This is becoming an increasingly important issue and something we encourage all businesses to start thinking about and fits with our Dorset Chamber vision ‘Creating better lives through business’. As investors become increasingly ethically aware, businesses need to increasingly demonstrate their commitment to the principles of ESG. As businesses recruit and effectively market themselves when recruiting, potential employees are placing greater focus on working for a socially responsible business. At a time when the true impact of climate change is becoming clear, businesses need to act responsibly and do all they can to reduce their carbon footprint. Beginning in October, we are working with both BCP and Dorset Councils to offer a range of workshops, free of charge and open to all businesses, that will focus on the practical steps businesses can take to begin their ESG journey. These workshops will cover issues such as governance and ethics and wellbeing of staff, with several sessions focusing on various topics around net zero – beginning with an environmental policy, carbon offset, making our buildings more efficient and electric vehicles and chargers. Watch this space in our newsletter and our website for more information. I’m also very keen to hear from our members and showcase best practice in these areas so if you are taking positive steps in these areas, please do let us know.

Completion in 2023 The cost of developing the Cabot Lane site represents a significant investment by Swiss parent company, maxon, which acquired Parvalux in December 2018.
www.parvalux.com
Achieving a low environmental impact has been at the forefront of the build. In preparation of the site’s subbase, 7,000 tonnes of bricks and concrete were recycled from the site’s existing structures.
Parvalux have been based in Dorset since 1957, with headquarters on Wallisdown Road, Bournemouth, since 1961. In response to record demand for Parvalux drive products and a long-held desire to improve production efficiency and sustainability, it has begun construction of a multi-million-pound headquarters and production facility.
Composite panels were selected for their thermally efficient properties, an important component in insulation and management of internal temperatures. Manufactured in the UK, at facilities powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, the panels feature a hybrid insulation core which is HCFC, CFC and HFC free. Panels were cut to size at the manufacturer to eliminate onsite building waste.
Surplus energy will also be fed into over 50 electric vehicle charging points. These will be available free to staff to encourage the switch to electric vehicles to support CO2 emission reductions.
It is anticipated that the new HQ and production facility will be fully operational by mid-2023, and the overall building design can facilitate modular extensions for up to 160,000m2 that will support decades of future expansion for Parvalux within the Cabot Lane location, which ensures their long-term commitment to the area.
Energy systems A solar energy solution with over 1,500 PV panels is situated on the factory roof. These PV panels result in a 610 kWp photovoltaic supply to provide 607,800 kWh per annum. With the facility expected to use 584,000 kWh per annum, a surplus of over 23,000 kWh will be fed into operational use reducing that drawn from national grid renewable energy suppliers.
The drive to net zero An A+ rating under the UK government’s evaluation system means that a building is considered carbon neutral or net zero. The new building, with its carefully selected materials and energy systems, works in conjunction to achieve -5 A+ rating, meaning it performs five points better than carbon neutral, a rating that Parvalux is proud to be able to show.
Parvalux gears up to achieve net zero CO2 in 2023 with a new HQ and production facility
Doug Sheppard, Parvalux’s managing director, said: “Sustainability is key to what we do as an electric motor manufacturer and our new headquarters have been designed to be carbon neutral with one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) arrays fitted to a single building in the local area and potentially the South of England.
The new building will provide some 86,000m2 of building space on an 8.75-acre brownfield site, previously occupied by Siemens and Barclays. It is anticipated that the new HQ and production facility will be fully operational by mid-2023.
“Our team comprises more than 200 people over three sites. This new facility will bring us together into a single location and facilitate decades of future expansion whilst enabling us to remain at net zero emissions.”
Heating and hot water systems will utilise air source heat pumps that take heat from the air to provide sustainable heating to the facility.
“This system will generate the electricity required to heat and light the whole building.
Building design The building has been designed in conjunction with Parvalux by Lionel Gregory, Poole based designers and architects, and built by Jade Aden, Poole based commercial construction contractors. Both were given the challenge to design a modern, visually stunning, functional plant using energy efficient materials, and to build using sustainable materials as much as possible, with techniques to produce minimal waste. Parvalux selected a final design that included low impact composite panels, energy efficient lighting, and the biggest roof-mounted solar panel array in the area.
Glass panels with efficient heat retention and energy performance are blended into the design giving the building a modern, visually stunning look while creating an impressive working environment for employees. As well as being flooded with natural light, the building will feature energy efficient LED lighting with increased lifetimes compared to older fluorescent lighting to minimise environmental impact.

• Enabling hotdesking and flexible work practices
A successful ESG strategy covers the three main pillars of sustainability: Environment, Social, and Governance. The purpose of an ESG strategy is to demonstrate the environmental, social, and governance factors that your organisation believes to be intrinsically important to consider within your current and future business operations. What does it actually mean in real business operational terms?
• Carbon footprint
more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news 5
Going forwards, companies will be subjected to an increasing set of non-financial reporting requirements, including disclosing their ESG impact.
• Ensuring compliance with legal occupation requirements
Setting an ESG strategy
• Reducing energy consumption by ensuring energy is only used when spaces are occupied
Using IoT technology is a great way to get started with ESG, helping you to collect accurate data and improve your rating.
• Water quality and usage
Importantly, Foresolutions’ IoT platform brings all of this data into a single place so that performance can be traced with accuracy. It is easy to see whether or not a company is hitting its targets, or if steps need to be taken to improve efficiency.
• Is the working environment comfortable for the majority of the workforce?
How can IoT enhance ESG performance?
• Facilitating social distancing by using smart alerts to avoid overcrowding ESG and IoT: why wait? ESG issues are becoming an increasing priority across the world, and regulation is constantly encouraging us all to become more sustainable.
• Energy efficiency
ESG is a global initiative that helps stakeholders understand the impact their business has on the environment, how it benefits society, and how its governance structures ensure transparency about risks and opportunities.
• How accurate is any of the data that you are recording in these areas?
• How much energy is the business consuming?
• Is the energy utilised from renewable sources, or from fossil fuel?
• How quickly can you detect a potential incident?
Real-time occupancy monitoring can also help to improve ESG performance in a variety of ways:
www.foresolutions.co.uk
• How can I demonstrate that my business is proactively reducing its carbon footprint?
Let’s break it down into some areas we can actually review and measure:
In today’s global arena, setting an ESG strategy is seen as an important benchmark for how responsible organisations operate.
How does IoT help with ESG data collection?
Smart electrical sockets are a simple yet innovative piece of tech that have two clear outcomes. Firstly, they indicate whether the power delivered to the socket is from renewable energy sources or fossil fuels, which can influence your decisionmaking on when to use that power source. Secondly, they can cease delivering electricity to devices that are not being used. This is a relatively simple way to lower carbon footprint and reduce costs.
ESG (or Environmental Social Governance to give it its full title) is perhaps a term you’ve not yet come across, or maybe you’re in the early stages of applying better measures to understand exactly how sustainably your business is operating. Whatever stage you’re at in the journey, the fact is, the concept is here to stay, with government initiatives and growing consumer pressure for businesses to lead the way with a more conscientious approach to their operations.
As we’ve mentioned already, IoT not only allows key ESG metrics to be tracked, but can also help to enhance performance across key environmental, social and governance factors.
• Indoor air quality
How well does your business stack up against environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria?
• How good is the air quality on site?
• Is all the energy consumption necessary?
IoT (The Internet of Things) connectivity allows us to monitor and report on things that we couldn’t before. ESG metrics can be measured and collated with precision with IoT sensors, including:
So what is ESG?
Meet ESG and IoT: The partnershipperfect
For example, using IoT sensors to monitor indoor air quality is an easily quantifiable way to optimise occupant health, wellbeing and productivity. Smart alerts can notify you when key air quality parameters deviate from their optimal zone, so that steps can be taken to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
• Waste management

How firms can tackle the rising cost of doing business
We’re all now familiar with the cost of living crisis – how households are struggling to keep up with bills and afford the rapidly rising cost of food, fuel and other essentials.
There’s some good news though – installing a smart meter is a positive step in taking control of business outgoings. Once installed, energy readings will be sent directly to the supplier, bringing an end to estimated bills.
Without good governance, your company is operating on a wing and prayer. With good governance, it is an agile, unified unit on a well-defined path to achieve shared business goals.
‘G’aboutpassionateamtheinESG
The current price inflation is one of many impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, which interrupted supply chains, clogged manufacturing, and created the global delays that are being seen years later.
President’s Column by Caron Khan
While most of the attention seems to be on Environmentaltheand Social pieces of the ESG puzzle, for me good governance — the ‘G’ in ESG — comes before all else. Governance drives company culture and sets performance standards across the organisation. It determines the effectiveness of your day-to-day operations and takes a long-term view to inform effective and consistent decisionGovernancemaking. isessentially the DNA of your company. It impacts everything from company culture and day-to-day business processes to board-level decision making and the overall strategic direction of your company.
www.smartenergygb.org
That means that businesses will only pay for what they use – and some energy suppliers may also offer an in-home display screen, to show exactly how much energy is being used. A handy way to bring an end to shocks at the end of the month. Firms with 10 employees or less could be eligible for a smart meter. You can also contact your energy supplier or broker.
This has been worsened by worldwide issues such as the conflict in Ukraine, and the continuing Covid-19 lockdowns in China, which have also increased prices. Battered businesses now face a stark choice – whether to pass on the increases to their customers, or to try and absorb these new expenses to keep prices down. A positive step for businesses In order to cope with these dramatic cost increases, firms need to get a grip on their expenditure. Unexpected bills are the last thing they need in this current climate – and, in particular, energy bills are a significant worry for a lot of bosses.

Why I
But there’s another crisis, similar to the struggle households are going through, which is dramatically hitting businesses, and that’s the ‘cost of doing business’ crisis. Firms across the country are being confronted by rapidly rising costs of vital raw materials, fuel, wages and, of course, energy. Many businesses simply don’t have either the spare income, or the spare savings, to manage such instant and dramatic increases. What’s caused this?

It simplifies pretty much all of our admin, and our players love it too. It’s been great to work with Bowlr since the very beginning, and we’re excited to see it continue to go from strength to strength.”

Well, it depends. Like most things that become fashionable and grab the headlines, many are keen to explore, learn and invest in this emerging area. Sometimes, what people think they are investing in isn’t quite where their hard-earned savings are going. Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is an investment approach that looks to invest in an ethical way by considering Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) factors and by considering where the investment is going. With a growing social awareness of climate change, there is an expectation that companies treat their employees, suppliers, and communities correctly and, demanding high standards of accountability and transparency from management, investors are now looking beyond purely financial elements when making an investment decision. I think this is a great thing and will be an accelerant to change within the capital markets. However, as attributed to Disraeli, there are “lies, damned lies, and statistics,” so care and detailed research must be taken to ensure an investor’s objectives truly aligns to what is being purchased.Forexample, a well-known FTSE 100 listed company scores highly and is accepted and included in many ethical funds as it has a water reduction policy, environment management team, a committed emission reduction target and designs environmental products. This company also generated £10.5billion of profit in 2021 through its oil production operation. You’ll know this company as BP. I couldn’t ever honestly allocate funds to BP if my headline objective was to be investing in a socially responsible fashion. BP is an excellent example of ‘greenwashing’ where facts, figures and reporting create the impression a company is ‘green’. At O-IM, we exclude companies where the main business is in fossil fuels, gambling, alcohol, tobacco, weapon manufacturing or adult entertainment. Additionally, we restrict investments in companies where there is animal testing for non-healthcare related activity. We design all our investment portfolios with ESG principles in mind but also created three specific SRI portfolios where the objective and purpose of that portfolio can be clearly measured and understood by our clients. SRI does exist and is likely to exist beyond a fashionable trend and those who do it right should also reap the long-term benefits of a more ethical capitalism. Lewis Hamm – CEO and co-founder of O-IM www.o-im.co.uk
As well as working with local clubs, b4b’s software developers were recently commissioned by the sport’s national governing bodies, Bowls England and the EIBA, to create bespoke competitions portals to help streamline administration and improve the player experience. b4b has also worked at county level, developing systems for both the Essex and Sussex County Bowling Associations.

Defibrillators are being installed in a central position in all dealerships and facilities to enable a swift response for anyone in need and the installation process has included training videos for colleagues and posters highlighting where they are positioned. www.hendy.co.uk
Immediate treatment of someone suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest boosts survival rates dramatically. Without immediate assistance, the survival rate is less than 6 per cent but with prompt attention, this can rise to 70 per cent, and the availability of an AED (automated external defibrillator) increases chances of survival.
“Colleague welfare is a huge priority for us at Hendy so anything we can do to protect them in a working environment where they spend a lot of time is important,” said John. “We hope that none of these defibrillators are ever needed but, by having them in our facilities, we know that anyone in need will have the best treatment available immediately.”
The company has invested £36,000 in the defibrillators and Hendy Group property manager John Hendy said the widespread installation across all sites was a sensible precaution for the company to protect everyone who comes into physical contact with the business. The arrival of the defibrillators comes at a time when there are more than 30,000 sudden cardiac arrests in the UK outside hospital every year.

Adapting to hybrid working in 24 hours
www.enhanced.co.uk
It has never been more important for businesses from all sectors to work with an IT support partner who is reliable, efficient, and understanding. The ability to work remotely and securely is just one area that needs careful planning and successful implementation.
2) Have a plan Or at least have a series of objectives that can help motivate you to save by giving you direction, purpose and incentives. Knowing why you’re saving and what you want to use the money for can really help.
Shenton’s Solicitors, based in Winchester, is an excellent example of how, without the support of its IT partner Enhanced, it could not have responded to the requirements to allow it to operate in a different work environment.
Elisabeth Pollard, partner at Shentons Solicitors
3) DiversificationDiversify refers to putting your money in different places or assets rather than saving it all in one place. This becomes especially important when you have money in pensions and investments that are linked to the stock markets. The risks you’re prepared to take should be appropriate to your plans or objectives, and to your own personal attitude to risk.
1) Make it a habit Thinking about the level of savings required for a comfortable retirement can be off-putting. At first, however, it’s the act of saving that really counts, rather than the amount you put away. The key is to put small amounts into a pension and/ or a Cash or Stocks & Shares ISA and let the magic of compounding go to work.
Four ways to get ready for retirement
Enhanced supported all its IT and developed an exceptional understanding of its business. As soon as the government announced that Shentons needed to work from home, it was faced with a major challenge as the majority of its staff were office based. Enhanced stepped in and, within 24 hours, had upgraded Shenton’s IT for hybrid working so its total workforce was up and running and working remotely.
“The partnership we have established and maintained with Enhanced is exceptional. They have supported us for over 20 years and have always been there to guide us in matters of IT. We now have up-to-date systems to help grow our business and their professionalism is outstanding,” said Elisabeth Pollard, partner at Shentons.
Today, however it is now a reality as the workplace is becoming a far more flexible environment. The value of hybrid working is now well established with employees likely to look for another job if their employer doesn’t offer a flexible working model.
Dorset financial expert Peter Harding says, saving for retirement is something we cannot afford to ignore. By following a handful of simple rules, you can make that responsibility work in your favour. Here are four steps to help give your retirement savings a solid foundation.
The swift adjustment to working remotely and securely meant that Shentons could continue to deliver and maintain its service without any detriment to its clients.

• Factual possession – the best example of this is enclosing the land, for example, with fencing to show you have excluded other people

The care Macmillan Caring Locally gave to her and to us got us through the worst time of our lives. The whole team are amazing; they give you the strength and support to get through. They truly are phenomenal, and I could never thank them enough.” Forest Holme Hospice in Poole and Macmillan Caring Locally in Christchurch, who collectively provide palliative and end-of-life care from the Isle of Purbeck in West Dorset right across to Ringwood, decided to partner together and organise a charity abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, as both hospices now form part of University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust following last year’s merger.
Adverse possession applications need to be made to the Land Registry and must show:
Forest Holme Hospice in Poole and Macmillan Caring Locally in Christchurch had a total of 38 people taking part in a Spinnaker Tower abseil which involved a 100-metre descent down the side of Portsmouth’s iconic landmark on one of the hottest days of the year. Many of those participating have a strong connection with the hospices through the care and support their loved-ones received at end-of-life.

When making adverse possession applications, it’s best to provide as much information as possible to evidence ownership. This can include statements of truth, photographs, historic plans and invoices to show how the land has been used over time. Bespoke evidence will need to be tailored to each property on a caseby-case basis. If the land is registered, you need to show that you have been using the land for 10 years. If the land is unregistered, you need to show 12 years.
Adverse possession is a way of claiming ownership of property by the person who has been using it, even though they don’t own the legal title. These types of claims have become more common in recent years and the number of enquiries that we have received on the matter reflects that. In this column, I’ll outline how you can go about making an adverse possession claim.
• You are using the land without the owner’s consent In terms of how long a claim might take, it generally depends on the type of application, the evidence supplied, how long the Land Registry takes to review the application and whether the Land Registry needs to carry out a site inspection. There are no guarantees with adverse possession claims and, ultimately, it will come down to the evidence you can provide. The advice I give my clients is to make the best application you can with as much information as possible once.
Emma Griffen, who took part for Forest Holme dressed up as a penguin in memory of her Dad, said; “My Dad didn’t dance often, but when he did, he’d mimic a penguin. We danced around at my wedding like penguins. We had a ‘thing’ going about penguins, hence dressing up as one to do the Spinnaker Tower abseil. It was an amazing experience, with amazing people for an excellent cause.
“Dad passed away peacefully in the care of the wonderful staff after two days at Forest Holme from complications resulting from a long battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). My family and I will be forever grateful for the love and support offered to Forest Holme.”

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS 34 September 2022 | Dorset Business Focus /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber/company/dorset-chamber/
1. Measure NPS regularly – use transactional and relationship measures in automated feedback tools
So, how can your business improve NPS and stand out in your sector?
Respondents give a rating between 0 (not at all likely) and 10 (extremely likely) and, depending on their response, fall into one of 3 categories to establish an NPS score:
Business decisions without insight can lead to costly diversions or mistakes. Customer data is a critical part of any business strategy. What do you measure and when? In this series of articles, I will be looking at the three main customer metrics that will enable your business to find more customers, retain the ones you have and use them for referral. The three key measures for any business are Customer Satisfaction (CSAT), Customer Effort Score (CES) and Net Promoter Score (NPS). This month we look at NPS and find out where Dorset Chamber sits on the NPS ratings.
what good looks like in terms of NPS. The key with NPS is not to take it in isolation. Benchmarking scores with other businesses in your sector gives you a clear comparison for your industry.
• Passives respond with a score of 7 or 8. They are satisfied with your service but not happy enough to be considered promoters.
Finally we ask all members to look out for the next Dorset Chamber quarterly feedback request including NPS which will be landing in your inbox on 3 October 2022.
An introduction to key customer metrics and Net Promoter Score
3. Leverage your promoters – they are your strongest allies and will shout about your business; a marketers dream!
2. Respond quickly to detractors – when things go wrong, deal with it in the moment
• Promoters respond with a score of 9 or 10 and are typically loyal and enthusiastic customers and would advocate that other people use the company.
If you would like to learn more about NPS and other feedback metrics, please do get in touch with me at richard.knight@insight6.com
For example, consultancy businesses have higher average scores due to the prolonged relationship building whilst medical sectors, such as dentists, have lower average scores due to a negative customer mindset from the outset. Don’t forget, the best business to benchmark against is your own. Gather the insight, set a baseline and measure regularly to track progress.
www.insight6.com
By Richard Knight of Insight6
Firstly, what is NPS? NPS measures customer loyalty and will help you to understand how likely a customer is to recommend your product or service. NPS is one question: ‘On a scale of 0-10 how likely would it be for you to recommend Company X to a friend or colleague?’
Dorset Chamber has been collecting NPS from members and it currently sits at a score of 41. How does this compare I hear you ask?
• Detractors respond with a score of 0 to 6. These are unhappy customers who are unlikely to buy from you again and may even discourage others from buying from you. The final score, from -100 to +100, is then calculated (see fig.1)
When you have collected your data using a feedback system like instant insight, you need to analyse the data. Figure 2 shows
Unfortunately, there is currently no published NPS data for chambers of commerce (Dorset Chamber are leading the field when it comes to seeking the feedback) but data from Survey Monkey indicates that the chamber compares favourably to both B2B and B2C sectors.
Members of Dorset Chamber will have seen the NPS question asked in the quarterly survey sent via ‘instant insight’, the insight6 feedback system. Dorset Chamber is using a ‘relational NPS’ question; this provides a periodic ‘temperature check’ to understand how members feel about the chamber overall. The NPS question can also be ‘transactional’; which gives organisations insight into specific ‘touchpoints’ at a granular level and can provide feedback about a very specific topic. It’s best to use both types to understand your customer at macro and micro levels and gain insight into what may be influencing their behaviour. Comments can then be asked for in subsequent questions to substantiate the scoring from the customer.

STARs continues to be one of the Coop Local Community Fund charities until Saturday 22 October 2022, where 2p in every £1 spent by Co-op members is deposited into an account that is split equally between the Local Community Fund and the Community Partnerships Fund. More than £84million has been raised for over 25,000 causes since 2016. The charity aims to reach its target of £2,500 by the end of the campaign, and urges supporters to select STARs as their chosen charity when they shop at the Co-op.
STARs is the charity’s support and advice service for siblings of children with special education needs. It’s a 12-week programme for children aged eight to 16, meeting on Thursday evenings between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. The charity aims to reduce pressure the siblings are under by providing an environment where they can access support and advice, but also take part in fun activities, make friends, and be themselves.

No, I don’t mean the curly haircut that dominated the 80s; I am, of course, talking in recruitment terms conversationhavingatthroughplacements.permanentaboutcandidateItisdifficulttogetaworkingdaythemomentwithoutatleastoneaboutthe current shortage of available candidates and how hard it is to recruit, and I am sure most of the time people are referring to the unemployed labour market. What is often overlooked is the pool of prospective top talent who are already employed and considering a change. The market potential in passive job seekers is huge, but the reality is, these people are not going to be easily tempted to make a move into temporary or temp-to-perm positions. So, what’s the message? Do not let the fear of recruitment budgets and big placement fees be the reason you cannot find the talent you need. Just remember, your agency supplier should do all the hard work for you; they will write adverts, headhunt, screen candidates and only submit CVs that they deem to match your requirements… easy

This is because everyone should first eliminate, or physically remove, the risk. This is not just the best method of hazard protection, it’s right at the top of the Hierarchy of Controls. Once employers understand PPE’s place in the Hierarchy of Controls, they also need to ensure employees are taking care of their PPE, so that it performs and protects as intended whenever it is used. ‘Take care!’ is a phrase used during hazardous activities. But it also applies to PPE. By law, all PPE must come with instructions, including life-saving information on how to properly combine safety helmets, ear protection, and eye protection. But it also includes key guidance on how to safely store and inspect PPE, as well as the maximum number of times you can wash a hi vis garment before it no longer conforms. This can be as few as 25 washes. At Tower, our passion is helping to ensure your workforce gets home safe and well every day. No one expects you to become an eco-warrior overnight, but if you do want to consider the environment when planning your next event or marketing campaign, then here are a few tips when sending your artwork off to your printer. Paper The global demand for paper is still outstripping the ability for us to manufacture recycled paper, so if you want to feel like you’re doing your ‘bit’, whilst still keeping costs under control, then FSC paper is the best option for you. FSC paper is a global system showing that the paper used came from a sustainable source – forests grown specifically for paper manufacture. For every reem of paper milled, another tree gets planted. Most reputable printers will use FSC paper, but it’s worth asking the question. If you want your customers to know about the FSC credentials of your print run, ask your printer for their FSC marque to add to your artwork.Recycled paper is essentially old paper and ‘postconsumer waste’ that has been mushed up into a pulp and re-made into new paper. But beware, the processes involved in recycling the old paper in the first place will impact on your carbon footprint and your bank balance. And then, a bit like those Kingsmill 50/50 bread eaters, there’s those who have one foot in the ‘green camp’ and the other in their purse. For them, there’s the 70/30 or 50/50 mix – a bit of both.

There is a dichotomy between eco-friendly and sustainable. This is true of roller banners; on the face of it, a roller banner made entirely of cardboard and paper, probably only robust enough to use once may seem like the perfect solution for an eco-conscious company. However, it’s worth evaluating whether a more robust solution with generic artwork that can be used over and over again for years is, in fact, a more sustainable solution. Promo gifts Historically, promotional gifts were made from plastic and quickly discarded. Driven by consumers and Macdonald’s Happy Meal mums, the promo gift industry has had to smarten up its act and now has an enviable ‘green’ and sustainable offering. Ranges include bamboo coasters, pens made from rolled-up paper, metal water bottles, trolley tokens and hand-flags with sticks made from corn! Who knew? A resurgence of ‘lumpy mail’ and post-Covid events has meant the demand for gifts with an eco-twist is at an all-time high. www.theprintagency.com
‘Greener’ printing – pulp facts not pulp fiction
Banners Everyone loves a PVC banner for temporary signage or to promote an event. Many suppliers claim their banners are recyclable, but in fact all they’re offering is a collection service to put into their skip to be carried off to landfill. Poly Vinyl Chloride is the big ‘no-no’ when it comes to environmental and health issues associated with its production, use and end-of-life disposal. Luckily, brand new to the market, there is now a PVC-free and toxin-free material (banner and mesh). In the incinerator or in landfill, this material will not emit any harmful toxins into the atmosphere. Win-win!

Dolphin Centre unveils plans for pioneering co-working space
LGIM is set to launch its pilot location, FOUNDRY Eastbourne, at The Beacon Shopping Centre this summer, with a further 10+ locations planned within the next three years.
Ferndown-based Superior was selected out of more than 500 employers for providing one of the most successful apprenticeship programmes over the past 12 months.
“This unique environment provides an exciting space to do business; ideal for those who don’t want to commute.”
The Dolphin Centre will debut a new way of creative working for Poole Town Centre, helping to invigorate local businesses.
The innovative FOUNDRY co-working space is proposed to open this November, in a joint initiative with centre owners, Legal and General Investment Management Real Assets (LGIM). From individuals to start-ups with global player aspirations, FOUNDRY offers the community a local platform to work, host and grow. Rented by the day, week or month, there are flexible working options available to accommodate businesses of all sizes.
Plans are underway to celebrate the sixties architecture of the Brownsea House building, located on the first and second floors of the centre, by exposing the original design features and merging them with new contemporary elements.
The customer experience and expectation are at the heart of this blueprint and drive the re-modelling and future proofing of the LGIM shopping centres throughout the UK.
The family-owned manufacturer invests early in future and aspiring engineers and scientists by offering valuable work experience placements in the academy, as well as tours for parents, teachers and students. The team also gives presentations during school assemblies, and supports schools with introducing engineering qualifications into their curriculum. Superior apprentices can gain a degree through the academy and have the opportunity to progress into management and leadership roles across the business. www.superiorltd.com Superior celebrated in Top 50

Greg Westover, fund head of Retail and Leisure at Legal & General, said: “As we recover from the challenges of the past few years, it is evident that the entrepreneurial spirit of the Poole business community is very much alive and thriving. A substantial investment into the evolution of the Dolphin Centre, FOUNDRY is our response to the post-pandemic demand for a new hybrid working model.
With access through the centre into a concierge style lobby, members will have exclusive use of the workspace lounge, meeting and bar areas within the serviced office complex.
FOUNDRY is part of the wider ‘Future Retail Blueprint’ launched by Denz Ibrahim, head of Retail and Futuring at LGIM, in 2020. It complements the variety of new initiatives that have launched at the Dolphin Centre over the past two years, as part of the centre’s re-imagining to draw more people to the town centre. The new lineup includes KINGLAND (new shopping district of 10 independent businesses), the Dolphin Street Market, GATHER (a community events hub), an NHS outpatient clinic and an Adult Skills and Learning Centre that is due to open later this year.
“It is our mission to empower the local business community by giving them the space at FOUNDRY to think differently and to upscale growth.”

• Provide early stage waste
The 25-week works on phase 2, and 28 weeks on phase 3 of Studland House, carried out during the contract for Bournemouth University, involved the complete refurbishment of floors one, three and four, plus the local refurbishment of the toilet areas on the ground floor. The new space on the ground floor now provides additional active travel facilities along with new accessible, gender-neutral toilets. The upper floors in phase 3 also benefited from toilet refurbishments on each floor in the core areas; larger, open plan office arrangements with separate meeting rooms; and break-out spaces, store-rooms and kitchenettes. The same theme across all the floors was maintained, but layouts were tailored to the individual department needs.
Criteria to gain the excellent BREEAM rating included: • Register the site with the Considerate Contractors Scheme and scoring 35 points on the review • Record energy and water usage • Record transport for all delivery and collections • Provide a building user guide and training schedules • Source materials from sustainable sources including materials brought to site to be low VOC content • Record all timber delivery including location used and obtain copies of FSC certification from suppliers • Obtain secure by design certificate from local police advisor • Energy monitoring to be fitted to allow post-construction monitoring of all energy use for the building
• Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and minimisation of the environmental impact Studland House, Bournemouth University Greendale Construction Limited achieved a BREEAM rating of excellent for its work at Studland House, Bournemouth University. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master-planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment.
Chris Cave, commercial director at Greendale Construction Ltd, said: “BREEAM completes its assessment through third party certification of an asset’s environmental, social, and economic sustainability performance, using standards developed by BRE (Building Research Establishment). This means BREEAM rated developments are likely to be more sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the people who live and work in them, help protect natural resources and make for more attractive property investments.
• BREEAM certified (the world’s leading sustainability assessment method which includes Home Quality Mark)

“In line with BU’s commitment to environmental sustainability, all our major refurbishments must achieve BREEAM ‘very good’ as a minimum. Thanks to the fantastic effort from BU and Greendale Construction Limited, the Studland House project has now surpassed the BU internal target and Greendale contractual obligations and achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. It is even more impressive considering that the original target has been exceeded by almost 18 per cent.

Marcin Grabowski, programme director, Bournemouth University, said: “Alongside the delivery of a number of landmark new buildings, BU continues its effort to and transform BU estate, recognising the importance of refurbishment, remodelling and optimisation of the existing buildings. Fully refurbished, Studland House will provide a consolidated, high quality central hub for BU’s Professional Services at Lansdowne Campus.
Greendale Construction is delighted to have been announced as a finalist in the South Coast Property Awards 2022. The prestigious award winners will be announced on 29 September at Hilton at the Ageas Bowl. They will be hosted by TV’s Marcus Brigstocke, and promise to be a glittering gala evening of awards to celebrate the best in commercial property in the South Coast region. Sustainable Development of the Year Greendale has been selected as a finalist in the ‘Sustainable Development of the Year’ category, for its work at Studland House phases 2 and 3. This category draws upon outstanding examples of green buildings that are not only good for the environment, but also satisfy occupier demands, and help improve the corporate image. This category highlights the sustainability credentials of a property – whether commercial or residential – from biodiversity to wellbeing, and from energy use to the impact on transportation. Traditionally, organisations have viewed wellbeing as a nice to have rather than a necessity. It wasn’t considered an employer’s responsibility, just something managed by employees. However, in light of the global pandemic, expectations have shifted and organisational leadership has become accountable for proactive wellbeing promotion and interventions.
Many businesses are starting to get to grips with their environmental actions as the impact is relatively easy to measure. Carbon emissions, deforestation, waste management, and water usage are all tangible factors lending themselves to quantitative Governanceassessment.matterscan also be held to account by quantifying executive pay, representation of diverse board members and political and charitable contributions. By comparison, the social component consists of much more qualitative factors, such as data security, customer satisfaction, human rights, and fair labour practices. Because these more amorphous factors are harder to measure, the “S” factor is always prone to falling out of ESG considerations.
ESG investing has gained huge momentum in recent years, with socially responsible investors using its criteria to screen potential investment opportunities. The key features are used when measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment, based on the philosophy that environmental, social and governance components can have an impact on company success and market returns.
Asset managers now have a wide range of strategies to quantify climate change and the same approach could be used to measure employee health and wellbeing such as changes in staff turnover, absenteeism, and productivity. Using these measures, fund managers could highlight companies that prioritise the health and wellbeing of their staff.
The benefits to companies that have a caring culture towards their staff include fewer staff absences and greater productivity, and when staff feel engaged and appreciated, the whole ethos of the organisation exudes positivity. It also helps with staff recruitment and retention, as when people feel valued and there is autonomy within their role, they want to stay in a workplace. This enhances a company’s ability to generate long-term sustainable values as it demonstrates that they prioritise employees, a factor which is becoming even more important in the digital age.
Is health the missing piece in ESG?
However, much more needs to be done, as it is widely acknowledged that health inequalities have been increasing for several decades in the UK. This is exacerbated for those who live in poor quality housing, polluted areas with limited access to healthy food, higher obesity rates and little say over working conditions.
44 September 2022 | Dorset Business Focus /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber/company/dorset-chamber/ DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / HEALTH & WELLBEING
For this reason, it is all the more important to emphasise social factors that are measurable, such as health and wellbeing, but whilst health might be implicitly part of Social, it is not explicitly stated. Therefore, there is an urgent and strong case for attaching an “H” for “Health” and broadening the mandate to ESHG, placing an equal emphasis on ensuring human capital flourishes, as well as financial capital.
The fact is that employee mental health and wellbeing is now shifting up the priority ladder as investors are seeking to ensure they invest in companies who have demonstrated that they are committed to nurturing staff health and wellbeing. Effective corporate initiatives on emotional wellness are now valued by shareholders, as well as other stakeholders, who are recognising how these issues affect personal and professional lives.
Good health is good for business, likewise poor health is poor for business. A clearer commitment to investing in a healthier society should be one of the pandemic’s legacies and therefore it should be enshrined within ESHG.
Investors may consider a number of different ESG metrics when looking to adopt a strategy and these factors typically include industry-specific issues such as carbon footprint, climate change, labour management, corporate governance, privacy and political views, amongst others.
Firstly, if a company has robust health and wellbeing policies in place, it can have a positive impact on financial returns. A study from the London Business School suggests that companies with high levels of wellbeing outperform the stock market by two to three per cent per year and research from Business in the Community shows that FTSE 100 companies demonstrating best practice in employee health and wellbeing show a 61 per cent return rather than the average 51 per cent. According to the US SIF Foundation, assets under management using ESG strategies grew 42 per cent between 2018 and 2022.
Our Health and Wellbeing coordinator, Xanthe Grace explains why she thinks it’s essential that Health is a natural ally to the social element in ESG.
Poor health is increasingly straining public finances and there are inevitable costs for businesses. In the UK, 70 million working days are lost each year due to mental health problems and this number is increasing.

Financial distress. As the Insolvency Service’s recent figures have shown (where the number of company insolvencies in Q2 2022 was 13 per cent higher than in Q1 2022 and 81 per cent higher than in Q2 2021), businesses can move very quickly from underperformance to crisis. 6 key signs of financial distress are:
Insolvency Practitioners help businesses make the decisions needed to avoid insolvency.
Edward01202Edward.OBrien@LA-Law.comO’Brien786148O’BrienisanAssociate in Lester Aldridge’s Employment & HR team.
• High interest payments
• Underperformance. Early signs include a lower-than-expected bank balance and surprising use of an overdraft facility or lower profit margins. These issues can be managed for a short time, however, if, for example, inflation forces up costs, swift and decisive action might be needed to maintain margins longer term.
• Crisis. If financial distress develops into a full-blown crisis, then it is likely that a formal insolvency procedure is required. If parts of a business can be saved, then an administration might be appropriate. Likewise, if a company is able to enter into a formal arrangement to repay some or all of its debts over a fixed time scale, then a Company Voluntary Arrangement is possible. If neither of those two procedures are possible, then liquidation is the only remaining option.
–ESGConsiderationsfor employers
Are we heading for a recession? What must businesses do to prepare?
If a business is already defaulting on an HMRC Time to Pay agreement or cannot pay the wage bill or meet the growing demands of other creditors, it might be difficult for the insolvency practitioner to avoid a formal insolvency process.
Edward
Why should ESG be important to employers?
There are 5.5 million small businesses in the UK It is often the big companies and corporations that take the headlines when it comes to declining sales and profits and job losses during recessionary times. However, as the Federation of Small Businesses
An ESG strategy should be reflected in the employee handbook and company policies to help foster the desired cultural changes. It’s important to regularly review employee handbooks, not only to check that their compliant with current employment legislation, but also to ensure that they remain in line with an employer’s ESG values.
Some of the key things to turn a business around are: getting tighter cost controls in place; implementing more effective credit control; agreeing new payment terms with creditors; stripping out unprofitable product lines and, longer term, working to change a company’s culture and working processes.
www.antonybatty.com
There are three categories of warning signs:
• Increasing stress levels
The pressure on businesses has been rising for several months now, with supply chain issues, rapidly rising inflation and, especially, the shock of soaring energy prices caused by the war in Ukraine. The latest Bank of England forecast on 4 August for a full-blown recession came with a significant rise in interest rates to 1.75%.
• Falling margins
The sooner help and advice is sought from an insolvency practitioner, the more that can be done to turn things around.

• Extended creditor or debtor days
DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news 45
This will put significant pressure on very many businesses, especially SMEs, who are already struggling to recover post-pandemic
Secondly, there is now an expectation from employees that employers go beyond merely having internal policies that comply with legislative and regulatory requirements, with many wanting to work for a company that reflects their own ethics. While ESG does not change employer’s obligations to staff under existing employment law, an increased focus on improving their ESG credentials means that employers are looking at ways of implementing and embedding meaningful cultural change within their organisations in order to attract and retain quality staff. To succeed with their ESG strategy, employers should proactively seek employee buy-in to their ESG initiatives. Employee input should be sought on how ESG can be embedded within an organisation’s culture, and positive recognition for feedback provided to encourage engagement.
• On-going cash flow problems
• Defaulting on bills
For starters, a focus on the “S” (social aspect) of ESG includes matters such as diversity, equity and inclusion, employee wellbeing (with a focus on mental and physical health and flexible working) and employee engagement, all of which will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of staff.
Businesses with lots of debt need to watch interest rates closely. It only takes a relatively small and sustained rise in interest rates for debts to become much harder to service. When underperformance is spotted, tough questions need to be asked and early action taken. Often, the solution is not simple and getting support and advice is better than waiting and hoping for things to get better.
