DORSET DORSET BUSINESS BUSINESS FOCUS FOCUS // WELCOME WELCOME
I never thought I would be writing an introduction to our magazine in these circumstances. The rate of escalation and the impact of coronavirus has been beyond imagination. The tentacles of coronavirus have reached in to every part of our lives with frightening speed and the stress and concerns we all face are intense. It’s an incredibly worrying time for us all. The Government has reacted extremely quickly and Chancellor Rishi Sunak has responded to the crisis with a raft of significant measures for both employers and employees. It’s going to be essential that these schemes are available as quickly as possible and it is a mammoth task for the Government to get these packages of support live and in the business community as quickly as is required. The Government has made a very strong public commitment to do all it possibly can and we will see further measures launched as the situation develops. The challenges we face are huge and we are all going to need support to get through this. We’ve seen the business community really come together very quickly and it’s been truly inspiring to see so many people step up and offer help in different ways. I would like to pay tribute to and thank all of these people. Coronavirus is forcing us to adapt at an incredible rate and is testing the resilience of businesses on an unimaginable scale. We’ve seen incredibly creative solutions being put in to action very quickly and business models are quickly changing. This is a huge learning exercise and I believe will
change us for the better in the long term. I think we will see old ways of working challenged, we’ll see businesses and individuals make much greater use of technology, we will see us develop greater trust in our teams and we’ll come to appreciate each other a lot more. I think it will also make us reconsider our priorities. Help and support is available from a huge range of sources including the business community itself, business support organisations, local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships. All have responded with great speed. The official Government guidance for businesses can be found at www.gov.uk and you will see a huge amount of information on our website www.dorsetchamber. co.uk. You can also phone the Business Gateway on 01202 714800 or e-mail gateway@dcci.co.uk. This support is available free of charge to the Dorset business community. It’s essential we remain focused, follow advice and all do our best at this very difficult time. Every business is being hugely challenged and as I say, it’s an incredible stressful time for both employers and employees. Business owners I speak to want to do the very best they can to support their teams and the support from staff for the businesses that employ them has been fantastic. We have committed to doing all we can. Too try and support in terms of cashflow, we have offered our members, both existing and new, a 3 month holiday period on membership fees. This is one
small step we can take and we will continue to do our very best for our members and the business community. It’s essential we focus on getting back on track. We all need to adhere to Government advice to slow the rate of infection. And when we do all return, I believe the business community will truly celebrate and positively adopt the changes for good we have needed to embrace at this very difficult time.

Working from Home Top Tips With the government advising those who can work from home should, Laura Jacob from Trethowans decided to post some helpful tips to make the transition a little easier. Have a clearly defined ‘work space’ at home When working from home it is important to feel like you are still in a working environment. Set up your desk space; make sure there is a clear work space area so you feel like you are ‘going’ to work and having that clear separation from home life to your work area. It’s also worth scheduling breaks and trying to maintain regular working hours where possible.
Take clear breaks It can be easy to forget to take breaks when your home becomes your office. Make sure you plan your breaks, especially a lunch break. Use this time as an opportunity to step away from your work space . Try planning an activity in advance, such as reading a book, doing a bit of gardening or even some exercise such as a run or yoga.
Use technology to stay connected As some of us do not know when we will be going back into the office, we need to find other ways to stay connected with our colleagues and the outside world. Using technology like Skype, Google Hangouts, instant messaging and other videoconferencing tools can make it much easier to check in with co-workers and not to feel so isolated for when you have to work from home. There are also some useful apps out there, such as free photo to PDF apps which may help with your day to day work.
Exercise Exercise is great for the mind, it helps to release endorphins which in turn will work to keep you feeling positive during lockdown. Working from home can mean you get little exercise during the day, even the walk to the kettle will be closer for some people. Try taking a longer walk around your house whilst the kettle is boiling, and incorporating stairs if you have them. Or you could look up some easy desk exercises you can do whilst seated, such as desk yoga, which will help to get the blood flowing.

Stay Positive In the current situation we are all facing, it can be very easy to lose all positivity. Our final top tip for working from home is to give you some ideas to stay positive. For those of us who aren’t used to working from home, we may be missing interaction with people, such as those in their teams at work. Why not try setting up a WhatsApp group with your whole team to share updates with each other like you would when you were in the office. This could be things that have been keeping you and your family busy, or could even be as simple as what you’ve had for lunch that day! Sending photos is a quick and easy way to share that news. There are also many wonderful apps which can help to look after your mind whilst you are working from home, such as Headspace. These are just simple ways to try and keep a positive mental attitude whilst we are all facing such uncertain times. www.trethowans.com

How COVID-19 Could Impact Your Business Insurance The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak continues to be a topof-mind concern for businesses not only raising fears about the well-being of the general public, but it’s also disrupting business operations. COVID-19 has already led to business interruptions, supply chain issues and significant liability concerns, all of which can open businesses up to claims. Review the following guidance to understand potential insurance exposures associated with COVID-19 and how different forms of your commercial cover could respond. Business Interruptions As many operations close due to COVID-19 concerns, there’s a growing question of whether or not business interruption insurance can help organisations recover lost revenue. Typically, business interruption insurance is triggered by a physical loss or damage. Under this interpretation, contagious diseases like COVID-19 would not count as a covered loss. However, some argue that COVID-19 can contaminate physical objects and workplace, which in turn would force businesses to cease operations. In these scenarios, business interruption insurance could provide some protection. Still, keep in mind that insurers may push back, making cover unavailable. As with any loss, policy wording is critically important and could make all the difference when it comes to determining the validity of a claim. Business owners should carefully review your policy extensions and exclusions with a qualified insurance broker. Liability Concerns COVID-19 raises a number of liability concerns, particularly if guests, customers or employees allege they became sick due to your business’ negligence. With this in mind, it’s important to take the following insurance considerations into account:
•
Public liability insurance—Public liability insurance protects your business from financial loss should you be liable for property damage or personal injury caused by your services, business operations or employees. It can protect you from costs associated with bodily injuries, damage to third-party property, personal injuries, medical expenses, legal concerns and more. When it comes to COVID-19, public liability policies should provide cover and allow you to defend claims. However, in order for a claim to be valid, the claimant would have to allege the disease was contracted due to the insured’s negligence and detail how, when and where they got sick—which could be difficult.
•
Directors and officers (D&O) insurance— Shareholders and other stakeholders could take legal action against your business should you fail to respond appropriately to COVID-19 concerns. Specifically, stakeholders may contend that your senior management failed to develop adequate continuity plans or detail how COVID-19 could impact the company's financial performance. It should be noted that most D&O policies exclude cover for bodily injuries, but may offer some protection depending on the specific allegations. As such, it’s important to review the scope of your D&O policy to confirm you are covered in the event of an incident.
Typically, business interruption insurance is triggered by a physical loss or damage. Under this interpretation, contagious diseases like COVID-19 would not count as a covered loss. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
•
Employers’ liability insurance—In instances where an employee believes they contracted COVID-19 at work, a number of employers’ liability concerns come into play. Notably, when it comes to workplace illnesses, most claims are only valid if the illness is occupational in nature. With this in mind, contagious diseases are generally excluded from employers’ liability policies. However, cover may be triggered if the illness arose due to or in the course of the worker’s employment. In general, these scenarios are examined on a case-by-case basis, but could include instances when a health care worker contracts COVID-19 at the medical facility at which they work, an airline employee contracts COVID-19 from a passenger or a hospitality worker contracts COVID-19 that is later linked to a large event at which they worked.

Do you really know how your staff are feeling? We are in the early stages of a global health crisis. The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted and rearranged the workplace with breath-taking speed. Protecting lives is the first priority, but we must also protect our livelihoods. With dramatic increases in layoffs and remote working, organisations are likely to see reductions in employee engagement, morale and possibly productivity, due to an increased sense of loneliness, isolation and anxiety. For business leaders, there's never been a more critical time to keep close to EMPLOYEES and to track their sentiment. Here are two things that you can do right now, to weather the storm and come through it in great shape when the upturn happens:
1.) Engage and support your staff: • • • •
Communicate clearly and effectively to share actionable information at a speed that helps staff take critical decisions Engage and connect with employees to manage any loneliness and isolation of remote workers Offer reassurance and support to employees about how the crisis is affecting the business and implications Motivate employees by encouraging them to think about the rebirth and growth of the organisation once things settle down
2.) Monitor their wellbeing • • •
Continually gauge stress and engagement levels Whatever measures you have put in place, check with your staff that they are perceived as actually working Adapt over time, and do not assume that what you have done cannot be enhanced and improved

Businesses need to tighten up cyber security as Coronavirus leads employees working from home As coronavirus spreads around the world, businesses are urging their employees to work from home. While this proactive approach to contain the virus is welcome, many are overlooking the cybersecurity implications of a remote workforce. The majority of businesses haven’t developed or tested their work from home policies before, especially with this number of employees. Therefore, many have never considered the impact this can have on the company network, as most employees will be using an unsecured home connection to access their work. Although many view cyber security as a complication to remote working, there are a number of policies that are easy to implement to make sure that the company’s infrastructure and employees’ home networks are secure. Vulnerable people and devices can be targets for hackers, who look to take advantage of lax security measures. Here are a few rules recommended by Jake Moore, Cyber Security Specialist at ESET: “The first thing to check is that employees working remotely are using computers that connect to a virtual private network, or VPN. This should be the default on office-supplied laptops, but it is worth checking if employees have a valid subscription. If employees are using 8

home computers, they should be encouraged to install a well-established VPN network with good reviews. This is a secure way of transporting private data across unknown networks, even via a home router. Instead of worrying about the security of individual apps on a device, a VPN connection can protect against multiple attacks. A secure VPN connection can stop your passwords and IP address from being exposed. “If workers have to use public Wi-Fi, they must be reminded not to use it without a VPN. Better still, they should try to use a hotspot phone connection instead, which can be faster and more secure. Taking simple steps, such as avoiding public Wi-Fi wherever possible, can go a long way in mitigating risks – so employers should ensure that they are actively reminding employees to choose secure networks. “If employees are using personal computers, it is essential to use the latest operating system and make sure it is up-to-date. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 recently, so you must remember to switch to other operating /company/dorset-chamber/
models that have full supplier support. All PC peripherals used, such as USBs, must have an antivirus installed to contain any form of malware that could be transmitted into the network. Also, it’s always a good idea to scan any machine for malware before it is used for work purposes. “Using additional layers of security will help businesses to steer clear of most sophisticated threat vectors. Encrypting private data and implementing multi-factor authentication are useful measures to enhance home and workplace security. “Employers must ensure that workers are always aware of where vital data is stored and encourage them to reach out to IT support workers if anything seems out of the ordinary, especially when it involves financial transactions. Everyone in the company, regardless of seniority, needs to be extra vigilant when working remotely.” www.eset.co.uk

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham
I hope this finds you all safe and as well as can be, and sane after some weeks of isolation and remote working?
Vehicle owners to be granted MOT exemption in battle against coronavirus Department for Transport, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, and The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP • • •
cars, motorcycles and vans to be granted MoT exemption this will allow people to carry on with essential travel vehicles must be kept in roadworthy condition
Vehicle owners will be granted a 6-month exemption from MOT testing, enabling them to continue to travel to work where this absolutely cannot be done from home, or shop for necessities. All cars, vans and motorcycles which usually would require an MOT test will be exempted from needing a test from 30 March 2020. Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition, and garages will remain open for essential repair work. Drivers can be prosecuted if driving unsafe vehicles. Read advice on keeping a vehicle in a good condition. People should stay at home and avoid travel. The only reasons people should leave their homes is set out in the government guidance. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: We must ensure those on the frontline of helping the nation combat COVID-19 are able to do so. Allowing this temporary exemption from vehicle testing will enable vital services such as deliveries to continue, frontline workers to get to work, and people to get essential food and medicine. Safety is key, which is why garages will remain open for essential repair work. Legislation will be introduced on March 30 and will come into immediate effect for 12 months, following a short consultation with key organisations. Drivers will still need to get their vehicle tested until the new regulations come into place, if they need to use it. If you cannot get an MOT that’s due because you’re in self-isolation, the Department for Transport is working with insurers and the police to ensure people are not unfairly penalised for things out of their control. Practical driving tests and annual testing for lorries, buses and coaches have been suspended for up to 3 months. I have put off writing this month’s article for as long as possible. With sands shifting daily what I would have said two weeks ago is already virtually irrelevant and I have no idea where we will be by the time the April edition goes live. So forgive me if some of this is slightly dated in context. Thanks to the Chamber team for their patience in waiting for me to submit this! I know you have all worked incredibly hard to keep the cogs turning at the Chamber, helping members navigate this really difficult time and I have every confidence we will come out of it fighting. I have looked back at the articles I have written in recent months and they are weirdly pertinent now – about trying not to get ‘the fear’ in business, ‘doing the right thing’, and well don’t get me started on the wellbeing issue! We are in a whole new heightened territory on that subject; there has never been a more important time to support each other and offer help to someone who may need it. Even if it’s a phone call to offload and share worries – listening goes a long way to help. Try to look out for signs of your business colleagues and peers struggling and extend an ear to listen where you can. Maybe sharing your concerns both ways will alleviate some of the burden, swapping tips and ideas that may be genuinely helpful? My perspective on the Coronavirus crisis from day one has, of course, defaulted to my pet subject communication. As human beings it is not comfortable for us to be separated and insular, for most of us we need to communicate and feel connected. I saw brands retreat and go underground in light of the 2008-2012 recession and it was harder for them to come back when the tides turned because they were no longer ‘front of mind’. When confidence starts to return, those who have regularly checked in with their customers, are visible to them, and were seen to be adding value and support where they could, will hit the ground running first. As trusted organisations, with brand reputation intact, their customers will wish to get back on the horse with the devil they know, and who knows them best. The media, from our experience at Liz Lean PR, is looking more proactively than ever for positive news. Use these opportunities to keep your media informed, shout about the good stuff going on where possible, and stay connected with your audiences in whatever means it takes to stay visible. It will be worth the effort.
The second strand to my belief in communication is creativity. I’m pleased to see some brands already doing what they do in a different way to accommodate the limitations we are all living within. How can you still serve your customers safely, innovatively, and maybe with a bit of entertainment value thrown in? How can our online tools now serve us in our hour of need, and how can we use them to deliver messages that keep us front of mind? Already I am seeing businesses respond with out of the box approaches. Ask yourself, how can that which was conducted offline now possibly be undertaken online? In my own business we had already – thank goodness – invested in processes and kit that enabled us to remote work. We were ready to go as soon as the ‘work from home’ call came and thanks to cloud-based solutions and software like Microsoft Teams it has allowed us to maintain business as usual. Even the constant banter between the team stayed on track, which was great to see. Podcasts can be recorded using Zoom and for video calls with multiple people, WebEx similarly, and simple smartphone video updates have proved invaluable as a means to bring some familiarity to our audiences (the Chamber ones recorded by Ian have had great following and feedback). Everyone would have found their preferred routes by now. Businesses are having virtual team yoga sessions all over the world. Pet photos and workouts shared. Team ‘after work drinks’ over video. ‘Best sock’ competitions. By the time of publishing the novelty may be starting to wear off, but trying to have fun with the oddity of it all, by working and thinking in a different way will help to see us through. Stay in touch, with us and each other, stay mindful of how front of mind your business is. If you need help, ask for it. Ultimately I wish you all safety for you and yours. I hope I can physically see you soon. My very best wishes, Liz x 11

Break clauses in commercial leases FAQs Ben Cobb is an Associate Solicitor in Frettens' specialist Commercial Property Team. In this article, he answers some of the most frequently asked questions about break clauses in commercial leases.
Greendale Construction start major contract for Canford School
What is a break clause for a commercial property?
A clause within the lease that enables you to bring your tenancy to an end before the expiry of the contractual term. Do most tenancy agreements have a break clause? Given uncertainty in the market in recent years, particularly following the financial crisis and then Brexit, break clauses have become more common in leases. You should check your lease/tenancy agreement carefully or if you are agreeing terms for a new lease, it would be a good idea to negotiate the inclusion of a break clause. What does a break clause look like? Every break clause is different and it is important that you read and understand your break clause carefully. The main types of break clauses are called rolling breaks and fixed-date break. A rolling break usually allows the lease to end at any time on giving a certain amount of notice. A fixed-date break will only permit a break on a set date, so it is particularly important that you get the service of notices correct with these type of break clauses.
How do you activate a break clause?
Again, every break clause is different. They will usually be quite prescriptive as to what must be included in the notice, who it must be served on, how it is to be served and if there are any conditions attached to the ability to break. When can you exercise a break clause? This will depend on the type of break clause (see above) How do you end a commercial lease early? If your lease contains a break clause, this would be the easiest method. If your lease does not include a break clause, other alternatives are for you to try to transfer/assign the lease to someone else (see my article on transferring/ assigning a lease) if the lease permits it, underletting if the lease permits it or negotiating an early surrender of the lease with your landlord. How hard is it to break a commercial lease? Every break clause is different and you would need to check the terms carefully. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
What is the penalty for breaking a commercial lease?
This would be specified within the break clause, but it would be rare to see a penalty. How much does it cost to break a commercial lease? Frettens are able to offer a fixed fee service in reviewing and advising on your lease and end of terms provisions, drafting the break notice and serving it on your landlord. Please call or email me to discuss your options.
Can I back out of a lease I just signed?
You usually just can't back out of the lease, as it is a commitment for the entire term. If you are having difficulties, you should discuss this with your landlord to see if they are able to assist. If your lease has a break clause, you can exercise that or try one of the other alternative referred to above. Can a landlord exercise a break clause? You would need to check your lease to see if it includes a landlord's break clause.
Legal advice on breaking a commercial lease
Once you have served a break notice, it cannot be withdrawn so you should be sure you want to end the lease. Break notices can be quite tricky as the break clause is often very prescriptive as to what is required. What you may consider a simple mistake in the notice may render it invalid and if it is not served in the prescribed way, this can also render it invalid. If there are time limits within the break clause these are strict time limits and even being a day late would render the notice invalid potentially leaving you "on the hook" for years to come. Break clauses often contain conditions, so you should satisfy yourself that you are able to meet any specified conditions within the break clause. For more information speak to Ben Cobb at Frettens on 01202 499 255
Dorset Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has started work on a major 13 month contract for Canford School, Dorset, which will see the co-educational independent school benefit from a new library and refitting of the existing assembly hall. Greendale will be demolishing the existing CCF armoury building, relocating an existing pump station and carrying out the new build construction of a 461sqm library building. The existing assembly hall building, adjoining the site, will be refurbished with new mezzanines for increased seating capacity to accommodate school assemblies, exams and events. A new 119sqm glazed link pavilion will provide a relocated entrance foyer and access to both buildings, together with art display and performance capability. Chris Kane, Director, Greendale Construction Limited, commented: “The new library facilities will be in a key location within the historic core of the campus and will be ideally located for accessibility for staff, students and visitors, with close proximity to car parking and other school buildings. “The alterations and refurbishment of the assembly hall will provide a single space for the whole school to congregate at once and improve facilities for exams, lectures, exhibitions, assembly and chapel services. Greendale will be working alongside Design Engine Architects who are renowned for their striking building designs with the use of high quality and attractive materials. The library has been sensitively developed to sit within the historic context of the school building, whilst internally, the airy design allows provision for good light levels, all intended to improve the relationship between the student’s study space and the courtyard entrance, whether they are at the ground floor or the first floor mezzanine level.” The School, which educates 650 pupils aged between 13 and 18, will remain open throughout, with Greendale ensuring minimal disruption to the staff, students and visitors. www.greendaleconstruction.com 13

Five Top Tips for Leading Dispersed Teams Like it or not, you now find yourself as the leader of a fully remote team. It’s probably the first time you’ve had to face this situation and it’s even more challenging because of the current unrest and uncertainty. You could bury your head under the duvet and self-isolate both from COVID19 and your team members OR follow these five simple tips. Establish Clear Guidelines Don’t leave your remote employees to fend for themselves. Establish clear guidelines and expectations and share them with everyone. Consensus building at this early stage sends a great message to your team. Ask your most seasoned remote employees to host a working group and talk through the challenges. Make sure that the ideas suggested are implemented quickly. Be the Voice of Reason and Calm Given the massive amount of uncertainty, all of your employees will be on-edge. Outside of your role as a leader, you can, and should, feel whatever you need to feel. However, as a leader, you will best serve your team by being a voice of reason and calm. The more you show empathy, respect, understanding, and peace, the more those under your leadership will have the ability to calm themselves and to do their work. Your workers won’t be at 100% during this time but by being a source of stability, you maximise the productivity that your employees are able to have in this situation. Monitor Productivity, not me Give your employees a sense of control over when and how they work and it will make them feel trusted. With your trust behind them, your team will rise to the level of performance that you hope for. When the focus is on their work output, not time spent, employees are eager to prove themselves by delivering excellent work and high productivity. Place emphasis on outcomes, not hours, and break away from the misconception that the most accurate measure of productivity is time spent. Outcomes are easier to deliver if you have a clear set of priorities in place. Now will be the time to prune down the list of team and individual more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

The biggest complaint from remote teams is that members feel like they never talk with one another. This is usually because they’re only engaging via text and email. Prioritise high-quality video conferences for one-on-one and team-level interaction. This can be just as real and deep as si ng across the table from someone in real life. It’s up to you as the leader to make Xme for these daily interactions and make them work. If people see you are leading and fully engaged in the process, they will follow suit. Don’t forget off-duty team interactions. Consider a pizza video conference. Have pizza simultaneously delivered to each team member’s home and talk about issues other than work. Encourage Self Care With so much current turmoil, one thing still within our control is how we take care of ourselves. Encourage colleagues to take time to relax, exercise and to engage in whatever other activities calm and rejuvenate their mind, body, and spirit. These activities are essential for everyone to stay calibrated. You’ve got this It might be ‘business as unusual’ for the foreseeable future but build on these tips and you and your team can develop a highly effective way of working. Young Chamber Programme Suspended Until Schools Return Following the school closures at the end of March due to the Coronavirus outbreak, Dorset Chamber’s Young Chamber programme has been suspended until schools in Dorset are able to return. While it was felt some elements of the Young Chamber programme could be delivered remotely, some of the most valuable business volunteer interaction relies on face-to-face engagement such as supporting mock interviews or taking part in speed networking. Understandably, these activities are not viable at this time. Joan Senior, Young Chamber Coordinator said: “It is right that we have suspended the programme and we have written to our sponsors to let them know. We will be resuming the programme as soon as we know the schools are returning.” In 2018 the Government made careers support in schools part the Ofsted requirement.
As part of Dorset Chamber’s 700+ business strong community, the dedicated role of the Young Chamber Coordinator is valued by schools as well as organisations involved in the delivery of careers and employability skills education. Bringing the world of work into the classroom plays a central role in this careers support, as laid out in the Gatsby Benchmarks framework by which schools are assessed; Young Chamber helps by mobilising volunteers to participate in a wide range of activities for students from Year 7 to Year 13. Launched in 2016, Young Chamber delivers its own employability and careers support programme, whilst also working collaboratively to support the initiatives of other organisations

that rely on real people sharing their careers paths, job roles and experiences in schools. Young Chamber also supports a variety of larger county-wide initiatives including Dorset Council’s Big Bang STEM fairs, Careers and Enterprise Company Dorset’s biannual Careers and Apprenticeships Show, Southern University Network events and more. Joan adds: “Young Chamber is still very much a part of the Collaboration for Careers Dorset (#C4DC) group which regularly brings key organisations together to share best practice, support each other’s events, develop new programmes in response to school needs and avoid duplication so students get the best support. “We believe Dorset is the only county where the local authorities, the Careers and Enterprise Company, Dorset Chamber, Dorset Careers Hub, Dorset LEP, Young Enterprise, Young Apprenticeship Ambassador Network and Young Chamber all work collaboratively in this way. We look forward to supporting schools with their careers programmes across all year groups when they return, especially those focusing on next year’s school leavers who may have missed out on Year 10 mock interviews and preparations during this year’s summer term.” 17

Looking back at Enterprise - Change Management - To do or die?
History shows us change management can be a matter of life or death for business. Economic Ups and Downs, the Internet, Social Change, Competition, Consumer Demands, Environmental Concerns, Communication, Technology and Rising Costs have demanded and will continue to demand adaptation. It is also said that in business if you’re standing still, you’re going backwards - Franklin D Roosevelt said there are many ways of going forwards but only one way of standing still. We have seen the rise of global business organisations built on data management, algorithms and trend influence. A massive transformation in marketing and development of “Brands” around lifestyle choices using hi quality design combined with worldwide communication and media influence - fuelling greater demand for products. Extraordinary developments in computers and software, CGI (computergenerated Imagery) have transformed design capability and the graphics industry. The Industrial revolution fuelled by innovation was a game changer, made a few people very wealthy but was not sustainable or environmentally friendly. It could be said that we lost our way after the Industrial revolution because of increasing employment costs and workers’ rights and a failure to manage that change - the solution for some was mass production. With rising expectations from workers and a reduction in manufacturing we saw rising unemployment. Take farming as an example, we have seen a massive reduction in workers, being replaced by machinery. The car industry is another example with the development of the production line and robots. With rising current environmental concerns, the use of fossil fuels, de forestation and particularly the use of plastics we are seeing global change management playing more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
out before our eyes and we can see how difficult the process is when economics and politicians are involved. The rise of green industries and the deployment of increasing technology will be fundamental to change management and the future of large areas of industry - perhaps the survival of our planet. Consumer demands continue lifestyle choices are being made; politicians are making promises, so it is likely that minimum wages will continue to rise and lead to further productivity pressures which may lead to an increase in unemployment. Change management for SME’s has shown to be particularly difficult as it requires investment in time and money – something SME’s have often been slow to make. A developing role exists here for the banking sector to provide more than just finance take a long term approach to lending and business support and a continuing role exists for Chambers of Commerce and others to provide affordable business support, development training and networking. Fuelled by the need to maintain or even create margins we have seen the development of process and production management which we see taken to the highest level within franchise operations that not only control brand and marketing but the systems that operate in the businesses and such investment has led to huge success with chains that extend around the world. Historically I see little evidence that enterprise and business feature strongly within schools if at
all. Indeed it might appear that education has had a negative effect on enterprise by largely ignoring it. Schools encouraging many to go to University to receive more funding, encouraging students with greater expectation of higher incomes and often ignoring the opportunities of apprenticeships. For schools it might appear enterprise and business are not attractive, however they do seem to acknowledge the role of technology and innovation in society. Chris Slocock BSc. Manufacturing companies come together Manufacturing companies come together to discuss industry opportunities and challenges Saffery Champness Chartered Accountants, QuoStar, and NatWest Bank held their inaugural Manufacturer’s Forum dinner in Wimborne, Dorset on 4th March. The dinner was chaired by Dr John Knowles, former Managing Director and Chairman of DEK – now ASM Assembly Systems, a world leading manufacturer of capital equipment for the electronic assembly industry. The evening saw Dorset manufacturing business owners, from a variety of sectors, come together to discuss the issues and challenges facing their respective industries. Local leaders from industries ranging from precision engineering, to food & drink, to plastic moulding shared their thoughts and experiences in an open forum. Discussions covered a broad range of concerns and issues affecting their companies and the local region, including: Technological changes affecting the sector around automation and Artificial Intelligence, including when investment is needed and how to ensure that these new innovations actually help improve productivity and margins. Environmental and sustainability challenges facing businesses, and how these can and should be embraced. This included building energy efficiency in capital projects; the issue of packaging in the food and drink industry; and reducing plastic generally. The Coronavirus outbreak, with many feeling that widespread concerns are out of proportion and that the pandemic virus won’t affect operations within a business, such as sales, finance and logistics, as staff can work from 20

home. It was acknowledged, however, that it will adversely affect the shop-floor. Government grants and funding initiatives, and the importance of knowing how to take advantage of financial help that is available to business, like research & development tax credits. The benefits and experiences of appointing a non-executive director to the Board to assist in strategy and bringing some wider views and experiences to the table. Attracting and growing the next generation of manufacturing experts, which generated a passionate discussion from all guests. Most agreed that to be able to bring school leavers and graduates into the industry, the expectations and working culture of different generations have to be managed and accommodated within business models. How a business owner must build the right team around them to ensure their final exit objectives can be realised. Saffery Champness Partner, Roger Wareham commented, “What we heard from our guests confirmed that our manufacturing businesses are on the verge of significant change. With many relying historically on labour provision from within the EU, the government are clear that this will be less viable going forwards. To bridge this gap, investment in technology is going to be required. This, in itself, contains significant risk and many business leaders are facing the challenge of not only financing such investment but consideration of how the workforce they employ will need to ‘skill up’ to be able to maintain the right skill set to maintain and grow their businesses into the future. “We are very pleased that the dinner was /company/dorset-chamber/
such a huge success. It achieved exactly what we wanted in respect of an open forum for local manufacturing business owners to share their experiences, discuss challenges and explore various themes currently impacting the sector. This is the first of a series we are planning and we look forward to welcoming more business owners to future events.” Robert Rutherford, CEO of QuoStar, said: “Having spent over 20 years working directly with leaders within the manufacturing and engineer sector, it's clear to see that many are isolated from their peers. In my experience peer-led groups really benefit leaders and their businesses; from opening their eyes to innovation and new ideas through to dealing with day to day operations, supply chain and HR issues. It's very powerful to bring together hundreds of years of experience to discuss events and opportunities whilst also assisting in solving each other's challenges. QuoStar really benefits from the insights gained from these events; seeing where current issues and opportunities lie and where technologies, systems and our expertise can add real value.” Dr John Knowles, concluded, “It was an enjoyable night that couldn’t have come at a more vital time. The challenges faced by manufacturers today may feel overwhelming and a successful business of today will look very different than that of tomorrow. By creating a diverse platform to talk through these issues together, we were able to cover a significant ground on the night, including issues such as innovation, research and development, and strategic recruitment. It’s by no means plain sailing for today’s manufacturer, and it’s events like these which are essential to getting through rocky patches ahead.”

Management buyout at electronics firm – by sons of founders Long-established electronics manufacturer Electronic Technicians Ltd (ETL) has been acquired in a management buyout with a difference. For the Ferndown-based company, which was established in 1984, has been sold by founders Ken Crook and Pip Arnold – to their sons. Managing Director Stuart Crook and Sales Director James Arnold are now at the helm of the multi-million-pound turnover company which boasts national and international customers. The company styles itself as ‘a total solution contract electronic manufacturer’ and operates from its own modern 12,000 sq ft facility on Ferndown Industrial Estate. Stuart Crook said: “It is very much business as usual here as both James and I have been with the company for many years and know it inside out. “We see this very much as a positive change, a natural progression keeping the business in the family and securing its future for years ahead. “We are looking for steady growth as we expand and modernise the business moving forward, offering an even more professional approach.” Ken and Pip will be still involved with the business as advisors, their experience ready to be called upon when required. ETL, which has a dedicated staff of 50 – some who have been with the company for 30 years – works across the aerospace, automotive, defence, energy, marine and medical sectors. It manufactures the likes of flight recorders, navigational equipment, vehicle climate control systems, contamination monitoring equipment, rescue service equipment, sonar devices and DNA analysis products.
Clients include multi-national companies around the world. James Arnold said: “We are very much focused on customer satisfaction. We intend to continue to invest heavily in equipment, business tools, services and people, particularly with regard to apprenticeships." The third member of the management team is Operations Director Phil Scantlebury. ETL was founded by Ken Crook and Pip Arnold in 1984 on the Trinity Industrial Estate in Wimborne, buying its current premises on Ferndown Industrial Estate in 1996 and subsequently acquiring the neighbouring factory in 2007. South West accountancy firm PKF Francis Clark advised on the buyout with Poole office Managing Partner James Robinson, who has worked with ETL since 1995, helping to structure the takeover deal. He said: “We facilitated the changes as a smooth process over a period of time, rather than loading too much financial burden on the company and its directors through a straightforward buyout. “We have also advised on future business strategy, tax efficiency on the constant investment in new equipment, income protection and protection for directors and their families. “Ours is very much a strong businessto-business relationship rather than one of just traditional accountancy. We have vast experience in the field of family businesses and I hope this is very much helping ETL.” Law firm Frettens, of Christchurch and Ringwood, advised on the legal aspects of the buyout. www.etluk.co.uk www.francisclark.co.uk 21

A global chemicals company has enjoyed a record-breaking start to the year with rising demand from the marine sector. OEMAchem supplied 150 tonnes of marine chemicals for 17 vessels on four continents in the first month of the year – including four leading cruise lines. The growing firm’s services include the specialist manufacture, test, analysis, supply and monitoring of chemicals across multiple sectors. Managing director Mark Chiverton said: “It’s been a superb start to the year and has set us up for a fantastic 2020. “We enjoyed a record-breaking January in terms of revenue and activity, with demand from the marine sector continuing to strengthen. “This has been partly due to our ability to provide chemical solutions to help shipping meet increasingly stringent nitrous oxide (NOx) abatement regulations aimed at cutting air pollutant emissions. “More generally, it can also be credited to our capacity to provide a wide range of managed services and solutions for everything onboard from swimming pools and spas to engineering and waste treatment. “Many operators in the cruise, freight, tanker and container sectors are seeking greater value and efficiencies, which we are able to provide globally as well as domestically.” Mark added: “Whether in the marine industry or the other sectors in which we operate, we pride ourselves on our professional and innovative approach.

“We have a friendly and experienced team with a focus on customer service and swift turnaround times, and I hope our emphasis on respect and transparency is clear in all we do.” During the first month of the year OEMAchem provided services for cruise line clients in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Australia – in Southampton, Singapore, Barbados and Melbourne. The firm, with 15 staff at its head office at the Trinity Court in Brunel Road, Totton, was founded in 2005. It manufactures and supplies more than 400 chemicals for such uses as waste oil and water treatment, solvent cleaners, biocides and sanitisation. The firm uses cutting edge technology for its independent analytical and testing services in the laboratory and on site in a variety of environments. This includes contaminates and substances in oil, fuel, soil, gas, air and aggregates as well as in leisure, waste, cooling and drinking water. Regulations have been introduced to make the marine sector cut greenhouse gas emissions such as NOx and sulphur dioxide. Chemical processes which ‘clean’ engine exhaust emissions before they are released into the atmosphere are among the methods to make vessels greener and cleaner. Delivering football to all Dorset Women & beyond With the highlight of International Women’s day this month, it’s great to be able to focus on the achievements of Women within the local community and globally since last year. Football, especially Womens Football, has played a huge part in the bringing the topic of equality to the forefront of the news agenda. At the Dorset County Football Association our commitment is to develop and administer county football regardless of anyone’s age, gender, ethnicity or ability. Previous generations have seen males be able to participate in football at every point of their developing lives, whether that’s at school or in the local community. This has not been the case for females throughout the generations. Times are changing and The Football Association set out a defined vision for Women’s Football, which includes doubling participation and winning a major Tournament by 2023. One part of this ambition was almost fulfilled this summer during The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019, as it attracted unprecedented interest in England’s Lionesses journey to the Semifinal. The extensive BBC coverage of the event attracted amazing viewing figures, with over 11 million watching the England v USA Semi-Final: this produced the highest programme viewing figures on the BBC in 2019 at that time. This explosion of interest in Girl’s and Women’s football, has not just impacted the Women’s Super League. It has increased demand locally, as an organisation we are growing to be ready to meet the surging 24

increase. The Dorset FA provide competitive opportunities for Girls’ and Women’s teams of all ages. We have open age leagues, with both competitive and recreational divisions to cater for all individual abilities and lifestyles. We are also committed to developing female coaches, female referees in addition to more administrators. In my role as the Chief Executive of the Association, I am passionate about the Women’s game so that females have the opportunities equivalent to our male counterparts. I am privileged to sit on the main board of The Football Association, whilst chairing the FA Women’s Board, which has a direct impact for

the standing of Dorset football on a National level. For Women involved in football, it has been a long journey to reach these goals, but one that will be easier for future generations. The challenge arises when attempting to increase the qualified coaches and officials within our county and finding ways to empower more women to continue on following their decision to move away from playing, something that is high on our agenda for 2020. Ellis Jones celebrates LGBT+ diversity A law firm which launched one of the region’s first same-sex legal services has celebrated LGBT+ History Month.
Ellis Jones Solicitors champions the campaign – held every February – as part of its ongoing support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT+) community. The firm, which has six offices across the south coast in Bournemouth, Canford Cliffs (Poole), Christchurch, Ringwood, Swanage and Wimborne as well as London, says awareness is growing – especially with TV presenter Phillip Schofield coming out during the month. Partner Lauren Day, who was named as a leading individual in this year’s Legal 500 guide, said: “Great progress has been made but there is still a long way to go. “The understanding for Phillip Schofield was encouraging but there is still discrimination and under-representation in everyday life. “We are proud to support the LGBT+ community in History Month and all the year round including expert legal advice on our website, sponsorship of Pride events over recent years, recognition of diversity internally and our same sex legal services.” Lauren, who came out to her friends at the age of 17 and is married to photographer Rebecca, is Head of Dispute Resolution at 160-strong Ellis Jones. She is part of the specialist LGBT+ team, which also includes Deborah Leask, Partner and Joint Head of Family; and Partners Katie Taft and Kate Brooks. As part of Ellis Jones’ activities for LGBT+ History Month, Lauren gave a presentation to law students at Bournemouth University. Ellis Jones launched its same-sex legal service in 2017 to help in many aspects of the law that directly relate to the LGBT+ community. Many cases dealt with by the LGBT+ team cover family issues, such as gay marriage and divorce, finances, children, parenting and fertility, financial support for children and mediation. The service also assists members of the LGBT+ community with discrimination issues and employment law advice. Nigel Smith, Managing Partner, said: “Our specialist LGBT+ solicitors have a wealth of experience and understanding in the legal issues which affect the LGBT+ community. “We are a progressive law firm which recognises diversity internally and within our client base. I am delighted that we are playing our part in supporting the LGBT+ community.” Ellis Jones was listed as one of the country’s top 200 law firms in The Times newspaper’s ‘Best Law Firms 2020’ guide recently with individual recognition for Lauren, Deborah and Kate. ellisjones.co.uk 35

How to create a spring and summer rebrand design for your charity Traditionally, donors give less to charities during warmer months. But marketing experts have proven that this does not need to be the case! There are significant seasonal opportunities for your charity to stand out and thrive through creating spring and summer limited edition, rebranding designs. Let’s take a look at a few opportunities. A ‘spring clean’ out helps your local charity! Creating a seasonal rebrand design to support your marketing campaign around ‘spring cleaning’ is one way to increase brand awareness, donations, and charity recognition during the warmer months. By creating a design that asks consumers to declutter their homes and wardrobes then donate these items to your charity shop is one way to keep your charity in people’s minds. You may also choose to design a set of brand imagery and literature that inspires the public to sell these items online and then donate the monetary value to your charity. There are lots of opportunities to create and launch this from now so that you are ready to reach the public before customary spring cleaning begins. Easter is a great opportunity to launch a charity rebrand design. Easter sparks many seasonal design rebrand ideas for charities, including adding the right pastel colours to your logo and messaging designs, Easter egg hunt games/ideas illustrated as part of your logo, and social media content images to name a few. Other seasonal rebrand opportunities include food and music festivals, local summer markets, sports days and more. All of these ideas implemented, after conducting precise research to ensure the solution is in alignment with your values, grow engagement, strengthen identity and messaging. An experienced brand specialist streamlines these seasonal rebrand design strategies with ease while still keeping at the forefront the messaging and marketing goals. Making work better, striving for excellence Most of us will spend around 80,000 hours at work in our lifetimes. For some, work is simply a means to play at the weekends. It’s all about the pay packet at the end of the week. But for an increasing number of us, work plays a more holistic role in our lives. The 5-2 week-weekend ratio really matters to most, and if we’re going to commit that much of our life to work – we better be happy there. However, finding an employer that holds those same values is the bigger challenge. For Poole based Composite Profiles UK, their belief in a happy workforce goes beyond the boardroom. They have invested more than 10 years of consistent resource into creating a happy workforce and interdependently a happy workplace. And that’s why in March 2020, Composite Profiles were recognised by Investors in People with their highest and rarely awarded 'We Invest in People Platinum Accreditation'. “We’re thrilled! It’s taken more than 10 years of working closely with the Investors in People team and framework. We’ve taken their advice and guidance and added in a sprinkling of our own ideas and flare” celebrates MD Mark Norton.
Investors in People operate in 77 countries and Composite Profiles now joins a prestigious group of just 300 companies globally, who are collectively leading the way in valuing their teams as one of their most important business assets. Mark Norton adds, “for me, it’s not all about ticking boxes and creating policies in the boardroom though. Jonathan [Investors in People practitioner] interviewed members of the team and there were anonymous surveys to complete too, so you can only really achieve the Platinum standard if it’s genuinely embedded in the culture. I see it as a ‘thank you’ really from the team to the business for making it a happy place to work.” Jonathan Saunders from Investors in People highlighted, “their plans, values and talent assessment, and their supporting processes and documents are among the very best I have seen…….. innovative things like the ‘Appreciation Tree’ is great” Investors in People has helped improve the working lives of more than 11 million people within 15,000 organisations across 77 countries, and Composite Profiles is supporting a fortunate 26 of those 11 million from their head office in Dorset. www.compositeuk.com 37

The foot & ankle The foot and ankle are made up of a large number of bones, ligaments, muscles, tendons and connective tissue (fascia) with the main purpose of absorbing load and force (landing, change of direction, deceleration etc) and locomotion (walking). Bony Anatomy: The ankle is made up of 3 bones, the tibia and fibula from the lower leg and the talus, which is a bone in the foot. There are 26 bones in the foot which articulate together to provide both mobility and mechanical strength. These bones are called tarsals, metatarsals and phalanges.
commonly known muscles are the calf muscles which become the Achilles tendon, the tibialis posterior which runs down the inside of the calf into the foot and provides support through the arch of the foot and the peroneals which run down the outside of the leg into the foot helping support the ankle as it turns in.
Ligaments: There are numerous ligaments found throughout the entire foot and ankle complex with a few of note. In particular, the 2 found on the outside of the ankle which provide stability when the foot/ankle turn in. These are called the Anterior Talo-Fibula ligament (ATFL) and the CalcanoFibula ligament (CFL). We also have a group of ligaments on the inside of the ankle which are commonly called the deltoid ligament.
Connective tissue/fascia: Along the sole of the foot we have a band of strong, connective tissue which helps support the arch of the foot. It runs from the heel bone to the base of the toes and helps in absorbing load.
Muscles and tendons: There are over 100 muscles in the foot and ankle complex, all working together to provide movement, strength and stability. The more
Common foot and ankle injuries: Achilles tendinopathy – we used to call this tendonitis but now understand that in the majority of cases we go past an active inflammation to a more chronic overload type injury. You will usually experience pain and stiffness in the Achilles first thing in the morning and during the first 5 minutes of activity/sport until the tendon warms.

2.
3. 4.
Twisted ankle – the inversion ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries we see. The foot is forced into a position which stretches and sometimes tears the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Stress fractures – these fractures usually involve the smaller bones in the feet, but they can also occur in the tibia and fibula. Stress fractures are caused by repetitive overload through the bones. Ankle fractures – unfortunately complete fractures of the bones around the foot and ankle are quite common. Plantafasciitis – this is a condition when the band of tissue on the sole of the foot gets irritated, usually causing pain on the inside of the foot near the heel.

Dorset Gateway signposts businesses to funding support during COVID-19 crisis At the end of March the government-backed Dorset Gateway service, delivered by Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in partnership with Dorset Chamber, refocused a core part of its service to provide support to any Dorset-based organisation affected by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Dorset Gateway is now extensively signposting businesses to the hundreds of billions of pounds made available by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, during the Budget 2020 announcement – which has subsequently been extended – to support businesses during this unprecedented and extremely challenging time. Dorset LEP has already invested in additional resource into Dorset Gateway, and will continue to monitor demand, while also exploring other initiatives to provide additional business resilience across the region. Finn Morgan, Dorset Gateway Manager at Dorset LEP, said: “Utilising the expertise and resources of our established Dorset Gateway team means we’ve been able to hit the ground running in providing support to businesses as soon as it comes from government.” “Calls to Dorset Gateway about Coronavirus were being logged as early as the start of March when businesses first felt the impact, and we’ll continue to do to all we can to make sure Dorsetbased businesses are supported during this period.” Ian Girling, Dorset Chamber Chief Executive adds: “This is a very fast-moving situation. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Free International Trade Training extended – yes, you read that correctly, FREE!!! Business are being urged to sign up for free International Trade training as we prepare for 31st January 2021 We are delighted to see that the government has extended the deadline to apply for customs support training to 31st January 2021. When this extension was announced in February 2020, only around 70% of the original funding had been claimed leaving almost a third still available. That’s over £7 million ready and waiting for you to use for International Trade preparations. What grants are available? You can apply for grants to help with: •
Recruitment
•
Training
• IT Improvements Many companies in Dorset have successfully secured funding to support training for their International Trade staff. The grants were originally introduced as part of the government’s support for businesses in preparing to leave the EU. Although we are now in the transition period, we still need to prepare for the changes that will take place at the end of 2020. Details of these changes are being provided all the time but will certainly include the need for customs declarations for goods exported to countries that remain in the EU. But we don’t do our own customs declarations – could we still be eligible? Absolutely! As part of preparing for the end of the transition period, you will have to consider how customs declarations will be completed for your exports to countries that remain in the more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
EU. Dorset Chamber have a full programme of training courses that can help you plan for these changes and put the processes in place that you will need. In addition, Dorset Chamber can provide bespoke courses for your company. Do you have an example of a company that has successfully applied for a grant? Albion Stone PLC in Portland received some bespoke training earlier this year. The day was structured around their needs and they were able to bring people together from different areas of the business. Julia Sparrow from Albion Stone explains how pleased they were with the decision to book bespoke training. “We spoke with the trainer in advance of the day and were able to include topics that were relevant to us. After the training, the team here felt they had gained more from the course than they expected, and it was an enjoyable and interesting day”. One of the attendees described it as a great learning experience and valued how interactive the day was. They found it straightforward to enlist the help of the Chamber in applying for a grant and organising the training. They spoke directly to the trainer in advance to ensure the training met their needs. The training day ran very efficiently at their premises and feedback from the attendees was excellent. The whole team now understands what is needed for international trade in their company generally, as well as preparing for the end of the transition period.
We’re only a small company – we’re not sure we could put together enough people for our own training. That’s no problem – there is a full programme of public training courses provide by the Dorset Chamber which can be used to ensure the people in your company that work on International Trade understand what is needed. How do I find out more? Contact the International Trade Team at the Dorset Chamber. They have successfully helped numerous companies in Dorset secure grant funding for the training they need. Grants do not need to be paid back and provide valuable funds to invest in the training of your staff. The team at the Chamber has built up experience with the application process so will be able to quickly tell you if you are eligible and how the process works. There may be no such thing as a free lunch (as the saying goes), but many companies have already discovered that free international trade training exists and is available now. What are you waiting for?

Are diesel cars really that bad? Back in the year 2000 when we were all told planes would fall out of the skies and our PC’s would pack up and never work again, dieselengined cars accounted for just 14.1% of the new car market. By 2011, this figure had increased to 50.6%. One of the main reasons for this rise in popularity was the introduction of Benefit in Kind for company car drivers in 2002, who, at the time were encouraged to choose lower emission cars which diesels were. The change in taxation regime also led to many engineering advances which led to a reduction is CO2 emissions from an average of 181 g/km in 2000 to 120.1 g/km in 2016. The landscape changed for diesels in 2015 though when reports of air quality concerns started hitting the headlines and what became known as ‘Dieselgate’ led to manufacturers selling 38% fewer diesel cars by the end of 2018 than at their peak. NOx became the new CO2 and we started to see the introduction of Clean Air Zones, increases in Vehicle Excise Duty and supplements to Company Car Tax. A recent Government statement read ‘cleaner diesel cars and vans can play an important part in reducing CO2 emissions from road transport

during the transition to zero-emission vehicles’. With the introduction of the new emissions testing regime known as The Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test, future vehicles will be tested more rigorously to measure pollutants such as NOx, emitted by cars on the road. With more and more engineering developments we are starting to see manufacturers produce diesel engine cars which are scoring maximum points for the Green NCAP Clean Air Index, the same as electric vehicles. Whilst electric vehicles produce no pollutant emissions, we are beginning to see diesel engine cars, with proper calibration and effective after treatment, can deliver extremely low pollutant emissions. In recent test carried out by a German automobile club, one of the diesel vehicles tested did not emit any NOx emissions at all which demonstrates how quickly the engineers are developing clean diesel engines. Might Diesel cars still be a good choice for company car drivers? Maybe. The latest RDE2 compliant diesel cars are exempt from the 4% diesel Benefit in Kind (BiK) surcharge which comes into effect from April 2020, meaning they are charged at the

same rate as a petrol engine powered car with the same CO2 emissions. Some manufacturers are even producing plug-in hybrid diesels which not only are very fuel efficient, but also benefit from an incredibly low BiK rate. Neil Carlton, Director of Poole based dorsetcarleasing.uk said ‘over the past couple of years there has been great confusion when it comes to the real situation regarding petrol versus diesel cars. We have had situations whereby companies have switched from diesel cars into petrol equivalents and reported a significant drop in MPG which has pushed their and their employee’s fuel spend up by around 15-20%. We strongly recommend that any future car changes are considered very carefully, and proper advice should be sought’. Two new luxury specification Irizar i6 Integral coaches have been added and can enter the increasing number of Clean Air Zones. Yellow Coaches has grown rapidly over the last year and now has a dedicated team, uniform and identity. To coincide with the launch of this national partnership and to celebrate the role of the nurse, Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital has acknowledged its longest serving nurse, Jacalyn McLaughlin, with a 35-year long service award. The award recognises the dedication and commitment Jacalyn has brought to her role in delivering high quality compassionate nursing care. Since joining the hospital, Jacalyn has witnessed huge changes during her nursing career. She says: “Times have certainly changed since I began my career. We used to have to carry glass thermometers before temperature probes were introduced and we had metal bed pans that needed to be washed out by hand! “A patient’s stay in hospital is also so much shorter than it used to be. Those having total hip and knee replacements required hospital care for 10 to 14 days post operation, whereas now it is only three nights due to medical advances. I really enjoy my job. Suttles’ Swanworth solar system IN A bid to reduce Suttle Stone Quarries’ carbon footprint and energy costs, Swanworth Quarry’s workshop has recently undergone installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panel system supported by Low Carbon Dorset and installed by Wessex Eco Energy. Throughout the year when solar radiation is produced (not just in bright sunlight), the panels will generate electricity to provide power for the workshop, security and any fixed electrical systems within the quarry. Importantly it will also help to power the quarry’s 160kW crusher motor which was upgraded to electric from diesel back in 2014, significantly reducing bills and some reliance of fossil fuel energy sources. The system, which has a capacity of around 49kWp (Kilowatt peak of a system), has been part funded by Low Carbon Dorset as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and will save around 25 tonnes of CO2 per year. This along with an ever-increasing fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles means the company is estimated to be saving in the region of 60 tonnes of CO2 emissions combined. Suttles Stone Quarries began working on the project in the latter part of 2019 and was approved for the grant from Low Carbon Dorset in time for work to be ultimately completed in October. The process, which included numerous site visits from Low Carbon Dorset’s Renewable Energy Technical Officer, Dr Derek Moss, was concluded with a feasibility study and application for £16,693 of grant funding. Once the supplier was selected and the grant was officially awarded, Suttles were able to instruct Wessex
Eco Energy to complete the works. In October, over the course of a week, 120 Canadian Solar 405w PV panels were expertly and neatly installed onto the workshop roof. John Suttle commented on the project’s completion; ‘I was really impressed with the professionalism and speed of the installation by Wessex Eco Energy and I think Low Carbon Dorset are doing a great job in helping to fund projects like this. I think that every business that is suitable for solar or other renewable energy generation and efficiencies should be applying and hope that Low Carbon Dorset continue to be able to provide funding in future.’ In the coming years it is hoped that a decision on an extension to quarrying at Swanworth will mean that Suttles can extend to a larger solar system that could entirely power activities on site and give scope to more electric vehicle charging. Nonetheless, after a lot of research and determination a low carbon vision is slowly becoming a reality and Suttles aim to roll out such technologies throughout other parts of the business. Suttle Stone Quarries is a well-established local business based in Purbeck and Poole, Dorset. As well as operating two quarries and an aggregate sales and recycling depot, the company runs a fleet of modern tipper lorries for delivery of stone, aggregates and associated products as well as collection of inert wastes such as concrete and soils for the recycling facility for more information visit; www.suttles.co.uk 45

Chamber leads way at national conference Business leaders from the Dorset Chamber flew the county’s flag at a national conference held in London amid the coronavirus outbreak. The delegation heard from speakers including Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Trade Minister Greg Hands at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) event in Westminster. Mr Hands insisted that the Government’s policy was to ‘prepare for the worst and work for the best’ and urged businesses to play their part. Earlier in the week, Dorset Chamber became one of the first nationwide to ask people to refrain shaking hands at events to help combat the spread of the disease. The chamber – Dorset’s leading business support organisation –
was also praised for its Life Skills initiative in a keynote speech by BCC director general Dr Adam Marshall. Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said: “It was a great event with Dorset well represented. “Coronavirus was clearly at the forefront of people’s minds and it was reassuring to hear Matt Hancock address the business issues head on. “At the Dorset Chamber we have been focusing on staying one step ahead and will continue to act as a focal point to give business the latest advice.” Ian added: “Although coronavirus dominated discussions on the conference floor the wheels of commerce were still turning and it was very much business as usual.”
The Dorset Chamber Life Skills project supports young people in care and care leavers on a charitable basis. Dr Marshall singled out the initiative as a national example to show how businesses are making a difference in their communities. Businesses from Dorset attending the event included Blue Sky Financial Planning, the Bournemouth & Poole College,
Deep South Media, Digital Storm, HSBC, Liz Lean PR and Ouch Training Team. Dorset Chamber is the county’s voice of business with more than 700 members representing 37,000 employees. It is the only chamber in Dorset accredited to the British Chambers of Commerce. Visit www.dcci.co.uk for more details.

Dorset Business Angels impressed by pitch Bournemouth based business showcasing ‘google maps for sailors’ grabs investor attention at Dorset Business Angels pitch event A Bournemouth based business, whose marine navigation platform’s proud boast is that its innovative product is the ‘google maps for sailors’, has grabbed investor attention in their pitch to Dorset Business Angels (DBA), in a Dragon’s Den type pitch. The founder of the business, a former Google employee, is a seasoned sailor who described his passion for the seas, which started at the tender age of 8, learning from his grandad. This resulted in him taking part in the illustrious Clipper Round the World Yacht race. He described how his sailing experiences had taught him that literally millions of sailors struggle with navigation! He advised that a third of sailors typically use more than 4 different apps when planning a trip and spend approximately 1 to 2 hours per day on navigation during their sailing trips. “There are too many variables to check such as weather, waves, chartered hazards, ocean currents and boat performances. “Mistakes can be deadly and running aground on chartered shallows happens far too often and it’s not surprising that many sailors are intimidated when planning their trip and getting out on to the water.” The marine navigation solution was presented to the savvy Angel investors and described as ‘an app that can get the safest route in seconds, save hours of work and manage winds, tides and charts and in just one app.’ The business already has an impressive 20,000 sailors using its platform. The opportunity was identified as the fact that there are 140 million boat users each year, with an addressable market of 76 million, which includes sailing boats larger than 7.5 metres. The impressive team behind the business was introduced and a line- up of formidable and experienced ambassadors listed, including former world champion sailor, Hannah Stodel. Ambitious financial projections were shared, with the ambition of an exit strategy with a trade sale in 4 to 6 years, having become ‘the de facto solution for navigation at sea.’ The company is looking to raise £750,000, of which £450,000 has already been secured. Dorset Business Angels with sailing experience showed great interest and belief in the product and shared their positive experiences of already having used the platform. Further due diligence will be undertaken by interested investors. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Their vital early warning technology is incorporated into their monitors, that help reduce the risk of prolonged exposure, reduce costly project delays and improve asbestos safety in the workplace. • A business in the sustainability sector, specialising in creating native forests, planting small, medium and large commercial woodland all over the world. The company has been contracted to work on numerous projects for The Environment Agency, The Forestry Commission and HS2 Woodlands. • An online childrens’ outdoor clothing retailer business which was incorporated into a retail group as part of its expansion. The Company stocks a range of clothing and footwear for children aged from 6 months to 14 years. The official Brexit date has now passed and the process has begun for the UK’s full departure from the European Union over the coming months, what does this mean for business infrastructure and what do you need to know? New Business Director at IT software solutions provider, KFA Connect, Richard Austin sets out his advice for businesses and eCommerce operations: “Now that the withdrawal from the EU is underway, there’s several considerations that businesses need to be aware of, specifically around IT systems.” “Firstly, if you are a UK-based business buying or selling into Europe you will need to plan for potential changes to VAT.” KFA Connect - which provides tailored IT solutions and IT support for businesses recommends allowing more time for delivery and receipt of goods, as changes to systems at customs in 2021 will require additional time to clear and be prepared for delays, at least initially. Richard continues: “If you’re relying on procuring products from the EU, then ensure that your forecasting is as accurate as possible, allow for more time to make sure that you can continue to meet production demands. “If you have an eCommerce arm to your businesses, you may need to review your pricing, allowing for additional charges from suppliers, customs and logistics providers. The relocation of offices or accounts from the UK to EU countries will require system changes to add additional locations and integrate with other systems. “The physical location of where an eCommerce website is hosted will become more important to your business,” explains Richard. “Companies with websites currently hosted in EU member states may decide to move these back to the UK. It might also be worth considering new language translations, new delivery methods, new product pricing in foreign currency or new VAT charging functionality if new trade deals are struck with different countries.” “New systems and processes may increase the requirement for purchase orders and invoices to be processed using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).” “If you are a UK business or organisation that receives or holds personal data from contacts in the EU, you will need to take extra steps to ensure that the data continues to flow after Brexit, whilst adhering to GDPR regulations.” As UK businesses head into the transition period for the remainder of 2020, business leaders should focus on planning, to ensure all opportunities are considered and advice sought. Richard concludes: “Although the government has committed to a ‘business as usual’ phase until the end of this year, now is the time to start thinking about 2021 and beyond and planning for a no-deal. Make sure you seek advice to check that your IT systems are ready for the challenges and opportunities.” www.kfa.co.uk 47

Local companies work together for Poole care home Bourne View is Colten Care’s new flagship luxury nursing home based on the grounds of the former Dorset Fire Service headquarters in Poole. It is part of an independent family-run company Colten Care which operates 21 care homes across the South of England. As the work on the new care home started, principal designer and contractor Colten Developments employed local consultants Mabey Francis as Mechanical & Electrical designers and contract administrators. headlights and subtle branding. This is not a pure sports car but at a time when we need to be aware of the environment I think the Clio RS Line does exactly what it is meant to. Prices start at just over £20,795 with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty and BIK of 28%. For more information on the Renault range speak to Jamie Speed or Tyrone Wright at Hendy Renault 01202 974036.
Turning video into your best recruitment ally Using video to present the best version of yourself, can become a valuable part of your recruitment armoury. Video supports you in two ways: • Video CVs. You know the questions asked and present yourself in a strong way • Video Interviews. Similar to a face to face interview but speeds up the process for candidates Hannah Sills and Carly Lake share how to make video work for you. Carly says, “The video CV is everything about personality. It is important for people to be themselves. Skills and experience are key from a traditional CV, but a potential employer wants to see the person behind the resume.” When it comes to video interviews treat it exactly the same as a face to face interview, more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
just without the travel and the stress to get to a location. Hannah says, “You have one take so it’s important to be prepared as though you are about to step into a formal interview, but within a comfortable space.” “My big tip, have brief notes in bullet points. It is easy to spot someone who is reading their answers.” Fear not – video interviews are the same, if not easier, than an interview in person. You are allowed to be safe in your own home and in a familiar space, and come across in a way that a paper CV does not allow. Make the most of it, use video to your advantage www.teamjobs.co.uk 49
