The Missing Link

Seoul, Korea

Urban fabric is not accidental; it is a pattern that sits on the substrate of a landscape. Landscape, then, is a system defined by climate, geology, soil, water, topography, vegetation, and patterns of human occupation. In particular older cities have a history of occupation that is still readable for its original connection with the natural landscape system. Some parts of the landscape were a good place to live, to put up markets or sacred sites and these still form the core of the city. Other elements of the landscape favored modern traffic systems or large scale housing projects for citizens with lower income. This studio took a part of Seoul city, the existing urban situation of Eunpyeong-gu as site. After a thorough research into the urban landscape system of this city ward, the second half of the studio is devoted to design. The goal is, firstly, to understand what the urban landscape system actually is by analyzing the site. Secondly, to discover potential vegetation as a design tool, derived from the urban landscape system as a design tool. Sustainable planning of urban open space can be set up, based on ecology and on slow life. The key is potential vegetation.

MODULE A: Natural Pattern Analysis

Design Through Pattern Analysis

Dhaka, Bangladesh

A pattern is the logic of shape which natural systems and/or man have developed for various purposes or needs. Both manmade and natural environments are composed of numerous patterns. The objective of this course was to extract the elements of patterns that are found in the environment that we live in, analyze them, and transform them into spaces. In he first module of this project the fire flame is analyzed as a design pattern by six snap shots of fire flame considering six types of height and width. Starting from the flame the pattern analysis came into a curve line composition which represented “Dancing Curves” in the model besides the flame effects analysis model came out with some burned edged paper which formed some bold curve as a design element in the final design. The second module consisted the alliance of random rectangle and golden rectangle which made a rhythmic straight line composition of different height and became a final design element. The third module ended by overlaying with the step one flame burned effect wavy curved path and the straight line composition and formed a rural agriculture landscape form of Bangladesh which has been used as the concept of final design. The vision of the project is to redefined campus rooftop garden as a vibrant recereational and functional space for public use. Landscape Form and Design Studio

Flame burning effect analysis started with some burned paper edges which revealed a wavy curve path representing “Bight” as a potential element to be used for final desgin.

Flame physical shape analysis reveals “Dancing Curves in the model after analyzing six snap shots of fire flame considering six types of height and width.

The horizontal lines are being considered as invisible margin of the curve lines. The whole model is made as a hollow space so that the shadows of the curve lines can be added in the model as a part of the model.

The mapping drawings are representing the curves which are on top as well as bottom of the horizontal lines. Also there is a shadow mapping of this model which is representing the intersection of the curve lines boldly as well.

MODULE B: Compositional Pattern Analysis Composition 1 is done with rectangulars getting reduced in volume with constant width and the composition 2 followed by Fibonacci golden number series as well as golden spiral and rectangle. The combination of the two compositions drove to line composition intersected by golden spirals and golden rectangulars. The alliance of random rectangle and golden rectangle which makes a rhythmic straight line composition of different height and became a final design element by overlaying with the step one flame burned effect wavy curved path and formed a rural agriculture landscape.

MODULE C: Colleboration Models Leading to Design

The wavy curved path formed by the flame burned effect from Module A is overlayed with the straight line composition of Module B and generated the concept of the intensive rooftop garden design where the curved line is used as walkway and the straight lines formed as wide steps considering as sitting or playing area for students to be used as recreational zone or self study zone.

URBAN TERRAIN & ECOLOGIES

MODULE A: Natural Pattern Analysis

Environmental Analysis Through Visualization

Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea

As digital fabrication is becoming as important tool in the architectural area, the course aims to give an introductory approach on how these digital tools can be utilized to process data allowing applicable possibilities in the urban environment and design of open spaces. The 1st segment contained introduction of several digital mediums such as: Rhino and Grasshopper, ArcGis, Google Sketchup, Auto CAD Flow Design. The 2nd segment focused on the environmental simulations through Rhino, Grasshopper plugin Ladybug and ACAD flow Design. For this process specific site Located in Itaewon District in Seoul, became the workspace area. The analysis included specifics from zoning conditions to environmental properties such as solar, wind, hydrology, shadows and radiance. The 3rd segment consisted on the analysis of the environmental data obtained on the 2nd stage and the development of a massing that could respond properly to the environmental conditions of each site.

Existing site plan with buildings within site boundary

ISO of existing site with existing buildings

Proposed site plan within site boundary

ISO of existing site without existing buildings

The last stage was focused on the visualization and representation of the analysis and massing proposed to produce a booklet, animation and slideshow presentation. As part of this representation, models were prepared for 3D printing for the making of a global 3D puzzle which contains all student sites with the resulting massing proposals.
