If it’s tasty, If it’s cool, If it’s unique, you will find it here on MAGX approved eats. Every month we scour South Texas for the best places to eat and drink. This is one such place...

DOGGIES

CHICAGO STYLE RESTAURANT

104 North Bicentennial Boulevard, McAllen, TX (956) 683-9395 If you've already been to Doggies, then you are probably a repeat customer. If you haven't, then let us introduce you to this hidden gem that serves up all the essential food groups, pipin' hot and absolutely delicious. Doggies is tucked away on the corner of Business 83 (OLD 83) and Bicentennial in McAllen. At first glance, it looks as though Doggie’s only specializes in gourmet hot dogs, but let me tell you that their specialties extend far beyond. The MAGX crew is no stranger to Doggie’s fine dining. From jumbo, tasty chicken

wings that put other chicken wing restaurants to shame, to the best lasagna I have ever tasted (and I have eaten at every Italian food joint in a 300 mile radius), Doggie’s is definitely more than meets the eye. We decided to order a generous sampling of the Doggie’s menu: four different hot dogs, nachos, their famous, deliciously battered mushrooms, an order of the famous Doggie’s fried mozzarella empanadas (one is served with every order) that are way better than cheese sticks, the Italian beef sandwich, some huge margaritas, and a couple of beers. Doggie’s kitchen staff rocked, everything was out in a flash and tasted delicious and fresh! Total time before our food came was less than 15 minutes from the time we were seated. First came

our appetizers and they were hot and delicious. The nachos were piled 3 times higher than the basket they were served in, topped with ground beef, tons of cheese, and avocado. The fried mushrooms are very hot coming out of the fryer and straight to your table, and need a couple minutes to cool before you can dip them in the tasty marinara sauce that accompanies them. The batter on them tastes amazing. David, the owner, would not release the recipe, with good reason. If I had a family recipe that tasted this good, I wouldn't either. The hotdogs came next. Holy bejezzus, they were generously topped and amazing! We had a chili cheese dog, a

Mexican dog, the Chicago dog and the Premium with bacon. These aren't the hot dogs you find at Stripes. These are huge, fresh hotdogs with all the trimmings served with fries or huge onion rings. DOGGIES is a one stop eatery for all your favorite food types: Mexican, American, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Italian food and so much more. This isn't just a hotdog place; it's a place of worship, a church of Deliciousness if you will. Think I’m exaggerating? Stop on by. You too will be converted and baptized and become one of the faithful.

Quietest place on Earth mutes all sounds, messes with your head

The room holds the current Guinness World Record as the quietest place on the planet, and companies from all over the world seek out its unique acoustic properties. The walls of the chamber are lined with sound-absorbing baffles that can capture noise and mute it in an instant. This allows companies — both Whirlpool and Harley-Davidson have visited — to test just how noisy their products are without the risk of outside interference. But while the super-silent oasis is a great testbed for various products, it holds a darker side: silence, it turns out, can put a great strain on the human brain. Researchers at NASA test the room’s unique acoustic capabilities on humans rather than hardware. The noiselessness is used to simulate the silence of space — an environment astronauts would be well served to grow accustomed to.

THE WONDER HOSPITAL By: BEOMSIK SHIMBE SHIM

A surreal journey through a mysterious hospital that alters the perception of physical beauties. The Wonder Hospital, a 3D & puppet animated film, is a surreal journey of oddity and empty illusion. In a mysterious hospital, modification of physical beauty is not what you would expect. A girl’s desire for superficial beauty leads her to chase after the luring ‘After’ images on a path of advertisements throughout the hospital.

THE HUNGER GAMES By: Suzanne Collins

You’ve seen the movie, now read the books! Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

“The Wonder Hospital” is a feat of pure imagination. Its inventive mix of animation and puppetry evokes a hauntingly surreal landscape of the mind and body” - Los Angeles Film Festival, Best animated short

There’s a new festival in town, “Y VA ESTAR CHINGONA.” It’s called CHINGONA FEST. We got ahold of Dee, one of the founders of this Female empowerment festival to find out a little more about the most creativley name festival in the Valley! MAGX: What is Chingona Fest about?

underestimate the power of a Chingona!

DEE: Chingona Fest is a women's empowerment festival meant to highlight female businesses and women in the arts. We also make monetary donations to women in the community.

MAGX: What kinds of vendors are going to be there?

MAGX: What inspired you to create “Chingona Fest”? DEE: I created Chingona Fest on a whim. One morning I was watching, well, listening to, not watching, the HBO Documentary "The Latino List". Author Sandra Cisneros was talking about what it is to be Chingona. I could identify with her take on it and I knew that other women could also. So, I told my husband I should create a festival and call it Chingona Fest. He said not with that name. Well, I am. So, just goes to show, never

DEE: There will be ~ 36 vendors, primarily jewelry, but crafts and art also. There will be women promoting their businesses and women's organiztions as well. MAGX: What bands are going to play? Is it a female lineup? DEE: There will be a female line up of live music from 6-2am. The musical acts will be a combo of acoustic and full bands. The line up consists of Miss Cherie & Tina, Back Seat Lullabies, Bella Donna, Gatos Locos, Keytar Dreams and Conan O'Brian Band.. in that order. We are lacking one band, so if anyone's interested...

MAGX: When and where is chingona fest going to be? DEE: Chingona Fest will be held at the Cubby Hole Saloon & Cantina in Edinburg Texas. The public is urged to attend. The festival is free of charge and minors are welcome until 9pm. MAGX: How can people participate as vendors/ bands / businesses? DEE: We have no more vendor tables left, they've been sold out for a while. We still have room for one more band. We would love for businesses to become contributing sponsors of Chingona Fest. Please feel free to message us of your interest. MAGX: What is the ultimate goal of the festival

| 12 | MAGX

DEE: I think the ultimate goal for Chingona Fest is to become a festival that continues to empower girls and women in our community, highlight women's business, women in the arts and to give back to women in that same community that need just a little donation so they can create a better life for themselves and/or their families. We want to be known for creating positive changes in our community even if it's one woman at a time. MAGX: Where can we get more information about Chingona Fest? DEE: For more information about Chingona Fest feel free to contact Dee Herrera 956330-7120 or Heidi Sanchez 956-537-7515. You can find us on facebook at facebook. com/chingonafest or via email at chingonafest@yahoo.com

IT’S BACK!!!

MAGX: You’ve been a supporter of local music for as long as I can remember. Tell us, what is HOMEGROWN?

That’s why when we took it over, we play as many different rock bands within one hour…that way everyone gets a shot…

HITMAN: HomeGrown focuses on Local Rock bands around RGV on 105.5 The X. I know how hard it is to get your name out there, I’m hoping that when bands are going to try to book gigs, they hear..”Oh Yeah! I’ve heard you on Homegrown! It’s a great advertising tool for bands around the valley... Plus it will help them get more fans!

MAGX: What bands are featured right now on your HOMEGROWN show on 105.5 THE X?

MAGX: How did the HOMEGROWN idea start? HITMAN: Do you remember the Island Rock Station? I think it was “The Valley’s Alternative” or “Pirate Radio”…can’t remember…I’ve even tried looking it up on the internet... But can’t find it for now…anyway... They started Homegrown... I always thought it was a great way to promote local music! It has been on other rock stations, I’m just happy it’s on ours now… MAGX: Do you remember the first band you ever interviewed on a HOMEGROWN show? HITMAN: That’s the thing..In the early days, we interviewed a band and played the music for the whole hour…I didn’t think that was fair for other bands..

HITMAN: One of my favorites of course is Black Tora and What doesn’t kill you. Both I think can rock with the big boys! Others bands are Brokenpoetz, Tracey’s Mend, Mars Overdrive, The Jericho Machine, Ram Danese, Never Buried, Black Noize... The list goes on and on.. MAGX: Are people digging them? HITMAN: I’m hoping so…I get a lot of requests for Black Noize and Brokenpoetz lately…Black Tora and What doesn’t kill you always gets calls also.

Corpus Christi.. MAGX: If a band wanted their song on HOMEGROWN, how would they go about getting featured there? HITMAN: They need to drop off a demo at 901 E. Pike Blvd in Weslaco or email me at hitman@1055thex.com there is also a link on www.1055thex. com

MAGX: What's your experience in radio?

MAGX: How do you think some of these local bands stack up to national bands?

HITMAN: I have been now in radio for over 25 years... Starting at 18 years old at KRGV 1290am... Then overseas at KUAM 94.7 in Guam, plus KIXY-FM in San Angelo... And many many years at B104, plus Kiss 106.3..now I’m the Morning Guy on 105.5 The X here and I do Afternoons on C101 in

HITMAN: Like I said earlier... There are a couple of bands that I can really see on major tours and having record deals and more! Not all demos get on Homegrown... it’s a process, some bands send me there demos, and they still need some work to go…and some just blow me away!

MAGX: In your opinion, what do you think is needed here in the RGV to help some of these bands go big? HITMAN: If you can get into a great studio, the sky is the limit.. Dave Grohl said it best though, go to the basics... reel to reel… great mics and great producers...you can’t record your demo on a simple recorder and think its gonna be gold…There are a couple of great studios in the Valley…I have sent some demos to major record labels..if I think they can make it, I will help them as much as I can… MAGX: Thanks for your support of local music HITMAN! Where can people get a hold of you if they have more questions? HITMAN: I always try to answer my emails, so just email me at hitman@1055thex.com .. I think the Valley has some great talent out there... Let’s promote it!! KQXX-FM www.1055thex.com KQXX-FM is BROADCASTING FM THE PAYNE STUDIOS featuring Rock Classic radio live from Mcallen, Tx at 1055thex.com

Welcome to the MAGX Ink Issue. We interviewed several tattoo shops this month so you can read about the shops close to you and make the best decision about who should put your life story on your skin. Remember, most shops have several artists working under their roof, so make sure to stop in and talk to the artists, browse their portfolios and ask all the questions so that when you are ready to get inked, you know you have the best person for the job you want done.

For those not as versed in tattooing as we are... Tattooing is an art form that uses one’s body as the canvas. It has been practiced worldwide since ancient times and despite certain taboos surrounding it, it has become very popular in modern culture. The word tattoo is derived from the Polynesian word "TATAU." Modern tattooing involves tattoo machines whose needle or needles rapidly pierce and insert ink under the skin. In olden times, a stick with a sharp piece of bone at the end was inserted into the ink and was tapped repeatedly over the area to insert the ink. Copyrighted tattoo designs that can be found on any tattoo studio’s wall are called FLASH. Flash is an easy way to get a beautiful tattoo design by some of the best artists in the biz, but you end up with a tattoo that many other people all over the world have as well. Many people prefer to work with a tattoo artist who can custom design a unique piece of art.

Choose carefully... Whatever path you decide to take with your tattoo, think it over carefully before jumping the gun. Remember, It’s on you for life so don’t take it lightly. 20 years from now, you might regret getting that portrait of Justin Beiber. Chances are you’ll regret it a lot sooner...

FLAMING HEART TATTOO STUDIO

SINNERS INK

624 North Closner Boulevard Edinburg, TX (956) 287-9777 www.flaminghearttattoo.com MAGX: What is the story behind your tattoo studio? How did it get started? CHRIS DE LEON: Flaming Heart tattoos has been around since 99 and is owned to this day by Kendall Tinker better known as Tink. I first got started there back in 2002 (fresh out of high school) when I was 18 yrs old and I've been working there since. It's had some respectful artists in there who have ventured out to start their own tattoo businesses today and it's been a stable shop since the beginning. I feel very fortunate to have been there for so long. MAGX: Do you still remember the first tattoo done in your shop? What was it? CDL: I suuuuuure do remember the first tattoo I ever did! It was a bullet with wings on the back of a leg. I actually have the picture lying around my parents house somewhere and it isn't the ugliest tattoo an untrained eye has seen, but it definitely is a "first" tattoo haha. My old work whether years ago or months ago always pushes me forward to stay on top of my game. I never want to get lazy when it comes to improvement because there are so many times that I've felt proud of when it comes to my work and the day I stop caring about progression is the day I stop tattooing. MAGX: Strangest Tattooing/ Piercing you have been

700 Alton Blvd, Alton, TX 78570 (956) 802-5898

asked to do? CDL: Flat out, thee weirdest tattoo I have ever done was about a year ago....I tattooed the word B*tch on a females butt cheek.... That’s not the weird part haha. So as I'm getting set up to do the tattoo, my clients boyfriend cracks a joke saying "you should put my balls under that haha" . I chuckeled and said that'd be pretty funny. He then says "I'm serious!", His gf who I’m about to tattoo turns her head to me and says "go ahead and do it, I got him by the balls anyway." haha I could not believe what I was hearing but I kept a professional face on and I said "all right, one pair of balls comin' up." AND it was her first tattoo. MAGX: What Advice would you give to someone getting their first tattoo? Any do’s and don’ts? CDL: Now a days the best advice I can give to any client is KNOW THE WORK IS GOOD. It doesn't even matter if it's a bad idea like getting a name tattooed on them or something they'll regret because of what society thinks. It's way more important to get the best quality you can in a tattoo. Like I said before, a lot of people shop around for the lowest price they can find. I’m not saying to pay for the most expensive price out there, but just know how good the artist is.

| 22 | MAGX

MAGX: How did your passion for tattooing start?

Joey: The ability to put a smile on someones face.

Joey: Kinda started funny. I was in a shop hanging out and I noticed a lot of things. I always had a passion for drawing and art so I thought to myself " Can I do what these guys are doing, only approaching it in a different manner. I have learn from my previous career about customer relations and I noticed that was not being addressed very well here. So I started doing a lot of research and I really got into the whole tattooing.

MAGX: If you weren’t a tattoo artist, what would you be?

MAGX: What Advice would you give to someone getting their first tattoo? Any do’s and don’ts? Joey: Really think about it. And make sure you get it from a reputable artist. Check out there portfolio and look for artwork that is similar to what they are looking for. I have seen a lot of tattoos that are really bad so be careful. Remember you are gonna have it for the rest of your life. MAGX: What are your favorite tattoos to do? Joey: Day of the Dead girls. I really dig them. And Black & Grey work. MAGX: What’s the best part of being a tattoo artist?

Not sure. Probably lost. MAGX: What is a typical day at the shop like? Joey: Open at 1pm. Its a fairly new shop so I am trying to build it up. But its been really good so far. Lots of return customers. MAGX: Have you ever turned down doing a tattoo or piercing? If so why? Joey: Yes. The usual...To young or under the influence. But as far as a tattoo, nothing has crossed my path that I won't do. MAGX: What sets you apart from other tattoo shops? Joey: I started a lot later in life than the normal artist so I would say I really have a true passion to become a good artist. I've always approached everything in life with the mentality that to become good at something you have to invest your whole body ,mind and soul into it. I’m not in it for the money. I truly enjoy the smiles I see on the faces of my clients.

CUSTOMS TATTOOS

1st CLASS TATTOOS

308 West 2nd Street Mercedes, TX 78570 (956) 565-1516 • www.customstattoos.com

MAGX: Do you still remember the first tattoo done in your shop? What was it? DAN HATE: It was a koi fish. The guy wanted to come in and get a koi fish on his forearm, and we ended up basically dominating his entire lower arm. That’s the way I wanted it, and that’s the way the guy let me do it, and he’s been a long time die-hard customer and I love it.

having a painting and throwing it into the trunk of a car and never showing it off.

MAGX: What is the story behind your tattoo studio? How did it get started?

MAGX: What Advice would you give to someone getting their first tattoo? Any do's and don'ts?

CREEP: After working almost 10 years @ Flaming Heart I decided to leave...My older brother Ernesto heard about this and he called me and asked if I wanted to open a shop...The rest is history!

DH: Right now it’s just me and Rafa, he’s got easily over fifteen years doing it, and myself (Dan Hate). Priscilla’s doing micro dermal piercings, surface piercings & jewelry.

DH: Just keep your mind very, very open. We’ve seen so much artwork that our eyes are completely open, our hearts are completely open and we’d love to do a tattoo that we haven’t seen or done before. If you’re going to pick something that somebody’s already gotten, or you’re going to pick something that you think is trendy and hip right now, you’ve got to understand that we’re artists. We’re not just trying to stamp everyone with the same tattoo.

MAGX: How did your passion for tattooing start?

MAGX: What are your favorite tattoos to do?

DH: I always wanted to be an art teacher, and when I started hanging out at tattoo shops, and getting to know the people that do them, I didn’t see myself doing anything else. I wanted to stop the world, and start learning to tattoo. And I took it as seriously I could when I first started and I’m glad I did because I got the practice that I needed, and I’m getting the practice that I need and I’ve been blessed to have my business for five years already.

DH: Photo color realism. It’s probably the hardest one to get good at, and the better at it you are, the more you stand out, so that’s what I try to strive for.

MAGX: How many Tattoo Artists / piercers working at your studio?

MAGX: Strangest Tattooing/ Piercing you have been asked to do? DH: The hidden tattoos. The ones that people don’t want others to see. It’s kind of like

519 East Schunior Street Edinburg, TX 78541 (956) 381-9091

MAGX: What other hobbies do you have? DH: When I feel like it, and when I absolutely must, I do paint. It’s so amazing that spent so long sketching with pencils and paper because I hardly ever sit and sketch anymore. Every time I come in the shop I get asked for something completely different than the day before so most of the art is done right there, on the spot.

MAGX: How did you pick the name for your tattoo studio? CREEP: This took a bit of time and thinking finally after 2 months we decided to call it 1st Class...We knew the name was important..Something we would have to live up to. MAGX: How many Tattoo Artists / piercers working at your studio? CREEP: Currently its me and Roy...Roy is also the piercer.. Ernesto helps out with customers and appt...etc MAGX: What Advice would you give to someone getting their first tattoo? Any do's and don'ts? CREEP: Take your time selecting your tattoo..Think how it will affect your profession, family, can you live with this tattoo for the rest of your life. MAGX: What are your favorite tattoos to do? CREEP: Cover ups are kool when you can help that customer cover up an ex's name ...feels good to help them out.

| 26 | MAGX

MAGX: Who are your tattooing influences? CREEP: I’ve had many influences from all art medias... Any artist who I meet can be influential. Back in late 90s I began helping out at Studio 13 with old man Pete. I learned a lot from him. MAGX: What’s the best part of being a tattoo artist? CREEP: I’ve met so many people...Some I’ve become life long friends. I'm a lucky guy MAGX: If you weren't a tattoo artist, what would you be? CREEP: A super hero....lol. I can't imagine being anything else except CREEP One (Tattoo artist, Dad, Badass lol) MAGX: Have you ever turned down doing a tattoo or piercing? If so why? CREEP: Some time back we had this customer who wanted me to tattoo all his face with this skull type design. My brother Ernesto and I looked at each other noticed this customer wasn’t joking. I explained to him that this tattoo might not be something he would like after few years. Customer remained persistent...I then offered to draw that design with Sharpie marker so he can see the feedback from the world. Shortly after he told us that he would come back...He never did. We want our customers business but I used my experience, good judgement and responsibility.
