SAVE THE BETTAS I’m pissed and I think I’m gonna start an organization. I was at Walmart the other day and we were getting some new rocks for our pet fish. His name is “Manji” and he is a Betta. We freed him from the evil clutches of a local Wal-Mart who obviously cares little about the LIVE or previously living animals it sells. You may have seen the little plastic cups they keep the Bettas in. They are tiny, overflowing with the fishes own excrement and usually stay on the shelf till someone buys them or they die from starvation or the unsanitary conditions of the 5 to 6 ounces of water it is forced to live in. Well my girlfriend and I were horrified as we passed by the aisle again. We see a lot of the little fish were swimming in basically a 6 oz. sewer. Several fish were dead and had obviously been dead for a long while. Others were on the brink of death. This probably happens at the thousands of Wal-Marts across the country as well as the thousands of pet stores. So we bought a few mini tanks they had for sale and bought six of the ones that were in the worst condition and brought them home. Now I have this idea in my head that we could do something about this. How is it not considered animal abuse? If Wal-Mart wants to sell LIVE animals, it should at least provide adequate conditions to keep them alive or stop carrying them completely. So I’m starting the SAVE THE BETTAS PROJECT. Maybe with the help of social media, we can get some laws changed or at the very least force these places to step up their efforts and provide better accommodations for these animals or stop carrying them. There will be more information coming soon. Stay Tuned! Meanwhile if you happen to be at Wal-mart and see mistreatment of bettas, take pics or video with your phone and report it to a manager. You’ll make a little fish’s day. Ramsey ramsey@magxonline.com For Advertising Call: 956-648-4464

If it’s tasty, If it’s cool, If it’s unique, you will find it here on MAGX approved eats. Every month we scour South Texas for the best places to eat and drink. This is one such place...

SCHNEIDER’S GERMAN GASTHAUS & BEER GARDEN 5507 N. Ware Rd, McAllen, TX (956) 242-0335 There is a really cool place hidden away on North Ware Rd. It’s Called Schneider’s German Gasthaus and Beer Garden and is a definite “must visit.” Schneider’s is a German eatery and serves up authentic and deli-

cious homemade German food. We tried several of the dishes and appetizers, and we loved it! Schneiders also features a cool patio area out back where you can sit under the stars and enjoy some tall glasses of cold beer and great, authentic German food with your friends. Next time you want to hit the town, instead of hitting the same old, same old, give Schneiders a try. They have a great thing going there. Oh, and GREAT BEER! GLAM METAL

I would always sleep over at my grandparent’s house every weekend and every summer just to listen to him drum to Motley Crue, ACDC, Megadeth, Poison, and his favorite, Metallica. - The Skeptic MAGX: How did you guys meet and decide to start up a band together? TS: Well, I remember meeting Izzy back in 08’ cause I used to play guitar at Sunrise Mall for fun and to make money. From there on we just started hanging out. Izzy and JJ had an old Thrash Metal band in 09’ that I joined towards the end of the band which is where I had met JJ from. He was the drummer for the other band as well. MAGX: Who came up with the name for the band? TS: No kidding… I was taking a dump. I called Izzy and he loved it! Haha! MAGX: I noticed you guys pay tribute to the music of old. How do you manage to stay faithful to the sound with so many new influences in the music scene? TS: As for me, I have loved 80s glam/ thrash metal ever since I could remember. I would always sleep over at my grandparent’s house every weekend and every summer just to listen to him drum to Motley Crue, ACDC, Megadeth, Poison, and his favorite, Metallica. I basically grew up listening to 80s glam/thrash. MAGX:. I have heard your music and you guys really mesh well together. Whose idea was it to go down this road regarding your sound? TS: I think a lot of the sound that comes out of us, has a lot to do with the way I make guitar parts. A lot of people have told me the music I make sounds good for video games. I agree… and the cool thing about that is that it actually sounds good played live. We all sing in the band, and that’s the

core to our genre! You need harmony! Without it, we’d sound like crap. It’s good to have vocals project with others. It only gets the crowd more into it. It also shows how experienced you are. MAGX: One thing I noticed about your music is endless guitar solos. The guitar work seems like the foundation for the band. Do you improvise that work on the spot or is it all designed? TS: When I make solos for the song, I improvise. The solo for “The Lost Child” was actually recorded on the spot. There was no “solo” to the song. I actually made that solo on the spot, while recording. As for live, I actually don’t improvise my solos, I improvise chords. I like to change things on the spot. You’ll never see me playing the same chord progressions to songs. It’s kind of weird but its true… MAGX: There are definite shades of glam/classic rock in your music along with other influences. What does it mean to you to go out and pay tribute to rock and roll the way you do? TS: It means so much to be able to pay tribute to my favorite bands by playing their music with all my heart. I enjoy it so much and wouldn't prefer to play anything else. Of course we have our originals to prove to people that the 80s glam sound is never going to die, but it never hurts to play a song that our style originated from. MAGX: What kind of response are you getting around the valley concerning the band? TS: Since I have been in the band the response we get from every crowd has | 9 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

been really great!!! I have honestly never gotten that much attention after a show or after a jam session. A big crowd reaction gives us the bigger energy to give you guys a better show than what you came for. Crowd reaction really means a lot to the way we perform. MAGX: Do you have everything planned out when you go on stage or is everything just up in the air? TS: Usually the only thing we have planned out is our set list. The one thing that is original and completely different at every show is our stage presence. Just like kevin said “ Everyone gets a different show, every time.” (TS: The music is mostly planned ahead of time. Of course, there is always a chance of throwing a new song out there when the mood strikes us. And the antics are partially rehearsed, and some are thought up on the way to the show, and some just come up on the spot. MAGX: I think you guys sound awesome, and you defiantly know the path you are trailblazing. What can we expect from “The Skeptic” in the next couple of years? TS: In the next couple of years, you can sure as hell see us jamming with bigger bands. Maybe not the biggest… but bigger indeed. I’ve always had a great feeling about this band and I’ve always worked hard to make things sound as best as possible. You can ask anyone I’ve worked with, I can be really mean during practice. But the reason for that is because I don’t like slackers. If you work with me, you’re in it , cause you’re in it! MAGX: The song, “The Lost Child,” has

GLAM METAL

Photo By: Kevin Martinez MAGX: If you had to pick someone to go on tour with, who would it be? TS: If its big bands you guys are talking about, I personally would say Mötley Crüe. Those guys are pretty amazing… We all know that! Plus, Mick Mars from Mötley Crüe is one of my favorite guitarists, so I’d love to be able to play on the same stage as him. If it’s a local band – Black Tora. Pure Metal… Enough said. MAGX: Do you have any plans on releasing a full-length album? TS: Oh of course! We’re working hard on releasing our first EP by the end of the summer. From there on, I guess we’ll pray to soon get a record deal. MAGX: Who writes the lyrics for the songs you put out?

a real epic and grandiose feel to it. What is behind the meaning of the song? TS: “The Lost Child” was our first original ever as The Skeptic. I wrote the intro to the song and Izzy had recorded it cause he really, really liked it. We finished the music and quickly added lyrics and that was it. The song speaks of a man who his whole life has been a rebel and is basically telling his story to others. MAGX: How do you think the masses/ fans are treating the bands in the local scene? TS: The local scene today has changed a lot from a couple of years back. Today,

young listeners have favoritism in what they like to hear. EVERYONE HAS GONE MODERN… and that’s like, “No…just no.” The genre, looks, and even attitude has changed. Shit even what used to be known as “Moshing” has changed. Who the fuck started the “Aerobics” trend in a mosh? Seriously, now when you go out to a show, all you see is people working out and kicking… That’s how sad it is now. To finally answer your question, I think not all bands get the proper reaction when heard. People are now used to today’s music that they just don’t bother to listen to something different. They just walk off. Sometimes its really hard for some bands to play live. People just don’t support anymore… Favoritism man… Favoritism. | 10 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

TS:I write the roots of all our music… I usually start composing at home and bring what I’ve got to the guys to listen to. From there on the rest of the band contributes to the music. Once the music is done, I start to write lyrics at home. I bring my ideas to the guys the next practice, and from there on the song worked on until completed. MAGX: I noticed you guys just performed at Simon Sez, in McAllen, Texas not too long ago. What part of the RGV do you enjoy performing at the most? TS: Simon Sez is a great venue! Both the crowd and management there are really, really amazing! It’s one of the best places you could play to get a bit of recognition. We’ve never encountered any rude people there. I really recommend that venue for any uprising band who is taking their career with music seriously. As for where it is that we like playing the most… we don’t have a preferred place we like to play at.

Adversity Breeds Malice,a Mcallen industrial/progressive band, recently won the Cinco de Mayo battle of the bands competition at Peace and Coffee in May of 2012. The group is made up of Ernesto Salcedo and Victor Salmeron on guitar, Pablo Saldaña on Bass and Frank Calderon on drums; who claim their music to be a vast array of audible pleasures. I am here to get to know the group a little more, and see what’s next on their horizon in the RGV. BY: NIKKY CHAOS

MAGX: When did the band first form, and what were you're plans for it?

mindedness & perseverance is our motivation.

ABM: We started back in our Elementary years. You know, somewhere along the lines of Fall 2011. Our plans are & have always been to make a solid living out of this.

MAGX: What was the band’s first concert experience? Do you remember how you all felt once the concert was over?

MAGX: How did the band get the name Adversity Breeds Malice? ABM: When you create music that's not "formulaic" or "trendy" (adversity) you create tension for being different (breeds malice)! MAGX: What are the bands musical and non-musical inspirations? ABM: The band's cumulative inspirations, musically at least, amass a great deal of artists. Anything from Yanni to Necrophagist makes us swoon. Open

ABM: We were all highly anxious & curious as to how people would perceive us as a band, being that we chose to remain instrumental. After it all went down, we knew we had made a favorable choice. MAGX: What's the most bizarre thing to happen while you were onstage? ABM: The Bizarre Interstellar Graveyard. No. Literally 20 measures, into said song, Frank's drumstick broke & casually landed inside Pablo's hand. All while performing. MAGX: What's the hardest thing about being in a band? | 18 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

ABM: Finding a consistent practice space that won't land you in jail. Literally. true story. No Comment. MAGX: What is your stance on how to get the public to support "Live music" and see the shows? Any ideas? ABM: Promotion plays an important role, (social networking, texting, flyers, etc.), but word of mouth can go a very long way. MAGX: What can people expect to see at your live performance, and when will the next one be? ABM: We've got two upcoming gigs until we finish our EP, July 14th at the Spark Plug Pool Hall in Edinburg and August 18th at Cine El Rey in McAllen. Expect to see us sweat profusely so bring a towel.
