Hello everyone, Do you like the front cover? It’s a bit different to usual. When John Hanrhan, the manager of Heatherlands Community Centre sent the image to me, I thought it was stunning. When I discovered that a group of 25 children had helped create it during an Arts Week graffiti project, led by artist John Sheridan, I was even more impressed. What a fitting tribute to capture a moment 100 years ago in modern art with a group of young children. This is the type of creativity that will not only have opened their minds and allowed them to bloom, but will have brought home the poignancy of war. I’m sure you will join with me in congratulating everyone involved. The artwork can be seen on the back wall of Heatherlands along with other outstanding artwork, which has helped educate all those who took part in the project. As far as the front cover goes, Louis heightened the ‘brickwork’ slightly to fit our cover shape and added the graffiti type headings. We wondered if this was the right thing to do, but on seeing the result, there was no going back. Do let us know what you think. There is much to read inside this issue with an education and a wedding feature, another spot the shop competition (back by popular demand), details of our latest CashUnity winner and lots of local news. Enjoy.

Sun shines on parish councils West Parley and Hurn Parish Councils are celebrating a £60,000 windfall. They have each received £30,000 from Eco Sustainable Solutions. The donations follow planning approval for new solar farms covering 291 acres on land bordering Eco’s Parley site. Work is now underway on the schemes which will
4
eventually provide low carbon ‘green’ electrical power for about 14,000 homes. Trelawney Dampney, Eco’s MD, said: “I feel strongly that businesses such as ourselves have a wider responsibility than just to make money.
4Dorset September 2014
“We work closely with local residents and elected representatives and, while we do not always see eye to eye on every issue, we value the importance of local democracy in action. “There are no strings attached to these donations. All we ask is that the money is spent on projects and initiatives which will benefit as many people as possible in the local community.” John Cullen, chairman of West Parley council, said the donation was a “very generous” sum, explaining
that a number of projects will receive funding. “These include improvements in the public car park by the country club with new drainage, resurfacing where needed and new lights. “We’re also putting fencing round the new children’s play area, which will keep it dog free, and hope to give more money to community groups. This will be on top of the amounts already allocated by the parish council to local organisations,” he said.
Cllr Margaret Phipps, chairman at Hurn, said the Eco cheque was the largest single donation received by the council. “We’re very pleased to receive this money and very grateful to Trelawney and Eco Sustainable Solutions. It will make a big difference. “We have not yet allocated the money to anything specific. It’s likely we will ask residents via our newsletter whether they have any local schemes we should consider supporting,” added Cllr Phipps. Trelawney Dampney (centre) presents the £30,000 cheques to John Cullen and Margaret Phipps.

Lights Out For
WWI centenary
First World War centenary commemorations in Ferndown, included a parade and service at St Mary’s Church with a Lights Out candlelit vigil at Ferndown Garden of Remembrance on 4 August, the anniversary of the start of the conflict. With just one candle and the poppy illuminated on the memorial stone from 10pm, a silence was held and the names of those who died in the war read out. At 11pm additional candles were lit along with those left by families earlier in the day. In Christchurch, the mayor and Legion representatives gathered at Saxon Square for Lights Out. From 10pm, music from WW1 was played by the Christchurch and District Band. The poem ‘Lights Out’ written by Edward Thomas was also read. Following a minute’s silence, the lights in Saxon Square dimmed leaving one candle lit in the window of the Mayor’s Parlour overlooking the Square.
Ferndown remembers
Discover Ferndown’s WW1 heroes
A display recording the stories of the First World War heroes named on Ferndown’s Roll of Honour is on show in the town’s library. As part of the WWI commemorations, Ian Dale of Ferndown Royal British Legion has carried out five months of research into their personal backgrounds, military records and the regiment and unit in which they served. The information has been mounted as a mobile display and is now available to local schools, churches, care-homes, community and youth groups and anyone wanting to know more about those who fell in the conflict. It is hoped to publish the project as a lasting legacy to those who gave their lives. Contact Ian Dale via The Royal British Legion on 01202 877706 or Branch@rblferndown.org

Brave Becca’s achievement
Becca and her proud dad
The bravery and determination of a Ferndown student to succeed despite personal tragedy has been rewarded with three A*s at A level
D
espite the devastating news that her mother had cancer with only a matter of months to live, 17-year-old Becca Powis stuck to her studies at Ferndown Upper School, even drawing inspiration from her mum’s life. Denise Powis discovered she had cancer at the end of September last year just as Becca started her A2 courses and the family was warned she would deteriorate rapidly. Becca explained: “She became so ill very quickly and I wanted to spend as much time as possible with her. The school was amazing and did all they could to let me work at home. They even lent me a sewing machine. “I was doing a project on the theme of beauty and I based this around my mum so I could be with her. She used to be a model and I was able to paint pictures of her when she was younger. I also used photographs and drawings. She was also a very creative person and used to sing in bands. “The family all got angry because of what was happening to her but she never did,” Becca added. Becca completed the project before Denise died at the end of December and against all odds achieved full marks from the examiners.

She went to pick up her A level results with her dad Barry, and said the results of A* in art, textiles and photography were a real shock. Modestly, she added: “I never expected to do so well and am so happy with my results.” Her results were amongst the highest in the country, with 100% in textiles and photography and 97% in art. Becca, who was 18 on 25 August, is carrying on at FUS and taking an arts’ foundation course but her results have changed her plans for the future. “I had been thinking about an apprenticeship but I’m looking at university now. I’ve always known I’d end up doing something with art and my mum supported me in that.” FUS Heateacher Alex Wills said: “Becca has done exceptionally well in the face of great sadness and adversity this year to achieve straight A*s at A-level. She is a very talented and modest young lady who is a great credit to her family and has a very bright future ahead of her. All of us at Ferndown Upper School are really proud of this incredible achievement.”

Top class
Hayley
Ferndown Golf Club’s Hayley Davis put on a top class show at the beginning of August to leave the field standing and win the English women’s stroke play championship by an impressive six shots at Tandridge in Surrey.
The
21-year-old international was applauded off the 18th green by the large crowd of spectators who gathered to watch her win her third English title with a 72-hole total of four-under par. It is her first victory in 18 months and she remarked: “I haven’t won anything for a while and it was really nice to do it with my mum, nan and granddad watching.” She adds this to the English women’s amateur championship, which she
won at her first attempt as a 17-year-old, and the English girls’ title. “It’s lovely to have all three,” she added. Hayley received an additional prize for her triumph when she was made an honorary member of Tandridge Golf Club at the prize presentation. “That was a complete surprise and really exciting,” she said. Hayley also won the U21 and U23 trophies, while the U18 trophy went to 14-yearold Bel Wardle of Prestbury, Cheshire.
Congratulations to Suzanne Jenkins from Broadstone who has won the Haskins £80 gift card, and the £50 mags4dorset meat voucher to spend at Griffs Butchers of Broadstone, after entering the ‘dream BBQ’ competition in the July issue of 4Dorset. Suzanne is a PA at Poole Hospital and said, “I am delighted to have won. I plan to use the vouchers to purchase a gas powered BBQ for use in my beach hut.” mags4dorset Director Ben Pulford and Haskins Garden Centre’s Head of Retail Operations Dean Ridley presented the prizes. Well done Suzanne, enjoy your BBQ overlooking the sea.

Leopard spotted as WW1 is Tanning commemorated in graffiti and a Hollywood smile
French Market brings Ferndown to life All things continental were sold from colourful market stalls along Victoria Road in Ferndown between 25-27 July. The market arrived after it was cancelled at short notice by Ringwood Town Council. James Edgar, President of Ferndown Chamber of Commerce who helped accommodate the French Market with Ferndown Town Council said, “It was well attended considering the short period of time we had to promote it. It did look busy with plenty of people around, but they didn’t spend enough and this market is used to visiting larger towns such as Christchurch where the place is heaving with visitors.” James added, “The chamber probably wouldn’t look at holding another French market until next year.”
A ferocious leopard takes pride of place at Heatherlands Community Centre in Ferndown following East Dorset District Council’s Summer Art Week and Graffiti Project for children under 16. Every day, over 100 participants enjoyed a range of art projects including graffiti-ing the back wall of the centre. In commemoration of World War 1, one of the images depicts a poignant image of a soldier standing at the grave of a fellow Tommy. (front cover photograph)

Get planning for next year’s
garden
The smell of autumn is in the air so it’s time to sit down in a quiet corner of your garden, patio or outside space and reflect on the things that have worked, and haven’t worked, this year. September is a great planning and planting month so start ordering those new roses, shrubs and other plants that you need. Autumn is really the best time for planting; the soil is still warm and the seasonal rains will get plants established before winter sets in.
I
s also a time when some border plants come into their own, just as the rest of the summer flower plants are past their prime. A classic late flowerer is the pretty Japanese anemone, a favourite with gardeners and with Gardener’s World photographer, Jason Ingram. “Japanese anemones are extremely photogenic flowers which brighten up the garden in late-summer or autumn, producing simple saucers in white and various shades of pink,” he says. “They are a ‘must have’ border
plant for the autumn and put on a fantastic display in the period where most gardens are starting to look tired and over. I love that their beauty adds a whole new dimension of colour and texture to my garden.” Japanese anemone, also known as the windflower, can be grown in sun or shade and are good for lighting up a dark corner of the garden. They like well drained
soil and often spread by themselves, creating new clumps that can be lifted and planted elsewhere. From a garden housekeeping perspective, now is the perfect time to move or plant evergreen and coniferous plants. It’s also the best time to lay a new turf lawn. It will establish very quickly, but do keep an eye on it during the winter. You can also sow grass seed now for a new lawn or patch up an existing one. Also, don’t forget to plant indoor hyacinth bulbs in pots now if you want a display for the end of year celebrations.

Courageous wedding anniversary run
A mother of the bride who was admitted to hospital with a rare, life-threatening condition and almost died before her daughter’s wedding day has, a year later, completed a 5k run for charity.
F
rances Wilkins from West Moors was diagnosed with Churg-Strauss syndrome in the summer 2013. She was so seriously ill, the family got together to discuss whether the wedding should be postponed. “We decided it should go ahead. We felt it was what Frances would have wanted,” said her husband David. When Elizabeth’s wedding day arrived, she was reassured that her mother would be watching the
occasion live on an iPad from her hospital bed. What she didn’t know, was that the hospital staff at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital were preparing Frances for a very special journey. Although severely weakened, she was improving after treatment, and at the 11th hour, a member of the nursing staff personally escorted Frances to the church in time to see her daughter walk down the aisle. It was a moment the family will never forget.

When I’d walked down the aisle, I just ran over and gave her a big hug, it was really emotional.” That was on 2 August 2013. At the time, Frances was wheelchair bound and has had to learn to walk again. With courage and determination, she completed the 5k run in Poole Park last month and raised nearly £3,000 for the charity Headway. The BBC was there to record her challenge and Frances said, “I was very nearly the last to finish, but I got round.” It was the thought of the financial boost to Headway and the knowledge that she was raising awareness of Churg-Strauss Syndrome that drove her on. “The earlier it is Frances in 2013 diagnosed and treated the greater the arriving at the wedding chance of survival and hopefully the less life changing it will be,” she said. What made the run even more special was that it coincided with Elizabeth’s first wedding anniversary.

Lacey Lightfoot goes to…..
etition
The mags4dorset writing competition is very different this year. Meet Lacey Lightfoot
Single, white, female. Age 23. Height 5’8”. Hair long and black. Build: curvy – weight conscious. Last job: buyer for a multi-national chain store. Love life: no current boyfriend, not ready to settle down.

Luxury break for CashUnity winner Christchurch man Douglas Blunden couldn’t have won CashUnity at a better time. His wife, Betty, had suffered a fall and was confined to the home when the phone call came from mags4dorset to say he was £1,000 better off for shopping locally. After receiving his cheque, he knew exactly what he was going to do with the money and said, “When Betty’s recovered, I will treat her to a few days of luxury in a posh hotel.” The couple have been married for 61 years. Douglas entered CashUnity at Think Print in Christchurch and was the lucky July winner drawn from over 550 entries by Ferndown town clerk, Vanessa Ricketts. Think Print’s owner Alyson Miles has embraced the shop local initiative. She said, “CashUnity is going great for us and everyone is enthusiastic about doing it. We are thrilled we’ve got a Christchurch winner.” She was presented with a bottle of Champagne by
Ben Pulford, the director of mags4dorset who said, “CashUnity is all about participation. Think Print is doing a good job at promoting the scheme and from now on we will be handing out a few more bottles of bubbly to the participating traders who give out the winning entries up to Christmas as an extra ‘thank you’.” Anyone over 18 can enter the free prize draw, see opposite for more information and details of the participating traders. Since the start of the initiative in January 2014, mags4dorset has given away a staggering £7,000 to local people as a thank you for supporting their local CashUnity shops.
To become part of this high profile shop local initiative visit www.cashunity.co.uk or call Mark Beechey on 01202 870270.

Over-particular about her own personal appearance, Lacey tolerates Skip and his tattered looks (he’s a guitarist in a band and is waiting for his big break) because he is kind and a good listener. Lacey aims to become chief buyer by the time she is 30, until… her great aunt Sophia dies leaving her £100,000. Without hesitation, Lacey throws in the towel to become a freelance travel writer/reporter. Use the present or recent past tense (5 years). Will she be kidnapped and held hostage in Columbia, discover an unknown species in Borneo, meet gorillas in Africa or be chilling on a beach in Wales and witness sheep rustling? Lacey falls in and out of love easily, so will her Mr Right always turn out to be Mr Wrong? You get the idea. Our prize structure is different to usual. An ebook anthology will be compiled called ‘Lacey Lightfoot’s Awesome Adventures’. All entrants will permit their story to be used in this way. There is no entry fee, but entrants must fill in an entry form (photocopies accepted) and send in 2 first class stamps (do not stick them to anything) with their entry. Double line spacing. udyard Kipling is one of the most intriguing and controversial of all our great writers. From idyllic memories of India to the horrors of the First World War and his moving stories and poems, he led an extraordinary life. He was the great spokesman for his age, a time dominated by a
many of today’s stars such as Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose. He won the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in 1969 and the next year held both the British and US open titles at the same time. He was the most successful Ryder Cup captain ever. He will be coming to the Regent Centre on Thursday 9 October at 7.30pm to talk about his extraordinary golfing career and maybe even his recent appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. The evening will be hosted by snooker’s Willie sense of Imperial destiny, which was soon to be destroyed forever. Now 150 years after his birth ‘Just So’ explores the many different worlds inhabited by this great storyteller and poet, through his autobiographical writings, stories and verse,

BMW 420i SE Gran Coupé
The BMW 420i SE Gran Coupé has more charisma than the world’s most successful smooth operator.
But who is this newcomer?
I
t is, in fact, a fourdoor coupé with sharp styling important in its fashion conscious sector. Where it excels over some traditional coupés is that it is practical. It seats four people in comfort and cargo capacity is 480 litres. The latter is comparable to a family class estate, so plenty of room for designer luggage. Furthermore, the rear seats split 40/20/40 to accommodate longer items. Good thing too - our smooth operator never leaves home without a personalised set of skis. Once en route, this rear-wheel-drive coupé feels extremely secure and refined. The handling is a joy. The ride is compliant too. Power comes courtesy of a 2-litre, 184hp, petrol engine, teamed to six-speed manual transmission. Both are smoother than our
smooth operator’s best chat-up line. The result is 0–60 in slightly more than seven seconds, so this 4-door coupé is fairly fast. It averages a commendable 44mpg too. The BMW 420i SE Gran Coupé has a high specification to help with that sophisticated look. Highlights include heated leather seats, front and rear parking sensors, run-flat tyres on 17-inch wheels, two-zone climate control and automatic headlights/wipers. Not bad for an entry-level trim. But there is more. An optional headup display projects the coupé’s speed onto its windscreen in the line of sight (driver only). It confirms sat-nav instructions too. Its purpose is to ensure the driver keeps their eyes on the road, rather than flicking to the dashboard for a
speedometer, etc. Some people – mostly those that have not tested such a concept - might be concerned that it is distracting. But consider this. Windscreen wipers move through a motorist’s field of vision and over the vast majority of the glass – but he/she looks through them without a problem. Equally, a driver does not fixate on rain – but looks through it. The same applies to the head-up display. It is simply there when required without being intrusive. Our smooth operator and his numerous friends adore it.
