Structure component 1
Design Brief And Specification
• For my project I am aiming to create a community youth Centre that would provide facilities for sports, art, music, culinary arts and other activities that children wish to learn, experience, a place that they can work if they don't have one at home or simply a place to relax. I want this project to consist of a range of different spaces for the expanse of entertainment options and practical options, such as a theatre, dance studio, music studio, workshops, IT rooms and much more. My main goal for this space is for is to be a place that is open a younger years, where they can entertain themselves so that they won't be stuck at home, somewhere they can go after school to relax or just an area they can enjoy with their friends. • What I am hoping to create is somewhere appealing, something that would draw others in, so I want a structure that's large, maybe colorful. Seeing as I am basing my building(s) in a natural area, I could probably incorporate natural and organic aspects into the building. • Also, as there are multiple activities do partake in a youth Centre, I want to create a sort of complex for my building, different areas depending on the activities and design to the areas for the activities too.
•
My primary theme is movement and flow
•
For the sports aspect of my buildings, realistically I would need facilities such as a gym, a sports hall, showers/changing rooms, aerobics studios, a pool – the basics of a sports centre
•
For the arts aspect of my buildings, I would need (music, art, photography, dance, etc) studios, workshops (containing equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, etc) galleries/exhibition halls, a theatre/concert hall and more
•
As my project is also meant
•
For the community aspect of my buildings, I would need IT rooms, a library, classrooms, (possibility another) Auditorium, etc.
•
Generally, the buildings should have lift access/wheelchair accessibility
•
Washrooms/toilets are needed, also with wheelchair accessibility
•
There will need to be a kitchen, food storage and an area for people to eat, a café is a possibility for this
•
Outdoor areas, such as outdoor seating, outdoor sports facilities, skating/biking area, bike racks and other outside facilities
Location For my location, I wanted my buildings to be placed in an area where in would be most needed but also where it would look appealing to anyone who would past by, so, in the end I decided to place my centre to be stationed in the greenary between Eastbrook school and Eastbrookend Country Park. The area contains May & Baker sports club, Goresbrook Cricket Club and additional sports area for Eastbrook school, however, I believe my project would be able to be useful for both establishments.
First Building: Sports and leisure
I wanted to give my sports building an appearance to it's function and for study, I looked at sports stadiums and their structures, which in hindsight showed to have a common detail; circular area. Most stadiums follow the structure of the pitch, this is why most olypmic stadiums have circular structure and why football/rugby stadiums have a more boxed structure. For my sports building, I want to follow the idea of a circular structure, as sports brings me the idea of a "flow" kind of theme that circles bring out.
The first olypmic stadium, the Panatheniac Stadium, has a rectangular shape but still contains a curve allowing full vision to the audience
Sapphire Romford Leisure
The building contains • 25m 8 Lane Swimming Pool with Moving floor • Learner Pool The problem with sports stadiums is that they • 100 stn Fitness Suite do not really offer variety, structures like • Multi-purpose Studios football, Olympic, etc. Are built with only the • Full size Ice Hockey Rink one sport in mind, however, leisure centers hold areas for multiple functions which is why • Sauna & Steam Room I am looking at the Sapphire Romford Leisure Centre.
Developing my building For my sports building I wanted to give it a more of an industrial style so I decided to grab my model ideas from industrial machinary so that I could intergrate it into my work. I drew out different pictures before pulling out my favoured shapes and cutting them out into paper shapes to manipulate in a way I liked
Modeling From this point of I started to manipulate paper into different forms so that I could look for a potential structure to use for my sports building. These shapes here are some ideas that I started off with, however, I later scrapped from my final design because I didn't find them interesting enough, however, some of the shapes within this ideas did make it onto my final ideas.

Second building: Art
Most buildings that are associated with art, (e.i art schools, galleries, etc.) don't really have a set shape when it comes to them. Actually, the tend to be abstract which I think suits them very well as it adds to the purprose of the building, an interesting shape for interesting items like paintings, sculptures, etc. So because of this fact, I decided to find shapes that were abstract and added style to art building idea.
In the end I decided to use a nature subject for my work because leaves hold a wild variety of different shapes which allows for wide experimentation with them which I find to be very useful. There is also the fact that my area is based beside a large country park, so, not only do the leaves fit my criteria of abstract or odd shapes for my structure, it also fits well with the surroudning area which I think would make the building look all the more appealing to people passing by the area
Models Once again like with the sports building, using the shapes given to me by the leaves, I can begin to create a variety of models so that I can finally determine my final design for my Art building
