KEY STAGES Words: Jake Burgess

For the first time in five years, the world’s premiere cycling event, La Tour de France, sets off from within France’s mainland borders. Our riders get their first shift cruising along the 188km road race toward Utah beach where we expect some fine sprinting and a worthy opening to this year’s race. The competitors will have over 3,500km to traverse over the 21 Tour stages, battling against the circuit’s gruelling mountain climbs, endless flats and time trials as they bid to win the famed yellow, green and polka dot jerseys. First Thing’s First: Who Should I Be Watching?

TOUR DE FRANCE

Chris Froome – Team Sky With three Tour victories in six years for Team Sky – of which two left Froome in the coveted maillot jaune – it’s impossible to imagine this squad anywhere other than the podium when they ride in to central Paris on July 24th. Individual time trials coupled with mountainous routes early on play to the Kenyan-born Brit’s strengths and he’ll be expecting to start building his lead from the word go. His previous two Tour wins in 2013 and 2015 came off the back of splendid winning performances at the Critérium du Dauphiné, a feat he repeated last month for the third time. When history and recent form combine like they have this summer, it will take quite an upset to manhandle that yellow jersey from Team Sky. Britain is globally renowned for its programmes, athletes and successes in cycling and Team Sky epitomise that expertise. The bookies favourite to retain their title from last year, manager David Brailsford will have his work cut out for him as every single team seeks to end their dominant run in France.

6

Nairo Quintana – Movistar Movistar have put a fine team together for this year’s Tour with Nairo Quintana at the fore, challenging for the title of overall winner. The Columbian has made an impressive climb in world cycling circles; he already has two runner-up medals for the 2013 and 2015 Tours, in each

instance second only to Froome. This year’s circuit features nine mountain stages (totalling over 1500 km) within the first nine days. Quintana will view this course as a time to shine and will be a formidable foe in each of them – he roared ahead of Froome on stage 20’s brutal climb last year, winning the polka dot jersey and demonstrating that on the world stage, he is a near-unstoppable climber. For the team itself, Movistar have made it their mission to build a supporting cast of talented and “more complete” riders than Britain’s Alex Dowsett, who rode with the team last year. They’ve recruited time-trialist Ion Izagirre as well as Spanish veteran Alejandro Valverde to field probably their strongest ever unit. But do they have the nerve and resilience to hold off the talented Brits? Alberto Contador – Tinkoff Contador is a true veteran of the grand Tour as one of only a handful of elite cyclists to have won all three Grand Tours, including two past wins in this event alone. Seemingly concerting his efforts on France this year, he has skipped the entire Giro d’Italia (which he won last year) and will be fighting fit, fresh and fiercely competitive, as is his trademark. The Spaniard has been heralded as an ideal stage racer: a powerful climber, fast timetrialist and skilled tactician on the road. Accolades aside, Contador is in good form and will be pushing Quintana on every incline over the next three weeks. Whispers have been echoed questioning

his ability to compete against young powerhouses like Quintana, but last year’s Giro d’Italia victory should have put those concerns to bed. Known as “anything but boring” on the Tour, Tinkoff will be vying for the win, but you can guarantee that wherever they finish up it will be done in style. They currently lead in UCI WorldTour rankings and have bolstered their squad with two Spanish national champions and Maciej Bodnar, Polish time trial champion and look just as likely to finish podium as anyone else. The 2016 Circuit: New Changes and Big Tests This year sees the climbers take to the

Team time trials have been discarded and two individual trials lay in wait: stages 13 and 18 respectively. Those athletes chasing the yellow jersey will have punished themselves scaling Ventoux, so stage 13 might be an unusually compelling time trial as this could be a defining stage in whether teams will win or lose the entire event. A Final Word As per tradition, the Tour will come to a close in the Champs-Élysées in the low-light of the setting sun as the riders sip champagne and let their legs get a well-earned rest. The final sprint up to the Arc de Triomphe is probably the most celebrated in the world of cycling

and even 3,500km of brutal ordeals can’t stop these riders going at 110% on day 21. This is a spectacle truly worth making time for. Come rain or shine, it’s set to be a momentous year for the Tour, and I for one cannot wait for things to get underway. What have you got to lose? •

stage as early as day 5 on the 216km road from Limoge to Le Lorian. A hard climb will terminate in a downhill finish that should be hotly contested to the last. With one day of flat before three successive mountain stages over the weekend, seasoned climbers will be looking to build leads early to secure precious seconds before the 3-week fatigue sets in. The Tour also revisits the infamous Mont Ventoux, a climb which instils fear in the most stalwart competitors. The grade average is 8.8% and peaks at 9.5% on both the first and last of the 16 kilometres. Fans witnessed a truly heroic climb from Chris Froome as he tackled the mountain in 2013 and hope for as spectacular a finish this year; it truly is one of the world’s most inspiring climbs.
