DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Dorset Business Focus. It’s hard to believe it’s December already. This year seems to have flown. I’d like to briefly reflect on our inaugural GU6 event at AFC Bournemouth on 12th November. GU6 (or Got Your Six, a WW2 flying formation) is a Dorset Chamber project designed to provide mental health support to our business leaders. The project recognises the huge challenges and pressures that business owners often face on their own and the toll this can take on our mental health. The event was a huge success and gave the opportunity to share experiences and practical tips in a warm and welcoming environment. Thank you to everyone who attended. GU6 is building a bank of qualified mental health first aiders who offer their support to businesspeople and if you’d like to be involved, please do get in touch. Special thanks to our sponsors Lester Aldridge. Now we are all returning to life as we knew it, our events programme is back in full swing. We continue to deliver monthly online network events which remain popular and have also now built a strong new face to face programme. There is no doubt that people are really welcoming the opportunity to meet in person and these events are proving to be extremely popular. I’d recommend early booking as many events sell out quickly. We remain very mindful of Covid, and every event is fully risked assessed to protect all attending. You’ll receive a warm welcome and you can see all our events on

our website. We were recently invited to nominate one business for each of the five categories in the British Chamber of Commerce national business awards and I’m delighted to announce that two of our five nominations are regional winners. Firstly, Field International Group are the regional winner of the Global Reach category, celebrating business growing and expanding on a global level. An ambitious and highly respected business, this recognition is so well deserved and my congratulations to all at Field. Our other regional winner is Carbon Kapture in the Problem Solver category, recognising businesses taking an innovative approach in providing solutions to problems. Carbon Kapture is a highly innovative Dorset business helping businesses offset their carbon footprint through supporting the growth of seaweed in the ocean. Seaweed, specifically kelp, grows at a phenomenal rate and has the effect of sucking up CO2 in the ocean and supporting the growth of the natural environment. The seaweed can then be farmed and as a product, can be used to create new artificial reefs, again supporting the development of the natural eco-system. Traditionally trees are grown to help offset our carbon footprint and this is a highly innovative and a much quicker solution.

Both are very worthy winners and go forward to the national finals. I’m thrilled that Dorset has two of the five regional winners and huge congratulations and best of luck to both. Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and successful 2022. Our hope is of course that our recovery continues after a very difficult time and as always, if there is anything we can do to help you, please don’t hesitate to call on us. We’ll continue to do our absolute best to support Dorset businesses. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Routes to Resilience

Dorset Chamber recently held their first in-person GU6 event; part of their initiative specifically focusing on supporting the mental health of our business leaders.

The event, sponsored by Lester Aldridge and held at AFC Bournemouth featured talks from personal development speaker Peter Radford, local entrepreneur Andy Coleman who spoke about his personal experience and demonstrated strategies for overcoming stress, and financial planning expert Gary Neild who gave tips on how to prevent financial stress. One of the key themes was ‘Routes to Resilience.’ We explored ways in which we can help our business leaders to feel strong, empowered and motivated. By nurturing a network of like-minded people we can ensure that we share experiences and talk to peers who empathise with the specific challenge of running a business. Routes to Resilience allowed people to share their top tips for de-stressing. It threw up some thought-provoking suggestions which can be used by anyone as tools to prevent overwhelm. One of the key things to come out of the event was how we recognise our own stress. The visual imagery of the stress bucket 4

was very inciteful. It is important that we recognise when things are starting to get out of control, so that we can ‘nip it in the bud’ before it becomes a full-blown crisis. The top 10 tips from our Routes to Resilience exercise were: •

Finding your own outlet valve is especially important at this time of year as Christmas adds its own unique pressures and stresses. After nearly two years we are faced with a raft of Christmas parties, social events and family gatherings. These can induce anxiety for even the most ardent party-goers. According to the ONS, one in five adults experienced depressive symptoms in early 2021, more than double the number seen before the pandemic. Undoubtedly the problem will not go away in the short-term. We therefore need to be as aware and alert as possible, looking out for any loved-ones who may be struggling. We believe that having a supportive peer network of Champions who have received Mental Health First Aid training and are available for those business leaders that are struggling and need to reach out is vitally important. If you wish to become a GU6 Champion, please email GU6support@dorsetchamber.co.uk to find out more information.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PREMIER PARTNER NEWS

Five years ago, retail entrepreneur Cas Paton made a decision that would change the eCommerce landscape forever. Keeping trust and transparency at the core, he created an online marketplace that would be a fair environment in which retailers could grow. Several years of unwavering success and meteoric growth later, Paton and team set their sights on yet another record-breaking year. “We’ve come so far in such a short period of time. Five years ago, we opened OnBuy for retailers and customers, and we had none of either. We knew it would be hard going to get the business moving, but marketplaces are incredibly difficult to start gaining traction, as you open your doors with nothing to sell, and no traffic to offer the retailers, in order to incentivise them to sell.” commented Paton. “Looking back to when I first started planning the business, I was warned against starting OnBuy from the very beginning. Investors in the venture capital world all thought it was impossible, starting out in an industry sector dominated by goliath brands. “But I look back now and pinch myself. Beyond sales and reach, we’ve expanded our team 10x, with over 100 roles still to be filled! We’ve grown an impressive network of over 10,000 retailers and trusted brands, offering over 36 million products, providing the very best in choice for our customers,” Paton added. Having achieved record figures in growth

in its first three years, OnBuy was dubbed the largest UK-owned marketplace in 2019*. Since then, OnBuy has bucked the market trends and continued to grow at an exponential rate. Last year, lockdown doubled OnBuy’s sales overnight, as OnBuy sought to protect retailers from other marketplaces focusing specifically on ‘covid essentials. “Other marketplaces dedicated efforts to COVID related products, capitalising on the demand. Many retailers were struggling to get sales, and we gave them a new route to more customers. As a result, we grew our product count by millions, and ultimately gave our customers more choice, resulting in more sales, and finished the year with a stronger business.” The result, OnBuy’s fourth year of trading finished on a high that they believed was going to be tough to follow. However, despite online retail sales dropping dramatically across the industry, OnBuy’s sales are continuing to soar, demonstrating its ability to drive additional revenue for retailers, and that OnBuy is increasingly meeting the needs of the customer. “We’ve experienced overwhelming success and grown at an outstanding pace - it’s clear to see that there’s an appetite for choice in the ecommerce landscape and that an alternative marketplace was indeed

what people wanted,” added Paton. “We’re delighted to have hit our 5-year milestone, but our focus now is to improve our product and continue to grow our community. “It’s been five years of hard work - which has seen good times and challenges. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my motivated team and we’re all excited to continue this journey together. Now it’s on to the exciting future, and we have huge plans that are already in motion,” Paton concluded. OnBuy has become an award-winning marketplace connecting millions of customers with thousands of trusted retailers and an impressive network of logistics partners including Fedex, Royal Mail and DHL. Today, shoppers can choose from over 36 million products from more than 10,000 retailers trading on the platform numbers that are increasing every day. •

Presidents Column by Caron Khan

Dorset Chamber chief executive joins Weymouth College board Weymouth College has strengthened its board with a heavyweight appointment from Dorset’s business world. It has welcomed Dorset Chamber chief executive Ian Girling as it steps up its commitment to support employers, boost skills training and help drive the local economy. The chamber – the voice of business in Dorset – is the county’s leading business support organisation with more than 700 members representing 37,000 employees. Weymouth College provides education and training for more than 3,000 students – including more than 1,300 young people, 500 adults and 500 apprentices – and works in partnership with 400 local employers. Richard Noah, chair of the Weymouth College Corporation, its governing body, said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Ian to the Weymouth College Corporation. “Ian has been a strong supporter of the college’s ongoing employer services programme and the experience and commitment to skills training Ian brings to our corporation is much appreciated.” Ian is a long-standing supporter and champion of further education in Dorset, working closely with providers as well as the Dorset Careers and Enterprise Company. He is also on the board of the more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership. He said: “Building close links between education and businesses is becoming more important than ever as colleges are expected to deliver provision that is totally in line with and meets the requirements of business. “As a chamber we are committed to helping build links between education and business. I’m delighted to join the Weymouth College Corporation.” Weymouth College, based in Cranford Avenue, is a member of the Dorset Chamber as well as the Weymouth and Portland, and Dorchester chambers. It offers more than 250 courses, including apprenticeships in over 20 sectors, degree level courses, adult skills learning and a wide range of vocational and corporate training for the workplace – including the development of flexible provision to meet the exact skills needs of local employers. The college, which has a ‘good’ Ofsted rating, recently unveiled state-of-the-art centres of excellence for engineering and construction with backing from the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). www.weymouth.ac.uk

I’d like to congratulate everyone on still being here as amazing business leaders, despite the catastrophic impact of the pandemic. Your relentless ambition and perseverance is truly inspiring, not to mention your willingness and ability to adapt and evolve in the face of adversity. This is what defines a true business leader, and is why I am so incredibly proud to have served as President the past months. You have shown that you can survive even the harshest of climates, and it’s this resilience that also underpins the Chamber, who has spent the last year driving itself and its members forward with a renewed focus on wellbeing – a focus that we can all agree is imperative to survival, both as businesses and as individuals. The appointment of Xanthe Grace, a dedicated Health and Wellbeing Co-Coordinator, demonstrates our commitment to workplace wellbeing, and we believe and hope that every employer will nurture their own employees with the same empathy and understanding. In doing so, you’ll make huge strides in creating a positive work environment where the business and individuals thrive. But, despite the worldwide focus on physical and mental health in the workplace, there are many wellbeing issues that have, for so many years, been ignored. For example, the menopause. We are incredibly proud to have stepped out of the corporate comfort zone to talk openly and lead the conversation on this massively important issue. We’re now talking honestly and empathetically about the real experiences of women at work, and how we can improve their experiences in the workplace. I hope that this conversation continues and that attitudes begin to change so that more women feel empowered to continue their careers and succeed. And with the recent launch of Got Your 6 (GU6), we’re also leading the conversation around the mental health of our business leaders, whose own wellbeing can often get overlooked. By building a network of business leader ‘champions’ who have undergone Mental Health First Aid training, we’re able to provide confidential support for business leaders so that they have the inner resources to continue doing what they do best – growing their businesses, nurturing their employees, and contributing so dynamically to Dorset’s thriving business community. By thinking ‘outside the box’ and focusing our attention on areas that were previously in the shadows, the Chamber’s been able to buck the trend of the pandemic and actually prosper and grow. An example of this unwavering ambition is reaching out to our Chamber colleagues in Singapore to develop a partnership where the two chambers can work together on joint initiatives for the good of our members. We can also boast 100 % retention of Business Partner members, which proves that the Chamber is still very much valued as a vital part of the Dorset Business community. And to demonstrate our real belief in, and commitment to our members, we’ve put forward several businesses to be recognised nationally for their excellence at the British Chambers Awards – I am particularly very proud that Field International got through to the Winner or Winners awards, and very much hope they come out on top! 11

One in six people use pet’s name as password Other common and easily hackable password choices include the names of relatives and sports teams, a UK study reveals. As many as 15% of Brits use their pets’ names as passwords to “protect” their online accounts, according to the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Center (NCSC). The agency cited figures from a survey that revealed how a worrying number of Brits leave themselves wide open to account takeover and other attacks. As many as 14% use family members’ names as part of their passwords. Another 13% use a date that is important to them, with 6% integrating the name of their favourite sports club or team into their passwords. Also, 6% admitted that they use “password” as the whole

or part of their password. In all these cases, cybercriminals could easily break into the accounts. Indeed, the results of the survey aren’t too dissimilar from a similar study three years ago. “We may be a nation of animal lovers but using your pet’s name as a password could make you an easy target for callous cyber criminals,” said Nicola Hudson, NCSC Director of Policy and Communications. The agency also urged people to use proper password-creation techniques in lieu of resorting to easy-to-remember passwords.

We may be a nation of animal lovers but using your pet’s name as a password could make you an easy target for callous cyber criminals

“I would urge everybody to visit cyberaware. gov.uk and follow our guidance on setting secure passwords which recommends using passwords made up of three random words,” Hudson said. It’s worth noting that poor password choices affect people the world over and aren’t limited to just the United Kingdom; the latest annual list of the most commonly used passwords shows an abundance of such examples. NCSC also urged everybody to avoid another common password mistake – recycling the same password over and over again. Instead, you should use a unique and strong password or passphrase for each of your accounts, especially the valuable ones, and whenever possible, couple it with an added later of protection – multi-factor authentication. To avoid the hassle of remembering all those credentials, you should also consider using a password manager. The survey also revealed that people are creating more and more online accounts, with 27% of those quizzed saying that they have at least four more new accounts compared to the same time last year. Meanwhile, 6% reported they have added more than 10 new accounts over the past 12 months.

Mainstream house prices expected to rise by 13.1 per cent in next five years Mainstream house prices throughout Dorset are expected to grow by 13.1 per cent over the next five years – with an increase of 3 per cent in 2022 according to latest research. New figures from estate agents Savills show the average cost of a home in the region is predicted to rise to £386,769 by 2026 compared to the current average of £341,971. The increase is on par with the figure forecast for the UK as a whole, with prices also expected to rise by 3.5 per cent in 2022. It means the average cost of a home in the UK would increase from an average of £327,838 to £370,785 by 2026. At the higher end of the market – broadly the top 5 to 10 per cent by value – prices in the region are predicted to grow by 19.3 per cent over the next five years and by 4 per cent in 2022. Ashley Rawlings, head of residential sales at Savills Wimborne, said while there was likely to be less urgency in the market next year, demand for property in popular

towns and villages looks set to continue. “After such intensity in the market and without the imperative of a stamp duty holiday, we know there’s likely to be less urgency from 2022,” he said. “As a result, coupled with the first anticipated interest rate rise, our researchers expect price growth in the near term to be somewhat more muted than we have seen of late. However, the number of homes coming to the market has also been constrained and this – combined with relatively low unemployment rates and a robust economic performance coming out of a recession – means we simply expect to see softer growth rather than prices falling. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Dorset has experienced above average increases

in house price growth for the past decade or more. So, it’s perhaps no surprise to see other parts of the UK now catching up. That said, the regional increases we are predicting remain greater than those forecast for properties in London, while we still expect changes in working patterns to underpin demand in more rural areas, albeit to a lesser degree than over the past 18 months. With its excellent schooling, variety of high-quality housing stock and access to lots of green space and open countryside, Dorset has always been – and will continue to be – a popular choice for a wide number of buyers. A shortage of available properties on the market also means that homes in the most popular towns and villages will continue to be in high demand. There will always be areas that buck the trend and perform better than the wider forecasts. However, setting a realistic asking price from the start will be key to maintaining momentum as we move into the new year.”

The end of winding up petition protection; a summary In the first lockdown the government introduced many measures to help struggling companies. One was protection against winding up petitions (a court process where a business that is owed money can shut down its debtor unless they pay what they owe). This protection was intended to end in September 2020 but was extended, eventually ending on 30 September 2021. New rules, which started in October 2021, still help financially weakened companies. But companies have less protection than before. Here’s a summary of the new rules… Landlords are still banned from using winding up petitions to force their business tenants to pay rent that is unpaid because of Covid-19. This runs with other temporary rules that stop commercial landlords from evicting non-paying tenants, because of Covid-19. These temporary rules should last until 31 March 2022. Other creditors can use winding up petitions to put pressure on companies to pay debts (or to force them into liquidation, if they don’t pay). But: • Only if they are owed £10,000 or more (a much larger figure than the pre-Covid-19 £750). • They must give 21 days’ notice to the debtor and ask for payment proposals. They must not dismiss proposals casually; they will need a reason. • In most cases they still need to serve a statutory demand on the debtor too (which gives them 21 days to pay). Sleep Easy is a National YMCA initiative that has raised over £1.5m since 2010. Sheena Dayman, the Events Manager at YMCA Bournemouth, has co-ordinated businesses and local Schools over the last three years to actively get involved. In 2019, 460 students raised almost £25K, and local businesses raised £45K. In 2021 it was curtailed due to Covid but businesses, and many individuals, still took part in their own gardens. The participants on Saturday 16th October 2021 gave up their bed for a night and slept in cardboard boxes, raising invaluable awareness as well as funds for YMCA to continue their quest in ending homelessness. Unlike those who are homeless, the individuals did this with friends, in a safe and secure place and only for one night. One of the box sponsors, Matthew Barrow, Managing Partner at Lester Aldridge, said “YMCA Bournemouth is an integra; part of our community and by taking part in this event we are helping the change the local social landscape.”. Homelessness continues to be on the increase, the statistics are shocking. Life expectancy for females on the

streets is reduced by up to 30 years! And it’s not just about sleeping on the streets, there are also many people who are sofa-surfing and have no safe place to call home. YMCA’s mission has always been to provide that safe place…home. YMCA passionately believes that everyone should have a secure place to call home, and its local work/impact is focused on this aim. Sheena Dayman commented, “We do so much more than just give people a roof over their heads, although we do that very well. We give our residents invaluable one-to-one support and the life skills/tools to move forward gaining independent living. We change lives….” Sheena’s shelter was aptly named ‘House of Joy’, another reminder that YMCA aim to bring lasting JOY to those they support locally in our community. The need for the YMCA, and agencies like them, continues to be great. You can make a donation to Sheena’s page at www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SheenaDayman www.ymcabournemouth.org.uk

This is a step back towards ‘normal’. HMRC have used winding up petitions in the past, to collect unpaid VAT and PAYE contributions. It will be interesting to see what their policy is on the exercise of their newly restored legal rights. 01202 499255 | mniekirk@frettens.co.uk www.frettens.co.uk

My landlord has served a Schedule of Dilapidations, what do I do? Despite its longestablished origins, the term ‘dilapidations’ remains a complex and misunderstood aspect of landlord and tenant affairs. Should your landlord serve you with a Schedule of Dilapidations on a terminal basis, then it is important to seek professional advice to help you fully understand and deal with the claim on your behalf. Claims for dilapidations are normally resolved in one of two ways – sometimes a combination of both. You might decide to undertake dilapidations liability work yourself before the lease ends, so you can hand back the premises in compliance with your lease obligations. This option allows you to remain in control of the delivery and work costs but is likely to cause disruption to business continuity - particularly if you have to reinstate certain alterations. In many cases, this would involve vacating the building before your lease expires, having already taken occupation of new premises. Once your lease expires, and if you do not undertake the dilapidations work yourself, you normally lose the right to occupy the premises. In this case, your dilapidations claim will be negotiated as a monetary settlement based on the costs your landlord will incur in doing the work themselves, allowing them to remarket the property and secure a new tenant. In addition to the cost of this work, the claim will also include other costs incurred by the landlord, such as professional fees for managing the work, amongst other (legitimate) losses that may apply. Our Bournemouth-based building consultancy team can advise you in both situations - whether determining dilapidations liability and helping you deliver the necessary work, or scrutinising your landlord’s claim and negotiating a settlement based on relevant statute, case law and dilapidations protocol. For more information or help in assessing and budgeting for future dilapidations liability, please get in touch.

Poole based company Grapevine is celebrating its 30th anniversary The business began life as a chain of mobile phone shops across the South and Southwest. Local people may remember their stores in Poole, Bournemouth, Dorchester and Weymouth branded ‘Vodafone Centre’ in the 1990’s, which went on to become ‘The Word’ later that decade. Grapevine exited the high street in favour of a business-to-business focus in the early 2000’s, relocating to Winfrith Technology Centre and then to its current location on Nuffield Road, Poole in 2004. Since then, the company’s portfolio of solutions has expanded significantly, repositioning Grapevine a full service, business technology and communications provider, incorporating managed IT support, fixed line telecoms and connectivity. Many of Grapevine’s clients have been with them for more than ten years, with some dating back to the early days of the retail stores. “It is a wonderful achievement to celebrate our 30th anniversary” commented company Chairman, Peter Boby, who started the business alongside Brian Vockins. “So much has changed during these three decades. A third of our current staff were not even born when we started back in 1991, yet we also have a third of our staff who have been with us for over 10 years. A huge thank you to all our loyal staff and also to our clients, many of which have been with us on our journey for several years. Here’s to the next 30!” Managing Director, James Spinks joined the company in November 1996 as a Sales Executive in Grapevine’s Poole High Street branch. As he celebrates 25 years with the business this month, James reflects on

the journey the team have been on together. “Grapevine has provided us all with opportunities, the chance to strive to do things bigger and better, being given more responsibility, to be able to have a material and measurable effect on the growth of our business. As Managing Director now, one of my most important roles is to pass this empowerment down the line to help our evergrowing team of staff to be the best they can be too.” Grapevine plans to continue its celebrations into 2022 with its ’30 days for 30 years’ project that will see the company dedicate a month of staff time to charity and worthwhile causes. All colleagues will be given an extra day of annual leave to spend working with an organisation of their choice. In addition to this, Grapevine has recently launched its Community Programme, partnering with grassroots sports clubs on income generating opportunities. As part of the programme, for any new business referred to Grapevine via the participating clubs, Grapevine will donate to the club based on the number of licences/users for a range of their technology and communications services. www.grapevine.uk.com

Will the increase in NIC cover the true cost of care? Downing Street has recently announced a 1.25% rise in the National Insurance Contributions (NIC) rate – effecting employees, the self-employed as well as employers - as a means of funding social care. The Government’s intentions to support additional funding into social care are welcome but more is required around raising awareness of who pays for care, plus solutions for increased private funding. It’s well-known that the care crisis requires eye-watering sums of money to fix, and some form of taxation is needed to foot this high bill. While an increase in National Insurance should raise significant extra funds for social care, it is not clear that it will raise enough to meet costs for social care, as well as making contribution to additional COVID-19 costs on the NHS as well as the numerous wider reforms announced. The harsh reality is that most older people in the UK requiring long-term social care will need to pay for some or all of it themselves, and exactly how much care costs, varies from person to person. When the need for long-term care arises, most people have very little idea of where to start and responsibility for arranging care often falls to the children of those who need it. The current care system is also complex with many moving parts, including care needs and care means tests. On top of dealing with the complexity, there’s often difficult emotional conversations to be had about a parent’s changing care needs and whether to receive care in the home or move to a dedicated care facility. So, it’s important for people to do their homework and familiarise themselves with what support is available both at the point of need and on an ongoing basis, as their own or their parent’s requirements develop with time. Boo charity thrives home and away Simon White, Chairman of the Boo Charity and CEO of Enhanced had the most incredible experiences travelling to Kenya to visit the projects being carried out, which are funded through the charity and culminating in the annual Boo Ball, held at AFC Bournemouth. Simon was accompanied by his daughter, Luella on the trip to Kenya. They visited the Boo charity project Nyamache - Life Skills in Kenya, a wonderful project which has life changing impact for young vulnerable children teaching skills in dressmaking, IT, farming and much more to enable employment opportunities for the children, some of whom even start up their own business. They also travelled to Nairobi where they spent an amazing day in Kibera, where the children were presented with simple gifts and donations including football kits and boots. The happiness captured at this very special moment is something Simon will never forget. "I met a young boy aged 14 who at the age of 11 discovered the Kimta project and its Boo supported football and membership programme. This saved him from a life amongst gangs

and drugs. The trip was inspiring, it was incredible to meet up with a little girl I personally supported, Cecilia, since the age of 2. Now a blossoming 10-year-old full of joy and hope for her future". Never has it been more important to raise crucial funds to continue to change the lives of more young people in Kenya. It has been a hard year for us all with little opportunity to fund raise for Boo due to Covid. It has had an impact on the daily lives of both the children and teachers within the Boo projects. Despite the adversities we have made it through and continued to significantly transform the lives of those we support. This made the Boo Ball 2021 even more crucial, but with the incredible support of local businesses and generosity of individuals the evening raised an incredible £23,000. As a zero-admin organisation we could not do this without the kindness, generosity, and dedication of everyone involved. We are determined to continue supporting and raising funds to further our work in Kenya and transforming young peoples' lives. www.enhanced.co.uk

Inspire welcomes the return of its face-to-face Business Academy Returning to a face-to-face format for the first time since the pandemic, Inspire held its latest Business Academy, with an inspirational learning session led by founder of Not Just Travel, Steve Witt. The Business Academy – an exclusive training programme for all Inspire staff – has been running with virtual sessions throughout the year, but the firm was determined to get back to face-to-face events for the benefit of all the team. Local entrepreneur, Steve Witt told his story of an early career as a firefighter straight from school, prior to launching and running a handful of design, website and online businesses, before founding his travel business, Not Just Travel. Steve engaged the Inspire team with a frank and honest account of the highs and lows of his 20-year business journey, alongside the challenges and opportunities that he’s faced from launching Not Just Travel in 2001, to franchising the business ten years ago, and its success today with over 450 active franchisees. Discussing the challenges of keeping his franchisee base motivated and engaged during the pandemic, alongside the daily pressures of running an international business, Steve offered his advice for the team: “There are often lots of reasons why not to do something, but you only need one reason to get on and do it, you will always find a solution.” The internal Business Academy initiative is a programme of training sessions, combining real-life case studies, soft skills training and business practices, designed to strengthen the team’s expertise and understanding across all aspects of business. The sessions also involve practical tips for resilience and wellbeing. 30

Inspire Founder, Warren Munson commented: “We’re delighted to have re-launched our face-to-face Business Academy sessions, kicking off with the team having the opportunity to learn first-hand about Steve’s fascinating entrepreneurial journey. “The purpose of the Business Academy is to help and support the team by providing training on a variety of topics and themes from wider business skills to practical tips for mental wellbeing, motivation and generally understanding the world around us – and how that impacts us and our clients. All with the aim of improving client service and delight. “We’ve been fortunate to have already covered an array of speakers and topics as part of our virtual Business

Academy sessions over the last few months, but we’re now looking forward to an excellent programme of face-to-face sessions for the remainder of this year and into 2022.” HR Manager, Liz Phipps, added: “Inspire is well-known for supporting the team throughout their studies for professional qualifications, and the Business Academy adds another dimension to this learning and development experience. “We’re really proud to have created an exciting programme of sessions for the whole team, that not only raise commercial awareness and understanding across the team, but also help to engage and inspire us all.” www.inspireaccountants.co.uk

Lester Aldridge featured in The Times Best Law Firms 2022 Lester Aldridge has been named in The Times Best Law Firms 2022, a list of the top 200 law firms in England and Wales. The list features the best lawyers for business, public and private-client law as voted on by their peers in other law firms. The survey was undertaken by Statista on behalf of The Times, an international market research firm. They asked solicitors in England and Wales to recommend the best law firms in any of 26 categories covering business, public and private-client fields.

To ensure the survey is fair, respondents cannot choose their own law firm and the system only allows people to vote once. Those with the most votes from 4,619 respondents made it into The Times Best Law Firms 2022. Scottish law firms were also surveyed. Matthew Barrow, the managing partner at Lester Aldridge, comments: “With only 200 of the 10,000 law firms in England and Wales making the list, we are hugely proud to have been featured in the list. To have been endorsed by our peers in this way, particularly during such

turbulent times for the legal sector, is a fantastic achievement and I would like to thank the whole Lester Aldridge team for making this possible.” Lester Aldridge was also recently ranked as the top law firm in Dorset in leading legal directories The Legal 500 UK 2022 and Chambers UK 2022. www.lesteraldridge.com

Dorset Mind launch ‘Move Your Mind’ wellbeing initiative for 2022 After the success of ‘Move Your Mind’ this year, local mental health charity Dorset Mind launch their January challenge that encourages people in Dorset to start the New Year by getting active - and completing at least 30 minutes of any form of movement, EVERY day, throughout the month. The challenge proved to be a huge success with people who took part in a wide range of online classes and activities. They gave the charity feedback such as, “I had a much better January than usual”, “The challenge definitely helped improve my mood and reduced my anxiety” and “I felt happy, calm and slept better at night.” As a result, the charity has just announced their NEW initiative for January 2022.

The theme is ‘Move your body to free your mind’

Restrictions permitting, the charity aims to arrange walks every weekend at various locations across Dorset as part of their January timetable. Regular physical exercise can help anxiety, stress and intrusive thoughts by releasing cortisol, which helps manage stress. It’s also known to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a period of depression. Importantly, by concentrating on your body and movement, that act gives your brain something else to focus on and can be used as a positive coping strategy. Dorset Mind’s Chief Executive, Marianne Storey said, “January is notoriously tough after the financial stresses and strains of Christmas time. Move Your Mind offers people taking part in ‘Move Your Mind’, a fun way to follow

the evidence-based ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ and improve their mental wellbeing. Getting active also gives people opportunities to connect with others taking part. We hope people will enjoy the challenge of incorporating 30 minutes of activity into their daily routine whilst fundraising for local mental health. We’ve seen considerable improvement in our entrants, staff and volunteers due to this initiative and we’re extremely keen to build upon its success.” Dr Andy Mayers, Dorset Mind Patron and Principal Academic at Bournemouth University adds, “I am delighted that we are running ‘Move Your Mind’ again. The benefits of activity and exercise on physical and mental wellbeing are well known. This also a great opportunity to raise awareness about mental health, which can often take a hit just after Christmas.” Registrations are open to everyone across the county, however mobile you are – those taking part are encouraged to take part in whichever way they are able to. It’s FREE to enter with the opportunity to either donate or fundraise to help the charity continue to provide their lifechanging 1-2-1 and group support for adults and young people across Dorset. To register and access additional resources here: www.dorsetmind.uk/move-your-mind To help encourage participants to fundraise for Dorset Mind, the charity is appealing to local businesses to help sponsor and promote the challenge. November’s budget – what you might have missed and other news The latest budget was a bit of a damp squib with many of the major tax changes for the coming tax year made back in March other than the introduction of the new Health and Social Care Levy announced in September. A small concession to the payment of Capital Gains Tax on residential property was released in the budget papers although not highlighted on the day with this now extended to 60 days from the previous 30 applying after 26 October. It has also been confirmed that the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) is to remain at £1m until 31 March 2023 as this was due to drop to £200,000 from 31st December 2021 thus tying into the end of the ‘Super Deductions’ announced back in March. Whilst Alcohol Duties remained frozen until February 2023, smokers were hit again. The rates for Alcohol Duty are subject to reform, with changes to the structure that will see some higher alcohol content product Duty rates increase although there is some good cheer as beer and cider sold on draught in pubs will see three pence a pint taken off. The Duty on champagne will also be less. Away from the budget, Making Tax Digital (MTD) has been put back a year for sole traders and landlords, which is good news with the dates for partnerships and companies also deferred for a further period. However there is also bad news as from 1st April 2022 HMRC will be introducing a new points-based penalty regime for late submissions of VAT returns and at a certain threshold of points, a financial penalty of £200 will be charged. The Self-assessment returns date (31 January) is fast approaching and on behalf of my fellow accountants I would ask you not to leave this until the last minute thus leaving little time for us to plan your affairs and inform you in good time of tax payable. Finally I would like to take the opportunity of wishing you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Carla Hobby on 01202 715950. www.morrislane.co.uk

Dorset leads the way with groundbreaking schools’ conference on Racism and Inequality Lytchett Minster School saw thousands of students tuning in LIVE from 88 schools around the country and abroad to take part in the first ever national schools’ conference on racism and inequality. 250 students attended this groundbreaking event in person designed to educate and inform about the injustices and inequalities experienced by so many in UK society today. FREE AND EQUAL?, organised by Dorset Chamber member Peter Radford of Beyond This, provided an opportunity for students and teachers to hear first-hand about the reality of growing up in the UK as a black, Asian or minority ethnic person. Participants heard from local Bournemouth surgeon Mukhtar Ahmad about his experience of systemic bias in the NHS right here in Dorset and how, together with conference co-host and biomedical scientist Joy Johnson, he has worked to establish a BAME network at the University Hospitals Trust in Bournemouth and Poole. Another highlight was keynote speaker Lee Lawrence. Lee was 11 years old when his mother Cherry Groce was shot in front of him by police officers in Brixton in 1985. Lee spoke powerfully of his own journey in seeking justice and his work promoting Restorative Justice as a means to bring people and cultures together. Beyond This founder and conference director Peter Radford says, “Our society is losing the ability to listen openly and dialogue with people who have a different experience to our own. Today was a chance to listen and recognise that we all have a part to play in building a fairer future.” The past couple of years have exposed in alarming ways just how much racism still pervades society and remains inherent in the national consciousness, institutions and systems. Racial inequality is undeniable, and recent events have brought this fact to the fore. The power of social media to /company/dorset-chamber/

inform about and expose injustice has galvanised a generation. However, its power to misinform and exacerbate echo-chambers which undermine meaningful dialogue and engagement has the potential to nullify calls for change and create further division. As leaders and employers we have a responsibility to ensure equity by establishing systems and policies that facilitate change and equal opportunity. But the fact is we all have blind spots; in Britain, we’re all products of a majority-white society that is inherently biased. So how on earth can we go about building equitable businesses? “The first task is just to listen,” says Peter. “And that’s what this conference was about: listening to the lived experience of people of colour in the UK and being willing to recognise the part we each may have unwittingly played in exacerbating unjust systems and practices.” The conference, run in liaison with Amnesty International UK and Unicef UK, and sponsored by Dorset-based employability skills company the Young People Index inspired students and schools to be proactive in making sure that black, Asian and minority ethnic voices are heard in every part of society. Conference recordings are available for purchase from Beyond This. In next month’s magazine look out for Peter’s article on the three essential steps businesses can take to tackle systemic racism in the workplace and build a fairer a society. Tim Brown MBE, Managing Director at Superior

Dorset manufacturer set to expand workforce following £3 million investment in machinery Dorset-based manufacturer Superior is set to strengthen its workforce by more than 10 per cent after investing £3 million, its largest cash expenditure to date, in the latest state-ofthe-art machinery to boost its manufacturing capacity. The family-run manufacturer and supplier of high integrity o-rings and seals, based on the Ferndown Industrial Estate, serves a growing global customer base. The significant investment in the latest seal manufacturing and inspection technology, to increase manufacturing output, has generated a range of job roles including machine operators and production operatives, to control the machinery and fulfil orders. Tim Brown MBE, managing director of Superior, said: “In line with our growth strategy and to meet an increasing demand for our products, we are making a substantial investment in our machinery and personnel to allow for increased output and shorter lead times.” “Our continued investment in technology, people and material science will help us achieve the growth in capacity and capability we need to support increasing customer orders, futureproof our business and ensure we can continue to offer our customers a high-quality service.” Superior aims to run the business in a responsible and sustainable way and this new machinery aligns with these goals as it creates less waste material, conserves water and CO2. This latest technology – alongside increased levels of recycling and reduced waste – has helped the company achieve a CO2 reduction more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

of 113.5 tonnes (29.21%) so far this year. In addition to the newly created full-time roles available, the company’s award-winning Academy is looking for manufacturing trainees to join the team. As a trainee, Superior will support and fully fund the education, training, and professional development of an individual and will award a Level 2 NVQ in Performing Manufacturing Operations on completion. Tim added: “We are pleased to have an opportunity to expand our workforce even further, with not only full-time recruits but also manufacturing trainees, to bolster our current 192-strong team. We pride ourselves on being a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable place to work, and this latest investment in machinery will not only increase our production rates but will help us achieve an even more stimulating working environment. We rely on machinery in every aspect of our work, but they will never replace the people that we recruit for the job.” “It’s so important to us that a career at Superior is highly motivating, and the best people need the best environment in which to thrive. We want every employee to be fully engaged in the work that they do and learn new skills at every stage of their career progression.”

2021 has been one hell of a year, the most challenging of my 17 years in recruitment; with Covid causing disruption to businesses, sickness and anxiety amongst candidates and employees at an all-time high, a record high level of active job vacancies (nearly 2,7m) and a post-Brexit immigration policy to contend with, it really has been a period of challenges, changes and innovation. I recently ran a poll on LinkedIn asking what we should expect in relation to Job Vacancies in 2022, and 81% of respondents replied that they expect a further increase in available job roles. So, what is the solution? Unfortunately, I don’t think there is an easy answer; we should see some people come back on to the market on completion of seasonal contracts, but I firmly believe that market stabilisation will take a few years and will require many changes in business strategies going forward. In my opinion, the change should be a combination of reviewing the national benefits system, amendments to current immigration policy giving individuals access to temporary work visas regardless of sector or skills, a review of the education system and automation of the processes. I am sure there will be a variety of opinions as we all try to establish ourselves in this new reality. Mploy have made many changes to our business in 2021 and have been extremely innovative in trying new solutions, and this has opened up many opportunities within new candidate markets and we shall continue this approach in 2022. The team at Mploy would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Kat Mieszkowska, Chief Operating Officer Mploy Staffing Solutions kat@mploystaff.com | www.mploystaff.com

International Trade Updates Changes when moving goods in and out of the UK from 1st January 2022 At 12.01am on 1st January 2022 additional rules and procedures will be coming into force that will affect all UK importers and exporters moving goods between the EU and beyond. Dorset Chamber are at the forefront of supporting businesses navigating these changes. We are here to ensure businesses remain in the know with what to expect, and more importantly, how to prepare your business. Upcoming changes include: The end of delayed declarations: From the 1st January 2021, importers were allowed 175 days before the full (supplementary) import declaration needed to be submitted, VAT and duty (if any) to be paid. We understand that the delayed declaration facility will end on 1st January 2022, but we are awaiting notice from HMRC to confirm this. Rules of Origin: From the 1st January 2021, the EU and UK customs authorities agreed that they would not request proof of origin for goods. This will change on 1st January 2022. All exporters and importers must be able to prove the original manufacturing country for the goods they are shipping. Furthermore, they will be able to retrospectively request proof for goods that were shipped during 2021. REX – Invoice Statements – Declaration of Origin: If you are importing goods into the UK from a country or bloc with whom we have a free

trade agreement (FTA), your overseas supplier will need to declare the goods originated in their country. Each FTA will have an official notification in the documentation. It could be a statement on the invoice, a Certificate of Origin, a preferential trade certificate, a supplier’s declaration, a trusted trader status (Registered Exporter (REX), Approved Exporter (AE) or Authorised Economic Operator (AEO)) or the goods originate in a GSP country. Whatever it is, you as the importer of record must show HMRC that you have done sufficient due diligence to prove the goods you are importing meet FTA preference rules. As this is a new chapter in our relationship with the EU, from 1st January 2022 all suppliers from Europe must have a REX authorisation. The REX registered number must be shown on their Commercial Invoice for the goods to enter the UK duty free. Any goods arriving at the UK customs border point without the REX authorisation number will have an import duty charge if the products’ commodity code carries duty. It is important that all businesses bring this to the attention of all their EU suppliers. It is very easy to get REX authorisation and it is free. UK companies exporting to the EU should continue to put the officially worded origin

declaration on their commercial invoices. For the rest of the world UK-EUR1 preferential trade certificates, Certificates of Origin, invoice statement declarations, long term supplier’s declarations or a trusted trader status (REX, AE, AEO) etc will be used to prove origin. Products of Animal Origin (POAO), Sanitary and Phytosanitary products: Sanitary products are for animal health, and certification is required to determine the health of the animals. A Phytosanitary certificate is for Plants and Fauna. These are referred to as SPS checks. POAO relates mainly to the food chain sector, however it also includes other industry sectors such as products from leather, gelatine, etc. From 1st January 2022, UK importers of Products of Animal Origin, animal by-products, high-risk food, and feed not of animal origin, must pre-notify UK import authorities of incoming consignments. Shipments coming from the EU or European Economic Area must pre-notify UK import authorities before the consignment is due to arrive in Great Britain. Exporting POAO from the EU to UK From 1st January 2022, an Export Health Certificate (EHC) will be required for exports of POAO from the EU into the UK. EU exporters must be registered on TRACES NT (TNT) to apply for an EHC. TRACES NT is the European Commission’s digital certification and management platform for all sanitary and phytosanitary requirements. Importing POAO into the UK From 1st January 2022, UK importers must be registered with IPAFFS (Import of Products, Animals, Food, and Feed System) and are responsible for the import. They must have a UK address and are responsible for submitting the pre-notification of incoming consignments with the attached EHC via IPAFFS before the consignment is due to arrive. IPAFFS is a web-based service used to notify UK authorities of imports of live animals, their products, and germplasm.

Growing Digital Digital technology. Love it or hate it, it’s become an integral part of life if you’re running a business. It doesn’t matter what sector you’re in, you’ll have digital touchpoints that require investment – in hardware, software, or those whose job it is to operate it. The last 20 months have highlighted the important place that technology has in business. It can help build resilience, boost sales or productivity, reduce costs and improve efficiency. But not everyone in business finds it easy to embrace technology. Some businesses still struggle to get started and worse, some end up doing digital badly. Think about it, how many infinite loops of artificially intelligent customer services have you been stuck in over the past six months - when all you really wanted was to speak to a real person? Deliver digital well and no one really notices but, do it badly and you can find yourself losing customers and damaging your businesses brand. There’s good news though. If you’re not in that hard-earned position where your digital service is so slick it’s invisible, there’s a new government initiative launching this month. It’s the second part of the government’s Help to Grow programme; the digital sibling of the Help to Grow: Management offering that launched in October - both of which are designed to help SMEs recover from the pandemic. 42

How to support an employee with long Covid? Long Covid is a term that is used when a person who has had Covid-19 experiences ongoing symptoms following infection. As with any situation where an employee is unwell, the question of whether they are fit for work doesn’t have to be a binary “fit” or “not fit”. It may be that the employee is well enough to undertake some work but not their full hours (through a phased return), or another adjustment, such as ensuring they do not have to be too physically active and/or are able to take regular breaks, may enable them to return. Importantly, mental health may be an effect of any long-term condition, and that anxiety and depression can be symptoms of Long Covid. It is important that employers consider how they can support mental health as well as physical wellbeing. Under the Equality Act 2010, an individual is classified as having a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on their ability to do normal daily activities. Whilst Long Covid is a relatively new condition and not formally recognised as a disability, if an individual with Long Covid meets the following tests, because of Long Covid, they may be regarded by an Employment Tribunal as being disabled: • Does the person have a physical or mental impairment? • Does that impairment have an adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities? • Is that effect substantial? • Is that effect long-term? If an employee has a disability, they are entitled to reasonable adjustments to remove or reduce the effects of their disability. Employers who do not fulfil their responsibilities may face disability discrimination claims. 8.9 million working days were lost last year due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders One factor that organisations have to consider is, over the course of lockdown, many employees have got themselves into bad habits, such as working from a dining room table or from the sofa. Consequently, the number of musculoskeletal problems being reported is on the rise. In fact, according to the HSE 2020 report 480,000 workers suffered from workrelated musculoskeletal disorders last year and 8.9 million working days were lost. With numerous companies still recovering from the impact of COVID-19, many cannot afford to lose these working days. As a direct response to the widespread need for reliable, free advice, Osmond Ergonomics, leading supplier of ergonomic furniture and wellbeing-focussed services, is making its proven Stretching Guide freely available. This handy document provides eight stretches for sedentary workers and aims to improve flexibility and decrease risk of injury. “Originally designed by the late Sheila Lee,

MErgS. D.O., our Stretching Guide has been one of our staple resources for nearly 20 years. Since the first lockdown of 2020, we have identified rapidly-growing numbers of homeworkers suffering from back, neck and upper limb problems. We may not be able to give you more space at home - or put a window in that blank wall you look at every day - or replace those serendipitous office interactions you miss so much - but we can help you benefit from some really simple exercises that you can do at any time,” said Guy Osmond, Managing Director at Osmond Ergonomics. Whilst Osmond Ergonomics provides office and home office furniture to businesses as well as individuals, their core value, ‘focus on the outcome, not the sale’,

differentiates them from other furniture suppliers. Aside from the Stretching Guide, they also provide posture resources, DSE Assessor courses and free webinars to ensure that their wellbeing-focussed approach is maintained. www.ergonomics.co.uk

TDSi’s Higher-Level Apprentice reflects upon first years’ experience Integrated security manufacturer TDSi’s first higher-level apprentice, trainee Product Engineer Oscar Johnson, has been reflecting on the experience and benefits he has enjoyed during the first year working at the company’s Headquarters in Poole, Dorset. Oscar recently started his second year of study for a Higher National Certificate (HNC) at Bournemouth and Poole College and will continue as a Degree Apprentice for a further four years, with a permanent role at TDSi alongside his studies. Reflecting on his first year on the HNC course (where he impressively earned a Distinction grade) and at TDSi, Oscar commented, “It’s been quite a year to be studying and entering the working world, punctuated by a number of UK pandemic lockdowns and the need to support our partners and customers during the most unusual of times. However, it has been a superb learning experience and I am pleased to have been sharing it with the team at TDSi.” Along with practical technical experience, Oscar has also enjoyed an introduction to the commercial world of the security industry, balanced with one day a week of college study time. “I have had to react to constant challenges, many of which were unexpected. Certainly, the unpredicted pandemic challenges have added to this and have helped me to refine my problem-

solving skills, aligning the technology needs with the requirements of a commercial business that must stay profitable and dependable.” Oscar has been involved with a variety of TDSi systems, including the latest GARDiS access controllers and software testing. “I have been involved with an interesting selection of development projects, including regression testing and updating the firmware on readers. Every week brings a new set of challenges which let me play my part in the wider picture, which I really enjoy.” As the company’s first higher-level apprentice, the TDSi team has equally been appreciative of Oscar’s contributions and enthusiasm, as John Davies, Managing Director of TDSi also commented, “Bringing on a more qualified apprentice has obvious benefits to our business as well as for Oscar himself. We can brief him on certain tasks and let him get on with the project, which is obviously helpful to our whole work schedule. Oscar has also brought new perspectives to problem solving which have enriched our team, this really is a win-win situation for us all.” Joining TDSi right in the middle of the pandemic has given Oscar an even broader experience of the commercial world, as he elaborated, “There have been obvious

Oscar Johnson, Trainee Product Engineer at TDSi

challenges of working with hardware whilst the restrictions were in place, but like the rest of the team I had a rota, which gave me two days working at Headquarters for these tasks. I could then work from home on other aspects, in much the same way as I did for my college work.” Now in his second year as TDSi’s high-level apprentice, Oscar has a clear impression of the benefits of building his career this way, as he concluded, “Being an apprentice has been a big bonus. I was open to any relevant opportunities that were offered, but I am particularly happy to have entered the security sector! TDSi has been perfect for this, we have a small enough team not to get lost in the crowd but the expertise, technical excellence, and agile working to help me develop the way I work. Being an apprentice is a brilliant experience, providing a good balance of work, college, and life.” www.tdsi.co.uk

Workwear Pro Direct & Bobby’s of Bournemouth adopt new sustainable clothing range Within our industry a huge challenge that we face is how to make sustainably made products more available and affordable to our customers. Workwear Pro Direct were recently delighted to work with Bobby & Co in Bournemouth. Our brief was to supply them with branded uniforms from some of our favourite eco-conscious products. For the Bobby’s team, sustainability isn’t just a fad, they aspire for it to be core to their everyday activities. Knowing how important it was to provide Bobby’s with high quality, sustainable and ethical uniform, we found the perfect colour matches with our loved and trusted brands – Continental Clothing and Stanley/Stella. The Beauty Hall teams slate green uniform is part of our Continental Clothing ‘Earthpositive’ collection. It is produced exclusively from organic Indian cotton, and the entire production process is controlled and certified in accordance with the latest version of Global Organic Standards. All Earth positive products are also manufactured using facilities powered by renewable energy. The Ice Cream Parlour’s uniform is part of our Natural Raw collection meaning it is completely free from dyes. If you look closely, you can see that each garment reflects the true colour of the cotton plant itself, showing tiny specks of more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

the original plant, including seed particles! This additional texture really appealed to the Bobby’s team and only added to the appearance and authenticity of their uniforms. By using Stanley/Stella’s Natural Raw products this also minimizes the environmental impact. A gentler spinning process consumes less energy than traditional spinning and preserves the flecks of the original cotton plant. With no dyes involved, fewer chemicals, water and energy are used. Both teams uniform used for the Ice Cream Parlour and Beauty Hall also comply with Fair

Wear Foundation code of labour practices. At Workwear Pro Direct we work hard to promote these fantastic, and more sustainable products to our customers. We were therefore thrilled when we received this customer feedback: “We were so happy with the fantastic uniform that Workwear Pro Direct made for us. The quality of the clothing is really high, and the customer service was brilliant. We will definitely be ordering from them again.” www.workwearprodirect.com

Help your employees have a heart healthy Christmas Christmas and New Year are joyful annual celebrations, but an expert at Nuffield Health Bournemouth suggests they should come with a health warning. Over-indulgence, stress, lack of exercise all combined with the chilly weather make the festive season the worst time of year for heart health. A growing body of research has shown that heart attacks are more common in the winter months. Keeping the heart healthy is a key ingredient to overall wellness, and as a result Dr Suneel Talwar, consultant cardiologist at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, is urging employers to play their part to inspire the workforce to get heart-healthy now ahead of the festive break. Dr Suneel Talwar said: “Winter is perhaps the worst time of year for the heart. Aside from the cold weather, which can make arteries constrict reducing blood flow and the delivery of oxygen to the heart, over-indulgence in high-fat foods and alcohol as well as neglecting regular exercise during the festive period can increase the risk of triggering a heart attack. An attack is caused when there’s a blockage in one of the heart’s arteries and this blockage can be caused by deposits of cholesterol or a blood clot. “There are many key risk factors for heart attacks which are modifiable through lifestyle

changes. These include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and being overweight. Unfortunately, we cannot alter increasing age and our family history, however we can all take steps to protect our heart health. “As more companies are realising the importance of employee health, many of them are helping employees adopt more healthy habits. December is a great time to spread awareness in the workplace on how to embrace heart-healthy habits to prevent heart problems as well as provide motivation for how to make behavioural changes that lead a healthier lifestyle. Dr Suneel Talwar shared his top simple steps to assist your employees in improving their cardiovascular wellbeing in readiness for the Christmas break: Get people moving - Physical activity helps lower blood pressure, control weight and reduce stress. Therefore, you should create a work environment that is conducive to regular movement. Perhaps provide access to fitness equipment, gym membership, and an outdoor space as exercise can help to reduce stress levels. Serve healthy snacks - Supply healthy snack options at work, such as fruits. Eating

healthy snacks can help to lower cholesterol. Offer guidance to those who wish to quit smoking - smoking damages the lining of the arteries, causes inflammation, and makes the blood more prone to clotting. Signpost employees to support groups that can provide advice on how to stop smoking. Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital has a dedicated cardiology service which is able to fully assess the blood vessels of the heart and treat critical narrowing’s if required. This can be done through a variety of investigations such as a pioneering cardiac CT scanner, a state-ofthe-art cardiac MRI scanner, echocardiogram and an angiogram. Furthermore, critical narrowing’s of blood vessels supplying the heart can be treated through the implantation of stents, which will open up the artery. Snow Tyres Check, Eggnog check, Voip Exchange check: 6 ways cloud tech can create the perfect home-working environment this winter COVID forced businesses into working from home before all were ready, but in the wake of the pandemic, technology that enabled the world to keep spinning was brought to light and shadowed dusty old systems that no longer serve us. And now with unpredictable health and weather on the season’s horizon, here’s our top 6 tips for easy tech changes to help keep flexible working successful, should you need it. Get a cloud telephony service. These can actually save you money on minutes, materials and maintenance, but unfortunately most businesses don’t have them for any reason other than because they are locked into long contracts with old-school systems. So, check out what the limitations and features are of your system and ask your provider to move you to a cloud-based system instead. Challenge your provider to include the extras: Why not combine productivity into one solution? Platforms like Voip Exchange offer video conferencing and audioconferencing facilities plus the mobile and computer apps all in one. These solutions are scalable so help accommodate change for additional or staff changes, and you can keep bills predictable with bundled minutes too! Get some space by hiding your personal number: Just like it’s important to create a designated physical area as a zone for focussing on work and leaving it there and switching back 50

to home-mode, your communications should have working hours and zones also. Solutions like Voip Exchange have desktop app and mobile apps so you don’t even need your desk phone handset, you can make calls and answer from multiple devices, without the requirement to use your personal mobile/landline numbers – simply open the app and you’re away! And when your operating hours end, you won’t be disturbed. Leave the house at least once a day: It can be easy when working from home to not take breaks in their entirety or benefit from the fresh air that may have come with a commute. Step out onto the balcony, in the garden or go for a short walk, there’s no need to be tied to your desk with cloud technology at hand. Get a sufficient internet service. We recommend chatting with your provider to help ensure you have enough bandwidth to manage your work requirements. Try and use a wired ethernet connection direct from your router to your computer if you can so you don’t suffer from depending on WiFi which can be temperamental dependant on house size, interfering objects etc. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to access usual servers/sites as though you’re in the office. Check if you can get a line installed dedicated for your work, so you don’t need to share the bandwidth with the kids streaming Elf or Home Alone this Christmas holidays - Voip Unlimited offer Broadband solutions that can be fully business expensed (did you /company/dorset-chamber/

know you no longer need to pay for phone line rental when purchasing an internet connection, with our new Broadband products)! Benefit beyond just this winter/ pandemic from these IT upgrades: In 2025 Openreach will start to retire old copper phone lines, so you won’t be able to order new copper (PSTN) lines, Telecom providers will start to withdraw old lines in order to transition people to new VoIP technology over fibre lines. Yes, we will face a transition, yes everyone will have to change, no, you needn’t be worried. Friendly local providers like Voip Unlimited can help businesses feel no pain and just gain from getting ahead of the queue. By upgrading to VoIP (like cloud telephony platform Voip Exchange) and updating your broadband you can allow other vital business facilities to be accessed and benefit from them well in advance of 2025 rather than being forced to adapt at pace. Voip Unlimited, based in Poole, have been helping business transition to improved technologies for over 15 years. Give the team a call today and discuss how to get your business ready for all eventualities. www.voip-unlimited.net

Run safe this winter with these 5 top tips All those hours of darkness can make it hard to motivate yourself to get out of the house and do some exercise. Safety is a valid concern too if you’re planning on doing something like running in the dark. But staying active during the winter months is so important for both your physical and mental wellbeing. “Running is a great overall exercise for many people, but it’s important you stay safe in the winter months,” says Paul O’Connell, founder and lead physiotherapist at Bridge Health & Wellbeing in Christchurch, Dorset. “Whether you are an early riser that likes a jog to start the day, or trying to squeeze in a run after work, you need to take extra precautions. Here are 5 top tips to keep you safe whilst running in the dark: Be seen and stay visible by illuminating yourself. There are loads of options to help you be seen, so try what works for you. Head torches, clip-on lights, safety vests and reflective armbands and more. You can find plenty of products online or pop into Christchurch’s new Alexandra Sports store for a great range of products. Run together. Running with a club or a friend is not only safer but it’s also great for motivation and more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

support. It can hold you accountable to exercise, even on the days when you really don’t feel like it. There are lots of local running clubs across Dorset, including local ones in individual towns, women’s only groups and those that are more social. Ask at your local leisure centre or simply search online. Choose a well-lit route so you can be seen and see your surroundings. When running in the dark you want to make sure that potential hazards like cars can see you. But you also need to be able to see where you are going, so that you can avoid trip hazards. Selecting a route that is well-lit not only means vehicles can pass safely, but also means that you are less likely to fall. Always run against the flow of traffic. This allows you to see vehicles coming towards you on the same side of the road. Particularly in the dark, their headlights will give you an extra warning. Always try and move out of the

way of cars if you can, for example, stepping onto the pavement if you’re on the road. Don’t assume that vehicles will see you in time to avoid you. Put your own safety first. If you are running on your own, tell someone that you are going out and stick to populated routes. Try to mix up your route. Not only is this good for your training, but it is also a safer option as your routine becomes less predictable. Let someone know when you are going and when you expect to be back, as well as advise them of your safe return. This simple message could make a big difference. It gives you the reassurance that someone is waiting for you to get home safe. Running in the winter also means colder and potentially wetter conditions than in summer. Making you have suitable equipment and warm-up and down properly is so important to avoid injury.” www.bridgehw.com 51

5 Instagram trends to help your business grow

Instagram has contributed to Total Guide to group and Total Guide to Poole exceed pre pandemic levels of website traffic, social reach and revenue.

We know only too well, however, that the task of managing and updating accounts can be daunting, time consuming and costly. So, we’ve listed the current trends that are working well for us and how you can quickly and simply apply them to create a winning Instagram strategy. The Rise of Reels We’re possibly even a little late to the party on this but we’re seeing huge benefits already. Each of our Reels are viewed by 3,000+, compared to an average of 841 views per regular post. This is because they sit in the Explore tab along with IGTV and Shop, so people don’t have to be following you to view your posts. This functionality is growing rapidly in popularity so it’s a great time to jump on this as it’s not cluttered, but you still have a large and engaged potential audience there. The algorithm behind the Explore tab tracks users browsing habits (what you search for, like, and view for example), therefore you’ll be more likely to gain new, quality followers. They’re a little more time consuming but you’ll soon get into the swing of things. Look at what similar businesses are doing, practice and try doing one reel a week and you’ll soon pick up the pace. Be Authentic You no longer have to spend £££ on professional imagery and corporate videos. Yes, they have their place, but Instagram is a platform for honesty and transparency. You build a loyal and trusting community by producing unfiltered content. Why not add a story or reel of some funny ‘out takes’ from a team meeting? Or if you’re being affected by supply issues for example, get out in front of it; share your problem, offer alternatives, ask for feedback, explain, show how you’re trying to overcome, or ask how others are solving the issue - in other words be human! By being honest you’re making yourself hugely relatable to your audience.

audience. You can search for and approach relevant influencers in your sector or region, pay for native advertising or offer affiliate links. Remember it’s not always about quantity, it’s more often about the quality of their audience. Hashtags continue to make a big impact Hashtags essentially help your users find your content faster. You can include 30 hashtags per post and the maximum we still tend to see per post is around seven. That’s a large potential still untapped. Popular hashtags like #instagood and #beautiful will generate immediate engagement but remember to still be true to your target audience and who you want to be engaging with your post. If you add popular hashtags to an irrelevant post it will scream ‘spam’ and have a negative impact. Don’t add a hashtag like #dog if it’s totally irrelevant to your stories. Try and balance your hashtags with relevant popular tags, industry specific, and niche specific (in our case location ie. Poole, Dorset, South Coast etc). Stories Stories continue to be the most digested form of content on Instagram (Instagram released a statistic of daily usage of 500m people in 2020 so this will be even higher now) yet we still find brands aren’t tapping in

to this super quick and effective feature. Each time you add a story you are making sure your business keeps popping up again and again, thus encouraging your audience to continue to view your content. This constant reminder is a great touch point for prospecting and for keeping you top of mind with your consumers. For added engagement try using polls and questions now and again. Ones to Watch for 2022 I want to make these tips easily digestible for you to implement, but it would be remiss of me not to highlight the importance of Instagram Shop (Shoppable posts) and IGTV. Instagram is clearly paying attention to the growing popularity of TikTok and tweaking Instagram to meet these new demands and video marketing has never been more widely used as a sales tool. I’ll share more on this in due course - keep watching! All my tips are achievable either by yourself or your team however if you do feel overwhelmed by juggling social with your other tasks, we can help to lessen the load. We’re able to manage this for you.

www.totalguidetopoole.com

Onboard Relatable Influencers If you’re not already working with Influencers then this needs to be something you implement; it will vary your content, help you reach new audiences and grow your network. Many businesses we speak to have avoided this due to the perception that they’ll need a huge budget for an Influencer with 1m+ followers. This is not necessary for smaller companies. ‘Micro Influencers’ are receiving great attention - again for the authenticity of their posts and 52

MSP Capital champions property auction growth with bridging loan launch A Poole-based property finance specialist is championing renewed confidence in UK real estate with the launch of a bridging loan product aimed at the growing property auction market. MSP Capital’s new Property Auction Finance Loan is specifically tailored to those looking to buy residential properties at auctions with rates starting from 0.54% per month. The product is available to private individuals, joint borrowers, limited companies and LLPs. It applies to all residential property types that are vacant, let on AST (assured shorthold tenancy) or in need of refurbishment, with commercial properties considered on a case-by-case basis. The launch comes amid a huge rise in UK property auction activity. According to the latest EIG report, £539.5 million worth of property was sold at auction in September 2021, a 15% hike in value compared to the same month in 2020. At the same time, Google search engine data has shown a 50% rise in enquiries about property auctions over the past year. Chris Wright, auction product lead at MSP Capital said: “We’ve been providing bridging loans for many years and, based on lots of conversations with borrowers and prospective borrowers, people are telling us they are really keen for MSP Capital to offer this kind of finance specifically for property auctions. “The stamp duty holiday combined with the migration to online auctions due to the pandemic has spurred many would-be homeowners to choose the auction route over estate agents. “It is a truly dynamic market and not only for investors or developers. Interest in auctions from all kinds of buyers is growing faster

than other parts of the property sector. “People are attracted by the speed of potential sales and the ease of bidding online that has opened up in the past 18 months as traditional auctioneers have responded to evolving customer demand for digital-first solutions.” With timing such an all-important factor when it comes to property auctions, MSP Capital has ensured its Property Auction Finance Loan can be pre-arranged, giving bidders the confidence that funds are in place before the gavel, or auctioneer’s hammer, falls to indicate a binding contract. In addition, MSP Capital’s streamlined onboarding process helps ensure that funds can be drawn down in less than 28 days to meet the typical auction payment deadline. As an additional bonus, the new loan product comes with zero exit fee options, fixed legal fees and no valuation fee for properties worth less than £1 million. Clients can borrow up to 70% loan-to-value on residential properties, with a maximum single property value of £3 million. Martin Higgins, Managing Director at MSP Capital, said: “This is all about expanding our product range so we can continue to offer flexible, tailored solutions to our clients. “Our team have worked hard to launch the Property Auction Finance Loan in line with the clear market demand we see. “The product is the latest of several specialist bridging loans we have launched

recently, including our Development Exit Loan, which is designed to help developers crystallise their profit and keep moving forward on their next project. “Look out for more product launches next year as we continue to go from strength to strength.” www.mspcapital.co.uk
