Hello readers, You know how your children have heaps more energy than you? Well, that doesn’t seem to alter even when they grow older. Ben, my eldest son and co-director of mags4dorset, fairly zizzed with energy last month. He took part in the pram race, (as did all the lads in the office and his brother Louis rattled the charity bucket); held a raffle at Fete on the Fields for an Asus Memo Pad; organized a CashUnity party in West Moors with the £1,000 draw being carried out by MP Chris Chope; and held a tombola, with a free draw for an Asus Memo Pad at West Moors Fun Day. All this as well as sourcing new business for mags4dorset and running the show because Mum was worn out, having had the job of reporting on everything. The fundraising was for our charity of the year, Green Cottage Riding for the Disabled, and so far we have raised over £230. But it doesn’t stop there. Ben has now booked a stall at the Rustic Fayre at Potterne Park this Bank Holiday and will be holding another tombola. If you have any unused gifts you want to part with for a good cause – give them to Ben at our office before 25 August. To find out who won £1,000 and a bouquet of flowers in our latest CashUnity prize draw turn to page 23. Have a great summer.

Christy

– a horse in a million Born in May 1981, chestnut mare Christy arrived at Green Cottage Riding School when she was three. A cross between a shire and a racehorse, she took the best qualities from both parents to become sweet, kind and trustworthy – a perfect addition to the riding school. Jill, Christy and Laura

M

any years later Christy fractured a bone in her left foreleg. Whilst on the operating table, the vet gave Laura Biddle, the owner of the riding school, some sobering news. It was going to cost around £2,000 to save the chestnut mare, otherwise the vet would have to let Christy go whilst still under the anaesthetic. Worse still, there was hardly any time to make the decision. Aged 23, Christy was no spring chicken and her owner lived many miles away and rarely saw her. Despite this, Laura couldn’t bear to part with her. “It was a quick decision and fundraising was required to pay for the operation, but she was worth every

penny,” said Laura as she strokes Christy affectionately on the neck. Now, at the grand old age of 33, Christy’s riding school days are finally over, but the news is uplifting. As a reward for her loyal service over the last 30 years, including being used by Riding for the Disabled for children with various disabilities, Christy is now taking a well deserved retirement with a doting carer, Jill Reed. “I’m her surrogate mother,” says Jill giving Christy a big kiss on her nose, (front cover pic). It’s heartwarming to know that such a beautiful horse, who has given her life to the riding school is being shown the care and compassion in her old age that she so richly deserves.

QE students speak up Sixth formers at Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne are celebrating after reaching the final of a competition run by the Speaker of the House of Commons.

T

he Rt Hon John Bercow MP’s invitation to schools through the UK to take part in the Speaker’s School Council Awards resulted in 700 entries. QE’s project ‘Supporting QE’s wider community through charitable actions’ impressed the judges, including the Speaker, leading to the accolade of runner up in the 16-19 category. To mark their achievement, North Dorset MP Bob Walter presented the school council with a specially engraved plaque, certificate and digital badge. School councils were asked to demonstrate how they had made a difference to relationships in school and with the wider community, the environment, democracy and engagement and learning and teaching. The QE project evolved in July 2013 following the appointment of Alexandra Kristjansdottir as council chair and Joe McMullen as vice chair. The

council aimed to engage more students in activites within QE, increasing the funds raised per student, enhance relations within the local community and demonstrate that young people within QE can act and achieve positive results. The school chose the charities to be supported and funds were raised through various activities. The result was that the students and staff raised almost £9,500, around £3,000 more than the previous year. The money is going to Macmillan Caring Local at Christchurch, Motor Neurone Disease Association, Body Positive Dorset, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Lewis Manning Trust. Headteacher Martin McLeman said: “This was

the first time the students had entered and I’m very proud of them and their terrific achievement. The succes is all down to them as there was very little staff involvement.” Bob Walter MP said: “It’s fantastic to see schools engaging with the Speaker’s School Council Awards scheme. “QE’s project to reinvigorate fund-raising efforts and to re-engage pupils and local charities in the process has made a real difference to the sum raised, whilst strengthening connections within and beyond the school community. I very much hope that their experience this year will encourage them, and others, to participate in 2015”.

Afternoon tea at FUS

Tea time treat Pupils at Ferndown Upper School rolled out the red carpet for more than 60 senior citizens from local clubs and organisations. Afternoon tea was followed by ‘in house’ entertainment including bingo. FUS head teacher Alex Wills said: “It’s our opportunity to show that the school is not just a learning establishment, it’s also very much a part of the local community.”

Wimborne blooms for judges Hidden treasures

O

vernight rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of volunteers who were determined to make Wimborne look its best for the In Bloom competition judging on Tuesday 8 July. South and South East In Bloom Competition Judges Matt Wakefield and Derrek Donnison-Morgan were welcomed to the town by the chairman of Wimborne in Bloom, Richard Nunn along with committee members and the Town Mayor. After Richard explained how everyone had worked hard over the last year to maintain the high standard which has led to an impressive list of awards over the years, the judges visited the Physic Garden which is now maintained by Wimborne Militia. Denise Colling, from the Militia was able to explain how much the garden is valued by residents and couples marrying at the town hall.

Matt, who was one of Wimborne’s judges last year, said: “Wimborne is well established in the In Bloom competition having entered for around 20 years. As judges we want to see how the town has responded to elements of previous judging reports.” Derrek, making his first official visit to the town, added: “We want to see what progress has been made over the last year. Sustainability is of interest as is seeing how Wimborne in Bloom manages things in the long term in areas such as funding and resources including volunteers’ time.” New displays in Wimborne this year include four new planters in East Street and two in Rowlands Hill.

This year’s Wimborne in Bloom competitions for art and poetry took the theme of the town’s Hidden Treasures. Entries of a high standard were received for the children’s section from Wimborne, St John’s and Pamphill First and Allenbourn Middle Schools. In the adults’ section, the poetry class was won by Saskia Stephenson and the art by Linda Courtney. Prizes will be presented at Allenbourn Middle School on 20 September.

Judges Matt Wakefield (left) and Derrek Donnison-Morgan are shown around the Physic Garden by Denise Colling.

Volunteers Ann Sheldrake (left) and Olive Glancy were out early doing some last minute tidying up.

Force recruits rookie puppy By Liz Turner

When I met 10 week old cute and cuddly puppy Gus, it was hard to believe that before long he will be able to to stop crooks in their tracks. Don’t be fooled by his floppy ears, the 10 week old German shepherd pup may be bouncy and full of fun now, but in a year’s time he will be ready to catch crooks as part of Dorset Police’s Dog Section.

T

he rookie recruit is being cared for by instructor Police Constable David Henrys having come to the force from a specialist breeder in Rutland. Gus will become one of Dorset Police’s general purpose dogs that are called to attend a range of incidents around the county, from helping to search for offenders and missing people to dealing with public order incidents. PC David Henrys said: “It is always an exciting time when a new dog arrives in the force, especially a puppy. “At the moment training with Gus is all about bonding and play. Over the coming months I will be building and observing his play drive, which is the main thing we initially look for in a potential police dog.

Acer in action

8

4Dorset August 2014

“I will take him to bus and train stations to get him used to the sights and sounds of busy areas. He’ll be taken on as many surfaces as possible, into dark places and walked up stairs and metal fire escapes to expose him to all the things he will have to deal with as a police dog.” He added: “He’s got plenty of spirit and is fearless. He’s a big dog and this is how he got the name Gus, after the cartoon character Gus Gorilla.” Gus’ main tracking training will begin when he is 12-weeks-old. After 12 months, Gus will meet his new handler and the pair will be sent on a threemonth course. General purpose police dogs are trained in obedience, teamwork, tracking, how to search for people and objects and hold suspects on the run. Gus’ arrival marks an exciting time for the force after it received news that the latest dog trainees Ajax and Acer have been fully licensed and are ready to work in the county. Ajax is an 11-month-old springer spaniel who lives and works with Police Constable Dave Campbell. He was donated to the force by a family in Hampshire. He is trained in searching for drugs, cash and firearms. Sniffer dogs receive specialist training to develop their sense of smell – already said to be 200 times more sensitive than the human version. Ajax will work across Dorset to help officers search during warrants, for stop checks of vehicles and searches of open ground and houses. PC Campbell said: “Ajax is a natural and excelled during his six-week training course in Guildford in Surrey.

“He has endless energy and a really nice temperament. He is going to have a great career with us. Ajax is replacing police dog Guinness who is a cocker spaniel and worked with me for eight years. He was extremely successful but has now retired and lives with me.” Ajax had his first success within a week of getting to work, finding cannabis in Poole. German shepherd dog Acer is 15-months-old and joined the Force when he was a seven-weekold puppy. He came from the Metropolitan Police’s breeding programme and will be working as a general purpose dog. Handler PC Andy Wallbridge said: “Acer is a very balanced dog with a fantastic ability to adapt his communication style to his audience – whether that be a passer-by in the street or a crook! He is a handful and certainly keeps me on my toes. He has replaced Jai who has retired after an eight-year service and he is putting Acer through his paces at home. “Acer is looking forward to catching his first burglar.” He explained: “We tend to use male German shepherds as they are bigger, stronger and more dominant than the females.” The Dorset Police’s Dog Section is based at Ferndown and Weymouth and there is one inspector, one sergeant and 12 constables responsible for 20 dogs. The force currently has 12 German shepherd dogs mainly trained for general policing duties and eight dogs trained in sniffing out drugs, cash or explosives. Dorset Police’s Dog Section was formed in 1953 when the county was among the first in Britain to set up a specialist section. Inspector Neil Leat, of the Dog Section, said: “Police dogs are vital members of the Dorset Police family delivering policing across the county. They respond to a host of different incidents and it is our job to ensure they are trained to deal with any situation. Our dogs thrive on the work they do and we know the people of Dorset love to see them.”

Charity Success The hearing charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has sent a huge thank you to the staff and customers of Digitone Hearing following their generosity at the Ferndown Festival. Digitone Hearing’s ‘Healthy Hearing’ Festival Week proved very popular with local people who benefited from free advice given by the Digitone Hearing professionals. The money donated was enough to sponsor the training of ‘Iker’, a black Labrador puppy, who will become Digitone Hearing’s latest Hearing Dog. Mrs Louise Cooper, Digitone Hearing’s Centre Manager at Ferndown, was delighted with everyone’s generosity. “It’s a privilege to be able to contribute to such a worthwhile charity and I want to say a big thank you to Lesley and Rufus, her fabulous hearing dog, for once again sparing the time to help.” Mr and Mrs Comrie won the Fortnum & Mason Hamper in the prize draw.

Hello readers, We are coming to the end of school term already, and at last we have had some good weather. A new event in our calendar is the Terry Jenner Challenge. Terry was one of our volunteers, who sadly died last year, and now our riders compete for a trophy in his memory. This involves gymkhana games and a ‘Handy Pony’ competition. Points are awarded and the rider with most points receives the trophy. It is surprising how competitive the children can become, urging the ponies to go a little faster while trying not to drop the egg in the egg and spoon race! Three of our riders, Emily, Jay and Kevin recently attended the Dorset RDA Weekend at Hanford School near Blandford, where they enjoyed riding and learning how to care for ponies. It was also a chance to make new friends, who all share a love of ponies. They returned home feeling very tired and happy, clutching certificates and rosettes. Three of our volunteers had the honour of being presented to the Princess Royal, who is President of the Riding for the Disabled Association. This happened at the semi-finals of the Queen’s Cup, a prestigious polo match held at The Guards’s Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, to which members of RDA were invited. It was lovely to meet the Princess who is so interested in the role of RDA throughout the country. The polo matches were really exciting - fast and furious play, with such outstanding ponies. Certainly a day to remember. We are so grateful to the team at Mags4Dorset - they have brought us to your attention and these columns are introducing us to new friends and supporters.

Lacey Lightfoot goes to…..

etition

The mags4dorset writing competition is very different this year. Meet Lacey Lightfoot

Single, white, female. Age 23. Height 5’8”. Hair long and black. Build: curvy – weight conscious. Last job: buyer for a multi-national chain store. Love life: no current boyfriend, not ready to settle down.

L

acey shares a three-bed house in Surbiton with friends. Housemate and confidante, Skip, always seems to be there when she needs him. Over-particular about her own personal appearance, Lacey tolerates Skip and his tattered looks (he’s a guitarist in a band and is waiting for his big break) because he is kind and a good listener. Lacey aims to become chief buyer by the time she is 30, until… her great aunt Sophia dies leaving her £100,000. Without hesitation, Lacey throws in the towel to become a freelance travel writer/reporter. Use the present or recent past tense (5 years). Does Lacey choose to go to areas in conflict like Sudan or Syria? Has she been swept up in the aftermath of a tsunami or earthquake? Will she be kidnapped and held hostage in Columbia, discover an unknown species in Borneo, meet gorillas in Africa or be chilling on a beach in Wales and witness sheep rustling? Lacey falls in and out of love easily, so will her Mr Right always turn out to be Mr Wrong? You get the idea. You can draw on your travelling experiences and bring in a dose of excitement, (no pornography or explicit scenes

permitted), fear, astonishment, bravery or just the ‘ah’ factor. This opens the competition up to humour, romance, thriller, mystery or even a ghost story. Take Lacey and give her an adventure of a lifetime.

Our prize structure is different to usual. An ebook anthology will be compiled called ‘Lacey Lightfoot’s Awesome Adventures’. All entrants will permit their story to be used in this way. An ebook anthology could be the first step they need on the ladder of writing success. Subject to demand, a paperback version may follow. Entrants will retain copyright of their work. Janine says, “We know from past short story competitions that we have some great story writers, but they need to be recognized more widely.” Stories can be between 1,000 and 2,500 words. There is no entry fee, but entrants must fill in an entry form (photocopies accepted) and send in 2 first class stamps (do not stick them to anything) with their entry. Double line spacing. Do not put your name on any of the pages, but submit the story with a title sheet showing your name, address, email and phone number plus the title of the work Lacey goes to (fill in the destination). Maximum of three entries per person.

Chill out at

A wacky pram race started this year’s Ferndown Festival, and a Fete on the Fields rounded it off, with plenty of feasting in between at local eateries

T

he week was hailed as a great success by the Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council. Cllr Tony Brown, deputy mayor and chairman of the pram race committee said, ”I am delighted with how the race went. It’s just great to see so many people having fun and laughing. Seeing children, mums, dads and teenagers creased up with laughter whilst watching all the pit stops highlighted what the event is all about.

“I had a brilliant organising committee who were so hardworking. Also the number of sponsors was brilliant and I would like to thank them all.” Over £2,300 was raised for various charities. Echoing the success of the Fete on the Fields, committee chair Liz Norman said, “The event was planned by a small committee of eight Ferndown residents and made possible by very generous sponsorship from Hearnes Estate Agents.” Over £2,000 was raised for KGV charity.

Full report, pram race results and more photographs can be found in the mags4dorset Ferndown Festival Online magazine at http:// mags4dorset.co.uk/ferndownfestival-online-special/#. U80Sr3Ax_8u

Chill out at your favourite eatery

When the summer nights are long and balmy, this country comes into its own. There’s no need for a vacation, a staycation in sunny Dorset with its gorgeous beaches and lively towns is as good as, or some may say better than any European holiday resort.

Just make sure you don’t get stuck in the kitchen when you could be enjoying yourself at one of the local pubs or restaurants advertising in this feature. Put the kitchen sink and the oven firmly behind you and save running up the gas bill (extortionate

Smart move for local accountants

A

busy local accountancy practice with offices in Ferndown and Southbourne has recently rebranded and undergone a facelift. TaxSmart Accounting, a local independent firm of tax accountants have recently rebranded their business and have introduced a fresh new look. Having started life as TaxAssist Accountants when they opened their first office over 4 years ago in Bournemouth, the firm that provides tax and accountancy services specifically tailored to the small business sector, soon developed a growing reputation for their proactive and personable approach to servicing their clients’ needs. Due to the continued success, a second office was opened in 2013 on Ringwood Road in Ferndown. In June of this year, the two offices were rebranded as TaxSmart Accounting with a fresh new modern look.

Partner Ashley Bainton said, “Our recent rebranding marks a new and exciting era for the continuing growth of our business. We have come a long way in the last 4 years. “Whilst the look of the offices may have changed, our commitment to providing our clients with a professional and personal value for money service is very much the same and remains as high as ever.” TaxSmart Accounting provides tax and accountancy services which are specifically tailored for local business and individuals with services ranging from bookkeeping,

payroll and VAT to tax returns and final annual accounts. “Operating from high street locations, the offices are easily accessible and we pride ourselves on offering a proactive service that caters for all your accountancy and tax needs whether you are a sole trader, partnership or limited company,” added Ashley. TaxSmart Accounting offer a free initial consultation so why not call today on 01202 895857 or call in at one of the offices located at 525 Ringwood Road, Ferndown or 105 Southbourne Grove, Bournemouth.

Mayor breaks

more than tradition

The Mayor prepares to break the chocolate

Tradition wasn’t the only thing the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Mike Parkes broke on King George V Playing Field on 11 July. As well as hosting Ferndown’s and indeed Dorset’s first ever open air, secular civic service, he produced a two foot gigantic chocolate cockerel, presented earlier in the year by the French twin town of Segres, and broke it ceremoniously on the ground to share with the entire gathering. The service, led by Humanist celebrant David Hewitt, included readings by the ATS, Scouts and town clerk Vanessa Ricketts. Dignitaries came from as far afield as Yeovil to enjoy a civic service with a difference followed by a hog roast, drinks and coq au chocolat.

HOPSCOTCH

Lorraine with Mia Norton (3), Ollie and Charlie Ball (4)

– a victim of its own success When Lorraine Clark took over as manager of the pre-school at Heatherlands in September 2012 there were just 10 children on the register. Today, Hopscotch is oversubscribed with 76 children on the register and a waiting list of those eager to join the happy throng. Lorraine said, “The drawback is that we don’t have room to accommodate more than 26 children at each session, which means we currently have to rent the adjoining sports hall three days a week to meet demand. We have been extremely lucky to be able to use this arrangement since the beginning of the year, but we know it is a short term measure.” Planning permission has now been put in to extend Hopscotch into part of the car park at the rear, which is owned

by East Dorset District Council. The proposed extension will provide a designated 2-year-olds’ facility with an additional garden overlooking the heath. “It will also alleviate traffic congestion,” says Lorraine, “because parents will be able to park easily and drop off their children at a new entrance at the back.” Local councillors are very supportive of the extension, acknowledging the benefits to the community. Ferndown Town Councillor, Debbie Marlow said, “I am in full support of the extension. My daughter used to attend Hopscotch, so I know first hand how amazing the preschool is. The extension would be beneficial to the community as a whole.” Lorraine is hopeful that approval for the extension will be granted. If it is, she and her team will be faced with the mammoth task of raising around £200,000 to fund the project and any sponsorship will be gratefully received. Hopscotch can be contacted on 01202 870789.

Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is urging local communities to work together to help stop the spread of invasive Himalayan balsam, which smothers and destroys native plants such as purple loosestrife and meadowsweet. Himalayan balsam is native to West and Central Himalayas. It grows very quickly and is renowned for its pink trumpetshaped flowers and hollow green stems. It can be found along river banks and other wetland areas. DWT is encouraging those who live near streams and rivers to pull out and uproot any Himalayan balsam plants that are on their own land to help take action and help conserve the river beds and native plants for future generations. Himalayan balsam is categorised as a ‘nonnative invasive plant’ and land owners have a legal responsibility to prevent them spreading into the wild or causing a nuisance. For more information contact Ali Quinney at Dorset Wildlife Trust on aquinney@ dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk or phone 01305 264620.

There is no need to send in your receipt, but keep it safe. If you lose it, you can’t win. The correct proof of purchase (POP) will have to be produced by the winner before they can collect their £1,000. mags4dorset cannot be held responsible for any lost or missing receipts and the prize will instead be donated to our charity of the year. lassic Clapton, the World’s No1 Eric Clapton tribute band featuring front-man Mike Hall will be making a welcome return to The Regent Centre in Christchurch on 13 September. When they

appeared there in 2013 the concert was a sell out. The band will perform all of EC’s classic songs including Wonderful Tonight, Tears in Heaven, Crossroads, I Shot The Sheriff, Cocaine, Lay Down Sally and of course Layla. The band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle upon Tyne long before the term tribute band was invented. In Guitar/vocalist Mike Hall, the band has a front man who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too. In 1999 Mike won a national look-alike competition held at Madam Tussauds in London. Mike

has met Slowhand twice and even received a message of encouragement from the guitar maestro (written on a Concorde menu). In 2001 Classic Clapton embarked on an extensive tour of UK Theatres. Since then, they have continued to perform all over the UK and Europe and even in Mumbai. In the past 29 years they have become something of a rock institution. The band has released three albums:The Music of Eric Clapton, Classic Clapton unplugged and Classic Cream. All three will be available at The Regent Centre. Doors at the Regent open at 7pm on Saturday 13 September with the band on stage at 7.30pm. Festival fun in Spetisbury Volunteers are coming together to make sure The Music and Merriment Festival at Spetisbury Rings on the 15-16 August is a success.

E

veryone who performs at, or works on the festival does so for free, allowing every penny of profit to be donated to support The Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

There is something for everyone at the family friendly festival; 12 hours of fantastic music, kids’ zone, real ale and cider bar, locally sourced food, hot air balloon display, Edwardian tearooms along with am amazing view. The festival first ran in 2009. Growing up at the foot of Spetisbury Rings, Tim Wood always thought it would be a great place for a festival. It wasn’t until his

mum Teresa sadly died from cancer in 2006, and was so incredibly well cared for by The Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, that he had a reason great enough to finally attempt it.

The outstanding care and support the trust provides to its patients and families is free of charge and to provide this they need to find 75% of their funding from events like Music and Merriment.

Entirely selffunded Tim, his sister Jenny and four of their friends organised their first festival, which was a fantastic success. This one-off festival has now been held three times.

Tickets are available at www.musicandmerriment.co.uk and The Woodpecker pub in Spetisbury.

LEO July 24 - August 23 Ask for a raise or better office on or around the 21st. The New Moon on the 25th will force you to adopt a more realistic attitude toward work. Stop expecting so much from your employer, especially in these difficult economic times. Don’t let somebody undermine your confidence as August turns to September.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 A colleague will confide some juicy secrets during the third week of August. Beware of accepting a career opportunity on the 25th, as there will be several strings attached. You’re better off holding out for another offer, as the employer in question likes to engage in emotional blackmail.

VIRGO August 24 - September 23 Spending time on your own throughout the second half of August will prove therapeutic. You’ll start getting the recognition you deserve in the third week of the month. Be realistic when making demands of a business or romantic partner on the 25th.

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20 Money from an inheritance, refund, or dividend will allow you to afford some beautiful books and artwork during the third week of August. The New Moon on the 25th will prompt you to take a primer course, just to fill in some basic gaps in your knowledge.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Get to grips with domestic matters and DIY projects during the second half of the month. This is a great time to launch a repair or renovation. You might even decide to move to a new place, but be sure to get the terms down in black and white before arranging for movers and be sure to check out every nook and cranny of the property before you make your mind up.

LIBRA September 24 - October 23 A friend will invite you on a luxurious vacation on or around the 18th; be sure to accept. The New Moon on the 25th may prompt you to isolate yourself from the crowd. Try not to alienate a colleague. Turning your back on this particular workmate will create a deep, hidden resentment. The last thing you need is an enemy at work.

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19 The second half of the month will be perfect for making inroads to an intimate relationship. Avoid being overly critical of your best friend or lover on the 25th, when the New Moon sharpens your focus. Nobody likes to be corrected, especially when they’ve ventured out of their comfort zone. Give credit where credit is due.

CANCER June 22 - July 23 The Full Moon on the 10th forces you to dig deep to pay a debt. A powerful business or romantic partner will get good news in the second half of August, triggering a marvellous celebration. Be realistic when planning a short trip around the 25th. Time will be limited.

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 The Full Moon on the 10th brings an end to a difficult family matter. You’ll be angry when things don’t go your way, but that can’t be helped. Focus on pursuing a glamorous client or work assignment instead. The New Moon on the 25th forces you to draw a boundary with a needy friend. You simply can’t be on call for this troubled soul any longer.

PISCES February 20 - March 20 The second half of August will prompt you to demand more from the people you love. You’re tired of giving all the time and receiving very little in return. Try to express your needs in a calm, rational way. People are prone to blow off angry outbursts. If you start getting shrill, take a deep breath and count to ten.

RUSSELL GRANT

MONTHLY HOROSCOPES

Aug 2014 ARIES March 21 - April 20 The third week of August will turn out to be very productive; don’t be surprised when an executive singles you out for favourable attention. The 25th marks a health oriented New Moon. This is the best time to launch a fitness programme, but resist the urge to overdo it. Slow and steady wins the race. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 Domestic pursuits will be especially fulfilling throughout the second half of August. Beware of taking a budding romance too far, too fast in the days surrounding the 25th. If this love affair is going to last, you need to make the most of the courtship phase. Don’t let your relatives interfere with your private life as August turns to September.

Mighty Motoring Marvels

motoring

Hyundai ix35 4WD Premium Panorama Stephen Turvil - stephenturvil@googlemail.com

Abracadabra! The Hyundai ix35 4WD Premium Panorama might have been created by magic. Why? Because it suits a spell-binding range of motorists thanks to its sensible running costs, four-wheel-drive system, large boot, reassuring safety features and skyhigh specification. Power comes via its 2.0-litre 134bhp diesel engine that averages 40.4mpg. Its 183g/km carbon emission ensures the VED Road Tax Rate is £345 in year one then £225 thereafter (based on current rates). Furthermore, this power plant propels magic car lovers to 62mph in a respectable 12.1 seconds. More important, however, is that the 320Nm of torque ensures the vehicle pulls nicely throughout the rev-range. As if by magic, the motorist can also put the transmission into a mode that enables him/her to select every gear manually. This workhorse corners without fuss and has a comfortable ride. It also - in normal conditions - only sends power to the front wheels, which minimises fuel consumption. It then automatically flicks to fourwheel-drive if the road surface becomes slippery. See, ‘magic’.

Cargo capacity is a mighty 591-litres rising to 1,436-litres once the rear seats are folded flat - so this workhorse can carry a lot of magic tricks. The cabin is also spacious with enough leg, head and shoulder room for four/five people to travel in comfort. There is a wide range of safety features including the electronic stability programme that makes cornering safer, powerful antilock brakes with ventilated discs, emergency stop signalling and a tyre pressure monitoring system that alerts the driver to punctures. These helped it earn Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating. Furthermore, this top of the range trim has a collection of toys including the leather seats, panoramic roof, automatic wipers and sat-nav. It also has a key-less entry system that unlocks the doors as it senses its owner approaching. It then starts via a button rather than a key, which magically makes life easier.

All from £27,615 including its five year warranty. Abracadabra!
