THE LAUNCH OF THE DORSET BUSINESS FESTIVAL
As always, it’s a busy time in Dorset Chamber. Our events continue to be very busy, providing hugely valuable opportunities for people from the business community to network, make new connections and create new relationships and opportunities. I’m also always struck by the resilience and positivity I see from our business community. Despite a very challenging economic climate, businesses are fed up with the doom and gloom from the media and are keen to get on with business and move forward positively. It also feels like things are going in the right direction despite some remaining challenges for business.
With this in mind, towards the end of last year, we announced the Dorset Business Festival, a threeday festival running from 10th to the 12th of October celebrating Dorset businesses which will take place at the Hilton Bournemouth. The festival will begin with a business conference themed “The Future of Business”, a business exhibition the next day and the return of the Dorset Business Awards on our final day. Our keynote speaker at the conference will be David Smith, economics editor of the Sunday Times and our host will be presenter and journalist Declan Curry who you may well recognise from BBC Breakfast. The exhibition will provide businesses with a fantastic showcasing opportunity as well as the ability to connect with other exhibitors and
delegates attending. The re-defined Dorset Business Awards will also be a very special celebration recognising the fantastic businesses in our county. We’ll be opening for award entries on 1st May 2023. We are delighted to have the support of our Premier Festival Partner Lester Aldridge and Festival Partners who will be announced soon.
We are delighted to work with such a broad range of businesses and organisations
We’ll be formally launching the Dorset Business Festival at our Presidents Lunch on 19th April, sponsored by Lester Aldridge. Our President Caron Khan will host the event and we will also welcome guest speaker Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce. You can book your place at this prestigious lunch event at the Italian Villa on our website. This will be the premier business event of the year in Dorset so we hope you will be able to join us for a great celebration of Dorset businesses.
Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset ChamberCustomer research can sometimes feel like a massive task, something that drops to the bottom of the list with more pressing priorities pushing it further down. But according to Lee Hill, MD and Founder of Insightful UX, beware of the risks of not getting to understand the truth behind what motivates your customers. In this feature, Lee gives a flavour on how research could become your best friend and how you ignore this vital step of your customer relationship at your peril.
Reach the right audiences. We see many clients targeting an audience, who are not the audience who are more likely to buy from them. Worryingly, clients can often spend more on this audience and get a far lower return.
Fixing this is relatively easy. Our team runs a survey on a huge data set to identify the demographic info of those most likely to buy from you. We then define this audience and use this information to conduct further research on them, looking to see how we can appeal to them in the right way. Finally we then use the initial research findings to target this audience via research. This is known as segmentation, positioning and targeting.
20 to 40% of what our prospects thought they know about their audience was wrong!
Having conducted over 70 audience research studies over the last 6 years we know that many businesses make a lot of assumptions about their customers. This is costly as it leads to key business decisions being made on bad data. For me this illustrates the key reason why a portion of the marketing budget should include research.
Wouldn’t you rather spend your marketing budget knowing it is being as effective as it could be rather than risk a large proportion of that budget going down the drain based on fundamental assumptions being incorrect? This could be the wrong message, media, timing, audience segment, service offered etc etc etc.
Research in 2023 is more accessible, less costly and more valuable than EVER before, thanks to THREE key drivers:
Methodologies - there are more ways than ever to gather meaningful insight that are seen as being more robust and commercially helpful in implementing powerful actions Technology - means we can recruit, analyse, code and transcribe more easily using tech, which gives us more accurate outputs and saves on labour time (and costs)
Panels - There are fantastic audience panels available now that means accessing audiences is cheaper and insights can be gathered in days as opposed to weeks. We work with business across Dorset and the UK, helping them to shape their marketing and business decisions based on data and insight. To find out more about how we can help your business better understand its customer - or where to find growth in an existing customer journey - get in touch.
Digital marketing is one of the fastest changing industries in the UK. With economic uncertainty and the cost-ofliving crisis causing distress to customers and communities, it’s more important than ever to understand how small businesses are navigating the troubled water and still achieving growth goals.
Recently, LOCALiQ conducted a first ever state of digital marketing nationwide business survey to gain a better understanding of the state of digital marketing in the UK. The UKwide survey offers vital information on trends, challenges, budgets, and goals according to more than 300 small businesses in the UK.
Reducing costs ranked last in the list of priorities for marketers this year, showing that more and more businesses are recognising marketing as a worthy area for investment and not an area for cost-cutting.
Top of the list of internal challenges was gaps in knowledge and skill sets, showing that marketers are keen to learn in order to ensure they keep up with the changing world of marketing. The report also found:
70% of businesses indicated they struggle
to keep up with changing technologies within the marketing industry, and 50% of UK businesses think that marketing has overwhelmingly changed in the past 2 years.
64% of businesses are using social media as part of their marketing strategy, even though almost half said they felt they needed more training in social media
Only 30% of SMBs across the UK use a form of marketing automation. Here’s
Use marketing automation and technology to maximise spend vs. cutting spend Marketing automation is when a business streamlines marketing activities, or leverages machine-learning, so steps taken to capture or nurture a lead can be prompted in realtime, with little or no human involvement. With its quick, adaptive abilities, marketing automation can exponentially increase the amount of leads that come into your sales funnel, conversions, and ultimately increase the return on your marketing investment with lower cost per lead (CPL).
Marketing automation can seem like a frightening topic to learn and implement for a business owner or marketer. Solutions
from companies like Google, however, can make it easier. Google’s Responsive Search Ads are a great example of how a business can incorporate marketing automation into a digital marketing and paid search strategy.
With its machine learning and automation technology, Google could have the ability to create 1,000 variations of your paid search ad, whereas you may only be able to create 3 or 4 paid search ads yourself. Enhance your teams capability with external support
According to the LOCALiQ UK State of Digital Marketing Report, only 46% of outsource marketing, including websites, SEO, and digital advertising – and 25% plan to do this more throughout 2023.
Partnering with a reputable, credible marketing agency with proven success could be the secret ingredient your business needs to receive more return from your marketing campaigns.
For example, some digital marketing agencies, such as LOCALiQ, have their own cutting-edge technologies. The LOCALiQ campaign optimisation technology, adjusts your digital marketing campaigns and budgets in real-time with no human intervention to optimise towards your chosen conversion goal.

AFC Bournemouth is delighted to confirm the Women’s Team will take to the pitch at the Vitality Stadium in April.
The side, managed by Steve Cuss, will host Maidenhead United on Sunday 16th April (2pm kick-off) as they build on a strong season.
It’s only the second time that the women’s team have been in competitive action at Vitality Stadium and the game will be played in association with partners Bournemouth University, who will celebrate a second BU Big Match of the season.
At the time of writing, the Cherries are currently sat in third position in the FA Women’s National League Division One South West, Tier 4 of the women’s football league pyramid. It makes for a remarkable campaign for one of the youngest teams in the league, with a host of academy talent making their mark in the first team this season.
The team had successfully achieved four promotions over the last few years to reach this level and are continuing to challenge for promotion this season.
The club also reached the FA Cup second round during the previous season, the furthest in the club’s history. With the impressive league form and position, and the recognition of successful promotions to reach this level, the future of the women’s game is incredibly promising.
Will you show up to support the women’s team?

A leading Dorset funeral director has welcomed BCP Council’s decision to make Poole Crematorium operational again – after leading a campaign to have eco-cremators re-installed.
Nick Douch, managing director of Douch Family Funeral Directors, said he was delighted that councillors had listened to the concerns of their constituents.
The local authority has decided to invest £2,437,516 in buying two cremators for the facility off Gravel Hill.
The crematorium has been without cremators since 2020 and it has been run merely as a service chapel, with the deceased being conveyed to Bournemouth for cremation.
As recently as September last year it was thought that its future would be only as a ceremonial function room, despite the huge area it serves and the increasing demand in the area.
However, at a recent council meeting various proposals were put on the agenda with members opting for the purchase and installation of two electric cremators, which they can promote as ‘green’.
Nick Douch, whose company runs seven branches in Dorset and who led the campaign, said: “It always seemed the wrong decision to close it permanently as a crematorium.
“We lobbied and campaigned hard and the councillors really took the message on board and thankfully have decided to return it to an operational facility.
“We are grateful to John Ainsworth of Churches Together in Poole, Tony Reeves, who started the petition, local funeral directors who backed the campaign, the public who supported the campaign and to the council for making what we believe is obviously the correct decision.” www.fcdouch.co.uk

To be part of the next phase of Trunki’s journey has been an honour and we are excited to see what comes next for Trunki and the Heroes team. In the field of HR and employment law, it is a particular pleasure to work with parties who share a common passion for the success of the business and its people. Good luck everyone!”
Trevor Bell, Chair of Magmatic Limited, comments: “It was an absolute pleasure to work with ViewHR on the sale of Trunki. In addition to guiding us through every step of the complex details of the relevant legislation, they were at our side throughout the process, including working closely with Heroes. They provided an invaluable resource without which we would not have been able to complete the transaction on the timescale that we did.”

by Caron KhanWith the first quarter of the year under your belt, now is the time to ensure your business makes the absolute most out of 2023. But this doesn’t mean slamming on the accelerator in a bid to increase productivity, it means stopping, examining, and ensuring you have a robust strategy that is securely aligned to your business objectives.
Understanding your starting point is crucial to building a successful strategy. Examining where you are and your strengths and weaknesses gives you the foresight to remedy them in the future, and this will be an important part of your overall strategy.
TO ACHIEVE THEM?
This encompasses both your short-term and long-term business objectives. Your strategy must be securely aligned to any business objectives, and will identify the stepping-stones that lead to the desired outcome...
Understanding your target market inside out is fundamental to creating a successful strategy, and any shortcuts will undermine the result. What you need to achieve is a strategy that gets noticed. To do this, you need to identify your audience and understand what drives their decision-making.
There’s no doubt that when it comes to creating a strategy, it’s important to ensure the entire team are on board with it. Not only does this help to achieve the business’ goals, but it also brings the team together and motivates them to work towards a common objective.
AND
MEASURE! Whilst helping your business achieve its goals is the fundamental purpose of a strategy, it’s also important to measure results accurately and regularly. Your strategy will incorporate this, giving you the tools and knowhow to understand whether you’re proceeding as planned, or deviating from the path.
New legislation to combat land being used for money laundering in the UK was introduced in March 2022. From 1 August 2022 it was a requirement for overseas entities to register at Companies House. On 16 January 2023 further provisions were made enforceable. We have set out below a guide to ensuring you are compliant.
On 15 March 2022 the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022 (ECTEA 2022) received royal assent.
On 1 August 2022 the majority of Part 1 of the ECTEA 2022 came into force, introducing the requirement for overseas entities (OEs) that own land or property in the UK to declare their beneficial owners and/or managing officers on the Register of Overseas Entities (ROE) at Companies House.
On 16 January 2023 sections 7 and 8 of Part 1 of ECTEA 2022 requiring OEs to comply with the “updating duty” came into force.
Section 7 of the ECTEA 2022 requires OEs to update the ROE in relation to its beneficial owners and/or managing officers. It is an offence under section 8 of the ECTEA 2022 not to comply with this updating duty.
Under section 7, OEs must update the ROE within 14 days after its ‘update period’. An update period is the period of 12 months beginning with the date of the OE’s registration and thereafter the period of 12 months beginning with the day after the end of the previous update period.
Therefore there is an obligation on OEs to update the ROE annually, even if no changes to beneficial ownership have occurred.
An OE may update the ROE where beneficial ownership of an OE has changed prior to the expiry of its update period. At present however, this is not required by the legislation.
Update periods may also be shortened by notifying the registrar of the shortened update period and delivering the updated statement of information within 14 days of doing so. The ROE is yet to roll out the process for this.
If the beneficial ownership of the overseas entity was incorrect at the point of registration and requires correction, rather than requiring updating, then there is a separate system which allows for this information to be amended at the ROE.
When the time comes where the OE can provide its update, in order for it to comply fully with its duty, it must deliver a statement that it either has or has not got reasonable cause to believe that at least one person has become or ceased to be a registerable beneficial owner during its update period. Where an OE has reasonable cause, it must then provide further information concerning the change, particularly documents concerning the identity of beneficial owners. These documents may take time to collate,
Under section 8 of the ECTEA 2022 it is a fineable offence of the OE and its officers not to comply with the updating duty and to enable continued non-compliance.
It is important to ensure that the OE is aware of its duties under the ECTEA 2022 and to prepare to update the ROE within 14 days of its updating period as set out above.
Whilst updating should not be an onerous task for OEs which have experienced no change during the 12 months since initial registration, any OE which has had a change in managing officers and/or beneficial owners should ensure the information required for updating is collated well in advance of their updating deadline to ensure compliance.

The Poole office of Azets is posting 12 to 15 per cent annual growth as it celebrates one year of being part of the top 10 accountancy firm.
The long-established independent business Inspire was acquired by Azets in March 2022 as part of strategic growth plans across the UK.
Since then it has gone from strength to strength with extra roles created as organic growth has taken the total staff to 40 to serve 1,000-plus client across Bournemouth, Poole and the wider Dorset and Solent region.
Backed by the might of the Azets’ organisation, there are now ambitious plans which could see the office potentially double in size.
The Commercial Road base is headed by Office Managing Partner Warren Munson who is supported by Partners Andrew Singleton and Chris Downing. Last month three new associate directors and two new managers were named as business demand continues to grow at the office.
Warren, who founded his previous firm in 2004, said the acquisition by Azets had added greater access to resources, experts, and technology, as well as the umbrella of support of a brand.
He said: “The fact that we are now posting annual growth figures of between 12 per cent and 15 per cent year on year, outpacing inflation, vindicates our decision to become part of the Azets family.
“It has been a smooth integration across 12 months. The message from Azets at the very start was ‘business as usual’ and that is what it has continued to be. We now have the confidence to step forward and take on new work.
“Azets has given us the freedom to develop and invest in our people. We have seen it with the team – we have had recent multiple promotions and six new hires in 12 months – and colleagues can now see a more accessible path to personal growth.” www.azets.com
The Dorset Business Festival – the first event of its kind in the chamber’s 74-year history – is being held from October 10 to 12. Delegates from across the region are expected to attend the three-day extravaganza, which will include a conference, expo and the long-awaited return of the Dorset Business Awards.
Lester Aldridge has pledged its support as Premier Festival Partner for the summit at the Hilton Hotel in Bournemouth town centre.
Ian Girling, chief executive, Dorset Chamber spoke to Grant Esterhuizen, Partner, Lester Aldridge, about its decision to support this unique event. The Dorset Business Festival will celebrate our vibrant and thriving business community. What is it that makes Dorset such a special place to do business?
We have a lot to celebrate within Dorset. We have an incredibly diverse business community from agriculture, coastal businesses and tourism to commerce &
business centres and education. Dorset is often referred to as Silicon South for the number of digital, creative and tech sectors within it. We have a wide geographical spread of businesses across a large number of sectors and all of this within an idyllic landscape setting.
What made you decide to become a Premier Festival Partner?
To our knowledge, this is the first three day business festival being run by Dorset Chamber which is an innovative event to be associated with. It also gives us a unique opportunity to support our local business community and some excellent new DCCi initiatives, such as a focus on ESG issues. What are you looking forward to the most from the Dorset Business Festival?
We are looking forward to the ‘buzz’ of the three day festival, with each day offering a different opportunity to get
together with business people across our diverse business community. The unique format, making new network contacts, catching up with associates and friends at an event where our whole firm can get involved is all a very exciting prospect. The Dorset Business Awards are relaunching for the Festival following several years of Covid restrictions. How has the Dorset business landscape changed in recent years and what have we got to be positive about?
Lester Aldridge was involved at the very start of the Dorset Business Awards in the early 2000’s as one of the very first sponsors. We are excited to see the awards’ return and be there to celebrate some of the great businesses in Dorset. The awards themselves have been missed by many, including ourselves, and we are looking forward to its new format and award categories. We are certain that the whole festival will be overwhelmingly positive, and it will present a great opportunity for businesses from across Dorset to network and celebrate. We are indeed blessed to work within a diverse society that is, relatively speaking, free and safe and with boundless opportunity now that Covid restrictions have abated.

The chamber has been supporting businesses for over 100 years, encouraging and inspiring businesses of all sizes. We’ve helped many people to find their feet in the local business community, by providing an environment where they can connect with likeminded people. In recent years we’ve represented the concerns of businesses to the local councils, contributing to a significant cut in the cost of car parking charges. We played an important role in the establishment of the Weymouth BID, in whose operation we take a keen interest.
Family brewers, Hall & Woodhouse (H&W), raised over £600,000 for charities and local good causes in 2022 through a mix of fundraising events, challenges, direct giving from the business, and implementing local initiatives at each of its pubs across the south. This achievement has set the independent brewer on track for reaching its goal of raising £1million per annum for charities and good causes within its local communities by 2027. Additionally, in recognition of last year’s fundraising and giving success, H&W was awarded
the Corporate Community Hero Award from the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group.
Anthony Woodhouse, Chairman of Hall & Woodhouse, said: “Giving back to the community and using our own resources to directly enrich the areas where our pubs are located, is at the centre of Hall & Woodhouse’s ambitions as a company. We are so proud and grateful to all our team members, without them coming together and working as one, none of this would have been possible.”

FOCUS
with Frettens Solicitors
Most commercial property leases are fully repairing and insuring (FRI) leases. This is where the tenant is responsible for the repair, maintenance and insurance of the property. FRI leases can be used for leases of whole (for example, one unit on an industrial estate) and leases of part (for example, a ground floor shop with residential flats above).
With a lease of whole, the tenant would be responsible for all costs in relation to the property, which includes the exterior roof, structure and the interior of the property. With a lease of part, it’s important for the definition of ‘property’ to be properly defined. For example, they will often refer to including one half horizontally if the property being leased is situated on the ground floor. This is because the tenant of the first floor will be responsible for the remaining half which will form part of their flooring.
In both a lease of whole and of part the landlord will insure the property and recover the sums back from the tenant. They will want to make sure the property is insured correctly and covers all ‘insured risks’ required for that particular property. Despite the landlord being responsible for the arrangement of insurance, the tenant will usually pay for it.
For the lease of whole, the tenant is responsible for all repairs to either keep the property in ‘good (and substantial) repair and condition’ or in the same state as set out in the schedule of condition. For the lease of part, repair responsibilities will be shared. The landlord will be responsible for the exterior structure, services and common parts. The tenant will be responsible for the interior property.
If you’re unsure of your responsibilities or have any questions, please feel free to get in touch using the information below.

The current trend of hybrid working, whilst allowing employees extra flexibility, means staff have less human contact, which in turn impacts their wellbeing. Dorset Mind charity has developed a creative solutionby launching team-building packages that offers businesses the chance to invest in and improve the connectivity of their workplace. This also supports the charity financially to deliver essential 1-2-1 and group support and education for local people in Dorset.
The charity encourages businesses to connect, learn and ‘Build their own’ Minds Together package. Within this, they will choose a mental health educational session the charity’s Training Team will deliver, combined with a fun activity from a range of trusted partners, including Rock Reef, R1SE Bournemouth, Resurface, Layla Gordon Nutrition and Eco in Mind - the charity’s own
Dorset Mind’s training sessions include Mental Health Awareness, Managing Stress, Anxiety and Burnout; Boundaries and Resilience, and the popular Courageous Conversations which encourages people to make conversations about mental health part of their everyday life.
Linda O’Sullivan, CEO of Dorset Mind comments, “Mental health has had to become everyone’s business - and employees have a duty to look after their employees’ wellbeing, whether they work remotely or in their business setting. Evolving from lockdowns, the hybrid way of working comes at a cost to social inclusion – so what better way to boost your team’s morale than enjoying a teambuilding day, whilst supporting your local mental health charity too!”

Having the right insurance policies in place can save you and your family enormous amounts of stress – and money – if things don’t work out as planned for your company.
Here’s 5 key protections to consider:
1. Shareholder protection: Also known as business succession planning protection, this ensures other owners of the business (the shareholders) can keep control of the company if one of them dies or is seriously ill.
2. Business loan protection: Most businesses have some form of debt, so it makes sense to put a policy in place that helps meet any outstanding financial commitments should you become critically ill or die.
3. Key-person protection: This recognises key people in the company and the impact on profits if one of them becomes ill or dies. A key person can be anyone who can be justifiably described as integral to the business.
4. Relevant life insurance: This is a taxefficient form of life insurance taken out by the company for an employee, which pays a lump sum to the employee’s family if the person covered dies or is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
5. Group schemes: By introducing employee benefits such as income protection, critical illness cover and private medical insurance, you support the financial wellbeing of employees as well as the business itself. It’s easy to shrug off the need for protection by thinking you’re unlikely to suffer from adverse events – or believing that if you do, your personal savings or cash in the company will cover it. This can be dangerous and costly attitude so it’s important to take action.

Although the increase is very much welcome by workers due to the ongoing cost of living crises, they will not come without challenges to businesses for the same reasons. Recent years have seen huge pressure on pay rates at all levels in a bid for companies to attract and retain workers in a market facing significant labour shortages; no doubt this will continue throughout the year ahead with starting rates well above the new National Living Wage. For the last few months, local businesses have been conducting market reviews and carrying out planning activities to ensure their strong position when it comes to attracting workers for their busy periods in the new financial year.

Best Companies, the organisation behind the Sunday Times Awards, have recognised Frettens in their latest league tables for Q1 of 2023.
The group base their rankings on an anonymous employee engagement survey, completed by all of the team.
Following Frettens’ recommendation as an ‘outstanding’ place to work in December, Best Companies revealed that it ranks in the Top 5 Law Firms to work for, the Top 10 Best Companies in the South West and the UK’s Top 25 Mid-Sized companies.
“Measuring employee engagement is crucial to the development of our
business and the Best Companies survey allows us to do this totally anonymously, on a regular basis.” Says Managing Partner Matthew Fretten.
“We take the survey very seriously and the results enable us to assess how engaged our employees are, identify areas for improvement and take action.
We’re pleased to see such positive results this year, with our highest ranking yet. It re-affirms that we are heading in the right direction and you can clearly see an upwards trend year on year.”

When you think sustainably about workwear and PPE, the three R’s ‘Reduce, reuse and recycle’ will come to mind.
We use this mantra at Tower to develop our support and services. For recycling we have our ZeroWaste service and for reducing our CtrlCloud online order management system. But what about reusing?
To support the reuse of products, I help customers choose higher-quality garments. These consistently have a longer life, which means they’re more suitable for reusing or reissuing when an employee leaves. This is also important for employers looking to implement sustainable initiatives.
Reissuing items such as shirts, trousers, boots, or hardhats in employee starter packs is a good habit to adopt. Ordering through CtrlCloud simplifies this process and makes it easy to identify the initial date the item was issued, helping estimate the product’s life expectancy.
After being carefully checked and cleaned, these items can easily be handed down between employees. Being transparent about this process and why you do it will also attract the right employees with the same environmental values as your business.
Achieving all three R’s is something I can support customers with. And when it comes to reusing, this means considering higher-quality products than can be reissued. Choosing PPE and workwear that lasts longer, then supporting employees with maintaining it correctly, is essential in tackling the challenge of making workwear and PPE much more sustainable.

Dorset Chamber president Caron Khan is hosting the lunch, sponsored by Premier Partner Lester Aldridge, which will also mark the official launch of a three-day Dorset Business Festival 2023 being held in October.
She said: “Shevaun is one of the UK’s most influential and high-profile business leaders so I am delighted that she has agreed to speak at my President’s Lunch as my special guest.
“The event will also herald the buildup to our much anticipated Business Festival in what promises to be a very exciting year for the Dorset Chamber.”

Chief executive Ian Girling said: “This promises to be a superb event with one of the titans of the business world.
“Our thanks go to Shevaun for agreeing to attend and to Lester Aldridge for its much valued support.”

Shevaun’s CV includes roles at the Walt Disney Company, WPP, Dot Native and an edtech charitable foundation as well as the Cabinet Office and Number 10 where she managed business partnerships and ran the Inclusive Economy Partnership.
A new agreement aimed at addressing post-Brexit issues in Northern Ireland has been revealed by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
Here’s what you need to know about the Windsor Framework and what you can expect in the coming months.
What impact will the Windsor Framework have? Under the new plan, goods arriving into Northern Ireland from Great Britain will go into a new green lane and will require less paperwork. Meanwhile, goods destined for the EU will go to the red lane where checks will be carried out. It delivers free-flowing trade in goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland by removing any sense of the border in the
Irish Sea for goods staying within the UK.
These goods will travel as normal through a new green lane without red tape or unnecessary checks, with the only checks remaining designed to prevent smuggling or crime.
This means that, while businesses transporting goods via the green lane will need to provide less information and won’t need to provide a transit declaration. They will still be expected to provide an ENS (Entry Summary Declaration).
As stated by BIFA: “Whilst an ICS Safety and Security Declaration will still be required for goods entering Northern Ireland the amount of data that will be required in the customs declaration will be reduced.”
What will the transition period look like?
For the Windsor Framework to be
Companies participating in international trade, may apply to the UK Customs administration to become an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). AEO status offers businesses a number of advantages in international trade.
What is an AEO?
An AEO is essentially an economic operator, who can demonstrate high levels of trade compliance and security of their supply chain. Companies that wish to obtain AEO authorisation must meet five criteria:
• the absence of any serious infringement of customs and taxation law
• a high level of control over commercial operations
• financial solvency
• practical standards of competence or professional qualifications
• appropriate security and safety standards in cases where the application is for AEOS. An AEO enjoys more favourable treatment than other economic operators: in respect of customs controls, including fewer physical and documentary controls. The extent to
which a company receives such facilitations, depends on the specifications in the licence. In addition, AEOs that are involved in export, will benefit from any Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) that the UK has negotiated with other countries.
An AEO status is an internationally recognised quality mark, that shows your business’s role in the international supply chain is secure and has customs control procedures in place that meet Authorised Economic Operator standards. There are 2 types of AEO status:
• Authorised Economic Operator Customs Simplification (AEOC) which provides benefits in relation to certain simplifications of customs formalities.
• Authorised Economic Operator Security and Safety (AEOS) that entitles the holder to facilitations for trade in goods. Both authorisations can be simultaneously applied for by the economic operator, and both types of AEO status may be held at the same time.
The AEO authorisation requirements and guidelines can be found in the UK official

implemented, there are several things that need to happen. Chiefly, MPs will vote on the new legislation. If the majority are in favour, then the Government will begin the process of “phasing in” the Windsor Framework.
To give businesses and individuals time to prepare, the implementation of the agreement will be phased in, with some of the new arrangements for goods, agrifood, pets and plant movements introduced later this year and the remainder in 2024. In the meantime, the current temporary standstill arrangements will continue to apply.
The UK Government will no longer proceed with the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, as the UK and EU have come to a negotiated agreement. Similarly, the agreement will mean the EU withdrawing all of the legal actions it has launched against the UK.
website and international legislation. Fewer physical and document-based controls This benefit is applicable to holders of both AEOC and AEOS.
An AEO will be subject to fewer physical and document-based controls than other economic operators, in respect of customs controls, according to the type of authorisation granted. However, the UK Customs administration may decide to control shipments of an AEO in order to take into account a specific threat, or control obligations set out in other Union legislation (i.e. related to product safety).
Here, it is important to make a distinction between controls related to security/safety and controls related to other matters. AEOS can benefit from fewer physical and documentbased controls related to security and safety, and AEOCS can benefit from fewer controls related to other measures. Such controls may relate to the point of import or export, and may also relate to post-clearance controls, and are based on customs risk-assessment, which may be higher for some AEOs or for particular transactions than others.

You may be familiar with the link between activity and exercise and better mental health. Here are 6 reasons why you really need to prioritise your physical wellbeing, to support your mental wellbeing. And don’t forget, exercise doesn’t need to be a 10 mile run. Just getting outside and raising your heart rate can make a big difference, so do something you love! Here’s why:
1. Exercise improves your deep sleep.
Aerobic exercise increases the amount of deep and restorative sleep you get at night by helping you get into that stage 3 and 4 sleep, making you feel refreshed and restored the next day. So, if you find it hard to sleep, try to get that blood pumping at least 4 hours before bed.
2. Exercise relieves stress hormone levels.
The stress hormone - cortisol - is natural. But, when you are chronically stressed and your body is continuously producing cortisol, it can affect your mental health and your physical health. If you exercise during the day, your cortisol levels are lower by the evening. So use exercise as a tool for stress management - use it to motivate you. In doing so, it should help you reduce your cortisol and feel better.
3. Exercise affects your mood-related hormones.
If you’re familiar with that post-exercise glow, you’ll have felt the effects of these hormones before. Monoamines and endorphins are two essential hormones said to be responsible for mood improvements from exercise. The effects are linked to short-term improvements immediately after a session and are also related to longterm impacts like decreased feelings of depression. So whilst it can’t fix the bigger issues, you can be assured that exercise will lift your mood.
4. Exercise improves your memory and attention.
Research shows links between physical exercise and ‘cognitive functioning‘. Essentially, you’re likely to see positive impacts on your mental alertness because of an increase in blood flow from aerobic activity. So, if it all feels a bit overwhelming and you’re finding it hard to focus, exercise should help.
5. Exercise increases self-esteem.
The link between exercise and self-esteem is not about changing how you look, but about feeling better about yourself. The psychological effect of regularly taking on a challenge is shown to lead to higher levels of self-esteem, helping you to reconfirm your own abilities every day. So celebrate your achievements, acknowledge what you’ve done and use it to motivate yourself to set new goals.
6. Exercise gives you more energy.
Feeling lethargic and lacking in energy is both the result and a cause of mental health struggles. When you don’t feel your best, you don’t tend to think your best either. When your fitness improves, changes happen to your cells, making more energy available to you. In essence, you give the energy to get more energy. So don’t focus on how exercise will make you look, but how it will make you feel.
Exercise can improve our sleep, boost our mood and help manage stress levels. Combining exercise with being outside in the fresh air and playing as part of a team can bring additional benefits. Who better to comment further on this than members of LA’s own successful netball team, the L’Eagles!
Danielle Slater, Associate, told me that she “loves being active, and likes how netball brings people together from different parts of the firm”. She agrees that it is great to be out in the fresh air after being inside at a desk for the majority of the day, and says “as it’s a team sport, we all support each other and work together so there’s a feeling of comradery and friendship”. Solicitor Emily Chapman agrees, she says “your teammates become your friends. Spending an hour running about outside after a day at your desk helps you switch off and keep the work-life balance”.
Another member of the team, Ashleigh Vear, says, “It has been hugely beneficial to me in creating new friendships, and in keeping my mind and body active.”
Perhaps now is the right time to join a team or set yourself a challenge to learn a new sport.

As an employer, of course you want to recruit somebody with relevant industry skills. They’re a proven entity. They’ll be easier to train, manage and they’ll perform better, quicker (that’s the theory). Your priority is to build your organisation.
Despite excellent initiatives being run across the county and nationally, many young people, and those returning to work, still find it a real struggle to get work experience on their CVs. At a recent LSIP event, it was suggested that up to 70% of graduates don’t have any work experience. Those from more affluent backgrounds can rely on a network to facilitate work experience opportunities, which other young people cannot access. For young people who have taken on roles in hospitality, retail, and other flexible sectors to support themselves during studies, it can also be hard to get access to industry specific opportunities. So, whilst they may have some great experience working, it may not appear to be relevant for future employers.
The knock-on effect? At best, young people haven’t had a real taste of the workplace, so the reality of daily operations when they do qualify and go into a role can come as a bit of a surprise. At its worst, they just don’t get the job - even with the right qualifications in place and the full support of their school, college, university or a provider.
An increased lack of confidence on top of no work experience opportunities has resulted in some
new to the workplace ‘terrified’ of the prospect of an unknown culture. However, young people are also better at saying how they feel as we have all felt scared at times at work so this should be no real surprise. Learning to share how we feel and what ‘work’ is like, together, will help close a Covid sized generation gap and boost the labour force and economy in Dorset. One school, college or University leaver who feels safe to go to work not scared will be transformational for them and relatively simple and very satisfying for an employer to achieve. Imagine how 100s of local young people excited and inspired by their new experiences would impact every part of Dorset’s community. It’s doable – get in touch to know how
Creating opportunities for people to gain that all important work experience is a responsibility we all share. To address the growing unemployment issue and volume of vacancies, businesses should be encouraged to provide opportunities for work experience. It’s a great way to enrich your workforce, to identify new talent and to support the community. Organisations such as the Dorset Careers Hub, local colleges, schools, universities, other training providers, run great work experience initiatives that support businesses to offer these opportunities. They’re on hand to support you, the employer, to make it as easy as possible to offer what could be a life changing experience.
Dorset Chamber has been commissioned by the Department for Education to identify the skills gaps which businesses like you may be facing now, or in the future. This will help to ensure the changing skills needs across the region are understood and relevant opportunities are provided to upskill the current workforce and prepare young people to meet emerging and new workplace needs.
This is known as the Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan (Dorset LSIP).
During the last few months, the Dorset LSIP team has been reaching out to hundreds of businesses of all sizes across Dorset, inviting managers, leaders, and HR professionals to complete a short online survey or take part in a telephone interview. Insights and findings generated through this process will be shared in an action plan to develop post16 technical education provision in Dorset, working with our Colleges, independent training providers, employers and learners. The priorities have now been identified and these are being discussed with the stakeholders as part of the plan creation process.
