DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

Welcome to the December edition of Dorset Business Focus and we draw to the end of a year that many will be happy to see the back of. Covid-19 has unbelievably impacted on all our lives, some more than others, and I don’t think any of us would have deemed this possible at the beginning of the year. I was recalling events in the Chamber earlier this year; we were one of the first Chambers to ask people to refrain from any contact and were criticized by some that this was excessive. Within a week or so of this, we cancelled our events for April and May and literally within a few weeks we were in lockdown. Covid-19 took a hold with lightning speed. The impact of Covid has been devastating for many businesses and we are beginning to see differences in the way that sectors have been impacted and businesses are recovering. Clearly businesses in hospitality, tourism, retail and events have been hit extremely hard and it’s vital the Government does all it can to support the recovery of these industries and it’s crucial that support is commensurate with the impact of Covid. Other sectors are beginning to report improvements in trading conditions including construction, manufacturing and professional services. As I say it’s essential support is targeted where most needed. We’ll certainly do all we can to continue to help through our advice and support, events and our lobbying at a national level through the British Chambers of Commerce.

I’d like to thank all our members and partners for your support for Dorset Chamber this year and we’ll continue to do our very best to support our business community as the UK continues its recovery from this terrible pandemic. As we draw to the end of end of 2020, businesses that trade with other countries in the EU have a narrowing window to prepare for the need to undertake Customs Declarations for both imports and exports. This is an area where Dorset Chamber can help, through our regular events and international trade training courses but also our qualified expert team, on hand to help where we can. This is an absolutely vital issue for businesses to ensure the free movement of goods across borders from January 1st, 2021, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need any help. I’m also delighted to announce that we are now able to offer information and advice regarding international trade through our Gateway service, funded by Dorset LEP and delivered by Dorset Chamber. If you are an existing exporter or considering export for the first time, free help and support is on hand so don’t hesitate to get in touch. Finally, I’d like to wish all in the business community a safe and peaceful Christmas. It’s been an extremely testing and worrying year for

Low Carbon Dorset programme Grant funding and technical support for Dorset organisations to reduce their carbon emissions will continue for another two years thanks to additional funding of over £5m secured by Dorset Council. The funding, provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), will extend the Council’s existing three-year Low Carbon Dorset programme by a further two years until 2023. Low Carbon Dorset is a programme of activities led by Dorset Council in partnership with Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which aims to boost Dorset’s low-carbon economy, and reduce its carbon footprint. Through Low Carbon Dorset, organisations across the county have been accessing free technical advice and grant funding for energy efficiency and renewable energy measures. Since its launch in April 2019, the programme has given out 91 grants worth over £2m. And provided free advice to over 100 Dorset based businesses, community groups and publicly funded organisations. This support has helped save just under 4,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. Dorset Council’s Sustainability Team Manager, Antony Littlechild, has been leading the bid for additional funding and said - “Uptake of this support over the past three years has been phenomenal with over 350 applications received. It has been especially encouraging to see the appetite from Dorset businesses to be more environmentally conscious. We are thrilled to be able to extend the support to even more organisations and projects.” The Council will continue to work in partnership with Dorset AONB to deliver the programme. By doing this, they hope to reduce Dorset’s emissions by a further 5,000 tonnes and help fund the installation of another 5 megawatts of renewable energy in Dorset over the next two years. Councillor Ray Bryan, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said of the recent news: “The Low Carbon Dorset programme has been hugely successful over the past three years, and we are over the moon that our bid for funds to secure its extension has been approved. The programme has, and will continue to be, a core component of the Council’s response to the Climate & Ecological Emergency. And these additional funds offer an exciting opportunity to support Dorset in its move towards a low-carbon future.” Organisations interested in seeking support from the programme can apply through the Low Carbon Dorset website: www.lowcarbondorset.org.uk/ 4

Lighthouse turns to Morebus to get Cinderella to her next ball It’s Christmas at Lighthouse and Cinderella is running late – who can we call to get her to the ball? It has to be Morebus, of course, and once again Lighthouse is teaming up with the local bus operator as its official travel partner in this year’s very special family Christmas show Happy Ever After. Written and directed by CBeebies’ Chris Jarvis, who also appears as Buttons, the story follows a host of well-known pantomime and children’s storybook characters as they help Cinderella get to her next ball. The show will also feature popular CBBC presenters Naomi Wilkinson and Ed Petrie with the acting and singing talents of rising stars Harry Winchester and Lauren Azania and the

dance talents of the locally based Steppin’ Out Academy. Lighthouse Chief Executive, Elspeth McBain says: “Lighthouse is delighted to be working with Morebus again, who are supporting our very special family Christmas show. It’s a great privilege to be at the heart of this community and, with the help of Morebus, we’re looking forward to a time when our audiences can come to the theatre – and when we can all live happy ever after.” With people across the region enduring a difficult year, Morebus is keen to ensure as many as possible are able to immerse themselves in

some make-believe holiday fun. “We have a long tradition of working with Lighthouse to help bring some festive cheer to Poole, and this year it’s even more important to ensure the show must go on,” says Morebus’ Joe Quinlan. “Chris Jarvis has written a wonderful story and we understand that many people will be celebrating Christmas on a shoestring this year, so we want to give them an extra treat to enjoy. “This is a double bonus because, not only will Cinderella go to the ball aboard our special on-stage bus, but people living in and around Poole will pay very little to revel in this wonderful spectacle. “As an established member of this community, we want to do our bit for the local economy this Christmas – and we hope people enjoy what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience here.”

Christmas show.

Happy Ever After is on sale now and runs from 18 December to 3 January. For tickets and information visit www.lighthousepoole.co.uk.

BV Dairy announces new £2 million expansion of North Dorset factory £750,000 grant funding secured to support development plans. Family owned Shaftesbury-based dairy manufacturer BV Dairy has announced the approval of £750,000 in funding from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), which will secure plans to create a major new facility at the company’s existing site. Construction of the new facility is expected to start in January 2021. The new facility is anticipated to create over 32 high-skilled jobs for the North Dorset rural community. Vaughan Heard, finance director of BV Dairy, commented: “We are delighted to secure the grant funding from RDPE, which will support us in our aim to provide increased long-term opportunity for local employees and security for farmers and rural workers in North Dorset.” The new facility for BV Dairy, continues the

major investment of the past four years including the new chill-store, a kefir bottling facility, and an automated process department, enabling the business to grow and diversify. Vaughan added: “We are extremely proud of the wonderful dairy industry heritage and legacy in North Dorset, and to play our part in bringing these quality products to a national and international audience. The additional capacity created by the new facility, together with the improvements in technology, allows us to court major new customers - which in turn creates more opportunity for our dairy farm suppliers.” The £750,000 grant from RDPE was secured by BV Dairy with the aid of the Dorset business community. Vaughan commented: “I would like to thank the RDPE for its generous grant

funding. I also wish to extend my sincere thanks to Simon Hoare (MP for North Dorset), our many Dorset suppliers, and Ian Girling, Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber of Commerce, for their collective support and assistance in helping BV Dairy to secure the necessary funding.” www.bvdairy.co.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham Oh my goodness the rollercoaster of 2020 continues! This time last month I was dramatising about my ‘heavy heart’ of ending my presidency…..in light of a second lockdown and the need for a robust AGM it has been postponed until early 2021. It’s the right thing to do but means a great new president waits in the wings and in the meantime you still have my monthly ramblings to deal with! In all seriousness, I remain committed to serve the Chamber team and our membership until it’s the right time to pass on the gong. And we continue to do a lot around policy, our stakeholder relationships, and a huge ‘Fit for the Future’ initiative which is growing by the day so additional time suits me fine! I have a lot to rant about this month. I am praying we get a decent Christmas, that the numbers affected by the virus will decline enough for the lockdown to end as was planned and businesses in all sectors can experience a proper ramp up to Christmas. We need to get out of this darned awful year with some kind of bang and after a few days off to get my head back into shape, I am enjoying planning ahead to 2021. I don’t know about you, but nothing is making me feel more ambitious right now than being held back! One reason why I feel ambitious is the visibility of change on the ground I have the good fortune to see as MD of Liz Lean PR and my roles in the Chamber world. Really great stuff is happening, and it will set us up for years to come. We have been watching Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole evolve the Kingland project in Kingland Crescent. This is L&G’s spearheading focus to reinvent the failing high streets of Britain and get shopping back on the radar, driven by creative and dynamic experiential-led retail. 10 independent small or start-up businesses are

starting to populate this funky revived space; from coffee roasters, to a fishmonger, surfboard shaping, interiors, and a gin bar, Kingland is the best thing to kick start retail in the area for years. And all in the middle of a pandemic….so things CAN get done! We have the world's fastest-growing online marketplace right here in Dorset, too. OnBuy reported an all-time record-breaking week with nearly 1.5 million users browsing the site, resulting in nearly £2.75 million in sales in the week commencing November 1 – an 837% increase in sales on the same period in 2019. This Dorset-grown company is beginning a worldwide scale-up into over 140 countries by the end of 2023, starting with 42 initial sites by year-end 2020. It is set to hire a further 22 new recruits by the end of the year, providing jobs for Dorset talent and attracting those from further afield to relocate. It has plans to open a Manchester office in early 2021 with 100 new jobs there also. All systems go for further growth whilst maintaining its ethical commitment to look after its sellers, unlike its unwieldy competitor! It’s yet another example of good news across our county in a challenging time. The time for youthful perspective and agility, open mindedness, experimentation, ballsy drive (whatever your age) is NOW. Do whatever it takes to get your energy where it needs to be (tough, I know as its been relentless!) and think a bit more ‘out there’. That segues nicely into my big message for this festive month and the dawn of a hopeful new year ahead. And it’s not the first time - I have banged this drum here before. How do we consider the opportunity for our young people as we recover from this crisis?

They are our economy’s future yet will have potentially the greatest challenges. What can we put in place now to give them the best chance to succeed? Enabling our young entrepreneurs to stay here, motivated and achieving, is a commitment we all need to make. Landlords sitting on expensive spaces need to work out ways (along with our government of course) to make them affordable to start-up businesses (think Kingland – offering 2 years rent and business rates free!). Affordable housing will continue to be an issue to allow young people to own their own homes; over inflated rents deter young people from giving Dorset a go. What are we going to do about it? As the pandemic makes Dorset more appealing as a lifestyle choice and real estate sales go through the roof, how can we mitigate the effect it is going to have on the next generation? The NIMBY’ism needs to be rationalised. Developers need to do the right thing. Anti-change attitudes need to be seen off. Sacrifices have to be made by us all and the narrative has to move on to something more positive and forward thinking. What is the alternative? OK rant over! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and you treasure the special people in your lives. We are extremely lucky to have them. Stay grateful every day for what we have and see you on the other side into the dawn of a whole new year! Seasonal virtual hugs, Liz x

Dorset’s next generation making their mark…. By Liz Willingham, President In this month’s President’s column I talk about our young people and how our commitment to them needs to be tactical, with practical change instigated now to help them meet the future challenges they will inevitably inherit as a consequence of CV19. Without some compromising and sacrificing from this current generation, we will give them no foundation whatsoever to move our economy forward into a vibrant future. In researching my article, I spoke to Dorset Chamber member Morgan Leadbitter from manufacturer, NuNet, who we know is passionate about what the next generation brings to the party. I felt this story so compelling and important I managed to persuade the Chamber team to give me an extra slot this month. Listening to Morgan talk about NuNet’s positive experience of nurturing apprentice, 20 year-old Owen, I was relieved to see that the right attitude to our young people exists already in our business more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

community. And there is much we can learn. “Dorset Chamber introduced us to Bournemouth & Poole College to help us find the right fit of apprenticeship. We may be a manufacturing company, but those aren’t the only skills we need. First and foremost we are a business. We decided to take on a Business Administration apprentice and Owen has become an integral part of the team since he joined,” enthused Morgan. Owen’s opportunity to spend time across the business and learn a variety of skills is placing him well to achieve a key role at NuNet moving forward. Morgan continues, “It became apparent very quickly that hearing our young people’s raw and honest views is refreshing to our business. They add real value and a new perspective that is important for future success. They are extremely capable, and we have to create opportunities for them now which will help get our economy back on track.”

Whether Owen decides to go on to university, steps to another organisation, or decides to stay and grow with NuNet after the completion of his apprenticeship, Morgan believes strongly that nurturing our young people and giving them a voice and opportunities right now helps us all. I wish Owen every success for the future and hope very much that we can keep this talent in Dorset as much as possible to see our economy thrive. www.nunetsolutions.co.uk www.thecollege.co.uk

CASE STUDY: Networking Works! Putting the ‘Secure’ in COVID-Secure:

How one Dorset Business

HELPED A COMMUNITY

When Chamber members Morgan Leadbitter Managing Direcor at Nunet Ltd and Stephen Nicholls Managing Director at Quadrant Safety attended one of Dorset Chamber’s fortnightly online Simply events, they were there to make new contacts and reconnect with existing ones. They were also there to make the most of the break out rooms which form part of the event – ‘round the table’ informal platforms managed by friendly facilitators for businesses to outline their products and services to a small group of others, before switching rooms. On this occasion, Stephen, whose Health, Safety and Environmental compliance company prides itself on ‘taking the complication out of compliance’, offered to help local businesses to ensure their premises are COVID secure. This struck a chord with Morgan who, in his capacity of Chairman at East Dorset Dockers Rugby Club – a voluntary community role - was in the process of discussing this vey matter with the Club’s committee. After the meeting Morgan got in touch with Stephen, who was engaged to provide a risk assessment, safe working procedure, and provide general advice. Advice was also provided with a risk assessment demanded by the local authority to repair a floodlight which required work at height operations. Stephen visited the premises to make an assessment and provide a bespoke risk assessment and Health and Safety audit. The result was a plan designed to be proportionate to

the Club’s needs, with achievable actions. The Club was successfully able to demonstrate Health and Safety compliance with physical and documentary proof of health and safety controls in place within the clubhouse, and to continue to stay open in a COVID-19 secure manner. The risk assessment was also reviewed and updated following the introduction of the ‘rule of 6’. Stephen said: “Under statutory Health and Safety Law, while organisations with fewer than 5 employees like East Dorset Dockers do not have to provide documentation for Health and Safety compliance such as risk assessments, it is always best practice that they do. If anything, under current circumstances, it is even more critical where premises are public facing. We take the hard work out of this aspect and provide clients with a full service. It was good to be working with a community club that took this aspect of its responsibility seriously too.” Morgan was more than happy with the service provided by Quadrant Safety. He said: “By bringing in a professional we were able to remove any ambiguity on how we should go about implementing the Government’s guidelines, which were open to interpretation, depending on the setting, and subject to change. As a public space used by our wider membership, we did not want to leave anything to chance. By using the services of Quadrant Safety, all our bases were more than covered; the committee was unanimously behind the proposals and we were able to

present the final action plan to our members with confidence. We were also really happy with the personal as well as professional service. The ongoing refurbishment project and changes from Government meant we did have some questions arising, and Stephen was always very happy to help.” Now the two members have connected, they are talking about taking the relationship further, with the potential for Stephen to support Nunet Ltd with ISO9001 compliance implementation. Nunet’s, core businesses is specialising in bespoke ring binders, folders, boxes and wallets, but it also diversified during the pandemic to provide PPE for NHS staff, and latterly developed affordable desk shield solutions for staff to work safely under current COVID guidance. Acquiring ISO9001 would enable the company to expand its reach and bid for contracts requiring the international standard. And it all started with a little online networking…

We take the hard work out of this aspect and provide clients with a full service. It was good to be working with a community club that took this aspect of its responsibility seriously too.

TUI launches winter 2021/22 and summer 2022 holidays from Bournemouth Airport •

Six destinations now on sale for winter 2021

14 destinations on offer for summer 2022

Reintroduction of three routes for summer 2022

More demand expected for 4 & 5-star allinclusive hotels with private pools or villas

TUI UK has put winter 2021/22 holidays from Bournemouth Airport on sale and will launch summer 2022 from 5th November, with thousands of free kids’ places, low deposits from £75 per person and £0 deposit on direct debit bookings made online on offer. This comes as 86% of customers surveyed in September said they expect to have gone on holiday again by next summer - reinforcing the growing appetite for future travel post Covid-19. With on-going travel corridor uncertainty for some regular favourites this winter, those craving sunshine during the coldest months have already booked for next winter, with strong demand in particular for Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria so far from the six different

destinations on sale from Bournemouth Airport. With 57% of customers saying they expect to book a Mediterranean beach holiday for 2021, TUI anticipates greater demand for summer 2022 as people want to ‘make up’ for not being able to go away this year. So far, Greece is the standout destination of choice based on current bookings for next summer, with Turkey and Egypt also popular, and patterns indicate these trends could continue into 2022. TUI’s summer 2022 programme will see Bournemouth Airport welcome back three popular routes to Dalaman in Turkey, Heraklion in Crete and Ibiza in the Balearic Islands. There will also be four weekly flights to Mediterranean favourite, Majorca and twice-weekly services to Corfu and Rhodes in Greece. TUI is seeing an upward trend in 4 and 5-star all-inclusive hotel bookings for next summer, with over 40% of customers surveyed expressing this preference. This includes hotels which offer the ‘best of both worlds’ with villas or room options with private pools and accommodation as families in particular seek to continue to feel

safe in their ‘bubble’. TUI will be offering 233 different options in 155 hotels for this growing category in summer 2021 and expects this trend to continue for summer 2022. In the same vein, 18% of customers surveyed said they would look to book a villa holiday with car hire included, making social distancing easier on holiday. TUI is offering 150 villas with flights and car hire included for summer 2021 and summer 2022 in Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Portugal, Italy and Florida. Richard Sofer, Commercial & Business Development Director at TUI said: “Our latest customer survey and booking patterns for next summer indicate that the great British public are looking forward to future holidays even more so as they may have been unable to take one this year. This is why we have launched our future holiday programmes through to the end of October 2022, so that families and couples alike can plan ahead to next year and beyond to make informed choices about what will make their perfect holiday from the wide range we have on offer.” Steve Gill, Managing Director of Bournemouth Airport said: “The launch of TUI’s winter 2021 and summer 2022 programmes gives passengers the opportunity to book with confidence and look forward to a well-deserved break. The reintroduction of three popular routes, as well as the four weekly flights to Majorca in summer 2022 is fantastic news for our airport and our region, with air travel and international connectivity critical to both. We welcome TUI’s announcement and look forward to seeing a return to passenger growth, with a clear demand for travel post-COVID-19, and new and returning routes offering passengers a great choice of destinations.”

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Directors beware - the suspension of wrongful trading has ended What does this mean for directors if their business becomes insolvent? What should they do? In March this year, the Business Secretary, Alok Sharma suspended wrongful trading provisions so that directors could continue to trade through the Coronavirus pandemic, even if they were facing insolvency, without the concern that they would be investigated for wrongful trading. This suspension ended on 30th September 2020. As set out in section 214 of the Insolvency Act, 1986, wrongful trading occurs when companies continue to carry on trading when they are insolvent – simply defined as being unable to pay their debts when they fall due. The Insolvency Act made it an offence for a company director to continue to trade if they are aware that their business is unavoidably heading towards liquidation. This means that directors should not continue trading whilst insolvent to the detriment of the company’s creditors or they will fall foul of the wrongful trading provisions, which can lead to a director being found personally liable. Now that directors are no longer protected by the suspension of the wrongful trading rules, even though the pandemic is far from over, it is essential that they are aware of the steps they need to follow if their business becomes insolvent. When does a company become insolvent? It sounds obvious, and it ought to be the case that all directors should know. In our experience, however, especially in smaller owner-managed businesses, this is not always known or fully understood. Knowing the signs means that action can be taken, and the earlier the better. Here are the main reasons for insolvency: Cash flow insolvency. When a company cannot pay its debts on time, it is cashflow insolvent. If it continues to trade, the director(s) could be personally liable under wrongful trading rules. Balance sheet insolvency. This is when a company’s liabilities exceed its assets. To be able to know this, directors must have accurate and up to date management accounts. Creditor Enforcement. This occurs when a creditor enforces their rights against the company, usually for unpaid debts, and the enforcement is not satisfied. Statutory Demand. If a statutory demand is served on a company by a creditor, and the debt is not satisfied or secured to the creditor’s satisfaction, or legitimately disputed within 21 days, then the company is insolvent. The key issue is that if a director of a company becomes aware that any of the points above have been reached, then the company is insolvent and action must be taken because the interests of the company’s creditors now come first. Continuing to trade in the full knowledge that any (some or all) of these points have been reached will be seen as wrongful trading. This is where personal liability comes in. How can a director of a company be found personally liable? When a company becomes insolvent, it can often attract an investigation by the Insolvency Service, which can result in personal liability. The main ways that a director can be found personally more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

liable are: If the director allows the company to continue to trade when there is no reasonable prospect of the company avoiding an insolvent liquidation or administration. If the directors fail to take every possible step after this point has been reached to minimise any further potential losses to the company’s creditors. If the company carries on trading with the intent to defraud its creditors or the creditors of any other person. If, because of breaching their duties as a director they are found guilty of misfeasance. What should a company director do to avoid Wrongful Trading and Personal Liability? As of 1st October 2020, wrongful trading is no longer suspended (and ignorance of this fact is no defence), so in order to reduce the chance of being investigated for wrongful trading if insolvency strikes, we advise that directors should: Proceed with caution if they notice that their company is having financial difficulties. Quickly raise concerns about the company’s finances with their accountants or fellow directors. Seek advice from a professional, such as an insolvency practitioner, as soon as possible, to limit their personal liability if insolvency does strike. This will help to prove that they were acting in the best interests of the company by seeking advice. Make sure that all decisions that are made throughout any period of financial difficulty are properly documented and that regular board meetings are held with issued minutes. These are always asked for in an investigation and if they are not there or properly documented, it does not look good. Talk to us if you are worried about wrongful trading Given the financial shock that the pandemic has given many thousands of businesses, and the fact the suspension of Wrongful Trading has ended (even though the pandemic is not over), it is likely that we will see a sharp increase in directors being investigated for it at insolvency. If you are concerned about the financial position of your company or would like to discuss wrongful trading further please contact Clive Fortis or Elaine Wilkins at our Bournemouth office. www.antonybatty.com

KINGLAND has arrived Poole’s new shopping district is set to rejuvenate the town centre, as L&G announces its latest retailers on Kingland Crescent. Kingland Crescent creates unique retail opportunities for some of the county’s most innovative, entrepreneurial businesses Development is underway to transform Poole’s Kingland Crescent into a thriving new high street, with the first of ten new retailers set to open their doors in the coming weeks. The regeneration of Kingland Crescent is part of an ambitious and unique initiative by the owners of Dolphin Shopping Centre, Legal & General Investment Management Real Assets (Legal & General). Owing to changes in consumer trends, the UK retail sector has undergone a seismic shift in recent years. Traditional retailers have had to respond or risk being left behind. As part of an ambitious national strategy to reinvent retail, Legal & General is committed re-imagining its retail assets, future-proofing them for the long-term. The redevelopment of Kingland Crescent is the first step in Legal & General’s long-term plans for the area which will see innovation and investment in the neighbouring Dolphin Shopping Centre. As part of these ambitious plans to reinvent Poole’s retail offering, Legal & General is working with local independent businesses to deliver a tailored retail solution that works for them. Legal & General has committed to provide 10 retail units to start-up and independent businesses with no rent or business rates to be paid for two years. This is to kick-start an unparalleled shopping experience which brings together the cream of Dorset’s most innovative young retail entrepreneurs in one exciting environment in the town centre. 20

December 2020 | Dorset Business Focus

Confirmed retailers set to open at Kingland Crescent next month, include: • HUX Custom Surfboards and Café • Greenslade Fishmonger • Grounded Coffee – A coffee shop with an on-site roaster Confirmed retailers due to open in the new year are: • ånd Fragrance – A flagship store for renowned perfumer Simon Constantine (previously of Lush Cosmetics) • PEN Gallery • Restored Retro – A mid-century modern restored furniture shop • Wild Roots – Houseplants and interiors specialists • Viper Gin – A gin bar and shop Denz Ibrahim, Head of Retail and Futuring at LGIM Real Assets, said: “Our town centres have always played a huge role in how people live, work and play and tomorrow the focus will be on how we successfully blur the boundaries of these environments to curate spaces which reconnect people with place. As owners, investors, urbanists and creatives we have a responsibility to ensure our retail places are future-proofed and dynamic, giving our partners and customers what they want; social connectivity and discovery. “Our ambitious plans for The Dolphin Centre and Kingland will deliver a market-leading curated series of environments jam-packed with hand-picked brands, programmed events and content all sourced from the locale all with amazing people, stories and products. We believe, to make retail places relevant and to support UK high streets, we must focus on localism, /company/dorset-chamber/

the public realm, services and ever-changing programmability. “Our chosen brands and retailers are ambitious, bold and creative, supporting our mission to create a future ready Poole town centre.” Executive Creative Director of Kingland, Hollie Newton, added: “I couldn't be prouder of everyone involved in the Kingland project. There's no reason why our high streets have to look so sad, Dorset has enough brilliant entrepreneurial companies to fill the town centre 10 times over, and Kingland is an opportunity to showcase a selection of the very best the county has to offer. Young people who have taken the pandemic as an opportunity to rethink, grow and even start new endeavours. “Our priority for Kingland has always been to create a high street that people actually want to go to. It might look achingly cool, but in many ways it's a return to the high streets of the past alongside places to eat and drink, Kingland will be a place to shop for weekly groceries (expect another shop announcement soon), the best local design, and even perfume, that Dorset has to offer. “Long live local.” Within the next 12 months, further units are set to open at the brand-new high street as part of the next phase of the scheme. Legal & General is to also develop a street market at Kingland which will comprise 20 independent vendors. Additionally, plans are already in progress to bring an annual programme of 300 local events to the new retail space.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS

Setting sights on new opportunities John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has been highlighted for its Brexit positivity in a national campaign for the Government. The Christchurch-based firm featured as a case study to encourage other businesses across the country to step up preparations for the UK’s departure from the EU. It was part of an initiative to promote the Government’s ‘Brexit Transition – Time is Running Out’ awareness campaign with regional media nationwide. REIDsteel Managing Director Simon Boyd said: “We are incredibly positive about Brexit, not only for our business but also for the UK economy. “International trade is in the DNA of our company from its birth over a century ago to the modern day. “The great prize of Brexit is the freedom to make our own laws, set our own regulations and, importantly, strike our own trade deals on the world stage. “With or without a trade deal with the European Union, Brexit will allow us to build new trading relationships around the world while setting our own rules and regulations at home.” Simon, who is a member of the CBI’s manufacturing council, added: “I believe it is a tremendous opportunity to restore British Standards to their rightful position as a hallmark of excellence worldwide while giving a shot in the arm to British manufacturing. “We will be seeking to invest as a company and take full advantage of the benefits that Brexit will bring, which allow us to improve productivity, create jobs, grow our business, and ultimately

boost the economy and Great Britain’s place in the world.” REIDsteel is a Dorset Chamber Platinum Business Partner which has exported to more than 140 countries to date. A £30m turnover company, it directly employs 130 people in Christchurch and at peak times provides work for 400 people through subcontracting. REIDsteel’s unique selling point is its ability to provide all services and virtually all elements of a building under one roof, from conception to completion for steel frame and envelope solutions. Unlike most structural steel firms, it designs, manufactures, supplies and constructs highquality steel buildings of all kinds – including

cladding, glazing, louvres, curtain walling, industrial doors, staircases, bleachers, metal decking and mezzanine floors. REIDsteel has used British made products for the majority of its history but set that in stone last December when it made British Steel its primary supplier. At the same time it became the first contractor to sign the UK Steel Charter, which was launched by trade body UK Steel with the support of British Steel, to encourage more firms to buy British. For more support about Brexit visit the Dorset Chamber website at www.dorsetchamber. co.uk and gov.uk/transition.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS

Strategic Merger of Dorset Chamber members, ITSB & Quad Vision Bournemouth-based IT company, ITSB, has completed a strategic merger with a leading-edge Audio-Visual firm in a move to strengthen its service proposition to clients in a deal that was concluded just ahead of the second national lockdown. Dorset Chamber Partners ITSB, which manages IT solutions, cloud infrastructure and IT Security for business, education and charitable sector clients, has merged with Wimborne-based Quad Vision, an Audio-Visual specialist in the field of digital display systems such as video conferencing and digital signage screens, as well as COVID-19 solutions such as LCD hand sanitiser displays and contactless thermometer displays. Quad Vision now sits as the Audio and Visual arm of ITSB and this consolidation allows both firms to bolster not only their services and product portfolio but also their technical expertise, specifically within dedicated Video conferencing room capabilities. Lee Dredge, CEO of ITSB, said: “Since the first national lockdown we experienced a significant increase in demand for our services, predominantly implementing technologies like Microsoft 365™ and Microsoft Teams™ which allow for productive remote working. Sanjay Saini at Quad Vision and I have been professional friends for many years and our merger discussions started some time ago, before the pandemic hit. We recognised that by joining forces we can strengthen our service proposition to existing and future customer bases, plus creating the ability to deliver professional conference room solutions via Microsoft Teams™ “Despite the current climate both ITSB and Quad Vision are on target for 30 per cent growth this financial year, demonstrating that businesses across the region see the importance of investing in technology to support them through challenging times.” Sanjay Saini, Managing Director at Quad Vision, added: “We are delighted to be joining forces with ITSB and to work collaboratively on projects. This merger enables us to propel the growth of all services, continue to provide high-end and large installs to clients, as well as specialist bespoke solutions. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

“We anticipate this move will benefit our businesses in terms of growth, strength in numbers and the ability to complement each other’s products much more closely. This is a decision born from aligned synergies and not necessity, together propelling our businesses to the next level.” As a result of the merger, employees of the businesses will benefit from further career development and product training. ITSB and Quad Vision are both a part of the TECHNEDs Investment LLP family who handled the high-level structuring of

the strategic merger. TECHNEDs’ own Simon Mewett will remain as Chairman to both ITSB & Quad Vision, with Iain McKenzie serving as Non-Executive Director. Lee Dredge will remain as CEO to both organisations and Sanjay Saini will become CTO.

Phenomenal growth in digital education expected in 2021 From inception in March 2019 and the launch at the Hampshire Business Show in October 2019, Multi award winning Aspire4Business Academy has seen phenomenal business growth in 2020. Beverley Poole CEO said “I was fortunate enough to have online learning experience having worked with one of the first multi-media companies in the UK in the 90s. I decided to bring this experience, education and blended learning techniques to a business model and the idea of Aspire4business Academy was born.” Beverley went on to say “The original business plan offered specialists and trainers a whole new way to collaborate and develop business reach by hosting their skills as eLearning on the Academy platform. Beverley added “During my networking events and business breakfasts, it was clear from the presentations I was hearing that I had to come up with a way to enable entrepreneurial people to share their incredible knowledge.” Hosting business training rooms and schools at a fraction of the cost of many of the DIY platforms, Academy has onboarded 65 new pieces of work this year alone. From significant investment Beverley developed the new and popular Membership platform to enable a different way for Academy

clients to develop their business with monthly programmes. Clients also have access to a Brand Ambassador and Affiliate programme. More recently the ‘behind the scenes’ outsourced Learning and Development area for corporates, charities and franchises was launched, which allows hosting for L&D, skills and mandatory training, onboarding and policies and procedures files all linking back to client websites. A number of UK businesses, educational establishments and training companies are now trialling or engaging the platform for their own eLearning programmes and companies such as Vissensa, GC Youth People Index, A Better Place to Work, Digital Circus and Mixxa all choosing to host their training schools with this new and exciting platform. Local business owner Barbara Cox said “I’m a fan” having been supported to develop her own academy online. Academy is set for substantial growth again in 2021 and having secured the UK distribution rights of 250 training courses for New Zealand specialists ‘Learning Planet’ offering short video training to corporate teams, Academy will have a range of commercial training to add to the already incredible range of courses being

released in 8 parts over the next few months. Aspire4Business Academy has been successful in marketing the eLearning programmes for a wide range of clients including Leadership, Coaching, Wellbeing, Lifestyle, Hospitality, Training and Education with a focused national and international marketing campaign planned for launch early next year too. Finally, Academy is proud to announce a Bronze award for Education and Mentoring at the SOStar awards in 2020 following on from the Gold award in 2019 for Innovation and Future Proofing. In the South Coast Tech Awards Aspire4Business Academy were finalists in two of their categories this year including most exciting tech Start-up company and also Tech company of the year, sponsored by BDBPitman and Blake Morgan LLP with The Business Magazine. To discuss getting your digital eLearning, education or corporate L&D online, the Aspire4BusinessAcademy team will be happy to discuss your business development needs. www.aspire4businessacademy.com

Cash Support for Businesses

Calling all innovative businesses:

credits scheme, which has granted relief of £26.9bn in tax relief since the scheme began and is much broader in scope than many are aware. The scheme is most popular for an annual cashback, even when a business has been in loss and non-tax paying. A business that incurred costs for unique innovation activities, may be entitled to up to 33% of those costs as a cashback. The average SME tax credit is £53k for one year, often in the form of a cash injection straight to the bottom line, and potentially double that amount for a first time claimant. It could be a lifeline for businesses; it has helped many fund their payroll or other key costs over the years. There is no dictate as to how cash received from the scheme is used and cash benefits are often paid as quickly as one month after a claim is filed. Some businesses have claimed small amounts via a DIY claim or a

claim compiled by their accountant, however, there is almost always additional cash benefit available, based on a technical appraisal of the innovation activities. Now may be the best time ever to check whether the business has been receiving the full entitlement. For a business that has already received benefit, it can pay to have a further review as the amount is often much less than they were entitled to, without them realising it. This invariably happens when businesses believe this claim opportunity is an accountancy workstream, whereas it is really about technology. A remote technical appraisal is available during pandemic restrictions, to check eligibility for any registered trading company that has been established for over one year. For more information visit www.businesscashenabler.co.uk

Improve cashflow with government support. Claim back up to 33% of costs incurred on innovation over the past two years. With uncertainty over revenues and a looming cash flow crisis for many businesses, there may be a welcome cash injection awaiting for businesses in any sector that have been innovating in the past two years. Many businesses are clearly concerned about the impact the pandemic will have on the future of

their business. What they may not realise, is that regardless of their current trading situation, they may be able to claim back a percentage of costs incurred over the past two accounting periods, normally the prior 2 years. Help may be available via HMRC’s Research & Development (R&D) tax

Workwear Pro Direct are Gifting Back Charitable corporate giving is not just the work of the multinational corporates as proven by Identity, the parent company of soon to be launched Work Wear Pro Direct. Since 2017, the Chard-based supplier of branded clothing, workwear and promotional event materials has donated 2.5% of its total sales value to charity. To date, over £9,000 has been donated through the ongoing Gift Back scheme benefitting several charities, one of whom includes local charity the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Gift Back was created by Identity’s Managing Director, Martyn Perry as he wanted to ensure that the success of his business had a positive effect on the wider community. Participating in Gift Back is free. It does not cost the customer any extra yet gives them the feel-good of knowing that their purchase is creating positive social impact. Each time they buy 2.5% of the total order value automatically drops into the Gift Back pot (after an initial £150 qualifying spend). An update to the scheme this year means that the primary Gift Back beneficiary for 2020/21 will be The Amber Foundation. This

charity supports vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to move out of homelessness. However, if another charity refers a customer to Work Wear Pro Direct and they make a purchase the charity that referred them will receive the 2.5% donation. Any charities that would like to know more about the Gift Back referral scheme should contact Martyn Perry at 0800 0239 290. Launching soon www.workwearprodirect.com

Grant giving charity helps grow sexual abuse support service Talbot Village Trust donated £10,000 to Acts Fast to help the charity provide an increased level of support to children and families throughout lockdown and beyond. Between April and July, the charity took on 14 new clients, in addition to the 45 already in progress. Many of the individuals that the charity helped were already vulnerable and isolated, and the lockdown exaggerated this. Acts Fast needed to provide extended support outside of its usual operating hours to cover evenings and weekends, in order to cope with the increase in demand for its services. The Trust’s donation enabled the organisation to fund this increase in operation and allowed staff’s wages to be supplied. Acts Fast provides support, resources and counselling services for children and their 40

families who have been exposed to sexual violence. Commenting on the support Acts Fast received from the Trust, Chief Executive, Mandy Gulliver, said: “We are eternally grateful for the generous donation which has enabled us to continue providing crucial emotional support during this difficult time to our already fragile clients.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee at Talbot Village Trust, added: “I would like to thank Mandy and her team for providing such necessary support during these difficult times. “The lockdown has greatly impacted our communities in so many ways and it was imperative that we supported as many charities as we could with our COVID-19 Fund, to ensure an increase in services could be met.” Talbot Village Trust’s COVID-19 Support Fund was launched

Sales of £1m-plus homes jump Sales of £1m-plus homes have surged since lockdown as affluent buyers look for more space and lifestyle change, with two-thirds more deals agreed in the past four months than in the same period last year. An average of 868 £1m-plus sales have been agreed each week since the beginning of June, 66% higher than the weekly average of 522 over the same period in 2019, new data from Savills and TwentyCi show. Despite the key spring market weeks being all but lost to the lockdown, when sales fell to just 69 in the week ending 19 April, a total of 23,000 sales were agreed in the first three quarters of 2020, 16% higher than in 2019. Lucian Cook, Savills head of residential research, who ran the analysis, says, “This points to a rebalancing of the market between London and the rest of the country. Whereas sales in London rose by 4% in the first nine months of the year, they are up 27% across the rest of the UK, albeit London still accounts for over four in 10 44

sales with a £1m-plus price tag. The South West has seen one of the biggest surges in demand, with sales rising 38% to 2,002. Dorset has seen particularly strong demand, with a 69% increase in sales. “Lifestyle relocation has been a big theme in the market since lockdown began to ease, and this is very clearly reflected in the numbers,” says Ashley Rawlings of Savills Wimborne. “Relocation and staycation locations such as Dorset (+69%), Wiltshire (+66%), the Cotswolds (+94%), South Oxfordshire (+78%) and Cornwall (+66%) and have been standout performers. And for London leavers looking for a less dramatic lifestyle shift, and a more accessible commute, places such as Tunbridge Wells (+58%), Guildford (+42%) and Winchester /company/dorset-chamber/

(+40%) have proved popular.” “By the year end we now expect the number of £1m-plus sales agreed to exceed 2019 volumes - a performance nobody could have anticipated in the depths of lockdown,” says Cook. “That said, recent evidence suggests fewer high value homes are now coming to the market, suggesting we may be hitting a high plateau. “For many the challenge is now in getting deals through to completion by Christmas, after which point eyes will be on beating the March 31 stamp duty holiday deadline in order to benefit from the maximum £15,000 saving for those buying at this end of the market.” www.savills.co.uk @DorsetChamber

‘Move Your Mind’ - Get active and improve your wellbeing this January In the likelihood that the festive season will be a very different experience this year, mental health charity Dorset Mind are encouraging people to start planning a positive start to 2021. ‘Move Your Mind,’ is a new and exciting challenge due to take place in January 2021 aiming to encourage people to start the New Year by getting active and completing at least 30 minutes of any form of physical activity EVERY day throughout the month. By taking part in some form of physical movement every day, people will also improve their wellbeing at a time when many people often experience a low point in the calendar. This challenge is open to individuals, teams, schools and businesses and people can get active in any way they want, making it suitable for anyone who wants to plan a positive start to the year with a change in their usual routine or with a bigger challenge for themselves or a team. 2020 saw a strong community feel as people pulled together through the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s this ‘togetherness’ that ‘Move Your Mind’ hopes to continue by encouraging people to sign up together and help each other through the notoriously tough first month of the year. Hannah Garrett, Events and Fundraising Coordinator for Dorset Mind comments: ‘Here at Dorset Mind we know that regular physical activity has positive benefits

on mental health. It can help to manage stress levels, reduce anxiety and make you feel happier. ‘We wanted to create an activity-based event that was made for the people, by the people, and ‘Move Your Mind’ has had the community at the heart of it since the beginning when we created a focus group to shape the campaign. Our hope is that by signing up, participants will encourage each other to become more active and therefore more mentally healthy. It also gives Dorset Mind a great opportunity to run a fundraising event that shouldn’t be affected by lockdown restrictions. Anyone can take part in any location, which makes it the perfect challenge in such uncertain times. And for our charity, this will raise vital donations which will enable us to deliver support locally to people that need it.’ Marianne Storey, CEO of Dorset Mind adds: ‘Getting active, connecting, learning, taking notice and giving back are the 5 Ways to Wellbeing that were researched and developed by the New Economics Foundation. Taking part in ‘Move Your Mind ‘is a fun way to follow these evidence-based steps and improve your mental wellbeing. Getting active also gives people opportunities to connect with others taking part. We hope people will enjoy learning new ideas to increase their fitness whilst fundraising for local

mental health. By practicing the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, we hope our participants will feel happier and notice an improved mental and physical health too.” Dr Andy Mayers, Patron for Dorset Mind and Principal Academic at Bournemouth University said: ‘I am delighted to see how this important campaign will address both physical and mental health. We know that January can be a challenging time and may be more so this year following what is likely to be an unusual Christmas. Getting active is so important to maintain wellbeing. Yet again, Dorset Mind is leading from the front to help promote good mental health in the community right across Dorset. This campaign ticks so many boxes by raising awareness about mental health, generating more income for Dorset Mind to provide services, and helping us all keep healthy.’ Registration for ‘Move Your Mind’ opens on 27th October. Everyone that signs up will receive a digital information pack that includes plenty of information and guidance to help you to get started, exercise safely and fundraise for Dorset Mind. Participants will also be encouraged to join a private Facebook community group to share their stories, efforts and progress – which will also help encourage and inspire other people taking part. If you want to get active and take part in the challenge, visit the Dorset Mind website www. dorsetmind.uk/move-your-mind. To help encourage participants to fundraise for Dorset Mind, the charity is also appealing to local businesses to help sponsor the challenge; to help promote it and to donate fundraising incentives.

Cyber crooks poised to get greedy at this time Cyber-attacks are poised to rise sharply this Christmas as criminals look to exploit a ‘perfect storm’ of circumstances, a leading expert has warned. Matt Horan from C3IA Solutions, based in Poole, Dorset, says homes as well as businesses should be on their guard. More internet-linked gadgets than ever before will be given as presents this year, and Covid fears will continue to be utilised by criminals. With fewer people going away for holiday, and lockdowns meaning fewer homes will be empty for burglars to target, the thieves might change their modi operendi and target victims online instead. Scams, phishing emails, smishing messages, fake websites and hacking into homes’ wf-fi and gadgets are all real and genuine threats. With virtual assistance such as ‘Alexa’ remaining popular and also open to attack the festive season could be a bumper one for cyber criminals. Matt said: “We have seen since the start of Covid that criminals have migrated online, partly because they and their traditional victims were in lockdown. “With more people working from home it opened up extra opportunities for cyber criminals. “They were also quick to play on peoples’ Covid fears by selling quack remedies and tests. “These trends remain, but now Christmas in on the horizon and will present many further opportunities for crooks. “Criminals will be working hard during the festive period to relieve you of your hard-earned money. But there are precautions you can take. “When shopping online take time to check the website that you are visiting. “Does it look correct? Is the grammar and spelling right? Is it a secure website with ‘https://’ at the address header? have you used it before? “Watch out for emails arriving in your ‘inbox’ claiming to be from reputable retailers, offering you bargains and discounts that seem too good to be true. “Rather than click on the link they send you, use a reputable search engine to find 46

Recycling firm Eco lands council waste contract A Dorset-based organic recycling specialist has won a multi-millionpound waste handling contract with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP). their website – the offer will still be there if it is genuine. “Remember never to share any personal information with untrusted sites or individuals. “Keep information on social media sites to a minimum, review your profile and remove any data that could be used to allow someone to impersonate you, such as your address and date of birth. “Check photos you have posted and what is in the background - an image of your bankcard showing the long number or a calendar showing when you are likely to be away are things that can be exploited by criminals. “When paying for gifts and presents on-line, set up additional security controls so that you receive notifications on your smart phone if you make a payment. “That way if anyone has obtained your card details you will immediately know if it is being used. “Ideally pay with a credit card and that way any fraudulent purchases should be able to be refunded. “And when you receive internet-linked gadgets for Christmas – this year video door bells are popular – ensure you take precautions. “It is possible to easily hack into these types of devices, which could cause huge harm. “So secure you wi-fi network with a strong password and if you control gadgets with an app then make sure you have a different password for each one. “Christmas should be a time of fun and happiness for the law abiding and not a time for cyber criminals to get fat.”

The exclusive four-year deal, with an option to extend to up to ten years, tasks Eco Sustainable Solutions with processing all the organic wastes generated in the BCP region. The annual amounts specified include 21,000 tonnes of green or garden waste, 8,000 tonnes of wood, 4,750 tonnes of food waste and 4,500 tonnes of organic rubbish collected through street sweeping. Eco will divert all the materials away from landfill by recycling them into compost, mulch, soil, turf and green energy such as low-carbon biofuels, electricity and heat. The processing will be done at Eco’s main, 14-acre site in Parley and its anaerobic digestion plant at Piddlehinton near Dorchester. Eco’s Commercial Director Peter Hardy said: “The contract is a further vote of confidence in our 25 years of waste management services here in Dorset. “It’s tremendous news for us but more importantly the people of the BCP region who want reassurance that recycling and environmental protection are top priorities at this critical time for the planet.” On a visit to the Parley site, Councillor Mark Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Cleansing and Waste for BCP Council, said: “I am so pleased that this organics treatment contract is the first large waste contract that has been let since the formation of BCP Council. It continues our relationship with Eco Sustainable Solutions, a local company that will significantly help meet our carbon-neutral ambitions to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. “The company’s composting, anaerobic digestion and biomass technology will now treat 38,000 tonnes of our garden waste, wood waste, food waste and street sweepings for the next four to ten years. “BCP Council already recycles, composts or re-uses nearly 54% of its waste, and this contract’s flexibility will allow us to expand and build on this in the future over the whole conurbation.” Eco already processes around 250,000 tonnes of organic materials each year. In 2019 the firm retained a long-standing contract with Dorset Council Waste Services, previously Dorset Waste Partnership, for the handling of the county’s organic waste.

Canford Park to bring significant economic investment and job opportunities in Poole Poole based W H White is bringing forward a significant investment for a sustainable residential led development at Canford Park, located north of Bearwood, Poole. The proposals will provide a significant economic stimulus of regional importance and can be a key element of the area’s economic strategy to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. The planning application will provide a range of economic benefits, including: A total of 695 new homes, with a focus on family houses, rather than flats. A new community hub providing shops, everyday services, business start-up units, and community facilities The creation of a wide range of jobs, including those through construction and permanent jobs created within the local centre. Increased expenditure in the local area resulting from new residents spending in the local retail, hospitality and services sectors, especially at the outset whilst residents are furnishing their new homes. £5m towards local infrastructure through Community Infrastructure Levy payments, which many town centre developments have avoided. Circa £8.5m of Section 106

contributions towards school places and doctor’s services. As well as the £13.5m expected from CIL and S106 contributions, a significant financial uplift will be due for BCP Council resulting from Council Tax and New Home Bonus payments. 40% affordable homes, rarely achieved on town centre sites in Poole, or Dorset as a whole, and meaning circa 278 new affordable homes for local people. A 60-bed care home within the central community hub, ensuring Canford Park is a healthy and vibrant intergenerational community The phased delivery of a 44-hectare beautiful Country Park, with 5,000 new trees planted to date, and public access to the River Stour. A planning application was submitted in March 2019 which reflects, as fully as possible, the allocation for the development of the site in the adopted Poole Local Plan. W H White is delighted to confirm that Taylor Wimpey, one of the UKs most respected housing developers, will be developing the site, subject to planning permission. Taylor Wimpey is keen to move forward with the development of this important site at the earliest opportunity. @DorsetChamber

New Antimicrobial Coating Protects Against Covid-19 PHC Practice oil spill drill As part of their on-going commitment to managing incidents in the Harbour, Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) simulated a major oil spill to test their capability and processes should they need to respond to a tier 2 hydrocarbon spill. The major emergency exercise, which PHC carries out every three years, was facilitated by their contracted oil spill response partners Adler & Allan. This year’s scenario involved an articulated lorry recently disembarked from a ferry, colliding with a 3,000l waste oil bulk storage tank causing waste oil to spread over the quay and head towards the water. PHC works in collaboration with more than 15 organisations, including the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Environment Agency, Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council (BCP) and Perenco to carry out these exercises. However, current COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing requirements meant this year’s task was held online for the first time. As part of the Harbour Commissioner’s response to the practical element of the exercise, several booms were deployed from RoRo 3. In the event of a real oil spill situation, these booms would prevent any oil from flowing into environmentally sensitive areas. A skimmer was also used to demonstrate how the oil would be captured. Although a major oil spill in the Harbour is unlikely, it is important that the risk is assessed and that a plan that has been approved by the MCA is in place to respond to such an incident, especially in such an environmentally sensitive area as Poole Harbour. Captain Brian Murphy, Harbour Master said, “Our Oil Spill Response Plan sets out the contingency arrangements for responding to an actual or threatened oil pollution incident within Poole Harbour”. “These exercises are vitally important in ensuring that our highly trained personnel are prepared to deal with such unfortunate circumstances professionally and swiftly, helping us to minimise any risk to health, wildlife, the environment and to ensure business continuity”. Simulated exercises such as this provide the Harbour community with the confidence that Poole Harbour Commissioners will be prepared in the event of a major oil spill in Poole Harbour. Captain Murphy added, “Testing our plan against various scenarios helps us to gain experience, be more prepared and allow us to continually improve our processes”. “Holding this year’s exercise online to conform with the current restrictions in place due to COVID-19 also gave us the perfect opportunity to test our resilience as an organisation”. www.phc.co.uk more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Infection control specialist DDC Dolphin has launched a new antimicrobial spray-on coating to protect surfaces from bacteria and viruses, including SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19. DDC Dolphin’s Hygenex Recoat antimicrobial coating system is also effective against other coronaviruses, MRSA, E. Coli, Salmonella, Legionella, Influenza, fungi and yeasts. Hygenex Recoat protects surfaces for up to six months between applications – helping to safeguard care homes, hospitals, schools, universities, businesses, buses, trains and other public places. The new system works by creating an infection-killing barrier on a wide range of surfaces including stainless steel, aluminium, copper, zinc, chrome, most plastics, glass, ceramics, wood, stickers and foil. Infections allowed to remain on surfaces spread alarmingly quickly. Tests by researchers at Imperial College London showed how viral DNA on a hospital bed rail was spread to 18 other surfaces in 10 hours. These surfaces included door handles, chairs in a waiting room, children’s toys and books in a play area. This is a serious risk because dropletborne viruses – such as SARS-CoV-2/ Covid-19 – can remain infectious on plastic or stainless steel for up to three days. Some bacteria – such as E. Coli and MRSA – can survive there for several months. DDC Dolphin Marketing Director Zoe Allen said: “A single cough can produce thousands of infectious droplets so regular cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces is critical. “However, there is always the fear that an area may not cleaned thoroughly enough – or missed altogether. “But Hygenex Recoat provides vital extra protection and reassurance because it continues to kill infections for up to six months between applications.” New Hygenex Recoat uses silver ions as an active ingredient to help kill infectious viruses and bacteria. Silver has been used to control infections for thousands of years. Silver’s popularity waned with the advent of antibiotics. But antibiotics do not work on viruses – and bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to them too. So science is turning once again to silver.

The Hygenex Recoat system comprises two spray-on products:

Antimicrobial cleaner – a pHneutral and colourless water-based disinfectant that degreases surfaces and prepares them. Antimicrobial protector – a thin and invisible water-based coating that contains the germ-killing silver ions.

Poole-based DDC Dolphin manufactures and exports sluice room equipment across the world, protecting care homes and hospitals from dangerous infections including superbugs. CMP Print Celebrating 25 Years of Business

We are over the moon to celebrate 25 years in business, working with a team of client-focused professionals. This milestone is testament to the way we do business, and to the interactions we have with our clients. Considered as one of the UK’s leading digital printers with a fast and efficient service, our emphasis has always been on providing all our clients with a high quality, end-to-end service. We offer a vast array of printing services to publishers, authors, manufacturers and training companies. Producing high quality paperback, hardback and coil bound books in black and white, full colour or a mix of the two, our mission is to provide an unrivalled service both in cost and print finish. Through continual investment in emerging technologies and working closely with clients, we continue to pushed the boundaries of digital print, choosing innovation over the ordinary and delivering an unchallenged service to our worldwide audience. We provide true ‘on-demand-print’ at quality levels generally expected of more traditional methods of print and we pride ourselves on supplying clients with innovative and unique digital printing solutions. The business is led by Owner & Managing Director, Paul Dawe, who shared his thoughts and memories: An Interview with Paul Dawe The role of Print Buyers within businesses has changed over the years, with CMP being asked to manage print-buying for clients on a more regular basis. As a digital print company specialising in manufacturing, training and publishing, we’re able to offer solutions to our customers in ways that many others can’t. We pride ourselves on the level of consistent customer service we provide. Offering ‘just in time’ quality delivery and maximising costefficiency for our customers ensure that they feel loved and appreciated, while building trust and ensuring repeat business. Many of our clients have been with us since

1995 - testament to the unrivalled level of service we offer. I’m incredibly proud of my team and the relationships they build with all our clients. No matter how big or small their requirements, we value them all. Hamworthy Heating, a client from the start, has required books, manuals and catalogues. Ian Roe, at the company, said: “We have a longstanding relationship with CMP over their 25 years in business. They have remained a great supplier for our print jobs and you always get a personal service – we still deal with Paul on many of the projects, as well as his helpful team. They have worked on a variety of print jobs for us, from brochures with spot UV covers to wire bound price books and they have always kept up with changing times. In more recent years we moved to a ‘print on demand’ model with them which dramatically reduced our print costs, cut our wastage, and enabled us to react quicker to demand for different print material.” The world we live in now is very different from the one we first started trading in. Consumers expect fast delivery, excellent communication at all stages and a level of customer service never seen before. We embrace positive change and evolution – any business that does not evolve and adapt to the way consumers make purchasing decisions are destined for failure; they also need to be able to tailor their approach or find new markets. Print takes many shapes and forms, constantly evolving and changing with the times, but ultimately, it’s about providing a solution to customers’ needs and if that need changes, so do we. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected so many businesses and it’s important to remember that although we may be fighting strong now, others may not be faring so well. The ripple effect will be long lasting, and the ones prepared to innovate and evolve will stand the best chance of survival. We have been able to continue trading with minimal changes throughout 2020, with COVID safe procedures. Our team is the best bunch of

hard-working people you could ever find – they get the job done, no matter what. Supporting Our Local Community Over the last 25 years we are proud to have provided community support to a number of projects: Thousands of young footballers score goals and keep fit with their Cherries heroes through our sponsorship of the AFC Bournemouth Soccer School; a community initiative bringing grassroots football - and smiles - to lots of children. Rob Mitchell - Commercial Director, AFC Bournemouth said: “Having previously supported AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust over a number of years, with their kind sponsorship of the Bournemouth area Soccer Schools, CMP continue to support their local football club in numerous ways. We take this opportunity to thank Paul and CMP for all that they have done for AFC Bournemouth and wish the company every success for the future.” We also helped raise over £3K for Macmillan Cancer Support after taking part in the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride, and we continue to supporting local charities close to our hearts. Patsy Hallmey & Scott Akam Founders of The Dorset Children’s Foundation commented: “We are a very small charity working to improve the lives of local disabled children. Paul Dawe heard about our work and offered to support our printing needs. For a small charity, this is absolutely amazing. It would be absolutely true to say that with the support of CMP Print we are able to help so many more children and for this, plus their great service we are truly grateful.” Caroline Attreed, Julia’s House Corporate Fundraiser added: “Paul and the team hayleyat CMP have been fantastic supporters of Julia’s House over a number of years and we are very grateful for the difference they make to the lifeline of care we provide to local children with life-limiting conditions and their families. We’re delighted to see them celebrating their 25 year anniversary and look forward to staying in touch over the next 25!” www.cmp-uk.com

DRIVEN AWARDS 2020 Steve Bulley Head of Business Engagement at Dorset Chamber and car fanatic

This year we have featured an eclectic mix of vehicles on the DRIVEN pages but which are the best?

Best Electric Car - Volkswagen ID.3 First Edition

The Golf size 5 door 5 seat family hatchback needs to take electric cars mainstream to be a worldwide success and I think it will. Starting with range, the 58kWh battery version used in all but one of models is good for around 260 miles, which in real life is more than adequate for a majority of trips. Early next year a larger 77kWh battery ‘Tour’ version will give a range of 336 miles. The car is no slouch the 0-62 time of 7.3 seconds only 1sec of the latest Golf GTI. Who says all electric cars are boring? Contact Breeze VW Poole to book a test drive on 01202 509926.

Best City Car - The Clio RS Line

In 130bhp form is the sportiest version of the new Clio range, that’s just 15bhp less than the legendary Clio Williams of the 1990’s. With its 1.3 turbo petrol engine matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, it has a driving style that you would see in much larger premium cars. Acceleration is smooth and when you select sport mode you feel the higher revs before gear changes. Renault claim a 0-62 time of 9 seconds, but it felt quicker to me. Drive in Eco mode and you can expect up to 50mpg, I managed 46mpg in mixed driving which impressed me. Contact Hendy Renault Poole to book a test drive on 01202 974036.

Best Hybrid SUV – XC90 B5 diesel mild-hybrid AWD automatic

If you are in the market for a practical 7 seat SUV that can deliver you to a meeting feeling fresh after a long drive and get the family to the beach at the weekend, the XC90 mild hybrid is a serious contender. The efficient 48-volt mild-hybrid diesel powertrain combines Volvo’s established 2.0-litre 235hp diesel engine with a 48-volt battery, a KERS kinetic energy recovery system and an integrated starter generator. The system improves fuel economy by up to 15 per cent in real-world driving. Volvo were early innovators of the large SUV with the first XC90 launched in 2002. This current version is a worthy update. Contact Volvo Cars Poole to book a test drive on 01202 065555.

Best Sports Car – Hyundai i30N Fastback

The ‘fastback’, which looks more like a coupe but with a big boot via the useful hatchback. Many people I spoke to said it had the look of a Mercedes from the rear, I certainly think the profile has the look a premium European brand. The i30N fastback is a fast car 0-60 in 6.1 seconds with 271bhp and a top speed of 155mph all to the front wheels, proper old school. It feels rapid from the standard bucket seats and using the short change manual gearbox. It also sounds amazing. None of this artificial noise, there are real flaps in the exhaust pipes to ensure the car sounds every bit a as fast as it looks. You can customise your settings for bangs & pops galore, which add to driving enjoyment and makes the car sound great. Contact Hendy Hyundai Poole for a test drive on 01202 970485.

During these unprecedented times, more brands than ever are realising the importance of a strong social media presence. However, many struggle to know how to maximise their social platforms for awareness and promotion. Part of the confusion can lie in the way in which social media is used in variation to ‘traditional’ outreach platforms. In the past, you could advertise your business by putting together offers, then placing them as ads in magazines, newspapers and by printing flyers etc - this is where social media differs from other online advertising mediums. So, what does that mean in practice? The team at South Coast Social provide an overview of how you can apply this principle in action - and use social media to connect with a growing, engaged audience. 1. Post high quality content – Focus your content on being practical, shareable and original. According to the Financial Independence Group (FIG), more than half of consumers (51%) will unfollow a company or profile if the content is irrelevant. It’s important to analyse what has worked, what hasn’t and try to always be reactive. 2. Tailor your content to each social media platform – While we don’t suggest you sign up to every social media platform under the sun, we do suggest you know the difference between each of them. Each channel is different and your posts should reflect that. Modify your content to the specific audience on each platform and make sure you’re up to speed with the differences between each platform. 3. Consistently reach out to new people and industry influencers – People are open to communicate, so don’t be afraid to reach out to new followers, influencers and colleagues. What’s the worst that could happen? Yes - you might not get a reply, but growth doesn’t come from stagnation, so get networking! Connect with fellow peers within your sector on LinkedIn and build a strong business network. 4. Join relevant conversations - Have you ever stumbled across a hot industry discussion? Comment and react as your brand to relevant posts found on your newsfeeds or within industry groups. Jump on board with trending hashtags too, as you never know who you might reach… 5. Create a strategic posting schedule - Think about when your followers are most likely to be active on social media. It’s probably not going to be beneficial to post at 3am, right? Analyse when your audience is most engaged online by utilising the insights available on Facebook Business Manager. You’ll immediately find more engagement with your posts if you’re posting at the right time – LinkedIn for example usually sees the best results between 8am -10am and at lunch times. Try experimenting with post times for each platform, as they all differ! 6. Politely ask for feedback and reviews - Receiving Facebook and Google reviews from satisfied clients is an easy way to build reputation and interest in your business. All you have to do is ask! Have you ever changed your mind about watching a film because the ratings are bad, or were swayed into buying something because of a 5-star review? Positive, authentic reviews will not only give you relevant content to share but allow you to start to build a base for trust from potential customers. 7. Define your brand and style – It’s important to be consistent in your grammar, punctuation, voice and tone of voice throughout your profiles. If you need help defining your tone, consider contacting an agency to help you. 8. Get visual - It may be an obvious one, but videos and images are essential on social media! Image and video-based content performs highly and boosts engagement rates, so make sure you are sharing highly eye-catching material. Browse free stock images on sites like Unsplash or create your own with access to ready-made templates on Canva, or use the video tool Animoto. It’s also important to ensure you are using a high-quality camera or camera phone when taking your own photos. Want to up your social media game? Whether you’re an established brand or just beginning your business journey, South Coast Social work with start-ups and challenger businesses about to launch through to global brands, spanning a wide variety of sectors including health and beauty, fashion, media, finance, design and technology. www.southcoastsocial.com

Working from home. How Enhanced can help make it safe, secure and possible With over 25 years of experience in IT and a culture of providing the highest levels of customer service, Enhanced are here to help you during these unprecedented times. Covid 19 has accelerated many companies Digital Transformation journeys, and one area of this has been the immediate need for many employees to work remotely from home. 2020 has seen many businesses implement remote working fast, but not always with security in mind. This inevitably has led to a massive increase in cyber-attacks and criminals stealing company data and credentials far easier than previously. Enhanced have seen the emergence of what is called “Shadow IT”, which refers to new systems being deployed that have not been authorised by the IT department. This is where individual users or departments have tried to work around the shortcomings of the central systems. Enhanced has ensured that their customers have taken a considered approach to security for remote users. The Microsoft 365 suite has enabled users to take advantage of Microsoft Teams to share and collaborate on work as if they were in the office, but with all the security features that are included such as Data Leakage Prevention DLP, Passwordless access, Multi Factor Authentication and even built in AI that can learn to prevent even unknown malware threats. As a company Enhanced don’t just provide Microsoft as a solution, because when it comes to security this could be a very blinkered approach. Therefore, they partner with other vendors as well, such as Darktrace. Darktrace are the leading antimalware organisation and have a unique AI engine regarded as the best in the market. Remote working is here to stay, but so of course is the need to protect users and companies from malicious activity. Enhanced know that many of their customers are going through tough times, but they can be assured that the company is there for them to protect their IT for the foreseeable future. Jeff Jones is the Infrastructure Business Development Manger at Enhanced. With over 20 years’ experience in IT infrastructure, his consultative “listen first” approach has helped many businesses across the UK. Give him a call, 01202 308000 and he will only be too happy to discuss how your business when working remotely can be safe and secure.

Positive business growth and recruitment at Spyrosoft Local technology firm, Spyrosoft, which creates software for a variety of industries, has seen its revenue grow by three quarters during the coronavirus pandemic. Launched in Wroclaw, Poland in 2016 by former IT lead at Ordnance Survey, the positive results show that the company is one of the fastest-growing specialist technology businesses in Europe. Its Managing Director, Andrew Radcliffe, co-founded the software engineering business in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2016, after leaving his job as Head of Development at Ordnance Survey, the government’s Southamptonbased mapping agency. The business has its UK headquarters at Ferndown, Dorset. He said the demand for technology innovation across Europe was showing no signs of slowing despite the pandemic. Spyrosoft’s group revenue was up 74 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020. He said: “I am delighted to report a period of stability for the Spyrosoft SA Group during quarter two of 2020 despite the negative global impact of coronavirus.  “This is mainly due to our diverse

customer portfolio and minimal exposure to impacted industries. “During the quarter Spyrosoft has seen an increased demand for our technology services resulting in new customer acquisitions and additional projects from the existing customer base. “This has enabled us to invest in the further growth of our subsidiary companies across the world with the hire of 32 additional employees, bringing the total to 477 at the end of June 2020. “Spyrosoft SA Group was able to achieve consolidated revenue in the period of 26million Polish Zloty (approximately £5.2m), a 74 per cent increase on the same period in 2019. “I am optimistic for continued growth during the third and fourth quarters of this year leading into 2021.” Mr Radcliffe said the UK business had continued to grow rapidly since the start of lockdown, hiring people in technical and business roles. The recruitment drive isn’t limited to Europe, however. The UK arm of Spyrosoft has plans to grow substantially over the coming year. This will be a great boost to the local economy here in the Dorset/ Hampshire region. www.spyro-soft.com

Domestic Abuse Funding for Dorset Charity Sexual Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS Dorset) has received funding from both BBC Children in Need and the National Lottery to expand its services in order to help support both children and adults who have been affected by domestic abuse. This year, due to the pandemic and lockdown measures, national and local domestic abuse charities have reported a huge increase in calls to helplines and need for domestic abuse support. STARS Dorset saw a 155% increase in calls compared with the same period last year, contact to the NSPCC helpline about domestic abuse rose by nearly 50% and the National Domestic Abuse Helpline rose sharply throughout the lockdown period. STARS Dorset supported over 1800 people in Dorset affected by sexual violence last year and with this additional funding will expand its services to both adults and children affected by domestic abuse. Currently 2.4 million people are affected by domestic abuse each year, equating to 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men (ONS). The funding received from BBC Children in Need will go towards developing a new program of support for children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse during lockdown or lived in abusive households during this period. STARS Dorset will be partnering with NuWaves, a Community Interest Company (CIC) that specialises in supporting children affected by domestic abuse and together will deliver a recovery programme across Dorset for children and young people. The project will include group work, individual counselling and working with schools to help teachers recognise the signs of children affected and provide them with the necessary support. The funding received from the National Lottery will go towards developing a specialist counselling service dedicated to adult victims of

domestic abuse. Those that receive support will receive twenty weekly counselling sessions face to face, free of charge, at the charity’s centres or through online counselling sessions depending on COVID regulations at the time. STARS Dorset Service Manager Helen Stevens said: “We are delighted to receive this funding from both BBC Children in Need and the National Lottery Fund to expand our services to support both children and adults affected by domestic abuse in Dorset. During lockdown the amount of people calling our Support Line increased dramatically, and we hope this funding will help those that need it most with one to one counselling, group work and supporting teachers in schools across the county.”

Anyone who has been affected by sexual violence and would like confidential advice and support can call the STARS Helpline on 01202 308855 or visit www.starsdorset.org For those wanting to access the charity’s counselling service they can either self-refer or ask a professional they already receive support from to refer on their behalf. If you are in immediate danger always call the police, and always dial 999 if it is an emergency and press 55 if you can’t talk (only on mobile phones).
