LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

THE INAGURAL ISSUE As I was putting together this inaugural issue, I pored over a million gorgeous Indian wedding images which sparked a vivid flashback to the weekend I got engaged. Sparkly new ring and all, I rushed to the hotel gift shop and proceeded to buy every single wedding magazine I could get my hot little hands on. I had never opened one before that fateful day, and I had waited 31 years for the surprise. I spent about a hundred dollars on the magazines (something my mother still brings up to this day!) and then headed to the pool to cozy up with my new best friends. After a few hours of pouring through them, much to my dismay, I was disappointed and bored. Although the weddings, dresses, and ideas were beautiful, none of them spoke to the South Asian bride. I thought it was absurd that the only mention included in this stack of magazines was a quarter sized image of a tikka.

I longed for a magazine especially for Maharanis...just...like...me. Fueled by this wish some three plus years ago, I launched MaharaniWeddings.com to serve as the ultimate wedding guide to brides just like me. Each year Maharani grows and evolves and I am very proud to share our first Maharani Weddings E-magazine. Completely free for our community, it’s a collection of wedding ideas & inspirations cultivated specifically for the Indian bride. From destination to fusion, Sri Lankan to Bengali, Laguna Beach to Atlanta; it’s a hand selected collection of South Asian weddings, each with the exquisite beauty and the unique traditions of a Maharani Wedding that I hope inspires a whole new generation of brides. So, let’s toast to the newest place for Maharanis and let the beauty begin. Wishing you a glorious wedding day and everyday….

EYES

2

Every Maharani needs to learn this trick! To get the perfect rimmed look, dip the tip of a black eyeliner pencil into gel liner and then apply to your waterline. This will give you a jet black liner and also prevent liner from smudging or fading.

3 4

1

To remove eye makeup at night, soak a cotton disc pad with your favorite remover, like Bi-Facil by Lancôme, and press onto lashes for 30 seconds to 1 minute. The eye makeup and false lashes will come off instantly, without any tugging to your delicate eye area.

Always use waterproof eyeliners, mascaras, and waterproof lash glue. Using waterproof products lets you enjoy the emotions of the day, and allows photographers to be able to capture all the glamour without having black streaming liner or lashes sliding down your face.

Brides who get puffy, oily, or creases around the eyes should use Clarins Eye Revive Beauty Flash. This product can be used as an eye cream the night before to reduce puffiness. It can also be used as an eye primer, worn under concealer, to avoid sinking concealer into crease lines when applying makeup. Eyes will appear brighter and the skin area will look refreshed and smooth. Improving the staying power of your eye makeup.

34

maharani weddings | summer 2012

5

Using eye brightening drops before applying your makeup will reduce the redness in eyes caused by wedding week tiredness and stress. Just remember to apply drops before your foundation to ensure that your

makeup stays picture perfect!

FOUNDATION LIPS

6 7

Every Maharani should regularly exfoliate her lips! Take a toothbrush, a wet wash cloth, or a bit of your favorite facial scrub and use round circular motions with light pressure.

11

Always, always, always, apply a primer to your face before your foundation and concealer. Primer ensures your foundation and concealer will glide on smoothly, as opposed to settling into your fine lines. Plus, it gives your makeup maximum staying power, so you will look flawless from morning to midnight!

"One of the biggest

Did you know that dry lips often suck up the texture of your lipstick which reduces the color and makes your lipstick fade after a half hour or so?! Apply a hydrating lip balm before to ensure your lip color looks flawless on your big day. Apply lip balm onto lips after foundation application; while you work on your eyes the lip balm will be hydrating your lips!

8 9

mistakes I see is foundation blended incorrectly.

To keep lipstick fixed and locked into lips, first apply a matching lip liner all over your lips. Apply lipstick on top of lip liner, and remember to use a lip brush for a flawless finish. This will help lock in the lip color and keep your lips looking their best for hours and hours! Brides usually worry about their lipstick fading through their special day, especially reds. Buy a small screw cap pot, easily found at any drug or M.A.C. store, and ask your makeup artist to scoop out a tiny bit of lipstick into the pot, so you can touch up with a lip brush later on in the day.

10

To add volume and fullness to your lips, apply cream highlighter with a brush outside the top lip line. This will attract light. For a little extra oomph, add a touch of gloss to the center of the top and lower lips!

36

maharani weddings | summer 2012

"

12

To blend foundation, use a foundation brush and blend from the center of your face outwards. Don’t forget to check the area around your neck to ensure it is properly blended, otherwise you will be left with a telltale line. If you set your foundation with a touch of loose powder and a bit of Skindinavia setting spray your makeup will last twice as long.

13 14

For the ultimate glowing complexion prep your skin with the right primer. Use a hydrating primer on cheeks and around the perimeters of your face, and a silicone based, shine control primer on your T-zone. Treat your face according to the texture of your skin, which may not be the same all over your face.

To get a dewy complexion, add a drop of essential oil to your foundation.

LUSTROUSLOCKS

15

Beauty starts from the inside out! To get shiny, lustrous locks, eat a ton of dark green leafy veggies 2 months before your wedding. Vegetables such as spinach, bok choy, and broccoli are great sources of vitamins A and C which are essential in producing sebum – the natural oils for your scalp, and a built in conditioner for your hair!

BONUS: Sprinkle a pinch of ground flax seed onto your foods once a day to ensure a shiny mane!

16

Remember to use a deep conditioning treatment every week for 2 months before your wedding. This will ensure that your hair will look its best and prevent it from drying out.

www.maharaniweddings.com

37

WEDDINGDAY

17

Increase your fiber and water intake at least 3 weeks prior to your wedding. After a few days of cocktail parties your diet can take a turn for the worse, but if you maintain 9 glasses of water a day and a high fiber diet (aim for 30 grams), you will ensure your body is flushing out all the toxins, minimizing breakouts and puffy skin.

18

The healthier your skin, the less make-up you will need to wear. If you cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice a day, you will notice the less foundation and concealer you will need to wear. Also, remember to exfoliate your skin weekly. Exfoliating helps get rid of dull skin cells, revealing fresh new ones. For maximum results, use a facial mask after exfoliating.

19

Brides are under a lot of pressure, lighting, and fluctuating environmental conditions (hot or cold, indoor or outdoor) on their big days. Therefore, your skin will release oil, causing shine on the surface. No matter how much the oils have been blocked with skin preps and primers, shine will appear at some point. Instead of patting down your face with tissues which can build up bacteria, apply a mattifying powder with your clean fingers. Urban Decay’s De Slick In A Tube or M.A.C.’s Multipurpose Mattifying Gel is very handy when unwanted shine appears. And, it can also be used as a primer under foundation.

20

Do not try drastic diets in the months approaching your wedding. Maintain a steady exercise regime and a healthy diet. Extreme dieting can wreak havoc on your skin and most importantly the way you feel.

"Indian Weddings are filled with beauty, vibrant colors and love. The display of closeness of the families and the expression of love for one another is so moving. The jewelry is divine with brides draped in gold, adorned in colorful extravagant gowns, and the horse. The whole experience seems like a fairytale, and oh so surreal. Oh, and the dancing! By far our favorite part of an Indian wedding is the dancing - an entire wedding is packed on the dance floor and you can't help but be moved by the emotion and the music. Wait, did we mention the food? Always a colorful culinary experience full of beautiful dishes and spices - we are fans."

What we love about Indian weddings? The music and dancing! We love the way they embrace music and dancing and always find a way to infuse it into their celebration. Indian music just makes you want to dance, regardless of age, race, or religion! It brings everyone together – older relatives, friends, guests, and even little kids – and what a perfectly joyous way to celebrate the union of two people! It’s such a burst of energy and a whirlwind of vibrant colors! If only all weddings could give you such an adrenaline high! And of course, it won't be a party without the groom making his grand entrance on an elephant! How majestically charming!

FRI FORJINDAM Founder/Editorial Director Wedding Nouveau weddingnouveau.com

“I can describe my unapologetic reaction to just about every Indian wedding in one word: Delicious! Seriously, I can't single out just one thing, because it's the entire experience: multiple days of celebration beginning with the Sangeet, the insanely rich amount of traditions, the "come hither" make up, Lenghas for days, Sarees galore, embroidered obsessions, banquets of garlands and good food...all those things make for one entirely delicious gumbo of inspiration. But if I truly must pick "one thing I love most about Indian weddings" I'd have to say it's the bling. No matter how lavish or how intimate the affair, each meticulously placed nose ring, bangle, ankle bracelet, belly chain, toe ring or neck bling transforms each bride from a modern maiden to a work of art. Whether the jewels are gifts, loans or heirlooms, no two brides are ever the same and it always shows in how lusciously they radiate.” www.maharaniweddings.com

Love should always be celebrated with

no expense spared. CATHLEYA SCHROECKENSTEIN Editor in Chief Weddingbee weddingbee.com

“Take a traditional American wedding and think: how can we make this MUCH more colorful and lavish? Those sweet, subdued smiles from the bride and groom---let's kick that up to unabashed glee and an unrelenting celebratory atmosphere. And one evening? Hardly enough! Let's make this a three day affair. A wedding is a celebration of arguably the most important milestone in two people's lives: the day they commit themselves to one another; to creating a family. The thing I love most about Indian weddings is that the celebration of this most amazing milestone is always recognized in incredible magnitude. Because love SHOULD always be celebrated with no expense spared. 78

“There are so many things I love about Indian weddings, from the jewelry to the horse to the dancing, and the sense of tradition and family feel utterly tangible. But (and this may come as no surprise, given my love for inspiration boards) the thing I love most of all about Indian weddings is the COLOR. Bold and unapologetic color. Red and gold, of course, but also tangerine and teal, aqua and poppy, fuchsia and lime. Most of us aren't surrounded by color like this in our daily lives, and such vibrant hues create a space and experience that stands apart. Plus, I don't think it's possible to dress yourself and a venue from head to toe in coral and amethyst (or magenta and marigold, or any combination of brilliant colors) without wanting to celebrate, and that's really what weddings are all about.
