We are also witnessing a cost-of-living crisis, falling exports, soaring energy costs, spiralling inflation and interest rates, supply chain issues and ongoing recruitment challenges for businesses. It all sounds pretty bleak if you listen to the media for too long. However, I speak to many businesses and I often get a different perspective, a definite sense people are fed up with the doom and gloom and are keen to get on with things. In November, we held one of our Dorset Chamber Business Exhibitions, open to all businesses. The event, over two floors at AFC Bournemouth, was absolutely packed and alive with energy. I spoke to so many people who all said they really enjoyed the event and the positivity and enthusiasm of the day but are fed up with the general negativity reported by the media.

Of course, it’s a very challenging climate, without doubt, and we face a very difficult couple of years. We must be realistic. But I believe it is vital businesses continue to develop their resilience and positive, can-do attitude that they consistently demonstrate.

Of course, businesses need to keep costs down, manage cashflow and perhaps diversify and look at new markets. But it’s vital we all keep moving forward with our plans and aspirations, treat other businesses properly in terms of paying bills on time and support each other where we can. That ethos is at the heart of Dorset Chamber. Things will get better and we must move forward in a positive way.

I’d like to thank all the businesses that work with us for your continued support. It is greatly appreciated. It’s been a challenging few years for our business community but the camaraderie, support and friendship I see on a daily basis is inspiring. We’ll continue to do the very best we can for businesses.

I wish you and your loved ones a very happy, peaceful Christmas and my best wishes for a positive, successful New Year, both professionally and personally.

Cargo First eyes further growth from Bournemouth Airport

Bournemouth Airport’s dedicated cargo handling operation, Cargo First, is looking forward to playing an increasingly important role as an international trading gateway, not just for Dorset but for the UK.

Cargo First was born in May 2020 out of the need to import millions of items of personal protective equipment for the NHS during the pandemic. But, within months, it had also established new export trade lanes to North America after the Covid-related collapse in trans-Atlantic passenger traffic had a huge impact on available freight capacity.

Since then, Cargo First has gone from strength to strength, proving that Bournemouth Airport is a viable alternative London gateway for commercial air cargo, especially to and from South-East Asia and the USA.

That includes supporting UK industry, whether it’s British tyres destined for the North American Indie Car circuit, exporting Scottish seafood, or high value UKmanufactured goods around the world.

Its key selling points are location, flexibility, and speed. Compared with the congested London hub airports, Bournemouth offers freight customers total flexibility, speedy access to market and a ‘One Team’ approach which means the cargo ownership chain is as short as it can be.

The airport is also home to European

Cargo, which is in the process of converting several Airbus A340 passenger aircraft into the UK’s largest fleet of long-haul wide-bodied freighters, with six aircraft expected to enter service early next year and more in the pipeline.

And the Cargo First Logistics Park at the airport has over one million square feet of warehousing development potential, including new build and repurposing opportunities both airside and landside,

from 15,000 square feet upwards.

Steve Gill, managing director of Bournemouth Airport, said: “We’re on the cusp of further growth and new jobs as the speed and flexibility of our Cargo First operation continues to gain traction. And with one million square feet of development potential, we’re confident of growing a strategic freight hub that will benefit Dorset and the UK.”

Poole Harbour Commissioners and Port of Poole

Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) is a trust port, established by an Act of Parliament in 1895, with responsibility for the management of Port of Poole and Poole Harbour, for which PHC is the statutory harbour authority.

As a trust port, PHC receives no regular funding towards its day-to-day operations from either central or local government and, with no shareholders, re-invests all its profits back into the maintenance of the port and harbour and the development of new facilities for its commercial and leisure customers.

The Port

The Port of Poole is a successful commercial trust port, handling a wide variety of vessels including:

• Cross-channel ferry services to France, the Channel Islands and Spain

• Cruise ships

• Container cargo vessels including regular twice-weekly services to the Channel Islands

• Bulk-cargo vessels carrying cargos such as steel, timber, stone, clay, sand, bricks and grain shipments

• Yacht transport vessels

The port estate is also home to a wide range of commercial companies engaged in marine-related activities including ferry companies, luxury yacht builders and re-fitters, marine civil engineers, shipping agents, steel fabrication and road-hauliers.

The port provides regular employment for both PHC staff and the commercial operators on the port, directly supporting several thousand jobs.

Port of Poole handles around 30,000 freight units and 400,000 passengers

annually. A new multi-purpose berth, South Quay, was constructed in 2018, giving the port the ability to handle larger vessels, up to around 210 metres in length.

Poole Quay Boat Haven and Port of Poole Marina

PHC owns and manages two marinas within its leisure division. Poole Quay Boat Haven provides facilities for local fishermen and visiting leisure boat owners and the Port of Poole Marina focuses on providing permanent berthing facilities for the local boating sector. Both marinas hold 5 Gold Anchor status.

Poole Quay Boat Haven hosts numerous yacht races and yacht-club rallies each summer, bringing significant numbers of visitors to Poole. The marina is also the UK home-base for the international solo yachtswoman, Pip Hare, and her racing yacht Medallia.

The Harbour Poole Harbour is one of the outstanding features of the UK coastline. The harbour has major environmental significance and has been designated as a Wetlands Site of International Importance under the Ramsar convention, a site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area.

Poole Harbour is home to a large number of leisure yachts, as well as being regularly used by kite-surfers, windsurfers and kayakers. PHC operates regular harbour patrols to ensure the safety of all harbour

users and enforce the harbour bye-laws.

PHC has a clear understanding of its environmental responsibilities and plays a leading role in the environmental stewardship of the harbour. PHC is a major partner in the Great Heath Living Landscape Project, a partnership with Dorset Wildlife Trust, the Erica Trust, Borough of Poole, Dorset County Council and the Amphibian Reptile Conservation Trust. PHC owns land within the environmentally sensitive area of Holes Bay which is managed as part of a major, local conservation partnership initiative, the Holes Bay Nature Park. The chief executive chairs the Poole Harbour Steering Group, which involves key organisations and statutory agencies connected with the harbour.

The big trade slow: varying freight rates in the international market

The global supply chain relies on a complicated network of multi-modal transport and interchanging components that need to function together, in harmony, for the chain to work. Any one variable, such as bad weather conditions delaying a ship, port and airspace congestion or, indeed, the global pandemic, can send a cascade of disruption down the supply chain.

Over time, these events, along with other factors (inflation, lack of resources and raw materials, supply and demand), can lead to an increase in the operational costs of aircraft, ships and road hauliers affecting the price at which our cargo is shipped from one country to another.

Over the past few years, freight rates have been on a steep and steady incline with 2021 seeing peaks well above predictions, meaning the cost of shipping cargo has been elevated for quite some time now. This year, however, some sectors are experiencing the opposite – with a precipitous fall in container shipping and airfreight rates defying market predictions.

Container shipping

In container shipping, the sudden drop in freight rates is thought to be attributable to the easing of supply chains following the pandemic but has, perhaps, been enhanced by the current status of the global economy.

To put this ‘drop’ into perspective, some container liners have reported a 50% decrease in the costs of a vessel’s operational charges attributable to a twenty-foot container (TEU) as compared to the rates in December 2021. Whilst decreasing container spot freight

rates is welcome news for businesses and importers, generally speaking, the current rates do remain at a notable elevation compared with pre-pandemic levels. It remains to be seen whether or not they will drop below the pre-pandemic rates in 2023 but, as matters stand, there is no clear stabilising in sight and carriers and freight forwarders are struggling to effectively manage their resources by going so far as suspending entire services across some routes.

In terms of what we can expect to see next, HSBC predicts that container freight rates will experience a further decline in 2023 to 2024, and have therefore cut profit estimates for some container lines between 2022 to 2024 by up to 51%.

Air cargo

In the airfreight industry, a similar rate of decline is being experienced but, perhaps most apparent, is the sudden lack of demand from end consumers, indicative of global inflation, high-interest rates and the ‘cost of living crisis’. The European market is thought to be the most affected by this downturn, possibly amplified by airspace bans from the war in Ukraine and additional fuel costs.

Despite this, air carriers appear to continue investing in air freight capabilities, with Maersk being a recent entrant into the market and Boeing selling off their wider aircraft, following great demand for refurbished passenger planes for air freight purposes. This growth is thought to be a natural consequence of the growth of international e-commerce and the demand for shorter delivery times,

Road haulage

In the UK, road haulage also presents some uncertainty where we have experienced a distinct lack of HGV drivers, driving road carriage rates on an upward trend and causing excessive delays in delivery times. The TEG Road Transport Price Index has recorded a three-year high in road courier prices with haulage prices also picking up due to increases in fuel costs and a shortage in labour.

Bulk cargo shipping

In the bulk cargo sector, we are experiencing the opposite to container spot rates, with some commodities starting to boom as part of usual supply and demand price determination economics. The recent global shift in diversifying fuel sources and optimising renewables has led to a significant increase in demand for liquefied natural gas (one of the UK’s biggest current imports). LNG carrier spot rates are now reporting rate increases of more than 100% across the US-Gulf route to Europe.

Sum up

All in all, international trade is steady, but commodity and industry-specific. We anticipate that container carriers, freight forwarders and container receivers will continue to experience financial uncertainty as container freight rates continue to decline.

The volatility of the market in both shipping and aviation freight is clearly posing a challenge for businesses throughout the international supply chain. This cascades down, causing an increase in the exercise of contractual and possessory ‘liens’ over cargo as companies battle out the finances to make ends meet. Those engaged with the international carriage of goods are encouraged to undertake an enhanced due diligence process of the entities involved prior to contracting.

Poole PR practitioner is youngest person to achieve globally-recognised status

Leila Willingham, business and account manager at LLPR, sets the bar for the next generation of PR professionals, becoming the youngest person ever to achieve globallyrecognised Chartered PR Practitioner status.

Sandbanks-based PR and communications agency, Liz Lean PR (LLPR), is celebrating professional excellence among its team as Leila Willingham becomes the youngest person ever to gain chartership status with the PR industry’s global professional body, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

Leila joined the agency as an account executive in 2017, having completed sixth form studies in Poole. Since then, she has undertaken a series of on and off the job training including the PRCA Foundation Certificate, the CIPR Professional Diploma and most recently gaining chartership status with the CIPR, demonstrating her excellence in the profession.

Lindsay Dunlop, CIPR corporate development associate, said: “Through her role as business and account manager at LLPR, Leila has demonstrated an intrinsic talent within the industry. At the age of 23, she is the youngest CIPR member ever to gain chartership status.

“This achievement is trailblazing for younger PR practitioners, demonstrating that upholding the highest professional standards in PR isn’t exclusive to those with extensive years of experience. As an organisation, we are committed to a future in which Chart. PR status is the minimum expected of a senior PR professional. Leila’s success

promotes the standards of practice and professional conduct that we demand of all PR practitioners and sets the expectation for new professionals joining the industry.”

Leila completed her chartership assessment in October 2022, having just celebrated her fifth anniversary with the company. In that time, Leila has developed her skills as a successful PR practitioner and business leader, having been instrumental in achieving key successes for clients and winning new business for the agency.

Leila said: “Receiving the news that I am the youngest person ever to achieve chartership with the CIPR extends the pride and success I feel having gained accreditation last month. I hope that this achievement demonstrates that age has only ever been a number and that young people should absolutely be encouraged to go after their ambitions and have confidence in the skills and knowledge they can bring to the sector.”

The reality check

Every now and again, life presents you with some cold, hard realities. As a Business leader, Dorset Chamber board director and ex-President of Dorset Chamber, Paul Tansey, shares his reflections.

It was 4pm on a summer Thursday. My five-year-old grandson asked me if I could play with him. “I’m sorry Jason”, I said, “Grandad’s working.” His little shoulders slumped, and he walked away, dejected. “Grandad’s always working,” he said to Granny. My heart sank. He was right.

I had promised myself it wouldn’t be like this when I had grandkids. They are so precious and grow up so fast. It prompted me to consider a re-think.

I am blessed. My life is incredibly full. Aged 56, I have a wonderful wife, three married kids, six grandchildren, three businesses, the MYTIME charity, my work with schools (which I have been struggling to do enough of), the occasional trip to help out in Ukraine and I’m a director of Dorset Chamber. I also love AFC Bournemouth and have a few motorcycles, which I struggle to find time to enjoy…

I love all of these things, but none more than my family. Something had to give. With a heavy heart, I called Ian Girling (Dorset Chamber CEO) and told him of my dilemma. He understood completely. So, after nine years, I recently retired as a director of Dorset Chamber.

Resigning as a director of Dorest Chamber was a really tough decision. Ian and I had been on the same team for nine years – ever since he took over as CEO. I remember telling him right from the outset that if he took this job, he needed to modernise the organisation – back then it wasn’t the warm, modern progressive chamber we have today. To me (and others I spoke with) it seemed stuffy and old-fashioned. It felt like a dark blue club for middle-aged men, in grey suits. He asked me if I’d like to help with that challenge. I couldn’t resist.

I was among his first appointments to the board. The goal was to change the image, culture and indeed the very nature of the chamber.

Today, the chamber is a million miles

away from where it was. We routinely talk about menopause and the mental health challenges of business leaders. The last two presidents have been female, and the board is properly gender-balanced. In my opinion, it is the most progressive group yet. The image of the chamber is bright and positive, reflected by its vibrant colours – a modern mix of blues, pink and white.

The membership is warm and inviting. When I meet people at Dorset Chamber events they speak of the friendly, supportive nature of the group. Rather than a place where 700+ businesses go to sell to each other. I love that. Long-term relationships blossom easily and there is a genuine desire for friendship at its heart.

Of course, Ian Girling led this transition and, on a personal level, it’s been amazing to watch Ian develop and grow into a great local leader and frequently represent Dorset in all the media. After a while, it became almost routine to see him on TV. More importantly, he truly grasped the potential for social media and when the pandemic hit, he was there, all over LinkedIn, Facebook and the media talking to Dorset businesses and updating everybody on the latest news.

It’s been a great adventure and at times, great fun.

I’ll remember my year as chamber president with great fondness. The support I received from Ian, the board and my fellow chamber members was amazing. I feel emotional now, as I did then when I recall what we achieved that year.

Together, we set up Dorset’s largest Careers and Apprenticeships show (CAS) in conjunction with Catherine Beater and the good folk at The Careers and Enterprise Company. It’s a legacy I’m very

Today, the chamber is a million miles away from where it was. We routinely talk about menopause and the mental health challenges of business leaders. The last two presidents have been female, and the board is properly gender-balanced.

proud of as, to this day, CAS continues to bring Dorset businesses and young people together.

Over the next 10 years, my grandchildren will make further demands and while I still intend to be busy – I’m not about to retire – I do need to make space in my life for them because Grandad can’t always be too busy to attend a football match or build a den, or a make a Lego tower, or design a mega hot-wheels track.

I’d like to thank everybody for their support over the last nine years, but especially Ian (and of course Sarah), the board and the Dorset Chamber members, so many of whom I now count as friends. Meanwhile, the Dorset Chamber continues to move forward and break new ground and I wish everybody involved every success.

Rest assured you’re not getting rid of me though, I’ll still be an active community member and promoter. See you at an event soon!

The winning BID

Bournemouth

The huge projector in Boscombe was the initiative that impressed the judges and saw off 19 other BIDs which made it through to the short-list. It was the country’s first permanent 3D projection mapping system on a UK high street and burst into life earlier this year.

Moving images are sent from the top of the Sovereign Centre to the building opposite, a surface area of almost 200 square metres (650 square feet). The facility is used to promote events and also give exposure to local artists and schools. It was supported by the Bournemouth Towns Fund and has become a fixture in the centre of Boscombe.

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are a defined area within which businesses are required to pay an additional levy in order to fund projects. Earlier this year levypayers voted for the Bournemouth Coastal BID to operate for another five years.

The second award the BID has recently picked up was a ‘silver’ award in the Industry Support category at the DMB Tourism Awards 2022 for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Fiona McArthur, BID manager, said: “To pick up the trophy at the British BID Awards was the result of hard work by our team and all our levy-payers. We beat large places including Leicester and Wolverhampton and every BID in the country was able to enter – and there are almost 300 of them.

“We represent the coastal area between Pokesdown and Westbourne and our aim is to improve all these places with a variety of projects. The projector was one such initiative and it really stands out and has become a talking point in Boscombe and attracted many visitors.

“Look out for more displays on the giant screen as we move towards Christmas.

“It was also a real delight to win a silver award in the Industry Support category at the DMB Tourism Awards 2022 for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

“We have been granted another five years to help our levy-payers and the places in which they operate and will do just that.”

It’s Party Time!

The season to be jolly is fast approaching but if you’re the host how do you make sure your event goes with a bang?

It may seem a scary and overwhelming task, but with good planning it needn’t be, and the rewards of a successful event will far outweigh the efforts involved. Here are some of my top tips to consider when planning your next launch, awards ceremony, or corporate gig:

1. AIM FOR THE GOAL

When in the planning stages never lose sight of the main reason for your event, how you want your guests to feel and the impression you need to make.

2. TO THEME OR NOT TO THEME?

Themes can be a useful tool to help pull an event together but be mindful of getting too carried away, especially if developing an annual event. Your theme must have relevance, or it could run the risk of being naff.

3. FOOD & DRINK

This is such an important topic, and the list could go on. The basics are.

• If you serve drink, you MUST have something to soak it up even if that’s just olives and nibbles.

• Don’t play it safe to please the masses so banish Chicken Supreme forever. Even budget chefs are keen to show their culinary prowess so let them get creative.

• Buy the best alcohol your budget will allow and make sure you order plenty, so you don’t run out.

4. ENTERTAINMENT

Like food and drink, entertainment can make or break an event. Whether it’s a DJ, live band or performers keep it fresh, exciting, and as superior as you can afford. Stay clear of pulling in favours from well-meaning friends and always use professionals who are used to working the crowd.

5. RESOURCES

Don’t underestimate the time it takes to organise an event.

So, it might be worth considering using the services of events planners. Not only will they shoulder the stress but have the expertise, creativity, and contacts to elevate your event to the spectacular!

Could you volunteer during Treecycling weekend?

Volunteers and vans are required to join Diverse Abilities’ efforts for a sustainable Christmas as part of its Treecycling fundraising initiative.

The Treecycling weekend takes place from Friday 6 January until Monday 9 January 2023 when the charity will be collecting Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, East Dorset, and Ringwood’s Christmas trees for recycling following the festive period.

Volunteers are required to drive vans and wayfind, as well as dropping off the trees at nominated recycling points across the conurbation and beyond.

Claire Cooper, fundraising officer at Diverse Abilities, said: “Treecycling is a great way to get out in the fresh air and blow away the cobwebs following the Christmas period. It’s one of our most important fundraisers of the year and allows us to raise vital money for the children and adults we support. 2022 was a recordbreaking year for the collection, and we’re hoping to increase the number of trees collected this year.”

Vans, of transit size or larger, are required to help with the collection and businesses, families, or community groups with access to these are encouraged to get in touch and provide support over the weekend.

Claire said: “There’s no need to give up your whole weekend, just providing a day or even a few hours will help to make a huge difference to collecting all the trees booked over the festive period. It’s always a really fun weekend, and we look forward to welcoming more volunteers onboard this year.”

Those interested in being part of the collections can email treecycling@diverseabilities.org. uk or call 01202 711507 to find out more.

Alternatively, visit diverseabilities.org.uk/trees for a full list of locations that trees can be collected from, and to book your tree collection for a suggested £10 donation. www.diverseabilities.org.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS 14 December 2022 | Dorset Business Focus /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber /company/dorset-chamber/

The Poole-based yacht manufacturer exports 98% of its 140 boats made every year across the globe, via 100 appointed dealer offices in over 60 countries. This autumn, Sunseeker announced an impressive record-breaking forward order book of over £600million, equivalent to two years of annual turnover, as well as its largest investment in new product development ever.

Sunseeker’s product development strategy from 2019-2021 was to nearly double the range from 11 to 20 models. This was delivered on time and now, CEO Andrea Frabetti has unveiled business plans for 2022-2025 which will see another 12 new models launched, taking the total number in its portfolio to 22 yachts, from 38 feet to 161 feet.

Albeit the last few years have been challenging for a lot of businesses, Sunseeker continued to invest £35million of CapEx in facilities, people and products, and has now committed another £40million for new product development and production capability across the next three years.

Whilst a record investment for the company, it is also good news for its supply chain, many based in Dorset, who will benefit from both the research and development spend and the expanding product range.

Employing around 2,300 people, Sunseeker continues to be the largest employer in Dorset with a continued recruitment drive resulting in expansion of its sites and investment into production processes. The company’s award-winning apprentice programme offers applicants the opportunity to kickstart a career in the global marine industry, studying to become highly skilled in a range of yacht construction disciplines while completing the relevant Apprenticeship Standard. This year, Sunseeker recruited a record 50 new technical apprentices to join the team at its shipyards across Dorset.

Further afield, Sunseeker recently appointed new dealers to join its expanding network. In the Middle East, Sunseeker Gulf has been appointed to exclusively represent the yacht builder in the region

whilst in the US, Sunseeker’s partnership with OneWater Yacht Group continues to strengthen as it expands its retail footprint across North America, which now accounts for approximately 40% of all production. Whilst people, facilities and distribution are vital, Sunseeker is first and foremost a product and innovation led business. The boats, many of which go on to become award-winning, receive the greatest focus as it is the company’s reputation for design, engineering and quality that consistently ranks it as one of the most desirable brands with immense customer loyalty. Leading the charge in 2022 was its highly anticipated 100 Yacht which will revolutionise Sunseeker’s Yacht range and earmark the start of a new era in flybridge design and functionality. The model offers great versatility with a truly global appeal. This model was present for the first time in September at Cannes Yachting Festival and certainly attracted the crowds, albeit 15 have been sold off-plan, before anyone got to see the first yacht.

Having manufactured in Dorset for over 50 years, Sunseeker International is clearly not new to international trade, but few will truly appreciate its reach and pre-eminence in the ‘luxury’ industry, not just the luxury yacht sector.

Also at the show was the launch of the Ocean 156 and Ocean 182 models, offering something completely novel in the Sunseeker range. Both models reference their gross tonnage figure, the measurement of a yacht’s interior volume, as a new and unexpected naming convention for Sunseeker which captures why the model is so unique and reminds the owner that they are gaining a significant increase in interior volume.

To conclude the autumn boat show season, Sunseeker unveiled the impressive Ocean 460 at Monaco Yachting Festival. The new trideck, semi-displacement superyacht boasts expansive interior and exterior volume with a sleek, sporty and futuristic look. Whilst part of the Ocean range, it is also a superyacht, the first to feature a vertical bow and, with a beam of 31 ft, she has 25% more interior volume than her sister ship, the 131 Yacht, paving the way for a completely new design philosophy for the next generation of Sunseeker superyachts.

Next up to physically launch is the remarkable Superhawk 55, a brand new model set to define the sector with exquisite looks, impressive design and innovation that others will surely seek to emulate.

So, in summary, it has been a busy but successful couple of years for Sunseeker which remains committed to always ‘Seek More’. The New Year will see the brand reveal even more exciting plans and multiple new models during Düsseldorf and Miami Boat Shows. Watch this space. www.sunseeker.com

Rugby club sponsorship extended

Bridge Health & Wellbeing in Christchurch has renewed its sponsorship of Christchurch Rugby Club for a third consecutive year. Situated by the East Christchurch Sports & Social Club on Grange Road, the club re-launched in 2019 and welcomes rugby players of all abilities.

Opening its doors in 2019, Bridge Health & Wellbeing began providing physiotherapy services for club players, including injury support and rehabilitation. When the 2020/2021 season began, Bridge Health & Wellbeing increased its involvement with the club by becoming a key sponsor. As the club entered the 2022/2023 season, the clinic extended its sponsorship into a third year.

Paul O’Connell, physiotherapist and cofounder of Bridge Health & Wellbeing, said: “It has been great to see the rugby club develop over the past three years. Alongside the men, we now regularly see several women’s players coming in for physiotherapy and sports massage. As a family-run clinic, being part of our local community and working with the town’s rugby club is really important. We look forward to supporting them through the 2022/23 season.”

Club chair Don Lynaghan said: “We are really proud of how the club has progressed over the past three years. The men’s team has played some excellent rugby, and the women’s side has formed, grown and flourished. It has been a great side to watch and be around, and I know there are exciting

things to come from them this season.

Partners like Bridge Health & Wellbeing are vital to helping players perform at their best on the pitch, and we are very grateful for their continued support.”

The Purple Pound

Lorraine Stanley, founder and CEO of the not-for-profit organisation SWAD, shares her personal insight and recommendations on ways businesses could adapt the customer experience for disabled people and their families and, in turn, build lasting customer engagement.

Lorraine said: “I have relied on a wheelchair to access the world for almost 20 years. Disability discrimination laws have been in place for 27 years. Despite this, there are many shops, restaurants, and other venues that I can’t enter as there are no ramps or lifts. Sometimes there can be a ramp, but the store furniture is too close together (clothes racks, tables and chairs) or there is no aisle space for wheelchair users to navigate.

“People with walking aids, anyone with a child’s buggy, and people who rely on holding onto someone’s arm due to balance issues (eg, dementia), are just as excluded as myself. The bottom line is that our (the disabled community’s) money is just as valuable as anyone else’s, and businesses are turning away huge amounts of it by not catering for us.

“Even accessing a solicitor can be a challenge, as many of their offices are located above street level, with no lifts and steep stairs. From personal experience, it is upsetting to be reviewing and signing off on divorce paperwork in a coffee shop, with complete strangers in earshot – rather than a private office.

Did you know:

“Not everyone with mobility issues is a wheelchair user. Our population is ageing. The number of people aged 65 or over in England will increase by 65 per cent in the next 25 years. Even if the age of 65+ seems far into the future for you, the reality is that mobility levels often decrease as we age. Perhaps it’s time for a bit of ‘enlightened self-interest’ – a little bit of future-proofing?

“The hospitality and tourism industries need us disabled people to visit. Where we go, there will be friends and family with us. If we find a venue that meets our access needs, we’re very loyal.

“News of a decent accessible venue also spreads rapidly through disability networks. People will book family, and business, events when they find an inclusive venue. Being accessible can give any business the competitive edge in the marketplace throughout the current cost of living crisis, and beyond. A prime example of this is a local business – the award-winning Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth. They have a sensory room, a Changing Places toilet, and some bedrooms with hoisting systems in-situ.

“Conversely, I was invited to present at a medical conference earlier this year. It

was an absolutely beautiful hotel that said it had disabled access. The conference room was above ground level, but the dimensions of the only lift were too small for my wheelchair. I had to present by video link, which meant I missed out on the networking that is vital for my business.

“That hotel lost my personal business on that occasion. I spoke with the conference organisers about the access issues, and they have decided to remove that venue from their files. So, that hotel will not be benefitting from a significant amount of money over the next few years – all for the sake of an outdated, inaccessible, lift. That’s thousands of pounds worth of income going elsewhere!

“A final thought ….everybody can use a ramp – not everybody can use steps.”

Epic challenge for Julia’s House

A team of intrepid trekkers have returned from the adventure of a lifetime in Peru, having raised a fantastic £60,000 for Julia’s House children’s hospice.

Twenty adventurers joined the Julia’s House five-day trek across the Machu Picchu-Abra Salkantay area of Peru. The

team included members of families supported by the charity and Julia’s House director of care, Claire Hudson-Cooper. The journey there, organised in conjunction with The Different Travel Company, involved two days of travelling and three flights in order to reach Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire,

where the team spent their first couple of days acclimatising to the altitude.

“It didn’t take long for people to start feeling the effects of altitude sickness which, although expected, can be hard to cope with,” said Julia’s House events assistant, Isobel Langrish, who headed up the team.

“While everyone had prepared, I think we were all a bit shocked at how much the altitude affected our fitness. We had to stop every 20 steps to catch our breath and, because our appetite was suppressed, it was hard to keep our energy levels up with food without feeling nauseous.

“Despite the challenges, we all carried on and started the five-day trek. For the first few nights, we camped under the stars in between our day treks which was wonderful, and we made it to our highest point, 4,600m above sea level, which is the same height as the top of Mont Blanc. We were so thrilled at such an achievement.”

The team wasn’t daunted, and persevered to make it to Aguas Calientes at the bottom of the Inca site at Machu Picchu, where they were rewarded with the unique sight they had all come to see – the ruins of the citadel built by the Incas in around 1450.

Reserved Matters approved for 500 homes

Chapman Lily Planning Ltd is proud to be working with Lovell Homes, Abri Group, Gonville & Caius College Cambridge and Neejam 165 on a scheme for 500 new homes at Littlemoor on the edge of Weymouth.

The scheme forms part of a wider mixed-use Littlemoor Urban Extension identified in the West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland Local Plan. The new homes will be delivered by Lovell Homes in four phases, with woodland buffers planted at the outset, allowing trees to mature during the eight-year build programme. Much needed affordable homes will be frontloaded in phases 1 and 2 and managed by Abri – a strategic partner to Homes England.

Brett Spiller, director of Chapman Lily Planning, said: “We are delighted that Dorset Council’s Planning Committee unanimously resolved to approve the Reserved Matters application (access, layout, scale, appearance and landscaping) for 500 dwellings and associated works. The Reserved Matters followed the grant of outline consent and the approval of a Design Code, as well as constructive pre-application discussions.

Refinements were made during the course of the application in response to consultee comments, further improving the scheme. We were impressed by the council’s ability to balance competing objectives and pleased to hear members commend the high-quality design. This was very much a team approach and we are grateful for the dedication and support of a talented project team.”

The advent of a self-care Christmas

By focussing on self-care, our health and wellbeing coordinator has a plan for us to get through the Christmas season and not suffer the January blues.

In these chastened times, for some, Christmas may offer relief from their worries. The joy of gathering family together and connecting with friends and neighbours is the essence of the Christmas spirit. However, over the past decade, it has increasingly come with rampant consumerism and excess leading to a whopping financial and physical hangover in January.

Retailers are acutely aware of how over-stretched our budgets will be this year and will be going all out to try to persuade us to part with our money. It’s easy to get caught up in this, but the truth is, we really don’t need those sherry laced vol-auvents, the latest must have gadget or that third glass of mulled wine.

How about trying a different approach this year? It takes some focus and determination to not get sucked up into over-eating and excess drinking, but it doesn’t mean you have to be the office Scrooge by not having fun and letting your hair down. It’s a case of carefully choosing your moments to have fun, but staying

on track for the rest of the time.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to hit 1 January and not feel like you have overindulged with all the feelings of regret that brings? Imagine starting 2023 feeling energised and ready to face the New Year with renewed vigour?

For the best chance of success, devise a routine. A novel way to do this is to ditch the chocolate advent calendar and instead have a health advent calendar. Behind each door, have a task that contributes to nourishing your mind and body. For example, schedule a meditation session, have a cooking-healthyfood-from-scratch day, a brisk 10k walk, an early night, sprinkle in days with no alcohol and, on some days, just say no to a party invitation.

By approaching Christmas mindfully and devoting every day in the run up to 25 December to your mental and physical health, it will pay huge dividends and you will go into 2023 with a definite spring in your step.

Employers – avoid the Christmas party headache

This year may be the first company-wide social event some have attended post lockdown.

Social events can play an important part in rewarding employees and building strong teams and are useful for promoting cross-team working and improving communication.

Employers have a duty of care for their staff during work events, whether they fall outside of usual working hours or not.

Here are some helpful tips to avoid this party season being more of a headache than it should be:

• Ensure your policies are up to date and set expectations around behaviour

• Set a fixed finish time so that employees can arrange lifts/taxis in advance

• Select entertainment carefully to ensure it won’t cause offence

• Provide food and ensure that soft drinks are freely available throughout the event

• Underage employees should not be permitted to purchase alcohol

• Check for any allergies or dietary requirements beforehand to ensure that the event is inclusive

• Don’t forget to invite all your employees including those working remotely

• Don’t make attendance compulsory

• Hold regular training sessions in Equality and Diversity and Anti-Harassment and Bullying

• Avoid an unlimited free bar, consider a voucher system for alcoholic drinks

• Avoid drunken promises, they may be held to be binding!

Empowering women in leadership

Leadership and management training specialists, Exalt Training, has launched a pioneering programme to support women in the workplace.

The Women in Leadership programme is designed to equip and empower women to realise their full potential. The short courses are designed for individuals already in leadership and management roles, or those who aspire to be leaders and managers in the future, and cover topics ranging from leadership and communication to managing stereotyping, growth mindset and ‘imposter syndrome’.

On completion, learners will receive an ILM accredited Leadership and Management qualification. There are three routes available: Level 3 (for entry-level managers), Level 5 (for experienced managers) and Level 7 (directors and leaders).

Lisa Pearman, CEO at Exalt Training, said: “The last ten years has seen huge change in the workplace. Businesses have worked hard to create gender positive working environments. But there can still be disparity and inequality alongside selfdoubt and burnout. These courses aim to equip women in the workplace with the tools needed to maximise their potential and to support the teams they lead and manage.”

Recruitment consultancy supports employees in response to spiraling energy costs

Better known for devising and applying innovative candidate attraction strategies, Rubicon People Partnerships’ brainstorming team turned their sights towards the upcoming spiraling heating costs as winter looms.

The brief itself was to supplement other, more traditional energy saving initiatives already in place (including better utilisation of natural rather than artificial lights, energy efficient light bulbs, the regular upgrading of electrical devices, laptops replacing desktop pcs, hibernation features being enabled, energy efficient devices and zoned thermostats) with something unusual and ‘comment worthy.’

One of Rubicon’s Engineering Division recruitment consultants, Scott Rutter, said: “As we brainstormed, someone mentioned that, if there was a way to ensure that everyone in the office wore a thermal layer, we’d be able to reduce the heating in our offices. We have branded shirts that we use in the summer, so we agreed to present the possibility of sourcing a thermal/quilted jacket that could be used inside the offices as well as when out on visits or travelling to and from work.”

Rubicon’s Office Division senior recruitment coordinator, Amber Marshall, said: “As a business, we needed to do our bit to help our colleagues and reduce our energy usage. We now have a stylish jacket that brings our various teams even closer together. Our marketing team sourced the jackets and applied embroidered logos to complete the look.”

Abigail Reeves, Rubicon’s marketing manager, said: “Not only will the jackets ensure we stay warm (the feedback has been extremely positive), they’re also a great addition to our branded marketing collateral with the team wearing the jackets for their daily commute and to client visits as well as internally when they feel the chill.”

with Tower Supplies

At time of going to press, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) released their annual update of health and safety statistics on work-related injury, ill health, enforcement, and costs in Great Britain. The HSE stats will highlight some key figures. Sadly, in my experience this will mean…

• Millions of working people suffering from a work-related illness

• Hundreds of thousands of working people sustaining an injury at work according to the Labour Force Survey

• Tens of millions working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury

• Tens of billions of pounds in cost of injuries and ill health from current working conditions (2018/19)

We know that protecting the worker with personal protective equipment (PPE) is the least effective element of the Hierarchy of Controls. PPE is vital in many situations, but it should only be the last line of defence.

To fulfil the Tower mission to ‘Make The Workplace A Better Place’, we work in partnership with customers to change the way people work, such as administrative controls, which are a much more important and effective stage of the hierarchy.

When you work with Tower, PPE can also mean ‘Premium Partnership Experience’. Beyond the supply of PPE, Tower ensures that the wearer also knows how to use, care, and maintain their PPE. We’re able to support our customers to ensure the right combinations of PPE are used, and we have a system to help monitor this.

Ineffective PPE might look the part, but it wouldn’t work as the last line of defence, potentially resulting in irreversible harm. Remember, just because it fits, doesn’t mean the wearer is protected. Contact me to find out more.

Church House backs unique cross-Atlantic voyage

The first set of four brothers to row any ocean, and the first sets of two twins to row any ocean, they will be travelling a gruelling 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the West Indies. The rowers can expect to experience a wide variety of challenges from waves up to 20ft high, temperatures up to 40°C, sleep deprivation, severe dehydration, and the small matter of shark-infested waters.

Known as the world’s toughest row, the Devon-based team are in it for more than just the challenge. They are raising money for three charities, each personal to skipper Jack and his brothers, Hamish, Arthur and Euan. The charities include Friends of Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda which provides vital healthcare services to poor and vulnerable people in the Greater Luwero Triangle area; Drive Forward, which helps young adults leaving foster or residential

care to achieve their full potential; and Chat, which supports people experiencing housing difficulties in mid-Devon.

Church House has set up a dedicated page on its website to share details of the challenge and hopes to feature updates from the rowers as they make their way across the vast Atlantic ocean.

Jeremy Wharton, CEO of Church House, said: “When I first heard of this challenge, I was in complete awe of the courage and commitment required to take it on. Leading a business with roots in the South West, I immediately wanted to be involved. The fact that a group of four brothers will take on this long-distance row makes it even more exciting.”

PRF Composite Materials announced as material supplier to ThrustWSH

PRF Composite Materials is delighted to be announced as prepreg supplier to ThrustWSH.

Led by Richard Noble OBE and Lorne Campbell, ThrustWSH aims to set a new water speed record, using pioneering research and a truly innovative design to create a safe and fast hydroplane with a target to set an officially ratified two way average speed of 400+mph over a measured mile or kilometre.

PRF will be supplying its innovative prepreg materials for the fully instrumented data collection model test programme part of the project; supporting Supernatural-x in construction of a concept model, which will be used to promote the project directly to educational and composites industry settings, and then the ¼ scale 240mph operational model.

The model programme is essential for building the research and testing to ensure the safety and performance of the full-scale hydroplane. The build of the ¼ scale model will commence once the research reaches a point where the boat design team is happy to proceed with the design or to evolve this further; this is currently projected to be early in 2023 at this point in the project.

Hannah Khusainova, marketing director at PRF, said: “It is an honour to be selected as material supplier and to be particularly noted for our long-standing history of innovation and technical expertise. Over our 40 years, we have led material development in composites, and we are looking forward to being part of a STEM educational project.” www.prfcomposites.com

The advantages of Inheritance Tax planning

As Dorset financial expert Peter Harding explains,

The importance of planning often begins with Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning. While few estates actually pay IHT, the 40% tax charged on assets above the nil-rate band and the Residence Nil Rate Band makes it a risk not worth taking.

When you’re trying to come up with a plan for passing on wealth, traditionally it’s about trusts, property and so on but people are increasingly using their pension pots. A pension has long been one of the most taxefficient ways to pass on wealth.

For example, if you die before you turn 75 and you haven’t accessed your pension, your beneficiaries can receive all of it tax free, provided they claim it within two years of your death. It’s important to get to grips with the pension rules and ensure you’re using them to your advantage.

You could also consider gifting. This is money you can give away while still alive to reduce the IHT bill, so it should be part of your tax planning. For example, you can give away a total of £3,000 worth of gifts each tax year without them being added to the value of your estate (and you can use the previous year’s allowance, too, if you haven’t already).

Retirement continues to change, with implications for how inheritance planning works. Advice is especially crucial here to balance your own needs and those of your loved ones.

Summit kickstarts skills plan

A rallying cry has been sounded for businesses and training providers to join in a new initiative to close the skills gap in Dorset. It was issued at the launch of the county’s Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) to pinpoint shortages holding firms and the local economy back.

More than 60 delegates – including business leaders, college principals and council officers – attended the launch of the three-year initiative.

The Department for Education funded programme – led by Dorset Chamber – will review the county’s skills and training provision to ensure it aligns with the needs of business.

Thousands of Dorset firms will be invited to take part in online and face-to-face research to understand the skills they need and shape recommendations on how the government could improve the way these skills are delivered and accessed.

Dorset Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said: “The Dorset LSIP will shine a light on how the skills need is changing in Dorset, what skills are needed and the changes required to the way skills are delivered so that businesses have workforces to meet current and future demands.

“It is a challenge with the way the world is changing so quickly in terms of technology, and the way business is changing but it is vital that education, skills and business are completely aligned with each other.”

A multi-sector panel of experts gave their perspectives at the event at Merley House, near Wimborne, before an open discussion about working together to

change the skills landscape for Dorset.

They included May Palmer, managing director of Wimborne based construction firm Harry J Palmer; Jamie Sergeant, chief executive of Bournemouth based agency Crowd; Howard Gunstock, of Carbon Kapture seaweed farms; and Raina Summerson, chief executive of Portland based care business Agincare.

The first phase of the Dorset LSIP is designed to scope and understand the areas and job roles in which Dorset employers want and need better skills.

Its initial findings will be shared with contributors in February before its review report is submitted to the Department for Education in May.

Its recommendations will shape the type and method of delivery of skills, including the format and curriculum.

Nicola Newman, LSIP co-ordinator, said: “What is different about the Dorset LSIP is that it will pinpoint and make recommendations about the specific skills needed by Dorset businesses.

What is the Dorset LSIP?

The Dorset LSIP is a Dorset-wide review of skills provision against the future and current needs of business. Specifically, it aims to:

• Set out the key priorities and changes needed in Dorset to make post-16 technical education or training more responsive and closely aligned to Dorset labour market needs

• Provide an agreed set of actionable priorities that employers, providers and stakeholders in Dorset can get behind to drive change

• Identify unmet and future skills needs and enable meaningful engagement between employers and providers

• Identify skills, capabilities and expertise required in relation to jobs that directly contribute to or indirectly support Net Zero targets, adaptation to climate change and other environmental goals

• Produce a report outlining recommendations informing the future delivery of skills provision in Dorset

The focus

The research invites participation from all employers and sectors in Dorset, with specific focus on:

• Agriculture, agritech and aquaculture

• Advanced manufacturing and engineering including aerospace, defence and marine

• Construction

• Digital tech and creative

• Healthcare

• Net Zero skills

• Digital skills

Get involved

Understanding your needs, your frustrations and your views is central to the success of this initiative and the Dorset skills agenda. Your experience on the ground, running and leading an organisation will create the Dorset LSIP Partnership, providing the insights it needs to be relevant and impactful. Poole Sea Cadets held their AGM and prize giving recently and were able to reflect upon another successful year.

The prizes were presented by the unit’s patron, the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Tony Trent accompanied by the Sheriff of Poole, Councillor Mike Brooke. President, Rear Admiral Nick Lambert, RN (Retd), was also on hand to help guide proceedings.

The evening was held with the large audience sitting under lighting which didn’t have to tap into the national grid at all, which reflected a big achievement story of the year. The cadet unit successfully implemented a solar panel scheme which the cadets named ‘Project Liquid Sun.’ This was achieved through a successful grant bid to Low Carbon Dorset and, as a result, solar panels were installed which provide clean energy and feed battery storage. The panels are now generating enough energy to enable the unit to sell electricity back to the grid.

Poole Sea Cadets is the first Sea Cadet unit in the country – out of more than 400 – to implement such a strategy and it is likely that many others will now follow Poole’s example.

The substantial sum of money saved can now be spent on the cadet experience.

At the awards, achievements of all sorts including musical, sporting, seamanship and helping support the community were all highlighted. During the year, the 60 cadets who form the unit achieved 492 qualifications which is an endorsement not only of the cadets, but also the valued band of volunteer instructors.

legal FOCUS ON

Smart meters are a smart decision for your business this winter

Firms of all sizes are currently being confronted by a host of challenges, from soaring energy bills, labour shortages, spiralling inflation, and climbing interest rates.

As a business owner, you need to ensure that your doors stay open and that your business can thrive, no matter what the season brings.

Did you know that a smart meter could help your business this winter and beyond?

Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters currently being rolled out in homes and small businesses across Great Britain by energy suppliers.

If you are looking for practical advice to help tackle these challenges, a smart meter could be a positive step for your business.

Make informed choices about your firm’s energy usage

A smart meter could give you valuable insights into how your business uses energy, day and night, helping you to identify ways to reduce your energy use.

Close the door on estimated bills

Installing a smart meter is a positive step in taking control of business outgoings. Once installed, smart meters digitally measure how much energy you’re using and

send your meter reading directly to your energy supplier at agreed intervals, putting an end to estimated bills.

Don’t let energy costs keep you awake at night

Installing a smart meter can help you closely monitor where you spend your money, helping with planning and projection of costs in the short, medium, and long term. They allow you to spend less time worrying about cash flow and more time running your business.

Find out if you are eligible for a smart meter Whether you rent or own your business premises, you could still be eligible. If you don’t have your own gas and/or electricity meter, ask your landlord if they plan to get one for your building.

Half of eligible businesses across Great Britain already have a smart or advanced meter installed.

Firms with 10 employees or less could be eligible for a smart meter.

To find out more please visit www. smartenergygb.org/about-smart-meters/geta-smart-meter.

You can also contact your energy supplier or broker.

The members of a company can remove a director before the expiration of their period of office, even if they have an agreement with the company, under Section 168 of the Companies Act 2006. If shareholders feel that a director is failing to act in accordance with their duties they can take steps to remove the director.

The strict process for removing a director is as follows:

1. Serving special notice on the company, at least 28 days in advance

2. On receipt of the notice, a general meeting must be called by directors

3. The director is given the right to make written representations in response to the proposed removal

4. At the meeting, the director is also entitled to make representations in person and once these have been heard, the members in attendance (and who are entitled to vote) must vote on the resolution

5. The resolution will be passed if a simple majority (over 50%) of shareholders vote in favour.

Significant legal consequences can arise for a company if a director who is also an employee is removed under Section 168 without careful consideration being given to such matters. There can also be consequences where a director has been removed who is also shareholder. If you are considering removing a director under Section 168, we recommend seeking legal advice to mitigate the risk of such claims.

Once the director is removed under Section 168, the company’s statutory books need to be updated and Companies House must be notified within 14 days.

Zoe Watson, the author of this article, is an experienced Corporate & Commercial solicitor and the latest addition to our growing and well-resourced team, alongside Paul Longland. Zoe and Paul would be happy to provide tailored advice on removing a director legally, without giving rise to claims.

Audi e-tron GT at Poole Audi

This month I had the pleasure in test driving Poole Audi’s ultimate electric sportscar. With quattro all-wheel drive, a power output of 530PS and a thumping 640Nm of torque on overboost, the e-tron GT hits 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds.

The 646PS RS e-tron GT does it in 3.3 seconds with pin-back-into-yourseat hilarity. This is a car that puts a smile on your face, and it does it with no emissions and a 100% electric, nextgeneration powertrain. The RS e-tron GT can travel up to 283 miles on a single charge while the e-tron GT quattro can go even further at up to 298 miles.

Technology highlights include a virtual cockpit and MMI touchscreen display, a 360° camera, remote parking pilot, Matrix LED headlights and a suite of driving aids including Night Vision Assistant and a head-up display.

The e-tron GT is a sensual, sculpted masterpiece. You’ll find sophistication in every detail, from the

20” alloy wheels and LED headlights to the sports seats and luxury cabin. Top-spec Vorsprung models even have adjustable Air Suspension.

With 530PS and 640Nm of torque, the e-tron GT is a rocket ship. It handles brilliantly with adaptive suspension and a low centre of gravity.

It has five doors and two boots (the front boot has an 81-litre load volume while the rear boot has 405-litres) the e-tron GT is an exceptionally capable daily driver.

With support for 270kW charging at 800V charging stations, the e-tron GT charges from 5-80% in 22.5 minutes. A 100kW DC charger will give you an 80% charge in 40 minutes and an 11kW AC charger will give you a 100% charge in 9 hours.

GT and Vorsprung trim levels are available for the e-tron GT while the e-tron RS is available in RS, RS Carbon Black and RS Carbon Vorsprung trim levels.

BCC Business Manifesto for new Prime Minister

Businesses are the very bedrock of the economy, but currently face a host of challenges which threaten the survival of many; eye watering energy bills, labour shortages, 40-year high inflation, and rising interest rates. The Bank of England is now also forecasting a two-year recession.

The BCC’s latest Quarterly Economic Survey highlighted an alarming drop in business confidence and conditions, with key economic indicators falling back to Covid-crisis levels. One in three firms reported a decrease in cashflow, while 25% reported a decrease in domestic sales.

In the wake of the October fiscal statement, the BCC conducted a snap poll of almost 500 firms, to assess the extent to which the chancellor’s plans would impact their investment intentions.

Overall, only 6% of businesses said they would increase their investment, while 37% said they would decrease it as a result of the fiscal statement.

The BCC’s Business Manifesto sets out 17 key policies designed to tackle the challenges facing businesses across the economy, the labour market, international trade and Net Zero.

Top of the list for urgent action are: Investment in infrastructure Government must prioritise long-term growth by financing public projects, with a particular emphasis on green and digital infrastructure. As a result of the Multiplier Effect, investing in public infrastructure, such as the HS2 rail link, will have a high value impact on growth; stimulating local economies and creating jobs across the UK.

Energy support for businesses

Rising energy costs is the number one concern cited by businesses. Government must provide certainty on how the energy support package will work from April so that businesses can plan for the future.

Tackling the tight labour market

There are currently 1.2million unfilled jobs in the UK labour market, meaning businesses must turn new work away. Government must promote the creation of a skilled workforce by offering tax breaks to businesses that invest in training and upskilling. The UK also needs an immigration system that caters to the needs of the labour market. A reform of the Shortage Occupation List is urgently required to help businesses fill job vacancies when they cannot recruit locally.

Promoting export-led growth

More than a quarter (28%) of SME exporters reported decreased sales in Q3 of this year. International trade presents significant opportunities for UK businesses to expand and grow. However, barriers to trade must be removed in order to allow firms to realise their full trading potential. The UK government must work with the European Commission to reach a negotiated solution on business compliance burdens with the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland.

Presenting the BCC Business Manifesto, Shevaun Haviland, director general of the BCC, said: “With a new government and prime minister at the head of the table, it is high time we saw a long-term growth plan that involves investment in people and skills; supports businesses to adapt and thrive; and builds good relationships with our global allies to get British businesses selling again.

“People run businesses and businesses rely on people. This business manifesto offers solutions, including cost-free options, to get our economy moving in the right direction again.”

Store & Secure gives storage support to hospice

Storage company Store & Secure has shown its support for its local charity hospice by offering free storage to Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

Store & Secure is run by sisters Sophie and Lucy Maidman and is located in Poole. The bright yellow building in Hamworthy is 40,000 square feet in area and is touchingly named Joyce House, after their late mother Joyce Maidman, who sadly passed away in 2020.

Sophie Maidman said: “We are delighted to be able to make this gesture to Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. We are aware of the incredible work that they do and the difference that this makes to the patients and their families that it supports across Poole, East Dorset and Purbeck.

“After our mother died, we were contacted by Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s Family Support and Bereavement team to see if they could help us, this was hugely appreciated by us all.”

Lewis-Manning’s chief executive, Clare Gallie, said: “The storage being offered to us by Store & Secure will save our charity approximately £5,000 each year. We will use the space to store retail shop items, hospice equipment that is needed, but not every day, and also items that we need to legally save.

“It’s a wonderfully generous gesture by Store & Secure and we are hugely grateful.”

On the Airfield Industrial Estate, the unit is let to Focal Point Fires on a 10-year lease to February 2029.

Ben Duly, a senior surveyor working out of Vail Williams’ Bournemouth office, said: “We were instructed by the owners to market the investment of 10 Airfield and following the marketing period the sale was agreed.

“Focal Point Fires is the tenant – the company is the UK’s largest manufacturer of fuel effect fires, with both electric

and gas fuel effect fires featured in an extensive product range.”

Poole-based Saline is growing the future

Poole-based business development team Saline has helped food tech company Farm Urban reach new markets.

Farm Urban is an independent company that connects agricultural research and technology with local food production to create innovative and sustainable ways to grow food in the heart of the city, and to make it easy for people to make healthier, more sustainable food choices. Widely known for their vertical farm in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle, it works with communities, schools and corporates, partnering with public and private sector organisations through its ESG programmes to bring about systemic change.

Earlier this year, Farm Urban teamed up with Poole-based business development experts Saline to help grow its business. Managing director Paul Myers talks about the company’s origins, and how it has started to evolve since working with Saline.

“When we were starting out eight years ago, we did a lot of R&D and testing to see

what worked and what didn’t. We installed small-scale systems for our vertical farms, and developed education programmes, which have grown slowly and organically. However, last year we realised that we now needed to make some changes and develop our own revenue streams: we couldn’t scale up or have the impact we wanted while we were still heavily dependent on grant funding.

“We decided to set up a commercial arm of the business, and we were introduced to Saline through a mutual business connection. We initially engaged them to help us grow corporate sales and awareness of our vertical growing walls, but it soon became clear that there was a lot more they could help us with.

“Many are looking for fresh ways to demonstrate their commitment to ESG principles”

“With help and guidance from Saline, we’ve been developing three new ESG packages for corporate clients such as large property owners, tier one contractors, and those

involved in major infrastructure or building projects. Many of them are looking for fresh ways to demonstrate their commitment to ESG principles, connect to local communities, and broaden their CSR activities. The Farm Urban packages – entitled Nourish, Nurture and Flourish – give them the means to do this.

“Saline has been a foundational part of helping us to develop these packages, and the strategies for getting them to market. They’ve helped us to get clear on what will resonate best in which sectors, and used their networks to reach out to corporate contacts to test their reception, feeding back valuable insights so we can refine our offering. Most importantly, they’ve helped us to see a market that we couldn’t see before. And with their input and market knowledge, we’ve found the right price point for the packages we’re producing.”

Tim Smith, Saline’s managing director, said: “Building a business partnership with Farm Urban has been a real highlight of 2022. Strategy programmes are a key part of our offering: helping innovative businesses to understand where their future growth opportunities are, and supporting their growth brings together all of our experience, knowledge and skillsets – and is normally a lot of fun in the process.”
