Firstly, thank youtothelovely readerswhogotin touchaftermyPresidentZelenskyy column. We all agreedit wassomethingthatneededwriting at that particularmoment.
Now, Iambackonmorefamiliar territory; local history.IfI mention ‘Mr. Rose’you couldbe forgiven forthinking I’mtackling George Rose(1744-1818),MP forChristchurch(1790-1818),wholived at ‘Cuffnells’ (Lyndhurst)andalsohad aplaceinMudeford, ‘Sandhills’, whichisnow aholidaypark. Rosebloomed to suchan extent henumbered GeorgeIIIandNelson amongsthismates.
But I’mnotdoinghim, oranyofhischildrenofwhom hehadthree, includingeldestsonSir GeorgeHenry Rose(1771-1855),whosucceeded GeorgeSnr.as ChristchurchMP,and William StewartRose(17751843)who wasapoetandtranslatorand resided at another Mudefordmansion, ‘Gundimore’,wherehe wasvisited by SirWalterScott.
So,whoam Igoing to look at withsomanyclimbing Rosesalreadydisregarded? Well,it’sactuallythethird sonof George RoseJnr.who confusesme by notbeing groupedwiththeother Rosesin my biographical dictionarybut under‘Strathnairn’as he wasHugh Rose,1stBaronStrathnairn(1801-85). In contrast to thefamily’s MPsandpoets,Hugh wasaseniorBritish Army officer, actuallyborninBerlinwherehisfather hadbeen‘EnvoyExtraordinary’(themindboggles).
In summationHugh Rose wasvariously:Military attaché to the Turks(1840); Consul-General forSyria (1841-48);Chargé d’affaires at Constantinople, today’s Istanbul(1852-54); Commissioner at the French HQ duringthe Crimean Warwhenhe foughtwiththe French Army at thebattlesofthe Alma(wherehewas wounded)and Inkerman;havingbeensenttoIndia (1857),themanwho ‘virtually reconquered’Central India(afterthe Indian Rebellion); Commander-inChiefin India(1860); Commander-in-Chiefin Ireland (1865-70). It wasaglitteringcareer by anystandard. Rosedidseemable to starta barneyinanemptyroom though: ‘OnthearrivalofMenshikoffin1853,he(Rose) precipitatedacrisis by sending fortheBritishfleet’. That wouldbe PrinceMenshikov, whocommanded Russian forcesinthefirsthalfofthe Crimean War. Thedate confirmsthatMenshikovhad rockedup in Constantinople to makedemandsonbehalfofthe Russianswhichclearlyhackedoff atruculentRose. The Crimean Warwasnotfar away.
Hugh Rosejoinedthepeeragein1866andbecamea field-marshalin1877. Ilikethe ‘VanityFair’caricature of Rose(1870)whichshows him resplendentintop hatandfrock coat,aslimpipe-cleanerof aman equippedwith asetof nashers‘RedRum’wouldhave beenproudof.Ifallelsehadfailedduringthattêteà-têtewith Menshikov, well,Rose couldhave sunk his teethinto him.
Rose, acareersoldier, nevermarriedandneverhad children. HismainresidencewasinHertfordshire, however, SandhillshasbeendescribedasHugh’s ‘summer residence’,andheliesburiedinChristchurch’s Priorychurchyard.
