This month’s issue is all about looking to the future; celebrating the rising stars of the Dorset Apprenticeship Awards 2024 and the rapidly expanding Future Leaders initiative.
We asked Toni Taylor, chair of Dorset Chamber Future Leaders, to write this issue’s welcome…
Do you remember your first networking event?
If yours was anything like mine, it was a pretty unnerving and uncomfortable experience, although I hasten to add that it was not a Dorset Chamber event.
For those in the earlier stages of their careers, the prospect of walking into a room full of strangers and trying to make a good impression can be daunting. I know it was for me. The awkward small talk, the fear of saying the wrong thing, the pressure to collect as many business cards as possible – it can all feel a bit overwhelming.
But here’s the thing: networking doesn’t have to be scary, but it is valuable.
Networking is about building relationships, not just collecting contacts. It’s about finding common ground, sharing ideas, and learning from others. And the more you do it, the easier it becomes. My first few networking events were a bit rough. But I quickly realised that most people are just as nervous as you are, and that people are genuinely interested in connecting and helping each other out.
As a business founder and director, and working in the recruitment sector, I see daily the importance of helping and supporting people to build their networking skills and confidence. It’s a skill that must be honed.
The Future Leaders programme was forged to support this. But it is more than a networking programme. It’s about building a community of future leaders. A network of professionals who can do business, together, both now and in the future.

forwards in their career. Dorset Chamber strives to be a modern, relevant and inclusive chamber and our Future Leaders programme demonstrates this commitment to cultivating talent and nurturing the next generation of business leaders.
Now in its second year, Future Leaders has hosted a series of popular networking events, offering opportunities to enhance individual networking skills, get insights from inspiring business leaders and entrepreneurs, develop those crucial interpersonal skills, and engage in discussions on key topics such as sustainability.
Ian Girling, chief executive of Dorset Chamber, said: “Future Leaders not only provides personal and professional development for young business people, it is also about succession planning for our local economy.
“This is an innovative and energetic programme that is making a huge impact and I would urge businesses to encourage their young people to become involved.”
Toni is MD and founder of recruitment specialists, Tru Talent. As chair of Future Leaders, she also sits on the Dorset Chamber Board representing and sharing issues raised by young professionals.
Toni is committed to Future Leaders and demonstrating the impact it has within the community, support businesses on the changing desires and needs of young professionals, and the opportunity to learn from each other as well as hearing from inspiring speakers at events.
In June 2023, Toni Taylor was appointed as chair of Future Leaders, with Jack Ormesher and David Massieu-King as joint vice-chairs.
The first Future Leaders event of 2024 was held at the LUSH Green Hub where attendees had the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals from the Dorset business community, as well as discover how to implement sustainable practises within the workplace and their personal lives.
Future Leaders Vice Chair Jack Ormesher gave an insightful presentation into the effective ways both individuals and business can become more sustainable and how to encourage others to introduce positive change to reduce their carbon footprint.
As I write this, it’s a lovely, late spring day and the sun is shining! Although the winter and shoulder seasons have qualities, you can’t beat the summer for me. People appear happier in general, greeting each other on dog walks now the climate has improved.
As business owners start to embrace the summer months, they have a unique opportunity to invest in the development of future leaders, establishing a culture of growth, innovation and resilience. By building on the energy and optimism of summer, organisations can sow the seeds of leadership excellence and ensure a good future for generations to come.
The longer days and warmer weather create opportunities for networking events, industry conferences and community engagement initiatives. These platforms not only enable future leaders to expand their professional networks, but also install some social responsibility.
As companies adapt to rapid technological advancements and shifting playing fields, the leaders of tomorrow are poised to navigate uncharted territories with agility, vision and resilience. Adaptability is one of the main traits amongst future leaders and they can thrive in environments characterised by uncertainty and change. These individuals possess the ability to change strategy quickly, building on emerging opportunities while keeping an eye on possible risks.
With modern society now becoming more aware of inclusivity, different cultures and diverse perspectives, the young are well placed to help guide and deal with the modern way of thinking and are key to planning the future of a business.
The retention of graduates and the building of new homes and infrastructure is key to economic growth in the BCP area, according to the latest research from Savills.
The firm hosted more than 130 clients and business contacts at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth on April 17.
After an introduction from Savills planning director Peter Lamb, researchers Clare Bailey and Paul Wellman took guests through the firm’s latest research, identifying areas of potential and how constraints could be overcome.
Bournemouth has a graduate retention rate of 27%, with 1,550 of its 5,900 graduates staying on for work each year. The rate fares better than other comparable cities, such as Brighton (22%), Norwich (22%) and Exeter (11%). However the rate needs to increase in order to unlock economic growth in BCP.
As part of retaining this talent and ensuring growth, innovation hubs and on the ground support are crucial, the research says, as they provide the resources and opportunities needed to pursue entrepreneurial ventures.
There is a strong need for new homes of all types and tenures, though this is not without its challenges with land constraints such as National Parks, National Landscapes, SSSIs, flood risk areas and the greenbelt. In the last three years, there has been an average of 750 net additional dwellings in
BCP. This falls short of the 2,766 new homes required per year to meet demand, according to the standard method housing need.
Savills research shows high value house prices in BCP are making home ownership unaffordable. For someone with a median salary in BCP of £33,000, only 6% of the market – a maximum value of £147,000 – is affordable, assuming a 10% deposit. For two median workers this increases to £290,000, or 39% of the market. In the rental market, a lack of supply has helped fuel increases to rents, also creating affordability issues. Additional purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) is also needed in BCP, where there is currently 7,300 PBSA beds to its 19,825 full time students.
Peter Lamb, planning director, Savills, said: “BCP and the wider Central South region is well placed to deliver growth, with a highly skilled talent pool not to mention an attractive coastal offer. But better retention of graduates to boost the high-value knowledge-based sectors and an increased delivery of all types of housing is vital to drive economic growth.
“Our research event proved a great opportunity to get together with clients and contacts from the local business community to collaborate, share ideas and discuss next steps to help BCP achieve its potential.”

Several key pieces of new legislation recently came into force affecting flexible working and family friendly rights. These new changes will likely require significant updates to your employee handbook, and so you should ensure your handbook is reviewed appropriately.
Two pieces of legislation have made significant changes to how you should respond to flexible working requests. The Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act 2023 has increased the number of flexible working requests that can be made in any 12-month period from one to two. Employers now have a two-month time limit to deal with requests, if no extension is agreed upon with the individual, decreased from three. Employees no longer need to explain how agreeing to their request would affect the business, and employers cannot refuse a request until they have consulted with the employee. The Flexible Working (Amendment) Regulations 2023 made flexible working requests a “day one” right, removing the requirement for an employee to have 26 weeks’ service before they can make a request.
The Paternity Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2024 introduce changes to how paternity leave can be taken. These
changes include the ability to take the twoweek paternity leave entitlement as two separate one-week blocks. Additionally, paternity leave can now be taken at any time in the 52 weeks after birth. Only 28 days’ notice to take parental leave is needed, reduced from 15 weeks before the Expected Week of Childbirth.
Carer’s leave
The Carer’s Leave Act 2024 introduces a new right for employees to take unpaid leave to care for a dependent with a long-term care requirement. This is a “day one” right, and requests can be made in consecutive or non-consecutive half days or full days. You may require that notice to take the leave be given in writing, and the notice must be at least twice the amount of leave being requested or, if longer, three days’ notice. You can postpone a request if it will cause serious disruption to your business. Those requesting such leave will be protected from detriment and/or dismissal because they are taking or have applied to take carer’s leave.
All of these changes came into effect on 6 April 2024, and if you haven’t already done so, your policies will need to be updated to reflect these changes. Failing to comply with flexible working and family-friendly legislation can lead to expensive discrimination claims. Thus, it is essential to review your employee handbook regularly to ensure it complies with current employment law.
Key takeaways:
• Review your employee handbook regularly to ensure it complies with current legislation.
• The Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act 2023 and the Flexible Working (Amendment) Regulations 2023 will require significant updates to certain policies in your handbook.
• The Paternity Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2024 introduce changes to the two-week paternity leave entitlement.
• The Carer’s Leave Act 2024 introduces a new right for employees to take unpaid leave to care for a dependent with a long-term care requirement.
• These changes came into effect on 6 April 2024. Failing to comply with flexible working and familyfriendly legislation can lead to expensive discrimination claims.
If you have any questions about how these changes may affect your business or want to speak to experts about reviewing and updating your employee handbook, please email our expert employment solicitors at online.enquiries@la-law.com.

In the complex world of executive recruitment, the search for top-tier talent to fill C-Suite positions remains a formidable challenge.
As Rubicon, a 100% employee-owned business, relaunches one of its prominent sub-brands under the new banner Rubicon Executive, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the dynamics shaping the hiring landscape for UK businesses.
Jessica Comolly-Jones, Rubicon’s Commercial Director, offers insights into the details of executive recruitment, emphasising the multifaceted nature of the process: “Executive recruitment goes beyond mere job placements; it requires a deep understanding of industries, business cultures, and the dynamics of leadership roles,” she remarks.
Employers can often underestimate the significance of cultural alignment, focusing solely on qualifications and experience. Jess notes, “Cultural fit isn’t a tick box; it’s the linchpin of long-lasting and successful leadership.”
A recent REC report revealed that 95% of HR decision-makers admitted their business made at least 1 significant bad hire last year costing the business on average £132,000. As businesses navigate this terrain, it’s important to acknowledge the role of partnerships in driving considered hiring decisions.
The relaunch of Rubicon Executive represents a strategic move to distinguish their executive recruitment services from the broader Rubicon Recruitment ‘portfolio’, differentiating their specialised, high-quality, and unique recruitment solutions.
In Jess’s words, “Rubicon Executive’s mission isn’t just to fill positions; it’s to influence the course of businesses across the UK by identifying and introducing topperforming leaders to enhance their success.

Leading Dorset-headquartered cyber-security company C3IA Solutions has welcomed new legislation aimed at safeguarding consumers from hacking and cyber-attacks on smart devices within the UK.
Any device that connects to the internet, ranging from smart phones and TVs to watches and voice assistants, is now required to meet minimum security standards mandated by law.
Under the new regulations, manufacturers are banned from using easily guessable default passwords, which are exploited by cyber criminals and often available on the internet.
Lucy Dalley, Security Consultant at C3IA, emphasised the significance of the laws. She said: “These regulations are a great first step in protecting consumers and businesses against cyber-attacks because effective security measures will already be implemented before the device is in the hands of the user.
“As an NCSC-assured consultancy, C3IA recognises the importance of supply chain security to protect consumers and suppliers from falling victim to cyber-attacks.
“Cyber criminals still rely on human error as the most successful route in, so by increasing the security within your supply chain, it can help to reduce the risk of exposure to cyber-attack.”

A new location for Diverse Abilities, Short Breaks Service, has opened called The Treehouse, at the former site of Adventure Wonderland, near Bournemouth Airport.
The new facility opened for the first time over the Easter holidays, welcoming 16 children with disabilities to the first play session, enjoying the incredible play barn whilst their families received much needed respite over the school holidays. The following week 55 children attended an Open House session with their parents, for an opportunity to visit the site and enjoy the new facilities.
The charity has received help in the form of grants from Little Lives UK towards the outside go kart and scooter zone, as well as The Morrisons Foundation who has funded the games room. The charity has also been helped by hundreds of volunteers from the local community and businesses based in the local area to transform the site by getting stuck in with painting, decorating, and gardening through 1,500 hours of volunteering.
Mark Powell, CEO at Diverse Abilities, commented: “We are so pleased to have opened for the first sessions at The Treehouse, and to have such great feedback.
“We couldn’t have done this without the support of the local community and many hundreds of volunteer hours put in by the staff of businesses in the area.” www.diverseabilities.org.uk

If a business deregisters for VAT, any EORI number(s) they hold will also be removed at the same time.
EORIs are needed for authorisations, including a UKIMS authorisation, and licences. To continue using these, businesses will need to apply for a new GB EORI number and take the following action:
• Authorisations (including Duty Deferment Accounts and guarantees) – contact the supervising office. These can be found in the original authorisation correspondence
• Licenses – to continue using these please contact the issuing government department
An EORI number is usually confirmed immediately. Once a business has a GB EORI, they will then be able apply for an XI EORI number, if needed and they meet the relevant criteria. The number will be issued within 5 working days of applying. If a business needs help getting a new EORI number, please contact HMRC.
The benefits of joining the UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS) If you move goods into Northern Ireland, you could benefit from joining the UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS).
UKIMS allows trusted traders to declare eligible goods ‘not at risk’. That means you won’t pay EU duty for eligible goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
You’ll only pay UK duty when moving eligible goods into Northern Ireland from a country outside both the UK and the EU. From 30 September 2024, you’ll be able to move goods staying in the UK using a much shorter, simpler declaration containing standard commercial information.
You’ll also have a unique ‘Trader Goods Profile’ populated with goods you move – this means you won’t need to provide a commodity code for each movement of goods.
Businesses sending parcels to another business (B2B movements) between Great Britain and Northern Ireland will follow the same processes as freight from 30 September 2024. To use these processes, either the business sending or receiving the parcel will need to have a UKIMS authorisation.
In May 2024, changes have been made to the Simplified Customs Declaration Process (SCDP) and Simplified Export Declaration Process (SEDP).
These reflect views gathered through a call for evidence held in 2022, that businesses and the wider border industry would appreciate more time to complete declarations and more flexibility in respect of aggregation time frames.
What is changing?
• businesses will have more time to submit declarations
• the duty deferment account (DDA) payment date for all CDS users will be extended from the 15th calendar day to the 16th calendar day of the month
• an option to aggregate supplementary declarations across a calendar month
GOV.UK guidance has been updated, including details of how monthly aggregation can be applied for.
If you have any queries about this change, you can contact the Customs and Trade International helpline on 0300 322 9434, or if you’re a large business please contact your Customer Compliance Manager (CCM) or Customs and International Trade (CIT) tax specialist.

PRIDE month takes place every June and is an opportunity for businesses to become more inclusive of the LGBTQi+ community. Melanie Verano, who is the SEND, Transition and Delivery Coordinator at Bournemouth and Poole College, highlights the huge impact that being more inclusive can have on organisation, its staff, customers and the wider community.
Why should your business celebrate Pride? The answer is simple, Pride is a celebration of inclusivity. It may have all started in Manhattan, New York some 56 years ago, but the movement that followed the Stonewall Riots has continued to reverberate around the world in all its glorious colours.
The LGBTQi+ community has grown to encompass the diverse communities that it serves and is often the umbrella under which those who feel rejected from society shelter.
According to Government statistics 1.5 million of the population aged over 16 identified as LGB+ and welcoming them into your place of work not only takes full advantage of their individual talents but will also boost the opportunity for equality to be recognised by employees.
Workplaces with a strong inclusive structure will attract those from the LGBTQi+ community and with them comes the natural safe feeling that other employees feel, when they see those who are ‘out’ being embraced and accepted. This feeling of acceptance can lead to other benefits such as a more creative thinking and problem solving as well as reduced rates of staff turnover as people feel their wellbeing needs are being met. Those who are happy to share their diversity, be it sexuality or gender identity, will often be strong advocates and this can
Those who are happy to share their diversity, be it sexuality or gender identity, will often be strong advocates and this can help a business to improve processes and procedures.
help a business to improve processes and procedures. This is beneficial to the business and staff, but can spill wider and help to build relationships within the community or business sector. The value of business reputation in today’s marketplace cannot be underestimated and with the LGBTQi+ population growing in numbers and visibility it is easy to see why big brand names have aligned themselves with the ‘Pride Population’.
Colour, creativity and a sense of justice are just the front windows of the LGBTQi+ business. Behind the doors we have a community of employees that will make any business one that is as diverse as it fair. As bold as it is respectful. Employees have only one to prove and that is that they have earned their right to stand shoulder to shoulder with everyone else in their business.
In what is becoming an increasingly uncertain world, the most reassuring step forward we can all make, is one of inclusivity.
