Mu Sool Won is a Korean martial arts system founded by Byung In Lee in 2010. Our style comes from Kuk Sool Won system founded by Seo InHyuk (Hangul the Kuk Sa Nim or Grandmaster) in 1958.The name Mu Sool Won translates to “Martial Arts” (often shortened to ‘Mu Sool’) and it is currently taught in Texas and in Fort Smith,Arkansas.

WHAT IS MU SOOL WON? The traditional Korean martial of Mu Sool Won is a systematic study of all of the traditional fighting arts, which together comprise martial arts history of the Korean nation. As such Mu Sool Won is an extremely well-organized system of martial arts which seeks to integrate and explore all aspects of the traditional Korean martial arts. As a martial arts system, Mu Sool Won covers the entire spectrum of the traditional Asian fighting arts and techniques of body conditioning, as well as mental development and traditional weapons training. I read there are 5 guiding principles in Mu Sool Won, can you give us some insight on that? The goal of every student should be to become a person in his family and for his community through hard work. Is it true that meditation is a big part of Mu sool? It is a big part of this system of learning but is developed slowly over time. What kind of techniques are implemented in Mu Sool Won? Physical Techniques: Hand Striking Leg Techniques Throwing & Grappling Joint-Locking Techniques Falling Techniques Traditional Korean Weapons What is the highest honor one can achieve in Mu Sool Won?

Grand Master, but this is only entitled to one individual. This individual will eventually designated and appoint a successor at the appropriate time. But until then, the next highest honor will be that of Chief Master. I know Mu Sool is a very new style, what are some things that would benefit a potential pupil in joining such a new style? It is deeply rooted in the tenets of Korean martial arts, namely, Yu Won Hwa, based on Korean martial arts traditions that date from antiquity and is based on three foundations: Family Martial Arts, the Buddhist martial arts, and the royal court/military martial arts. The Mu Sool discipline of Yu Won Hwa gives his students a sense of accomplishment and self-worth that will trans-

A bit about

Mark Farina It's July already, and with a month of summer complete, this could only mean one thing; the second installment of the Muve Music Outdoor Concert Series. The venue will remain in front of the McAllen Convention Center, and will once again be a free event and will be hosting a variety of local DJs and live acts, along with Ft. Worth Producer/ DJ John "Phabulous" Funk, and world famous house DJ, Producer, and "Mushroom Jazz" creator Mark Farina. He is known for his ability to combine styles like acid, jazz, West Coast hip-hop, and house music, all while staying true to where he came from. Born in Chicago, one of the forefronts of house music, Farina began his musical journey mixing a deeper, moodier style of dance music, eventually moving San Francisco, where he continued to develop his skills and name. He created his trademark Mushroom Jazz sound during this time, touring throughout the country as well expanding his take on dance music throughout San Francisco. He has released seven installments of the Mushroom Jazz series, along with many other compilation and studio recordings, and has consistently toured the world, sharing stages with Z-Trip, Miguel Migs, and Jane's Addiction to name a few. We were given the privilege and opportunity to get to know the man who can be described as a pioneer and house legend. This is what he had to say to the R.G.V.

How is the tour going? Excellent thus far, many good shows and places. You played in Austin a few months back, and now McAllen, what do you think about the vibe here in Texas? Texas is like it's own country. It's similar to California in that there are so many places to play inside one state. Explain to us a little more in detail what your Mushroom Jazz style sounds like and what inspired you to follow this direction? Mushroom Jazz is based in 90's East Coast hip hop, UK acid jazz and instrumental beats. Around 100-110 bpm roughly, a little slower than house. What do you think about the spike of popularity in dance music in recent years? It's always nice to see more people getting into different kinds of dance and electronica not just guitar Rock bands. It seems like dance music production is also rising, with new plug ins and gear coming out

monthly, what is your approach to producing? I still prefer to use midi gear outboard. It's the best. Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? I'd love to work with so many people, but off the top of my head Q-Tip, Jamiroquai, Mos Def, and Wynton Marsalis. Do you plan on continuing the Mushroom Jazz series or do you have something else in mind? Yes, I plan on it sticking around some more. What’s your favorite piece of musical gear? Some of the gear I currently use is AKAI beat machine, MPC 4000, Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1W, and Jomox XBase 999. What does the rest of 2011 have in store for you? Most likely just continue touring and take care of my son, Dylan. Thanks for your time and see you soon McAllen!
