Hello readers, As 4Dorset went to print, we were gearing up for the Ferndown Pram Race. Our pram was hand built by Andy Lee whose amazing custom cars turn heads. Don’t fall victim of courier fraud

The south-west region has been targeted by shameless fraudsters, who have duped vulnerable people out of thousands of pounds in the past two months. There have been 68 reports in Dorset alone. The fraudsters first contact potential victims – who are normally elderly - by phone. Victims are encouraged to withdraw large sums of cash, which they are asked to send to London by taxi or via a courier, who will collect the money from their home. In one example, a Weymouth pensioner in his 80s received a telephone call from a man claiming to be a police officer with the Metropolitan Police. The conman told him that money had been drawn out of his account and replaced by counterfeit cash. The victim was advised to call 999 to verify the caller’s details, which he did – however it is believed he was still speaking to the fraudsters. He was then persuaded to hand over £26,000 in cash, which he gave to a courier who attended his home address. DCI Will White, of the regional organised crime unit – Zephyr, said: “The police and the banks will never ask you for banking details or PIN numbers on the phone. Similarly, they would never send a so-called ‘courier’ to collect bank cards or money.”

ongratulations to Brandon and Melanie del Rosaria on the birth of Arya Rose on 2 June 2014. Brandon and Melanie featured on the front cover of 4Dorset following their San Diego wedding last August. Their romance had flourished over 5,000 miles and resulted in Brandon moving from Las Vegas to Wimborne after his visa was approved. He now works as a freelance audio visual technician. local dance school, Mainstage, is going from strength-to-strength. “I feel very lucky to have such a fantastic creative team and staff who have been able to keep the school going while I’ve been on maternity leave,” says Melanie as she looks adoringly at her daughter and adds, “Arya is a very chilled out baby and is the spitting image of her daddy.” What a delightful update to our story ‘Love knows no bounds’ published in 4Dorset in September 2013.

Tarrant Rushton’s D-Day Memorial Service

The brother of a brave soldier who led a dangerous mission to Normandy just minutes into D-Day, joined 300 people for a commemorative service at the former Dorset airfield from which the army officer flew in a wooden Horsa glider 70 years ago. Major John Howard led the men who flew in six gliders to seize important bridges over the Orne river and the neighbouring Caen canal just 20 minutes into 6 June, 1944. Codenamed ‘Operation Coup de Main’ it was the largest and most daring maritime invasion in history. On Sunday, 8 June 2014, 82-year-old Roy Howard – the youngest brother of the late Major John Howard – attended a poignant service by the former airfield’s entrance gate, to remember the three dangerous D-Day operations flown from Tarrant Rushton. Members of the public – including relatives of veterans who served at the former top secret RAF base – took part in the gathering attended by a senior Royal Air Force officer, Wing Commander Shane Powley. After the Act of Remembrance and the laying of wreaths, reviewing officer Spencer Hare recited the ‘Kohima Epitaph’ before the Rev’d David Dennis gave the blessing. Service organizer and retired aviation engineer Dennis Hart, who lives in Corfe Mullen and worked at the base in the 1950s said: “It was a wonderful and very uplifting occasion as well as being a very moving and poignant one. “Tarrant Rushton airfield was built for the training of Halifax bomber crews in the towing of wooden troop-carrying Horsa and tank-carrying Hamilcar gliders not just for the D-Day invasion of France, but also the invasion of Arnhem in Holland during September 1944, and the crossing of the Rhine into Germany in March 1945.”

local The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Peter Adams, attended an Act of Remembrance and thanksgiving on Poole Quay on 6 June, the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. He was accompanied by veterans of the landings for prayers and the laying of a wreath at the D-Day plaque in Dolphin Quays. The group then made the short walk to the old Lifeboat Museum where they laid a wreath at the US Coastguard plaque. Around 130 people attended the events.

Remembering D-Day

wo special commemorative walks in Bournemouth proved popular as a way of marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day. More than 40 people, including the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth Dr Rodney Cooper and his wife Elaine, took part. The walks were based on the memories of respected historian John Walker, now 81, who was evacuated to the town with fellow pupils from his Portsmouth school. He described the days leading up to D-Day in 1944, and a number of walkers contributed anecdotes of their own experiences and added stories told to them by their relatives.

Strawberry prince and princess crowned Two delicious poems about strawberries written by Year 4 pupils at Oakhurst Community First School earned them the titles of Prince and Princess Strawberry at the Barrington Centre’s Strawberry Fayre on Saturday 14 June The event which included numerous art and craft stalls, bouncy castle and slide, face painting and cream teas attracted all ages and one of the highlights was the crowning of the royal pair. Prizes were presented to both the prince and princess as well as the runners up in the poetry competition, following which Daniel aged 9 was crowned by Anthony Roberts on behalf of the fayre sponsors, Goadsby Estate Agents, and Tegan aged 8 received her crown from former mayor Cllr Mrs Pauline Reynolds who said, “This is great for the children.” Anthony, who presented all the children with prizes, before sharing a cream tea with them added, “It’s an enjoyable event and good to see the children enjoying themselves.” Tegan and Daniel’s poems can be read on www.mags4dorset. co.uk

Hundreds of poor children have been able to go to school because a Verwood-based charity has received overwhelming support from residents. The Don McMath Foundation started in 2001 and is named after Verwood resident Mick McMath’s brother.

Don was a teacher in Sussex until his death in 1991 and his wife Anne set up the charity after going on holiday to The Gambia. Mick explained: “Anne started sponsoring a couple of children at a local school and friends joined in. This grew until we decided that we should open a school ourselves. “As far as we are aware, it is the first and only completely free school in The Gambia.” The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa and one of the poorest. Nearly three per cent of the 1.5 million population are refugees and only 40% of over 15 year olds can read and write. When the school opened in 2003 there was just one class of 30 children. Now with the help of parents,

Anne was awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours list for services to education in The Gambia. Mick added: “What Anne has done is remarkable and the honour is an acknowledgement of all that

she has achieved. However without the support of people in Verwood her achievements would have been far less. “It is really a Verwood charity and people should be proud of what their support means to these children.”

The new Costa Coffee store in Victoria Road, Ferndown is nearing completion, ready to open early in July. It will offer Ferndown customers the hot and cold drinks and food which have made Costa such a popular brand in the high street throughout the country. Costa was named the Nation’s Favourite Coffee Shop in January and baristas are waiting to show customers in Ferndown why Costa has won this accolade for the fourth consecutive year. The new Ferndown manager, Kirsty Samson, will be familiar to customers at Broadstone and Verwood’s Costa Coffees. Kirsty, who lives in Verwood started at the town’s branch in 2012 where her 15 years’ experience of catering meant she soon became assistant manager and then acting manager. It wasn’t surprising that she won the prestigious national Pride of Costa award for her passion for Costa. She has been working at the Broadstone Costa since February. The staff for the new Ferndown store have been fully trained at the Blandford training and development centre. Ongoing training from Kirsty, who has passed on her knowledge of how to make the best drinks and provide excellent customer service to the 10 baristas in the team, will ensure that all customers thoroughly enjoy their visit.

She said: “We are all looking forward to meeting the new customers and we’re sure many will become friends as has been the case in Verwood and Broadstone. “Our aim is to make sure that everyone gets not just the drink but the food, whether it be sandwich, panini or salad or cake, that they love. There’s lots of choice and we’re here to help.” Sherrie Hawkins has been training in Broadstone ready to move to Ferndown. She said: “I can’t wait for Ferndown to open. Verwood Business learns about becoming dementia friendly The newly elected Mayor of Verwood, Cllr Mrs Pat Morrow was guest speaker at the latest Verwood Business meeting at Plane Cuisine on 10 June. Pat used to run a big community centre in Belfast and said her term in office as mayor would be a ‘community year.’ She is currently spearheading a campaign to get Verwood established as a dementia friendly town and explained that five daytime safety zones have already been put in place. By linking with the Alzheimer’s Society, Verwood Town Council is able to offer free training to every business in the town so that staff can recognise and help anyone with dementia; for instance, if they are lost, confused or anxious. “If the community can provide help for them, they don’t have to go into a care home too early,” said Pat. She appealed to all Verwood Business members to consider training, or to encourage their staff to do so. “The Head of Nursing at Bournemouth University provides the training and it is only for 50 minutes. We need more people to come on board,” she said. Verwood currently has 300 dementia sufferers living in the town and the daytime safety zones are Cranborne and Lake Road Surgery, Verwood Surgery, Waypoints Care Home in Verwood and two Three Legged Cross care homes: Waterloo and Acorn Lodge at Oakdene. These are all safe places that will look after those with dementia for a temporary period. Pat handed out leaflets to Verwood Business members explaining how they can assist people with dementia and help extend their time in the community by simply

being supportive. “We are also working with the police to set up a protocol because the police are the first port of call when someone is found wandering around the town and can’t remember where they live.” If you have a business in Verwood and would like to help the town become dementia friendly by implementing a training programme for your staff, call 01202 820880. Ferndown councillor elected as Vice Chairman

Ferndown Central Ward councillor Steve Lugg was elected as the new vice chairman of EDDC in May. He supports the new chairman Cllr Robin Cook. Cllr Lugg has already covered events including the opening of the Memorial Garden at QE School and annual functions for East Dorset Scouts and Home Start. He said, “I want to always and foremost act as an ambassador and voice for the people of Ferndown. This new role allows me to support the chairman Robin Cook, represent East Dorset and be an advocate for Ferndown at the heart of our district. It is indeed an honour, and a privilege.” He also wants to start to change the focus of the roles of chairman and vice chair to make them more modern and relevant to residents. Cllr Lugg served in the Household Cavalry from 1980, leaving the army in 2004. His son Rhys is in the same regiment serving in London as the Sovereign’s Escort, and the photograph shows Cllr Steve Lugg and family prior to the Garden Party for the Household Cavalry on 28 May. Folky affair Though quieter than in recent years, Wimborne Folk Festival was a hugely successful family occasion with plenty of free entertainment throughout the town. Mike Carhart-Harris, Chairman of the Wimborne Minster Folk Festival committee, said: “Once again, we were fortunate to have great weather and it was wonderful to see so many people of all ages enjoying the dancing, stalls and music. Despite coinciding with the World Cup, Isle of Wight Festival and Father’s Day, the town was busy and lively all weekend, especially Saturday for the procession, with hardly any incidents. “We work closely with councils, businesses, police and others throughout the year to organise a safe, enjoyable and successful weekend. We are keen to make the festival as family-friendly as possible and have been delighted with the number of positive comments received from visitors and locals alike.”

Events are being held locally and throughout the country to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War on 4 August Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said:

“The First World War fundamentally changed the world. It also took the lives of millions of people all over the world, and left still more with disabling injuries. So it is absolutely right that we mark its centenary and that we put remembrance at the heart of this commemoration.” He explained that the aim is to help everyone in Britain, especially the young, understand and appreciate what happened, and the ultimate sacrifice that so many made during that time. Three national commemorative events are taking place on 4 August - the 100th anniversary of the date war was declared - in Glasgow, at Westminster Abbey and at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission St Symphorien Military Cemetery in Mons, Belgium.

Ferndown British Legion will be holding a remembrance parade and service of commemoration and wreath laying at St Mary’s Church at 3pm on 3 August. On 4 August, at 11am the mayor will place a wreath in the Garden of Remembrance on Church Road and unveil a sundial in the garden. The service will include the first part of the lighting of the one million candles, aimed at families and children The final part of the tribute for adults will take place in the Garden of Remembrance at 11pm.

Christchurch schools are taking part in a commemorative project to engage children and young people and encourage family members, friends and neighbours to recall their experiences in the Great War. The outstanding pieces will be put together as a Christchurch Great Wars Commemorative Museum Exhibition during the Christchurch Tribute to the Fallen on Sunday 20 July on Christchurch Quay, and then in local exhibition centres such as Highcliffe Castle, Civic Offices, Christchurch Library, Christchurch Priory, Red House Museum and the Regent Centre.

The Branch and Band of the Royal British Legion Christchurch in conjunction with Christchurch Council, are presenting a Military Tattoo on Christchurch Quay on Sunday 20 July from 12 noon to 6pm. There will be static performances, marching displays and vehicle displays in and around the arena. This will culminate in a massed band Drumhead Service.

The official Wimborne Town remembrance of the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War will be a simple ceremony at the War Memorial on the Minster Green. At 11am on 4 August, the mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of all the people of the town and veterans of the armed forces will also be taking part.

Exactly 100 years later the Royal British Legion is inviting everyone in the UK to join together in a national moment of reflection by turning off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. The aim is to light one million candles to remember each and every one of those servicemen and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars.

Bournemouth will be taking part in the lights out initiative on 4 August. Lights across the town will be turned off and the mayor will be leading a candlelit ceremony at the War Memorial in the Gardens. There will also be a civic service ceremony at the Waterfront Space Pier Approach on 4 August. The last Children’s Parade before the outbreak of war will be restaged on 24 July and children are making thousands of poppies as part of the Poppy Fields project.

Poppy Fields - Poole

Thousands of poppies will be made out of paper and wire by schools and the public in Poole as part of the Poppy Fields project to mark the centenary. Valise Noire Storytelling Theatre has received £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project It will enable Poole to come together with the wider community across Dorset to preserve the memories and heritage of those who lived through the First World War, by inviting local people to collect and contribute photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, letters and photos of keepsakes, as well as family tales passed down to help build a clear picture of what life was really like. Women and children who worked in the war will also be acknowledged, with Valise Noire investigating the connection between arms manufacturing at the Cordite Factory in Poole - the soldiers using the arms and the nurses who nursed the consequences of their use. There will be an exhibition at Lighthouse, Poole in October, featuring all the poppies and site specific performances seen through the eyes of two First World War nurses, performed by Valise Noire’s Michele O’Brien and Hazel Evans, will take place in various locations.

ot many 90-year-olds want to learn to use an iPad, let alone use one, but for one Ferndown resident, his online expertise paid dividends. Mr William Revill, the fifth winner of £1,000 in the latest mags4dorset CashUnity prize draw, entered after taking his mobility scooter to Freedom Mobility Shop in the town for repair work. Business owner Janet Howard handed him his receipt, along with a CashUnity entry card and advised him to send it to mags4dorset. William’s wife, Jean, aged 82, takes up the story, “We took the card home intending to post it off, but didn’t get round to doing so. The iPad was William’s birthday present and he uses it a lot. Luckily, he entered online.” After submitting the entry, the couple promptly forgot about it, so when William received the magical phone call to say he’d won, he was so emotional, he nearly lost his voice. The windfall is something that will benefit the couple considerably. Born in Leeds, William has lived in Ferndown since 1946. He married Jean in 1953 after she qualified as a nurse in Southampton and they have three children, David, Graeme and Jacqui. “We met at the RAF club in Boscombe,” said William who served in India in 1944-46. When asked how they will be spending the money, William said, “I’d like to start by buying a printer for the iPad,” and Jean added, “And I need help in the garden.” The Revills are certainly revelling in their win and we wish them every success with their purchases, which they said, in the true spirit of CashUnity, will be local ones.

Royal Garden Party crowns work of East Dorset charity When Susan Sutherland, Project Manager of the Turbary Resource Centre in Ferndown received an invitation to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace her first thought was, ‘what shall I wear?’ followed by ‘who shall I take with me?’ She was invited by the former Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, Mrs Valerie Pitt-Rivers in recognition of

the service to the local community provided by Susan and her team. Mrs Pitt-Rivers has long been familiar with the work of the Bus Stop Club, a charity based at the Turbary Resource Centre, where Susan organises many activities. Susan said, “We had a lovely tea with sandwiches, cakes and tubs of strawberry ice cream. We were not

chosen to speak to any of the Royals, which was a bit of a relief, but we enjoyed being there and meeting other people who are also involved in their local communities.”

Local photographer Kay Browning spotted the Red Arrows on a flying visit to Bournemouth Airport last month. Here is a picture of the newly decorated tail fin, designed to commemorate their 50th display season. In the shape of a Union flag, the striking design reflects the Best of British and emphasizes the Red Arrows’ role as ambassadors for the UK and as the public face of the Royal Air Force. You can see the Red Arrows on 28 August-31 August at the Bournemouth Air Festival.

Dragging huge tractor tyres along the promenade from Sandbanks to Boscombe or speed marching with weights along the coastal path isn’t everyone’s idea of training, but for Daryl Price and his Marathon Charity Truck Pull team, it worked. They went on to pull a 2.5 tonne truck 27 miles for charity starting at Wareham Quay to Corfe Castle, Sandbanks via Studland ferry, through Lilliput and on to Poole, Hamworthy, Lytchett Minster and back to Wareham via Sandford. 27 miles in 11.5 hours. A punishing physical challenge. The Truck Pullers raised almost £600 on the day from motorists and well-wishers. Added to their online fundraising and money raised during their training sessions, the Marathon Charity Truck Pull raised over £1,500 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. Garry Sobers – batting far from average

Cricket players enjoying hearing the sound of leather on willow again this summer have the chance to spend ‘An Evening with Cricket Legend Sir Garfield Sobers’. He was undoubtedly the greatest cricket player of his era (1952 - 1974) and will be sharing anecdotes. He was a hugely talented all round player who captained The West Indies and still holds the world record of six sixes in an over. After his retirement in 1975, he was knighted by the Queen in recognition of his outstanding contribution to international cricket and declared a National Hero in Barbados. There are two tickets to be won to see the cricket legend on Tuesday 12 August at 7.30pm.

He broke the rules to get her out and she still has no idea who he was. She has always talked about her experiences and her book ‘The Tin Ring’ was published in 1996. She has told her story all over the world but she says that the country where people want to know most of all is Germany. She said: “I do worry that people might forget but by speaking out I hope my memories should prevent anything like this happening again. “Every day is a gift, value it as a gift and hope for another. I have had a bonus of 75 years.” A victim she is not – an inspiration she is. And she still has Arno’s tin ring.

Bowled over by England captain Children from Parley First School had the wonderful opportunity of practising their cricket skills with Charlotte Edwards, the captain of the England Ladies team at Wimborne Cricket Club. Year 3 and 4 pupils batted and fielded with Charlotte, and had fun playing Kwik Cricket. tandard versions cost relatively little and represent easy to live with, nononsense, transport that excels in town. Renaultsport versions, in contrast, better suit thrill seekers who want something faster and more engaging. The latter – in top-spec Lux EDC form – is very powerful for a supermini and this is reflected in the price tag, fuel consumption, carbon emissions and insurance group. Fair enough for a car that produces 200bhp and hits 62mph in 6.7 seconds. In contrast, the Clio GT-Line 120 – which is more thrilling than the standard range - shares many of its highpowered sibling’s strengths but is cheaper to purchase and run. Similarities to its powerful bedfellow include the sporty styling that includes: 17-inch alloy wheels, twinchrome exhaust pipes, a rear diffuser, rear spoiler, body-coloured handles, special badging, tinted windows and prominent colours. The interior is memorable too. Sportfocused highlights include: special

upholstery, GT kick plates and a dark leather steering wheel that looks ‘just right’. The Renaultsport Clio GT-Line 120 is powered by a 1.2-litre, 120bhp, petrol engine that propels it to 62mph in 9.9 seconds. Whereas that is modest compared to the more powerful trim, this hot-hatch feels faster than its time suggests; partly because it has a pleasing amount of torque for picking-up speed throughout the rev-range. Furthermore, modest power ensures that it averages a highly respectable 54.3mpg and emissions are only 120g/km. The latter equates to Road Tax Band C so it can be taxed for free in year one. The subsequent cost is £30 (current rates). The handling is excellent too. As such, the stiffened chassis corners beautifully and feedback through the steering inspires confidence. Also, the six-speed, dualclutch, automatic transmission responds quickly and enables the motorist to cruise in full-auto mode or select the cogs manually via paddles behind the steering wheel. And there is more. Switching from ‘normal’ to ‘sport’ mode stiffens the steering and tweaks the transmission/ throttle response for an even more engaging feel. Standard equipment includes sat-nav, cruise control and hill-start assist. All from £17,395. Like Goldilocks’ porridge, that is ‘just right’.
