Welcome to the March edition of Dorset Business Focus. Spring is hopefully just around the corner!
I’d like to say a big thank you to all the businesses that completed our survey on the expected impact of the National Insurance increases that come into effect in April. Over 90% of respondents stated they are concerned about the impact of the increases and businesses report that the increases will have a negative impact on the ability to recruit new staff, make pay rises, on business investment and cash flow and may even lead to reductions in staffing levels. We’ve written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves as well as all Dorset MP’s expressing our grave concerns regarding the impact of these tax increases and the clear need for policies that stimulate and enable business growth.

I’d also like to thank all of the businesses that have engaged with our work experience programme in partnership with the Dorset Careers Hub and Dorset LEP. Work experience is a vital component in helping prepare young people for their future working lives – yet many young people find it difficult to secure a work experience placement and are denied this opportunity. Work experience placements can be very flexible in their structure and don’t need to be the traditional five days. They could be a single day or take the format of a visit to your business; we are happy to help design flexible solutions. I am also really pleased to say that we will be working with the Dorset Careers Hub on a new programme that will help young people in rural areas access work experience opportunities. If you can offer any type of work experience, please do get in touch, you would be providing a great opportunity for a young person.
I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and if there is anything we can do to support you and your business, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
With best wishes
Ian

A strong workplace culture that prioritises inclusion and diversity is essential for fostering innovation, collaboration, and business success. Employees who feel valued and empowered are more engaged and motivated to contribute their best work. But how can employers actively cultivate an environment where diversity and inclusivity are embedded in their organisation?
Understanding Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity encompasses a broad range of characteristics, including race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and neurodiversity.
However, diversity alone is not enoughtrue inclusion ensures that all employees feel welcomed, supported, and able to contribute meaningfully. A workplace can be diverse yet still fail in inclusivity if individuals do not feel they have equal opportunities to thrive.
Building a culture that embraces diversity and inclusion requires a strategic and consistent approach. Here are six key steps employers can take:
1. Leadership Commitment
Inclusive workplaces start from the top. Leaders must champion diversity and inclusion (D&I) and embed these values into the organisation’s core strategy.
• Appointing a D&I officer or champion helps drive initiatives.
• Setting clear D&I goals in performance reviews reinforces commitment.
• Regularly communicating inclusivity efforts strengthens engagement.
2. Fair and Inclusive Recruitment Practices
The hiring process should attract diverse talent while minimising unconscious bias.
• Advertising widely ensures a broad talent pool.
• Blind recruitment (removing personal details from CVs) promotes fair assessments.
• Structured interviews create an equitable process.
• Partnering with organisations that support underrepresented groups expands reach.
• Flexible working options remove barriers for marginalised individuals.
3. Employee Training and Awareness
D&I efforts must be a shared responsibility across the organisation.
• Regular training on unconscious bias and cultural awareness promotes understanding.
• Real-life scenarios reinforce learning.
• Mentorship programmes support career progression for underrepresented employees.
4. Inclusive Workplace Policies
Policies should reflect a commitment to equity and inclusion.
• Ensuring equal pay and fair working arrangements fosters inclusivity.
• Clear reporting mechanisms for discrimination and harassment provide employees with a safe way to raise concerns.
• Regularly reviewing policies ensures they meet evolving workforce needs.
5. Open Communication and Employee Feedback
A culture of inclusivity requires ongoing dialogue and adaptation.
• Encouraging honest conversations fosters transparency.
• Conducting D&I surveys assesses workplace culture.
• Listening sessions give employees a voice in shaping initiatives.
• Celebrating success stories highlights progress and inspires change.
6. Measuring and Reviewing Progress
Sutaining an inclusive culture requires continuous assessment.
• Setting measurable diversity goals tracks progress.
• Analysing employee engagement surveys provides insight.
• Using feedback to refine policies ensures lasting impact.
A workplace can be diverse yet still fail in inclusivity if individuals do not feel they have
Conclusion
Building an inclusive workplace culture is not a one-time initiative—it requires leadership commitment, fair policies, employee engagement, and continuous improvement. By fostering an environment where all employees feel valued and empowered, businesses can drive innovation, attract top talent, and achieve long-term success.
Key Takeaways:
• Leadership sets the tone – Inclusion must be championed from the top.
• Fair hiring practices matter – A diverse workforce starts with unbiased recruitment.
• Education is key – Training fosters awareness and accountability.
• Policies should be inclusive – Equity in pay, opportunities, and support is crucial.
• Employee feedback drives change –Open communication helps shape culture.
• Measuring progress ensures impact –Tracking goals sustains inclusivity. By embedding these principles into everyday business practices, organisations can create a workplace where diversity and inclusion are not just policies but a lived reality.

Results of a major new survey have exposed the depth of distress among businesses in Dorset about the impact of a hike in employer National Insurance.
Some 91 per cent of respondents in the Dorset Chamber poll said that they were concerned about the rise due to take effect in April. Many warned that they will be forced to freeze recruitment and pay rises, cut jobs or halt investment.
From April, employers will have to pay National Insurance (NI) at 15% on salaries above £5,000, instead of 13.8% on salaries above £9,100 currently.
The chamber – Dorset’s leading business support organisation and the county’s voice
A wide range of businesses and employers
– chamber members and non-members
– from different sectors took part in the survey. Businesses responding stated the impact means they will:
• Stop recruitment: 32% of businesses
• Unable to make pay rises: 54%
• Reduce investment: 45%
• See a negative impact on profitability: 71%
• See a negative impact on cash flow: 43%
• May need to reduce staff levels: 42%
of business – has written to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Dorset MPs about the survey results. It has also invited the Chancellor to visit Dorset to speak to those businesses set to be hardest hit by the hike.
Dorset Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said: “In what is already an extremely challenging business climate, these findings reflect very serious concerns around the impact of these increases.
“Many are around sustaining and growing employment, future pay rewards for a workforce that already faces severe cost of living increases, business growth and investment and, ultimately, the survival of many businesses.”
Dorset Chamber, with nearly 700 members representing 37,000 employees, has been campaigning against the rises on behalf of businesses in the county.
Many businesses also left comments in the survey.
IT services provider ITCS, working across the UK with operations in Dorchester, said: “The increase in National Insurance contributions will raise employment costs, forcing many businesses to reduce staff or freeze hiring to manage the financial burden. This is likely to result in higher unemployment, lower consumer spending and a negative impact on economic growth.”

and the surrounding area. It stated: “The recent government Autumn budget, coupled with increase in National Insurance for charities, places an even greater strain on an already overstretched sector.
In the letter Ian writes: “We fully appreciate that public services need to be funded. However, the results highlight a clear need for policies that promote business growth rather than indiscriminate taxation that affects all businesses, regardless of their financial stability.
Ian added: “The NI rises come as businesses also face the prospect of employment law changes as part pf the government’s ongoing tax on jobs and growth. It will have a double-whammy impact which has the potential to severely affect businesses and the local economy.
“As well as the Chancellor, we are very keen to hear from our MPs about this issue and about how they are going to stand up for business in the county going forward.”
It says that the changes to employer NICs are forecast to raise between £23.8 billion and £25.7 billion a year, for the five years 2025/26 to 2029.
Small employers can claim an ‘employment allowance’ which gives them a deduction on NIC contributions below £5,000, provided the NIC they paid or still owe for the previous year was below £100,000.
Regional law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors has expanded with the opening of a new office in Dorchester town centre. It has invested in the county town with the premises in Somerleigh Road, off Princes Street, to meet rising demand in the area.
Dorchester resident Chris Pemberton, is heading the full-service office with a dedicated team of staff. It is 178-strong Ellis Jones’ record eighth office and strengthens its footprint in Dorset, Hampshire and London.
Ellis Jones Managing Partner Nigel Smith, who was born in Dorchester and has strong links with the town, said:
“Chris has been steadily building our client base in the area over the past four years and we believe that now is the perfect time to set up our new office as the logical next step.
“As a law firm, we think it is important to have an office in the heart of the county town, rather than being located on the outskirts of the town, to fill a gap and best serve the people and businesses of Dorchester and the surrounding area.

In today’s competitive business landscape, creating a supportive and growth-oriented environment is crucial for success. With this month’s International Women’s Day shining a light on the role of women in the workplace, I’ve been reflecting on the transformative power of a positive sales culture, especially for women in leadership roles.
As an experienced sales director, I’ve seen first-hand how women in leadership roles often face unique challenges, from navigating gender biases to balancing the demands of work and personal life. These obstacles can be particularly pronounced in sales, where success relies heavily on confidence, assertiveness, and resilience. However, with a positive sales culture and the right training, female leaders can – and are –achieving amazing results.
At Sandler, we’re proud to partner with Dorset Chamber to provide comprehensive sales training programs that empower professionals, build confidence, remove imposter syndrome and drive organisational growth.
A cornerstone of our approach is fostering a mindset of continuous learning and development, equipping people with the tools and strategies needed to excel, not just giving them a ‘how-to’ guide. A combination of interactive, peer workshops, personalised coaching, and access to an online learning portal, ensures professionals can continue honing their skills long after the program concludes.
Positive sales environments prioritise collaboration, open communication, and mutual support. When female leaders feel empowered to share their experiences, challenges, and successes, they create a ripple effect that uplifts the entire organisation. By celebrating diverse perspectives and encouraging mentorship, companies can cultivate an inclusive environment where all team members feel valued and motivated to achieve their best.
The impact of this strong, collaborative sales culture extends far beyond individual performance. Organisations that invest in their people and foster a growth mindset consistently outperform their competitors.

Suttle Stone Quarries have officially opened their quarry extension. Swanworth Quarry, which at capacity was supplying approximately 50% of Dorset’s required crushed limestone to the area, ran out of stone at the end of 2024 having run on limited reserves since 2022.
Now open, this extension area will produce 2.4 million tonnes of Dorset Limestone which will be used in a variety of different sectors; sub-base for highways and construction schemes, rock armour for sea defences, gabion stone and decorative chippings for house builders and domestic customers. To access the extension area a bridge has been built allowing the quarried stone to be brought over to the crusher which is still located in the original quarry. The bridge was officially opened in the middle of January, with a low key ceremony attended by some of the team members that have worked over the last few months to get the extension operational.
Director John Suttle commented: “The Swanworth Quarry extension not only guarantees the supply of aggregates to our loyal customers in the local area, but it also secures jobs for our existing team long into the future, many of whom have been with us for many years. We couldn’t be happier with the opening of the extension area or more excited for the future of Swanworth Quarry!” www.suttles.co.uk
In 2019 the UK government set a target for all businesses to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Understanding and developing the skills needed to meet Net Zero goals is a priority for Dorset’s Local Skills Improvement Plan. Here, Rosie Knapper a Skills Consultant for the Dorset LSIP, shares the findings of a recent survey into business preparedness for Net Zero.
Over the last few months we have completed our annual survey, during which we heard from over 140 Dorset businesses of all sizes. They told us:
Half of businesses have a good understanding of Net Zero targets
Three quarters of businesses have started planning transition to Net Zero.
Most businesses had not measured carbon footprint (63%, no change). Construction and Health and Social Care had.
The survey suggested it was not businesses highest priority and most businesses said that without regulation or incentives their behaviour is unlikely to change.
Do businesses understand their Net Zero skills needs?
A third of businesses felt their staff had the skills / knowledge to meet Net Zero, concerningly there has been no change to that number since our survey of businesses in 2023. Bigger businesses who have employed specialists, or who work in Net Zero understand the skills need well, but
most business leaders couldn’t articulate the skills needed for Net Zero transition.
While few had done specific training, a third of businesses are interested in training, especially if it is funded training.
Net Zero skills courses are available
Free short courses and events to raise awareness and support businesses in Net Zero and ESG planning are available via BCP Council and Dorset Council.
Low Carbon Dorset provides free energy saving advice and grant funding to help local organisations reduce their carbon emissions and save on energy costs.
Local Skills Improvement Fund funded training for skills for green construction and engineering has been made available with Bournemouth and Poole College and Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College. Bournemouth and Poole College is launching its new Green Skills Centre for Building Services in April 2025.

The charity began in 1955 when local lady, Phyllis Edwards, reached out to other parents through a letter in the Bournemouth Echo.
To celebrate, the charity wants to reach out to anyone who has been involved in the charity through the years including people who have been supported by the charity, families,
employees or those who have fundraised or volunteered.
Francesca Potton, community fundraiser at Diverse Abilities commented: “We are really looking forward to hearing memories from the local community. 70 years is a long time, especially for a local charity, and we are so grateful to everyone who has been involved and we know there must be some great stories to tell.”

looking to include Net Zero in a wide range of programmes. Sustainability training has been delivered to over 100 FE tutors and education staff so this knowledge and skills can be embedded into all courses helping to upskill all on Net Zero knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Financially prepared for change?
The number of businesses who feel financially prepared to lower their carbon footprint has increased to 50%, but in general, smaller businesses tend to feel less prepared.
To view the full findings from the report or see support available for organisations visit the Dorset Chamber website. Scan the QR Code or visit: Race to Net Zero - Dorset Chamber. What is the LSIP? The core purpose of the LSIP is to respond to employer skills needs, ensuring that employer’s experience and feedback drives local skills and training delivery. It is part of a national network of LSIP’s putting employers in the driving seat of government skills funding.

Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has raised an incredible £1210 for local charity, Gabriel’s Journey. Voted for by Greendale employees, Gabriel’s Journey raises funds for 15-year old Gabriel from Bridport; a twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome survivor, born at 33+4 weeks’ gestation along with his identical twin brother Isaac;
sadly, stillborn. After his birth, Gabriel was resuscitated for 28 minutes by healthcare professionals; he had a neonatal intracranial haemorrhage, spent 4 days on a ventilator, required a blood transfusion and antibiotics. Gabriel is diagnosed with four limb cerebral palsy, epilepsy, global developmental delay, and is nonverbal.
Gabriel has also been diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome; a rare and unfortunately drug-resistant form of epilepsy. Although very unwell at times, courageous Gabriel continues to battle on with fierce determination and a winning smile on his face. The money raised by Greendale’s employees at the company’s annual Christmas party, with raffle prizes kindly donated by the firm and its supply chain, will go towards providing Gabriel with home adaptations, equipment, and therapies, unavailable through the NHS or social care services, as well as adapted toys and holidays.
Rosa Donovan, Gabriel’s carer, commented: “Gabriel is the strongest person I know. The challenges he’s faced throughout his life so far have been very traumatic for him, but he always gives a good fight, and every day he has a huge zest for life, showing his disabilities won’t hold him back. Making memories with Gabe is so important as the complexities of his disabilities can take a turn at any given time, and we all want to give him the best life we can. We are extremely grateful for the team at Greendale Construction for sponsoring Gabe as this will make a huge positive difference to him living his life.”

When it all comes together…
Nicola Newman, Project Lead for the Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan reviews the recent People Festival held at the Vitality Stadium on 13 February, a focal point of the Dorset LSIP change programme.
The employer-led Dorset Skills People Festival, hosted by Dorset Chamber in February, lived up to all hopes and expectations - plus plus. Funded by the UK Government’s Local Skills Improvement Plan programme, it was a key deliverable of the current action plan.
The Chamber team has been working since 2022 to increase understanding of the specific skills needs of Dorset employers so government-funded training providers can fine tune their T Levels, apprenticeships, Higher Technical Qualifications, Skills Bootcamps and other funded training to meet these needs. The top-level actions have been to increase capacity, capability, collaboration and communication in the local skills and workforce development system. All of these aims were showcased at the event.
Speakers focused on the key skills needs regularly highlighted by employers. Jo Mills from Nationwide talked about the 20 essential digital skills identified by Future. Now
needed in the current workforce, and how to achieve them in any size of business. Kate Jones from Ellis Jones solicitors shared how they develop leadership and management skills. Jules Benton held a packed session on mentoring and retaining new starters. Ellie Parson of NHS Dorset shared how they have adapted their recruitment practices to meet local needs. Richard Hale of Inspiring Heritage highlighted the power of neurodiverse employees, when playing to their strengths. These are just a few of the 24 speakers on the day, all employers sharing their own experiences of best practice that works. Other topics included remote work experience, working with young people, a panel on employment law changes, and partnering with DWP and colleges to expand the workforce.
A panel representing employees of all ages shared the changing expectations of the people we employ – from those starting their careers to those reaching retirement. Their need for a purpose, clear aligned values, flexibility and support – and a two way dialogue with employers – was a clear validation of the need for businesses to build a strong and positive workplace culture, if

retention is a priority.
At the Expo, 54 exhibitors from our local colleges, universities and independent training providers as well as employment lawyers, HR service providers and recruiters were on hand to provide expert advice to the employer audience.
Held at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium, the backdrop of this Premier League venue provided an inspirational wow factor for all attendees – matching the ambition of the Dorset skills system. Alongside the festival, the Dorset Careers Hub hosted a very early breakfast meeting for senior leaders in schools who then joined the main event as employers themselves, as well as educators. This was a great opportunity to cement ties between schools and future employers.
Nicola Newman. LSIP Project Lead said: “The positive feedback from all the attendees has been exceptional. The decision to have a face-to-face event was a good one it seems. People need to meet in person too, but time is precious we know so we worked hard to make the content specific, fast paced, and relevant to galvanize skills development activity in all sectors. Many new commitments were made and relationships formed. It worked.”
Fantastic day full of great content and valuable insights from the Dorset employer community, thank you Dorset Chamber and Dorset Skills.

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity is fundraising £1.5m to enhance the BEACH Building with various additional items – above and beyond NHS funding – that will ensure the facility has everything it needs to take the local community’s health care into the future. www.uhdcharity.org
Polyhose UK, an energy conveyance products wholesaler in Christchurch, welcomed Dorset Chamber Chief Executive Ian Girling to the official opening of their new warehouse. Polyhose worked with fellow Dorset Chamber member Mar-Key Group to install their new storage facility.
With ambitious growth plans for 2025 and beyond, Polyhose needed to create additional warehousing space to accommodate a broader range of products and increase the depth of its UK stock holding. A temporary structure offered the fast, flexible and cost-effective solution they required.
Marc Whibley, Managing Director at Polyhose UK, was delighted to find a suitable supplier on the doorstep. “Once the groundworks were complete, Mar-Key Group finished the structure in just a few weeks. It was incredible to see how much progress they made so quickly and to see our vision for the new building come to life.”
Charlie Watson, Business Development Manager at Mar-Key Group, added, “It has been fantastic to work on this build with Polyhose and collaborate with a fellow Dorset Chamber member. The installation is around the corner from our manufacturing facility, and it was great to watch the team turn an empty land into usable space. I know the additional warehousing will make a real difference to Polyhose, and I wish them every success in growing their business.”

By Ben Clark | English Ford, Poole’s Take on Ford’s Newest Offering
The new, all-electric Ford Capri is here, and let’s be honest; it’s about as far removed from its 70s namesake as you can get. Gone is the low-slung body and manual gearbox. In its place? A sophisticated, high-tech electric SUV with up to 389 miles of range. But before you let nostalgia cloud your vision, hear me out. The 2025 Ford Capri isn’t trying to live in the shadow of its predecessor. It’s leading a charge into the future, and it’s doing so rather brilliantly. This Capri wears its SUV proportions with purpose. The sleek Vivid Yellow or Blue My Mind paint options tie it back to its bold heritage, while aerodynamic lines and modern LED signature lighting plant it firmly in the 21st century. There’s a subtle nod to the past in its rear curved window and grille design, but its purpose is clear: this is a car that embraces now. Step inside, and you’re greeted by a futuristic cabin. The MegaConsole offers ample space for a laptop or handbag, while the My Private Locker hides neatly behind the SyncMove screen. The screen
itself is responsive and rivals luxury EVs in functionality. The 572 litres of boot space make it ideal for family trips or a shopping spree; practicality is the real standout.
With a range of up to 389 miles, the Capri is built for adventure. Long-distance cruising feels effortless, and a growing charging network means range anxiety isn’t an issue. Acceleration is smooth and satisfying, making it a practical yet exciting option for the modern driver.
This isn’t a throwback to the 70s. Instead, it’s a modern SUV designed for today’s needs:
efficiency, sustainability, and versatility. It may not have the tyre-squealing antics of the original RWD Capri, but it’s practical, stylish, and built for real-world use.
Ford hasn’t recreated the past; they’ve crafted a vehicle for the future. The New Ford Capri is relevant, capable, and practical. Next time you’re in Poole, take a visit to English Ford (Foray Motor Group) at Tower Park for a closer look. Nostalgia might bring you in, but the electric brilliance will convince you to stay. www.foraymotorgroup.co.uk
Due to the Government’s DEFRA enforcement of the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, Farmer Palmer’s can no longer allow public access to its deer or offer the deer safari experience unless the entire farm park transitions into a zoo. This is because red deer are classified as wild animals. In today’s challenging climate of rising hospitality costs and increasing legislative demands, this is not a viable option for the farm.
Farmer Palmer’s is making plans to responsibly rehome its red deer, ensuring they continue to receive the best possible care. The farm’s commitment to animal welfare remains at the heart of everything it does.
Farmer Palmer’s owners, Sandra Palmer-Snellin and Phillip Palmer, commented:
“This is a significant blow to our farm park. The decision to stop allowing customers to view the deer has been incredibly difficult for us. We, along with our team, are saddened to bid farewell to our red deer, who have been an integral part of our farm park.”
The team remains committed to adapting with resilience and determination, looking forward to introducing new experiences in the year ahead. These will complement the full day of handson animal encounters, play areas, tractor rides, and educational activities that Farmer Palmer’s continues to offer.

The foreword to the government’s draft industrial strategy announces that “It will be international from the start It identifies growth-driving sectors in advanced manufacturing and clean energy, through to financial services and life sciences, driven by strengths from innovation and entrepreneurialism, to regulatory and financial performance
It identifies growth-driving sectors in advanced manufacturing and clean energy, through to financial services and life sciences, driven by strengths from innovation and entrepreneurialism, to regulatory and financial performance.
But how can UK companies prepare to take advantage of this renewed international approach in what have become such uncertain times? Dorset Chamber spoke to experts at International Trade Matters on how to capitalise on the current climate.
The current global economic climate may appear on the surface to be an intimidatingly complex conundrum, but therein lies opportunity, and with access to a few powerful tools, your business can set out its own clear, concise and well-prepared strategy for growth through international trade.
How do I go about developing an international strategy?
The first steps to effectively improve existing trade or establish new market opportunities can be surprisingly elementary. Some of the most impactful workshop sessions we provide are centred around identifying current strengths and capabilities. Using a variety of techniques, exercises and models, it quickly becomes possible to map a detailed understanding of where you are and where you need to be.
What next?
Setting your destination and deliverables to be driven by leadership and a clear direction. Companies that are able to articulate their goals and strategy, internally and externally, are set up to succeed. By setting the compass, drawing a roadmap, and determining the required messaging, you can make sure the whole team is on board. You’re going to need them!
Investment in capability and capacity. Systems, people, supply chains, and facilities can form a complex web of defining factors in the viability of international strategy. A few small changes can have a significant
impact, smart sourcing can help to quickly increase capacity and process innovation can deliver efficiency gains. The most important lessons here are in maintaining a flexible and scalable approach by keeping an eye on hot spots and pressure points, forecasting well and communicating regularly.
Invest in skills for compliance. Whether your international strategy relies on importing, exporting, or both, having skills embedded within your own business is vital to achieving good, compliant trade and could deliver substantial financial benefits. On top of this, navigating HS codes, Incoterms® rules, documentation and constantly evolving trade agreements requires dedication and application. International Trade Matters is always on-hand to offer professional advice when needed!
Where can I learn more?
Your local chamber of commerce is a great resource for all aspects of international trade. The British Chambers of Commerce accredited training courses run regularly, alongside topical webinars and information
updates. International Trade Matters provides a wealth of complementary services and packages to give your global growth strategy a powerful boost:
International Intent - Establish a reliable international strategy to grow revenue, offset risk and enhance brand, bring your products to a wider audience and benefit from international supply chain relationships.
Global Trade Blueprint - Explore and unlock potential within your organisation using a detailed, visual tool to establish current and future state, leadership signatures, pathways and opportunities.
Tailored courses - Assemble a great value training package that embeds the skills you need in a time-frame that suits you.
On-demand support - Your very own, embedded International Trade Manager or retained advisory service – at a level that suits your business. One day a month or several days a week!
