First let me wish you a Happy New Year. I do hope your Christmas went well, ours was very family orientated as usual, but a first one without Louis. We did miss him, but he is having a fantastic time in Australia and updates us weekly. He’s working on a farm, upside down I suppose, (what a talented son I have) and sounds incredibly happy. On Boxing Day, Ben chose to cook duck for a crowd of us another very talented son - as busy at home as he is at work. His latest push in the office is for a new website, which should go live this month. It celebrates our ten years in business and will have a completely new look. There are nearly 100,000 web page viewings every month so with the new site offering a more interactive experience, we hope to encourage even more visitors. We’re starting the new year with a photographic competition on the subject of wildlife and want budding photographers to find that winning shot to go on our front cover. If you haven’t made your New Year Resolution yet, turn to the centre pages and discover 13 things to do in 2013. The feature is sure to sort you out. Have a great month,

Ferndown people will be letting their hair down on 29 June 2013 when the town’s first pram race pushes off. Aimed at raising money for charity, this fun event will cover a short course taking in four pit stops. Team members must drink a pint (beer or fruit based), with no spillage, at each one. These are the Old Thatch, Pure Drop, Night Jar and White Heather. All team members must be 18 or over on the day, including the ‘baby’ who has to remain in the pram throughout the race, even when downing his/ her pint. The pram should be based on a pram design with two axels and four wheels – no form of propulsion other than pushing is allowed. Find yourself a big baby and get your team together now. The XXX trophy will be awarded to the fastest team, and there will be awards for the best dressed teams and best engineered pram. For more details call Tony Brown 07515 493490. You’re never too old for Tae Kwon-Do John Bushell recently attained his yellow belt in Tae Kwon-Do. He took part in a grading along with over 100 other members of Stephen Lamberth’s Schools of Tae Kwon-Do and Self Defence and proved that age is no barrier to the sport. At 80, he was the oldest person to participate. Stephen Lamberth, whose schools hosted the event said, “We are very proud as a club to say that currently we have the oldest beginner in the country. He truly is an inspiration. I can only hope that I, like John, am active at 80 years of age. I admire his determination and zest for life. You are never too old to start anything.” John who lives in New Milton says, “Since I have been training in Tae Kwon-Do, it has

lightened my days, they were dark before I started this activity and it really has lightened my life. I do wish I’d started years ago when I was posted out in Korea. Still, I am doing it now with the instructor’s assistance and the fantastic support of all the club members around me.”

Plain packs supported Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, has called on the government to follow the Australian lead and introduce plain, standardised cigarette packaging in the UK. Since December 2012, cigarettes in Australia have to be sold in dark olive brown packets Annett Brooke MP which are mostly covered in health warnings. Research has shown that plain packaging would reduce tobacco’s attractiveness, increase the effectiveness of health warnings and stop misleading claims about the harms of smoking.

After an unforgettable 2012, the host of the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is looking ahead to a bright future. A total of 30 sailing events are already booked for 2013. These range from the large Topper fleet to the prestigious International Dragon fleet. The events will give the academy and peripheral suppliers a full season’s worth or activity and an excellent continuation of the academy’s legacy on not only the world of competitive sailing but also the local economy. New website

for mags4dorset

In celebration of ten years in business, mags4dorset is launching a brand new website. Design director, Ben Pulford, says, “Although our existing website is really popular, I wanted to give it a complete makeover. There have been many advances in online media and the interaction between websites has grown since we first launched mags4dorset.co.uk. It now has a fresh, new feel with additional functions like an image gallery and is more of an interactive experience for our online readers.” The site has been designed by Pixelhaus Studios and should go live this month. The mags4dorset website receives around 100,000 page views a month and the new site currently has advertising space available. To snap it up quickly give Russell or Mark a call on 01202 870270.

New assessment needed East Dorset District councillors have recommended that an updated local needs assessment be prepared with regards to the consultation report on the gypsy, traveller and travelling show people site allocation plan. Although the results from the Dorset consultation have been produced, previous data relating to the need for permanent and transit sites is now five years old and its validity has been questioned. Also, the government introduced a new planning policy for traveller sites in March 2012 requiring local councils to look again at the way they have assessed the need for sites in the past and to prepare new figures, if necessary. Any new assessments will give authorities the opportunity to more

accurately evaluate how many sites are needed. No decisions will be made about the sites previously consulted upon, or any proposals for alternative sites, until councils are sure of the demand for sites resulting from an up-to-date needs assessment. Cllr Spencer Flower, Leader of East Dorset District Council, said, “The council recognises the sensitivity of this subject and it is important that we get this right. We support the government’s request for local authorities to carry out a detailed analysis of the number of sites which may be needed for gypsies and travellers. I am confident that this would help us reach conclusions about which sites, if any, should go forward to the next stage of the Site Allocations Development Plan.”

BUSINESS COMMUNITY UNITY - SUCCESS STORIES

Business Success Stories – Nicholas O’Hara Nicholas O’Hara is an award winning, family owned and run funeral directors established nearly 40 years ago. Their success story is built on hard work and a caring ethos. You received two awards in 2012, what do these mean to you? In our industry, being a real family business is quite rare, so it was rewarding to be recognised in this capacity. For the third year running, we became Golden Charter’s Regional Funeral Planner of the Year, making us the first English company to achieve this. We were also honoured with the Blackmore Media title of Family Business of the Year. Our main aim is to provide the highest level of customer service. We control all aspects of our business and work with each family to meet their expectations. We believe the awards reflect that as a family business, we can achieve this. It is the work we love and the awards are a bonus.

What changes have you seen in the industry over the last 10 years? One of the biggest changes is in the personalisation of funerals including the choice of minister. Almost 50% of funerals today are not led by a traditional minister. Music, pictures and colour are other ways people choose to make a funeral a day of celebration, which is now one of the main aims. More people are choosing cremation over burial and this leads them into

doing something meaningful with the cremated remains such as burial in a local cemetery or scattering at a favourite spot. New ways to remember loved ones include having the ashes made into jewellery or sent into the sky in a firework.

Your distinctive silver fleet was a brave move away from traditional black hearses. Are you pleased with the way they have been received? When Nicholas chose to have a silver fleet many of our competitors thought it would be a failure, but the vehicles have become our identity. We are asked to conduct funerals from a wide area because people are impressed by our unique hearse and the limousines and want their loved one’s last journey to be carried out in style. We also feel silver makes the day that bit lighter and we now dress our funeral staff in blue. More families than ever before want the day to primarily be a celebration of life and we feel black doesn’t reflect this. We will never go back to a black fleet as silver really works for us.

Do you have any advice on funeral plans? Be wary when choosing a funeral plan. The only

way to guarantee the funeral you want with the services of your funeral director, is to purchase the plan through them. Many plans advertised in newspapers are sold on behalf of large groups. This can mean your funeral is carried out miles away and you may not have the option to include your personal wishes. When taking out our funeral plan, we guide you through every step making sure that your wishes are recorded so that your family can uphold them. We also guarantee to freeze the price of the funeral at today’s costs. Payment can be made by instalments, as a ‘whole of life’ plan or in one payment. If you move home, your plan can be transferred to your new area.

With three offices in the area, your success is evident. Do you have plans to expand further? In the last few years, our Verwood and West Moors offices have doubled in size to incorporate more office space and extra chapels of rest. Plans are in motion for a large expansion of our head office at Wimborne. We want every part of what we do for families to be special and make them feel comfortable and know that their loved ones are being cared for in the best ways.

local Mags4dorset is pleased to support the Bournemouth and District Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society as its charity of the year for 2013. The branch has a centre at West Parley called the Osborne Centre and over the next year, through a monthly letter from Alan Lindsay, you will discover more about this organisation.

Dear Readers

The garden at The Osborne Centre

Firstly, please let me introduce myself. My name is Alan Lindsay and I am proud to be president of the Bournemouth and District Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. This year our branch has been lucky enough to be sponsored by mags4dorset enabling me to tell you all about our centre at West Parley. In the next 11 issues I will be able, through the generosity of this super magazine, to introduce you to the Osborne Centre, the facilities it offers, complete with the activities undertaken both by the branch members and our wonderful band of volunteers. My hope is that you will find my letters interesting and in bringing our charity to your attention you will want to find out more about our branch, the centre and the support you could give us. Who knows, perhaps you may even consider becoming one of our intrepid volunteers. It really is a happy friendly place to visit so why not come and get involved, even for a couple of hours a week?

Sleeping Beauty presented by Martin Dodd

Bournemouth Pavilion Playing until 6 January 2013 Review by Chris Deane Sleeping Beauty is another spectacular panto directed by Chris Jarvis. Playing to a full house with lots of children eager to boo and hiss, not a moment went by without something exciting happening. Energy machine Jarvis (Happy Harry) got the audience going with ‘Happy Feet.’ There were sweets flying, screams of “sausages” egged on by Michael Chance (King Littledown) and a large water pistol aimed at the kids, to their utter delight. Asa Elliott (Prince) and Kate Weston (Fairy Sparkle) sang beautifully and Su Pollard (Carabosse) wouldn’t be Su Pollard if she wasn’t loud, and she didn’t disappoint. One of my favourite scenes was when the toys came to life including mice, teddy bears and drummer boys. It was wonderful. Another memorable scene was Asa singing with the Stage Door School of Dance and Drama. The flying prince after the interval was magical. And the children who made it on stage were delightful. The panto was enjoyed by grown ups and children alike with lots of hisses, boos, laughter and clapping. A must see pantomime with a lovely, happy ending.

Rusty tools wanted

The Osborne Centre So, where to begin? At the beginning may be good! The branch was actually formed on 8 December 1964 when a group of people, largely from TocH and the Masons, jointly decided that Bournemouth should have a contact centre for people with MS. They rented an old hall near Pokesdown but after a few short years managed to purchase a larger hall in Walpole Road, Boscombe. The branch flourished throughout the 70s and early 80s until it was decided to move again, this time to a purpose built building on the outskirts of the town. Many sites were looked at before Church Lane, West Parley was chosen and on 9 June 1985, the Osborne Day Centre was officially opened. Next month we’ll begin to explore our branch in more detail.

Forever families required Adoption experts in Dorset are calling for people who can make a difference to children’s lives. To legally adopt, you must be over 21 and fit and healthy enough to care for a child. Enquiries from single people and couples, including same sex couples will be considered. Adopters do not need to be homeowners.

Cllr Toni Coombs, cabinet member for children’s services at Dorset County Council, said, “There are many children in Dorset who need the stability and love from a family for life. We’re looking for people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Adopting a child can be really rewarding, and we would love to hear from you if you are interested in finding out more.”

his is a variation on traditional fish pie and does not have a mashed potato topping. It is easy to make, and the choice of ingredients means it can be produced as an inexpensive dish or as a luxury dinner party starter. The shaped pastry biscuits are an attractive feature to encourage children to try a fish dish, and Dorset is of course well supplied with a variety of local fish. For a basic pie, most supermarkets sell a mixture of good quality fish off-cuts, but make sure that at least one sort of smoked fish is included. For a special dish, almost any combination of such fish as salmon, trout, smoked haddock, prawns or shellfish can be included.

Ingredients 450g (1lb) mixed fish 100g (4oz) frozen mixed vegetables 300 ml (½ pint ) roux sauce 100g (4oz) frozen shortcrust pastry Method

Carefully wash the fish and boil it for approximately 8-10 minutes. When cool, tip into a large bowl, flake and remove any skin and bones. Boil the mixed vegetables for 3–4 minutes, drain and add to the fish mixture. White (roux) sauce (Can be made on hob or in microwave) Melt 25g (1oz) butter and add 25g (1oz) plain flour. Blend well together with ½ pint of warm milk and 25g (1oz) grated cheese. Stir until it thickens, then pour over the fish and vegetables, mix well. Transfer to an 800ml (1¼ pint) pie dish or four ramekins, season to taste – a small spoonful of tartare sauce is optional. Fishy biscuits These can be made a day or two ahead. Roll the shortcrust pastry and cut out the fish shapes you want. Brush them with egg yolk and bake until almost golden brown. Decorate the fish mix with them and return to the oven. (Gas Mark 4, 180ºC) until it is piping hot and serve with a green vegetable if desired. Should you have more pie than is required, the surplus can be made into a gorgeous fish chowder, by adding sufficient milk and a dash of pepper to give a rich soupy texture.

local Plans submitted for one of UK’s biggest solar farms One of the UK’s biggest solar energy farms could be built on the outskirts of Christchurch if planners give the green light. Solar Power Generation Ltd has applied for permission to build a 118 acre (48 hectare) farm on land owned by Eco Sustainable Solutions at Parley. The area involved is the equivalent of 65 football pitches. If approved, the solar farm will take about six months to build and, once commissioned, will operate for approximately 25 years.

Chippy ‘batters’ the competition Local fish and chip shop, Salt & Vinegar in Ferndown, is one of three chip shops in the country to be in the running for the ‘Best Newcomer’ in the National Fish and Chip Shop Awards. Owner Karen Milner said, “This is a fantastic achievement. We only opened our doors here in Ferndown in December 2010, so in less than two years we have come from nothing to being one of the top three fish and chip shops in the UK. It’s our anniversary too, what a way to celebrate.” The winner will be announced on 24 January.

Presents from ‘Mother Christmas’ At the Christmas meeting, members of Verwood Afternoon TG were treated to tea and home-made mince pies, a raffle and an amusing performance by the guild’s entertainers group. Each member also received a present from ‘Mother Christmas’. Another celebration was the ‘Festive Fair’, with stollen, mince pies and hot chocolate, plus a silent auction. In January the guild celebrates its 32nd birthday, and begins another busy year.

BUSINESS COMMUNITY UNITY - CARE FEATURE

ENGLAND ARE YOU SITTING – one of the best - advertising feature -

in the world?

A

ccording to health secretary Jeremy Hunt, the government wants to see England become one of the best in the world at looking after the elderly. We all know that the local authorities are pushed to their limits and fewer people are getting the services they need at home, but there are things we can do to help. If you have an elderly friend or relative nearby, make a point of visiting on a regular basis and offer to help with the shopping or suggest days out. If you notice they are getting hard of hearing, their eyesight is failing or they need mobility aids, you could suggest that they visit the professionals who can help. You may have to help arrange this for them and help with transport. But these simple tasks go a long way to improving the life of an elderly person. And if they become too frail to live at home and have to move into caring facilities, these should be chosen diligently and regular visits maintained. This mags4dorset Business Community Unity feature provides a good starting point for mobility aids, hearing aids and care homes.

COMFORTABLY? • • • •

I

Can you get up from your chair easily? Do you suffer from stiff joints, back ache or poor circulation? Do you need to raise your legs to relieve the pressure in your legs? Do you need to recline to get comfortable?

f these questions apply to you, then your old chair is probably not helping you to achieve your needs. Unfortunately, most chairs found in furniture retailers are manufactured to fit Mr and Mrs Average. Whilst you wouldn’t buy shoes that don’t fit, why even consider a chair that doesn’t fit you? If you feel you need a little help with the problems listed above there is a wide selection of rise and recline chairs that can assist you standing up and relaxing at the touch of a button. With dual and single motors, excellent range of fabrics, sizes to accommodate everyone and prices to suit most budgets. Certain ranges also incorporate a

massage and heat system that will manipulate away aches and pains associated with backache. Products such as these often allow the individual the ability to maintain independence and a reduction in carer involvement. If you or someone you care for are considering this specific option for health reasons, it is better to obtain advice from retailers who specialise in mobility and other health related products, trained to access individual requirements. Visit Freedom Mobility on Penny’s Walk in the centre of Ferndown to see what they can offer you. Or call 01202 874317 for more information.

DISABILITY LIVING ALLOWANCE

Q. My sister is becoming disabled with arthritis and has problems doing everyday things she used to take for granted. She can’t afford help. Is there anything you can suggest? A. Encourage your sister to apply for Disability Living Allowance (DLA), a benefit for disabled people under 65 who have personal care needs or difficulty with walking. To qualify, you need to have had care or mobility needs (or both) for at least three months, and be likely to have these for at least another six months. You don’t have to be getting help to qualify for DLA and it doesn’t matter if you’re working or not. DLA will not reduce any other entitlement, it may even increase it. To claim DLA call the Benefit Enquiry Line on 0800 88 22 00 and ask for a claim form, or do it online on www.direct.gov.uk. CAB advisers can help with completing the form. hree years ago Clarity Hearing Solutions opened their first hearing centre in Christchurch High Street. In that time they have become one of the fastest growing, independent hearing specialists in the country. Now they have opened a new centre at 2 St Stephen’s Lane, Verwood. Director and hearing aid audiologist Heather Cowell says ”It’s lovely to be here in Verwood where we already have many clients. A good many local residents will know me from my 20+ years working as the lead practice nurse at Verwood Surgery.” Heather adds “We have three qualified hearing aid audiologists at Clarity Hearing and we all live in Verwood so it made a lot of sense for us to open our second centre here. We really look forward to welcoming both existing and new clients to our spacious, modern, dedicated hearing centre.” Complete independence allows Clarity Hearing to offer

hearing solutions from all of the world’s leading manufacturers. This includes the very latest ‘invisible’ hearing aids and a whole range of smart, discreet devices to suit all budgets. If you think your hearing is not as good as it should be call Clarity Hearing for a free evaluation. They will undertake a detailed test at no charge and be able to advise you whether you would benefit from assistance and, if so, discuss a range of options with you. There will be no high pressure tactics, just honest, professional advice to help you make an informed decision. You could also pop along to their open day on Friday, 25 January between 10am and 3pm.

A major focus is on improving the living experience for the care home’s residents through a mixture of methods including consultancy support, direct coaching, training and increasing positive moments. “We all live in the moment – moments matter,” says Terry Bailey, the manager. “For everyone with or without a dementia all we

have is now. We cannot yet fix dementia as a condition but we can fix our approach. Showing people living with a dementia that we know their feelings matter most can transform lives. Using the metaphor of a butterfly. Staff who ‘get it’, know in their heart that quality of life matters. They learn how to look, sound

and feel like butterflies at work. Being natural in dementia care involves flitting between people, being still, connecting, creating colour and changing moments. “We are extremely committed and working hard to improve services to those with dementia and Alzheimer’s.”

REVOLUTIONISED CARE

B

urwood Nursing Home in Broadstone has revolutionised the meaning of care, and introduced a new concept, Yaffle Care, which brings enjoyment and stimulation directly to those living at the home. A brand new, 42-bedroom facility allows residents to enjoy the activities they love, all in the comfort of their own home. “We want our residents to have the chance to say yes,” says owner Sarah Jessup. “They may not be able to physically go out to the theatre or pop down to the local pub for a nightcap, but at Yaffle, we have a 1920s’ Art Deco style theatre; our very own ‘Railway Tavern’ and a kitchen for residents to cook and bake in.” Yaffle Care has created a home that includes

everything a home should, providing not only excellent care but stimulation, variety and fun. “We have moved away from that typical impression that people have of nursing homes where residents all go to the main lounge to play bingo and cards, watch the TV or have a sing along. At Yaffle you go to the pub to play cards, watch a show in the theatre and bake cakes in the kitchen.” This brand new concept could revolutionise the way in which we care for our elderly citizens. By providing a community within a community, Yaffle will give the elderly and infirm something to look forward to in their later years. If you would like more information about the care provided at Yaffle, call Sarah on 01202 693224 for a brochure or pop in for a tour of the new home.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON CARERS’ STRATEGY

C

arers in Dorset are being asked to have their say on a new carers’ strategy for Dorset. A consultation is running until 4 March, and a number of local priorites have been proposed by Dorset County Council and NHS Dorset including supporting people to identify themselves as carers; and involving carers in future service developments. The council is now asking people for their views on the draft strategy. The responses will be used to inform the final version and will underpin an action plan for the next three years. Details of the strategy and consultation documents can be found on www. consultationtracker.dorsetforyou.com. The results of the consultation will be announced at Merley in Wimborne on 26 March.

SURVIVING WINTER APPEAL

D

orset Community Foundation is at the forefront of an appeal to dramatically reduce cold weather related deaths in county. Last winter there were 500 cold related deaths during the 10 weeks of winter. The Surviving Winter Appeal is helping to raise awareness and funds to help people at risk – those struggling with social isolation, fuel poverty and cold related illnesses. The statistics are dreadful. Of the 500 that died, over 200 were residents of Bournemouth and Poole. Poorly insulated homes and flats, particularly rented accommodation, fuel poverty and social isolation are the reasons why winter is a silent killer for many older people. Daisy Ilchovska, Appeal Manager of Dorset Community Foundation says, “You can help to put a stop to these deaths by making a donation to the appeal or by looking out for your elderly neighbours. “For many, the fear of running up large fuel bills they can’t afford, means they turn down the heating and sit at home in room temperatures that are far too cold for their health. Room temperatures below 15° put an older person at risk of a heart attack, 12° can trigger a stroke and at 9° there is the real possibility of dying from hypothermia.” The Surviving Winter Appeal is urging anyone who receives a winter fuel allowance, but does not need it, to donate part or all of their allowance towards helping to protect less fortunate older people who may be at risk this winter. Every penny donated to the appeal will be used to help local pensioners struggling with fuel poverty and social isolation.

Volleyball star meets stars of the future

Zara Dampney meets Coastal hearty device young volleyball aces The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) lookout at St Albans Head has acquired a defibrillator, a device that can save the life of someone suffering from a heart attack. The equipment was installed thanks to a generous donation from Anne Quarrie in memory of her husband, Chris - a popular NCI Station Manager, who died of a heart attack in 2011. The defibrillator is attached to the outside of the building so that it can be used any time by members of the public. A spokesman for St Albans Head NCI said, “As well as helping safeguard those at sea, we also have a responsibility to help anyone in trouble on the coast path. The defibrillator will enable us to do this more effectively.”

Team GB star Zara Dampney served up a training camp at the UK’s first, and only, indoor beach volleyball centre. The beach volleyball Olympian was at the LeAF elite sporting academy in Bournemouth to rally behind teenage sensations Sam Allen and Sam Walrond who flew out to Rio in November to compete in the Brazilian School Games. Zara passed on her wealth of experience to the two 16-year-olds prior to them taking part in their first international beach volleyball competition. “This is what it’s all about – finding young talent, nurturing them and passing on coaching and skills that can see them through to competing on the world stage,” said Zara Dampney. “The two Sams are great prospects and I wish them all the success in the world.”

Sportsmen and women honoured

www.poolegrammar.com

Young sportsmen and women in Christchurch were honoured at the 18th annual Christchurch and District Sports Council Sports Achievement Awards, held at East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club. The awards were handed out by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Peter Hall, for success in rowing, sailing, football, cricket, rugby, fencing, weightlifting, trampolining, judo and kurash. Ten bronze awards were given for county standard success in sporting competitions with three silver awards for national standard success. Gold awards for international standard success went to Lucy Rayner who was placed 2nd in the British Senior powerlifting championships; Jack Arnell who was a Finn gold cup competitor in the world championships held in Falmouth this year; and Tyler Charig, Jacob Grant and Daniel Grant, all of whom won bronze medals at the 2012 World Junior and Cadet Kurash Championships (kurash is the national sport of Uzbekistan, similar to judo). A further 64 awards will be presented at an awards ceremony to commend members of the Seagulls Swimming Club in February.

Writers entertain the blind Members of the Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind were recently entertained by the ‘Writers’ Group’. Nine writers and a smug looking teddy bear read and acted out prose and poetry, some from published work and some from pieces they had written. December also saw the return of Trish Coundley, another entertainer who is very popular amongst members. The new term starts on 10 January 2013 with a late Christmas lunch at the Tyrrell’s Ford Hotel. Two or three more volunteers are needed to drive members to and from meetings. Three-year plan to transform Boscombe The ‘Boscombe Commitment,’ led by Chief Executive of Bournemouth Council, Tony Williams, is a threeyear plan launched last November in front of more than 170 staff from a range of organisations. Frontline workers who attended the event represented a host of public and third sector organisations. The Boscombe Regeneration Partnership will take positive action over the next three years to tackle six key issues which include housing, crime and fear of crime, employment and enterprise, health, environment and education and attainment. Councillor Jane Kelly, Cabinet Member for Partnerships and Regeneration said, “This marks the relaunch of our ‘Backing Boscombe’ campaign to regenerate and transform Boscombe for the better for residents, businesses and visitors. What is vitally important to the success of this campaign is ensuring that every frontline worker in Boscombe is on board with the Regeneration Partnership’s plans and understands what we all have to do to make it successful.”

Dorset’s first Police and Crime Commissioner

E

lected as the first Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner on 15 November 2012, Martyn Underhill stood as an Independent candidate and has vowed to keep politics out of policing. In a job that pays £70,000pa, his biggest priority is,“To ensure that we have fewer victims, and that those victims we do have, are given an empathetic, expeditious, understanding and professional journey.” Martyn adds, “Victims of crime are a huge priority for me. We must get better than we already are at understanding their needs, and making sure their needs are met.” Development of the special constabulary is also high on his priorities. “It is a fantastic resource that is not used anywhere near enough in Dorset,” he says, “I will explore, over my four year term, how to recognise the role of a special constable financially, as they are now doing in London.” He wants to help the rural communities that may be feeling marginalised by cuts to rural

police funding. “I will put a special constable in each of your communities or each of your villages - recruit someone from the community for the community,” he says. His manifesto includes ‘Making Our Police More Visible’, and to achieve this, he would like to double the amount of special constables. He also aims to issue a portable ‘tablet’ to each officer/ PCSO, so that they can complete their crime reporting online while on patrol rather than having to return to the police station to fill out their reports, meaning the officers can remain more visible by staying on patrol. Maintaining marine policing and finding the funds to purchase two ribs is another of his aims. The additional money required to fund his manifesto he hopes will come from government; realignment of priorities inside the organisation after discussions with the chief constable; or, as a last resort, by selling real estate such as the old Bournemouth and Poole police stations and police housing.

Broadstone’s Town Team kick started Broadstone businesses and community have received a welcome boost following a successful bid for a government fund. Innovative plans developed by the local Chamber of Trade and Residents Association, supported by local MP Annette Brooke, have been awarded £10,000 along with additional business support as part of government plans to revitalise Britain’s high streets. Broadstone originally made a bid for up to £100,000 last year from the ‘Mary Portas Fund.’ Like the majority of applicants, the bid was unsuccessful but new funding was released by government. The funding will allow some of the original proposals from the Portas bid to be taken forward and the Chamber of Trade will become a ‘Town Team’ working with other associations, and in consultation with the community.

£22M for enhanced recycling schemes Bournemouth and the Dorset Waste Partnership have gained government grant funding for two recycling and waste schemes totalling almost £22 million. A total of £7.1M will be allocated to improving recycling and waste operations in Bournemouth. The remaining £14.2M will be spent on developing and building a new joint recycling sorting facility in the local area in partnership with Dorset Waste Partnership. Councillor Michael Filer, portfolio holder for Transport, Cleansing & Waste, said, “A local plant will bring substantial

efficiency and cost savings to all partner authorities through having to avoid sending recyclable materials elsewhere in the country.” In October 2012, the Dorset Waste Partnership introduced a new ‘Recycle for Dorset’ service. During the first month of the service, the recycling rate in Christchurch doubled to more than 70 per cent. Despite this statistic, some householders are struggling with the new service, particularly the elderly and those with health problems. See the letters on page 23.

One year ends, another begins The Christmas meeting of Christchurch Central WI was fun packed with a display of members’ handicrafts and items on sale. The drama group entertained and a small gift was presented to producer Margaret Humphrey as a thank you. A Christmas lunch and carol service rounded off a busy and successful year. Members are now looking forward to the pantomime and the start of another interesting year.

Richard Digance lights up Ferndown Ferndown came alive on 8 December with the Hollyberry Fayre, stalls in Penny’s Walk and the Christmas tree lights switchon by comedian and folk singer, Richard Digance. 22...4Dorset January 2013

Town crier Mike Andrews kept everyone informed of the proceedings and the Mayor, Cllr Terry Cordery, welcomed Richard Digance for the first celebrity ‘switch-on’ in the town. The star offered free copies of his poetry book, ‘Father Christmas’s Tale’ for a donation to the John Thornton Young Achievers’ Foundation and he stayed behind to sign copies for his fans. Musician and comedian Matt Black brought his own brand of entertainment to the Stone Lounge shortly afterwards, where free glasses of mulled wine created a festive spirit. Matt treated everyone to a comedy show with bells on. So endearing was he, that he inspired one youngster, Evie Collins to sing ‘Little Donkey’. Aged only seven, Evie, gave a perfect rendition to a stunned audience who applauded loudly. Evie’s parents Jo and Steve Collins from Collins Catering Services said, “We didn’t think she’d sing in front of such a lot of people, we are very proud of her. Both she and her older sister sing beautifully.” Evie

To see the video of Evie singing, please go to www.facebook.com/mags4dorset.news The whole event, organised by the Barrington Centre, the Town Council and Ferndown Chamber of Commerce was hailed as a huge success. Shaun Flynn, president of Ferndown Chamber of Commerce said, “It was great to see so many people enjoying Ferndown and seeing what it has to offer, sincere thanks to all involved and in particular Richard Digance, Matt Black, our town crier and of course Cllr Terry Cordery our mayor. We are looking forward to more events in 2013, please keep reading 4Dorset and Ferndown Matters for details. “As soon as Christmas is over we will be working on a week long event with a pram race on 29 June and markets.” The Chamber of Commerce raffled a bike, donated by Pedals Cycle Centre, and raised £257 for Julia’s House. The winning ticket was purchased by Cathy Gardiner from Ferndown.

CORRESPONDENCE

am responding to your invitation to voice my tho ughts on the new household was te collection – rubbish! Twice the lorry has called at the communal bins for our flats and gone away without emp tying them because items are in the wrong bins. They are now overflowin g. Our management commit tee tell us that they will need to bring in a private firm and charge us. Most of the flats are sub-let, as the tenants are always cha nging and they couldn’t care less where they put their rubbish, so the problem is never going to get any better. Also, to add to the chaos, many of us who actually own and live in our flats are in our 80s, in poor health and think we are doing well to actually get across to the bins with any kind of rubbish. What do we think of the new service? Rubbish!

Y

ou asked for feedback on the new household waste service. Well the old service worked well. We had weekly collections and people generally knew what they were doing and what to put into what. There’s an old saying that if it ain’t broken then don’t fix it. But the objective of the council is to save money and comply with EU directives on green policies and recycling. So now we have even more bins to put things in. Some are so large and heavy that you need to go to the gym to get strong enough drag them to the designated area for collection when they are full. It’s okay if you are a young body builder but not good for OAPs with arthritis. Now we have to pay to have our garden rubbish removed - that used to be free. In my area of Ferndown we all put out our garden waste bins (or at least the few who were prepared to pay for this) and no-one came. Calls to the waste management service were ignored as they wouldn’t answer their phone. In fact no-one came for over a week and a half. A service really worth paying for! We used to be able to put out our general rubbish in sacks and leave any larger items close by and the wonderful binny men would take it all. Now if it doesn’t fit in the bin, they won’t take it. Also I can’t wait for the summer with the all those lovely little food waste bins stinking and attracting flies and vermin. I see that the government is thinking about forcing councils to go back to weekly collections but no, apparently the local authorities say that we don’t want this (I don’t remember them asking me). Well no doubt some manager in the local authority along with a committee of thousands spent many hours and meetings coming up with this. No doubt someone got an award and is considered a hero of the household waste and recycling brigade. What will be next? Special towing kits to fit to the back of vehicles so you can drag your bins to the rubbish depot yourself. Do you know, I might just get an award for coming up with this innovative idea! Good luck to us all. We’ll need it, Ian Smith (email)

Aladdin Review by Kris Davy

Who’s ever heard of Aladdin from Peking, just outside of Liverpool? I hadn’t until the opening night of the Christmas panto in Poole, when my partner Charlee and I were introduced to this year’s cast. I felt that Aladdin (Ray Quinn) took a little while to get into the swing of things, but the few jokes he made to begin with went down well with the children. Audience participation notched up a level when Abanazar (Tim Flavin) appeared. He was brilliant, and the audience showed a real hatred towards him, hissing and booing in true panto style. But the star of ITV1’s Dancing On Ice, and X Factor finalist Ray Quinn soon settled in and showedoff to Poole his pitch-perfect voice and dazzling dancing experience. The star of the show for us was the legendary Don MaClean – one of Britain’s most

experienced and well-loved panto performers, who this year plays the role of Aladdin’s mother, Widow Twankey. He was a real hoot, and had the whole theatre in stitches right from the word go. From his opening scene of Gangnam Style, to his hilarious rap rendition about Indian cuisine – it’s evident that Don belongs on the stage, he’s a complete natural. The set designs and costume changes were also fantastic with a real Disney feel showing true professionalism and charisma. The senior chorus showed the makings of future stars; with the younger children who make up the two junior choruses also a delight to watch, so cute in their costumes and a brilliant asset to the wonderful cast. The highlights of the evening came towards the end of the show; not only did one brave man get on to the stage and propose to his girlfriend of 10 years; but when Ray chose four children from the audience to join him on stage and sing Old McDonald Had A Farm, it was the sweetest thing ever. You just can’t write comedy like that. Well done Lighthouse – this was a truly memorable show, which filled a whole auditorium with laughter and joy, putting a huge smile on the faces of many children.

Southern Safari By Stephen Turvil Writing poetry is harder than learning the 18-times table while being chased by a shark. Poets therefore need inspiration like toothy marine creatures need meat, and it seems that decades ago the most influential British poets found refuge in Littlehampton. That makes this seaside resort the perfect place for this poetically themed Southern Safari.

C

learly, our transport must be able to inspire poets so we have selected the Nissan Juke. This stands out from the crowd like a shark in a fish tank. Why? Because its styling resembles a beach buggy, it has an unquantifiable x-factor, and it is very fashionable. Pleasingly - unlike some stylefocussed vehicles – it is also easy to live with. It therefore has room for five people which complements the low running costs and solid build quality. Time then to grab a pen,

hop into the Juke, and set-off to Littlehampton. Leave Verwood on the B3081 to Ringwood then follow the A31 eastbound. Continue on the M27/A27 - while conjuringup a shark related poem - then follow the A259 to our inspiring destination. The Littlehampton area has been occupied since pre-historic times. As such it appears in the Domesday Book as “Hantone” which was probably a fishing community. However, during the 18th century the town became a holiday destination too. It was then – so the rumours suggest – that Lord Byron, a leading figure in the romantic movement, visited and poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley also enjoyed the sea air. I wonder if Littlehampton inspired the masterpiece ... “Why Is That Shark Licking His Lips?” But Littlehampton is more than a nice place to write poetry and hide from toothy marine creatures. As such, the East Beach Café now sits on the seafront and is one of the most memorable buildings on the coast. It is a dark-coloured steel structure with a rough, weathered, appearance that reflects its exposed position. Furthermore, The Body Shop’s World Headquarters can be found to the north of the town and Littlehampton was the first community to have a lifeboat funded by the BBC’s Blue Peter. It has also been rumoured that Ronnie Barker’s classic 80s’ sitcom, Open All Hours, was inspired by a local shop. That sums-up the destination but what about the car? The Nissan Juke has sure-footed handling, a range of refined engines, and plenty of gadgets. But that is only the opening verse. People who love this car love the styling first. They also love the image it conveys which is young, adventurous, and fun. That might sound shallow to serious poetry lovers but fashion is a key selling point for thousands of people. Bet Lord Byron would have agreed.

MP calls for ban on smoking in cars Labour MP Alex Cunningham has called for a ban on smoking in cars where children are present. Research suggests that more than 300,000 children visit doctors every year with health problems associated with passive smoking. According to Mr Cunningham, a ban has been introduced in several US states, including California, as well as in parts of Canada and Australia. Tory MP Philip Davies, who campaigns against political correctness said it should be up to parents to decide whether they smoked in cars and that there is a ‘complete lack of evidence’ about the beneficial impact of the proposal. “The proposal is excessive, intrusive and insulting to British parents who smoke - the suggestion of banning smoking in private vehicles with a minor present is yet another unwarranted intrusion on individual freedom. The government should have no role at all in regulating the private lives of adults who make decisions as adults,” said Mr Davies. What are your thoughts towards this?
