Inaugural business conference explores workplaces of future Businesses in Dorset need to prepare now for the workplace of the future, the first conference of its kind in the county heard. More than 150 people attended the inaugural Future of Business Conference, held by Dorset Chamber at the Hilton Hotel Bournemouth. On stage, five panels of experts discussed a range of topics relevant to growth as the UK emerges from 15 years of economic shocks hindering productivity. Hosted by business journalist broadcaster Declan Curry, and open to the whole business community, the event was part of the four-day Festival. Discussions focused on the workplace of the future, ESG for business growth, town-centre regeneration, AI & technology for the future and skills for future growth. Dorset Chamber’s chief executive, Ian Girling, said afterwards: “This is the first conference of its kind from the chamber and we touched upon some really important issues. We know we must develop our workplaces as

we look to the future, including reducing our carbon footprints, knowing how to incorporate AI responsibly and productively into work tasks and that local employers must do all they can to build dialogue with education providers.” “Feedback on the conference has been superb, with inspired delegates jotting down notes to take back to their own businesses as discussion and action points. “It’s apparent that businesses need to prepare now for the workplace of the future. However, many are already on the case thankfully – and the conference will have initiated boardroom conversations which will power positive change so that businesses are as ready as they can be for tomorrow’s working world.” Digital polls of delegates also provided real-time feedback on workplace issues. In response to one question – underlining the tight labour market in the county – nearly three-quarters of respondents replied that it was “tricky” to recruit the right people for their business. Setting the wider context for businesses was keynote speaker David Smith, economics editor at The Sunday Times since 1989.He illustrated how the UK has been battered by repeated shocks since the global financial crash in 2008-9. These included Brexit, the pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine (resulting in record energy price rises), the cost-of-living crisis driven by stubbornly high inflation, £2.6 trillion of public debt, the highest tax burden since the

Second World War and the highest Bank of England base interest rate in 15 years. David said: “Worker shortages should be starting to ease, as should cost pressures. But plenty of longer-term challenges remain, including transport infrastructure, skills, etc, and the levelling up agenda is not what it was.” Following on, panellists shared insights, aspirations and reflections in response to probing questions by Declan. Panel 1 looked at The Workforce of the Future, with Lord Mark Price, Founder of WorkL, Kevin Barnett, Partner, Lester Aldridge, Karen Parkinson, Head of HR at Keith Spicer, and Councillor Jill Haynes, Portfolio Holder, Dorset Council. DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / PREMIER PARTNER NEWS

Legal matters for International Expansion Expanding your business internationally can be an exciting venture, but it is essential to consider various legal issues to reduce risk and allow focus on growth. Understanding and addressing such issues is crucial for a successful and compliant international business operation. In this article, we will discuss some legal issues which can arise when conducting business across borders. Lester Aldridge is part of MSI Global Alliance, an international association of independent legal and accounting firms. Our membership and the wealth of international contacts we have access to for specialist advice in other jurisdictions give us a unique offering to assist our clients in navigating the complexity of international business. Contracts: Contracts are essential for governing most business activities. These become more complex in international business as the parties may wish different laws and jurisdictions to apply when a dispute arises. Contractual terms under English law may be interpreted differently under foreign legal systems, leading to unexpected consequences. Ensuring contracts will be enforceable in other jurisdictions can also be complex. The parties’ assets may be in other countries, leading to practical and financial issues in enforcement. Often, detailed knowledge of each country’s legal systems and regulatory frameworks is required, as well as an understanding of the potential risks and challenges associated with cross-border enforcement. Employment law: When expanding your business internationally, you should be aware of your country’s labour and employment laws. Each country has its own set of laws governing employment practices, and it is essential to understand these laws to ensure compliance. Some legal issues surrounding staffing include drafting contracts for overseas employees and the laws on wages and other working conditions for employees.

Taxes: Tax regulations vary depending on the country a business is located in. Before expanding your business internationally, you should seek thorough accounting advice. You should examine whether the respective country has a tax treaty with the United Kingdom, and in any event, you should understand the tax consequences of conducting business there. Data protection: Protecting data, particularly personal information, is a complex legal and regulatory issue for companies operating internationally. Transferring personal data outside of the UK or EEA requires a data controller to ensure they have put in place adequate safeguards which are compliant with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Breach of such legislation can result in significant fines for a business; in the most serious scenarios, fines of £17.5 million or 4% of annual global turnover (whichever is greater) can apply. If you conduct business internationally, you can protect your data by staying current on relevant data protection laws and regulations, training your employees on data protection, performing regular data protection assessments and audits, and implementing robust data protection policies and procedures. Intellectual property: Protecting intellectual property rights is essential for international businesses. The legal and regulatory frameworks for intellectual property protection can differ significantly between countries, posing several challenges for companies. If you are expanding overseas, there are several strategies that you can use to protect your IP assets and mitigate the risks associated with global IP protection. One of the most important strategies is registering IP rights in each country where the company operates. Another strategy for protecting IP in foreign markets is to conduct due diligence on potential business partners, licensees, or distributors. This

involves researching the background and reputation of potential partners and assessing their ability to protect IP. MSI Global Alliance: MSI Global Alliance (MSI) is an international association of independent legal and accounting firms and is at the forefront of facilitating international trade and business. With over 250 member firms in over 100 countries, MSI provides a wide range of knowledge and resources to help companies to thrive in the global marketplace. MSI provides services in areas such as auditing, taxation, and business consulting. As an MSI member firm, we can navigate international trade/ business complexities by collaborating with other MSI member firms and providing comprehensive legal services to clients with global operations or interests. With the expertise of MSI member firms, we can manage client relationships, thus giving them a fully comprehensive legal service. For further information on legal issues relating to international business and how our MSI Global Alliance membership can assist you, please do not hesitate to contact our Corporate & Commercial team by emailing online.enquiries@ la-law.com or calling 01202 786188. Walking Football - A different ball game for Care South

President’s Column by Caron Khan

My Last Article As my tenure as President of Dorset Chamber comes to a close, I would like to share my reflections on the journey we’ve undertaken together over the past couple of years. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to serve this vibrant and dynamic business community. During my term, our chamber has accomplished numerous milestones, strengthening our mission to foster economic growth and prosperity in Dorset. We’ve expanded our network, welcoming businesses from all sectors, and connecting members in new and creative ways, and our commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and innovation has been second to none.

Six teams battled it out for glory when AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust hosted their annual walking football tournament at their Ringwood Community Hub. The Trust holds weekly walking football coaching sessions which are sponsored by Care South, a not-for-profit charity and leading provider of high quality residential and care-athome services across the south of England. A partner since 2014, Care South backs a host of club initiatives which provide richer experiences for their residents, creating stimulating and lasting memories through the power of football. Now in its third year, the event saw teams from Care South, AFC Bournemouth under-18s and women’s team and a Community Sports Trust over-50s side compete on a round robin basis. The Cherries second-year scholars emerged triumphant following a closelycontested final against the Community Sports Trust over-50s, while all the games were played in good spirits. Steve Cuss, who heads the Community Sports Trust, said: “Our walking football tournaments are always a lot of fun but are competitive as well. “They are played in a light-hearted manner and everyone enjoys them and plays with a smile on their face which is what our community work is all about.

“Walking football is huge within the community. We’ve got more than 150 players playing every week and have eight sessions a week in the Bournemouth area. Getting people to play and enjoy football is a big part of what we do in the community. “We’ve got a great partnership with Care South, going into their care homes and working with the residents, delivering football sessions and talking all things AFC Bournemouth.” AFC Bournemouth run weekly walking football coaching sessions in partnership with Care South. Walking football is a version of the popular sport, with a few small rule changes. These sessions are offered to both men and women aged 50+ and encourage them to keep fit and healthy without playing an especially competitive or demanding sport. To get involved or find out more, contact steve.cuss@afcb.co.uk. www.afcb.co.uk

I am very proud of our efforts to be the collective voice of Dorset businesses and champion initiatives that enhance our region’s economic and social fabric. It’s been a true joy to work with a dedicated board and outstanding chamber team, whose commitment to our shared vision has been commendable. While my time as President may be coming to an end, my dedication to Dorset Chamber and the Dorset Community remains unwavering. I look forward to continuing to serve and support the chamber in new capacities, knowing that the future is brighter than ever for Dorset.

MSP Capital funds life saving defibrillator in Poole town centre Residents and visitors in the heart of Poole’s old town have been given 24-hour access to a potential lifesaver thanks to communityminded staff at property finance specialist MSP Capital. Members of the firm’s community committee have bought and positioned a defibrillator on the outside wall of their Castle Street headquarters, Strata House, close to Poole Quay. Within 48 hours of the installation, they received a notification that the box had been accessed by a member of the public who also rang the emergency services. Georgina Newman, MSP Receptionist who led on the installation, said: “It goes to show that this will make a huge impact on our local community and the ambulance service. “It means a lot to me and the rest of Team MSP that we have been able to provide this vital piece of kit in the local area which is usually very busy. “It was surprisingly simple to order, install and register the kit. I would encourage as many companies as possible to do this and help give someone in need a better chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.” Paul Miracca, MSP Capital’s Joint Managing Director, also commented: “Installing the

defibrillator is all about giving reassurance to people in our community. “At the same time, by offering staff training we can ensure our team feels empowered to help if another emergency should occur.” The defibrillator is part of MSP Capital’s

ongoing ESG strategy, Foundations for Better Futures, which is run by the community committee and encompasses a commitment to support ‘people, community, industry and environment’. www.mspcapital.co.uk

Dorset-wide project creates greater employment opportunities for young people with disabilities A final showcase event saw the celebration to mark the end of a Dorset-wide project that sought to create greater employment opportunities across the county for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The project, entitled Removing Barriers, was a fully-funded programme initiated by Dorset Careers Hub and Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, with the aim of creating job opportunities for around 20 young people with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The event took place at Merley House in Wimborne, and saw the coming together of all those who had participated in the project, from the 11 local employers, schools and colleges, the wide variety of specialists and advisers and, very importantly, the young people themselves. Rebecca Phillips, Strategic Lead at Dorset Careers Hub said: “This project has opened the eyes of our employers to show them that there is a huge amount of talent out there that is not being utilised. “By being more inclusive and accessible, employers can tap into this capable workforce, creating healthy diversity within their workplace and giving these young people a much-needed chance.” www.dorsetcareershub.co.uk 30

Landmark State of Nature Report shows wildlife’s devastating decline The State of Nature report shows that nature is continuing to decline at an alarming rate across the UK, which is already one of the most naturedepleted countries in the world. The State of Nature report shows that one in six species is now at risk of being lost from Great Britain, with the wildlife studied having, on average, declined by 19% since monitoring began in 1970. Most important habitats are in poor condition, though restoration projects have clear benefits for nature, people and adapting to climate change. Across Dorset, over 400 land and freshwater species recorded in the past are now thought to be extinct, about 1 in 40 species. Extinction is only the tip of the iceberg though – some 2,500 species are still here, but are threatened, rare, scarce, or protected. People’s concern about nature loss, climate change and degraded wild places is a significant voting issue. Dorset Wildlife Trust along with its national federation of 46 Wildlife Trusts across the UK are calling on politicians of all parties to commit to an ambitious programme of policies to support nature’s recovery. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s conservation director, Imogen Davenport said: “Dorset is famous for its wildlife and wild places from the migrating birds in Poole Harbour and our precious marine habitats to the ancient woodland and traditional wildflower meadows at the Kingcombe National Nature Reserve. “These wonderful places and wildlife are under threat from pollution, habitat loss and our changing climate. We urgently need more wilder and more natural areas to help wildlife recover, enable nature to adapt to climate change and create healthier, happier, and more prosperous communities.” www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk

PKF Francis Clark rated one of UK’s Best Workplaces in Consulting & Professional Services PKF Francis Clark has been recognised as a leading employer on a new list of the UK’s Best Workplaces in Consulting & Professional Services, launched by Great Place to Work UK. A focus on wellbeing, professional development and a friendly, supportive culture are among the strengths praised by colleagues at the chartered accountancy firm in an anonymous survey on which the list is based. Amy Taylor, chief people officer at PKF Francis Clark, said: “Our success as a firm depends on recruiting and retaining the best people to deliver outstanding service to our clients, so it’s very pleasing to receive this recognition. “Our place on this prestigious list of the UK’s Best Workplaces in Consulting & Professional Services is driven by the holistic feedback colleagues have shared with Great Place to Work UK about their experiences of working here. Whilst that’s hugely satisfying, we’re always listening to our people and looking at what more we can do to make PKF Francis Clark an even better place to work.” With over 900 members of staff, PKF Francis Clark is highlighted as a top achiever in the large employer category of the Best Workplaces in Consulting & Professional Services list, created using anonymous feedback from employees of firms in a diverse range of knowledge-intensive sectors, from legal services to management consultancy, engineering, marketing and advertising. www.pkf-francisclark.co.uk more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

DRIVEN To EV or not to EV, that is the question? I had the opportunity to explore this very question as Poole Audi (Ocean Automotive) loaned me the new Audi UK Q8 e-tron EV. The challenge was to experience what it’s truly like to live with an electric vehicle. When I picked up the car with a range of 245 miles, I embarked on a week-long journey covering 200 miles. Returning the following Saturday, the range showed 105 miles, thanks in part to regenerative braking. This technology captures energy during braking and deceleration, returning it to the battery for later use. Surprisingly, I didn’t experience the dreaded range anxiety at all during the week. Options on this particular version, included virtual mirrors, park assist, puddle lights, panoramic glass sunroof and enough interior lights that I could start my own Ibiza nightclub!!! In conclusion, owning an EV is not only an environmentally friendly choice, particularly for city driving, but it also offers financial benefits, especially for businesses

and those considering salary sacrifice schemes. For longer journeys, vehicles like the Audi Q8 e-tron, with a range of over 300 miles, still make EVs a viable option. Being an EV driver may require a slight shift in mindset and driving style, but my scepticism was replaced with enthusiasm after this week-long experience. I encourage everyone due for a vehicle upgrade to test drive an EV – you might just discover a pleasant surprise awaits you. The Pros, too many to mention the Cons, I had to hand it back. In the end, the question of “to EV or not to EV” becomes more about “when” rather than “if” as the electric vehicle revolution continues to gather momentum. Paul Taylor, business development manager, Dorset Chamber

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / HEALTH & WELLBEING

Mental health first aid

Create a safe space: Facilitate a non-judgmental environment where your colleague can openly discuss their concerns and emotions without fear.

Active listening: Be a compassionate listener, letting them share their feelings. Avoid giving advice unless they ask for it, as sometimes, a sympathetic ear is all they need.

Respect privacy: Be mindful of a colleague’s boundaries and allow them to decide how much they want to disclose, and to whom.

World Mental Health Day took place last month, and the theme was about mental health being a universal human right. Sadly, some groups face more barriers to good mental health than others. For this article, I approached my fellow Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) at Lester Aldridge for their views on the impact they have had. This is what they had to say: It is a privilege to be an MHFA. Small acts of kindness and knowing how to signpost someone to the right services at the right time make a huge difference. Being an MHFA is an opportunity to make a difference by offering support and guidance to staff when problems arise. Being trained to be more aware of issues and resources has boosted my confidence. I now feel able to help my colleagues when they need it. I trained as an MHFA early in 2019 and have been surprised by the number of people reaching out for support. LA’s support programme and other wellbeing initiatives introduced by LA have contributed to a more inclusive and supportive environment. Be kind to each other and champion your colleagues; we are all fighting our battles. Accessing good mental health support should be easy. Anything we can do to support improved access must be a good thing.

Regular check-ins: Consistently check in on their well-being, reminding them that you care.

Emma Starmer, Senior Employment Law and HR Advisor

Educate yourself: Learn about mental health issues to better understand your colleague’s condition. You may consider training as a mental health first aider.

www.lesteraldridge.co.uk

Mind your language: Avoid using stigmatising or judgmental language and promote a culture of respect.

Work-Life Balance: Encourage a healthy work-life balance, ensuring your colleague takes breaks and prioritises self-care.

Recommend Professional Help: The most important of all - suggest or signpost to professional support - this could be a trained mental health first aider, medical professional, HR or online resources.

Supporting your colleagues In today’s demanding work environment, knowing how to support a colleague when they’re affected by their mental health can have a big impact on their wellbeing. After all, some of us can spend more time with our work colleagues than we do with our families. By fostering understanding and empathy in the workplace, we can all contribute to a healthier and more supportive environment. Here are some ways you can offer support:

International Trade Updates

Mar-Key Group’s first 14m high building in Barcelona for Emirates Team New Zealand

Dorset Brand Builds Global Profile Dorset is home to an array of businesses, of all sectors and sizes, successfully trading across the globe. We spoke to the Mar-Key Group, who has rapidly scaledup its businesses working internationally. As recent finalists in the Global Business Award category of the 2023 Dorset Business Awards, they’ve shared their story… In 1991, David Tabb founded Mar-Key Marquees in Dorset after turning his hand from sail making to marquee manufacturing. Designing his product from scratch, he began to build his own rental fleet which served local events. Their ability to manufacture enabled them to respond quickly, subsequently winning contracts with film producers, the military and large retail clients. Significant growth led to a rebrand in 2007 to Mar-Key Group, and the business continued to invest in their stock and machinery. Through the next 10 years, enquiries continued to build and significant contracts were won including the first international project with the build of a VIP Hospitality Pavilion and Race Team Boat Shed for Ben Ainslie Racing at The America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017. T The overseas delivery of this project turned heads in the industry and positioned the business alongside competitors many times their size. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and c£6m worth of events contracts were cancelled, the work done to establish themselves as a commercial building supplier is what ultimately saved the business. They secured contracts to supply temporary Tesco stores at the Nightingale hospitals, drive-thru testing centres, hospital extensions and PPE storage facilities. When event clients returned, Mar-Key Group found that by 2022 they were double the size of the business that they were pre-pandemic. Speaking of this bounce back, CEO Ben Scroggie commented “Nobody could predict the circumstances we’d all face during COVID, but the work we had put in to developing structures and solutions in the years prior ultimately saved our business. The sheer grit, determination and dedication from our team ensured we would still be trading when the world returned to ‘normal’. International export and overseas project delivery offers huge growth potential to the business. In the last 12 months, Mar-Key Group secured contracts with the South Australian Motor Sport Board worth in excess of £1,000,000, delivered their first 14 meter high building in Barcelona for Emirates Team New Zealand and won a multi-year event contract in Northern Ireland. They’re also experiencing an influx of international enquiries from Europe, and have been approached to quote an overseas project for a major film studio in the UAE worth in excess of £2.8million. Increased understanding of the benefits of temporary structures coupled with Mar-Key Group’s unique capabilities as a British manufacturer, has led to a surge in demand for their temporary structures globally. What we see today in terms of their international presence and contracts secured is merely the tip of a very exciting iceberg offering significant growth potential for this Dorset business. 40
