Extravaganza! Another year has flown by and we’re ready for another Christmas event. we’re hoping the weather will hold out for us, like last year

T

his year the popular, brightly coloured Gugge 2000 band will be headlining the event. Other guest performers will entertain you from around midday (see full programme on page 7). We also see the return of Townsends Amusements with traditional rides and games for all the kids to enjoy, as well as hot chestnuts, hot dogs, candy floss and sweets! Father Christmas will be in his Grotto in the Barrington at various times in the afternoon, and later in Penny’s Walk for lights on. Mince pies and mulled wine can be found on the Chamber stand where you can also pick up raffle tickets for your chance to win the big hamper!

Ferndown Chamber has seen some major steps forward this year, including the affiliation with Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). This really puts us back on the map from a business point of view and more importantly brings many benefits to members. We’re certain this is the beginning of bigger and better things to come. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Chamber committee for all their hard work and continued support throughout another year; you’re a fun crowd to work with! So, wrap up warm everyone and come and enjoy the festivities. Have fun!

WISHING YOU a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year... all the very best! Christmas in Ferndown 2015 3

Jenny Oag My Name Is Jenny - I have been Singing ever since I can remember AND have always had a passion for Music. I love how a story can be told through a song and that each song you hear can have a special Memory. I like to find different versions of songs to make them my own. However when asked to sing a certain song, I know the original is the one that everyone loves. I have the ability to change it and make it unique and personal especially for you. I’m fortunate enough to have been granted funding from the Princes Trust, who helped me turn my dream into a reality.

Over the years, I have been lucky to attend workshops with some amazing people in the music industry such as Mark De Lisser, from BBC’s The Voice, who has trained the likes of Jessie J, Joss Stone and Beverley Knight. I’ve also attended a workshop with actress Julie Atherton from the West End and Broadway, who has had main roles in Mamma Mia, Avenue Q and Sister Act.

Evelyn Walsh Evelyn has been inspired by the 60S and soul music from an early age and her soulful voice generates the sounds and entertainment from this era. Her repertoire ranges from Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Martha Reeves, Sandy Shaw, Diana Ross and The Supremes amongst many other popular artists of this time. In addition to soul and R&B music from the 60s, Evelyn also performs a wide range of contemporary music: artists such as Duffy, Natalie Umbruglia, Katy Tunstall, Alanis Morrisette, to name a few.

A multi talented performer, Evelyn also has wide experience within the theatre, adding to her performance technique. Evelyn has performed in musicals My Fair Lady, Oliver and Les Miserables. Performances include a wide range of material suitable for all ages ranging from children to adults.

An experienced entertainer, performing at various functions and venues such as weddings, birthday parties, 60s themed evenings, pubs and clubs, Evelyn has a degree in drama studies, and is also currently studying for her MA in devised performance.

Gugge 2000

performing

at 4.15pm

We are GUGGE 2000 (but we started in 1998!) and we are the first Guggenmusik band in the UK. If you are wondering how to pronounce our name, it’s googie as in boogie! If you know us better as ‘the black & yellow band’ or ‘the bumblebee band’, ‘the wasp band’ etc, that’s cool too!

What is Guggenmusik? Guggenmusik translates as ‘happy music’ and certainly seems to bring the best out of those who perform it and those who are entertained by it. The bands are generally about 40 strong and combine large percussion sections of bass drums, and trolley mounted kit drums, with even larger brass sections of trumpets, trombones, euphoniums and sousaphones. The music they play is mostly popular music (chart hits etc) but the performance is as much about visual impact as it is about the sound. The first thing that catches the eye is the colourful costumes influenced by the traditions of carnival, often with masks and a political or topical

theme. Originally associated with winter carnivals, as Guggenmusik has evolved, it has taken on its own life and has become a focal point of carnivals with bands taking centre stage and performing well-polished ‘concerts’ for their audiences. Guggenmusik bands of today give concerts that are not far removed from rock concerts, with all the passion, enthusiasm, and spectacle that goes with them, not to mention their own fans that follow them around.
