If you’re anything like me, you’ll have noted how much lighter the evenings are getting day by day, and counting down to the clocks going forward.

Don’t get me wrong, there are things I love about winter – frosty but sunny mornings, bundling up for a long walk before coming home to hot soup, or cosying up in front of the fire to watch a good film to name a few.

I always felt that the seasons are more pronounced living in Dorset. Not only do we have so much opportunity to watch nature move through its cycles, but we also see the same with people.

Come autumn, there are fewer visitors to our county and those left tend to bed down and become homebodies during the colder weather. In spring, as the weather warms, we see our towns and villages come back to life along with the wildlife.

This year, we have much to look forward to. Events that have been cancelled over the past couple of years are back on, and we have the added bonus of an extra bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We’re keen to cover as many events as possible, so please do send us details if you’re planning something special.

There’s added incentive to head to Christchurch this issue.

Man jailed for fatal collision A Bournemouth man who admitted that his dangerous driving caused a fatal road traffic collision in Wool has been jailed.

Stephen Sheppard, 41, of Redhill Drive appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court on 7 February after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison and was also disqualified from driving for five years, with the ban due to start when he is released from prison.

The charge related to a threevehicle collision on the A352 Wareham Road in Wool on Sunday 5 July 2020.

The car he was driving collided with a caravan before hitting a Ford Fiesta travelling behind head on.

A passenger in the Fiesta, 34-yearold Warren Wright from London, was very sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Expert reports indicated that it was likely Sheppard had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The family of Warren Wright said in a statement: “Warren was a young man in his prime. His life ahead of him full of opportunity; he had everything to live for.

“He had an infectious smile and sense of humour and could light up any room. He was a calm and considerate husband and an adoring and skilful father and son.

“Warren is survived by his wife, daughter, mum, dad and brother who miss him beyond words.”

Crime drops in Dorset

Although there has been a rise in sexual and rape offences in the county, Dorset Police has seen an overall 5.4 per cent drop in recorded crime giving it the eighth lowest rate in England and Wales.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics show the force has seen a drop in overall crime for the seventh consecutive quarter covering the 12 months to the end of September 2021.

The force continues to focus on reducing violence against women and girls. There was an increase in sexual offences in Dorset by 7.5 per cent compared to the national increase of 12 per cent. Rape offences in the county increased by 8.0 per cent compared with a national increase of 12.4 per cent.

Dorset has delivered a reduction of 4.6 per cent in violence against the person offences compared to an increase nationally of 8.1 per cent.

Victim-based crime saw a reduction from 45,239 to 42,486, a decrease of 6.1 per cent.

The total number of crimes reported reduced from 51,186 to 48,415 over the 12 months to the end of September 2021.

Drop in events for BCP Local Plan

If you would like to speak to someone about BCP Council’s Local Plan, there are four local drop-in information events to choose from.

The Issues and Options Document explains the key issues for the council to address and provides an opportunity for people to tell the council how they feel it should respond.

The consultation closes on Friday 25 March.

The drop-in information events are at Bournemouth Library, Monday 28 February, 10am-3pm; Christchurch Library, Tuesday 1 March, 9.30am-2.30pm; Broadstone Library, Wednesday 2 March, 10am-12noon and Rossmore Library, Wednesday 2 March, 1pm-4pm.

New play area for Trickets Cross Ferndown Town Council has secured funding for a new play area at Dugdell Close play park in Trickets Cross. Work will begin on 21 March and is expected to be completed in May.

Food and arts festival back in June The popular Highcliffe Food and Arts Festival will be back this summer after a two-year break due to Covid restrictions.

Taking place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 June this year, the event which started in 2015 will once again be held throughout the village centre in Lymington Road and on the Recreation Ground.

There are already more than 120 traders booked in, covering not only artisan food and drink but also a huge range of specially curated crafts from The Little Craft Shack. This feature will be styled as ‘Crafts on the Green’ and will be found on the Recreation Ground.

The cookery theatre will once again be in place, and will feature celebrity chefs JeanChristophe Novelli and Dorsetbased Lesley Waters. Leading local chefs will also be taking

part throughout the weekend in a marquee on the Green.

Two music stages placed at either end of the festival will offer a wide range of performances. There will be plenty for all the family with children’s craft workshops, a treasure hunt and the return of the ‘Grow Your Own’ tent featuring ‘Highcliffe in Bloom.’

Special emphasis this year will be to support ‘Plastic free Highcliffe’ with all stall holders having been asked to bring along compostable containers and cutlery. Visitors will be encouraged to use recycling bins, which will be emptied and sorted at the end of each day.

Find out about fostering Footprints Foster Care, a small, thriving independent fostering agency is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Footprints, based in Ferndown, is giving people an opportunity to find out more about becoming foster carers.

Cycle paths to be extended to Ferndown Motorists travelling between Canford Bottom roundabout and Ferndown will have to be prepared for traffic delays.

Cycle paths, which link Wimborne with the Canford Bottom roundabout, are to be extended to the Tricketts Cross roundabout in Ferndown.

The next phase of the cycle, walking and bus infrastructure works will be along Wimborne Road between Cobham Road and Canford Bottom roundabout. Construction will start in early March and is due for completion in the autumn.

The work will include improving junctions at Stapehill Road and Uddens Drive, improving Cobham Road and upgrading bus stops along the route.

The improvements will connect to the Castleman Trailway and other existing

cycle routes on Leigh Road and Ham Lane. They will also connect with future schemes on Ringwood Road.

Phase two covers the section of Wimborne Road between Trickett’s Cross roundabout and West Moors Road. Work is due to start in late March with completion anticipated for autumn.

To minimise traffic disruption, construction will be undertaken in sections up to 400m long. Some road closures and diversions will be required; affected businesses and residents will be informed two weeks beforehand.

The final third phase of work on Wimborne Road between Cobham Road and West Moors Road is anticipated to start following completion of phase one in the autumn. Design work is still ongoing for this phase.

Dorset drugs gang jailed Four men, who lived locally, were amongst a six-strong gang who have been jailed following a police operation to tackle drug dealing in Dorset.

The defendants were sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 11 February for conspiring to supply Class A drugs.

Ardit Zani, 29, of Bournemouth, Andrew Doyle, 31, of Christchurch, Lawan Najim, 26, of Bournemouth, and Marjus Nona, 23, of Birmingham, had all previously entered guilty pleas at earlier hearings.

Agron Bendaj, 54, of Luton in Bedfordshire, was found guilty following a trial in June 2021, and Endri Kostreni, 29, of Bournemouth, was convicted following a further trial in November 2021.

Kostreni was also found guilty of being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug.

Zani was sentenced to eight years in prison, Bendaj received a seven-year jail term and Najim was jailed for six years. Kostreni received a sentence of 10 years, Doyle was jailed for five years and five months and Nona was sentenced to three years and four months.

In June 2020 detectives from Dorset Police’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation Team launched an investigation into the activities of

an organised crime group, mainly made up of Albanian nationals, who were reported to be involved in the large-scale supply of Class A drugs in the area.

Evidence obtained during the operation indicated the defendants were part of a network involved in facilitating the collection of cocaine in large quantities, usually kilogram blocks, from London and then taking them down to the Bournemouth area to deal in smaller quantities.

The operation culminated in a day of action on 29 October 2020, with officers stopping a vehicle in which a large block of cocaine, weighing just under a kilogram, was found and arresting a number of the defendants. Najim was arrested as he attempted to make off from the vehicle and Doyle was arrested nearby.

Following searches of the area, Zani and Bendaj were also detained. A series of warrants were subsequently executed at a number of addresses in Bournemouth and officers found several

thousand pounds in cash, as well as various quantities of cocaine, with the total value of the drugs seized estimated between £58,360 and £127,710.

Kostreni was arrested after being found at one of the addresses that was searched.

He was also found to be involved in the cultivation of cannabis. Nona was arrested in Birmingham on Tuesday 6 April 2021.

New green machine for Bournemouth Coastal BID The Bournemouth area is upping its green credentials.

The Bournemouth Coastal BID is using an electric vehicle to collect food waste and coffee grounds from hospitality businesses along the BID’s coastal area, which is then emptied into a machine on top of Boscombe’s Sovereign Centre, to be turned into top quality compost. This is then used in community projects to grow plants and vegetables.

Fiona McArthur, manager of Bournemouth Coastal BID, said: “The green machine has

a variety of uses, one being the collection of food waste and coffee grounds from our levy-paying businesses.

“The vehicle also has a power hose so staff can clean signage and also remove graffiti.

“Improving the environment is something our levy-payers have asked us to do and this is just one small area of our work.

“Through this scheme Coastal BID businesses are supporting their communities and helping produce vegetables for food banks.”

Planning documents moved to council system

Dorset planning documents dating from the 1970s to the present day – amounting to more than four million documents – are now stored safely on one system, in a culmination of a project to combine information from Dorset’s former district, borough and county councils.

Once the final convergence phase is completed in March, the council says its attention will turn to transformation and plans to develop a modern planning system streamlining processes and making it easier for customers to use.

Claiming adverse possession of land

By Luke Stace, Solicitor, Harold G Walker Solicitors My rear neighbour thinks the last 2.5 metres of my garden should actually be hers. I’ve had a look at the Land Registry plans and she might be right.

I’ve been here 15 years though and that’s nearly a quarter of my garden, what can I do?

You may be able to claim adverse possession of it if you can show ‘factual possession’ of the land and the ‘intention to possess’ it for the previous 10 years.

Factual possession means showing a sufficient degree of physical custody and control of the land, exclusive possession, and you have dealt with the land as an occupying owner.

Intention to possess is the intention to exercise physical custody and control on your behalf and benefit, excluding all others and a reasonable belief that the land was yours.

You must prepare a statement as to how you have been using the land to evidence your factual possession and intention to possess and, if possible,

attach historic photos. This will support your application to the Land Registry.

The Registrar will serve notice of the application on your neighbour and any other notifiable party.

If there is no response, you will be registered as proprietor of the land in place of your neighbour.

If your neighbour objects, the application will be automatically cancelled unless you can satisfy certain conditions. With your circumstances you would need to show the land to which the application relates is adjacent to your land, the boundary between the two properties has not been officially determined and the neighbour’s land was registered more than a year ago.

If the adjudicator considers that you have made out your claim, and there are no extenuating circumstances (such as your rear neighbour having a mental disability), you will be registered as the owner.

Town crier in walking challenge Ferndown’s town crier, Mike Andrews, has challenged himself to walk 1,000 miles in a calendar year, in support of Lewis-Manning Hospice.

Mike began his challenge on Boxing Day 2021, having received a fitness tracker for Christmas, and plans to complete the challenge by 2 December. By mid-February, he was well on his way, with 170 miles already on the clock.

Mike is an enthusiastic U3A member, and is raising the funds on behalf of his local U3A group, which is supporting the hospice this year.

r Pulford Publicity’s Cause of the Yea It is hard to believe that January has already flown by, but the CJC team has been hard at work.

With the team involved in various beach cleans throughout the month we have, collectively, removed almost 300kg of marine plastics throughout January – most of what we have collected can be recycled through the Ocean Recovery Project.

Rope, fishing nets and many other plastics are regularly washing ashore during the winter storms and we, along with other volunteers, are on hand to collect as much as we can. We joined forces with the Dorset Clean Up Squad at Chesil Cove for one clean up, removing loads of rope from the rocks at low tide.

The CJC team spent a day together volunteering at Lulworth Estate.

Hannah, Zoe, Gordon, Lee, Louis and Roy helped Lulworth Rangers Kirsten, Derry, Tom and Adam plant trees along a hedgerow, including beech, hazel and blackthorn. It was truly an epic day with over 3,000 trees planted along a 500m stretch. Days

like these reinforce why we are such a good team – we may all come from different backgrounds and we cover quite an age range, but put us together and we all just click and get along.

The monthly West Bay ‘5 Things Clear’ event bought in over 90kg thanks to roughly 70 volunteers turning up to help out. Prize finds included fishing net and a cash register! The cash register was handed in to the local police and returned to its rightful owner, a local shop that had been burgled recently.

The West Bay event is run on the third Sunday of every month in collaboration with Bay Paddleboarding and West Bay Discovery Centre.

Everyone is welcome.

We will also be organising various beach cleans along the coast soon, details about all beach cleans will be on our website.

A partnership between Bournemouth Coastal BID and micromobility company, Beryl, means hotel managers will be provided with codes

that staff can use to access the green transport.

The initiative is designed to help hotels recruit staff, which has been difficult since

the pandemic began and will become harder during the summer when tourism spikes.

Fiona McArthur from the Coastal BID said: “Hospitality has been horribly hit by the pandemic and staff have left the industry. There is also a widespread candidate shortage in the sector and we don’t want businesses to be operating with a skeleton staff.

“Tourism is vital to the local economy and when people visit we want to ensure

they have the best time possible so they will return.

If hotels are understaffed guests won’t have the same experience and hard won reputations are easily lost.

“Our partnership with Beryl aims to incentivise people to consider hotel work by giving them free transport.”

Tourism in Bournemouth is estimated to be worth more than half a billion pounds and it supports many thousands of jobs across the conurbation.

Urgent dental reform needed Healthwatch Dorset is calling for urgent dental reform.

The organisation has found that only three of the county’s 99 NHS registered dental practices are taking on new adult patients and only 13 are accepting children as new patients.

From September to November 2021, a team of Healthwatch Dorset volunteers contacted all 99 of Dorset’s NHS registered dental practices to investigate the situation.

Only three of the 74 dental practices that responded were taking on new NHS adult patients, although six said they were taking on new NHS patients who were pregnant.

Only four practices said they were taking on new NHS patients who were being treated for cancer. Another five said they would see people receiving cancer treatment, but only if they were referred and/or had additional needs.

Only 13 practices were taking on children as new NHS patients, and two of those only in emergencies. A further seven said they would see children, but only if their parents were registered as private patients.

Healthwatch Dorset is calling on those responsible for dental care to improve the situation.

Louise Bate, Healthwatch Dorset manager, said: “Since we carried out this research, NHS England has announced £50 million of funding to secure up to 350,000 additional NHS dental appointments by the end of March 2022. We welcome this funding and we are pleased that children, people with learning disabilities, autism, or severe mental health problems will be prioritised for treatment.

However, ongoing reform is required, and we look forward to working with NHS England to help them improve access to NHS dentistry for local people.”

March in the garden As we move into more settled spring weather with temperatures changing and the soil warming, it is time to undertake the spring garden planting. New trees, shrubs, perennials, alpines and roses can all be planted after preparing your tubs, beds and borders with compost, soil improvers and fertilisers.

Now is the ideal time to plant evergreens and more tender plants to give them a good chance to establish themselves over summer, before the winter months return.

There are so many wonderful spring and early summer flowering foliage trees, shrubs and perennials to plant.

Flowering cherries, ornamental plums and apples, beautiful Japanese Acers, forsythia, magnolias, variegated Pieris, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias can all provide spectacular splashes of

colour and contrast in beds, borders and containers.

Planting out of all vegetable patches and beds with hardy plants such as potatoes and onions can be done now.

Be patient with the more tender plants – tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, chilli peppers and sweetcorn – keep those protected until the last frosts have gone.

Woodlands can give customers any advice they require on the preparation and planting of new lawns, and the feeding and weeding required to nurture the grass.

They also now stock a variety of new and native plants to encourage birds, bees, butterflies and insects to create native habitats to sustain garden wildlife.

It is a very busy time of year, but with a little effort, you will be rewarded with a beautiful succession of flowers, fruit and vegetables.

WIMBORNE NEWS IN BRIEF Jubilee service

A special service was held in Wimborne Minster to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. In the afternoon, the minster bellringers rang a full peal of 5070 changes known as Stedman Caters in three hours and 26 minutes.

New home for WI

Wimborne Evening WI has been renamed Wimborne Minster WI and has moved its meetings to the daytime. It will now meet at St Catherine’s Church Hall, Lewens Lane on the first Monday of the month at 10.15am. Call Jill Haywood on 01202 888194 for details.

Church extension

Wimborne United Reformed Church in Chapel Lane has submitted an application to Dorset Council to create a rear extension to the ground floor of the church to create a new lounge area.

Bournemouth Orchid Society’s spring show is returning to Wimborne’s Allendale Centre on 26 February from 12 noon – 4.30pm.

There will be a new Learning Zone with free child and parent activities and varied orchids on display, some for competition with many more for sale. Get advice on looking after your orchids, or have them re-potted for £2. Entry £4 per adult, children free.

Council to withdraw from Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre Following public consultation, Dorset Council is moving ahead with its proposal to withdraw its management of Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre (QELC). If approved, the withdrawal will take place in 2024.

The council currently provides management for the centre, which is owned by Queen Elizabeth’s School (QES), at a cost of over half a million pounds per year.

A consultation in the latter part of 2021 of future management arrangements at QELC received 1,799 responses showing overwhelming support to keep the current arrangements.

As part of its withdrawal, the council has pledged to help the school find alternative funding opportunities, making the current facilities more widely available and providing support and guidance for any users who may need to make alternative arrangements for their activities if necessary.

It also proposes that one-off funding (up to £150,000) is made available as a

contribution towards the replacement of the all-weather pitch at the site.

The report detailing the proposed next steps for QELC was due to go to Dorset Council’s Place and Resources Overview Committee on Thursday 10 February for discussion. The recommendations will be considered and decided upon at Cabinet on Tuesday 1 March. If agreed, Dorset Council will withdraw from the dual use management agreement at QELC on 31 March 2024.

Anniversary for theatre group To celebrate 30 years producing site-specific community theatre in East Dorset, Wimborne Community Theatre (WCT) is developing a new production celebrating Wimborne’s River Stour and reflecting on themes relating to sense of place, personal and mythical stories and memories, and the importance of the river ecology in our lives.

It would welcome anyone who would like participate as an actor, musician, artist, or as part of the backstage team.

Audiences will be led on a short journey close to the river near Julian’s Bridge, following two young people setting out on a quest – both personal and mythical – to better understand recent losses in their lives. Along the way, they meet characters and creatures who bring humour, advice and

Pupils at Allenbourn School in Wimborne have been embracing a new interest.

A new falconry club has really taken off with a group of Year 7 pupils learning about birds of prey under the tutelage of teacher Rodger Trim each week, who brings in his own Harris hawk, Ty. During the club the children are learning how to bring up a bird from a juvenile and how to train it.

Geography teacher Rodger said: “I brought the bird in last year as a one-off but there was such a positive reaction I decided to start a club. We have to keep the group quite small but it in future we hope to be able to grow it, enabling more children to get the benefits.

“Because there is bird flu around at the moment we can’t fly the hawk outside but we will in future. The children really enjoy it because it is something completely different and hawks are magnificent creatures.”

A better jab experience A sensory room to improve the vaccination experience for young people with learning disabilities or severe and longterm mental health conditions has been set up at King’s Park vaccination centre in Boscombe.

Young people aged 1215 can use the room prior to and during vaccination, which avoids them having to utilise a communal waiting area that may be noisy or cause anxiety. It is

also available for other highly anxious or nervous patients.

The centre is the first vaccination site in the south of England to have this type of dedicated space. It features colour and brightness adjustable LED lights, a machine that plays soft calming sounds, an aromatherapy diffuser and a bubble light with floating fish that bob up and down. There are also beanbags, a crash mat and wipeable sensory toys.

The feedback has been

very positive. One parent said: “The sensory room made such a difference to my son Ethan, who is 13. The calm, friendly area allowed him to listen to what was about to happen during his vaccination, without any distractions, to get comfortable and to feel relaxed.

“It allowed him to feel in control of what was happening to him and gave him the positive experience that was needed for future immunisations and treatments.”

Support gateway A service to support young people with mental health problems is to be extended across the whole of Dorset.

Dorset HealthCare launched its Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Gateway in the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch area just over a year ago, and so far more than 2,000 young people have accessed the service.

CAMHS Gateway gives 16-18 year olds the option to self-refer online, without going through their GP. Under 16s are referred by their GP. Digital support for cancer patients Young cancer patients have been able to keep in touch with others during the pandemic despite residential stays being on hold, thanks to a donation of £20,000 from Talbot Village Trust.

Youth Cancer Trust has been able to provide online weekly group therapy sessions and activity packs, enabling young people with cancer to socialise and share their own experiences, helping to reduce a sense of isolation.

Youth Cancer Trust’s weekly group sessions are hosted with trained

therapeutic counsellors, for those who need additional support. The sessions cover weekly topics for the group to discuss, to encourage healthy conversation about cancer and the difficult experiences they may face in their day-to-day lives.

Due to the success of their online support project, Youth Cancer Trust has now changed their charity objectives moving forward to continue providing online support post-pandemic.

Previously, all services were provided in person through their residential holidays.

Campaign to stop hospital being built on last remaining urban farm in Poole

By Marilyn Barber | newseditor@dorsetview.co.uk Following their move to Bournemouth in the 19th century Miss Georgina Charlotte Talbot and Miss Mary Anne Talbot bought an estate which included six farms, 16 cottages, seven almshouses, a school and a church.

The estate was to become the Talbot Village Trust, and the gradual sale of the farms over the years has enabled £1 million a year to be given to deserving causes.

However, controversy now rages as the trust has submitted a planning application to BCP Council to change the status of the farm to a Heathland Support Area.

Under the Poole Local Plan, Talbot Village Trust can only allow development on this land once it is an HSA. If this is granted it would be a precursor to ambitions for Nuffield Health to build a hospital on the land.

Kerry Batcock, who launched a petition against the plans – which has received thousands of signatures – said: “The Nuffield Health hospital plan also contains a four-storey car park, and involves more than 1,700 staff. This would impact not only this area but increase pollution and congestion on nearby roads. There are three primary schools in this area which benefit from this space, and whose pupils travel to and from schools along the farm and heathland and along Wallisdown Road which is right

Hundreds of objections have been received by BCP’s planning office.

Poachers arrested

Poachers were caught in Dorset during a cross border operation on 27 January.

Police officers from Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire, and Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Dave Sidwick, came together to support a national operation developed to target hare coursing and cross border criminality.

Op Galileo is a national operation supported by many police forces across the UK, and by agencies including the National Farmers’ Union, to make life difficult for hare coursers.

During the operation, rural crime team officers responded to several incidents including a report of poaching in progress in the Corfe Castle area. A vehicle was stopped, and two men were arrested on suspicion of poaching. Dead game birds and weapons were reportedly found following a search of their vehicle.

Their vehicle was seized and they were subsequently interviewed and released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Inspector Chrissie Plumley of the Rural Crime Team said: “Our rural communities play a vital part in helping us gather intelligence, and we really value their support.

“Any vehicles identified through intelligence, our available resources such as ANPR and the force drone unit, or that were suspected to be used in rural crime, were proactively stopped and searched as part of the operation.

“This was a fantastic display of multi-agency working under the Op Galileo banner, targeting suspected offenders who cause the greatest harm to our rural communities and sharing information and intelligence from across the whole of the UK.”

Herons nesting at Hengistbury Head Wildlife cameras at Hengistbury Head show that two herons’ nests in the area are occupied by birds.

The cameras are managed by the Parks Foundation, an independent charity that aims to enhance the parks and green space in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, so they can be enjoyed by all.

At the time of writing, it was too early for any eggs to have been laid, but it is hoped there will soon be heron chicks in the nests. A further camera has set up to watch the visitors to the bird table at Kingfisher Barn.

Cathi Farrer, chief executive officer for The Parks Foundation, said: “This is live stream is only made possible by the kind donations from

our community. Keeping cameras working in the hostile environment of gales, driving rain and salty sea spray is expensive. This year we are raising funds to add more live streams from across the conurbation, including, we hope, a bee hive and underwater camera.”

Roxy first visited Lynwood back in June for a nurse puppy check, and it was noted that Roxy had quite a significant heart murmur.

Following further assessment with a vet, Roxy had a continuous murmur.

A heart scan took place that confirmed she had a Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

This is a connection between the venous and arterial blood supply, which allows blood to bypass the lungs while pups are not yet born (as they don’t need to send blood through the lungs to collect oxygen).

When pups are born, this ductus should close, allowing blood to be pumped through the lungs to keep up adequate oxygen supply to the body. In Roxy’s case the ductus did not close. This was putting strain on her heart and had led to it distending on the left side.

Without surgery Roxy’s outlook was poor, and it was unlikely that she would live long.

Surgery required a specialist referral, but Roxy’s difficulties weren’t over just yet. The first time she went to the referral vet specialist she was deemed too small to have the surgery, as it

involved passing a catheter up through the femoral artery towards the heart to insert a small occlusive device into the ductus to block it. Her surgery was planned for a later date when she was a little bigger.

At the end of July, surgery had finally been carried out and she was on the road to making a full recovery. Her owners report her energy levels have increased significantly post procedure. Roxy can now look forward to a normal life.

Roxy stole the hearts of our team members. The veterinary world can be extremely challenging but also very rewarding and having a happy ending like this, makes it all worthwhile.

Red wine and berries might slow Parkinson’s disease

Roll into spring with healthy salads With spring on the way, you may be thinking about ditching the winter soups and introducing some delicious, healthy salads.

This recipe includes watercress, which gives the salad a peppery kick while loading your plate with vitamins and minerals – gram for gram, it contains more vitamin C than an orange, more folate than a banana, more vitamin E than broccoli and more calcium than milk. It’s also rich in iron and because of the high levels of vitamin C and A it possesses this iron is more easily absorbed than most other plant-based irons making watercress an essential addition to any vegetarian or vegan diet.

According to recent research, people with Parkinson’s disease who eat more flavonoids may have improved life expectancy compared to those who don’t. However, the effects were more pronounced in men than in women.

Flavonoids are compounds found in foods like berries, cocoa, tea and red wine.

The research followed up more than 1,200 people who had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

It showed that those with a higher habitual intake of berries and red wine was associated with a 26% and 40% reduction in risk of mortality.

The study, published in Neurology, looked at data from 599 women and 652 men who had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Participants were asked how often they ate certain flavonoid-rich foods, such as tea, apples, berries, oranges, and red wine and this was repeatedly assessed every four years. Flavonoid intake

was calculated by multiplying the flavonoid content of those foods by how frequently they were consumed.

After controlling for factors like age, smoking, medication and other dietary factors, the researchers found that consumers who habitually ate more flavonoids/flavonoid-rich foods had a 30-40 per cent greater chance of survival than the lowest consumers.

The study involved researchers from Queen’s University Belfast, Pennsylvania State University, Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital.

There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s and it is said to be the fastest growing neurological condition in the world. More than 10 million people worldwide are living with the disease. It is caused by the brain not making enough dopamine and leads to tremors, stiffness and problems with balance.

Ingredients ½ each red and white cabbage 85g watercress 1 carrot Sunflower seeds

For the dressing: 4 tbsp olive oil 2 tbps mayonnaise 1 tbsp mustard 1 tbsp honey 1 tsp lemon juice

Method • Roughly chop your cabbage.

• Using a vegetable peeler, cut the carrot into ribbons.

• Mix the ingredients for the dressing – season to taste.

• Toss the watercress, cabbage and carrot together, assemble on a plate before drizzling with dressing and sprinkling with sunflower seeds.

East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club meets in Christchurch and is hoping to tempt back old members and attract new ones after being hit hard by the pandemic. The purpose-built club at Stony Lane South has six rinks with electronic scoreboards and a licensed bar. It operates local, county and national competitions as well as friendly leagues and in the summer months there are weekly league games for those not wishing to play outdoors. If you can sit in the audience at a panto with a smile on your face throughout then it can only be described as a triumph.

A truly village production this original script, written

by Alice Weller, had lots of innovative touches.

All the cast gave wellrounded performances, but persuading Jemma Cable to be Silly Billy was inspirational.

This was the first time I’d seen her in panto and we can only hope this isn’t the last time.

KD Johnson as the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham was a larger than life character – he certainly got plenty of boos and more than a few smiles. Mike Andrews as his sidekick Guy added to the mirth as did John Bounds who provided a convincing and

likeable Dame Flatbread.

Robin Hood (Charlotte Prosser), Maid Marian (Lisa Willis) and Fairy Twinkle (Caitlin Beaumont) were able to show their clear singing voices, with the excellent backing of musicians John Dickins and Steve Pattle.

Sally Atkins, Keith Jobes, Ann Mason, Bill Mason and Pam Mizon provided excellent back up as both villagers and Merry Men, with Peter Doolan as King Richard and dancers Emily Newland and Imogen Sims completing the cast.

The costumes – particularly that of the dame – together with the scenery, all added to the magic of a thoroughly good couple of hours of entertainment.

Proceeds this year went to the Going for Bust charity.

Car drivers and motorcyclists see different things A research project exploring motorcycle collisions and injury prevention has found that there are differences in motorcyclists’ and car drivers’ visual attention because they may be viewing completely different things despite being on the same stretch of road.

The project, led by Bournemouth University PhD researcher Shel Silva, assessed neurological and cognitive influences of motorcyclists and car drivers.

The data collected showed that car drivers and motorcyclists have different visual attention patterns according to the vehicle they were using, which related to the different types of hazards they faced.

Additionally, motorcyclists’ identification, perception, and knowledge of potential risk changes as they gain motorcycling qualifications and experience.

Shel said: “The research is suggesting that by understanding motorcyclists’

knowledge and identification of risks it is possible to better inform training and materials which appeal to motorcyclists.

It is key to understand that motorcyclists do not need training about how to ride a motorcycle but would benefit from more skills regarding how to read the road and other road users.”

In coming to these conclusions, Shel identified motoring experience, training, and annual mileage, asked questions about tendency to take risks and undertook eye-tracking by watching videos and viewing images of roads which have a high number of motorcycle collisions.

Shel suggests that an effective way for a motorcyclist to be seen when approaching a junction is to make a lateral movement such as moving towards the centre of the road near the white lines. This is because the movement of the motorcycle can draw other road users’ attention to the

motorcyclist. This could be helpful as larger objects such as buses or lorries are more threatening, so a motorcycle could otherwise be visually lost.

As a motorcycle rider since the age of four, a current owner of five motorbikes, a member of the DocBike research team and on-the-road volunteer for the charity, this research has had personal significance.

Shel said: “I know friends and people who have died or suffered life changing injuries after being in motorcycle collisions.

This research is really important to me and having the opportunity to help save motorcyclists’ lives is a personal honour.”

The data collection aspect of the research is in process and Shel is still actively recruiting participants.

Top tips for learner drivers

British car buyers have bought more new grey cars than any other colour for the fourth year in a row, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In 2021, 408,155 grey cars were sold, up 2.8 per cent year-onyear and accounting for 24.8 per cent of the market.

The second most popular colour was black, accounting for 20.5 per cent of new cars, while white came in third with a 17.2 per cent share.

With the backlog for driving lessons and tests showing no sign of improving, driving instructors have been asked to give their top tips to help learners pass first time and become the safest possible driver.

The tips, provided by some of Young Driver’s qualified driving instructors, were: • Don’t copy what your peers or parents are doing behind the wheel – they may have picked up bad habits. Listen to what your driving instructor says and follow their guidance • Be a back seat driver – pay attention as a passenger when other people are driving. Watch the road to see how you would handle certain situations • Learn to read other road users – but understand that some will not follow the rules, so you have to be able to forward plan and always ask yourself ‘what if…?’

• Learn the theory not just to pass the test but because it will make you a better driver • Using your mirrors and checking blindspots needs to become second nature

Gas networks to protect against ‘the silent killer’ People across Dorset and Wiltshire are to be protected against what has been labelled ‘the silent killer’ – carbon monoxide.

Gas networks SGN and Wales & West Utilities have partnered Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) to provide 25,000 standard carbon monoxide detectors over the next five years, which will be distributed to local homeowners free of charge through the DWFRS Safe & Well programme.

The funding for the alarms has been secured via the Vulnerability and Carbon Monoxide Allowance, which is run by the energy regulator Ofgem, to support consumers in vulnerable situations.

Andy Woods, Safe & Well team leader for Partnerships at DWFRS, said: “Under the new agreement, we will have funding for 5,000 standard carbon monoxide alarms and 500 wireless interlinked carbon monoxide alarms every year. As well as being a substantial saving for the service, it also means we can offer the additional support of the wireless interlinked devices

that link up to a hearingimpaired alarm system, which uses a strobe light and vibrating pad to alert deaf or hearing-impaired people about carbon monoxide and fires.

This is something we haven’t been able to do before.”

As well as providing and installing carbon monoxide alarms, advisors and fire crews carrying out Safe & Well checks will provide a leaflet detailing vital safety advice and contact numbers.

Carbon monoxide poisoning kills 50 people a year in England and Wales and hospitalises many more.

In the UK, there are more than 4,000 visits to Accident and & Emergency for treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning – which can often lead to lasting neurological damage.

Even low levels of exposure over an extended period can cause serious health issues, including brain injuries.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, shortness of breath and, in extreme cases, loss of consciousness.

To stay safe, people are urged to know the symptoms; get an audible carbon monoxide alarm and make sure that gas appliances are serviced annually.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards is working with the UK trade association for the Manufacturers of Domestic Electrical Appliances (AMDEA) to increase the registration of household appliances by advising consumers it will help make their homes

safer. They recommend: • Register all your appliances • Check that all your household appliances are registered so you will know if they have been recalled.

Many manufacturers will allow you to register household appliances that are up to 12 years old.

• Check whether small appliances are registered Faulty toasters and kettles can cause fires. Register with the manufacturer to get recall notices before it is too late. Landlords should make sure their products are covered in properties they own.

LETTER OF THE MONTH A queen’s wood

In 2000, I planted 220 acorns in a secret part of Dorset, which I’d collected from the Major Oak (now 1,200 years old) in Sherwood Forest. A dense wood grew, and in 18 years, I planted another 62 acorns, one for every monarch of England.

6 February 2022 is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and now I shall plant another oak for each year of the Queen’s remaining reign.

Enjoy life at the Bournemouth Caledonian Society

First of all you don’t need to be a Scot to take part in our activities. We’ve been going for a long time and have our own venue. You can find us at The Scottish Hall, Shelbourne Road, Charminster BH8 8QZ. From September to the following May we have club meetings every Thursday, sometimes mornings and sometimes evening. These feature quizzes, films, games, talks and chats.

On Monday evenings we have a dance class where teachers show participants new Scottish country dances. All are welcome. No partner is necessary and the cost is £4.50. It really is a great way to stay fit and healthy.

We hold some special nights each year associated with Scotland – St Andrew's Night in November, Hogmanay in December and Burn's Night in January. They all involve food, fun and dancing. The Scots call parties ‘Ceilidhs’ – we love them and entertainment, fun and food are all involved.

Occupants escape Ferndown house fire

Occupants of a house in Petwyn Close, Ferndown managed to escape when the terraced property caught fire on Sunday 13 February, but sadly a pet cat lost its life.

At 12.23pm fire crews from Ferndown and Redhill Park were mobilised to reports of the fire, which had spread from the ground floor to the first floor.

They requested support and at the height of the incident, 20 firefighters were on scene from Ferndown, Redhill Park, Poole and Ringwood.

Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets as well as other firefighting equipment to bring the fire under control. Unfortunately, the entire ground floor and some of the first floor was badly damaged by fire, heat and smoke.

Station manager Dan Perrett, said: “We believe the cause of this fire to have been a tumble dryer in the kitchen. Due to the lack of internal doors the smoke, fire and heat was able to travel quickly, and the property has suffered serious damage. We believe the occupier noticed the fire before it was detected by the smoke alarm, escaped from the property and called 999. This action undoubtedly saved their lives. I would urge everyone to check they have working smoke alarms at home; these should be tested weekly.”

Haywire plays no more A four-piece harmony band, who have been together for 50 years, have played their last gig. Over five decades, Haywire have played with famous names such as Billy Fury and Mungo Jerry and released their own album covers.

Now the group: Dudley Cooke, Malcolm Bryant, Alan Connell and Kevin Uphill have hung up their musical instruments and sparkly jackets for the last time. The final sell-out gig took place at Hamworthy Recreation Club in Wimborne with over 200 people bopping away to covers of songs from the 60s through to the noughties.

The band used their last performance to raise money for charity, with Wimborne Food Bank, My Time Young Carers and Carer Support Dorset each receiving a cheque for £800.

High praise for Christchurch charity The High Sheriff of Dorset, Michael Dooley, has presented two awards to the Water Lily Project, a Christian charity which for the last 10 years has provided help to anyone isolated and vulnerable through the services of its community café.

Acting chairman of trustees Sue Daly received the first award, which recognises the work the charity has done in enhancing the life of the local community. This includes providing over 100 meals for the homeless, as well as running an innovative Chatterbox initiative to bring the elderly and the very young together for companionship. The charity also provided help to those isolated or at risk from domestic abuse during lockdown.

Project manager Liz Carter received a personal award for her significant contribution to supporting the community and women suffering from domestic abuse, financial and mental health issues.

Liz said: “The work of our charity would be impossible without the whole team – a few staff and many volunteers working together to support our beneficiaries and those in the community who visit the cafe. Many worked tirelessly through Covid as we saw demand for our services increase by a staggering 80 per cent.

“The WLP team all play such a fantastic part in maintaining support for those most in need. I am so overwhelmed and delighted. These awards are a wonderful acknowledgement of all the hard work we do.”

Funeral group raises funds for air ambulance Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance has received a financial boost of nearly £7,000 thanks to Douch Family Funeral Directors.

Staff at the group fundraised through raffles, car washing and a quiz night, and some walked the length of a marathon or half marathon, raising funds through sponsorship.

Managing director Nick Douch said: “It was a real family affair. Our staff, including some of their friends, family and children, have done a remarkable job raising this amount.

“We run a number of friendship and community groups and they also got involved by making items that we sold.

“It was not hard to motivate ourselves to get involved because we all know what a wonderful service this charity provides.”

Company chairman Peter Douch also volunteers during the Coast-to-Coast Cycle Challenge that the DSAA runs each year.

With each air ambulance mission costing an estimated £3,000, the charity needs a constant flow of funds.

Emma Jones, DSAA fundraising manager, said: “The support of companies such as Douch Family Funeral Directors is invaluable to enable us to continue our life saving work and be there for patients that need us.”

A competition to find Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s Greatest Bartender has been launched as part of the 2022 Shake and Stir Vintage Music Festival held annually in Southbourne on Sea. To enter, you’ll need to submit a video of yourself making a cocktail by 20 May. Judges will select the top eight bartenders from bars, restaurants, and hotels across the BCP Council area and entries will be put to public vote on social media. The top three will go on to a live final during the festival, which takes place 25-26 June, where they will make a cocktail they have created.

The winner will take home a trophy and a £50 cash prize.

Arsonists target play area – the play area at Alexandra Park will be closed for some time following a blaze in the early hours of Sunday 23 January. The fire caused substantial damage to the play equipment and it is suspected that the blaze was started deliberately.
