HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY When it came to picking out gifts, I sucked. Without help, I was lost up shit creek. Luckily I have a beautiful girlfriend who wasn’t afraid to help me out in that department and after a few years, I’m finally getting the hang of it. I sat down and had a chat with the owners of this damn fine BBQ place Mike & Joey to see if they would share their BBQ-ing tips and tell me how they get the brisket so moist and delicious. While they
wouldn’t reveal their recipes, they did tell us a bit about their restaurant that is quickly amassing a big and devoted following. MAGX: Why BBQ? Joey: We always wanted a BBQ restaurant. We thought it would be a fun deal to do so we researched it for several years and when one of the buildings we own became available, we jumped on it. MAGX: How did you choose what would be on the menu? Mike: Through research. We looked at menus from other parts of the country and around Texas and watching shows like BBQ Paradise and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We hand-picked what we

thought would be good. Like the Carolina Sandwich from of course, the Carolinas. We’ve got Alabama Sauce as well as BBQ sauce and many other things you may not find at other local BBQ joints. MAGX: Say I’m having a beer over at Smokin’ Aces, your Bar & Grill, will you guys deliver some BBQ? Joey: Definitely. We deliver to Smokin Aces all day. Some times Skean Dhu when my brother David is drinking there, ha ha. MAGX: Well your Brisket is definitely our favorite! Joey: Well If you like our meat, you’ll love our sausage! CHRISTOPHER ALLEN POE RELEASES “THE PORTAL” If you’ve been to some of our MAGX JAMS, our annual Birthday celebration, you may remember Chris as one of the two guys that mke up the kick ass electronic rock duo known as INSECT. The past few years, Christopher Allen Poe has been working on one of his other passions, A novel. Now with the hard work of writing it behind him a book deal in hand, Christopher prepares to show the world that great writing is in his blood.....Literally. MAGX: Hey Chris, It's been a couple years since we've had the pleasure of hearing you play down here with your band INSECT. Hopefully we can have you guys back down for another MAGX JAM soon. It looks like your talents extend past music. Without spoiling it, tell us about your novel? CHRIS: Sure thing. THE PORTAL is the story of Vivian Carmichael, who’s been hiding in the mountains with her son Cody. She’s found a safe place for him, until the night he crawls into bed and whispers two words that fill her with terror.
MAGX: Sounds creepy! How long have you been working on it? CHRIS: THE PORTAL took a little over two years. I’ve spent seven years learning how to write though, and I’ve been lucky to study from best-selling author Bonnie Hearn Hill. Otherwise, it would’ve taken longer to learn the craft.

profound impact on me. MAGX: What was the process like, writing and getting this published? CHRIS: Long but rewarding :) Most people don’t realize how much time a novel takes. After learning the craft, you have to study the business side too. Publishers, agents, etc. Still, there is no greater feeling than holding your own published book in your hand. MAGX: Is Christopher Allan Poe your given name? Any relation to a certain other Poe? CHRIS: Actually, that is the name on my birth cer tificate, and I am related to Edgar. We’ve passed the name Allan down for a few generations now. As a kid, I used to hide from it because I was teased endlessly. These days, I embrace the name, and especially Poe’s writing, which had such a | 8 | MAGX
MAGX: What can people expect when they pick up The Portal? CHRIS: The Portal is a paranormal thriller/ horror novel in the vein of Stephen King or Dean Koontz. In music, we have a saying. Don’t bore us, get to the chorus. With novels, I apply the same philosophy. I like a quick pace with dialogue, and strong characters who leap to action. MAGX: What was the inspiration for the story and the characters? CHRIS: THE PORTAL came to me in a dream. I woke up at 3AM with the idea, and I ended up finishing the first chapter that night. I really didn’t want to forget it. Later, my main character Vivian was inspired by
bits and pieces of Tori Amos and Sigourney Weaver. Strange combo, but it worked for me. MAGX: If this were picked up as a movie, who do you see as the cast? CHRIS: I always love great bad guys. For my villain Jarod, I’d have to go with Christian Bale. His performance in American Psycho is a stellar. Malcolm McDowell would make an excellent Stromsky. Without giving away too much, Morgan Freeman would be perfect for Mr. Vincent. MAGX: Are there other writing aspirations past novels? CHRIS: I think every novelist dreams of seeing his work on the silver screen one day. For now though, I’m content with the written word. Movies are amazing, but I think a novel provides the reader with something extra. MAGX: What is going on with you musically? CHRIS: Right now, INSECT is taking a break while I’m on my book tour. We’ll be back and firing on all eight cylinders soon. We’d love to come rock with you again. Texas is still our favorite state, and McAllen tops the list of cities. MAGX: Seeing as how you are pretty talented musically, have you thought about composing a score to the book? CHRIS: Actually, my publisher and I are working on the audiobook now. Our goal is to have the audio play out like a movie, complete with sound effects. Something to creep you out while on long car trips at night. REBECCA: life, life, and more life MAGX: How many original songs have you written? REBECCA: I have 5 completed songs and many unfinished MAGX: You won a competition recently in L.A. Tell us about the experience. REBECCA: It was a once in a lifetime experience! I met so many people and formed new relationships. The culmination was being awarded "Female Singer of the Year". I couldn’t have done it without the support of Johnny Llanes and Albert Alaniz from John Albert Talent and Models. MAGX: Whats in the works right now for you and your music ? REBECCA: I have not made a definite decision. I am still in the process of finding the best agency who can represent me. I
