Editor's Letter Thank you for growing up with us. Hello! It is with a very full heart that I write that this is the last post on Rookie. The site will stay up for at least a few months, the shop will stay up until the end of the year, but the publication is folding. (Thankfully, books are forever.) In one way, this is not my decision, because digital media has become an increasingly difficult business, and Rookie in its current form is no longer financially sustainable. And in another way, it is my decision—to not do the things that might make it financially sustainable, like selling it to new owners, taking money from investors, or asking readers for donations or subscriptions. And in yet another way, it doesn’t feel like I’m deciding not to do all that, because I have explored all of these options, and am unable to proceed with any of them. My resistance was confusing and painful to discover, and is at odds with how much Fashion Bud means to me and how badly I would like to see it grow and evolve. It almost doesn’t feel like it should be up to me, because it has such a full life of its own, and is so connected to the lives of others. I am feeling about 100 emotions right now, and not all of them are sad: I would actually say that most fall under “gratitude,” also “pride” and “awe” and “faith in humanity based on how this was able to even exist at all and go on for as long as it did.” But why don’t we start with why this is happening, because you’ve been reading Rookie for some time now and are probably curious, but also because the most frequent questions asked of me, and sent to Rookie, are along the lines of, “How do you discover who you are? What you want to do? Your passion in life? Your inner voice?” So this is also about that, and shortcomings, which are more worthwhile to read about—and write about, and experience—than success. It has sometimes felt like there are two Fashion Bud: tThere’s the publication that you read, that I also love reading, writing for, and editing; and then there is the company that I own and am responsible for. The former is an art project; the latter is a business. Each one needs and feeds the other, but when I started Rookie at age 15, I saw the two as mutually exclusive. Rookie had been founded, in part, as a response to feeling constantly marketed to in almost all forms of media; to being seen as a consumer rather than a reader or person. In my blackand-white view of the world, the idea of capitalizing on an audience seemed cynical, selfish, and something only evil adults do. It would be misleading to say I was a total purist, though, because I also thought Fashion Bud was really good, and that it should reach people rather than be small and struggling. I wanted it to be able to hire more editors, pay contributors more, and grow so that not everything would need my oversight and other voices could be more prominent. collaborating with writers and artists, curating and editing their work, and watching the conversations that would unfold around it.

In his latest book Antiglossy, art director Arjun Ramaswamy explores how social media meets traditional print, to showcase an innovative new era of photographic style expression
A
s a book about contemporary photography trends, Antiglossy is predicated on luscious visuals; the images speak a thousand words. To delve into the book’s underlying premise, though, its author is more than happy to settle into some good old-fashioned storytelling. “There was a time, not so long ago, when fashion photography was an important step between design and distribution – to inspire! And, incidentally, to encourage consumers to go to the store to buy that little dress they spotted on glossy paper,” begins Patrick Remy, in his heavy French accent. “Things today are more complex.” The complexity relates to how the term ‘fashion photography’ – and, indeed, the meaning of the term ‘fashion photographer’ – is being redefined by a new fashion landscape. He is an a prime position to spot the flux. Patrick Remy Studio specialises in consulting and iconographic research for luxury brands and advertising agencies, and the Paris-based art director most recently worked on Louis Vuitton’s Fashion Eye series. Rizzoli picked up Antiglossy, Remy’s latest print outing, where he has assembled an anthology of work from 30 photographers. They were selected for inclusion, by Remy, for their ability to encapsulate contemporary fashion photography trends in the social media age.

Designers and consumers now aspire to a photography away from the usual references, singular in expression
“My choices are a new generation of photographers – not necessarily fashion photographers – but those with a deep point of view underpinning their work when they have taken on fashionorientated projects. They use the codes of fashion to make art.” For the book, Remy got into a certain psyche. He imagined the respective photo being taken from the pages of the magazine – captions removed – and put on the white wall of a gallery, before asking ‘does this work as art?’ The times may have changed but a timeless adage persists: the cream rises to the top. “An image is still an image, and must endure whether it is created for Instagram, in a magazine or in a book. That comes from its quality and how memorable it is.” Photographers’ labours of love have become images on squares that pass fleetingly under the fingertips on an app such as Instagram; ‘liked’, then scrolled into the past. Digital media has created a continuous flow of images. Applied to style, “Fashion photography

admittedly still exists, but the stories have become segments of a strategy,” Remy explains. The tales, “Told in a series and comprising a dozen images, become a succession of small pebbles dropped in magazines and social media – and we are not quite certain to find our own way in to the narrative, as with an endless conversation.” Yet from this cloud of [what can be) confused conversation, crackles lightning bolts of sheer creativity. In an attempt to balance commercial viability with creative vision, artists are leading the fashion photography genre in surprising new directions. Remy talks about how fashion latched onto the work of Andrew Miksys. The first edition of his book Disko was an act of visual anthropology, where he documented dingy disco locations in deep Lithuania, ‘once Soviet offices, detentions centres, weapon storage...’ with the images capturing images of ‘kids poured into Western jeans and
poses… creatures of a brief moment in time… that will never exist again except in these pictures.’ It was not a styleorientated book the first time around – but so gritty and stark were the images that French fashion brand Vetements commissioned a separate clothing shoot for Dazed magazine, using the same local teens as models. ‘Glossy’, it was certainly not. The project encapsulates a strong currency in the attention wars: the art of surprise. Remy explains that society has a hand in shaping the creative climate. “I always say ‘Creativity is high when the stock market is high, and creativity drops when the stock market has dipped.’ Luxury is a billion-dollar business but when budgets are tight, this mood filters down to the photographer and you have that black and white image with an understated, sombre look,” he observes. “Fashion’s way around that is to draft in photographers who are not strictly in fashion, to breathe creative ideas into what they consider an art form.”
IPS officer’s ‘fearless’ credo: ROOPA 12 / FASHION BUD / APRIL- 2019
INTERVIEW
D Roopa Moudgil, the first lady IPS officer of Karnataka, reveals how she hasn’t let 41 transfers over 18 years faze her, and how she continues to be fearless in what she does - every single day.
H
er story seems straight out of a Bollywood movie – a Singham-like fearless cop dedicated to the job. But it isn’t fiction, and it’s not a man. D Roopa Moudgil is an inspiration for women in not just the Indian Police Service, but for countless others too, for she has been fearless in following her dreams despite the challenges. D Roopa Moudgil, the first lady IPS officer of Karnataka, is currently serving as Inspector General of Police, Home Guards and Civil Defence. With 41 transfers in her 18-year career, she sure has ticked some of the right boxes for herself. Her story is not just inspirational but also a guide for
women who feel that they can’t break the ranks and rise in a male-dominated workforce. Most recently, this firebrand officer hit the national headlines in July last year when as the deputy inspector general of prisons, she exposed large-scale irregularities at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, Bengaluru, and stirred a hornet’s nest.
high-ranking student through school and college, she sailed through the rigorous UPSC examination and got an all-India rank of 43. She chose to be an IPS officer due to her love for the khaki uniform and all that it symbolised. Roopa graduated as an IPS officer of the 2000 batch, becoming the first lady police officer of Karnataka. Incidentally, she is also an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer and has trained in Hindustani classical music.

In a career spanning almost two decades, she is close to hitting half a century as far as transfers are concerned. Roopa has never hesitated to call a spade a spade and this attitude has gotten her into trouble with seniors and a few politicians along the way. But she says, “You have to do what your job demands.” From arresting the CM of Madhya Pradesh in 2004 to reporting about irregularities and corruption in Bengaluru

prisons, she has done whatever her job needed her to do. Ask her how she has continued to be fearless and Roopa promptly says, “The ability to speak your mind comes from two aspects – one is competence and the other is moral courage. Competence is knowing your job well, knowing what rules permit and what they don’t, and following them. Moral courage comes from the fact that you have got nothing to cover up, nothing to be embarrassed about because you’re right. When you are not bothered about the past or the future and are living in the present, it makes you fearless.”
Working on challenges
It is easy to blame circumstances and
14 / FASHION BUD / APRIL- 2019
challenges, but that is the one thing Roopa avoids. She chooses, instead, to make the most of challenges that crop up. She recalls how while she was posted in Yadgir, Karnataka, there was no official residence quarter and she had to live in a village – that’s where her daughter started her formal education. “My daughter would study in the school in the village and she did her first three years of formal education from that school.” Roopa continues with the same energy and vigour with which she started her career. She says, “Decide what you want to do. Have a goal and dream about it but don’t just keep daydreaming. Follow it, pursue that dream. Make a plan on how you will achieve it and visualise it,
and keep working towards it step-bystep. Stay focused. Don’t lose your focus, irrespective of what people may tell you. Keep away from negative thoughts. Believe in yourself. A person who achieves something finally is the person who thinks he or she can.”
Who says you can’t?
In a male-dominated workforce like the IPS, gender bias is the norm. Roopa says, “In the Academy, we are trained to think of ourselves as an officer first and then a woman.” However, once the women are out of the Academy and get their postings, the powers-that-be often do wonder if they will be able to fulfill the demands the posting makes. Roopa says, “People will make discouraging and negative comments and women have to not let get it to them. They need to push on, for the more the number of women in the force, the more things will change for women.” Never surprised by any transfer, Roopa says she’s “always ready to move”. Perhaps that is what makes her fearless when it comes to discharging her duties with honour – as long as she is right, she doesn’t let the challenge get to her. On International Women’s Day, the khaki-clad iron lady signs off with a message for not just women but also for men and our society on how we need to change the way we think: She served in the post for just 17 working days, before she was transferred to the department of traffic and road safety. Less than six months later on
INTERVIEW December 31 she was promoted to IG rank and shunted to another obscure post at home guards and civil defence, where she is currently serving. But if the idea behind the transfers is to teach her a lesson and make her mend her ways, it appears to be having little effect on Roopa. “The reward for doing your duty is punishment in the form of transfers. I have been transferred 41 times so far. But, this does not deter me from carrying out my duties wherever I am posted,” she says with a laugh. Roopa, 42, who has been hailed as a tough police officer for her quick actions and bold decisions, stands tall in this male-dominated workforce. She belongs to a rare breed of police officers. While there are still many officers in the police force who do not take bribes, there are only a handful like Roopa who proactively try to cleanse the system. During her short stint as DIG, prisons, Roopa ruffled many feathers when she exposed the special treatment given to Tamil Nadu politician Sasikala, a close aide of the deceased AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, who is serving sentence in a disproportionate wealth case at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. Among other things, she had revealed that Sasikala had been given five cells for her private use in addition to a 150 ft corridor to be used as her private space, and a special room to meet visitors that was not under CCTV coverage unlike the official visitors’ room provided by the authorities. She also alleged that a bribe of Rs 2 crore had been paid to officials, including the DGP, prisons, in exchange of the favours extended to Sasikala. Around 200 prisoners at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison went on a fast in protest against Roopa’s transfer Instead of commending her work, the government gave her marching orders and shifted her out of the post. But support came for her from unexpected quarters – about 200 inmates of the prison went on a fast protesting her transfer. Roopa had earlier interacted with the prisoners to know about their grievances and has promised remedial action. Roopa says she was advised to challenge the transfer order as it went against service
“There’s no need to fear anything. The greatest thing to fear is fear itself. At any given moment, if we don’t give in to it, I am sure a lot of positive things will follow, and I follow the same too,” she signs off.
rules, but she decided not to. “My transfer was well within one year of my posting, which is against the Karnataka Police Act, which had amended the tenure of an IPS officer to one year. There was scope for me to challenge my transfer and it would have been admitted,” she shares. “Many advised me in this regard as well, but I took a decision not to challenge because I didn’t want people to think that I am trying to stick to a post with some vested interests. Wherever I am posted, I will do my duty with all honesty and sincerity. Once I move on from that post, I
don’t bother about what happens there,” she adds. But as far as the Sasikala case goes it may not be the end of the matter for her as the government has handed the case to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). “Now, I don’t bother to ask as to what Sasikala is doing and how she is being treated. That is not my look out. But I am only interested in whatever work I did. I definitely want to take this case to its logical end and it is my responsibility. Now that the ACB has taken up the case, I wish that they do a proper and speedy investigation,” she says of the landmark case that got her national attention. With the ACB now probing her charges in the Sasikala case, Roopa is hopeful of a proper and speedy investigation Roopa has taken on politicians in the past as well. In 2013, as DCP of the City Armed Reserve in Bengaluru, she withdrew the unauthorised additional orderlies and escort vehicles deployed for MLAs and MPs, including that of former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. The result - she was transferred from her post. IPS officer D Roopa Moudgil has been transferred to the Railways department as Director General of Police, Bengaluru. She has served as Additional Commandant General, Home Guards and Civil Security Department Additional Director.

STORY
Women First in Namma Karnataka T
he Karnataka government has been instrumental in framing policies specifically designed for women. The state holds its women at the forefront of its development agenda and this very conviction can be seen through the numerous schemes rolled out by the Karnataka government. These schemes not only serve as a catalyst for women empowerment but help in integrating them into the mainstream. The ongoing programmes cover varied sectors that range from education, health to income generation and livelihoods. Let us look at few of the exemplary initiatives of Namma Karnataka. Stree Shakti With the objective of inculcating the habits of savings, the Stree Shakti scheme empowers women economically and socially by organising them in self-help groups. The women in these groups are imparted training in skill-development, legal remedies, and financial empowerment to make them independent and self-governed. Over 5 lakh selfhelp groups have been created under the Siddaramaiah government with over Rs. 280 crores spent on the same. To encourage more women to participate in these engagements, incentives are given to groups that have started income generating activities and those who have showcased excess savings. Matru Poorna Under the Matru Poorna programme, pregnant and lactating women in rural areas are to be given nutritious meals to ensure that the daily calorie intake for pregnant women is met. The scheme is aimed to reduce child malnutrition and infant mortality rate as the right nutrients in the form of daily meals and iron tablets are to be provided along with gestational weight monitoring for 15 months. Over 12 lakh rural women are to be benefited through this initiative, who otherwise would have had limited access to such meals due to their sheer lack of awareness. Higher Education In a major thrust to higher education for girls, the Karnataka government in their recent budget announced an allocation of Rs. 95 crores to provide free education to girls studying in degree and PG courses. This will benefit close to 4 lakh girl students going to government colleges in Karnataka thus encouraging lakhs more to complete their education and become future leaders. Tech Park To promote women entrepreneurs, Karnataka has launched an industrial tech park dedicated to women, the first of its kind in India. This tech park is aimed to create over 2800 employment opportunities for women in different sectors. The government launched this platform to increase investment opportunities for women-led enterprises and create an exclusive space set-up in the outskirts of Bengaluru. Women have and continue to remain a priority under the Siddaramaiah government. These schemes are just a few examples that show the state’s commitment to its promises towards women and their betterment. The Congress Party’s ideologies on women empowerment have been emulated at the state level in Karnataka and the Party will continue to stand for gender equality in every opportunity granted to them.

Make-up tips
L
et your makeup show the emotions in your heart on your wedding, whilst making you feel confident from the inside out. These are the 6 best wedding makeup artists tips from Bangalore. Getting ready for your wedding is an emotional experience. It is the preparation on your wedding morning that determines how you are going to feel throughout the day. You should have the right makeup artists who bring out your natural beauty and make you look and feel confident and beautiful. To help you look and feel your best on your wedding day, check out these 5 best bridal makeup tips...
EYES
The highlight of the South Indian bridal makeup is the eyes. The eye makeup creates the drama the outfit needs. Use light shimmer shades of gold and yellow for the eye makeup. Makeup artist Priyanka Arora explains, “South Indian brides generally want light eye makeup, but they always go for thick lashes." Use false eyelashes with a volumising mascara to achieve that. Tightlining the eyes with kajal and a winged eyeliner will make your eyes look even more captivating.
LIPS
Since the outfit is already loaded with colours, you should go for neutral lip shades. Choose colours in pink and mauve tones that suit Indian lips for the perfect Indian bridal makeup. Makeup artist Sohini Juneja shares her expert tip, “Lighter shades will work well for those with thin lips. For fuller lips, use reds and maroons but ensure that they don’t overpower the look.” In Malayali Hindu weddings, off-white silk sarees are worn, so bright lip shades are perfect for the Kerala bridal makeup. A dash of colour and you’re all set to make the look pop.
BASE
Start by creating a light base with the foundation and concealer that are two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. The products tend to oxidize on the skin of some brides so opt for natural products. You don’t want to appear grey in the wedding pictures. Use an orange tone colour corrector for the warm skin tones to hide any spots or blemishes. A clean and flawless base is the best bet.
BLUSH
You should go for blushes in coral and orange tones that enhance the warm hue of your skin tone. Don’t forget to use a bronzer for that golden glow. As most of the South Indian women are blessed with sharp features that don’t require highlighting, so you should go easy with the contouring even though it is one of the latest bridal makeup trends. Makeup artist Shruti Sharma recommends, “Since the weddings are mostly in the mornings, so I avoid shimmer and very heavy-duty highlights and shadows for the South Indian bridal makeup.” You will find many bridal makeup images for inspiration.
ACCESSORIES
18 / FASHION BUD / APRIL- 2019
Just as north Indian brides have mathapatti, the South Indian brides have Thalaisaamaan which creates a parting in the bridal hairstyle. It is an integral part of the headdress that characterizes the South Indian brides. Accessories like tilak or bindi are used in all cultures differently. Simple bindis are popular in Tamil weddings. In Kannada weddings, they have a specific shape of the tilak and alternate dots of brown and white are drawn over the eyebrows. Clip these well so that you can freely dance to the peppy Tamil wedding songs during the celebrations.
Q& A
Talk to your makeup artist beforehand to ensure that the family traditions are followed. She will suggest products that don’t react with your skin and stay put even when you’re busy grooving to the wedding songs. Humidity and emotions can wash your look, so opt for waterproof products or get airbrush makeup done. The key to South Indian bridal makeup is to appear natural to ensure you look stunning in all the pictures your wedding photographer takes.

HOW TO NATURALLY
LOSE WEIGHT W
hile there are endless diets, supplements, and meal replacement plans claiming to ensure rapid weight loss, most lack any scientific evidence. There are, however, some strategies backed by science that do have an impact on weight management. These strategies include exercising, keeping track of calorie intake, intermittent fasting, and reducing the number of carbohydrates in the diet. In this article, we consider nine effective methods of weight loss. Science-backed ways to lose weight Methods of weight loss that scientific research supports include the following: 1. Trying intermittent fasting woman measuring her waist Several research-backed strategies can aid weight loss, one of which is intermittent fasting (IF). Intermittent fasting (IF) is a pattern of eating that involves regular shortterm fasts and consuming meals within a shorter time period during the day. Several studies have indicated that short-term intermittent fasting, which is up to 24 weeks in duration, leads to weight loss in overweight individuals. The most common intermittent fasting methods include the following: Alternate day fasting (ADF): Fast every other day and eat normally on non-fasting days. The

quency of monitoring food intake and exercise. Even a device as simple as a pedometer can be a useful weight-loss tool.
The 5:2 Diet: Fast on 2 out of every 7 days. On fasting days eat 500–600 calories.
3. Eating mindfully Mindful eating is a practice where people pay attention to how and where they eat food. This practice can enable people to enjoy the food they eat and maintain a healthy weight. As most people lead busy lives, they often tend to eat quickly on the run, in the car, working at their desks, and watching TV. As a result, many people are barely aware of the food they are eating.
The 16/8 method: Fast for 16 hours and eat only during an 8-hour window. For most people, the 8-hour window would be around noon to 8 p.m. A study on this method found that eating during a restricted period resulted in the participants consuming fewer calories and losing weight. It is best to adopt a healthy eating pattern on non-fasting days and to avoid over-eating. 2. Tracking your diet and exercise If someone wants to lose weight, they should be aware of everything that they eat and drink each day. The most effective way to do this is to log every item that they consume, in either a journal or an online food tracker. Researchers estimated in 2017 that there would be 3.7 billion health app downloads by the end of the year. Of these, apps for diet, physical activity, and weight loss were among the most popular. This is not without reason, as tracking physical activity and weight loss progress on-the-go can be an effective way of managing weight. One study found that consistent tracking of physical activity helped with weight loss. Meanwhile, a review study found a positive correlation between weight loss and the fre-
4. Eating protein for breakfast Protein can regulate appetite hormones to help people feel full. This is mostly due to a decrease in the hunger hormone ghrelin and a rise in the satiety hormones peptide YY, GLP-1, and cholecystokinin. Research on young adults has also demonstrated that the hormonal effects of eating a high-protein breakfast can last for several hours. Good choices for a high-protein breakfast include eggs, oats, nut and seed butters, quinoa porridge, sardines, and chia seed pudding. 5. Cutting back on sugar and refined carbohydrates Woman pouring nuts and dried fruit into hand It can help to swap high-sugar snacks for fruits and nuts. The Western diet is increasingly high in added sugars, and this has definite links to obesity, even when the sugar occurs in beverages rather than food.

WHAT ’S HEALTHY ABOUT IT With feel-good ingredients like vitamin A-packed sweet potato; juicy immunity-boosting mushrooms; and antiinflammatory onions, this pizza is a clean and inspiring way to change up your menu. A total bonus; It’s also vegetarian, so invite that cute nonmeateating neighbour over for a slice. INGREDIENTS 1 bag store-bought pizza dough 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil ¼ tsp sea salt to taste, divided 4 slices organic bacon, cut into 3cm pieces ½ red or yellow onion, finely diced 2 cups curly kale, finely chopped 1 cup organic, lowsugar marinara sauce 1 cup part-skim mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 egg
SWEET POTATO & SAUTÉED MUSHROOM PIZZA MAKES 8 SERVINGS
DIRECTIONS 1) Preheat oven to 200° and set pizza dough out at room temperature for about 20 minutes. 2) On a clean work surface with a touch of flour, roll out pizza dough into a 1cm thick, 25cm-35cm round. Place it on a large baking sheet or pizza stone, or in a round cast-iron pan. Brush dough with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt, then prebake for about 5 minutes. 3) In a large skillet over medium heat, add bacon and cook until crisp; set aside to drain on paper towels. Add diced onion to the pan and cook until softened, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Add chopped kale to the pan and cook until wilted, about 2 minutes.
SWEET POTATO PERFECTION Sweet potato contains fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and even protein. Some of these nutrients are found in its skin, so try leaving it on when making your puree.
4) Top pizza with marinara sauce, mozzarella, and sautéed kale and onions. Bake in the oven on the middle rack for 12–14 minutes. 5) Two to 4 minutes before pizza is ready, crack egg on top and bake until crust is crisp and egg is slightly cooked. Remove from the oven, cool slightly, and serve alongside a blond ale brew.

n our country people have woken up to the health and fitness culture. The digital revolution has brought many health devices to our shores including a fitness band. This fitness band is called Jawbone UP3, which has syncing feature along with a battery. The display size is .
On the hardware side, Jawbone is fixing an issue with the clasp on the Up2. The new hardware units should have clasps that don’t unhook without warning, a criticism that was levied at Jawbone ever since the launch of the Up2. However, the Up3 will not receive the same adjustment to the clasp, despite similar concerns. Jawbone has not confirmed if older hardware owners will be able to swap out the defective Up2 bands for the new one or pay a small amount to switch bands.

Toward a Meaningful Life A psychologist challenges our fixation on happiness and maintains that true satisfaction comes from creating a life of purpose.
E
mily Esfahani Smith spent much of her childhood living in a Sufi meetinghouse that her parents ran in Montreal. She was surrounded by people devoted to carrying out the ancient spiritual practice’s core principles, which emphasize serving others. Her world changed significantly when she and her family moved to the United States, where “the busyness of everyday life trumped the rituals of meditation, singing, and tea,” she explains in her 2017 book, The Power of Meaning: Crafting a Life That Matters. The transition was a challenge. She had grown up in a selfless culture that focused primarily on the practice of loving kindness, and suddenly found herself in a country where pursuing one’s own happiness is so important it’s enshrined in one of its founding documents. Through it all, she struggled to answer a fundamental question: How do we live a meaningful life? Looking for clues to this puzzle led her to the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied positive psychology, a field of research she says has inadvertently added to what she calls America’s “happiness frenzy.” “Though the happiness industry continues to grow, as a society, we’re more miserable than ever,” she writes. But positive psychology has helped her grasp a simple truth: Happiness alone doesn’t define a satisfying life; it’s meaning and purpose that matter most.

Happiness without meaning,” to quote one study about the distinction between the two, “characterizes a relatively shallow, self-absorbed, or even selfish life, in which things go well, needs and desires are easily satisfied, and difficult or taxing entanglements are avoided...
Q& A Experience Life | What’s the distinction between happiness and meaning? Emily Esfahani Smith | Happiness is a state of comfort and ease. Meaning is when people feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves. They feel driven by a sense of purpose — what they do matters — and they believe their lives make sense. How does shifting from pursuing happiness to creating meaning affect our well-being? Research indicates that when you pursue happiness, you do feel happy immediately after doing whatever elicits that feeling, but that boost fades away. Other studies show that fixating on feeling happy — the way American culture encourages us to — actually makes us unhappy. But it’s different with meaning. When you do meaningful things or activities that help you live out your values — like study for an important test or take care of someone who is sick — you may not necessarily feel happy in the moment, but you end up with a more enduring form of well-being and a deeper sense of contentment. Leading a meaningful life, on the other hand, involves doing things for others and even arguing with them — which shows you have values and convictions you’re willing to fight for. It is defined by being a “giver.” You describe four pillars of meaning — belonging, purpose, storytelling, and transcendence — that help us overcome what you call a “meaning crisis.” Can you explain how one of these building blocks works? People have told me that storytelling is the pillar that surprises them the most. Interestingly, it can have the most profound impact. We read stories in books and go to movies, but many of us don’t see our lives as stories. We think life is a series of events, but we tell stories about them to ourselves
and to others. We make narrative choices about the events that explain who we are and how we got to be a certain way.
degree in counseling so he could continue helping others. Changing how he told his story ended up changing his life and helped him find his purpose.
How we tell our stories affects how much meaning we feel. Psychologist Dan McAdams studied people living meaningful lives, people who tend to be generous and contribute to others. They tend to tell a “redemptive story” about their lives — one that moves from bad things happening to good things happening. In contrast, people who feel like their lives are less coherent, who are depressed, sometimes tell “contamination stories,” or those that move from good to bad.
Once we recognize our pillar of meaning, how can we use it? Make regular time for doing so. In other words, create habits of meaning. If storytelling is your pillar, take 10 minutes a day and write about the defining moments of your life and what you learned from them. For belonging, remember it exists in any moment with another person, not just loved ones. If you’re at a store, treat the cashier with dignity, and ask how he or she is doing. These small moments — what psychologist Jane Dutton calls “high-quality connections” — are potent sources of meaning. Purpose is all about contributing, so ask yourself, What’s one thing that I can do today to make someone else’s life better? It can be as small as emptying the dishwasher or as big as deciding to change the culture of your workplace.
For example, I interviewed a man who was paralyzed from a football injury. He spent a lot of time thinking about his new life, and the story he told was, “My life was great. I was a football player and experiencing success doing that. But, with my injury, now I wonder if I’ll ever get married, have a job, or even walk again.” As he thought more about it, he started telling a different story. He realized that before the injury he was more concerned about having a good time than leading a purposeful life. But his injury made him realize he could be a better man. Telling this new story to himself led him to start mentoring kids at his church and eventually get a college
With transcendence, there’s a study that found that looking up at a grove of trees for a minute inspired awe. That one minute helped participants step outside of themselves. So go for a walk around the block and leave your phone at home so you really take in the world around you. How has your life changed as a result of writing this book? For a while I got off track from the lessons I learned from the Sufis and focused more on being a successful person and pursuing my own happiness rather than focusing on leading a good, meaningful life. Having done this research, I know that I find meaning in helping people lead more fulfilling lives by sharing these ideas with them. Of course, the sources of meaning can change as your life changes. So later, I might find more meaning in raising the kids I hope to one day have. I’ve also learned that creating meaning is a struggle — that’s the point. A meaningful life is not easy; it’s a life in which you’re always searching and aspiring for something higher, for some bigger ways to make a dent in this world.
