CHRISTINE RELTON & TOM MARINE Christine Relton and Tom Marine have been making their living from painting collaboratively for 11 years. Working together on the same canvas, Christine and Tom’s paintings can be described as representational in that they start with an idea of a 4

real place or event, usually based on some where they have been or something that has happened . Christine and Tom decide what they want to paint, drawing rough ideas on the canvas together. They then start painting; one artist will paint for a while then the other will take over. There usually comes

a point where the painting begins to take on a life of its own. The idea is to leave the viewer to interpret to a certain degree what they are looking at and leave space for their ideas to give meaning to the painting.

“The process usually involves a lot of over painting and adjustment and the good thing about working together is it stops you from getting too stale or too precious about the work. We consider it finished when the balance and composition feel right and the colour works; the most successful pieces end up as more an amalgamation of imagery rather than one image of a specific place. VILLE FRANCHE

MYCHAEL BARRATT Mychael was born in Toronto, Canada but thinks of himself as a Londoner since arriving for what was meant to be a two week stay twenty years ago. He has that immigrant’s zeal for his adopted home and includes local settings that have a personal resonance in much of his work. 6

He is a narrative artist and anecdotal incidents from his day-to-day life, which he gathers like a magpie are at the heart of his paintings and prints. Mychael was recently commissioned to write a book on intaglio printmaking for the publishers A & C Black and decided to try out all of the

techniques that he wrote about. His print O for a Muse of fire, based on the work of William Shakespeare, is the culmination of those experiments. He has created a 26 plate etching which includes every technique from drypoint and engraving to mezzotint and aquatint.

ZOE HYDE

Born & raised in New York, Matthew holds a degree from the School of Visuals Arts. Following years as a noted portrait artist in America, with exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles, Matthew relocated to North east last year. This show at The Biscuit Factory marks Matthew’s debut in the UK. The Biscuit Factory will also present Matthew’s work at The Affordable Art Fair in London from 18th – 21st October.

Zoe’s work captures fragments of experiences both from past and present. A narrative runs through the paintings, which brings memories, dreams, and moments in time together. She explores the juxtaposition between the beauty and excitement of life and its inherent fragility. In some paintings layers are built up using childhood drawings, photographs, letters, doodles, words, maps, shopping lists. These images are painted over and she then scratches and even destroys the surface in an attempt to mark her existence at that moment.

ZOE HYDE | TODAY

“I allow the painting to build up a history of its own, its own autonomy and the final image is almost like a wall or landscape that has experienced the passing of time.” Zoe Hyde

PETER PODMORE Peter Podmore’s exhibition will run from the 25th October till 25th November with an preview event and talk by the artist on the 25th October 6-8pm. Peter’s exhibition of landscape paintings accompanies the publication launch of his book ‘Cold Breeze, Dark Fire – Drawings and Paintings of North Northumberland’. The book and exhibition

cover his range of painting interests, from hills and valleys to the sea. Much of his work is done in his immediate locality at West Newton where he works from a large barn studio and spends a lot of his time studying the fiery willows which flourish in the winter months. He draws initially in the open air to capture the sense of impermanence and change in

the landscape, following the fading light throughout the day and recording the progress of seasonal growth and decay. All will be explained in the book where he will reveal his working method and thought processes, and show his own historical path into landscape painting through abstraction. 9

NEIL WOOD Neil has been a practising sculptor since graduating from Wimbledon School of Art in 1988. The majority of the work Neil produces is semi-figurative. That is, the subject matter is recognisable but the composition and the way the materials are manipulated require the viewer to interpret the work. He uses the human form as 10

a vehicle to explore ideas about the human condition and relationships. Neil produces all of his work himself, through all stages, including the bronze casting. When the viewer looks at a piece of work there is a connection with the artist and the creative process, both cerebral and physical.

“My materials (steel and bronze) are cold and hard and the processes of production are demanding, but through my intervention the work takes on qualities not usually associated with the material.

JENNY HOLM Jenny Holm’s paintings are full of allusions to fairy tales and ancient myths; occasionally there is a hint of Red Riding Hood or Beauty and the Beast. Although each painting sets a scene and has its own story to tell, Jenny

PHILIP HEARSEY Philip lives and works on the edge of England, an area interwoven with the Welsh borders. Most furniture starts with the wood. He works with fallen trees or those that have been felled for reasons of safety or necessity. He does not buy harvested and ready cut timber. Different chemicals produce different colours. The colour is a result of a chemical reaction with the metal and is a change in the surface of the metal itself. Bronze is similar in colour to brass, which allows the vessel rims to be regularly

When the pattern is removed, molten bronze is poured into the impression. The casting is rough and requires a great deal of work to achieve the polished and smooth surfaces. 15

Helios V

YEMI SOBO

DAVID SCALES | MANAGED

Helios V is an exhibition of graduates’ work from the North of England - University of Sunderland, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, University of Cumbria, Newcastle College, and Cleveland College of Art and Design. This is an exciting opportunity to view photography from the region’s new and emerging artists. The series of Helios exhibitions has been an important stepping-stone for artists over the last five years, giving them a chance to exhibit their work to new audiences.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Smile

After showing at the Helios III exhibition in 2005, Magali Pettier was selected for her first international commission in Singapore through the International Photography Research Network (seen at www.theiprn.org). Since graduating from Cumbria University and exhibiting at Helios Caroline Leeming was awarded a six month contract in Dubai working for publications and magazines. Many of the photographers shown have remained in the North of England, adding to the vibrant culture of the photographic world.

YEMI was a legend across Tyneside. He was tragically murdered along with his sister and her children in November 2006. Thousands remember his smile and infectious personality. There is a good chance that if you ever had a night out in the region you will have encountered YEMI at some point. For the past 25 years he immersed himself in the pub and club scene. No party, fashion show or VIP event was complete unless YEMI was on the guest list. YEMI enjoyed local commissions with

organisations such as Accent Magazine and Metro Radio and revelled in national exposure in The Times and MixMag to name a few. His work gives a valuable insight into his life and the people he met, knew and loved... Some famous, some infamous, most just ordinary people having fun and always smiling back at him, loving him simply for who he was. This exhibition, entitled simply ‘SMILE’ is a one off. It is your chance to enjoy the intimacy of his work and to look at a quarter of a century of Geordie night life. 25

Printmaking Giclee (pronounced Gee-clay) printing is a way of copying an image digitally using archival quality inks. Images can be printed on various material, including canvas, fine-art paper and photographic paper. This process is an advance in printing in that the colours produced are more accurate to the originals than any other form of printing. There is no need for screens or other mechanical devices and therefore there is no visible dot screen pattern. The image has all the tones and colours of the original painting. This process is used for fine art purposes and giclee prints can be found in the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 26

Many artists produce limited editions of giclee prints so that they can reproduce their work to a very high standard. These are usually more affordable than original paintings. Here at The Biscuit Factory you can take advantage of our framing service to choose your own mount and frame to ensure you get exactly the right artwork for your home. You can chose from a whole host of artists who produce limited edition giclee prints, such as Alexander Millar, Dave Barden, Peter Podmore, Cathy Duncan and Sarah-Jane Szikora.

JEWELLERY

Kokkino Kokkino is a company designing and making contemporary precious metal and enamel jewellery pieces. The styles and designs are derived from the use of clean shapes and simple forms, making the designs easy to wear. The femininity of the work is also visible from the delicate style and subtlety of the colour. Prices from £25 upwards

MEDIUM OVAL NECKLACE IN TURQUOISE | £90

PINK 3 LAYER BUTTERFLY BROOCH | £45

Melanie Tomlinson Inspiration for Melanie’s range of brooches is taken from Romanian folklore, where butterflies and flowers are a reoccurring theme. Each piece she makes has a connection to a story or song that she has heard when in Romania. Melanie begins by painting intricate designs in her sketch book using gouache and a fine brush. She then individually hand prints her designs onto sheet tinned steel and then cuts, folds, presses and sews the various layers together. When finished, the metal gleams through the surface decoration adding visual depth to each piece. Prices from £22.50 upwards

JEWELLERY

Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo Based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Patricia works with pure silver, or 999 silver, rather than sterling. Pure silver is softer and therefore essential for the weaving technique she uses. Her work has been described as ‘rootsy but urban, classy but understated,’ and the pieces Patricia designs and makes must be wearable and comfortable. This is key to her work. Actor Orlando Bloom is a fan and wearer of Patricia’s work. Prices from £25 upwards

Wendy-Sarah Pacey Exhibiting for the first time at The Biscuit Factory, Wendy-Sarah Pacey’s main motivation is to bring a sense of preciousness to jewellery made with non precious materials. By using a composite of acrylic and metallic foils, she creates a vibrant new material. The simple bold shapes of her jewellery let the richly coloured patterns shine through clearly, while the smooth, curved surfaces allow light to reflect and refract, giving depth and luminescence, as though the material is lit from within.
