DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME
Hello and welcome to the February edition of Dorset Business Focus. As always, you’ll find this month’s magazine packed full of interesting content and stories from the Dorset business community and we hope you enjoy this month’s magazine. With Spring around the corner and the rollout of the vaccination programme, my hope is we can now look forward to the future with renewed optimism. Whilst it’s been an incredibly difficult 10 months, there was certainly a great deal of positivity in our last Simply Networking event with around 100 people in the meeting, with everybody ready to get on with their lives and business. When this happens remains the big question and it’s vital we continue to do all we can to help bring the infection rate down. Much of our work over the last 10 months has been around lobbying for support for businesses, particularly those that have been most impacted by the pandemic. The hospitality, leisure, close contact services, events and retail sectors have all suffered hugely over the last 10 months. Through our membership of the British Chambers of Commerce, we continue to lobby for greater support for businesses in these sectors. The British Chambers of Commerce has repeatedly been making the point that the financial measures in place do not come any where near meeting the fixed costs many businesses still incur when closed.
We will continue to lobby for support for these businesses most affected. It’s now been a month since the end of the transition period, and we’ve been busy working with our exporters to ensure they continue to successfully move their goods across borders. With all businesses trading with the EU now needing to produce Customs Declarations for both imports and exports, our International Trade team here at Dorset Chamber are fully geared up to advise businesses on all aspects of international trade. Part funded by the Dorset LEP, I am delighted to also announce a new service offering Dorset businesses advice and support around EU transition. If you have any questions in this regard, don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll do our best to help you. As always, we are on hand to help and support Dorset businesses in any way, so don’t hesitate to get in touch. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Profits soar for independent retailers thanks to OnBuy’s unique approach to sales Dorset-based eCommerce site is the first and only marketplace in the world to automatically discount seller fees during key sale periods, offering buyers savings at no additional cost to retailers OnBuy.com, the world’s fastest-growing marketplace, is set to continue its pledge to support independent retailers throughout 2021 by cutting fees by 50% during key sale surges, an initiative unique to the marketplace. Price drops, slashing prices on millions of products across the site, were achieved in 2020 by OnBuy’s unique offering to reduce its fees for sellers during the major sales periods - Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. This initiative allowed buyers to enjoy discounted prices on every single product without the sellers’ profit margins being impacted – a disruptive move not seen in other online marketplaces. OnBuy’s price drops on products during key retailing dates contributed towards 2020 becoming a landmark year for the company,

resulting in huge successes for sellers trading through the platform. These key sale periods supported OnBuy to achieve 500 per cent year on year growth from December 2019 to December 2020, record a sales increase from a run rate of £24 million to more than £170 million in one year (from 2019 to 2020) and report sales totalling just under £2.5 million on Black Friday alone. As OnBuy doesn’t compete with its sellers through selling its own stock, this success has been shared with the retailers selling through the platform, with many reporting significant growth during the key retailing periods and beyond. One seller feeling the results of OnBuy’s efforts to support them has been Paperback Shop. Georgina Pursch, business development manager at Paperback Shop, commented: “We saw an amazing 500 per cent lift in sales on OnBuy during Black Friday. This is thanks to the fee discount given to help us drive down our prices and the additional marketing campaigns they provided to drive customers to the site.
/company/dorset-chamber/
“OnBuy’s support during Black Friday was unmatched by any other marketplace platform we work with and we greatly appreciate its refreshingly seller-focused attitude.” Cas Paton, founder and CEO of OnBuy, said: “Our rapidly growing business is going from strength to strength, and we firmly believe in using that success to simultaneously increase growth for our sellers. During such a challenging time for retailers, we’re determined to continue with our promise to support our sellers throughout 2021. “We’re much more than a marketplace – we provide an opportunity for retailers of all sizes to succeed. OnBuy’s mission is to be a fair, transparent and ethical marketplace, so we’re dedicated to helping sellers maximise their profits with the huge opportunities presented by key sales periods. We’ve been choosing to discount our sales fees during key retail periods to show our sellers just how committed we are to driving their success. “Unlike other platforms, where sellers are pushed to lower their prices, we cover the costs instead. Independent retailers need all the profit they can get, especially during a pandemic. OnBuy is challenging the status quo, which is why we put our hands in our own pockets to help our sellers benefit hugely from these key sales surges.” OnBuy is set to embark on a definitive growth plan for 2021 to support its mission to achieve unicorn status from its Dorset head office within the next two years. 2021 plans include launching the marketplace into more than 42 countries, which are part of globalisation plans to expand into over 140 countries by year-end 2023. To accommodate its worldwide expansion, the eCommerce business has plans to increase its Dorset-based team over the coming years.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS
Tips and Tricks for entrepreneurs from OnBuy founder and CEO, Cas Paton: New Year, new suppliers? The New Year is the typical moment in which goals are set, ambitions noted, and resolutions decided for the year ahead. Whatever your views are on this tradition, a moment of reset and reflection is useful for all entrepreneurs. One month into 2021, I hope that you’re starting to see progress in achieving these goals, you’re focussed on your ambitions and you’ve stuck to your resolutions. Perhaps your aim is to increase the profitability of business by 20% this year, double your workforce, add a new product to your portfolio, or raise capital? Whatever your ambition, I want to put a question to you: do you have the right people and team around you to enable success? While we all like to believe that we can accomplish big things by ourselves, that our go-getting attitude will conquer all challenges and lead to success, that simply isn’t always the case. The right advice and guidance from the best people is critical in allowing entrepreneurs to flourish. That’s why surrounding yourself with the right suppliers is so important. An example of one supplier that has been instrumental to OnBuy.com’s success is our accountancy firm, Bournemouth-based Bulpitt Crocker and specifically our accountant, Mike Crocker. I have worked closely with Mike for 15 years and know that without his advice, I wouldn’t have achieved the level of success I have to date. I first met with Mike in April 2006. I was in my early twenties and I told him I had big plans. I claimed that I was going to be his biggest client one day and shared my vision on how I would create something amazing. “It’ll take some time, but I’ll get there”, I said. Mike, I’m sure, looked at me like a kid with wild dreams. Yet, he trusted me and wanted to support my ambition. Mike guided me all the way through the development of OnBuy; he kept me on track through research and development, offered guidance on business structures and has advised on personal financial matters, too. I owe huge thanks, and a debt of gratitude, to Mike. Founders and entrepreneurs like me need a network of people who are invested in your vision from the start, so you can concentrate on driving your business forward. The mistake many entrepreneurs
more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
make is to think that they know best about everything to do with their business – that’s just not the case. Always invest in the most skilled people you can; they’ll bring skills and experience you don’t have, plus you can be confident that their specialist area is covered, allowing you to focus on the end goal. When choosing a supplier, here are my three top tips: 1. Do your research and get recommendations by word of mouth 2. Choose a supplier based on their reputation among those you trust. Firms that have a credible history and have come by recommendation are always a good place to start. Networks such as the Dorset Chamber are great for finding recommended suppliers, too. 3. Chose a supplier that believes in your vision and shares similar values to you 4. Synergy between you and your suppliers is key to a valuable working relationship. Mike’s belief in my vision, however wild it seemed at the time, was critical to our success. 5. Don’t just go with the cheapest option
Price comparison is an important part of the supplier selection process, but be sure to compare suppliers in their entirety, not just based on cost. If the more expensive option has experience in your sector and has more innovative ideas to help propel your business, they’ll be more than worth the extra cost. Set aside some time this month to review your suppliers and check they still fit with your business needs. If they’re not contributing to your success, then they’re holding you back. Don’t let 2021 be the year that you fail because your team doesn’t hit the mark!

What’s next for International Trade in 2021 Safety and Security (S&S) declarations will be required on exports when they are empty pallets, containers or vehicles being moved to the EU under a transport contract, or if they are goods being moved in RoRo vehicles where there is a requirement for an Exit Summary (EXS) declaration. From July 2021: Traders moving any goods will have to make full customs declarations at the point of importation and pay relevant tariffs, delaying declarations will not be possible. Full S&S declarations will be required, while for commodities subject to sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) controls, these must arrive at an established point of entry with an appropriate BCP and there will be an increase in physical checks and the taking of samples. SPS checks for animals, plants and their products will take place at GB BCPs. The GVMS will be in place for all imports, exports and transit movements at border locations which have chosen to introduce it. The Government signing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the EU was an important moment following the UK’s exit from the EU. It is the first free trade agreement the EU has ever reached based on zero tariffs and zero quotas. Businesses will be able to continue to trade smoothly, selling to their customers in the EU. From 1 January 2021, the transition period with the European Union (EU) ended, and the United Kingdom (UK) now operates a full, external border as a sovereign nation. This means that controls will be placed on the movement of goods between Great Britain (GB) (England, Scotland and Wales) and the EU. The UK Government will implement full border controls on imports coming into GB from the EU. Recognising the impact of coronavirus on businesses’ ability to prepare, the UK Government has taken the decision to introduce the new border controls in three stages up until 1 July 2021; a flexible and pragmatic approach that will give industry extra time to make the necessary arrangements. The stages are: From January 2021: Traders importing noncontrolled goods, covering everything from clothes to electronics, will need to prepare for basic customs requirements, such as keeping sufficient records of imported goods. Traders will also need to consider how they account for and pay VAT on imported goods. Traders will then have up to six months to complete customs declarations. While tariffs 6

will be payable where due on relevant goods, payments can be deferred until the customs declaration has been made. UK Safety and Security declarations will not be required on imports to Great Britain from the EU for the first six months. Full customs declarations will be needed from this date for controlled goods (as listed in Annex C) and excise goods like alcohol and tobacco products. There will also be physical checks at the point of destination or other approved premises on all high-risk live animals and high-priority plants and plant products, and a requirement to obtain the relevant documentation and pre-notify for certain movements, but they will not be required to enter GB via a point of entry with an appropriate Border Control Post (BCP). Export declarations and UK exit Safety and Security declarations will be required for most goods. Traders importing and exporting goods using the Common Transit Convention will need to follow all of the transit procedures – these will not be introduced in stages. The Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) will be introduced from January only for transit movements. From April 2021: All products of animal origin (POAO) – for example meat, honey, milk or egg products – and all regulated plants and plant products will also require pre-notification and the relevant health documentation. Any physical checks will continue to be conducted at the point of destination until July 2021. /company/dorset-chamber/
However, this will not change how many of the requirements and processes contained in the Border Operating Model. The actions that will still be required are listed below: • •
•
•
•
• •
•
The requirement for a GB EORI number The requirement for an EU EORI number (if you are conducting any EU customs processes) Customs declarations for both imports and exports for GB and the EU (if importing noncontrolled goods to GB, you can still benefit from delayed declarations for imports up to 6 months from the point of import as detailed in section 1.1.3 of the border operating model) UK and EU safety and security declarations will be required on both imports and exports although there will still be a six month waiver on imports Traders will need to be able to demonstrate the origin of their goods in order to benefit from the preferential tariff rates agreed in the FTA, this is known as Rules of Origin Sanitary and phytosanitary controls and checks will still take place International convention requirements – such as those under the Common Transit Convention Passenger requirements – such as the ending of acceptance of EU ID cards.

Q&A: How can we make sure that our kids are safe online? These days, children grow up in a hyper-connected world where technology is present in practically every facet of their lives. From interactive learning to instant communication through smartphones and social media, kids are immersed in tech from an early age. This can make it hard for parents – especially those who might not be as tech savvy – to know exactly how to manage their children’s use of technology. Most people have not received formal training on how to use technology safely, and even if they have, things change so rapidly that it can feel like you are constantly playing catch-up. In order to try to understand how kids are feeling about staying safe online, four members of the team at ESET spoke to their children to ask them about their experiences with computers and mobile devices. Have you had lessons at school about how to be safe online?
Sara, 11 years old: “No. We have IT lessons, which are more related to the usage of devices, not about security and what to avoid or be careful about.” Adela, 11 years old: “No, we didn’t have lessons at my primary school about how to be safe online or how to surf the internet. The only information I have about how to be safe online is from my older sister and parents.” Max, 12 years old: “We watched some [safety] videos when we were younger at school, but I think we should watch some [more] now because most of us have started to use social media, and I don’t think we know how to use it
properly. In my opinion, we should learn more about it or just talk about it more because it's very important to know about dangers on social media.” Darma, 11 years old: “Yes, I had a lesson about it in the fifth grade, but now I am in the sixth grade … maybe we should have more?” Top tip: While schools may provide some lessons on how to stay safe online, it is important that you don’t only rely on this to keep your children safe. Providing your kids with clear and simple advice on how to use their devices securely is crucial. For more advice on how to do so, check out this Q&A with the ESET team on how parents can keep children safe in a connected world. Do you feel safe when you use a computer, mobile phone or tablet?
Sara: “In general, I am not afraid. However, I am cautious about what applications or content I see or click on. If there is something I would be afraid of, it would be if somebody erased my photos.” Darma: “I feel safe when I use a computer or mobile phone because I have ESET there to protect me.” Max: “It depends what I'm doing on my smartphone or laptop. I feel much safer when
I am just watching some videos or listening to music, but when I am on social media like TikTok or Instagram, I feel I have to be more careful. For example, I have to decide which photos, videos or messages are okay to share with other people, or if I want to share a joke if it would be understood and appropriate.” Adela: “Yes, thanks to ESET I feel safe when I use a computer.” Top tip: Making sure that comprehensive antivirus software, such as ESET Mobile Security, is installed on any mobile device that kids are using is a big help in preventing problems before they arise. Combined with straightforward advice, this is a great first step to making sure that children are not exposed to harmful or dangerous content. Who would you go to if you did not feel safe online?
Darma: “I would go to my dad or mum.” Max: “I don't feel unsafe on the internet but if I did, I would tell my mum because she works for an antivirus company and she speaks with me about those things. I mostly watch videos or listen to music – not such dangerous activities. I joined Instagram recently, but I don't post often, and if I want to post something I make sure not to share my face or any other private information. My account is private, so I don't feel very unsafe.” Adela: “If I didn’t feel safe online, I would go to my older sister, but only because she has better ‘online skills’ than my mum.” Sara: “Daddy.” Top tip: It is important that children feel safe to come to their parents with any questions or issues they may have concerning technology, so that if a serious problem arises, they know who to turn to. By having open conversations about both your and their experiences with technology, you can get an understanding of how to best advise them on how to be safe. An understanding of kids’ habits and frank conversations about how to stay safe online, combined with trusted antivirus software on your child’s mobile phone, can reduce the risks they are exposed to. You can also head over to our Safer Kids Online website for free activities and resources, to help keep your little ones protected. www.eset.com/uk

The President’s Column by Liz Willingham
The month of love is upon us! Yes, I know – Valentine’s Day can be perceived as over hyped but commercially it is one of the strongest days for retail and hospitality which we really should try to support this year where we can. And showing each other some acts of kindness goes a long way, even if it’s a simple note to say “you’re appreciated”! I know our workforces in all sectors will gain a lot from a simple acknowledgement from their leaders right now….are you doing enough to share the love?! On that note of ‘sharing is caring’, 2021 has already brought a lot of positives and I’d like to think this sets the tone for a good year. It will remain challenging for some, of course, but in the mix, there is a lot of good news. Here is just a snapshot of some chamber member highs! We were excited for Hall & Woodhouse as one of their House Managers, Richard Curtis, was awarded a BEM from Her Majesty for his relentless charitable fundraising across the year. Such a boost for the team and the whole business and, in our PR role, a joy to help shout about. 2020 was the third consecutive year of 600% growth for Premier Business Partner, OnBuy.com. This year sees its global roll out and significant plans for further recruitment. Bournemouth & Poole College received a record number of adults enrolling onto its free adult online courses during lockdown. More than 500 learners registered to develop a new skill and gain a qualification between March and June 2020, on one or more of The College’s 24 free online courses. This is a 44% rise in learners compared to the same period last year. Dolphin Shopping Centre saw the opening of the first independent traders in ‘Kingland’ including Greenslades, Grounded Coffee, and Wild Roots. It has even been championed by founder of Not On The High Street, Holly Tucker, as part of her ‘Shop Independent’ campaign.
A beacon of business in North Dorset, BV Dairy, achieved grant funding to the tune of £750,000 from the Rural Development Programme to secure its £2m factory expansion plan. It is anticipated to create over 32 highskilled jobs for the North Dorset rural community. Ferndown-based Superior has been involved in the global fight against the virus in the manufacture of the COVID-19 vaccine by supplying o-rings and sealing solutions for use in the production of this critical treatment. We hear positive insight from holiday park companies with caravan ownership becoming an attractive option as international travel remains prohibitive. Knowing the staycation is here for a while, many are committing to investments not considered before. I feel fortunate that in my role I get to hear about the strong position of a broad mix of sectors; IT, retail (where its online offering has evolved), legal services, accountancy, mortgage brokers, construction, and yes, I will include it, our own communications sector is doing OK too, thank goodness. Reputation is king and that keeps us busy. The underlying theme is businesses continue to hold their own. Adapting, responding, being open to change, listening to your customers are all critical and those who are doing so are reaping the rewards. The world has catapulted forward many years from what was inevitable anyway in areas such as the high street versus online sales and meetings/events heading into a permanent hybrid of online/offline. I know I mentioned the roaring 20’s in my last article which followed three hard winters of the Spanish flu. Its only my opinion but I believe we will have a similar upturn in the years to come, as long as we are ready, have the energy to evolve, be prepared to invest where necessary and are open to listening to those who are going to be driving forward in that era, our young people. An event we held in January with our Digipigz community of 16 to 24 year olds, titled ‘Dorset

Karen Hay, event manager at Diverse Abilities, commented: “Dorset Neon Run is a really fun event and as it isn’t time chipped allows participants to run, jog, walk, or dance at their own pace. We are looking forward to a night of fundraising in real life after months of socialising online and it’s a great excuse to dress up in neon gear and face paint, while having a laugh with your mates.” Diverse Abilities is working alongside BCP Council to ensure the event runs within COVID

100 people attend Simply Online Our first Simply Online event of 2021 last month had triple figure attendance. This demonstrates both the need for people to stay connected at this difficult time for their business’ as well as their own personal wellbeing - and that Simply continues to be THE place that members – and now nonmembers can come to for a warm welcome, to discuss the serious matters of the day, and importantly, find support and even laugh. These events are always very highly attended. That is why we are giving non-members the opportunity to attend one event free; while we provide the platform, it is our members who ‘make’ the events through their mutual support, humour, friendships, and a combined effort to get Dorset’s business community through these trying days and out the other side - together. 4 Sins to avoid – Your responsibilities as a Director Clive Fortis, a director of Antony Batty & Company, Insolvency Practitioners and business turnaround specialists, points out how important it is for directors to ensure they carry out their responsibilities, especially right now. “As we enter a 3rd national lockdown, it can only get harder and harder for many financially distressed companies to survive, despite government support. With the end of January tax bill likely to bring further financial hardship to companies struggling to survive, and with the first CBIL repayments, for example, only 3 months or so away, many businesses will be teetering on the edge of insolvency. That is when directors need to be especially vigilant. The fiduciary duties of directors at insolvency to their creditors and shareholders are unchanged by Covid-19. If insolvent, company directors must tread very carefully to avoid personal liability to creditors and the possibility of misfeasance claims, director disqualification, or even prison. It is also worth highlighting that if CBILs are mis-used and the receiving company becomes insolvent, Insolvency Practitioners have statutory powers of investigation, with personal liability for directors again being a likely outcome for the outstanding loan. 14
February 2021 | Dorset Business Focus
The 4 key sins for directors to avoid (as detailed in the Insolvency Act, 1986) when their company is insolvent are: •
Wrongful Trading. This a civil offence and occurs when a company continues to trade whilst insolvent.
•
Fraudulent Trading. This is a criminal offence where a director knows his/her company is insolvent and deliberately attempts to deny creditors what they are owed.
•
Creditor Preferences. Directors must not show preference to one creditor over any other.
•
Transactions at an Undervalue. Any transaction for asset disposal must be at arms-length and full value.
Directors must always be aware of their company’s financial position. Pleading ignorance is no excuse. Indeed, failure to recognise that a company is in financial difficulties is likely to be seen as irresponsible, negligent and proof of ‘unfit conduct’ by the directors.” /company/dorset-chamber/
Advice for Directors “One thing we know for certain is that the sooner under pressure directors act, the better the chance of survival. Figures from R3 (the Association of Business Recovery Professionals), for example, show that over 40% of insolvent businesses are rescued by Insolvency Practitioners. Options range from providing access to finance to help turnaround to the breathing space that insolvency procedures such as Company Voluntary Arrangements and Administrations provide. Liquidation is not inevitable. In addition, the earlier directors talk to an Insolvency Practitioner the quicker they can be advised on what measures to take to avoid breaching their responsibilities.” www.antonybatty.com

Left to right Zoom EV CEO Greg Fairbotham, Zoom EV chief commercial officer James Jean-Louis and Hendy Group commercial director Mark Busby
Hendy Group join forces with Zoom EV to offer electric vehicles Customers switching to electric are being given a helping hand by one automotive group which is offering far more than just the vehicle. Hendy Group, which represents 21 manufacturers across the south coast, has joined forces with Zoom EV to offer electric vehicle customers a host of benefits to make the transition as smooth as possible. Hendy Group’s commercial director Mark Busby said the partnership with Zoom EV will provide reassurance to customers considering electric vehicles that they can easily access the right services. “Part of the experience of purchasing an electric car or van from Hendy Group is that we will provide our customers with access to key EV services with specific rates. Customers will receive a benefits package, unique to themselves, which gives them access to a range of discounts on public and home charging, as well as EV energy tariffs and nationwide parking,” said Mark. “It’s designed to make the whole transition to EV as easy and seamless for more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
customers as possible. “This in turn will raise awareness of the infrastructure in place to support electric vehicles, as well as helping those who’ve bought from us to save money going forward.” The partnership comes at a time of massive growth for EV sales with one in 10 new cars sold in the UK being either a battery or plug-in hybrid vehicle. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says that new models continue to increase customer choice and demand for battery electric vehicles has risen dramatically. “We know that more and more people are considering electric for their next vehicle and we want to make sure that we make the buying and owning process as seamless and easy as possible for these customers and that they can be reassured we can provide a truly comprehensive service,” said Mark. “We know there are still concerns among some motorists about going electric but we believe the combination of amazing new
electric vehicles on the road and the benefits and knowledge from Zoom EV will reassure motorists and help them enjoy the new electric road ahead.” Zoom EV chief executive officer Greg Fairbotham said he was delighted to welcome Hendy customers to the Zoom EV experience. “By working with Hendy, we are ensuring that electric car and van drivers get access to the essential services they need to run their vehicles and save money. By providing benefits across leading public charging, home charging, EV energy tariffs and nationwide parking, we are helping customers make the switch to electric as seamless as possible,” said Greg. “It’s important that we all work together to make buying and owning an electric vehicle as easy and enjoyable as possible.” The Zoom EV benefits package is now available on all new and used electric vehicles from Hendy Group. www.hendy.co.uk 17

TDSi Launches Powerful New Features for GARDiS Range Integrated security manufacturer TDSi is pleased to announce a raft of new features for its GARDiS range of integrated software and hardware security systems. Additional features for 2021 include integration options for Lift Control, Area Occupancy, and ANPR – which are all designed to assist with not only security, but also ongoing safeguarding of health and social distancing requirements. Tina Baker, TDSi’s Software Project Manager commented, “The new functions are available as licensing options right now, making them an easy and highly affordable addition for any size and type of security and safety project. The expanding GARDiS range provides end users with powerful options to scale their security and safety systems to meet rapidly changing needs and circumstances, whilst protecting budgets by ensuring capital expenditure costs are kept to a minimum.” Whilst developed to support common security needs, the new Lift Control integration, Area Occupancy, and ANPR features are particularly well suited to the evolving safety requirements of workplaces in the wake of COVID-19. Lift Control for instance can be used not only to make moving between floors more efficient (and secure) around a building, but also to limit the direct contact of authorised passengers. Area Occupancy provides obvious benefits in reducing the numbers of people within a secure area (including support for ‘traffic light’ systems), 20
February 2021 | Dorset Business Focus
and ANPR additionally provides further records of those present at a facility to enhance Track and Trace data, as well as granting secure access to vehicles. The new features join a raft of other security and safety functions which are now an integrated part of the GARDiS offering. With the original version of the GARDiS software launched at the end of 2019, TDSi launched Version 2.0 in October 2020 which added further functionality including Fire Door release and Site Lock Down functions, along with integration with ASSA ABLOY Aperio and SimonsVoss SmartIntego wireless locks. It is available in two versions - Express which is free of charge and enables the inclusion of 20 doors, and PRO, which enables the end user to add as many additional door licenses as required at one site for one organisation. The PRO version provides security installers with the perfect base to provide Software as a Service (SaaS) from a single-installation web browser-based application that is fully modular and scalable. It also features a REST API (‘Fusion’) option and full Software Development Kit (SDK), enabling it to be fully integrated with a wide variety of Video Management (VMS), Time & Attendance or third-party control systems. To make the integration between the powerful GARDiS software and secured access points even easier, TDSi’s GARDiS Access Controllers are also designed to integrate seamlessly with /company/dorset-chamber/
it. With a web server embedded in the hardware, these controllers are fully cyber secure and easy/quick to install (with one, two or four door versions to suit all requirements and budgets). The ability to add four door slave units to these master controllers ensures a highly cost effective system. Tina concludes, “The latest enhancements are joined by the ability to update the GARDiS firmware directly through the software’s online connection. By doing away with this previously manually-intensive process, we now ensure reduced downtime and remove the inconvenience for the installer and help support social distancing too. By building the GARDiS ecosystem around a secure online approach, TDSi is providing installers and end users alike with a highly flexible, secure, userfriendly, reliable and future-proof integrated solution which is constantly enhanced, refined, and improved. We look forward to announcing further enhancements later this year!” www.tdsi.co.uk

New business park opens for business A new business park has thrown open its gates in Christchurch in a boost for the local economy. Construction work has been completed at The Penton Business Park in Stony Lane in a £2.5m regeneration of a formerly disused site. The Penton Motor Group has invested in the commercial property development to create a trading hub for firms, with up to 30 jobs being created. Fellow Christchurch firm John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has been engaged to provide and install the full frame and envelope and has designed and manufactured the steel frames, with installation of the metal decking, cladding, roof sheeting, glazing and doors for the retail park. Toolstation has become the first occupier to open in one of four units at the park. A national tyre company and a major motorcycle dealership are also due to move in. Simon Boyd, Managing Director at 130-strong REIDsteel, said: “As a Christchurch firm it is great to be involved in this superb development on our own doorstep. “It’s been a privilege to take the scheme from the design of its structural steel, cladding. glazing and doors through to fabrication and installation. “Our thanks to the Penton Motor Group for
letting us play our part in supporting the local economy and community with this project.” REIDsteel used 65 tonnes of British Steel as well as British made Tata composite panels for cladding at the site. Over the past eight years the Penton Motor Group has built four new showrooms for its franchised motor business and renovated a further three separate investment buildings. The park is a new direction for the longestablished Wilson family business, which has substantial locations in Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury and Andover for their motor business. They have developed this ground-up commercial investment property to add to their non-motor trade portfolio. Penton Group Managing Director Robert Wilson said: “The completed park looks even better than we expected and it is great to see it open for business. “We are very pleased at the result and will be seeking similar investments in the area. For this business park to attract some national and substantial expanding companies to trade from this location is a major success. “It can only be good for the Christchurch and Bournemouth conurbation and local employment.

“It represents the major regeneration of a brown field-site which is expected to bring 30 plus new jobs and economic benefits for the area. “We are pleased to have worked with a local firm of the calibre of REIDsteel on this project along with other high-quality contractors in the area. Congratulations to all involved especially our Financial Director Jan Dibden and his team who successfully headed up this project.” The Penton Business Park extends over a total of 1,885 sq metres/20,300 sq ft on a site formerly occupied by Boyland Joinery. It includes ample parking for 50 vehicles. It is wholly owned and managed by the Penton Motor Group. The Group is a 100% family business of 50 years standing in the new and used car market with over 140 staff and turnover of £60 million. It has Vauxhall, Citroen, Peugeot and DS new and used dealerships in towns across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, including Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury and Andover. REIDsteel remains family owned and celebrated its centenary in 2019. It has exported to more than 140 countries to date. The firm specialises in providing entire steel frame and building envelope solutions all under one roof. Thanks to its in-house capabilities and expertise, it is regularly contracted to design, manufacture and supply complete steel structures including the cladding, glazing, louvres and staircases for projects anywhere in the UK, Europe and across the world. They include bridges, hospitals, sports stadia, disaster resilient buildings, defensive structures, churches, schools, industrial & commercial buildings, warehouses and advanced aircraft hangars.

Identity UK buy back your unwanted workwear to reduce landfill waste As a significant clothing and branded event merchandise supplier to the UK charitable events sector Identity UK, and partner company Workwear Pro Direct, are very aware of the negative impact that these large-scale events can have on the environment. Concerned at the volume of post-event materials that ended up in landfill and in line with the company’s sustainability ethos, Identity UK’s Managing Director, Martyn Perry launched a customer “Buy Back” scheme. We believe, the first company in the UK to offer such a service. Buy Back allows customers to send back their unwanted workwear in return for payment. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
For every 100kg of workwear that a customer returns they receive a £30 credit to their account. Since its launch in January 2019, 850kg of unwanted promotional clothing, workwear and event materials have been recycled under the Buy Back scheme. landfill. The first of its kind, Buy Back is a win for the environment and a win for customers. If you would like to know more about the Buy Back scheme, contact Martyn Perry at 0800 0239 290 Website launching soon www.workwearprodirect.com. 25

Lease extension reforms announced What are the new leasehold reforms?
The changes to leasehold property law include the following: It will be possible to extend leases to 990 years with zero ground rents. Lease extension premiums will be cheaper for leaseholders as a result of ‘marriage value’ payments being abolished where leases have already dropped below 80 years. An online calculator will be created to assist leaseholders to work out how much their lease extension or freehold will cost them; and Ground rents will be abolished in new leases that are being granted for the first time. Reforms to leasehold property The measures are claimed to be part of the ‘biggest reforms to English property law in 40 years’, making home ownership fairer and more secure. When will new leasehold reforms take effect? At the point of writing, the Government have not indicated when these proposals will become realised law, and so we are presently unable to give you formal advice as to how the announcements will directly affect you. However, we will of course be keeping abreast of developments and will update clients individually in due course. How will lease reforms effect ongoing transactions? It is yet to be seen how these announcements will affect ongoing transactions or what (if any) recourse leaseholders will have if they have already agreed their lease extension or freehold purchase premium (or if it has been determined by the First-tier Tribunal), but are yet to formally complete their transaction. Where individuals have agreed an ‘informal’ lease extension or freehold purchase, it may be that the alternative ‘statutory’ route may be more beneficial under the proposals (when enacted) if it means a better deal can be achieved. These are both things that we shall be keeping an eye on in order to advise our clients appropriately once the answers become clear. Leaseholders: So, what happens next? The planned reforms have only just been outlined as above, though the government has not yet made an announcement as to when they will take effect. Our advice is to sit tight and wait for a timetable to be announced. As soon as we know, we will update our site and share on social media and by email. Individual existing clients will be contacted directly with advice on their next steps as and when it becomes clear what should be done. Leasehold specialist solicitors in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the New Forest Our specialist Lease Extension Team is one of the largest in the region and are happy to discuss any of the issues outlined in this article. www.frettens.co.uk | 01202 499255 26

Leading cyber firm urging more women to join the sector
A leading cyber-security company has appointed a graduate to its growing team of experts – and is urging more women to join the sector. Lucy Dalley, who graduated with a First in cyber security management from Bournemouth University, is now a consultant at C3IA Solutions in Poole, Dorset. The company says there are more jobs than there are qualified personnel and the recent lockdowns have accelerated the need for cyber staff. It says that the idea of ‘tech’ puts women off, but that it shouldn’t because cyber-security is such a broad sector it requires many different skills. Within the industry just 20 per cent of staff are women but the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is trying to change that. Lucy, originally from Southampton, said: “I know that I am part if a small minority working in cyber – but there is no good reason why women shouldn’t make it a career. “I have been involved with the NCSC’s Cyber First scheme which is introducing young people to cyber security. If girls are engaged early they are more likely to view it as a career. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
“I’d urge careers officers at schools to make the case for cyber; it is a varied, fast-moving and interesting area in which to work. “We know from the work at Bletchley Park during the war what value women added and it is a growing sector in which there will be jobs. “I am a security consultant and focus presently on education and awareness training. “With more people working from home and using the internet the cyber criminals have more people to target – and they are doing so. “My degree dissertation was on social engineering, which is the ways people use to manipulate others – online or in person – to gain information. “Another area of interest is cyber psychology; trying to understand the hackers and their victims in order to prevent cyber-crime. “With many cyber criminals operating from rogue states the chances of them being caught are extremely small, so protecting potential victims becomes more important. “Technical surveillance counter measures (TSCM) - or bug-sweeping - is a further area of growth that is not overtly techy.
“Businesses need to take cyber-security seriously and more are becoming Cyber Essentials certified, which is a great start. “Recently we have seen a huge increase in phishing scams, mostly relating to Covid. “Lots of fake emails are going around claiming to be for Covid tests or vaccinations or cheap deals for PPE. “I would urge young people looking for a career to consider cyber security; it’s relevant to everybody’s life and is a real growth sector.” Matt Horan, security director at C3IA Solutions, said: “We need more young people going into the industry which will be better with a more diverse workforce. “We initially had Lucy with us for a year during her degree and she is now a valued member of the team. “I’d echo Lucy’s calls for more women to look a cyber-security as a career.” www.c3ia.co.uk

Already claiming R&D tax credits? This is an annual cashback opportunity that many innovative businesses will be aware of. Even if you have made a claim in the past, there is every chance it can be improved on. This is an additional cash flow benefit that may be especially useful to businesses during the pandemic. You may be eligible for around 200% more than was claimed. How? Rob Sowden of consultancy Business Cash Enabler advises: “Some businesses have received small amounts via a DIY claim or a claim compiled by their accountant, however, there is almost always additional cash benefit available, based on a detailed technical appraisal of the innovation activities. Receiving something back from HMRC is deemed as ‘success’, often without realising they left a pile of cash on the table. Business owners/directors should ask themselves: • Did our company submit its own claim? • Did the person/s assessing the claim fully understand the legislation? • Were they aware of ALL qualifying activities, or did they focus on one or two key projects? • If our accountant compiled a claim, did they carry out a detailed technical assessment,
30
or did they ask us to write the technical report? • In reality, did we do much of the work and then we were charged a fee for the work we did ourselves? • Are we confident that if HMRC raise an enquiry that we and/ or our accountant can defend the claim? Of course, HMRC won’t know to point out if you have under-claimed, but they may determine that ineligible costs were claimed and seek repayment of some or all of the benefit received, potentially up to six years later. It’s a fair and most generous scheme but it does have rules. Much safer to use a specialist claims management provider that assigns a technical analyst to assess all qualifying activities, write up both technical and financial reports and deal with any enquiry handling arising, all as part of a no-win-no-fee model, thereby posing no financial risk or loss to a business.
February 2021 | Dorset Business Focus
I have directed many businesses to a specialist provider that assigns a technical analyst and has a record of uplifting average values by 200% on claims already submitted. A free appraisal of claims already submitted is available. If there is nothing else to claim, there is his nothing else to do, and no fee, but it gives peace of mind. In the event that there is more, the provider will only charge its success fee on the additional benefit identified. Nothing to lose, everything to gain. If you haven’t claimed at all and are eligible, then there could be tens of thousands on the table, still within the 2-year claim window. If a year-end is looming, acting well ahead of that is critical to avoid potential loss of an entire year’s benefit.”
To help businesses evaluate eligibility headlines the following questions may be useful: • Do you design and make new products? • Do you seek to improve processes, services, materials or devices? • Do you make prototypes or perform testing? • Do you develop software or IT solutions? • Have you invested in failed projects or developed products that were never launched? • Do you employ any staff with a technical or scientific background? For more information visit www.businesscashenabler.co.uk

Latest GCSE results offer students chance to develop their careers Bournemouth & Poole College has announced its latest GCSE exam results in English and Maths, demonstrating success levels are even higher than last year. Students joining the College in September with a GCSE grade 3 in English and Maths worked towards exam resits held in November, offering the opportunity to gain the standard pass grade 4 or above needed for future academic and career progression. Over 165 students exceeded their previous GCSE results that they achieved prior to joining the College, with over 40 percent of the students achieving a grade 4 or above in English, and 20 percent a grade 4 or above in Maths. Tracey Griffin, Assistant Principal of Curriculum at Bournemouth & Poole College, said: “We are delighted with the fantastic results that our students have achieved in the November GCSE English and Maths exams. Our students have displayed great dedication to their studies and true resilience during what has been a turbulent year for education. It is worth noting that the exams took place just as we entered the more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
second national lockdown and was in COVIDSecure conditions. “We are very proud of how our students and teaching team have adapted to the current challenging circumstances and we remain committed to delivering the highest standard of education.” Amelia Surrey, a Level 2 Applied Science student at the College, achieved a GCSE Grade 8 in English and a 5 in Maths in the November exam. Amelia said: “I am so happy with my results. I was home-schooled before starting at the College, so when the GCSE exams were cancelled last year, I wasn’t able to obtain a CAG result. “Being able to sit my GCSEs at College alongside my course has meant that I have been able to get the grades I need to progress onto the next level. I eventually want to work within the NHS, so getting these grades is really important.”
In summer 2020, the College’s GCSE students received outstanding pass rates, with 99.53 percent in English and 100 percent in Maths. Of these results, 44 percent in English and 39 percent in maths received high grades (9-4). Thanks to the results high grades achieved by College students, the College was awarded the top position in the National Achievement Rate table for English and maths GCSEs, out of 162 colleges across the country. The College is now taking applications from students and adult learners looking to enrol on a full-time course starting this month or part-time courses starting up to April.

Ferndown manufacturer plays vital part in production of Covid-19 vaccine As the Government rapidly scales-up its COVID-19 vaccination delivery plan, Ferndown-based company Superior has confirmed its commitment in the global fight against the virus through its involvement in the manufacture of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Global standards body names Actisense Chief Engineer as NMEA 2000 Committee Chair The NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) has named Andy Campbell as their next NMEA 2000 Committee Chair. Mr Campbell is the Chief Engineer at the specialist marine electronics brand, Actisense – based in Poole, United Kingdom – who have been members of the internationally respected standards organisation since the brand was launched by Active Research Ltd. in 2001. Actisense have long consulted on and contributed to the popular marine industry electronics standards, allowing them to create a host of useful online resources, plus free apps for boaters and installers. Actisense Chief Engineer, Andy Campbell, said: “I’ve been an active member of various NMEA 2000 Working Groups over the past 12 years, absorbing the inner workings of NMEA Standards and I now feel honoured and ready to accept the invitation to be the NMEA 2000 chair. The excellence of the NMEA 2000 committees over the past 20 years has enabled NMEA 2000 to gain the exceptional market penetration and respect that it has today. I’m excited to continue working with manufacturers, technical installers, commercial dealers and boating enthusiasts as we continue to drive these standards forward and cultivate further innovation.” Mark Oslund, Director of Standards at the NMEA, commented: “As 2021 begins, we hope for a better and healthier year. We sincerely thank all NMEA 2000 standard contributors. We also thank Mr. Lee Luft, who has chaired the NMEA 2000 Technical Standards Committee for several years. Mr. Luft has handed the torch to our new NMEA 2000 Committee Chair, Andy Campbell from Actisense, and NMEA 2000 Co-Chair Andrew Bazan from Mercury Marine. Both Andy and Andrew will build off the strong foundation that Mr. Luft has created and are ready to lead NMEA 2000 into the future.” Actisense's have an extensive range of NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 products. Their most popular products include their NMEA Buffers, NMEA Conversion Gateways, and NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi Gateway.
The family-owned manufacturer has been working hard to support the large-scale process of rapidly manufacturing billions of vaccine doses, by supplying o-rings and sealing solutions for use in the production of the crucial treatment. Tim Brown, managing director at Superior, says: “The roll out of the vaccine is a vital step in the fight against coronavirus, and we’re proud that our work is aiding the critical production, processing, filtration and separation equipment used in the manufacturing of the vaccine.” The manufacturing of the vaccine includes a complex filtering process that screens out impurities until a sterile vaccine is ready to be distributed into vials. Superior’s contribution in the production of the vaccine will assist the Department for Health and Social Care with its drive to deliver at least two million vaccinations in England per week by the end of January. The production of the vaccine is the latest support provided by Superior to help in the fight against coronavirus. Since April 2020, the company has ramped up the production of its o-rings and sealing solutions which are essential components in an extensive range of critical healthcare applications. These include disinfectant sprayers for sanitisation, pressure regulators and valves for use in critical care and sterile clean connectors for medical application as well as water treatment and food processing and filtration equipment.
Superior was also involved in the manufacturer of hundreds of ventilators for use in the NHS Nightingale Hospitals. The Superior o-rings used in each ventilator protect and optimise the functionality and performance of the equipment. Tim adds: “Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, Superior has drawn on the depth and breadth of its material science expertise and engineers to devise trusted o-ring and sealing solutions that support in the development of essential medical supplies. These supplies help to protect and support healthcare workers in their jobs, assist patients with recovery and eliminate the spread of the disease. “It’s through our design and manufacturing of high-precision, tight tolerance component parts that we will continue to apply our expertise in ways to help those on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.” Superior has maintained 24-hour operations to support its global customer base throughout the pandemic to supply, manufacture and provide technical support to customers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food and beverage, critical infrastructure and industrial technology markets. Work has helped to ensure essential services such as food production, communication and transportation, medical care and power generation continue operations. www.superiorltd.com

Volvo SUVs claim double honours in 2021 Company Car Today CCT100 Awards XC40 compact SUV wins Premium Crossover award for the third year running, commended by the judges as the “dominant force” in its segment. XC60 mid-size SUV takes top honour in the Premium SUV category, rewarded for its “excellent running costs and efficiency”. Volvo further praised for its deployment of plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid technology in its UK model range. The Volvo XC40 has scored an impressive hat-trick of wins, taking its third successive Premium Crossover title in the Company Car Today CCT100 Awards. This year, Volvo doubled up on its honours tally, with the mid-size XC60 winning the Premium SUV award. The results confirm the XC40’s status as the strongest proposition in the highly competitive compact SUV market, where it was the UK’s best-selling model overall in 2020. The XC40 and XC60’s appeal to business customers is founded on the efficiency of their powertrains (including multiple plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid options), their running costs, premium quality, desirability, generous equipment levels and cutting-edge safety technology. Paul Barker, Company Car Today Editor, commented: “A pair of wins for Volvo in our CCT100 Awards illustrates once more what a high-quality job the brand is doing with its latest model line-up and what a strong case it makes in the company car sector. “The XC40 is the dominant force in the premium crossover segment thanks to its striking styling, practicality and cost efficiency, while the XC60’s excellent running costs and

efficiency saw it take victory in the Premium SUV class. Both cars have successfully deployed plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid tech to great effect, and are excellent choices for company car drivers.” Rob Morris, Volvo Car UK’s Head of Fleet and Remarketing, said: “These awards demonstrate the genuine value our SUVs provide business customers, for whom efficiency and running costs are critical factors when making a purchase decision. With our electrification programme, we are strengthening these qualities while retaining all the impressive style, practicality and advanced technology that set these cars apart in their classes.” These results continue a strong performance by Volvo since the Company Car Today CCT100 Awards were introduced in 2018. year, the V40 and XC90 respectively won the Premium Lower Medium and Large SUV classes, while in 2019 the XC40 began its run of three successive wins in the Premium Crossover category. In 2020, the XC90 repeated its earlier success, as did the XC40. The Company Car Today CCT100 Awards are determined on a range of key factors that cover the priorities for business car customers, including emissions, price, running costs, tax ratings, practicality, desirability and the driving experience. An expert judging panel produces a shortlist of five models which best meet these criteria before selecting the overall winners. The way you hire from the EU has changed To hire someone from outside the UK, excluding Irish citizens, the job you are advertising must meet the minimum skill and salary thresholds: • •
•
The minimum skill level will be set at RQF3 (equivalent to A level) The minimum salary threshold will be the higher of £25,600 or the ‘going rate’ for that job – some employees may be paid less than £25,600, for example if their job is in a shortage occupation. Any applicants from outside the UK must also meet English language requirements.
Before applying to be a sponsor you should: • •
Check that the people you want to hire will meet the requirements for coming to the UK for work Check your business is eligible
To apply, you will need to: 1. 2. 3. Freedom of movement between the UK and EU ended on 31 December 2020. The UK has now implemented a points-based immigration system that treats EU and non-EU citizens equally. Anyone you want to hire from outside the UK, excluding Irish citizens, will need to apply for permission in advance. Employers will also need to register as a licensed sponsor to hire eligible people from outside the UK. The new system treats EU and non-EU citizens equally and transforms the way in which employers recruit from outside the UK.

People coming to work in the UK will need to meet certain requirements: • • • • • •
A job offer from an approved sponsor That job offer must be at the required skill and salary level They must speak English at the required level You will need to apply to be a licensed sponsor You’ll usually have a decision within 8 weeks Being a sponsor allows you to recruit skilled workers globally for 4 years
All applicants will be able to trade characteristics, such as their qualifications, against a lower salary to get the required number of points. If the job offer is less than the minimum salary requirement, but no less than £20,480, an applicant may still be eligible if they have:
• • •
A job offer in a specific shortage occupation A PhD relevant to the job A PhD in a STEM subject relevant to the job
There are different salary rules for workers in certain health or education jobs, and for ’new entrants‘at the start of their careers. Helen Stacey, MD of Aspire Jobs Recruitment Agency comments: “This is a significant shift in UK policy, whilst it was reported towards the end of 2020 it may well have been overlooked in all of the media around Covid.” Helen continues “Employers also need to be aware that the new system will not apply to EU employees already working for you in the UK. So, if you have any EU citizens and their family members living in the UK by 31 December 2020, they need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. You also need to make them aware that those eligible for the EU Settlement Scheme must apply by 30 June 2021. I can see this significantly impacting various industries such as hospitality (when it’s back up and running properly), healthcare and manufacturing. My advice would be to take a look at the Govt website and familiarise yourself with the rules now, to avoid any unnecessary delays in hiring” Aspire Jobs is a boutique recruitment agency based in Ringwood specialising in supplying permanent and fixed term contract to employers across Dorset and Hampshire. The National Farmers Union (NFU) are supporting farmers and the rural community through difficult times Amid the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 this year, farmers across the UK have continued to work tirelessly to put food on people’s tables. But the burden on the farmers themselves, as well as their families and other members of the rural community has made life tough in 2020. To understand the extent of this, we carried out a survey of our customers at the height of the national lockdown, and it showed that nearly three quarters of people reported feeling more isolated, and nearly a third reported feeling more anxious. The NFU Mutual Charitable Trust We believe no-one is more important to us than those in farming and the rural community. So we’ve been working hard to help during these unprecedented times. So far this year, the Trust has made donations totalling more than £774,000 across several national organisations that reach out to isolated and vulnerable people in the UK. They are: The Addington Fund, The Farming Community Network, Forage Aid, the National Emergencies Trust: Coronavirus Appeal, The Prince’s Countryside Fund, The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), RSABI, Rural Support and

The funding is supporting those experiencing stress or worry and helping farmers, their families and others who are facing challenges, as well as encouraging physical and mental wellbeing in our communities. At a time when the cancellation of fundraising events means that many charities are facing a funding gap, our support has allowed charities to continue to provide crucial support services, such as freephone telephone helplines, e-counselling, signposting to more sources of information, outreach activity and one-off grants to support individuals and families. The Farming Community Network, which provides help and support to farmers and their businesses is among the recipients of support from the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust this year. The charity’s CEO, Jude McCann, said: “We see the impact of Covid-19 as farming families face additional business and personal strains including bereavement and mental health issues. Since then, donations have helped other charities and organisations tackle big issues like rural poverty, food education, the future of farming, and mental and physical health. In the last ten years the Trust has donated more than £3 million to fund education and social welfare projects in towns and villages across the UK. We’re proud to deliver more than simply insurance. Frettens backing Christchurch Town Centre Neighbourhood Forum Neighbourhood planning is part of the government’s reform agenda that aims to incentivise housing and economic growth, put more power in the hands of local people and deliver a simpler planning system. Christchurch Town Centre Neighbourhood Plan The Town Centre Neighbourhood Plan is in its first consultation phase and is looking for input from businesses which have a connection with the area covered by the Plan (outlined below). The committee have set up a survey to gather input about what issues are more important for the plan to cover, that can be accessed here. Managing Partner, Matt Fretten, urges as many town centre businesses to take part as possible. “As an established Christchurch business with a long history of involvement in the town, we welcome any initiative that encourages local people to have more of an input into neighbourhood planning. 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, and town centres have been hit harder than most by COVID restrictions. It is during challenging times like these that community becomes even more important. Hopefully the neighbourhood plan will enable Christchurch businesses to be more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
supported as we recover together and welcome people back into the town throughout 2021 and beyond.” For the purposes of the neighbourhood plan, Christchurch Town is defined as a quite broad area covering the entire parish. It reaches out from the high street to include St Catherine's Hill, Barrack Road, Somerford, Mudeford, Stanpit, Jumpers, Friars Cliff and Purewell. You can view maps outlining the areas here. What is a neighbourhood plan? Christchurch is following other neighbourhoods in the borough who already have plans in place, including Boscombe and Pokesdown, Broadstone and Poole Quays. The main aims of the process are to: • provide communities with the opportunity to prepare planning policies for their area • be a community-initiated process, led by the business and residential communities • it is not compulsory; it is not about strategic issues and it is not about stopping development
The role of the neighbourhood forum The role of Christchurch Town Council is to: •
instigate the process of preparing the neighbourhood plan
•
lead on the plan preparation
•
involve key organisations and individuals in preparing the plan
•
keep people informed of progress on the plan
•
prepare the required evidence
•
ensure the required statutory duties are undertaken
The Neighbourhood Plan for Christchurch is being prepared by the Town Council with a 12 member committee who live and/or work in Christchurch and who comprise 5 Town Councillors and 7 volunteers who widely represent the local community giving a balanced representation of social, business, environmental and economic interests. Historically, Dorset has adjusted relatively quickly to shocks and typically maintained low unemployment. A fresh lockdown and the new EU trade deal make for a challenging start to 2021, once again testing the resilience of Dorset’s business community. While the impact of the pandemic on the hospitality, tourism and arts sectors has been significant and unemployment increased in 2020, the latest figures indicate that a cluster of Dorset’s key sectors are starting to pave a road to recovery. A review of local labour market information by Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), highlights that in 2020 recruitment in the financial services, utilities, professional services, scientific and technical activities was largely maintained, while the health and social care sector grew by a quarter. The review by Dorset LEP also highlights that alongside low-skilled workers, young people have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic due to almost half of 18-24 year olds being employed in distribution, hospitality and retail at the start of 2020. What this review clearly highlights is a mismatch between job vacancies in Dorset’s key sectors and the skills and experiences of a large proportion of Dorset’s available workforce. This mismatch creates risk for prolonged

unemployment for job seekers while skills gaps remain a challenge for employers, despite the increase in number of applicants. It is, therefore, critical that people gain new skills to support economic recovery. One long-term solution to help address this mismatch is for businesses to support young people through virtual work experiences. Experiences that can be accessed safely and remotely, yet still inspire and motivate young, local talent to progress in Dorset’s established and growing industries. Dorset LEP’s careers education lead, Dorset Careers Hub, is calling for local businesses to provide short work experiences, online, this summer for year 10 students. There is also opportunity to participate in a trial in the springtime. Businesses will have full support designing these virtual work experiences, tailored to your organisation and the skills young people need for the world of work.

5 Tips to Help Shape Your Social Media Strategy Social media is constantly changing and evolving, the methods in which we make our company's events, initiatives, and information available to our audiences must constantly change as well. As the world of social media marketing grows, it is more important than ever to have a robust strategy in place to try and 'woo' your audiences on a consistent basis and grow their trust as part of your social media strategy in 2021. While there are many things to consider, the experts at South Coast Social provide an overview of 5 important tips to ensure you start the year on top of your social media game... 1. Prioritise quality and authenticity This should have been your number one priority since day one, but it can never be said too much. As tools for creating engaging content become more popular and readily available, more and more companies are upping their game, making it harder to "stop the scroll." As consistently as you can, post high-quality, engaging visuals. If you have an important message for your audience, do not sell yourself short with easy or poorly executed content. Go the extra mile to acquire scroll-stopping videos, images, and relevant captions…. …Especially video! According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index, it was estimated that around nearly 80% of all internet traffic is now video. Social media platforms are increasingly prioritising video, as this format appeals across all demographic lines. Authenticity? This goes hand in hand with quality. Users are growing tired of fake content and while more is being done to prevent the spread of misinformation since the Covid-19 pandemic began, it is more important than ever to be authentic. We know that creating authentic content isn't always easy, but it will encourage your audience to have a growing trust in your brand. 2. Do a Content Audit A content audit is the process of collecting and analysing all the assets you have available on your website or otherwise, in this case – any relevant for social media use. When planning social content, knowing what is already readily available will save you time and effort and will help inspire you in creating new content, or knowing when to invest in a professional photoshoot (or start experimenting on your own!) Assess what can be repurposed, tweaked or deleted, and then categorise each of them by where that content falls in the buyer’s journey. Don't forget to add notes, as context is always key.
Stories. Stories have legitimately taken over social media since their launch in 2016, with over 500 million users watching them every day. One third of the most viewed Instagram Stories are from businesses - and you absolutely want to ensure you are part of that percentage! If you are having a hard time deciding what type of content to post to Stories, think quick, easily digestible, and memorable. Any content that requires your audience to 'lean in' and digest should be a Post. Everything else? Post that baby to a Story (and then add it to a Highlight!). 4. Spend time online Conversations online spread like wildfire. It's likely that you won't be able to keep up with all the topics of conversation around your niche that occur on a daily basis, but it is important to keep an eye on them, if and when your audience is taking part in them. If you are utilising a social content scheduling tool like Hootsuite or Buffer, it is essential to check in weekly - if not daily - and make sure that the content you have scheduled is still appropriate. You do not have to be on all social platforms!. With several big-name options to choose from including LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube, it is not feasible in terms of time or resources. Focus on the platforms your target audiences may be using…. LinkedIn: Most users have a college/advanced degree, and their incomes tend to be higher. Twitter: 63% of all Twitter users worldwide are between the ages of 35 and 65. Instagram: Instagram skews more towards younger users: - Age 18-29: 67% - Age 30-49: 47% - Age 50-64: 23% - Age 65+: 8%
Snapchat: Most users are under the age of 34. Facebook: Facebook, while not as popular as Snapchat or Instagram with younger users, does span a wide range of ages. Pinterest: 25 percent more women use Pinterest than men. TikTok: Although TikTok is fairly secretive about its user demographics, one analysis revealed that 40% of TikTokers are under age 20 and another 26% are under 30. YouTube: Everyone seems to use YouTube! Set up a channel if relevant to your business. By being aware of your platform selection’s most prominent audiences, you can make the most of your time and effort - and reach the right people in the right places with your social media strategy. Don't forget to keep up to date with the latest trends for each platform. 5. Meet to discuss 'Crisis Communication' This is not exactly a revolutionary social media strategy. However, it is a fundamental one. 2020 has taught us many things but if there is one we need to take away for the upcoming year, it's that a timely response is absolutely paramount. Now, more than ever, what your company stands for is incredibly important to your audience. Try planning an internal meeting or a team Zoom to discuss the issues that occurred during 2020 and how you could have responded better socially. Based on what you find in that meeting, decide your company’s stance and plan ways to communicate quickly about similar issues. You may never need to use these responses externally, but knowing these things will help your brand's focus either way. This list only scratches the surface, but if you follow the five steps outlined here, it is highly likely that you will have a robust social content plan matched by an audience that trusts both your online presence and your brand in 2021, but we know it can also be rather time consuming... South Coast Social are a results driven social media agency for businesses that are truly focused on growth and expansion, with an impeccable reputation for social media marketing service and innovation. Contact us today to see how we can help you achieve the online presence your brand deserves. www.southcoastsocial.com
3. Utilise stories... like there's no tomorrow Most social audiences (not all, but most) are on Instagram. If they are not on Instagram, they're definitely on Facebook. Instagram and Facebook have few things in common, but one stands out screaming, "Hey! Look at me!" - and that's more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

The AA is advising drivers to keep their vehicles serviced and MOT’d While some drivers may be tempted to defer any vehicle maintenance until travel restrictions are eased, the AA is warning that cars not being used are arguably more in need of service than those in use. The Government has declared that MOT, servicing and repair centres are an essential service and remain open for business during the third lockdown. However, unlike the first lockdown, MOTs will not be extended*. Drivers can find local MOT slots through AA Smart Care and have the option for their car to be collected and delivered so they don’t have to travel away from home**. This is especially useful to people have been asked to shield due to their age or state of health, or if they are self-isolating. There will be no MOT extension this time around, so car owners will need to ensure they
fulfil their usual maintenance commitmentsJack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, says; “With many people either working from home or furloughed, some drivers may be tempted to just let their vehicle bypass the MOT date and only arrange it when they think lockdown restrictions will be eased. “However cars sat parked up for long periods of time can lead to issues such as; battery faults, seized brakes and flat tyres. These are just some of the reasons why it is just as important, if not more so, to keep your car regularly maintained. “There will be no MOT extension this time around, so car owners will need to ensure they fulfil their usual maintenance commitments. Likewise, servicing timescales still apply to keep a vehicle under warranty.
“Action throughout the lockdown could mean people can avoid a larger repair bill just as they want to start using their car again.” Dorset Chamber members will receive a 67% discount on AA Business Insurance starting at £48.13 per vehicle. Steve Bulley Head of Business Engagement at Dorset Chamber and car fanatic
As we are in another lockdown I thought I’d look forward to some of the new cars that will be available in 2021 and beyond
We have had the remake of the Beatle, Mini and Fiat 500 but now Renault have teased us with a return of the iconic Renault 5 which will be all electric. Before you get to excited Renault has yet to confirm when the production version of the Concept 5 will go on sale or give full technical specifications. The company has said it plans to roll out a host of electric vehicles (EV) by 2025. Let’s hope that Renault stay true to these protype pictures and deliver a retro inspired all electric Renault 5 EV soon. www.hendy.co.uk/renault
Lexus have launched their first fully electric car after years of hybrid models. The new UX 300e is the EV version of the brands smallest SUV. The car comes with a wealth of safety features including, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System, Lane Tracing Assist and Road Sign Assist. With a range of 196 miles and 80% charge in 50mins this car will take this rather exclusive brand more mainstream which is a good thing. www.hendy.co.uk/lexus
AUDI has been at the forefront of large electric SUV’s. The Q4 e-tron coupe is only a concept at this stage, but with the production version due s this year, the new SUV coupé follows its Q4 e-tron sibling. Mechanically identical beneath the skin, both versions will have an 82kWh battery located under the floor, driving two electric motors: one for the front axle, one at the rear. Total power output is 225kw (306PS) with a WLTP-certified range of up to 279 miles. www.pooleaudi.co.uk
VW claim its new ID.4 is powerful like an SUV and sustainable. The company say that you have a neutral C02 balance right from the start of ownership. With a 77 kWh battery capacity you can achieve range of up to 310miles which is impressive. With space inside for 5 to travel comfortably and a very high specification this good looking offering from WV will be an alternative choice for those currently looking at the Tiguan. www.breezevw.co.uk
The Pure Electric Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is the brands first all electric car. Capable of over 200 miles electric driving, this model is a milestone in Volvo's electrified future. In true Volvo spirit you just take your seat, select gear and go – there’s no start button. The maker claims a fast-charge from zero to 80% in around 40 minutes which is in line with current expectations. www.volvocarspoole.co.uk
BMW has teased its first purely electric Gran Coupé, the BMW Concept i4. Equipped with fifth generation BMW eDrive technology, it promises a range of up to 372 miles. The car in the picture will be extremely similar to the car you’ll see in the showroom. Inside will be a digital affair with touchscreens dominating the dashboard complimented by the build quality you’d expect from BMW. The new face of BMW has divided option but looks perfect got the i4. www.marshallbournemouthbmw.co.uk

Local PR agency owner Darren Northeast made a Fellow Darren Northeast, Founder and Managing Director of Darren Northeast PR in Bournemouth, has been made a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the profession. Darren was nominated for a Fellowship and awarded the professional body’s highest membership grade following a review by the CIPR and an independent assessor. Fellowships are only awarded to PR practitoners who demonstrate strong evidence of professional excellence, leadership, commitment to the industry, and service to the Institute. Fellows have an important role, promoting professionalism, demonstrating best practice, and championing the PR profession. Darren Northeast FCIPR said: “I am very proud to work in the public relations industry, and always have been. I have built up my agency over the past 16 years around core values - Passion, Expertise, Trust, and Results – and I embed those values in everything I do. “This is a huge honour and I am delighted to be recognised amongst the leading PR and communications professionals in the UK.” Darren, one of seven new Fellows announced in January, has been a member of the CIPR for around six years, spending three years at the helm of the regional group where he drove forward work to engage with and support the CIPR Wessex members and the wider
community, including through large-scale events and talks. He is committed to nurturing those in the earliest stages of their career, promoting talented young employees within his team, taking on university students for work placements, training apprentices, and working closely with Bournemouth and Southampton Universities, including delivering numerous lectures to their PR and Communications students. Darren added: “Developing the next generation of PR professionals is something I’m incredibly passionate about and I have dedicated a lot of my career to supporting talented young people and helping them fly. “Having been met with so much support and encouragement from others as I’ve worked to forge a successful business, it is so important to me to give back to the industry that I love. I want to continue to work with and support others, to be generous with my time, and the knowledge and skills I’ve gained over the years, and to be an ambassador for the CIPR.” In a message to the new Fellows, CIPR President Mandy Pearse, Chart PR, FCIPR, said: “This is a much-deserved recognition of your professional achievements and the time and expertise you have each given back to our community. As ambassadors for the CIPR you drive forward our values of a commitment to
life-long learning, professionalism, and ethical practice which does so much for the whole profession and demonstrates our value and purpose to the outside world.” Darren is the second person at the company to achieve this fellowship, with DNPR’s nonexecutive director, Philip Dewhurst, also holding the accolade. Philip, who was past CIPR President, said: “Darren’s relentless energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism, coupled with his strong ethical values, have contributed greatly to his success in the region through his business.” Founded by Darren Northeast in 2005, DNPR has gone from strength to strength, building its reputation as a hard-working and friendly creative agency. In 2019 DNPR won Gold and Silver in the CIPR PRide Awards. The agency has also previously won ‘Small Business of the Year’ at the Blackmore Vale Business Awards and a prestigious Dorset Business Award www.darrennortheast.co.uk
