, so much. I promise you that doesn’t worry me. I’m not perturbed by his wide draw to be honest. I strongly believe he is the best horse in the field and I have no doubts about that, not at all! This horse is working very, very well at home. In fact, Callan (Murray) works him 2-3 times a week. This young man is such a horseman. The only thing Majestic Mambo has to beat is Greyville racecourse. I’m very confident in him and I believe he’ll run a big race. DUNCAN HOWELLS I’m happy with Fiorella and hopeful of a good run. She’s done little wrong, always gives 100% and continues to improve. She was competing at C-Division level earlier this season but has come into her own since finishing fourth in the Grade 1 SA Fillies Classic over 1800m at Turffontein in April. She must have a lively chance under 53kg on that form but it’s a tough ask of a three-year-old filly. The July is a rough race and she’ll need luck in running against older and male rivals to have a say,

but she is on the up. Of course, I have healthy respect for the opposition but my filly is smart and she goes in with a fighting chance. Anton (Marcus) was committed to ride for the (Justin) Snaith stable and Muzi (Yeni) was sticking with Coral Fever so I went through the possibilities with the owner and in Mark Khan we’ve found an experienced rider with proven success at Grade 1 level. MIKE AZZIE Abashiri has the necessary early speed to hold his position on the fence. Piere rode him in his last race which was a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m. The problem is that they loaded him first which is a disaster. He started kicking the back of the gates. If they load him later and he is not left standing for ages he will jump on terms. He will have no problem with Greyville. He made his debut at the course as a two-year-old over 1600m and he won that easily. His second start was in the Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes, again over 1600m, and he ran a 0.30-length third behind Rabada. He has no problem with the track and he has no problem with gate speed either. Everybody knows I didn’t want to run him in the 2016 July because he had won the Triple Crown and had a hard season. Everything was against him and he was only beaten 4.70 lengths. He also pulled up with an injury. He is now two years older and will carry 1kg less. I’ve never had this horse so well and he is in a good space right now. You could say I’m a very happy man. GLEN KOTZEN I promise you Gold Standard has never been better. I’ve not quite had him back to his three-yearold form before but now he is back. He is moving like a dream. I think the three-year-olds are the main dangers this year as they are a strong group. Unfortunately it does not look as if Pack Leader will get in which is unfortunate as he had a very nice weight. He will run in the Betting World 2200 but as a three-year-old he is not well in at the weights. ROBBIE SAGE Coral Fever hasn’t run since winning the Champions Challenge but we’ve just kept him ticking over. We put the blinkers on to help him concentrate better but he is maturing well. He is comparatively lightly raced because he missed almost a year owing to a knee injury. I wouldn’t say he de-

serves top weight but that’s what we’ve been given and we just have to accept it. JOCKEY MUZI YENI It’s the July, it’s always very competitive and you need some luck in running but I wouldn’t want to be on anything else. Coral Fever has been good to me. He won a Grade 1 last time and over R3 million in stakes, so he’s proven himself. I spoke to Mr Sage about adding blinkers after the Sun Met. I felt he wasn’t putting it all in. They’ve made the difference and his mind is on the job now. I know he hasn’t raced at Greyville but I don’t see why he shouldn’t run a good race. There are horses drawn wide who will be looking to get over into a nice position, so that should inject some early speed into the race. I don’t think it will be a fast-run race but they should go an even tempo, which will suit my horse. I’m confident, I have to be. Yes, my horse carries top weight but he’s earned it. He has the form to be competitive and I’m expecting a big run. Obviously I have to respect horses like African Night Sky, Made To Conquer and Abashiri but I’ll be disappointed were I not to fi nish in the fi rst three. MATHEW DE KOCK (assistant to Mike de Kock) Yakeen is very well and his prep has gone well. He has improved a lot since winning the Jubilee Handicap. He has a good draw but the distance is a question mark. However, in the Jubilee he pulled and still saw out 1800m at Turffontein so that makes us believe he will stay 2200m at Greyville. His ability will be tested in this race. CANDICE BASS-ROBINSON We must not forget Rocket Countdown won a Group 2 – he won the Selangor. He’s a nice horse coming into the race in good shape and in good form. Obviously, the first time he is going over the trip, but I don’t see this trip being a problem. I think pedigree-wise, he’s bred to go that trip. He certainly shows at home that he will see out the trip. He travelled up well and he put up a very good July gallop. He is drawn well, and he is pretty much an outsider in the field, but I’m quietly confident that he will run a good race. It’s a very open July this year. I think without Justin Snaith’s favourite, African Night Sky, whatever beats that horse will win the July. Among the rest of the horses, there is not much between them, and I think

whoever is in the right place at the right time and who is faster on the day – it’s that type of race this year. I think the Greyville track will suit my horse. He’s got a good turn of foot. Yes, we are hoping for him to run into the money. GEOFF WOODRUFF Secret Potion is a talented young filly who stays well and is only just now coming into her own. I thought her last run was very satisfactory, finishing three lengths off a good quality open field in a Pinnacle Stakes over a distance well short of her best. She is doing all the right things at home. Her previous run in the Oaks was a super win, but I’m very happy with her last run – that was over 1400m. PAUL LAFFERTY I think Dark Moon Rising is going over the right trip. Anthony Delpech and Anton Marcus both said I will never train a better staying horse. He is very well, with 53kg, good draw, top jockey at the moment. I think he will definitely be a factor. It doesn’t look like there will be much pace, but the more pace the better. JOCKEY WARREN KENNEDY I’m confident Dark Moon Rising will run a big race. His final workout was very light and he is doing extremely well. He’s a very good-paced horse and he’s ready to go. He will see out the distance without a problem. I have got no doubt that he will do the 2200 and he will actually enjoy it. He will be running on strongly at the finish – but I also feel that African Night Sky is probably the horse they all have to beat. But our horse is doing very well and I’m expecting a big run from him. You need a bit of luck in the July and a bit of a clear run and that sort of thing. With a little bit of luck he should be there in the firing line. I definitely think he is going to run into the first four. JOCKEY S'MANGA KHUMALO We're in it to win it and I’ll be giving my all on Matador Man. At the end of the day in a race like this you need things to go your way, and I'm hoping it all does. He has a very good turn of foot, that’s his biggest advantage. His previous form speaks for itself but I think he still needs to prove himself over further. His last run was the furthest he’s ever gone so there’s a question mark there. His last run suggests he could stay but his No 15 draw won’t help him. He simply doesn’t jump. He’s always been very, very slow and trying to run on from the back in an 18-horse field isn't easy. You need the right gaps to open and that’s not guaranteed.

rainer Mike de Kock will have just four runners participating at this year’s Vodacom Durban July meeting at Greyville tomorrow and two of them will be running in the Grade 2 Durban Golden Horseshoe over 1400m. He will saddle Soqrat and Barahin who hold the top two positions on the bookmakers’ boards. Betting World have priced up unbeaten Soqrat at 1-1 while Barahin, who ran fourth on debut but has since won his next two starts, at 4-1. Australian-bred Soqrat has been incredibly impressive when winning his two races and more importantly, the form is working out. On debut he beat Victor Forth by 3.25 lengths and last Sunday the runner-up looked way above average as he flew up late to beat Tudor Manor going away by 0.75 lengths after looking well beaten with 200m to run. Soqrat’s second run was over 1400m at Turffontein and he was some five lengths off the pace turning for home and was held up by Randall Simons. But when asked for an effort Soqrat put daylight between himself and the opposition to beat Cyber Special by 4.20 lengths. He is nicely drawn at No 4 for this event which is important over this course and distance and once again Simons will take the ride. Barahin was all at sea in his first start but got an inkling of what he was supposed to do

late in the race but when he did, he flew up to run a 1.35-length fourth behind Louis The Seventh. This son of Gimmethegreenlight was far more alert on his second visit to the course and easily beat White Moon by two lengths. He then travelled to Greyville to contest the Listed Gatecrasher over 1400m and when Bernard Fayd’Herbe asked for an effort he sprinted clear to beat Green Haze by 3.25 lengths. While the bookies have made Soqrat a clear favourite, Mathew de Kock, assistant to his father, is not sure which of the two is the better horse. “Soqrat is a smart horse. In time he will probably be stretched at a mile (1600m) so this distance is ideal for him. “Barahin, on the other hand, will be better over further. It’s hard to judge which of the two is the better. “I certainly do not see the gap between the two as wide as the bookmakers are making it.” While Barahin is drawn wider at No 8, he does have the advantage of having raced, and won, over the course and distance. It is interesting that the handicappers have backed up De Kock’s comments as they have rated both runners at 98. Soqrat, however, looks more precocious than Barahin and as a result he is taken to beat his stablemate. Cue The Music is third favourite at 9-2 and the only other horse quoted in single figures and is the best handicapped runner as he has a merit rating of 107. He won his first three starts with ease but when tried over 1200m for the first time was caught close home by Van Halen so there has to be a question of his ability to stay 1400m. Suggested bet: Exacta 13x2.

Nooresh to wear the slipper Jockey Nooresh Juglall came back to South Africa to ride at last year’s Durban July meeting and came away with a victory in the Grade 2 Golden Horseshoe on Purple Diamond. He could come away with another winner this year, but in the Grade 2 Golden Slipper for twoyear-old fillies when he rides Captain’s Princess for trainer Candice Dawson. This daughter of Captain Al has only raced twice for a win and a third place but both races were pretty impressive. She beat Firdoas, who was fancied for this race but has been withdrawn, on

debut and then finished a threelength third behind Ronnie’s Candy in the Grade 2 Fillies Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein. She has the benefit of jumping from No 1 draw which is a massive advantage. The Tobie Spies yard always has a great run with their twoyear-olds so one-time winner Miss Khalifa must have a winning chance, especially with Jeff Lloyd up. Sean Tarry-trained Celtic Sea would have been the obvious selection had she not landed up in No 13 draw. It will not be easy for S’manga Khumalo to get her into the race. Suggested bet: Quartet: Float 6x10 with 1,3,4,7,13,14.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the Listed Greyville Convention Centre Handicap over 1600m on the turf is the return of Investec Cape Derby winner Eyes Wide Open. Trainer Glen Kotzen has said his charge would be aimed at the Grade 1 Champions Cup later in the month. “Look, you can’t beat class, but this is not his race,” said Kotzen. “This is just a prep run going forward into Champions Cup.” That could give the edge to Copper Force who loves this course and will be having his third run after a rest. He is well drawn at No 5 and has Bernard Fayd’Herbe is the irons. Eyes Wide Open should be fit enough to follow him home and no doubt Kotzen will be looking for a forward showing from Hugo Hattingh’s runner. The other runner with a big chance is Perovskia. Suggested bet: Eachway on Copper Force.

VISITING: JOCKEYS FLOCK TO JULY IN JOZI MEETING

Richard Hannon

Dillon could get Tirzan to score

Champion trainer Alan Greeff has a strong hand with four runners in Race 6 and top event at Fairview today, but the one who is likely to lead the stable’s attack in the 1400m Champion Juvenile Cup (Listed) for two-year-olds is three-time winning filly Madame Speaker with champion Greg Cheyne aboard. This daughter of Pathfork followed up a runaway maiden win with three smart runs in feature events. She beat her male stablemate Alfeo decisively into second place over 1200m. However, Alfeo did turn the tables on her next time when she was a runner-up to him over the same distance. But, in her subsequent outing, she ran on strongly to score by 0.75 lengths from March Music. Cheyne takes over from Teaque Gould who was aboard in the fi lly’s six runs, and it will take a good sort to deny her a feature double. However, Madame Speaker will have most to fear in Yvette Bremner-trained March Music who followed up that second with a 10-length maiden win when ridden by champion apprentice Lyle Hewitson again. The pick of the others are Alfeo, National Park and Born A Bully. Greeff and Cheyne could also strike in Race 5 with three-time winner Another Night who contests a Pinnacle Stakes (F&M) over 2000m. This four-year-old comes off two bright runs – the last of which saw her step out after a rest and finish a close third over 1900m. She is unlikely to miss this time over the extra distance. Next best are Silver Goblet, Chit Chat, Peach Delight and Patchit Up Baby.

ith most of the top jockeys riding at Greyville on Saturday when the Vodacom Durban July meeting will be staged, those not in action in Durban have chosen to enjoy the July In Jozi. One of those making a rare visit to Turffontein is Donovan Dillon who these days has been riding primarily in the Western Cape. He has managed to pick up some decent rides at Turffontein where they are riding on the Standside track, the best of which could be Tirzan in Race 6, a MR 82 Handicap over 2000m. This Joe Soma-trained runner is performing at the top of his game right now having won four of his last

Kranji Friday

Turffontein Sunday

Noah From Goa Larry Foley Singapore - A real wild card lurks in the Kranji Stakes A - Race 6 today with South African-bred NOAH FROM GOA making his much anticipated Singapore debut. This 5-year-old gelding won at Group 1 level in his homeland before some solid form - albeit without success - in Dubai. Now with Ricky Le Grange, Noah From Goa won a recent trial with blinkers very comfortably and might be ready to show his best first up at Kranji. Noah From Goa is carded to be ridden by South African jockey Nooresh Juglall over 1200m drawn 4 with a weight of 56.5kg.

RARE VISIT: Western Cape-based Donovan Dillon has some decent rides at Turffontein on Saturday, with most jockeys riding at Greyville, and Tirzan, in Race 6, could be the one to follow.

five starts, all of them with Muzi Yeni in the irons. Right now one could call Tirzan a 2000m specialist as he has won five times, all over that distance. In his last start this four-yearold gelding beat Shenanigans by a length but it was more convincing a win than the distance suggests. This son of Seventh Rock received a 2.5kg penalty for that win but based on the average merit ratings, his last win was against much stronger company than he is due to meet in this event. He has had four runs at Turffontein and his only placed run was over 1800m but this will be his first race on the Standside track over his favourite distance. Post Grad stands out as the likely danger. Stuart Pettigrew’s charge was a 55-1 outsider in his last run but did well to finish a 2.40-length fourth behind Gambado over this distance, although it was on the Inside track. Mike de Kock saddles Wheel Of Time who finished a 3.25-length third behind Tirzan at the Vaal

and is now 2kg better off. That is unlikely to be enough to reverse the placings but he did give away two lengths at the start. Dillon has picked up two very nice rides for Chesney van Zyl in Races 1 and 2. Bold Eagle went into the Grade 2 SA Nursery at Turffontein as an unbeaten three-time winner but was outpaced and could only manage a 1.70-length third behind William The Silent. He tries 1400m for the first time which should suit him but on that Nursery run he is held Sean Tarry-trained Cirillo. However, if you go back to an earlier meeting Van Zyl’s charge has the edge. Bold Eagle would have benefitted from a short break and could give Dillon an early winner. In Race 2 he rides Railtrip who has some decent form but is likely to find Tarry-trained Return Flight too good. After finishing second in his first start behind Running Brave, Return Flight has won two races by a total of 19.45 lengths and looks the best bet on the card. Chase Maujean will have the ride.

Top Rank a five-star bet

Ken Nicol It’s back to plain fare on the Turffontein inner track on Sunday after the banquet of Vodacom July Day. But for those prepared to wait a five-star bet presents itself in the last race. Geoff Woodruff ’s Top Rank was an impressive debut winner at the Vaal in April. Then this Mogok colt made his return in an ultra-strong Graduation Plate where the average merit rating was 91 over this course and distance three weeks ago. Due to run last on paper, he stayed on well to only go down 2.3

lengths in fourth place. Both winner Royal Crusade and runner up Full Mast are Group 2-placed, and the latter is to run in the Grade 3 Betting World 2200 at Greyville on July Day, so that was an eye-catching performance to say the least. He ran miles above his merit rating in that company, and in a handicap off his mark of 74 from a good draw should have this field stone cold. Raymond Danielson’s mount is likely to be a warm favourite here, but can be safely bankered in the exotics, and also anchored in doubles and trebles. Trip To Paradise is a consist-

ent place getter, and can come out best of the rest. Ghost Rider may have flopped at Scottsville after an easy maiden win but is worth another chance. A good Eachway value bet is Ilha Da Var in Race 6. This Roy Magner-trained filly likes this track, and has been ultra-consistent of late. While in a competitive race, she should be right there again, and has regular rider Ryan Munger up. Lily Starlette, River Ayre, Ladies Club and Rebel’s Idol will all put up resistance though, as this is the usual wide open low level fillies handicap.

Well Done Fox backers set for Sandown celebrations London - Listed honours are up for grabs at Sandown today in the Dragon Stakes, where Well Done Fox gets the vote. This Acclamation colt was a hot favourite on his Newbury debut in April, suggesting he had shown juvenile king Richard Hannon plenty at home, but he was ultimately well held in fifth place. He let his supporters down again at Salisbury next time, but was only narrowly beaten by Rumble Inthejungle and made no mistake at third time of asking at the same venue. Well Done Fox looked set to have major say in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot last month until his effort petered out and with that form having already been well advertised, it would be no surprise to see the youngster make his presence felt. Euginio would not be winning out of turn if he can get his head in front in the Davies Insurance Services Gala Stakes. This Richard Hannon-trained four-year-old has run three fine races in defeat this season, bumping into smart sorts Mirage Dancer and Forest Ranger at Goodwood and Newmarket respectively, before heading to Royal Ascot. Sent off an unconsidered 33-1 chance, he defied those odds to run Monarchs Glen to a length in the Wolferton Stakes, where firsttime blinkers seemingly had a positive effect. The headgear is retained and a reproduction of that effort will see him there or thereabouts. Saving Grace is of interest in the Better Value With The Betfair Exchange British EBF Fillies' Handicap at Doncaster. This daughter of Mastercraftsman did not cut much ice on her sole juvenile appearance at Nottingham last October, but appeared much improved when making a successful start to the new campaign at Lingfield in May. There was very little wrong with her third-placed finish at Haydock last month and she enters the handicap arena on Town Moor from what appears a very workable mark of 80. Iconic Choice can make her experience tell in the Longines Irish Champions Weekend EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes at Haydock, with Wahash another expected to go well at the Merseyside circuit when he lines up for the Betfred Super League Handicap.

he Grade 3 DStv Gold Vase over a marathon 3000m opens up the Pick 6 on Vodacom July Day, with the MEGAPOOL expected to reach a mind boggling R13 million. It’s a tricky start to proceedings though, and a narrow first choice would be Alyson Wright’s three-year-old filly Flichity By Farr. She has placed at Graded level up to 2450m in her last two starts, and gives every indication that this type of trip will be within her compass. This daughter of Go Deputy has won twice at Greyville, and with a mere 53kg and about-to-be champion jockey Lyle Hewitson aboard has definite winning prospects, even against males. Her Betting World odds of 15-1 at the time of writing seem generous, and she is worth an Eachway dabble.

VALUE. Flichity By Farr has been priced up at 15-1 and is worth a bet in the Gold Vase over 3000m at Greyville tomorrow. Picture: JC Photographics Top weight It’s My Turn is a weak favourite, and after his convincing Grade 3 Track and Ball Derby win a fortnight ago can be counted extremely unlucky not to have made the final field for the Vodacom July itself. He also tries the trip for the first time, but has every chance of getting the extra, and with Anton Marcus back up should be right there again. Stable companion Mr Winsome has to be a contender as well.

eThwekwini Sprint

THURSDAY RESULTS

It is all down to Strydom Jack Milner The outcome of the Compendium Insurance Brokers eThekwini Sprint (Non-Black Type) over 1200m could be decided by which horse best handles his debut on the Greyville Polytrack. Three-year-old Dutch Philip is undoubtedly the best-performed runner in the line-up and is also the best-handicapped runner. Had this been a handicap he would to be giving weight all round but as it stands Candice Bass-Robinson’s charge is at least 3kg better off with all opposition. He tends to come from off them so he could battle with the Polytrack and that could give the edge to the Mike Azzie-trained Down To Zero. He is very speedy, jumps from pole position and has Piere Strydom up who certainly knows how to make best use of No 1 draw. His last win over Naafer was very impressive.

The only other danger looks to be Woljayrine who has run well at Greyville but on the turf. He is the the second-best weighted runner and will be ridden by MJ Byleveld. Suggested bet: Trifecta boxed 1,2,3.

While yet to convince he stays this far, he is 4kg better off with It’s My Turn after being beaten 2.25 lengths in the Derby, which has to bring him into the play. Gauteng raider Let It Rain has no stamina doubts whatsoever, and is a serious contender. He has won Stakes races over marathon trips this season at three different tracks, using front running tactics to great effect. He was third in the Gold Cup last year on his only previous visit

The Grade 3 Betting World 2200 gives those who didn’t make the final cut for the July a chance to show up the selection panel, and as always this year’s event is a highly competitive affair. More than half the field here have winning prospects, but a tentative first selection would be Mike de Kock’s Royal Crusade. He was third in the Gauteng Guineas, before being gelded. Coming back in a very strong Graduation Plate, he ran on to get the better of fellow Grade 2-placed youngster Full Mast. At current odds of 6-1 he is a good Eachway chance. Last year’s winner Crowd Pleaser made a timely return to best form when runner-up to July favourite and easy winner African Night Sky in the Cup Trial. Something of a course specialist, he has the early toe to overcome a wide draw, and is the one they are all going to have to get to over the final 200m, and it would be no surprise if he defended his crown. Platinum Prince was only a neck adrift of Crowd Pleaser there, and has placed at Group level in his last four. He deserves a change of luck, and is another who certainly has pretensions to first prize, with Richard Fourie engaged. Fellow Snaith entry Strathdon also a needs to be strongly considered, even though he jumps from the widest draw. Pack Leader is first reserve for the Vodacom July but if running here is another worth huge respect. Dawn Assault and Head Honcho would also make my very long short list in what is a very testing start to the Place Accumulator. Suggested bet: Royal Crusade is a tentative selection in a race where many have chances. Go for an Eachway bet.

here is little doubt the most popular banker on the Greyville card will be Snowdance in the Grade 1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes over 1600m. She is quoted at 5-10 and on paper, and on the turf, looks very hard to beat. She has raced seven times for four wins and three seconds. Her victories include the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas and the Grade 1 Majorca Stakes. She has been beaten in both of her races at Greyville, the first by a short-head to Fiorella in the Grade 2 Daisy Fillies Guineas and the second in the Grade 1 Gold Challenge where she went down 0.50 lengths to Undercover Agent. In the Guineas she clearly was in need of a run while the

CLASS ACT. Snowdance is an extraordinary talent and stands out as the best banker on the card. Gold Challenge was her first run against the boys. This time she has everything in her favour. She is back against her own sex, is the best handicapped runner by between 4.5kg and 11.5kg, is drawn No 1, will be having her third run after the layoff and has Bernard Fayd’Herbe in the irons. “She is the best she has been since arriving in KZN, and you can expect a big, big run on Saturday,” warned trainer Justin Snaith. But while she looks hard to beat there are a number of trainers looking to lower her colours.

Drawn alongside Snowdance at No 2 is Folk Dance who will be ridden by Piere Strydom. This horse does not have a good run with draws but when she does draw well she usually runs well. “Ignore her last run,” trainer Paul Peter commented. “She didn’t travel well and that’s been well documented. She’ll do a lot better, plus she has a top jockey in Piere aboard. “Is Snowdance beatable? Yes, but you have to respect her. She is a very, very good filly and she was beaten by two exceptional run-

Dixon’s Inverroche going in for a cool million Jack Milner After her third place behind Mighty High in the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship over 1200m at Scottsville in May, Mark Dixon-trained Inverroche is all the rage to win the KZN Yearling Sale Million (Non-Black Type) over 1300m at Greyville tomorrow. The race is open to two-yearolds at set weights and after her last performance this Mark Dixon-trained daughter of Ideal World has an unofficial merit rating of 101 which makes her the best handicapped runner in the field. There are two concerns regarding this filly. The first is that she is drawn No 11 which is not a

good place to be over this course and distance. Secondly, the distance has to be a concern. She led for most of the journey at Scottsville and was caught close home by two horses. This time she is running over 100m further so she could just be run out of it late if Brandon Lerena has to make good use of her early on to overcome the draw. In her favour is that most of her opposition are not well drawn either. The two who could run Inverroche out of it are Candice Dawson-trained Givinitsum and Purest Bliss from the Glen Kotzen yard. Givinitsum won on debut, beating My Boi Caloi who went on to win his next start by six lengths. Dawson has engaged Jeff Lloyd

to ride her charge and they jump from barrier No 8. Purest Bliss won a barrier trial and followed up shortly after that with an impressive maiden win at Scottsville but then never got into the race when 10th in the Allan Robertson 10 days later. “That race came too soon,” said Kotzen. “But she’s a serious runner in this event. We only have one horse to beat and that’s Inverroche. Purest Bliss is flying at home.” Richard Fourie rides. Against the Grain found support in his first run at Greyville last Saturday but could only finish fourth. Although still a maiden he could come on with the experience. Suggested bet: Swingers and Exactas boxed: 6x13x14.

There’s more than one way to skin the winner of the Vodacom Durban July. Fillies are often the instinctive choice of female punters – especially those having a once-a-year flutter. But the statistics are not in their favour. In 120 years of the race there have been only 12 female winners. The first was Peerless in 1903 and the most recent Igugu in 2011. The latter was a 2-1 hot-pot favourite, while the previous “girl” winner, Dancer’s Daughter in 2008, was also tipped to win by many. As was Ipi Tombe in 2002. The statistical lesson, of recent times at least, is that a filly can win the July but she needs to be an exceptional galloper. Similarly, many occasional punters are drawn to grey horses. But only five have ever won the July, so it’s lucky for the unwary there are no greys in the 2018 field. Experienced racegoers are put off by horses drawn wide when racing around bends, as at Greyville. But three winners in the past 14 years have come from the widest No 20 draw and several others have jumped from gates in double figures. Can age be the key? Perhaps. Of 20 winners, 11 have been fouryear-olds. Just three three-yearolds and one six-year-old won then. This year’s favourite, African Night Sky, is four. In terms of saddle-cloth numbers, No 9 has been the luckiest for decades. Majestic Mambo carries that tomorrow; he is three years old, has drawn No 19, and he’s not grey. Linking a vivid dream to a winning number derives from the Chinese lottery game Fafi. In Fafi, a king or a left eye represent No 1, a frog and sex No 3, a big stick No 7, a bicycle No 11, ghosts No 13. It’s worth noting that No 4 African Night Sky is linked to a turkey and a fortune, among other things. Second favourite No 8 Do It Again is coupled to a pig and a drunk.
