Fall 2021 Architecture Portfolio

Hi, my name is Magnus,

mhaglennie@gmail.com @magnus.glennie

I am a 4th-year B. Architectural Studies student at the University of Waterloo in Cambridge, Ontario. I’m interested in architectural design work that challenges our ideas of sustainability, affordability, and the user experience. Outside of work and school, I love to sculpt 3D models, write and record music, and cook with different foods from around the world.

My co-workers have called me insightful, creative, and hard-working. I’m thrilled by the chance to learn something new, and I’m at my best when working with a diverse team of passionate people. If you like creative solutions and beautiful details the way I do, let’s explore them together!

Previously, I have been...

Senior Treasurer - Waterloo Architecture Students Association (WASA)

Finance / Marketing Staff - “galt. Publications” Architecture Magazine

Mentor to 4 First-year students - Mentorship for Architecture Peers (MAP)

To whom it may concern,

My name is Elizabeth Fenuta, an architect with the Toronto Accessibility Upgrades division of IBI Group’s Toronto West office, and full time lecturer for Humber College’s architectural technologist course. I am writing this letter to recognize Magnus Glennie for his exceptional contributions to our projects and the work environment at IBI during his eight month co op work term. During his time in our office, he has:

Coordinated independently with the PM, technologists, engineers and subconsultants to create detail drawings for 50%, 90%, Permit and Tender submissions, hosting meetings over Teams to further demonstrate our design intent.

Communicated via email and verbally with external subconsultants and stakeholders in a professional, concise manner which reflected IBI’s values.

Upgraded families, schedules, and templates in Revit models in 3D and 2D capacities based on ReCap scans, photographs, sketches, and the incoming demands of our client across a 76 sheet Revit model

Showed adaptability to time constraints, delivering effective graphics and revisions for stakeholder meetings, sometimes under less than a half hour’s notice.

Proved his research skills and knowledge of the OBC and Toronto Accessibility Design Guidelines, researching precedents and proposing new design changes to solve urgent conflicts in wheelchair accessibility, accommodation for the elderly, safety standards and more.

Contributed to a friendly work from home team environment by working enthusiastically with other designers and seeking further help where necessary.

Showed initiative when taking on new challenges, balancing long term and short term tasks by seeking out tasks and offering help to other designers on our team.

Magnus has shown continued dedication to architecture as a profession and a personal passion for design during the time I have known him. I speak for the team here at IBI Toronto West when I say that we wish he could have stayed longer than eight months, but we wish him luck with his future career. I would recommend Magnus to any office looking for a self motivated, focused designer to deliver creative solutions and effective results to their projects

Sincerely, Elizabeth Fenuta OAA, M.ARCH, MRAIC, HONS. BAS (she/her/hers)

ADVISORS ADRIAN BLACKWELL, DERECK REVINGTON STUDIO: Our House is on Fire

The demand for social housing in Toronto’s Sherbourne Corridor has never been greater, but gentrification of this historically low-income neighborhood has limited the land inventory available for possible relief. Enter Corner Club, not just a tower, but an urban intervention which inverts the “tower in the park” model; the building runs along the property line, leaving a hollow core for daylighting and visibility. A minimized footprint opens up the neighborhood access between three streets, and the building is expanded to make use of any gaps or negative space lost in a typical tower-podium model. Joined with Diamond & Myers’ famous “Sherbourne Lanes” complex next door, this building becomes a gateway to the community and a moment of relief in a high-pressure neighborhood.

ADVISORS MARIE-PAULE MACDONALD STUDIO: Our House is on Fire

With a burgeoning punk rock scene spearheaded by garage bands from rural communities along the coast uploading music through Souncloud and YouTube, Australia is experiencing a music revival through “Aussie Pub Rock”. Though many rise to popularity with their first albums, the only professional recording studios available are in major cities such as Melbourne and Brisbane, an 8+ hour drive for many artists. The Locus provides the solution: a rural multiplex music studio in the Lockyer Valley where artists can record by day and perform by night. The building itself operates as a full-service studio complete with a large atrium, acoustically isolated small studios for 1-5 musicians, and large studios for 6-10 musicians. The site is landscaped with staff parking, drive-in parking and amphitheatre seating, and an on-site reservoir for filtering road runoff before it enters Lockyer Creek. Indoors and outdoors, the Locus is ready to get loud.

STUDIO: Aquatic Architectures

Though not typically fatal, seasonal flooding in the Kuantan region of Malaysia is devastating to local economies and lifestyles. Working under Elizabeth English, head of the Buoyant Foundation Project, we proposed an alternative to moving the house: build it to float. Using an underside chassis connected to vertical guidance posts and connected to site infrastructure via umbilical cables for water, sewage, and electric, the retrofitted structure can now comfortably endure long periods of flooding up to 1.7m high. A powerful solution with a simple mechanism, this buoyant housing retrofit hopes to inspire flood-impacted regions to adopt long-term solutions, and prove that great design solutions do not need to sacrifice affordability.

A space-efficient transitional duplex housing concept based on the surplus of abandoned brownfield parcels in Galt, paired with Cambridge’s high demand for effective transitional housing. The question we asked ourselves as designers was “How do you live a creative life?” Mazlowe’s Hierarchy teaches us that after survival and social needs are met, we desire self-actualization, and our goal was to provide the maximum freedom in a limited space. Residents can choose to share only the kitchen, or even the entire house with pullaway walls and expansive double-height studio suites where bedrooms mezzanines provide a perch to observe the inside and outside world. Salvage means rehabilitation of the land and community, a tactical insertion of compassion into an industrial landscape and a space for people to recover on their own terms by defining their own way of life.
