What to see

Where to find the starring cars and tailors at Concours on Savile Row

About the event

Welcome to the world’s greatest cars, displayed on legendary tailoring street Savile Row. Here’s what to look for while you’re here

THIS IS the second running of Concours on Savile Row, and for 2023 it is even bigger than 2022’s inaugural event, with the use of the space outside the Royal Academy of Arts – a new partner to the event.

Each of the cars and motorcycles on display has been paired with a tailor or retailer on this historic street.

Several cars are from renowned collections, including The Mullin Automotive Museum in California, US and the UK’s Bamford Collection.

Many of the tailors on Savile Row are open to the public and will welcome any questions you have.

You can choose your favourite cars or motorcycles by using a voting slip or scanning a QR code displayed on any of the information stands.

The vehicles will also be judged by youngsters from the Westminster City Lions, in conjunction with Hagerty Youth Judging.

Look out, too, for the craft displays taking place along the Row, and the talks on the main stage (timetable and map at the back of this programme).

Our photographers will be on the look-out for snappy dressers for our Tumi Best-Dressed Competition. You can win great luggage prizes!

Please tag us in your Instagram pictures with #savilerowconcours. Our own Instagram account is at @savilerowconcours.

The Concours is organised by Hothouse Media with The Pollen Estate, historical owner of much of Savile Row, with generous support from Westminster City Council. Hothouse Media publishes Magneto and The Concours Year, along with one-off books and contract titles. Founders David Lillywhite and Geoff Love will be at the event on both days. Concours on Savile Row is only possible due to the collaboration of the partners, tailors and sponsors. Have a great day!

Welcome...

...to Concours on Savile Row, where luxury car design and bespoke tailoring meet

ON BEHALF of The Pollen Estate, we would like to welcome you to the second Concours on Savile Row. We are delighted that you are here to experience the two worlds of bespoke tailoring and automotive design that share so many parallels and historic partnerships.

Savile Row tailors have a longstanding relationship with the automotive industry, having created everything from driving suits and driving jackets to car interiors. What propels this relationship are the attributes that the collector car world and custom tailoring share: craftsmanship, beautiful design, high-quality materials, attention to detail and extremely discerning customers. Over the course of the two-day Concours on Savile Row, we will witness a wonderful showcase of skill and artistry that is at the heart of both industries.

We hope you enjoy this oneof-a-kind car collection and take a moment to visit the tailoring houses

and retailers to truly experience Savile Row and the craftspeople who make it so very special.

We would like to thank Hothouse Media, Westminster City Council, Savile Row Bespoke Association, The Royal Academy and all of the participating manufacturers, sponsors, tailors and retailers. Without their support, this event would not be possible.

Thank you for visiting Concours on Savile Row.

Welcome...

...from the founders of Hothouse Media, Concours on Savile Row organiser

HERE WE are again, for the second Concours on Savile Row – and this time it’s even bigger and better than last year’s.

So, firstly, thank you for coming along – we are delighted that you’re here. We have made several changes to the format this year, the most obvious of which is the extension of the Concours into the area outside the Royal Academy of Arts, on Burlington Gardens.

It’s a huge privilege to have the Royal Academy on board this year, and the extra area outside allows more cars and the addition of a few motorcycles, which we hope you will enjoy. If you haven’t visited the Academy before, please do – it’s a remarkable place.

Throughout the Concours, we celebrate the interlinked worlds of bespoke cars, motorcycles and tailoring – along with the people and the crafts associated with them. Look out for skills demos as well as discussions on the central stage.

To ensure minimum impact on the environment, several of the classic cars on display are running on e-fuels, and some have electric conversions – plus, the entire event

is carbon o set by partner Net-Hero.

Once again, we have The Pollen Estate and Westminster City Council to thank for enabling the Concours – and, of course, none of it would have been possible without the sponsors, partners and tailors.

Enjoy the Concours, and please say hello if you see either one of us.

A stitch in time

FROM CIRCLES as diverse as military, politics and art, Savile Row has historically drawn discerning customers in search of the very best in tailoring and service.

It really became a bespoketailoring hub in 1806, but the area surrounding this famous address already had a long association with the craft, dating back to the 17th century. Robert Baker, maker of the ‘piccadill’ collar, did much to advance the locale’s tailoring reputation. This was then enhanced when a merchant tailor by the name of William Maddox purchased 35 acres of land in East Mayfair in 1622, which included Savile Row.

The estate passed through several generations, and was eventually

Historic beginnings for Savile Row – today the byword for exquisite tailoring and style

handed to the Reverend George Pollen in 1764. The Pollen Estate still owns 38 buildings in East Mayfair, and remains the majority landlord on Savile Row.

From 1790 many of the tailors moved to Cork Street, encouraged by what could be the prototype for today’s ‘influencer’ movement – Beau Brummell, a close friend of King George IV. He was a well known taste-maker of the period, and did much to publicise the tailors’ talents. Eventually the artisans moved to Savile Row, enticed by the locals’ a uence.

A key turning point would be Edward VII’s patronage of Henry Poole & Co. The company – and the Row itself – would shoot to

ABOVE Savile Row style, from Edward VII and the Duke of Windsor to the height of modern-day bespoke fashion.

10 Concours on Savile Row

prominence after inventing the dinner jacket for the Royal name in 1860. Now-famous brands such as Gieves & Hawkes, H Huntsman & Sons, Dege & Skinner, Norton & Sons and Davies & Son also began their long-lasting association with Savile Row during this era.

Fast forward to the beginning of the 20th century, and the street was still sitting at the sharp end of fashion, helped by the arrival of Frederick Scholte’s English Drape for the Duke of Windsor. This Dress Soft style would evolve into the London Cut, featuring a high, small armhole with a generous upper sleeve for exquisite comfort, yet still with a close neck; it would eventually become the house style

for tailor Anderson & Sheppard. New names would flow into the Row in the 20th century, with a raft of mergers and acquisitions. Sir Hardy Amies and Nutter’s of Savile Row would further energise the area’s reputation, encouraging a new audience to seek out the street’s wares, as well as modernising industry practices. This was a period of great expansion, with many tailors o ering ready-to-wear items and taking the Savile Row brand across the world with boutiques in major cities around the globe.

The 1990s saw the Row’s image reinvigorated thanks to the forwardthinking approach to tailoring by the New Bespoke Movement, led by the likes of Ozwald Boateng, Timothy

Everest and Richard James. With London being declared the centre of everything cool, Savile Row was once again back at the forefront of UK style.

The street has continued that fine tradition in more recent years, with the likes of Richard Anderson, Cad & The Dandy and others bringing a fresh take on the art of tailoring. One good example of the street’s ongoing strive for innovation is the addition of the female-founded bespoke tailor The Deck, which caters exclusively for women.

In an ever-changing world, Savile Row continues to be at the forefront of style, paying due respect to its world-renowned heritage but blending this with an innovative take on the future of tailoring.

11

Fit for a King’s coronation

THE CORONATION of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla brought together people from around the world to celebrate a new Royal realm.

Many of the tailors of Savile Row joined in with the celebrations by producing bespoke items to celebrate the event. The changing of a monarch requires insignia to be replaced, too, with some of the tailors being involved with stitching Charles’ Tudor crown, buttons and

monogram on to the ceremonial uniforms that were on display among the Coronation’s 6000-strong military procession.

Dege & Skinner has an historic association with both UK and foreign royalty, holding warrants for Queen Elizabeth II, the Sultan of Oman and the King of Bahrain, and it has long catered to the needs of the British Army and Royal Navy. For the coronation, it produced a miniature uniform for HRH Prince Louis,

incorporating a garter blue doeskin tunic with lace-work embellishment.

Gieves & Hawkes, meanwhile, also got in on the action, preparing many of the event’s ceremonial robes. Tailors were on hand from 4:00am on the morning of the coronation to make any final adjustments ahead of the big day.

You will be able to see many of the special garments made for the occasion in the tailors’ premises over the two-day Concours on Savile Row.

12 Concours on Savile Row
How the craftsmen of Savile Row played a pivotal role in this year’s big Royal event

Sustainability on Savile Row

From

SUSTAINABILITY IS at the heart of Concours on Savile Row. Tailoring may be about fashion, but by choosing clothing that is bespoke, hand-crafted and beautifully made, it’ll last for years, not months.

You don’t simply ‘buy’ a Savile Row suit; it is the beginning of a relationship that will last for as long as the suit does. By its very definition, the fabric of that relationship will have bonds that will endure much longer than ‘fast fashion’, with refinements and alterations to keep your suit looking its best. Essentially, buy a

garment once, to last, and maintain it.

The same approach is true of the cars on display at Concours on Savile Row; each one, whether it uses the latest battery tech or is a traditional internal-combustion machine, has been engineered to last, rather than be replaced after a few years. The Association of Heritage Engineers is a key partner of the event, extolling the virtues of maintaining the skills that can repair and renew. You can read more about the organisation elsewhere in this catalogue.

For 2023, the Concours has further

embraced electric propulsion, with a line-up of classics that boast EV units under their traditional lines, so giving new life to classic motoring style.

However, such conversions can be controversial, which is why we’re also showcasing sustainable fuels courtesy of P1 synthetic fuel. It’s being used in Jonathan Turner’s 3 Litre – the first Bentley to compete at Le Mans. The issue of how cars are powered – past, present and future – is a hot topic, and we’re looking forward to hearing debates play out in the Row’s tailors.

We have also partnered with NetHero, a carbon-offsetting platform for motorists who are looking to become environmentally responsible drivers. Net-Hero is powered by a database of millions of registered vehicles that allows drivers to accurately calculate the greenhouse-gas emissions for both new and classic cars.

After entering the details of their vehicle to calculate its carbon footprint, motorists can contribute to high-quality carbon projects by purchasing from the Net-Hero offset basket, which has been developed with decarbonisation specialist BeZero Carbon. They will then be emailed a certificate and a custom vignette to showcase their new status as an environmentally friendly driver, from as little as 0.2 pence per mile.

As part of the collaboration, NetHero will be analysing Concours on Savile Row itself to see how the event can be as environmentally sustainable as possible in coming years.

The future is all about making the very best out of our resources – and Savile Row’s grand traditions of craftsmanship are at the heart of recyclability and sustainability.

THIS YEAR, Concours on Savile Row is all about the Art of Bespoke – and fittingly, we’ve teamed up with the nearby Royal Academy of Arts to stage both a gala dinner and a seminar on Cars as Works of Art.

For more than 250 years, the Royal Academy (RA) has championed art and design, led by the Royal Academicians – artists and architects elected by their peers in recognition of their exceptional work. The RA is also home to Britain’s longestestablished art school, RA Schools, and each year since 1768 it has hosted the Summer Exhibition –the largest open-submission art exhibition in the world.

The Royal Academy stages free displays throughout the year, as well as touring art exhibitions from around the globe. The RA is currently displaying Souls Grown Deep Like The Rivers: Black Artists from the American South, until June 18. This showcases unique African American artistic traditions and methods of storytelling. The exhibition brings together 60 works from the early 20th

century to the present day, in various media including sculpture, paintings, reliefs, drawings and quilts, largely drawn from the Souls Grown Deep Foundation in Atlanta. This will be the first time many of the artworks have been seen in Europe, and artists include Thornton Dial, Hawkins Bolden, Bessie Harvey and more.

From June 13 until August 20, there’s a chance to take in around 1200 works of art at the 255th Summer Exhibition, while from July

The AcademyRoyalof Arts

The Concours has teamed up with this leading institution for the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts

14 you’ll be able to see an exhibition dedicated to architectural practice Herzog & de Meuron.

Unlike most art organisations, the RA doesn’t receive Government funding; it relies upon the support of visitors, donors, sponsors and the Friends of the Royal Academy. A yearly fee allows free and prioritised access to all exhibitions, preview days, the members’ lounge and more, as well as supports the RA’s work.

Cars as Works of Art – a

THE CAR as a work of art is a notion that has always been hotly contested. The most soughtafter collector models are rare, unique and highly desirable. But does that give them the status of ‘art’? Cars require regular maintenance, are a depreciating asset and aren’t generally protected by copyright law. The car is a functional object, whereas works of art are primarily created for their aesthetic value.

With the most desirable classic cars now reaching tens of millions of pounds at auction and in private sales, now is a good time to consider the evidence, with contributions from leading experts from the collector car, art and investment worlds.

The Classic Car Seminar, in association with Blick Rothenberg, will be held in the Benjamin West lecture theatre at the Royal Academy of Arts on the second day of Concours on Savile Row.

Simon Taylor – author, historian and broadcaster – will moderate the panel, which includes Clive Robertson (head of collector cars, Healys LLP), John Mayhead (market expert, Hagerty), Ian Callum CBE (British car designer), Susan Spash (personal tax and inheritance specialist, Blick Rothenberg) and Julian Radcliffe OBE (chairman Art Loss Register/Classic Car Register).

It all takes place on May 25 at the Royal Academy of Arts, beginning with coffee and pastries at 9:30am. The seminar starts at 10:00am and closes at 11:00am. Come and join us for the round table, and then head over to Savile Row to enjoy London’s most exclusive free classic car show. RM

The Association of Heritage Engineers

Hand, artisan and engineering skills are celebrated at the Concours, which champions the creative crossover between the worlds of automotive and tailoring

CONCOURS ON Savile Row

is the perfect showcase for the process by which beautiful clothing and cars are created – not merely the finished product. As such, it provides unprecedented access to the tailors for a behind-the-scenes peek into how bespoke clothing is created.

As befits an event in which craftsmanship plays a key role, the Association of Heritage Engineers (AoHE) will showcase engineering, fabrication, instrumentation and trimming, hosted by several tailors. This not-for-profit membership organisation was founded and run by Dominic Taylor-Lane to promote and facilitate the cascade of legacy artisan skills through generations.

Classic vehicles were the AoHE’s original focus, but with time the skills-gap issue has gone far beyond that remit. Its scope has expanded to meet demand and, in collaboration with Heritage Crafts (formerly The Heritage Crafts Association), the association is striving to create the equivalent of a ‘National Trust’ for hand, artisan and engineering skills.

By encompassing a broader and

wider interest, the AoHE feels specialist areas can be more resilient and relevant. Its involvement with Concours on Savile Row aims to show exactly that, with upholstery trimming in particular representing a skills crossover between tailoring and automotive, while working with instrumentation shares a clear path with watchmaking, or horology.

You can witness Harry Fraser’s trimming talents at Ozwald Boateng, while Zoe Childs will do fabricprinting and design demonstrations at Scabal. Seth Kennedy, meanwhile, will display his watch-case and engine-turning skills at Henry Poole.

Be sure to watch the three skilled engineers in action, as well as talk with the AoHE’s Dominic Taylor-Lane about the opportunities available in heritage engineering.

Additionally, TV antiques and classic car expert Drew Pritchard will appear on the main stage on Thursday afternoon – he’s an AoHE ambassador and is passionate about retaining traditional skills. www.associationof heritage engineers.co.uk

City Lions

We welcome Westminster City Lions as they discover tailoring, collector cars and the art of concours judging

THE WESTMINSTER City Lions is an inspirational scheme from the council to help 1316-year-olds find out how to get involved in cultural and creative opportunities happening in the borough, working alongside parents, schools and local businesses.

At Concours on Savile Row the City Lions will be meeting and spending time with the tailors, to learn about the many different roles and skills required, in order to give them an insight into the industry.

In addition, the City Lions will not only be able to look around the classic cars and motorcycles, but also experience how to judge them, thanks

to the support of Hagerty’s Youth Judging Program. This was first introduced in 2007, and is now hosted at more than 100 events throughout the US, Canada and the UK.

Intended to bring the world of classics to a fresh, younger audience, the program sees new judges guided through the show field. They interact with owners, and get chance to learn about each entry. They can make notes on supplied score cards.

The City Lions will be hosted by the Savile Row Bespoke Academy at Maurice Sedwell, one of the world’s top tailoring schools. The registered charity provides aspiring tailors with the knowledge and experience needed

for employment in established houses or to set up their own businesses.

The Youth Judges will be led around the Concours cars by Dan Cogger, from Hagerty, and Sarah Bradley, from Concours organiser Hothouse Media, on the Wednesday of the event. They will talk with the owners where available, and examine the classics along the way. The winning vehicles will be announced on the main stage. This is just one way in which the City Lions interact with local events. Past experiences have included film premières, sports and workshops, with an emphasis on talking with the experts about starting a creative career. City Lions gives youngsters access to Westminster’s cultural organisations and the chance to boost their CVs by taking part in talks and work placements with some of the creative industry’s biggest names.

1967 Mercedes-Benz 600

Custodian: Mercedes-Benz Heritage

Hosted by: Henry Poole

This short-wheelbase 600 was George Harrison’s first Mercedes-Benz. It was one of 100 right-hand-drive cars brought to the UK, and he’d put 30,000 miles on it. It was also part of a notorious story in his life; in September 1969 he was accused of hitting a policeman’s legs with it. Eventually he was fined £35 and banned from driving for a year – but by then the car had been sold. Its time since has included 27 years in the care of a Sheffield taxi firm, and near two decades in Denmark. It is now owned by Brendan O’Brien. www.mercedes-benz.com/en/classic

1933 MG K3 Magnette

Owner: Teifion Salisbury

Hosted by: Cad & The Dandy

The MG K3 Magnette was a true world-beater – taking on Maserati on that marque’s Mille Miglia home turf, and winning. No. 5 is one of 14, and was built for the 1934 Mille Miglia attempt. Piloted by Count Lurani and Clifton Penn-Hughes, it finished tenth overall and second in class.

The factory added a pointed-tail two-seater body before the car was raced at Brooklands. It ended up with John Henry Tomson Smith (JHTS), who converted it into a single-seater with MG’s help. The changes were so drastic, it could be seen as a brand-new car. JHTS would compete in the MG up to World War One, selling it during the conflict. He’d later buy it back, restore

it and display it in his MG showrooms. He’d sell it again, but then reacquire it and have it rebuilt one more time. The MG is presented here alongside Chopard, in tribute to the latter’s Mille Miglia series of timepieces.

The CALLUM Designs Vanquish 25 is the ultimate version of the Vanquish, as dreamed up, styled and realised by the model’s original designer, Ian Callum CBE. It sits 10mm lower than before, while the track is 60mm wider. There are new LED headlights, an abstract tartan-design mesh in the bonnet vents, a billet-machined grille and new brakecooling ducts in the front bumper. Owner: Morgan

Hosted by: Dege & Skinner

The Super 3 continues the 113-year legacy of three-wheeled Morgan vehicles, melding the very best of automotive-manufacturing techniques, design tradition and craftsmanship with the latest tech to provide a uniquely exciting driving experience.

Introduced in early 2022, it is powered by a 1.5-litre Ford threecylinder engine that significantly exceeds the power and performance figures of previous Morgan threewheelers. This increased velocity reflects the car’s design language, which draws its inspiration from the jet age – an era in which function influenced form and horizons were broadened.

The 5.9-litre V12 has been upgraded – there’s an extra 60bhp over the standard car’s unit, to produce 580bhp in total. The brakes have also been upgraded with carbon-ceramic discs,

while the suspension has been retuned with Bilstein dampers, stiffer anti-roll bars and new bushing materials.

2023 Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro

Owner: Aston Martin

Hosted by: JP Hackett

The Valkyrie AMR Pro is one of the world’s most exclusive, exciting and fastest track-only machines – unburdened by road or racing regulation, this is the pinnacle of Aston Martin’s design and engineering talents.

At the heart of the car lies a Cosworth-built naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine that develops 1000bhp and revs to a vertiginous 11,000rpm. The Valkyrie also boasts aerodynamic efficiency that surpasses Le Mans hypercar regulations. It’s 380mm longer in the wheelbase, 266mm longer overall and, at the front, has 96mm more track and is 115mm wider in total. This all comes together to provide

2023 Audi e-tron GT

Owner: Audi

Hosted by: Richard James

The introduction of the e-tron GT marks a significant step in Audi’s bold electrification plan. Not only is it the most advanced Audi ever produced, but it’s also the first fully electric model to also be available with the iconic RS badge. As standard it develops up to 530PS, can propel itself from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and has a 296-mile range.

Based on a dedicated fully EV platform, the e-tron GT has been built without compromise when it comes to performance and efficiency. Electric motors on each axle, which deliver quattro all-wheel drive, are powered by an 86kWh battery. As this sits within the floor, between the axles, it provides a low centre of gravity appropriate for a sports machine, as well as a weight

a driving experience far beyond anything seen, heard or felt before. Weight savings come from deletion of the battery-electric hybrid system, plus a host of other fat-trimming measures including ultra-lightweight carbonfibre bodywork, carbon suspension wishbones

plus Perspex windscreen and windows. All told, the Valkyrie AMR Pro weighs a full 300kg less than the standard car, at 1000kg. www.astonmartin.com

distribution very close to the 50:50 ideal. The flat electric drivetrain afforded Audi’s design team a blank canvas. The absence of an engine and ’box allowed them to push the axles further apart to give a striking silhouette and elegant roofline. At 1410mm tall and 4990mm

in length, the model has the dimensions of a classic GT. The car on show will be wrapped in a design created by tailor Richard James. www.audi.co.uk

All Ferraris are special, but this one defines the word. The second of only 40 Series 1 Cabriolets produced, it was ordered by Écurie Francorchamps for Eldé – Belgian racing ace Léon Dernier. His 250GT boasts unique features such as a wraparound plastic screen, removable head restraint, competition bonnet latches, passenger-side metal tonneau and more. To aid the windcheating still further, Dernier specified that the car should have no door handles, and its unique configuration earned it the name Café Racer.

1935 Mercedes-Benz 290

Owner: Private Collection

Hosted by: Gieves & Hawkes

The Mercedes-Benz W18 series arrived in 1933, replacing the Type 350/370 Mannheim series. It brought several innovative engineering features, such as hydraulic brakes, front suspension with a transverse leaf and coil springs, a coil-sprung floating rear axle and, initially, a 60bhp, 2.9litre side-valve straight-six. Factory designs included a four-door tourer, four-door saloon and four variants of two-door cabriolets and convertibles, with several seating suggestions. This Cabriolet A sat 190mm lower than its fellow soft-top models, and it was the most expensive car, too. In 1935 the compression ratio was increased, along with power, to

67bhp. This was marshalled to the road via the rear wheels and a four-speed manual ’box with synchro on the top two ratios. Just under 7500 W18s of all body shapes were built between 1933 and 1937. This particular car was rescued from barn-find condition and painstakingly restored.

1967 Ford GT40

Custodian: Hagerty UK

Hosted by: Huntsman

Ford’s GT40 was the firm’s riposte to Ferrari’s GT racing might. It won four successive Le Mans, cutting dead the Italian’s six-victory streak in revenge for Enzo having reneged on the deal to sell his company to Ford. This car, P/1069, was first shipped to Shelby American to be part of the Cobra Caravan US promo tour. It was put into service in Europe by JW Automotive, with Scuderia Filipinetti entrusted to display it at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show. Filipinetti then held the car hostage over unpaid bills for work on two other GT40s. The Ford later became part of the manufacturer’s UK press fleet. It was displayed once more at the Geneva

Motor Show, in 1969. The car would then pass through several collections, before the current custodian – an avowed Shelby and Ford enthusiast – had it restored to original specification. www.hagerty.co.uk

The Short Wheelbase is the latest project from RML, a name synonymous with British motor sport, but it is far from the first car the firm has produced. RML has undertaken 30-plus whole-vehicle programmes over the years, most of which are ‘white-label’ and confidential.

Few projects stir the soul quite like this, however – and that’s just looking at the specifications. Under the bonnet lies a naturally aspirated Ferrari V12 powerplant with 485bhp on tap, delivered to the road via a six-speed open-gate manual gearbox.

Each car is bespoke, hand-crafted by RML’s highly skilled technicians to create much more than a ‘mere’ restomod. Every vehicle features

management systems. The battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in 20 minutes via a 150kW CCS fast charger. Even though the motive power is all new, so authentic is the rest of the car that it’s the world’s only GT40 EV to be listed in the official Shelby Registry. It

1959 Italia 2000 Coupé

Owner: Marc Gordon

Described as Italian bodywork at its finest and British tradition in sports car engineering at its finest, underneath this car’s flowing aluminium lines is the mechanical set-up of a Triumph TR3A.

Styled by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Vignale under contract to Ruffino SpA Industria Costruzione Automobile of Naples, it was originally supposed to be a proper Triumphbacked project – but new owner Leyland wanted to focus on the TR4, and thus refused to distribute the car.

Ruffino took the Triumph badges off and sold the models independently.

Out of 1000 planned, just 329 of these hand-crafted models were built, and today a mere 80 remain. This

example is one of the earliest produced – number eight. It includes overdrive, twin Weber carbs, leather trim and a Nardi steering wheel. The car was restored in Switzerland, but despite being maintained in concours condition it remains in regular use – it’s done 3000 miles in the past two years.

1972 BMW 3.0 CSL

Owner: Horizon Classics

Hosted by: Gieves & Hawkes

The CSL was designed with one mission in mind – to dominate the European Touring Car Championship. To allow the racing car to compete, BMW had to build road-going versions of its lightweight take on the E9 CS. It produced 1265, of which 500 were built in right-hand drive. They used aluminium alloy for the doors, bonnet and boot lid, and thinnergauge steel elsewhere, while the side windows were made from Perspex. Much of the soundproofing and luxury trim items were also stripped out. Although the plan was successful – the CSL brought home six ETCCs from 1973-79 – the road cars have survived in only tiny numbers. This

example is an original UK-delivered, rhd example. It was fully restored over ten years, before spending time in Spain. During the work, the car was fitted with period wider Zender Group 2 wheelarches and front spoiler.

The DBX707 takes Aston Martin to the forefront of luxury performance SUVs with immense thrust – as befits the name, it produces a riotous 707PS from its 4.0litre twin-turbocharged V8. This is enough to propel the DBX707 to a maximum speed of 193mph, although the 800Nm in-gear muscle is equally weighty in the finest traditions of the marque.

However, there’s much more to the DBX707 than simply straight-line performance – every element of the car’s chassis has been honed and developed to make the model handle as adeptly as it accelerates. Aston Martin has recalibrated the dampers, fitted a wider track, and reprogrammed the stability programme for what the

1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk1

Owner: Phillip Oakley

Hosted by: Drakes

This Aston Martin is quite the mystery machine; the unique creation features a bespoke front treatment by an unnamed designer and coachbuilder.

It began life as a normal DB2/4, but by the 1970s it was a pile of bits that arrived at the restorer’s house in two trailer loads, sourced from a deceased estate. It lacked much in the way of interior trim, as well as a crankshaft.

Over the next four years, the then owner and his wife put the car back together using secondhand Aston parts, and rebuilt the interior, too. The aluminium panels had to be hammered back into shape – the car had been used as a plaything by children while

it had been laid up in a barn. Its bespoke nose, however, was a period creation before the DB2/4 came to the owner. The car had been raced and the new nose added. It’s believed to be an Italian’s work, carried out in 1964 – and there are images of the DB2/4 in the 1966 Silverstone paddock.

Owner: Jonathan Turner

Hosted by: Gieves & Hawkes

This car represents the very start of Bentley’s legend at Le Mans. Prior to this 3 Litre, the marque was mainly known for its efforts at Brooklands and in the 1922 Tourist Trophy.

Built in ’22, no. 141 was constructed as a standard-spec model, but it was soon dispatched to the Experimental Shop for race prep. The chassis was fitted with a bare aluminium shell with no windscreen or trim; just a cushion sat on the single aluminium seat.

In 1923 it was privately entered into the first Le Mans 24 Hours, with John Duff and Frank Clement driving. It was the start of Bentley’s long love affair with the endurance classic, and by the

end of the decade the 3 Litre would take three of the five Bentley victories. Life for 141 became somewhat more sedate following its racing career – for many years it served as a daily driver. More recently it’s been seen at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The Sport Quattro also featured a steeper windscreen than the standard model, to allow for better visibility in the rally machines. In addition, it had a 12.6in-shorter wheelbase, to make the rally cars more agile, and it wore Kevlar and laminate glassfibre body panels, just like the versions being flung through the forests by the likes of Stig Blomqvist and Walter Röhrl. Inside, it

was luxuriously appointed – in stark contrast to the rally weapons. Despite the comfortable interior and the fourwheel drive, the Sport Quattro was still relatively light, tipping the scales at just 1200kg. www.audi.co.uk

1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4

Owner: Private Collection

Hosted by: Gieves & Hawkes

The Ferrari 275GTB/4 is one of the defining GT cars of the mid-1960s, ushering forth a series of innovative features for its manufacturer under beautifully rendered Francesco Salamone-penned body lines.

Beneath the Scaglietti-crafted skin, the 275GTB was the first Ferrari to be built in a transaxle format – something that would become standard practice for the marque in many cars that followed. The 275GTB was also notable as the first Ferrari to feature independent rear suspension. The car was fettled by a Brit abroad; factory Formula 1 driver Mike Parkes honed it to make it handle heroically.

1957 Lancia Aurelia B20 6th Series

Presented by: RM Sotheby’s

Hosted by: Gieves & Hawkes

Italian marque Lancia has a long tradition of innovation, and the pretty Aurelia is one such example. It’s the first production car to use a V6 engine, and it combined a torsionally stiff unibody construction with a multi-link rear suspension for excellent handling.

This Aurelia is one of just 25 UKmarket right-hand-drive examples built, and it served as Lancia England’s demonstrator and press machine. It appeared in the November 8 issue of Autocar, which said of the car: “In appearance it is classically stylish without need of ornament, and the general standard of finish, of both bodywork and mechanical components,

at Concours on Savile Row continues the British link – it was first ordered from Ferrari by Colonel Ronnie Hoare, who was the founder of Maranello Concessionaires, the marque’s official importer to the United Kingdom. Its striking hue – called Azzurro La

Plata – is the one the car was originally specified in, and it’s believed to be the only 275GTB/4 ever to be painted in this colour at the factory.

is almost beyond criticism; without doubt it is one of the most desirable sporting cars of the decade.”

In 1992 the Aurelia was sold to an Italian owner, who had the car restored in its homeland. In 2008 it returned to the UK and was thoroughly refreshed

by marque specialist Omicron Engineering. More recently, it’s been comprehensively serviced by the Aurelia gurus at Thornley Kelham.

1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750

Owner: Private Collection

Hosted by: Gaziano & Girling

This 6C was first delivered to General Giuseppe Balo. Shortly afterwards he was sent to Ethiopia to act as governor, and he took the car along with him.

It was put to good use in sporting events around the Addis Ababa area, but after Balo was killed in 1943, the 6C was laid up in a cow shed for 20 years.

Emperor Haile Selassie would not allow anything of value to be taken out of Ethiopia, so the Alfa was dismantled and shipped abroad classified as agricultural spares. It remained as a collection of disassembled parts for years, until they were acquired by Neil Twyman in 1998. He then commenced a long restoration that used as many of the original components as possible.

Due to the many racing miles the car had covered on poor roads, the chassis was brittle and damaged. Accordingly, a new chassis was fabricated to the exact pattern, and the original was stored away. The aluminium body, meanwhile, was designed in a style similar to the bodies used by 1750 models in events such as the Targa Florio and Mille Miglia.

The V4SV is Norton’s answer to this question: What is the finest real-world performance bike? The famous motorcycle marque has developed the V4SV at the Isle of Man TT – one of the world’s most punishing races. However, the firm’s dedicated team of engineers and stylists have designed it for the road, so that while every bit of it has been built to race, it’s equally at home in your hands.

Norton has spent countless hours on the road, on the track and on the dyno to ensure that the V4SV is just right the moment it leaves the factory. THE EPITOME of the Quiet Luxury trend, FOPE creates 18-carat gold jewellery that whispers, not shouts. FOPE’s Italian-designed and -made jewellery is known for its innovative Flex’it system, which creates flexible bracelets that roll onto the wrist without the need for a clasp. These elegant bracelets look deceptively effortless, but they are the product of years of innovation, made with a unique combination of cutting-edge robotic technology fused with Italian goldsmithing expertise.

New for 2023, FOPE has created a series of coloured gemstone flexible gold rings called Souls. This rainbow collection of Flex’it rings, available

in white, yellow or rose gold, is set with a single precious stone. FOPE’s unique flexible gold mesh chain means these rings are comfortable and are also versatile enough to be worn on different fingers or stacked, depending on the wearer’s mood.

Whether it is to celebrate a romantic partnership, or for a best friend or parent, each precious stone within a Souls ring has a meaning that goes beyond a simple choice of colour. With pink or blue sapphires, rubies, emeralds or black or white diamonds, Souls can be worn as a symbol of love, or stacked to mark anniversaries, births or other special occasions. The rings are available in five sizes for both women and men.

Flex’it technology also extends to necklaces. The Luna collection has a hidden clasp, while the clasp on the Solo Flex’it necklaces has become a design feature; a rondel set with a central diamond, on the ‘o’ of the FOPE logo, hides a secret button that activates the opening mechanism.

The necklaces can be worn comfortably as chokers in a new shorter length, while standardlength versions maintain a perfectly round shape that sits beautifully on the skin, thanks to the Flex’it gold mesh. In addition, the Solo necklaces and matching Flex’it bracelets are available with or without diamond pavé-set rondels for extra sparkle.

Based in Vicenza since 1929, FOPE is available in more than 50 countries worldwide, and it has a London flagship boutique at 1A Old Bond Street in Mayfair. www.fope.com

FOUNDED BY Louis-Ulysse

Chopard in 1860, Chopard became renowned for innovative design and timing precision. The Scheufele family took over in the 1960s, and Chopard remains one of the last family-run watchmaking and jewellery companies in Switzerland.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (seen above, with Jacky Ickx) is the copresident, and as such is responsible for the watch division. A passionate classic car collector, he forged one of the most enduring and successful partnerships in motor sport with Chopard’s sponsorship of the Mille Miglia. The 1000-mile event began in 1927 as an open-road endurance race travelling from Brescia to Rome and back. It ran for 24

editions until 1957, and today’s event is a retrospective of the original race. This year marks 35 years of the partnership between Chopard and the Mille Miglia. Chopard’s latest editions are available to view in its flagship boutique on New Bond Street, from May 16-27, 2023. www.chopard.com
