ART AUCTION

SPRING EXHIBITION

April’s Northern Contemporary Art Auction was a new venture for the Biscuit Factory. With work by Damien Hirst, Alexander Millar, John Boyd and Lizzie Rowe for sale, it showed that there is a fast growing secondary market for Modern Art in the North East. Check out the website www.northerncontemporary artauctions.co.uk for details of the next one.

What a great success the Spring Party proved to be. With over 900 people attending the Preview evening and many more taking advantage of the Artist’s Open Studios, we had one of our best weekends ever. Jenny Holm’s new work proved extremely popular with all but 2 selling in the first few days and the Paul Harvey and the Stuckism Show was rated as one of the top exhibitions in the country by the Times. Northern Potters proved there is a big market for their members work and we had to continually restock the displays.

THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF PAINTERS IN WATERCOLOURS 16th June 2006

Roy Kirton, who works from his studio in The Biscuit Factory, has been invited to show his work at the prestigious annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours at the Mall Gallery in London. The work will be on show in the Glass House at our Summer Exhibition Preview Night of June the 2nd.

SUMMER EXHIBITION 16th June 2006

Watching Feathers Fall by Lizzie Rowe.

Lizzie Rowe has been exhibiting her paintings with great success since the start of the Biscuit Factory in 2002. This summer we are very proud to showcase her new body of work. In the past Lizzie has received rave reviews in the national press. With her use of light and detailed observation, this exhibition is a feast for the eye. For this summer exhibition we are bringing together a diverse collection of very talented artists: local artist Monica Cid’s observations Front cover - LIZZY ROWE | Falling Feathers (detail)

are masterfully put on paper. Brian Pike uses naive, ‘safe’ imagery and irreverent humour to explore themes such as loss, regret, doubt, nostalgia, hope, innocence and identity. Christine Seiterle is a young Swiss artist who creates paintings in which everyday scenes are given a heavenly quality. Ceramicist Emma Grant explores the fragility of the materials she uses. Her beautiful white pottery will enhance every modern interior.

Moxon and Simms are old favourites of ours whose intricately patterned jewellery is unique and widely admired. Take 4 Photographers. As photography is rapidly becoming a very important medium within Modern Art, we feel it deserves a regular feature in Fresh. This time we highlight the work of: Trevor Reed, Margaret Eagle-Clark, Mike McFarlane and Malcolm Sewell.

WHAT’S ONSummer2006 3

LIZZIEROWE So here we are, just you and me Watching the stars, and sitting here quietly Its been a long week, its been a long day Its been a long time since we have been this way Listen to the beating of their wings Moving to the rhythm of the wind We’re lying on our backs watching feathers fall from angels. Colvin Quarmby, Watching Feathers Fall

Lizzie Rowe’s recent series of work encompasses the domestic, feminine minutiae for which she is best known and introduces elements of an increasingly cerebral and spiritual nature. The intricately observed drawings and paintings of women’s clothing as seen in her last critically acclaimed exhibition here in The Biscuit Factory, The Unironed Dress and Other Stories, 2004, remain central devices but in the new work the artist imbues them with a quasi-religious significance. Titles such as Numinous (in the presence of the divine) and Feathers Falling from Angels indicate her interest in iconic imagery transmuting towards objects with a spiritual presence. Light, always a crucial formal device in Lizzie’s work, here begins to suggest an internal source – daylight is amalgamated with more private, subjective illumination – the skirts and dresses are imbued with glowing auras, taking them beyond mundane objects. The sense of implied presence has progressed from Lizzie’s early self-portraits – explorations of her gender dysphoric fantasies of the 1980s, through her more mature expression of the femininity of inanimate objects, to now investigating implications of angelic manifestation.

So here we are, just you and me The paper is breathless Under the hand But the white page darkens And is blown on the wind And the voice of the pencil Who can find? Mervyn Peake, The Craft of the Lead Pencil, 1946.

www.thebiscuitfactory.com

Lizzie has always counted amongst her influences Rembrandt and Goya – in their handling of warm and cool light and atmospheric chiaroscuro – but more recently has recognised the lessons of Beardsley, Rackham and Mervyn Peake, all best known for their illustrative graphic work. The immaculately observed differences between velvet and chiffon, rough cotton and sparkling sequins reinforce Lizzie’s love affair with the tactility of fabric. The intricate patterns and grid-like formations of appliquéd ribbons lend pre-existing compositional frameworks to the power of movement and life. According to Lizzie, the series was never designed to deliberately explore spiritual themes – the drawings and paintings evolved to have a life of their own, much to her surprise. Mervyn Peake wrote of the excitement and awe engendered by a virgin sheet of paper, the sense of expectation and responsibility when beginning a new piece of work – to Lizzie, these words sum up her experience of the last couple of years.

MONICA CID | Facial Expresions(series)

MONICA CID Monica Cid began her professional career working as an architect in Lisbon. Deciding to pursue her main interest, art, she moved to the North East and completed a Master in Fine Art in 2005 at the University of Newcastle. Monica’s drawings focus primarily on people’s actions, body language and facial expressions, and on the multitude of gestures performed that reveal people’s moods and states of mind.

“Drawing people is an act that reveals aspects of both the observer and the person being observed. When drawing them I not only acknowledge numerous things about people but also about myself. I am intrigued by our human nature – what we believe we are, and can be – and find myself beginning to express these profound interests of mine through my art practice.” She has recently been awarded a grant from the Arts Council to create Good Evil, a temporary public art piece shown on the grounds of St. Thomas church in Newcastle. BRIAN PIKE www.thebiscuitfactory.com

BRIAN PIKE | Mushroom Revenge

Brian Pike graduated from Cambridge University with a PhD in Philosophy with Colour Perception as a research topic and this has clearly had an influence on him as an artist. Living and working in Richmond, North Yorkshire, he is primarily a painter, but has also undertaken printmaking, electronic artwork and photographic projects. Just as traditional fairy tales use simple, stylised narrative to explore dark, disturbing issues, Brian Pike uses ostensibly naive, ‘safe’ imagery and irreverent humour to explore themes such as loss, regret, doubt, nostalgia, hope, innocence and identity. The deep, subtle colours in his paintings are created with washes of translucent paint, built up layer upon layer. Each painting will have at least eight layers, but more often there are ten, fifteen... sometimes even twenty! His work is entirely personal. It doesn’t belong to any of the current trends or ‘-isms’. It certainly isn’t ‘traditional’ fine art, nor is it recognisably in line with the current styling of ‘contemporary’ painting but is in a class of its own.

CHRISTINE SEITERLE The Biscuit Factory introduces Christine Seiterle Christine was born in Switzerland in 1969. She studied Design, Painting and Drawing in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Since 1988 she has had various joint exhibitions and single shows in Switzerland and Southern Germany. At first sight her images picture everyday scenes: groups of people walking, cycling, dancing and moving along. Her unusual perspectives let us observe these ordinary scenes from a different angle. This and her superb use of light gives the work a dream-like quality. Her cleverly pictured characters seem to float between earth and sky. The work becomes an ode to people and life, everyday life gets a heaven like quality. We are sure that with Seiterle we see an important evolving artist who is making her way into the world of Modern Art.

EMMA GRANT | 3 Bowls | Long Line Silver | Burnt | Stacked

EMMA GRANT

Emma’s work revolves around the theme of the fragility of the materials that she uses. Through simple forms she takes porcelain to its limits, putting it through a tortuous process of stretching until it dries and cracks. The beauty of porcelain in its natural form is what makes her work special. Emma doesn’t apply glazes as they change the raw quality of that which she has spent her time achieving.

MOXON & SIMM | Jewellery

MOXON & SIMM

Many of our customers have admired the intricate jewellery by this duo. Debbie Moxon and Ian Simm started working together in 1982, designing and making high quality bespoke jewellery specialising in the use of titanium. Each piece is unique and made by hand from design to finish, so production is limited. Using various methods for masking and marking out the patterns and textures, some of their pieces need up to 5 heat treatments to build up the beautiful colours .

TAKE4PHOTOGRAPHERS

As photography is rapidly becoming a very important medium within Modern Art, we feel it deserves a regular feature in Fresh. This time we highlight the work of: Trevor Reed, Margaret Eagle-Clark, Mike McFarlane and Malcolm Sewell. Trevor Reed is an award-winning international photographer who lives locally. He has captured some magnificent and magical moments during his excursions throughout the world.

www.thebiscuitfactory.com

Margaret Eagle-Clark is a freelance photographer who works in press and public relations and lives in Northumberland. This series of photographs taken in the North East last year show the contrast between the colourful local fishing communities set against the backdrop of heavy industry. Mike McFarlane is a fine art landscape photographer, who after living in many parts of the UK has returned to the North East of England. His work illustrates his fascination of light and land, especially the coast. Malcolm Sewell has recently returned to photography after a long absence. His photographs convey the architectural beauty of the blooms and plants he photographs, expressing their vulnerability, delicacy and strength.

COMMISSIONS HOW TO GO ABOUT IT Have you ever dreamed of owning a piece of art made just for you? We have a wide range of customers who did just that and found the process easier than you may think. Guided by the Gallery’s experienced Commissions Office, the customers explain their wishes: what they would like, if they have a specific artist in mind, subject matter, size, time scale and price range. The Commission Office then liaise with the artist. Some artists like to talk in person to the customer about their wishes and specifications, at other times we will carry out all of the negotiations on your behalf. The result is always the same; an individual piece of art for you to enjoy for years to come!
