What a pleasure this issue has been, particularly as I had help from uni student, James Lewer and English Literature graduate, Dan Flynn. Both came to me as work experience students when they were younger and they’ve both contributed immensley to the magazine. 4Dorset is bigger this month due to a brilliant effort by our account managers. ‘Ferndown Steps Up’ is the largest town feature ever in 4Dorset or in Town & Village before that. Surely this tells us something about Ferndown, so do visit and enjoy what it offers. On the downside, my husband’s Marin bicycle disappeared after it had been accidentally left at West Moors Skatepark. It was in good condition and should have been handed to the police. Instead it was vandalised. The twisted frame was found by a Ferndown Town Council groundsman and appeared outside our office, (a cruel coincidence). It seems bicycle destruction is the latest sport – there are another two at the council offices – so do look after your bikes. Enjoy reading about Melanie and Brandon’s wedding and the many other articles and features within the mag.

Doctors go full cycle for charity

4

4Dorset September 2013

www.mags4dorset.co.uk

Two consultants from the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals have raised thousands of pounds for the hospital charity by completing an epic cycle challenge from Land’s End to John O’Groats, covering 990 miles in 14 days. Dr Neil Hopkinson, and Dr Sean Weaver, have raised almost £7,000, with donations still coming in. The money raised will be split between the Trust’s Rheumatology and Endoscopy Departments. Dr Weaver described the trip as a “great success”. Dr Hopkinson was equally enthusiastic: The support we received along the way was fantastic. One lady we met suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and when she found out I was raising money for rheumatology, she made a donation online. Another man up in Glen Coe just emptied his pockets and gave us all of his change.” An extra £400 was raised by Dr Hopkinson for shaving his legs – as is commonly done by enthusiastic, as well as professional, ‘roadies’. You can still support Dr Hopkinson and Dr Weaver by donating online at www. virginmoneygiving.com/team/ weaver_hopkinson or through the hospital charity website: www. bournemouthhospitalcharity. org. Alternatively you can make a cheque payable to ‘Bournemouth Hospital Charity – John O’Groats’.

Time TICs away in Wimborne A petition has been launched to save the threatened Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Wimborne. This follows the shock announcement by the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership that it will be streamlining its tourism department. The Partnership says that the way visitors look for information is changing to more online sources and this has influenced their decisions. Proposals are to enhance the online presence and absorb services run by the tourism departments at both councils (Christchurch and Wimborne) either inhouse or by finding outside organisations to undertake the work. In Christchurch, the tourist information office will be integrated with the Regent Centre next door and the service will be provided by volunteers. In Wimborne, the council says it is still seeking a third party to administer the tourist

information and if nowhere suitable can be found, the TIC will close in November 2013. If you want to sign a petition to save Wimborne TIC go to Square Records in the High Street or Rumours Hairdressing in Crown Mead. Anthony Oliver MBE on 01202 888703 can also provide additional forms. Final decisions concerning proposals for the information centres will go before councillors in this month.

Revenues and benefits –

changes afoot Borough of Poole and the three authorities within the Stour Valley Partnership, Christchurch Borough Council, East Dorset District Council and North Dorset District Council, are exploring the possibility of working together to deliver revenues and benefits services.

Head of Finance for Christchurch and East Dorset Councils, Ian Milner said: “By working in partnership, the Stour Valley Partnership and Borough of Poole will be in a position to create a strong and resilient revenues and benefits service, keeping jobs local and maintaining an efficient

Petitioners

and accessible local service for our customers.” If approved, the Stour Valley and Poole Partnership would be implemented in phases, starting with a shared management structure while maintaining current operational services from April 2014. The second phase, which would look at bringing together the operational services for Borough of Poole and the Stour Valley Partnership, is expected to be reviewed by the councils in 2014.

In addition, there was a sword fencing display by Sway Fencing Club, who showed off their skills whilst sitting in wheelchairs. Further bravery was shown by 10-year-old Ethan Tanner, who raised £330 by agreeing to have his wavy locks shaved off, ‘well done’ young man. Sincere thanks to all who supported us in raising a magnificent sum in excess of £3,600. We are so lucky to have wonderful gardens at our Centre and when not being used for fundraising events, are tranquil additions to our facilities. Looked after by two of our members, Laura and Martin, the large lawn is surrounded by beautiful shrubbery, sweet smelling herbaceous borders and UNSUNG HEROES: shade-giving trees. Raised planters Laura and Martin Webber on the plant stall have been installed in order to encourage wheelchair gardeners to participate, whilst hanging baskets adorn the external walls of the building. A large patio area, complete with many ‘in memory of’ benches and tables complete the relaxing vista. Last week I attended Crane Valley Golf Club, Verwood, where the men’s captain had arranged for members and guests to take part in his ‘Charity Day’. With our branch being the recipients of all money raised on the day, imagine my delight on learning that their generosity had raised in excess of £2,500. Another golf day, this time organised by our own MS branch, is to take place at the same venue on the 20 September. Why not contact Crane Valley or us for further details? Bye for now

Opening of the Ford Lane BMX track Ferndown Town Council was pleased to officially open the new BMX track at Ford Lane on Sunday 11 August. The new track within the Heatherlands Recreation Ground is suitable for all ages and abilities. It was developed following a consultation exercise with young people from the area. Financial contributions were received from Synergy Housing Association and the Urban Heaths Partnership (UHP). Jade North, Senior Area Warden from the UHP said, “For a long time it has been recognised that Ferndown needs an area designed for cyclists. Dirt jumping has become a popular sport and encourages health, fitness and development of new skills. In this region many people of all ages have started to develop an interest and the facilities have not existed until now. “By creating this new track not only will it give people a place to develop their talent but it will also help to protect our local nature reserves such as Ferndown, Parley and Poor Common, which have all been subject to illegal building of dirt jumps in past years.” The photograph shows some of the users of the new track with the Mayor of Ferndown, Councillor John Lewis, other civic dignitaries and local residents who attended the formal opening.

New skate bowl d planne Report by James Lewer

Ferndown Town Council is preparing to invest in a new facility for young people

D

eputy Mayor Cllr Steven Lugg is championing a project to build a skate bowl next to the existing skatepark in Cherry Grove. He is confident it will be beneficial, claiming that skate sports have the “biggest participation for 10-25 year olds in this country.” He says Ferndown skatepark can have up to 200 users a day. Olympic legacy has become a popular term, and Cllr Lugg says, “The Olympics has re-engaged people with sport again, and I think this is the way to continue it. There are a lot of youngsters who want to do this sport, and it’s recognised by Sport England.” Cllr Lugg is positive about the use of space and, as a consequence, the amount of people who will use the facility. He explained that the area of scrubbed trees to the side of the existing skatepark would be utilised, effectively doubling its size. He has been delighted by the reaction from youngsters to the project and said, “A group of them turned up to the committee meetings as a result of the plan. It seems this has had a knock-on effect, with political engagement evident from a new generation, when there are issues they can relate to.”

Leading Print and Copy Centre Xerocad celebrates 10 years trading in Ferndown Town Centre “We are all aware of the impact of the internet but unlike buying online, you can visit Xerocad, speak to the team face-to-face and go through your ideas. It helps to get a more accurate idea of what you’re looking for and we know from experience that in many areas we can match and often beat online prices,” says the company’s director Stuart Fleetham. Perhaps this approach explains why Xerocad has so many repeat customers. Feedback proves that Xerocad regularly exceeds customers’ expectations by offering bespoke, quality solutions for business stationery, order of service, photographic reproduction, canvas prints and posters and banners to name just a few of the products and services provided. At a time when our High Streets have seen so many businesses fail, Xerocad is proud of the solid foundation it has established as a result of offering customers excellent service, value for money and reliability. Despite an extremely hesitant market, Xerocad, without doubt, has taken a positive approach in order to focus both on the needs of customers and product quality. This has resulted in the strong market presence that the company has established in Ferndown and the surrounding area since 2003. Continually investing in the latest technology means Xerocad can guarantee a fast turnaround because most of the services provided are produced in-house.

The management team is always looking to introduce new products to expand the range of services offered. For example, as a result of customer feedback; the team is currently investigating a self-service digital photo printing service to compete with online photo printing.

For details of all of the services provided by Xerocad and any special offers and promotions that are running why not check out www.xerocad.co.uk or www.facebook.com/XerocadLtd

Dorset’s best chip shop is in Ferndown! Salt and Vinegar has been named as one of the best fish and chip shops in the country

O

ut of 300 shops competing for Fry Magazine.com’s first-ever 50 best fish and chip shops, owner Karen Milner heard her shop had made the list. “We were the only Dorset chip

shop to do so,” said Karen. “A mystery shopper rated us on service and food months ago. “We had no idea anyone had visited until we received a letter in the post telling us we’d scored 99 per cent, which was amazing.” The lost mark was because the mystery customer wasn’t asked if they wanted anything extra, like a can of drink or mushy peas. “We are happy to miss out for that,” says Karen. “We don’t want to push our customers into buying things they don’t want.” Only nine shops in the top 50 scored 100 per cent. The minimum

requirement to make the list was 96 per cent. What’s even more exciting is that this isn’t Salt and Vinegar’s first accolade. The shop celebrated the title of best newcomer at the National Fish and Chip Awards in January. Salt and Vinegar can be found in Ringwood Road, Ferndown.

Report by James Lewer

ne of Doctor Who’s arch enemies invaded Heatherlands Community Centre during a week of arty activities in the school holidays. Artists worked alongside parents and community leaders to open up children’s minds into an exciting new world through a week of space-themed activities, including the creation of a life-sized Dalek and some alien masks. Over 500 children of all ages from the estate participated in a variety of arts activities led by top artists from across Dorset. This included animation, filmmaking, mural painting, jelly fish making and of course, Dalek building. Community group leader John Hanrahan said: “We’ve had lots of support. Sherrell and Minnie have been instrumental in the organisation of events. This year Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s came on board, they provided the food for some of the activities, and helped encourage healthy eating.” John believes that these projects should be given recognition for positive changes happening in the Heatherlands community.

Barrie and Shelia say that over the 11 years they have lived in Mayfield Close, they have worked on the garden most weekends. “We do get people saying they admire the garden, especially the water feature based on two wrought iron well wheels, that I reproduced as a project and which won gold at the Hampton Court flower show in 2002, “ said Barrie. “This is the first year that we decided to enter and we are delighted with the result.” The presentation evening for all the prize-winners will be at Haskins Restaurant on Thursday 26 September from 6.30pm. All welcome.

4Dorset September 2013

A retired London hair stylist won £50 worth of Haskins vouchers after entering the mags4dorset competition in the June issue of 4Dorset. Jean Jones, from Ferndown, said she was amazed to hear that she had won. Haskins Garden Centre’s Customer Services Manager Joolz Walford presented Jean, and her partner and ‘head gardener’ David Gill, with the vouchers which the couple immediately spent on a selection of plants. “I rarely ever enter competitions so it was a surprise to hear that we had won,” said Jean. “You always think it will be someone else – it’s fantastic and we will enter more competitions in the future.”

Love knows no bounds by Janine Pulford

There is a saying that ‘true love knows no reason, no boundaries, no distance.’

B

randon del Rosario and Melanie Hammond were to discover this when they fell in love in the summer of 2011. Living more than 5,000 miles apart, their trans-Atlantic relationship flourished and when 26-year-old Brandon proposed, Melanie rose to the challenge of organizing a wedding in the States with great enthusiasm. Her fiancé lived ‘across the pond’ in Las Vegas, whilst Melanie had a home and business in Wimborne. To further complicate matters, the wedding was going to be in or near San Diego, California – where Brandon’s parents lived. Melanie and Brandon first met whilst working on a Disney cruise. She was a dancer and he, a technician. Though they had neighbouring cabins, they barely exchanged more than a few words in over 10 months. Two years later in 2011, Melanie was holidaying in Las Vegas. She knew Brandon lived there and got in touch. They met for a drink on 1 August and found they had lots to talk about. He was in a band and invited her along to a gig. “It wasn’t until I was dressing up to go and see the band that I realized there was something more to our relationship than friendship,” said Melanie, and she put it down to a holiday romance. But when she got home, she couldn’t put Brandon out of her mind. “We talked every day,” she said. The relationship grew and a few months later she flew back to see him. “That visit concreted everything,” she said. Then Brandon came to England for Christmas and in a truly romantic style, he asked for her hand in marriage on Christmas Day and proposed to Melanie in the New Forest on Boxing Day.

From then on, the wedding planning began. There were to be 22 guests from England and 40 from the USA – so flights had to be considered on top of everything else. Undaunted by the complications, Brandon and Melanie started looking into visas and between her dance school holidays, she flew to and from the States to organize the wedding.

WEDDINGS ARE HUGE IN AMERICA. “WHEN YOU GET ENGAGED YOU SET UP A WEBSITE, A WEDDING FACEBOOK PAGE AND A WEDDING EMAIL ADDRESS...

After looking at all the venues, everyone agreed on the winery at Villa de Amore in Temecula. The date was to be 1 August 2013. Melanie says, “This was a coincidence, but a nice one as it was the same date we’d got together in 2011.” The all inclusive price was $14,995, just over £9,600, (split between both families and not including alcohol or videographer). Once the venue was booked, Melanie confirmed everything else online. The wedding was organized more-or-less in one hit: the photographer, cake, florist etc. “I did it all in one day,” she says with a smile. American and British weddings differ slightly and Melanie, understandably, wanted a few British traditions preserved. “In America, they have a rehearsal dinner when the speeches are made,” she said, “and this happens before the wedding.” Melanie wanted

www.mags4dorset.co.uk

to stick with the tradition of having the speeches on the day, after the wedding. Brandon’s parents compromised and had a pre-wedding barbecue instead. The first dance before the dinner (wedding breakfast) was another Americanism that Melanie switched. “I wanted the first dance after the cutting of the cake, like we do back home, before the disco in the evening.” Weddings are huge in America. “When you get engaged you set up a website, a wedding Facebook page and a wedding email address. The bride and groom also set up a honey fund. This is so the guests can help fund the honeymoon instead of buying a gift. Ours was a Caribbean Cruise,” said Melanie, “and we put the honey fund towards it.” With everything organized, right down to her eight-year-old niece, Jessica, who sang a Disney song as Melanie walked down the aisle and Brandon’s sister Eron (20) who sang as the couple walked back up the aisle, plus Vera Wang suits for the men – all they needed was the gift of good weather. In California, unlike in Britain, this is kind of a given and the day couldn’t have been more perfect. The bride and groom and all the guests had a truly memorable time. The couple will be living in Wimborne and Melanie says, “Working on cruise ships is a life changing experience and Brandon and I understand each other. Our experience was a very positive thing and we took away very high standards.” Melanie owns Mainstage Performing Arts School in Wimborne and Brandon is an AV technician. He used to work for Cosmopolitan and hopes to get a similar job over here.

n May this year, I adopted Frosty a blackand-white rabbit from the Dorset animal charity, Waggy Tails Rescue. He’d been one of a pair, but his pal had already been re-homed. As well as Frosty, Waggy Tails supplied a hutch and a run for a donation. It was a good start, but Frosty was destined for bigger things. He soon had a spacious hand-made run in the garden where he could stretch his legs, leap over logs and eat grass to his heart’s content. Despite this, he looked lonely and I asked Waggy Tails if they had another rabbit to keep him company. I wanted a similar size bunny and a few weeks later, along came Pippa. She’d spent several years sharing a cage with a chinchilla and was very docile and

unadventurous; the opposite of Frosty. I borrowed a hutch and faced Pippa and Frosty so they could see each other. They were clearly intrigued. I then set up a second run within Frosty’s run so he got used to seeing Pippa in his domain. He was interested and they rubbed noses through the wire. Things progressed well, so at the end of the first week, I removed Pippa’s run, but Frosty chased her and though he wasn’t vicious, she looked panic stricken. After taking advice, I put the rabbits in neutral territory (our hall in the house) and suddenly their relationship improved. Frosty began to groom Pippa and she sat still while he did this. He particularly liked licking her eyes. It was a breakthrough and from then onwards, Frosty wasn’t so domineering in the run.

Bunnies

Now all I had to do was get the pair of them together in the hutch. I waited another week. It was nerve wracking when I finally put Pippa into Frosty’s hutch and, as I expected, he took great exception to her presence. He flattened his ears and chased her pulling tufts of fur out of her backside. There was a lot of foot thumping. In the end, I had to take her out. Back in their own hutches, they eyed each other in an oddly good-natured way so the following day, I tried again. To my surprise, they bonded and now they love being together. So it’s happy times for Frosty and Pippa – two rabbits that nobody wanted. In case you were wondering – there won’t be any baby bunnies. Waggy Tails ensures all rabbits they re-home are neutered.

Caring bikers call in to Burwood Over 40 members of the Christchurch Cruiser Club visited Broadstone care home, Burwood, last month to the delight of both residents and staff. The club arrived in very noisy convoy on a variety of motorbikes including Harley Davidsons and Triumphs. The members enjoyed showing their bikes to the residents and a few of the staff were brave enough to take a ride round the block on the back. For Burwood resident and motorsport fan, Dorothy, the visit was a real treat. The new boutique care home brings together over 30 years of nursing home experience from Sarah Jessup and her family. Burwood accommodates residents with varying degrees of nursing care,

including dementia. It is based on the idea that residents not only receive nursing care but also stimulation, variety and can continue to enjoy the things that they have always done within a small family-run home. The bedrooms have private balconies with views over the Burwood’s own copse. There is also a pub, The Railway Tavern, and a theatre for shows and movies all from within the comfort and security of the home. If you are looking for a care home with a difference, please call in.

in for a bite

RECIPE to keep you trim By Della Galton It’s coming up to that time of year when our thoughts turn to comfort food and Christmas – not necessarily in that order. Well, if you fancy eating some comfort food, but you don’t want to put on any weight before Christmas – you might like to try this omelette. It’s easy to make, very tasty, and has the advantage of being very low fat too. Serve it on its own for lunch, or with a salad for dinner. This recipe serves two – or possibly one very hungry person. If you can’t manage it all, just refrigerate the leftovers. It’s nice cold the following day.

Cocktail Sausage and Paprika Omelette (very low fat) Ingredients Half a packet of cooked Quorn cocktail sausages. (180g packet) 3 eggs 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1 small onion 2 green chillis (optional) Small handful of grated reduced fat mature cheddar Paprika Black pepper and salt to season Fat free spray to cook

Method

Chop peppers, onion and chillis and cooked cocktail sausages. Beat three eggs in separate bowl and season. Spray non stick frying pan with two to three sprays of fat free spray (I use Fry light). Add peppers, onions and chillis. Fry for few minutes till soft, add chopped sausages. Add paprika and chillis if using. Add eggs, cook till lightly set. Sprinkle on cheese and finish under grill. Grill until brown and starting to rise slightly.

26

4Dorset September 2013

NB: Instead of sausages – smoked salmon and prawns work well. So does a can of tuna in brine (drained). So does chopped bacon or ham (fat removed). Other optional ingredients: a small can of sweetcorn (no added sugar). Freshly chopped tomatoes. Fresh chives. A handful of black olives (in brine not oil). Leftover potato also works well (boiled potatoes – not roast!). If using potato, try adding garlic and lots of black pepper.

You can find more recipes at: www.howtoeatloadsandstayslim.com and on the Facebook page of the same name. How to Eat Loads and Stay Slim by Della Galton and Peter Jones is available in paperback, digital and audio.

From contemporary to traditional replacement kitchen door designs, and with 1000’s of colour combinations and finishing touch options to choose from, your replacement cabinet doors can be crafted to give you everything you would expect for your new kitchen.

Dream Doors in Poole is one family business that is bucking the trend.

ince opening the doors to its Poole showroom in 2011, business has grown from strength to strength and owners Clive and Angela Coldwell are proud of its success thus far. They have now taken the opportunity to expand their business to a new showroom in Christchurch.

“We would like to say a big thank you to all our past and present customers and look forward to welcoming new customers through our doors in both Broadstone and Christchurch,” added Angela.

Dream Doors in Broadstone, Poole is a family run business, yet has the backing of a National company. As long standing Members of Checkatrade, Dream Doors are a highly regarded company with showrooms up and down the country. Dream Doors opened its first kitchen showroom in Hampshire over 12 years ago, selling replacement kitchen doors and promoting its innovative kitchen facelift services from premises in Gosport. The owner saw the opportunity for massive growth across the UK, so took the decision to franchise the business. Now there are more than 45 franchise-owned kitchen showrooms throughout the UK, including Dream Doors in Poole run by Angela and Clive, each offering the same kitchen makeover service and vast range of made-to-measure replacement kitchen doors under the same large brand. From starting with £500, Dream Doors has now grown to a multi-million pound business and continues to expand. Its success stems from a quality product, sold by family businesses across the UK, backed up by a large national brand. Their reputation from Checkatrade allows customers to trust them in their own homes. Husband and wife team Angela and Clive set up the franchise in January 2011 and opened the new showroom in March 2011. Angela said: “We both worked in IT and took redundancy. We decided to do something relating to home improvements, we wanted to do something completing different. So, we went down the Dream Doors franchise route and things are going extremely well, we are 100 per cent up on last year which is fantastic.” Dream Doors Poole offers a quick, easy and economical alternative to replacing a whole kitchen. By replacing the doors and drawers they can transform your kitchen at a fraction of the cost of a complete new kitchen, often saving you up to 50-60 per cent. All doors are made to measure, so simply choose from a range of styles and colours and their fully trained craftsmen will do the rest, saving you time, hassle and stress. They also offer a wide range of worktops, sinks, taps, appliances, lighting and flooring, all installed by approved local tradesmen. Clive Coldwell said: “We offer a no obligation, free quotation service where customers are able to see actual samples in the comfort of their own home, allowing them to get a better idea of colours and styles that will suit their tastes. If needed, we can create CAD (Computer Aided Design) images to show customers what a change of layout or an entirely new kitchen will look like.”

education & classes James Lewer:

How to make the most of your first year at University! With the infamous university ‘Freshers Week’ just around the corner, young people all over the country will be flying the nest and embarking on a new life away from home comforts. If you’re heading off to university this September, by the end of the year you’ll be asking yourself where the time went. As someone who experienced this just twelve months ago, I feel I am well placed to pass on my knowledge. These are my top tips, which I hope will enhance your university experience.

1

Mix with as many people as possible

University opens up a new world of socialising. You’ll meet plenty of people of similar ages and interests not only in your flat, but on your course, in societies you join and during nights out. If you open yourself up to meeting lots of new people, you could make some friends for life. Freshers Week is the perfect opportunity, because everyone is in the same boat, so be confident and have fun!

2

Don’t overspend!

During your time at university you will have so many opportunities to go out, my advice is to hit Freshers Week with all guns blazing because it’s a time that you’ll never forget. But during term time, you’ll need to get the balance between work and play right! Budget your money, especially food / drink - limit yourself to £40-£60 a week depending on your loan and grant. Bars and clubs aren’t going to disapear overnight, so don’t think you have to take up every opportunity to party – club advertisers will make out every event

is the next big thing so my advice is to pick and choose sensibly which nights you choose to go out – i.e. if you have an early morning lecture the next day, perhaps think twice. Trust me, I’ve been in those shoes!

3

Keep your belongings in a safe place

First year presents you with the delights of living in Halls of Residence, where you meet lots of new people and will probably enjoy your fair share

of parties. If you were to ask the majority of students who’ve lived in student accomodation if anything went missing in the first year - big or small in size, they would probably say yes. So don’t leave your personal belongings lying about, as you will increase the chances of someone taking or using them. Halls often cross over to one-another’s flats to mix with different people throughout the residence, so this is when the chances of theft increase.

4

Join a society / group

University has a range of groups and societies which can keep you busy and its always good to have an outlet away from work and nights out. Do something you enjoy and meet new people, whether it’s a sport or joining the students’ union. I personally joined the student radio and magazine in my first year and it turned out to be one of the best decsions I made – I met new people, and had great fun at the same time.

Footlight Performance Academy Footlight Performance Academy offer a wide range of dance styles to suit every child from Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern and Performing Arts. The early years represent a time of rapid growth and development, when young children become aware of their bodies and what they can do with them. Most of their learning is connected to movement, so they need to explore the fundamental elements, such as walking, running, turning, and jumping. Developing the joy and ease of these core movements is pertinent to their future skills. Participation in a dance curriculum not only expands a child’s motor skills, but also improves their self-confidence and social skills. Footlight have classes throughout the Wimborne area. New plaque reveals history of Christchurch ducking stool Visitors to the replica ducking stool at Christchurch can now find out more about its history with a new plaque installed there thanks to Christchurch Antiquarian Society and Christchurch Council. The plaque now explains that, contrary to popular belief, it is unlikely that ducking stools were used to identify witches. Instead they were reserved for women found guilty of verbal abuse, brawling or other anti-social behaviour. Bev Miller from the Antiquarian Society said: “It was obvious that people were intrigued by the history behind the ducking stool.” Tourism Manager, Ann Simon said: “We’re very grateful to the members of the Antiquarian Society for researching the information which has been written on the plaque. I’m sure visitors to Christchurch will find the history behind the stool fascinating.”

Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college graduate who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He meets some colourful people who help him finally discover his purpose in life. Hilarious and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers and puppets. mags4dorset in conjunction with the Regent Centre (whose Box Office can be contacted on 01202 499199) is offering a pair of tickets to see Avenue Q on Wednesday, 16 October at 7.30pm. For your chance to win, answer the following question: What is the name of the main character, and college graduate in Avenue Q? How to enter - Send your name and answer on a postcard stating the name of the competition to mags4dorset, 1st Floor, King George V Pavilion, Peter Grant Way, Ferndown, Dorset, BH22 9EN, or enter at www.mags4dorset.co.uk. All the fun of the Woodfair The Cranborne Chase Woodfair is coming to Hampshire this autumn. Organised by the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty team. David Blake, one of the organisers, said, “We want people to come and taste local food, have a go at a craft or activity they have never tried, learn something utterly unexpected and wonderful and feel included and welcome and excited and hungry for more. We want to make this, the fourth Cranborne Chase Woodfair, even more inclusive and provide even more opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to get stuck in and have a go with lots of have a go workshops. “We’ve everything from big forestry machines to bronze age woodworking, falconry to furniture makers, timber frames to wood turning. The Cranborne Chase Woodfair will show why wood is as relevant today as it’s always been,” says organiser, David Blake.

He goes on to explain the philosophy behind the event: “We believe that the Woodfair is a celebration of some of the region’s most famous crafts, both traditional and contemporary undiluted by an overly commercial event. So you will not find a fun-fair, but you will have a lot of fun climbing trees, watching the displays and taking part in the theatre shows. You will not find lots of pseudooutdoor clothing made in China, but you will discover a treasure-trove of local products from food and furniture to toys and games. If you are looking for a fantastic day out this is it. If you want to get ahead with the Christmas shopping, look no further.”

A number of exciting bespoke workshops have been created to enable people to gain a deeper engagement with the event and the amazing people who make it all happen: the crafts people, the turners, bodgers, carvers, weavers, sculptors and coppice workers who will welcome you; the archaeologists, historians, ecologists, biologists, engineers, farmers, huntsmen, dog handlers, shooters and foresters who you will meet. These are available on a limited basis ahead of the event at www.cranbornechasewoodfair.eventbrite.co.uk

Annual Creative Writing Awards

This year’s mags4dorset’s Creative Writing Awards are underway “Last year was a huge success with hundreds of

entries flooding in,” said editor and author Janine Pulford. “There were far more than we expected. In fact, because we had included articles and poetry, we found the competition rather unwieldy to administer. It was surprising what a lot of extra work it made in the office by adding two more categories and for this reason, we have decided to revert back to running just the Short Story awards this year.” The theme for the short story in 2013 is: ‘Stars in your eyes.’ It could be a sizzling romance, the quest for stardom or even about stargazers and their accuracy at detecting asteroids on their way to planet Earth. Let your creativity flow, but keep the story to around 1,000 words.

PRIZES: 1st £150, 2nd £50, 3rd £25. The winning entries will also be published in one of our magazines and will appear on the website, where the magazines can be downloaded. The author will retain copyright of their work.

(Nissan Note 1.5 dci TEKNA) By Stephen Turvil

stephenturvil@googlemail.com

The Nissan Note 1.5 dci TEKNA is smarter than Oxford University’s brightest student. Why? Because it has systems that keep it, its occupants, and the people around it safer than the contents of the world’s strongest bank volt. issan’s Around View Monitor, for starters, incorporates a colour screen and a camera on each side of the vehicle. These show the motorist an aerial view of the surrounds that makes parking straightforward and minimises the risk of swapping paint with a lamppost. But that – much like Oxford University’s fiendishly tough entry exam - is only the beginning. Nissan’s Safety Shield includes blind spot warning and moving object detection systems. The former includes lights that are housed in the wing mirrors and spring to life when a nearby vehicle is hidden from view by (say) a rear pillar. If the motorist then signals to swap lanes the relevant

light flashes and is accompanied by an audible warning. The driver can then react quicker than an Oxford University student at the beginning of a boat race. The Moving Object Detection system, in contrast, warns the motorist when something or someone moves into the car’s path (assuming reverse gear is engaged). There is also the Shield’s Lane Departure Warning feature that alerts the driver if he/she wanders off-line. The Nissan Note 1.5 dci TEKNA has other strengths too. Highlights include the tastefully finished cabin, which is large enough for four adults to relax in comfort. Day trip to Oxford, anyone? This town car has a clever boot too. Why? Because it has an

underfloor storage area that can be enlarged by lifting the carpeted floor to a higher mounting point. This requires very little physical effort and takes seconds. The rear seats can also be folded flat – or pushed forwards – to enlarge this multipurpose vehicle’s cargo capacity. Plus it is a Nissan. The Note therefore feels beautifully screwed together and should outlast many of its rivals.

Furthermore, the 90PS diesel engine is teamed with five-speed manual transmission and ensures the car is fast enough for its class. More importantly, it averages 78mpg on paper which is extremely impressive. This staggering efficiency keeps carbon emissions to a minimum so this top of the range trim can be taxed for free. And good thing too – Oxford University students are notoriously hard up.

ARIES 21 March–20 April Finding romance will be as easy as falling off a log during the second week of September. There could be rows in the middle of September that you might enjoy but will actually have long lasting negative results. The days surrounding the 20th are perfect for asking for, and accepting a leadership role. Money from a refund, dividend, or legal settlement will arrive in the final days of the month.

CANCER 22 June–23 July It looks as if you’ll get fame, money, and success as a result of a brilliant idea. Bask in the glory as long as it lasts. Too often, you underplay your accomplishments. Let a loved one lead you into unfamiliar waters in midSeptember. This is a great time to sample foreign cuisine, try unfamiliar authors, and visit new places. A degree, award, or contract will be awarded to you in the final days of the month. This is your chance to capitalise on your expertise.

LIBRA 24 September–23 October Money from a job well done will come to you during the middle weeks of September, helping you buy some antiques and vintage goods. Surrounding yourself with beautiful things from another period inspires your creativity. Pay careful attention to your dreams toward the end of September, as one will inspire an impressive work of art. Projects involving music, poetry, and photography are looking particularly good. There is a good chance you will get paid for your work, which is a little like earning a salary to have fun.
