had a great time at a party in Bournemouth, and was able to see in the new year with some of my closest friends.

I love New Year’s Eve - it’s the best time to say ‘out with the old, in with the new’, and make a fresh start on the resolutions (we always seem to make). This year, I’ll keep my resolutions to myself – that way no-one can criticise me if, (or when) I break them.

Easing High Street traffic Two new committees formed by Fordingbridge Town Council at the end of last year to push forward plans to cut traffic congestion, will become active this month.

The Fordingbridge Mayor, Cllr Malcolm Connolly says, “It’s time to find a long term solution to the problem of congestion and bring safety back to the streets.”

Members have been enrolled including Fordingbridge Society who will participate in the both the General Transport Committee and the Disability Committee.

On its website, the society echoes the town council’s concerns about the New Forest District Council’s local plan which, if approved, will allow development of the land on the eastern side of Whitsbury Road to provide up to 100 new homes. The local plan also states that land at Sandleheath Industrial Estate is already allocated

The extra traffic, including articulated lorries, can only access these sites by driving through Fordingbridge High Street.

“Our roads just can’t take any more traffic,” said the mayor.

“They were built for horses. When a lorry parks on the High Street it causes all sorts of problems.”

He added, “I hope by forming

New Forest District Council confirms the local plan is ‘at examination,’ and if found sound, will be adopted. Local people will still be able to object to planning applications for the land earmarked for housing, but it is limited what can be done about Sandleheath Industrial Estate, which has existing planning permission on it.

Team members must drink a pint (beer or fruit based), with no spillage, at each four pubs along the route: the Old Thatch, Pure Drop, Night Jar and White Heather.

All team members must be 18 or over on the day, including the ‘baby’ who has to remain in the pram throughout the race. The pram should be based on a pram design with two axels and four

wheels – no form of propulsion other than pushing is allowed.

The XXX trophy will be awarded to the fastest team, and there will be awards for the best dressed teams and best engineered pram.

In celebration of ten years in business, mags4dorset is launching a brand new website.

Three Verwood people have become the first Freemen of Verwood following public nominations. The Mayor of Verwood, Councillor Simon Gibson was delighted to acknowledge their outstanding efforts and said, “I was very keen during my term of office to recognise the volunteers who tirelessly work in the community for the benefit of others.”

Ferndown’s outstanding resident A local community hero from Ferndown, John Hanrahan, manager of the Heatherlands Centre was awarded a certificate for being an “Outstanding Resident 2012” by Synergy Housing Association at a Christmas Dinner held in Wool nr Bovington.

He was congratulated for the many community events, activities and courses he has organised and run at the Heatherlands Centre in Ferndown for local people.

John said, “What a lovely surprise to get just before Christmas and I would like to say thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

John is well known for running the very successful and popular Ferndown Ju-Jitsu Club on the Heatherlands, which has been in existence for almost 13 years.

Design director, Ben Pulford, says, “Although our existing website is really popular, we wanted to give it a complete makeover. There have been many advances in online media and the interaction between websites since we first launched www. mags4dorset.co.uk. It now has a fresh, new feel with additional functions like a photographic gallery and is more of an interactive experience for our online readers.”

Unfortunately more and more customers seem to be more interested in price rather than service and aftercare, you would be surprised how many

retailer established in Verwood for over 50 years people we see who wish they had purchased locally once a problem occurs. It becomes frustrating when customers use retailers as a showroom and information centre and have no intention of buying from them. If this trend continues at its current rate, customers will have nowhere to look, touch and find out about products. Here at Baileys we try to explain to customers the benefits of dealing with us and in most cases we can certainly get very close to online prices so it’s a win win situation for customers.

With most retailers having online sales available 24/7, is that something you will be launching in the future?

Because we are part of the Euronics buying group, customers can visit the Euronics website, search for Baileys under the store finder and order online 24/7, the prices are very competitive; the range of brands and products huge.

What do you think it is that makes you stand out from the crowd, your unique selling points?

We are very proud of our customer service, we are honest (Trading Standards approved) and go that extra mile, we have a smart showroom with friendly knowledgeable staff who are not biased towards any particular brand. We have direct face-to-face contact with manufacturers which allows us to resolve issues quickly if required.

raises £6,000 Annie Dougall, from West Moors has been praised after tackling one of the world’s toughest physical challenges. The billing manager with Sembcorp Bournemouth Water raised the money by completing the gruelling Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon in South Africa. Annie raised £3,000 with SBW adding a further £3,000. The money has been divided equally between the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) and WaterAid.

Portable antiquities The next speaker at the Fordingbridge Historical Society is the Finds Liaison Officer Hampshire on the subject of the Portable Antiquities Scheme. This is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public. The talk will take place on 11 February in St Mary’s Church Hall, Fordingbridge at 2.30pm. tudents from the Glenmoor and Winton Federated Trust will take part in a pioneering project set up in the memory of Red Arrows’ pilot Jon Egging who died in August 2011 when his jet crashed at the end of a Red Arrows display in Bournemouth.

Twelve children aged between 13 and 14 are embarking on the Blue Skies programme between March and June 2013 involving the Jon Egging Trust and personnel from MOD Boscombe Down.

Jon’s wife, Dr Emma Egging, set up the trust and is leading the Blue Skies project. She said, “I am really excited to be working with MOD Boscombe Down and young people from Bournemouth. The Empire Test Pilots’ School and the pilots who are trained through it are hugely inspiring and I am confident that the young people will gain a great

deal from having two of these pilots mentor them through the programme of teamwork training opportunities.”

One of the test pilots who will guide the youngsters is Flight Lieutenant Andy Edgell.

He said “Jon’s selfless attitude and boundless enthusiasm to better the lives of others was an inspiration to all. It is an absolute pleasure to be involved with the Jon Egging Trust and I am certain that the young persons and the team

at Boscombe Down will both find the experience hugely rewarding and enjoyable, I look forward to embarking on the journey in the spring of 2013.”

The Bournemouth affiliation follows a highly successful pilot scheme which took place in Lincolnshire in 2012.

The Jon Egging Trust Blue Skies programmes will also be running in Norfolk and Lincolnshire in 2013 and will continue to expand nationwide in 2014.

New play area for Woodlands

MP backs plain packs for cigarettes Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, has called on the UK Government to follow the lead of their Australian counterparts and introduce plain, standardised cigarette packaging in the UK. Since 1 December 2012, cigarettes in Australia have to be sold in dark olive brown packets which are mostly covered in health warnings. Health charities in the UK, including the British Heart Foundation, want the UK government here to introduce similar legislation.

“Cigarette packaging is one of the last forms of

marketing that tobacco companies can still use to attract new customers.

Australia is leading the way in stopping people from becoming addicted to a lethal and harmful product,” says Annette.

“If we care about the health of people in our community then we should introduce plain, standardised packs in the UK and help stop the next generation of smokers being recruited.”

hildren in Woodlands near Verwood now have a better place to play, following the opening of a newly-refurbished state-of-the-art play area in New Road. The facility includes an aerial runway, basketball and football provision, a Viking climber and slides, and a group swing.

Cllr Lucy Clark, Chairman of East Dorset Council, who officially opened the park, said, “I’m delighted to be invited

to the grand opening of the newlyrefurbished play area and, judging by the improvements that have been made, it really does look grand. All of you who have worked for so long and so hard must be very proud of the results of your efforts.”

Finance for the play area has come from East Dorset District Council, Knowlton Parish Council, Synergy Housing’s Zone 10 Panel, East Dorset Community Fund and Dorset Community Foundation.

A Christmas Candle - floral competition winner

Ringwood Floral Decoration Society held their Christmas lunch at Greyfriars, prepared, cooked and served by the committee.

Mrs Gillian Habbin entertained members with a demonstration after the meal, and chose the winning arrangement in the club competition.

The title was ‘A Christmas Candle’ and the winner was Linda Fleming.

The Society’s next meeting is on Thursday, 31 January 2013 which will be the AGM. New members and visitors are welcome to join at Greyfriars Hall, Ringwood at 2.15pm. For further details call Jenny Davies on 01425 474391.

Moyles Court celebrates ISI report

M

ain findings of an Independent Schools Inspection at Moyles Court School last November have revealed that ‘the overall achievements of the pupils throughout the school, including the EYFS, (Early Years Foundation Stage) are good. They are underpinned by a broad curriculum, a wide choice of extracurricular activities and good teaching. As a result, the school is successful in realising its aim to maximise the potential of pupils of all academic abilities, to make the most of their talents.

Good levels of knowledge, understanding and skill are demonstrated by pupils across all ages, subjects and activities. The above average results achieved in public examinations show that pupils make good progress for their ability.

Pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language) and pupils with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) often make rapid progress, due to the excellent support they receive.

Most pupils have positive attitudes to learning, encouraged by the good teaching.

Teachers demonstrate strong subject knowledge, clear objectives and high expectations, though in a few lessons observed, the pace was pedestrian and there were too few opportunities for pupils to learn independently.

The inspectors praised the school for fulfilling the recommendations of the previous inspection and stated, ‘Excellent relationships exist between all members of the school and the community. Good understanding and respect for individual differences create a harmonious atmosphere and engender a strong community spirit.’

The report also stated that the quality of pupils’ achievements and learning is good. Contribution of curricular and extracurricular provision is good as is the quality of teaching throughout the school. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils is also good along with the pastoral care. The

quality of boarding is good overall.

Greg Meakin, the headmaster, said, “I thank everyone who has worked so hard and effectively since the last inspection (November 2009) in contribution to this very positive report. As you will read, the strengths of the school have been identified clearly with notable progress having been made since 2009. I am especially pleased with the comments on boarding outcomes, pastoral care, the high quality of teaching and learning, strong learning support outcomes, good value added throughout, progress in staffing since 2009, the strengths in extracurricular activities and success in stretching the more able pupils.

“The recommendations in this report point the way for moving the school towards excellence in all areas. I look forward to working with staff, governors and parents accordingly over the coming years, with ‘excellence’ as the clear and firm aim.”

A green roof, solar panels and straw bale walls are just some of the eco-friendly features being incorporated in the new Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre, which is currently being constructed. Part of the work involves the creation of an extension to the existing Barn Cottage.

The British Wildlife Photography Awards (BWPA) exhibition opens at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 2 February – with three of the 12 category winning shots taken by local photographers.

And for the first time, the overall winner and holder of the title British Wildlife Photographer 2012, is a local photographer, Dr Matt Doggett.

Matt’s image, ‘Gannet Jacuzzi’ won the Coast and Marine category before going on to take the overall title. Captured on a remote location off the north coast of Scotland, the image shows both the raw power and the grace of gannets as they dive, highlighting their amazing underwater abilities. The Southampton-based photographer describes his experience of being underwater with the gannets as ‘amazing.’

The BWPA’s touring exhibition can be seen at Moors Valley until 17 March. Entry to the exhibition is free, but parking charges apply.

he green energy elements will include: a turf roof to blend in with the natural surroundings, absorb rainfall and provide good insulation; solar panels to generate electricity, saving approximately £1,000 a year in energy bills and timber framed walls combined with straw bales to produce a thick insulating ‘cocoon.’

The Bournemouth nature reserve’s new centre should be ready to open to the public in time for summer 2013 and will offer an exhibition area, a dedicated space for learning and community use, outdoor learning areas and wildlife garden, easy access for all abilities and ages, work space for staff, volunteers and other community groups, a retail outlet similar to a National Trust shop and toilet facilities.

For the first time, the centre will give the public the opportunity to see and handle some of the archaeological collections unearthed at Hengistbury Head over the past 100 years. Visitors will be able to interact

Councillor Rod Cooper, cabinet member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, said, “The ecofriendly element to this building is vitally important to ensure that it not only blends in with the beautiful natural surroundings but that it is also energy efficient and has minimum impact on the environment.

“This is a really exciting project for the area and I am delighted to see the new centre taking shape.

More than one million people visit Hengistbury Head every year and the centre will provide a unique and dedicated visitor centre where people can come and learn about the area’s rich heritage, including the wildlife, geology and archaeology that can be found here.”

Costing approximately £1 million, the funding for the new centre is made up from £300,000 of developer contributions, £432,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £300,000 from the Landfill Communities Fund via Canford Environmental Ltd.

he final is approaching and the students are positive that they can compete with the other schools in the region for the awards given out by the judges. Prior to the final, the inFUSed Group are required to produce a company report and a presentation with all the evidence, facts and other relevant information on what they have done since the beginning of the competition.

During the Christmas holiday, the inFUSed Group were at

Plowmans Garden Centre, where they offered children and their families the opportunity to have their photo taken with Santa.

Many families enjoyed their visit to Plowmans and the students enabled the families to capture the moment so that they could remember their visit and their meeting with Santa for years to come.

As well as providing this service to the visiting families, Plowmans and the inFUSed Group raised money for the Aliss Merlo charity, which supports disabled

children with the provision of mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs. The students raised ÂŁ257.95 for the charity and would like to thank everyone who supported this worthwhile cause at Plowmans.

The students have written a personal message to the local community: “We would like to thank everyone who has supported our local enterprise. We have gained more skills and a lot more experience through this process and we would like to thank the local community for supporting us.�

New Hideaway in Verwood REVIEW by Janine Pulford

GOOD NEWS! Verwood has bucked the national trend of pub closures with the opening of the Hideaway.

The clue to its location is in its name and though only a stone’s throw from the town centre, this new pub/restaurant is hidden away behind the recreation ground – a little further to drive than it is to walk.

Many readers will instantly recognise the venue, which was previously Club 31 and prior to that the Legion.

The function room is still entered through the front doors with the pub and restaurant accessed by a side entrance. Some people will experience deja vu as they walk inside, because the layout is similar, but the big difference is that there is no membership fee and the pub is open every day with food served from 11am9pm. Breakfast, bar lunches and evening meals cover a spectrum of prices and tastes. There are several menus plus a specials board offering many choices from a sandwich to a three course gourmet meal.

The restaurant can seat up to 55, is family friendly, has its own bar and is great for large parties as well as couples and even single diners who are made very welcome.

On the cold night we visited, it was a pleasure to walk into the warmth of the Hideaway.

Manager, Blaize Rhodes greeted us and Jayne Young showed us to our table. We settled back to look at the menus with a glass of freshly mulled wine, warming and spicy to the palate.

Melt in the mouth hors d’oeuvres followed: queen olives stuffed with pimentos plus a dish of bite-sized home-made cheese and herb biscuits – beautiful.

Our waitress, Rachel was happy to take an order from whichever menu we chose. Nick and I went a la carte as the variety of starters and mains had something for each of us.

My smoked salmon starter with traditional garnish looked delightful and was a fusion of flavours. The garnish was fresh and crunchy with a beautiful zingy dressing. Even more texture came in the shape of capers and pickled cucumber, which complemented the smoked

salmon perfectly. I loved every morsel.

Nick’s seared wood pigeon with beetroot tapenade was deemed a pleasant combination and the pigeon was expertly cooked with a nice rosy pink centre.

Ingredients are fresh, seasonal and sourced locally. Each dish is cooked to order, so we didn’t expect swift service and enjoyed a respectable break between courses. When Nick’s sea bass with stir fried noodles and sweet chilli dressing arrived, it looked spectacular. Two generous fillets atop a bed of noodles finished with salad garnish and fresh lemon. Needless to say, it soon disappeared. To preserve his waistline, Nick hadn’t ordered mashed potato or triple cooked chips as extras, and readily admitted, he didn’t need them.

My gnocchi with blue cheese sauce was a knockout dish. I’d only tried gnocchi once before in an Italian restaurant and found it stodgy. The experience at the Hideaway was on a different level. The dumplings were small and light in texture. The salty tang to the sauce was divine and the combination of the two together, with fresh, crisp salad garnish put me temporarily in heaven. Although I didn’t want the flavours to stop, there was dessert waiting in the wings.

A white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake with winterberry compote rounded off Nick’s meal and I lavished my taste buds with a crème brulée served with a warm, home-made fruit and nut, crunchy biscotti with a cinnamon kick.

Hats off to the award winning head chef Paul Ardner, who came in at short notice because the executive chef, Matt (who has worked under Marco Pierre-White) had been called away on a family emergency. Paul with Jack, senior chef de partie, did a wonderful job.

I have revealed the Hideaway as a pub with a restaurant, but it offers a great deal more.

There is a huge function room, which is already home to the jazz club. Seating 150, it has a bar, stage and dance floor and a mini kitchen, so is ideal for parties, wakes, wedding receptions and buffets.

From a sporting angle, the Hideaway has Sky Sports, five dartboards, two pool tables and a purpose made two table snooker room.

This is truly a local pub with a difference. It really does offer a good mix of community facilities and though it may take a bit more time to shake off the ‘club’ feel it is a welcoming family pub and dog friendly too.

A midweek Moules Night has proved popular an upcoming themed evening is a Valentine’s dinner dance, so book now to avoid disappointment.

The owner of the Hideaway, George Rhodes, has made a brave move to open this new pub in Verwood and the restaurant will delight you with its gastronomic dishes. Do make a point of visiting.

appy New Year to everyone in Verwood and Three Legged Cross.

My deepest thanks goes to everyone who played their part in another successful year for the town in 2012. We celebrated together for the Jubilee, Darren Kenny’s Paralympic success and the Christmas Extravaganza. We came together in remembrance in November and in our thousands we supported the Verwood Carnival and the Rustic Fayre.

Moving forward into 2013, the community spirit that is so strong in the town will hopefully ensure another excellent year. 2013 will see the completion of the new leisure facilities at Potterne, Emmanuel School and the Hub. Work will start on the new Morrisons’ store and hopefully the fundraising for the MUGA will finally be completed. I would like to encourage everyone to try something new in Verwood this year. We have so many excellent local groups that are looking for new members, new local businesses to try out and many great sports teams to get back into shape.

I wish all Verwood and Three Legged Cross residents good luck for the year ahead and thank you all for your support so far. Together, let us make 2013 another year to remember.

A marvellous year for

RINGWOOD

W

hen I took office in May last year, I predicted a marvellous year for the town; I was overwhelmed by the enjoyment created by the people of Ringwood.

Everyone took pleasure in the Royal Wedding; and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was a resounding success with over 40 party packs going to street-parties and other events held in Ringwood. The bi-annual Pedal Car Grand Prix followed soon afterwards with hundreds of people lining the route to watch two exhilarating races. Two months later, Ringwood held another very successful carnival.

In October, Ringwood had the honour of a visit by HRH the Duke of Kent to officially open the new Gateway building, a unique concept in local government which was completed by Hampshire County, New Forest District and Ringwood Town councils. And in December, the Mayor’s Civic Service was a ‘Celebration of Ringwood’; a brand new event in a Charles Dickens themed ‘show’.

During 2013, we are looking forward to developments on the old cinema/Furlong site with the opportunity to provide new large commercial properties. In addition, the Greyfriars/Ringwood Musical & Dramatic Society scheme for a new multi-purpose hall and arts centre should begin to take shape with a hoped-for planning consent, once final details are resolved. 2013 looks like another exciting year for Ringwood!

HAVE YOUR SAY ON CARERS’ STRATEGY

arers in Dorset are being asked to have their say on a new carers’ strategy for Dorset. A consultation is running until 4 March, and a number of local priorites have been proposed by Dorset County Council and NHS Dorset including supporting people to identify themselves as carers; and involving carers in future service developments.

The council is now asking people for their views on the draft strategy. The responses will be used to inform the final version and will underpin an action plan for the next three years.

NEW MULTIPLE MYELOMA SUPPORT GROUP

A

local support group for patients and carers of multiple myeloma has been set up to cover the Dorset area.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells within the blood and directly affects the bone marrow. In myeloma, the DNA of the plasma cell is damaged, causing it to become malignant. Unlike many cancers, myeloma often does not exist as a lump or tumour, instead the myeloma cells divide and expand within the bone marrow.

Each year in the UK, approximately 4000 patients are diagnosed with myeloma and unfortunately at this time there is no cure.

Carole Jones, whose husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, set up a local support group which meets every other month in Lytchett Minster.

“It took many months to feel that life was not automatically over – things would change and treatment side-effects were difficult to deal with, but with help and support you can cope and that’s why I felt it important to set up an informal support network to help those dealing with myeloma,” she said.

arie Curie has created a new post in the county for ambassadors to help raise awareness all over the country.

Jacqueline Moss is one of the new County Ambassadors for Dorset.

She said, “I knew nothing about Marie Curie. I’d heard of them but had no idea that they looked after all end of life care, and not just cancer.

“So when I lost my mother, I wanted to give something back. It’s my job to raise awareness of what Marie Curie does and how the charity can help, not just the patient but the family at their time of need.”

A fund-raising group was set up for Ferndown and Verwood in November 2011, and raised £13,235 in its first year.

Dame Mary He met Lord Byron during his Cambridge University years. They toured Europe together and became lifelong friends.

Bankes travelled extensively in the Middle East and Egypt where he became interested in deciphering the hieroglyphs. Wherever he went he bought works of art and objects of historic interest. Everything was shipped back to Kingston Lacy, where he gradually built up an outstanding collection of great historical and artistic value.

As a scholar he was accompanied on his travels by a team of artists and specialists in various fields. When he visited a site of interest they all set to work recording their observations.

The artists made meticulous drawings of architecture, inscriptions and art work found on walls. In fact Bankes’ portfolios with his own explanations and interpretations are of immense value to modern scholars, as much of the original material has since disappeared.

The chatelaine of Kingston Lacy in the early 20th century was Henrietta Bankes. She was the wife of Walter Ralph Bankes, so she wasn’t genetically descended from Brave Dame Mary.

But she had Dame Mary’s spirit.

She supervised the building of St Stephen’s Church and she also embellished the Kingston Lacy grounds with a lavish Japanese garden.

When the First World War began to create even more havoc than the Civil War had done in Dame Mary’s time, Henrietta converted the servants’ quarters into a hospital for injured soldiers. She also built a war hospital in the vicinity.

Her son Ralph eventually had to face the fact that the nation would be a better custodian for the treasures of the Bankes family. In his will, he bequeathed Kingston Lacy and Corfe Castle to the National Trust in the hope that Brave Dame Mary’s heritage would henceforth be in good hands.

ady Mary Bankes, chatelaine of Corfe Castle, is Dorset’s answer to Boadicea and Joan of Arc. While the rest of Dorset succumbed to the Parliamentarians during the Civil War (1642-1652), Lady Mary staunchly defended her home and the Royalist cause against repeated assaults from the Roundheads.

She was in sole charge of Corfe Castle when Parliamentarian troops moved into Dorset to wipe out Royalist opposition. Sir John Bankes, her husband, was with the king, and her four sons had been sent away to safety. This left Lady Mary, her six daughters, the servants and a force of five armed men to defend Corfe Castle.

The picturesque ruins, perched on top of a steep hill with the wind blowing through the broken walls reveal the final outcome of the struggle, but the enduring beauty of the defiant, skyward-pointing remaining walls implies that this was no easy surrender.

The first attack came from a troop of 200300 soldiers in May 1643. The steep ascent to Corfe Castle provided a natural defence against attackers, which William the Conqueror had no doubt foreseen when he had the castle built.

There were probably more women than men at the castle at the time. Mary had married in 1618 and her six daughters would have been feisty young women in 1643. They stood on the battlements together with the servants and the five guards and hurled down rocks and red-hot embers on the soldiers who were struggling to scale the hill.

The household asked for reinforcements and 80 men were sent to the castle. The next attack came in June the same year. Once more Mary and her allies held out against 500-600 Roundheads, killing about 100 men in the process.

This went on for a couple of years. Mary and her girls remained unassailable in their hill-top fortification. Their downfall was the result of treachery. One of their own men conspired with the enemy and let them enter the castle disguised as Royalists. Mary, her daughters and her retinue were expelled from the castle, and later that year it was blown up by gunpowder, leaving only the ravaged shell that is still standing.

When Charles II came to power the Bankes were given land near Wimborne Minster where they built Kingston Lacy, their new home. They already owned extensive lands around Corfe Castle, Wareham and Studland.

‘Brave Dame Mary’ was an ancestor to be proud of, and for the next three centuries her descendants never wavered in their devotion to the inheritance she’d so courageously defended for them. Amongst other things, they built St Stephen’s Church in Pamphill and a summer beach house near Studland – now a luxury hotel.

In the early 19th century the owner of Kingston Lacy was William John Bankes. He was of an artistic temperament and a brilliant scholar.

He may even have been a genius, but persistence, however, was not his strong point. He tended to upset people he worked with, and to make matters worse, he got caught in compromising sexual situations with soldiers at a time when being gay was a criminal offence.

William John Bankes ended up living in France with brief, weekend trips to Kingston Lacy, made possible because yet another quirk of the legal system decreed that warrants of arrest could only be issued on weekdays.

Christine lived in Salisbury from 1971 to 1991 where she juggled teaching, family, gardening and life generally.

She also discovered a passion for writing when she joined an evening class in creative writing.

She moved to rural Normandy in 1991 and resumed her teaching career while immersing herself in a different life style. “Winning this year’s Creative Writing Award for an article has given me an added incentive to continue writing,” she says.

The HIGH COST of dying Ringwood’s townsfolk will now have to pay £425 for a 30 year grave instead of £212 and an infant’s grave will go up from £96 to £190. The interment fee for anyone over 16 has more than doubled to £265 from £132 (excluding grave digging). However, for a child under 16 there is still no interment fee.

The burial of ashes will be £130, just under double the previous cost of £66 and scattering of ashes has increased from £28 to £55.

Terry Simpson, Ringwood town clerk, said, “The reason the new charges appear to show a large increase is simply because residents in the town who do not use the service have provided a large subsidy for those who do have a need to use the cemetery i.e. the previous charges have been too low.”

He explained that all councils are being encouraged by the government to look critically at every service they provide. He said, “It is something that the town council has done for many years as part of our normal budget process. This year we have had a closer look at the costs of running the cemetery and income received from users.”

Other changes include the introduction of charges for the exclusive right of burial for five years: £35 for an infant’s grave and £75 for an earth grave. Previously there was no fee. The renewal of a burial of ashes plot for five years now also incurs a charge of £35 or £75.

With regards to the quadrupling of costs to non-parishioners, Terry Simpson said, “Non residents make no contribution to the costs of running the Ringwood cemetery nor will they contribute to the cost of a new cemetery when the existing one becomes full. The council tax that they pay is to the authority in whose area they reside, many of which do not provide their own cemetery. The council believes that Ringwood residents should not subsidise the burial of people from outside the town and it is therefore right that they should pay rather more than people living in the town.”

Scout awards for local Cubs Verwood’s Apollo Cub Pack is celebrating after three of their senior Cubs were presented with the Chief Scout’s Silver Award – the highest honour for this section of the Scout movement.

The award is only presented when Cubs have completed various challenges. It took the boys two years to achieve silver and their activities included camping, archery, air-rifle shooting, fundraising, woodworking, survival skills and cooking.

The adverts are also considered to be poorly placed and have an appreciable negative effect on the appearance of the built environment.

Dorset County Council will lodge an appeal. It claims the advertising revenue raised could be used to better maintain the roundabouts. The signs will remain in place pending the appeal.

My hope is that you will find my letters interesting and in bringing our charity to your attention you will want to find out more about our branch, the centre and the support you could give us. Who knows, perhaps you may even consider becoming one of our intrepid volunteers. It really is a happy friendly place to visit so why not come and get involved, even for a couple of hours a week?

So, where to begin?

At the beginning may be good!

The branch was actually formed on 8 December 1964 when a group of people, largely from TocH and the Masons, jointly decided that Bournemouth should have a contact centre for people with MS. They rented an old hall near Pokesdown but after a few short years managed to purchase a larger hall in Walpole Road, Boscombe.

The branch flourished throughout the 70s and early 80s until it was decided to move again, this time to a purpose built building on the outskirts of the town.

Many sites were looked at before Church Lane, West Parley was chosen and on 9 June 1985, the Osborne Day Centre was officially opened.

Next month we’ll begin to explore our branch in more detail.

Ferndown allotments on track

Mary Shelley tribute

Following a campaign for allotments in Ferndown, the town council has purchased Longham Allotment Gardens, owned for decades by the Canford Estate.

Plans are now in hand to improved the site in partnership with the Allotments Association and make more plots available on areas that now lie vacant.

Cllr Steve Lugg, chairman of the council’s allotment working party explained, “We need to hold a consultation meeting for existing tenants to talk

about our plans, and find out tenants’ views.

“Next year we will begin dividing uncultivated areas into new plots.

Smaller plots are popular nowadays and this means that more people can get digging. Ferndown residents will have priority.”

Cllr Mrs Jean Read added, “There are over 100 people on our waiting list and it’s been a long wait for many of them. By no means all of them will be able to get an allotment at Longham, but we hope to have at least one more site ready with more plots by the end of this year.”

The author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, has been given a permanent tribute in Bournemouth thanks to a group of students from Avonbourne College.

The school successfully applied to the SITA Trust to fund a sculpture to symbolise the Shelley story and specifically Frankenstein.

A statue, along with a range of gothic-inspired bat boxes, were installed at Shelley Park in Boscombe on Friday, 14 December.

Here in Dorset and on the Hampshire border, there are many talented amateur photographers and mags4dorset has decided to run a photographic competition to give them all the opportunity to produce a front cover shot for 4Dorset magazine. The theme is wildlife and this includes plants and trees as well as animals, birds, amphibians, insects, fish and spiders. The photograph should be taken in either Dorset or Hampshire.

The last competition we held was in 2008. It was a huge success with several images making the front cover of Town and Village (now 4Dorset).

The first prize on offer this year is a 14 mega pixel GE X400, which produces high-quality imagery, has a sharp 15x zoom lens, and a sturdy build. Offering exceptional value at £79, the camera will be presented by Ferndown Photographics. The winner will also have their prizewinning shot put on the front cover of 4Dorset and it will also appear on-line in our other media outlets. The two runners up will also have their photographs published on the front cover of 4Dorset.

Entrants may submit a maximum of three photographs on the theme of ‘Wildlife’.

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is encouraging supporters to sign up now for its Coast to Coast (C2C) Cycle Challenge. The 54 mile event starts in Watchet and finishes at West Bay near Bridport. There is a shorter 11 mile route which begins at Drimpton, Dorset, also finishing at West Bay. Anyone wishing to enter should complete an on-line registration form via www. dsairambulance.org.uk.

in motoring Drink driving numbers down from previous year The number of people arrested during the 2012 Christmas drink and drug driving campaign fell by 25% compared to figures in 2011.

A total of 100 people were arrested, 79 of those were men; and a total of 54 drivers were between 25-50 years of age.

During the 2012 campaign, officers acted on information submitted by the public to intercept suspected drink drivers on Dorset’s roads.

Traffic Sergeant Joe Pardey said that it was

encouraging to see the number of drivers risking their lives, and the lives of other road users reduced.

“Most of the motorists stopped were very supportive of the officers’ actions and fully supported the campaign to reduce road casualties.

“The message seems to be getting across to the people of Dorset that drinking and driving is dangerous and just not worth the risk.”

Sleeping street lights As a cost saving measure, the part-night street lighting regime started in Corfe Mullen, West Moors, Ferndown and West Parley on Monday, 14 January. The lights will be extinguished between 12am-5.30am GMT, and 1am6.30am BST. Over 1,000 street lights will still remain lit across the four areas.

Cllr Peter Finney, Cabinet Member for Roads & Transport at Dorset County Council said, “Dorset County Council will save in the order of £180,000, a considerable sum of money”. He added that consultations had taken place with the local police and where they had raised areas of concern, the lights will be kept on.

He said, “If it turns out that crime is increasing in some areas due to a lack of lighting then we will do our utmost to rectify the situation.”

Vehicle crime on the rise Dorset police officers are urging vehicle owners to remove items of value when leaving their vehicle unattended, and to not be tempted to leave them in the boot. Laptops, handbags, CDs, wallets and tools should all be removed, together with satellite and GPS equipment.

To prevent number plates being stolen, consider replacing the screws with clutch head ones which cannot be unscrewed. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activity by calling 01202 222222.

MP calls for ban on smoking in cars Labour MP Alex Cunningham has called for a ban on smoking in cars where children are present - a ban which has been introduced in several US states, including California, as well as in parts of Canada and Australia.

Research suggests that more than 300,000 children visit doctors every year with health problems associated with passive smoking.

Tory MP Philip Davies, who campaigns against political correctness said it should be up to parents to decide whether they smoked in cars and that there is a ‘complete lack of evidence’ about the beneficial impact of the proposal.

Writing poetry is harder than learning the 18-times table while being chased by a shark. Poets therefore need inspiration like toothy marine creatures need meat, and it seems that decades ago the most influential British poets found refuge in Littlehampton.

That makes this seaside resort the perfect place for this poetically themed Southern Safari.

C

learly, our transport must be able to inspire poets so we have selected the Nissan Juke. This stands out from the crowd like a shark in a fish tank.

Why? Because its styling resembles a beach buggy, it has an unquantifiable x-factor, and it is very fashionable.

Pleasingly - unlike some style-focussed vehicles – it is also easy to live with.

It therefore has room for five people which complements the low running costs and solid build quality.

Time then to grab a pen, hop into the Juke, and set-off to Littlehampton.

Leave Verwood on the B3081 to Ringwood then follow the A31 eastbound. Continue on the M27/

A27 - while conjuring-up a shark related poem - then follow the A259 to our inspiring destination.

The Littlehampton area has been occupied since pre-historic times. As such it appears in the Domesday Book as ‘Hantone’ which was probably a fishing community. However, during the 18th century, the town became a holiday destination too. It was then – so the rumours suggest – that Lord Byron, a leading figure in the romantic movement, visited and poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley also enjoyed the sea air. I wonder if Littlehampton inspired the masterpiece ... ‘Why Is That Shark Licking His Lips?’

That sums-up the destination but what about the car?

But Littlehampton is more than a nice place to write poetry and hide from toothy marine creatures. As such, the East Beach Café now sits on the seafront and is one of the most memorable buildings on the coast.

It is a dark-coloured steel structure with a rough, weathered, appearance that reflects its exposed position.

Furthermore, The Body Shop’s World Headquarters can be found to the north of the town and Littlehampton was the first community to have a lifeboat funded by the BBC’s Blue Peter. It has also been rumoured that Ronnie Barker’s classic 80s’ sitcom, ‘Open All Hours,’ was inspired by a local shop.

The NISSAN JUKE has surefooted handling, a range of refined engines, and plenty of gadgets. But that is only the opening verse. People who love this car love the styling first. They also love the image it conveys which is young, adventurous, and fun. That might sound shallow to serious poetry lovers but fashion is a key selling point for thousands of people. Bet Lord Byron would have agreed.
