ake this bag to suit yourself! This pattern is free and easy so you can make it just how you want it. There’s hardly any counting of stitches and rows, giving you lots of room for creative licence. So, gather together some yarns you love, hold several strands together to form a chunky yarn – this gives some vibrancy and variation of tone and texture – and get hooking. You’ll soon have a gorgeous shopping bag to show off!

Take A Headfirst Approach Making waves across Europe with their crochet hats, Thomas Jaenisch and Felix Rohland, the duo behind myboshi, are now taking the UK by storm.

homas Jaenisch and Felix Rohland, more commonly known as “the myboshi boys”, aren’t the types to let opportunities to pass them by. In January 2009, the pair headed to Japan to take part in a ski instructor exchange. “As students, we always jumped at the chance to be able to combine our hobby with foreign travel,” says Thomas. “But the question was what to do in the evenings when the après-ski was lacking?” The answer, they decided, was to start crocheting, with some help from a colleague in remastering the skills learnt at primary school. Thomas and Felix set up a website and quickly found they had a fan base. “It was a big surprise. We had created a nice sideline with our new-found hobby, but we still had our normal lives to lead.” At the same time, Thomas had to complete his thesis, which meant full-time supervision and evaluation of the product optimisation process for an electric motor manufacturer, while Felix had a traineeship as a prospective teacher to take up in September 2010. “It was a crazy time and we often wondered if we should just shut down the website.” However, they decided to take the challenge head on. The boys began selling the hats at stands across the region. “At the start, everybody looked at us confused, but the press JSYRH MX ER MRXIVIWXMRK WXSV] WS XLIR XLI ƤVWX articles appeared and the business began to grow and then more press appeared. “What we really love about crochet is that it is very easy to learn and very quick to do.” spreading the myboshi concept around the world, as do our siblings. Our parents help us with business questions and with creating patterns, and in developing and improving our crocheting skills.” Loving every stitch Part of the joy of crochet for the pair is that they are constantly learning new things. “Every time we make a new beanie, we discover different techniques and a variety of colour combinations. The possibilities are endless, which is the wonderful appeal of crochet – once you’ve mastered a few techniques, you can create so many different designs.” Thomas adds: “What we love about crocheting is that it is easy to learn, very quick to do, and you can start and stop wherever you want.” And this was, perhaps, the stroke of genius that has set them apart – they began to offer patterns and simple instructions to allow people to learn to crochet and create their own boshis, hence the name: “it’s your Boshi, your style .” Thomas explains: “On our website is the myboshi GSRƤKYVEXSV ũ E XSSP XS GVIEXI ]SYV S[R FIERMI by choosing your style and colour. seems to have captured the hearts of hipsters all across the continent. “It felt very strange at ƤVWX ;I [IVI WIIMRK ZIVWMSRW SJ SYV FSWLMW everywhere – in discos, during the winter and even in summertime.” When asked why they think myboshi made such an impact, the boys are humble, saying simply: “Hard work and being in the right place at the right time.” Thomas elaborates: “There are a lot of young people who want to make something, but there’s still a lot of oldfashioned designs around. We have been able to offer cool patterns that are easy to complete and fun myboshi yarns.” Starting a new chapter The myboshi yarns look set to be a whole new chapter in the duo’s success story, and will be distributed in the UK by DMC (www. dmccreative.co.uk). “We wanted to have a fresh and fashionable colour range. ear your heart on your sleeve with Hannah Cross’s cool embellished mittens – for hardcore lovers of crochet only! The design was inspired by an illustration by Stephanie Toppin that caught Hannah’s eye. The simple double crochet stitches form a solid base to work your cross stitch onto, while working into the back loop of some of the stitches creates a ribbed effect.

■ FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULES TO CONSTRUCT CRO
■ THIS STITCH HAS NO HEIGHT – OFTEN USED TO JOIN ROUNDS
1 The slip stitch is used to join a length of chain into the round. Insert the hook from front to back into the first chain you worked. Wrap yarn round the hook (yrh) in an anticlockwise direction.
2 Pull the yarn through the chain stitch (as shown) and then the loop already on the hook to make a slip stitch. You can also work this stitch into each stitch along a row to form a neat edging.
CHET FABRIC
1 The first row is made by working across the foundation chain from right to left. At the end of the chain or row, turn the work so that the yarn is behind the hook.
2 For the next row, first make the turning chain for the stitch you’re about to work. Now work the next stitch into the top of the stitches on your first row, missing the first stitch.
(SYFPI GVSGLIX (dc) 97 XIVQ WMRKPI GVSGLIX
■ ONE OF THE KEY STITCHES IN CROCHET, DOUBLES ARE SIMPLE, COMPACT STITCHES THAT FORM A DENSE FABRIC
1 To make a double crochet stitch, insert the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch on the previous row.
2 Wind the yarn around the hook (yrh).
3 Pull the yarn through the stitch, giving you two loops on your crochet hook.
4 Yarn round hook again, then pull the yarn through both loops. You’ve made a double crochet stitch and will have one loop left on the hook, ready to do the next stitch.
,EPJ XVIFPI GVSGLIX (htr) 97 XIVQ LEPJ HSYFPI GVSGLIX
■ A HANDY STITCH THAT’S BETWEEN DOUBLE AND TREBLE CROCHET IN SIZE, AND LOOKS SLIGHTLY LOOSER THAN DOUBLE CROCHET
1 To make a half treble crochet stitch, work to where you want the htr and then wind the yarn round the hook (yrh).
2 Insert the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch in the previous row. Wrap yarn around the hook again (yrh).
3 Pull the yarn through the stitch only (3 loops on hook).
4 Yarn round hook again, pull the yarn through all 3 loops. You’ve made a half treble crochet. Continue working htr into next and following sts to the end of the row.
