PORTFOLIO AND SELECTED WORKS MAGNUS H.A. GLENNIE 2017 - 2020
Hi, my name is Magnus. I am a 3rd-year B. Arch student at the University of Waterloo in Cambridge, Ontario. I am seeking a 4-month co-op in an architectural design firm to build new relationships, experiences, and technical skills. Outside of school, I love to play the violin in a range of styles, draw science fiction art, and watch classic films. I’ve been called determined, imaginative, and insightful by former employers, and I’m thrilled when a plan comes together or a system operates effectively . If you have a passion for creative solutions and beautiful details, let’s explore them together.

Think like a River
In my mind, to “think like a river meant understanding the great changes that come with persistent flow over time. Based upon responding to the forces of wildlife, pollination, wetland flooding, and human impacts on this reclaimed site in Brantford, Canada, this recreational campground was designed to display the full beauty of these natural phenomena while allowing the architecture to play a positive role in the existing environment, eventually becoming productively integrated with the landscape itself.

The Function of Affect
The final piece in a series of studies on affect in architecture, drawing on the sensual experiences of film and sculpture to evoke feelings of wonder and surprise in the visitors of this gallery. Playing off our pre-conceived ideas of mass, light, and interior versus exterior space, massive stone walls seem frail under sharp cutaways, and the open sky itself takes on an intimidating weight; Like its film-precursor namesake, Zรถetrope is a game of illusions based on both the hidden and revealed.

Presented with a small brownfield parcel in Cambridge, Ontario and a high demand for transitional housing, challenges arise and a core philosophy motivates solutions: “How can we live a creative life?” Salvage is a collaborative effort to convert limited, abandoned industrial sites into functional living spaces for people who just want to feel human again.

COMPETITION (FINALIST) CO-CREATOR:
AURORA CHI
PARALLELS was conceptualized as a structurally creative response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s eight 10-metre high wall prototypes in San Diego, California, introduced in October 2017 to be erected along the United States / Mexico border. More than just a viewing platform over this proposed barrier between countries, Parallels tackles a dialogue about the positive and negative potential impacts of architecture on the global community.
