Sport PUBlicity

Experts in live sport promo/on for pubs and bars The Euro’s present one of the biggest potenHal sales opportuniHes of the year for the on trade. The hopes and dreams of every European naHon rest on the shoulders of their home team. Whilst our own boys haven’t performed to the standard we would like for some Hme (the European championships of 1996 in fact), those tournaments where they have competed have consistently drawn in the crowds to experience the emoHonal rollercoaster that is internaHonal football in a pub environment. And it is the pub which England fans truly feel is the home of football. So it is a tournament like The Euro’s which presents such great opportuniHes to lure back those hardened football fans for whom the pub is no longer their second home. It also allows you to aWract customers for whom your venue may not usually be their first choice. So make it a good night and they may look to repeat the experience. Sport PUBlicity offer a wide range of POS, digital and strategic soluHons to help market your venue as the place to be this June. Whether you’re a sports mad venue aiming to show all 31 matches live or whether you just want to benefit from the specific games such as England's campaign, you will need to let your audience know, both inside and outside of your venue, this is where Sport PUBlicity can help. Check out our product list for details on what we offer and to make your purchases. AddiHonally, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for further advice and more informaHon. PLANNING Research

It is absolutely vital that you research everything that is happening within your town; local knowledge is the best way to get ahead of your compeHtors and will help you promote the tournament at your pub. Visit the compeHHon in your area to find out what they are doing, what set‐ up they have and how many screens. Do they have any special events happening and what are they offering customers?

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO IT BETTER?

The Build‐up

There are a number of big games prior to the tournament which will allow you to showcase your live sport prowess. These typically include the end of season finals such as the FA Cup final, Champions League final and play‐offs. AddiHonally, don’t forget the two England friendlies on each of the two weekends before the start of the Euro’s. Treat these events as a rehearsal for the main event kicking off on June 8th. England’s first match is on the 11th so the matches featuring other naHons in the days before should enable more opportunity to pracHce. You want people to experience an unforgeWable match‐day atmosphere, and once they’ve enjoyed it with you, who go anywhere else?

AWARENESS It is vital to ensure you raise awareness both externally and internally before major sports events begin. •  Make sure that your POS can be seen by all drivers and pedestrians! •  Be loud & proud for maximum impact! •  Make sure that everyone knows that you are the place to be for the big match!

FACT: During Euro 2004, 50 million England flags were sold!

We recommend focusing on selling your experience both in the venue and outside of it: You need to feel like part of the tournament – tracking the teams via a wall chart is good pracHce and legng customers know about all the fixtures that are on is a basic must‐have. Some locaHons are more mulHcultural than others but with so many of the Premier League players taking part, interest levels are going to be high even for the non‐England games. Irish focused venues have some great opportuniHes with the Republic going through – it is going to be St Patrick’s Day every Hme they play! Dressing up your venue with a variety of décor, giving the customers what they want to know i.e. when the next match is, what happens if England wins the group etc will all help to make customers feel an affiliaHon with your venue and encourage them to be loyal for the duraHon of the tournament.

STAFF COMMUNICATION In order to achieve greater value in your live sport investment, your messages must be fully supported by your members of staff. It’s important that you staff fully understand how to implement your strategy so that everyone can sing from the same hymn sheet (Ole ole ole or something like that). A major sports event like Euro 2012 requires major implementaHon at all levels. It’s important that your staff fully adhere to the venue strategy you decide on. Please view the following sugges[ons on how you can get the most out of your venue…..

16

VENUE Internal Areas The way you uHlise your internal area will be crucial for the atmosphere. Things to consider…. •  Plan seaHng and viewing prior to your event and ensure that all team know what it is. •  Make sure you leave some tables for customers to place drinks. •  PosiHon extra bins/boWle skips around for rubbish. •  Create a VIP area with the best view and most comfortable chairs. Customers will be willing to pay a premium for this especially if they can book it. •  If you have a funcHon room, are you using it to it’s maximum impact? •  Create home and away secHons – decorate different areas depending on who is playing? •  Utulise your non‐viewing areas – if you can’t get a TV in it, then use it for food service or as a boWle bar. •  Toilets – Make sure they are fully working and stocked prior to every game!

External Areas Things to consider…. •  •  •  •  •  •

How many TV’s will you need? Do you need a marquee? Can you make use of a boWle or temporary bar? How many extra staff will it take to run? Are there any local consideraHons? i.e. Neighbours, Licensing? Have you a room for portaloos?

You need to evaluate the extra sales this will create and jusHfy the cost before you go ahead with this. Smoking Areas – Make sure you have planned in the working procedure to ensure that your smoking area is well maintained and fully funcHoning. BBQs – Use these before, during and auer the matches to create atmosphere and increase sales.

DIGITAL MEDIA There are a range of digital solu[ons that are readily available to your venue, which can enable maximum impact and rocke[ng sales! If you can email your customers or have a facebook page or twiWer account, do make sure you use those and keep them up‐to‐date. Post match results, what impact that will have on the overall tournament and encourage staff and customers to take some photographs of people watching the game and post them up on there. You must be careful when you promote your venue via the digital mediums. Too much focus on yourselves can put people off whereas too much focus on a trending topic can detach from your business. Gegng involved in the football spirit is the best way to go – people value your opinions when the topic is hot! It’s all about providing people with what they want! If they want to know if they can book an area for the next match, let them know that, if they want to know who will face who in the next round If so and so beat their opponents, communicate this to them! It’s all about Hming and targeHng!

DOWNLOADS As we build‐up to the tournament, you will noHce that more people will be eager to make their preparaHons for the event and will want to arrange what they are doing. Let them know that they can watch it at your venue! A great way to do this is by providing local people with what they need to heighten their interest levels. A sweepstake kit for example is something that can give people an extra incenHve to follow the tournament and follow it with you! Check out these downloads available from our website here – They have been made so that you can customise them to your venue by adding your pub name before being printed out.
