In the 1940s, chronic overgrazing had reduced the Marico district in South Africa’s North West Province to a near-desert region. Madikwe Game Reserve was formed following a candid appraisal of the struggling area’s future by the South African Parks Board. The decision to turn its faltering farmland into a game reserve was made in 1991, and developments since then have more than justified that decision.

Birds and Birding 350 species of bird have been recorded in Madikwe, which ought to satisfy the tastes of all but the most exacting watchers of birds.
The Madikwe Game Reserve – one of the few malaria-free reserves in Southern Africa – is located in South Africa along the Botswana border. Only four hours’ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Madikwe is now one of South Africa’s prime safari destinations and one of the biggest Big-5 reserves in the country. he diversity of Madikwe’s habitats has led some to call it home to the ”Big 7”, with the rarer cheetah and wild dog supplementing the usual line-up of popular game species. Madikwe is amply stocked with other game: black and white rhino, about 250 elephants, spotted hyena and most of southern Africa’s plains antelopes. In addition to remarkable wildlife, the reserve is also home to a range of luxury accommodation, from five-star opulence to roughing it in style. There are also a number of community lodges in the reserve, which means international visitors get to learn more about local lifestyles and culture during their stay. On the whole, all those who have visited the reserve and stayed at one of her spectacular lodges can testify to the fact that Madikwe has definitely perfected the formula for the definitive luxury African Safari.
When to go Generally speaking the winter months in Southern Africa bring about the dry season. Not only does this mean you won’t get soggy and muddy on game drives, but more importantly, at this time of year the bush is at its thinnest, so less foliage for wildlife to hide behind, which means easier sightings for you. In fact, it gets even easier than that as the lack of water results in thirsty animals congregating around permanent waterholes or along riverbanks, so you’re virtually guaranteed close-up sightings of herds of elephants splashing about and the triangular shapes of giraffes, their long necks lowered for a cooling drink.

AGRICULTURE The Dr. Ruth S Mompati Region boasts as the largest beef-producing region in South Africa, with Hereford cattle being the most popular, hence the name “Texas of South Africa”. Maize and peanuts are important crops produced in the district. The district was renamed after the mayor of Vryburg.
HERITAGE
WATER SPORTS
The district is identified as a heritage hub for the province because of the discovery and recognition, as well as the significance of the Taung child. This find gave rise to the remarkable insights and revolutionary claims of Raymond Dart, which created not only a new genus and species of hominid, but a series of new scientific endeavours. Heritage resources such as this trace the fabric of the country’s heritage all the way back to the dawn of humankind. Sites such as the Taung Heritage Site and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (shared with bordering Gauteng) signify the depth of the history represented in the North West Province, and have subsequently been developed for tourism purposes.
CULTURE
A variety of water sports are on offer in the region, primarily at the Bloemhof Dam. The dam is one of the largest in South Africa, and visitors to the dam can look forward to myriad water-related sports and activities, including windsurfing, sailing, skiing, and canoeing. For a less challenging experience, enjoy a leisurely cruise, a peaceful picnic alongside the water or simply be treated to a spectacular aquatic sunset, or fish the dam’s waters, known to be home to an abundance of carp, as well as five other fish species, namely the large mouth yellow fish, mogget catfish, orange river mudfish and the vleikurper. The Bloemhof Dam is rated as one of South Africa’s finest angling locations.
HUNTING
The arrestingly diverse landscape of the North West is occupied by charming people who’s responsibility to the land parallels their strong sense of tradition. The culture of the people of the North West is to be found in every aspect of their daily lives – in their beadwork, the pottery, the houses, the music and song. The people of the North West are predominantly BaTswana in origin and their language is SeTswana. They can trace their origins back many centuries through a turbulent history of war and migration across the plains and valleys of the province, to the borders of the Kalahari. The district has a rich variety of cultural resources such as Archaeological sites, Graves, Forts, Bushman paintings, Battlefields, Historic buildings, and National monuments.
An ultimate bush experience, the North West offers an unforgettable hunting safari. Hunters have an in-depth knowledge of the bush and can offer you a unique experience, not to be found anywhere else. The district accounts for between 55% and 60% of lion hunts in the province, and hunting safaris primarily take place on tribal and game farms. Honeymoon An African safari honeymoon in the Pilanesberg? The idea had never crossed my mind...
Enchanted Wilderness For a start, the Pilanesberg Game Reserve is an enchanting destination, with far-stretching views and magnificent sunsets. The rolling hills and thick, green vegetation contrasted with grassy plains have a distinctly African feel, and there’s no shortage of birds and game to bring the scenery to life. The Pilanesberg National Park is splendidly located within the North West Province of South Africa and borders with the entertainment complex of Sun City.
I’ve never pictured my ideal honeymoon in a game reserve. And I’ve never been able to see the romantic side of such a holiday. Until now, that is. I’m now an avid fan of African safari honeymoons, and have discovered, to my delight, that game drives, even without a partner present, can be exceedingly romantic experiences.

Adventure Activities The Pilanesberg National Park provides the ideal malariafree African safari, and presents myriad fantastic adventure activities such as game drives, balloon and elephant-back safaris, lion park tours, quad biking and so much more.
Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Three rings of hills fringe the area covering the Pilanesberg National Park. This is the park’s primary geological feature and is known as ‘The Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex.’

ut then, why would it... As I took my first tentative step into the rugged wilderness of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, not only was I not on honeymoon, but I wasn’t even travelling with a partner. Once I was in the game reserve, however, and attempting to experience it from a honeymooner’s perspective, my attitude changed significantly.

Situated in the northeastern region of the Pilanesberg National Park, in the basin of an ancient amphitheatre, Ivory Tree comprises 60 double suites, located on the edges of the amphitheatre basin, each featuring a full en suite bathroom, mini bar fridge, air-conditioning, and tea and coffee making facilities.

e stayed at Ivory Tree Game Lodge, which is situated in an isolated corner of the park. I wasn’t even staying in a honeymoon suite, yet my room had several distinctly romantic features, which I would imagine are great for honeymooners. The rooms open out onto secluded patios, where double-loungers are positioned to enjoy the best views. It’s the sort of place where one can fall asleep in total comfort and peace, with big, puffy pillows to lie back on while soaking up the sun and the views. This was a favourite afternoon spot of mine, and while I didn’t try it myself, I’m sure that it would be an even better place to curl up and gaze at the stars while lying snugly under a blanket. In my opinion, I could think of nothing better to do on honeymoon. Another great feature of the suite was the bathroom – the large bath next to an even larger window just needed some candles and bubble bath to be transformed into a honeymoon accessory. Stretched out in a steaming hot bath as the calming scents of aromatherapy oils waft around the candlelit room; with the only sounds being the soothing chirps of the crickets; is one of those magical moments that are always best shared with the person you love.
Personal Attention After a day outdoors there’s nothing better than coming back to a room made beautiful by the turndown service. Gentle netting is draped around the beds, nougat bars placed upon the pillows and the lights are dimmed, creating a warm atmosphere. You may not think that exceptional service is the most important part of a honeymoon, but if you don’t have to lift a finger, it means you can spend all your time and energy on your partner, rather than on the mundane details of daily living. As I lay by the pool on a lounger, it occurred to me that I hadn’t had to get up for anything during the entire day. Whenever I took a dip in the pool, a new, dry towel would be waiting for me on my return, and my glass was never empty with barmen constantly on hand to fetch drinks. Possibly the best facility of all those offered by the lodge was the spa. What better way to spend a day on honeymoon than to have rejuvenating and relaxing treatments for two at the spa. Everything about the lodge contributed towards a worry-free and pampered holiday. Everybody loves fantastic service, and it’s the small things that count when it comes to making a honeymoon special.

The ranger woke me up at 5am so that I could be on a game drive by 5.30, and I was hardly in a romantic honeymoon mood. All I could think about was the iciness of the air versus the warmness of my bed, and the cup of strong coffee that I was relying on to bring me into consciousness. But once on the drive I soon realised that it was all worth it, and I wouldn’t have missed it for any amount of sleep in the world. Nothing can compete with watching an entire pride of lions taking an early morning stroll along the road, silhouetted by one of the most exquisite sunrises I’ve ever seen. In the distance I spied a hot air balloon, floating about in the dusty pink sky as its passengers gazed out at what I can only imagine was a magnificent view. It’s scenes like these which made me realise that being out in nature, with all its splendour and wildness, makes a honeymoon, or any type of holiday for that matter, truly exceptional and undoubtedly romantic.
Equally, the late afternoon game drives provided a similar experience, with picture-perfect sunsets to round off your day. The thrill of a close encounter with lions, leopards or elephants as night falls in, is an experience that no words could ever aptly describe, and it’s the kind of moment you’d want to share with the person you love. Above everything else, it’s moments like these that make a honeymoon safari in the Pilanesberg a fantastic and treasured experience.

Hit the Road There are close on 200 km of excellent dirt roads within the park, which can be used for either self-drives or guided drives.
Big 5 encounters An abundance of wild creatures proliferate in this diverse and arresting bushveld terrain. Besides of course housing Africa’s Big 5, the Pilanesberg National Park is also home to a wide variety of other rare and common species such as the nocturnal brown hyena, the fleet-footed cheetah, the majestic sable, as well as giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile.

ProNutro Zip Slide 2000 Situated in Sun City, the ProNutro Zip Slide 2000 is the longest zip slide in the world. The slide is approximately 280 meters high, two kilometers long, reaches a speed of 150 km per hour and guarantees a two to three minute unadulterated adrenalin rush. Secured in two harnesses and suspended below a free running trolley that is attached to a steel
cable, one experiences the feeling of flying and acceleration as you descend down the wire. Sliders are at times 100m in the air and at other times only 2.5m above the ground. The cable runs from the top of the 280m high koppie to the top of a mast 2km away. Towards the end of the ride, the decent is slowed as you go uphill, then you roll back to the lowest point on the wire where you are assisted to dismount the ride. Solo and tandem slides are available so this ride has an appeal for even the most amateur adventure junkie. Unlike many other adventure activities, this experience is open to young ones from the age of 12, making it a fun activity for the whole family. TAUNG WORLD HERITAGE SITE The history of the North West Province goes way back before the Anglo-Boer War – all the way to the beginning of humankind. The famous Taung Heritage Site is the archaeological site where the fossilized skull of a young child – the Taung skull (Australopithecus africanus) – was discovered by miners in 1924. The skull was taken to the noted Australian archaeologist, Dr. Raymond Dart who named it ‘Australopithecus Africanus’, meaning the southern ape of Africa. It is currently housed at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg.
HARTBEESPOORT Surrounded by the majesty of the Magaliesberg Mountains, Hartbeespoort Dam is very popular for weekend getaways or day trips. The most secretive and elusive of the large carnivores, the leopard is also the shrewdest. Pound for pound, it is the strongest climber of the large cats and is capable of killing prey larger than itself.

Leopards come in a wide variety of coat colours, from a light buff or tawny in warmer, drier areas to a dark shade in deep forests. The spots, or rosettes, are circular in East African leopards but square in southern African leopards.

Habitat Dense bush in rocky surroundings and forest rivers are their favourite habitats, but leopards adapt to many places in both warm and cold climates. Their adaptability, in fact, has helped them survive the loss of habitat to increasing human settlement. Leopards are primarily nocturnal, usually resting during the daytime in trees or thick bush and the spotted coat provides almost perfect camouflage.
Behaviour Leopards are solitary creatures and each individual has a home range that overlaps with its neighbours; the male’s range is much larger and generally overlaps with those of several females. Leopards continually move about their territory, seldom staying in an area for more than two or three days at a time. Ranges are marked with urine and claw marks and leopards announce their presence to other leopards with a rasping cough. Leopards also growl, roar and purr. A litter includes two or three cubs, whose coats appear to be smoky grey as the rosettes are not yet clearly delineated. The female abandons her nomadic wandering until the cubs are large enough to accompany her. She keeps them hidden for about the first eight weeks, giving them meat when they are six or seven weeks old and suckling them for three months or longer.

Predators and Threats The most widespread of the felines, leopards occur in regions across both Africa and Asia. Indeed, their adaptability to both warm and cold climates has helped them survive the loss of habitat caused by increasing human settlement. However, leopards have long been preyed upon by man. Their soft, beautiful fur has been used for clothing and the he tail, claws and whiskers of the leopard are popular as fetishes.
The elegant, powerfully built leopard has a long body, relatively short legs and a broad head. Its tawny coat is covered with dark, irregular circles called “rosettes.” Both lions and hyenas will claim a leopard’s kill if they can. To prevent this leopards keep their larger kills in trees where they can feed on them in relative safety. Status: Leopards have been given a Lower Risk status on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Leopard population figures are estimated at greater than 50 000 mature breeding individuals, but are cause for concern, with a declining trend due to hunting and degradation of its habitat and prey base. When you’re most likely to spot leopards: Leopards are nocturnal, arboreal and secretive, usually hunting well after dusk. It’s hard to spot them but sometimes they can be seen basking in the sun atop their favourite rocky vantage points or having a siesta in a treetop. Leopard reproduction and “home life”: During the day Leopards sleep in caves, rock shelters, draped over tree branches or hidden in dense vegetation. Leopards are solitary and highly territorial, living alone except in the case of a female with cubs. Constantly on the move within their own territory, they never spend more than a few days in one spot. Female leopards usually have two or three cubs but can have a litter of up to four. The young cubs are kept hidden in various shelters for the first six weeks, occasionally being moved for safety. They start hunting from the age of five months.

Why the leopard hides its food up a tree? (A Ndebele story) made up a feeble excuse, claiming that a sore foot was preventing him from hunting for his friends. At this the leopard roared with anger, “I thought you were my friends, but you are nothing more than a no-good lazy pair. I will never again leave you any part of my kill. From this day forth I shall take what is left and hang it in a tree once I have had my fill. This way neither one of you will be able to reach it!” Leopard was true to his word, for since that day he has never left any of his kill for his selfish friends. Up in a tree it goes, high out of reach of Jackal and Hyena. As a result they have become scavengers and are forced to eat the scraps that other animals leave behind.

The Ndebele tell their children that long ago there were a group of friends; the leopard, the jackal and the hyena… They went everywhere together, and whenever the leopard killed an animal he would always leave a part of it for his friends so that they could join in his feast. One day it happened that the leopard fell ill, and was unable to hunt… “Jackal” he asked, “please would you catch some food for us today, for I am not well.” “No”, replied the lazy jackal, “I am to weary, ask Hyena instead.” So off Leopard went to ask Hyena for assistance, but he too

Fry the garlic and the onion. Chop the tomato and add to the fried onions. Add tomato puree and sugar. Allow to simmer for 15 mins. Finish off with basil and season with salt and pepper. Fry the onion and spinach. In a separate sauce pan melt the butter, add the flour and stir in the milk, allow to thicken; Add nutmeg and season with salt and pepper. Add spinach to the sauce. Fry the whole mushroom with the garlic and oil. Season with salt and pepper. Grease ramekin. Line the bottom and the sides with the cooled polenta. Put some of the spinach into the centre. Cover with a layer of polenta.
Put the sautéed mushrooms on the centre of the plate, tip the heated polenta cake onto the mushrooms and pour over the Napolitana sauce. Place a few shaving of parmesan cheese on top and garnish with basil. Drizzle balsamic reduction and basil pesto over the plate.

Confit of Duck Etali Safari Lodge – Madikwe Game Reserve 8 duck legs (2 per person trimmed) 1 liter duck or goose fat 1 stalk fresh ginger, sliced Sprig of fresh rosemary
Ingredients for light citrus sauce:
1 liter of duck stock (or home-made chicken stock) 200ml fresh orange juice 2tbs orange marmalade 25ml soy sauce 1tsp grated fresh ginger 3 crushed cardamom seeds 1 star anise 50g cold butter cubed
Method:
Rub duck legs with some salt on the skin side only and let it stand in the fridge for one hour. Scrape off excess salt and arrange in a baking dish. Arrange ginger, orange slices and rosemary on top. Melt fat and pour over duck then cover with foil. Make sure duck legs are completely covered in fat and bake for three hours at 140°C until tender. For the sauce: Bring all of the ingredients to the boil, except for butter and let it reduce until sauce starts to thicken slightly. Remove star Anise and whisk in butter (sauce will thicken and become syrupy). Just before serving the duck, fry the legs in a hot pan, skin side down, until nice and crisp. Turn over and heat through. Serve on creamy buttered mash potatoes flavoured with ginger. Pour sauce over and serve.

Line ramekins with enough cling film over one side to cover the top when finished. Mix the avocado, cream cheese and spring onion together.
Line inside of ramekins with carpaccio and fill half-way with cream cheese mixture. Fold the carpaccio over to close the parcel, making sure that nothing leaks out. Cover with remaining cling film and refrigerate for about two hours or until set. Mix chopped melon, peppadews and some of the syrup to make the salsa. When ready to serve open the cling film, turn upside down and peel off the remaining cling film. Spoon the salsa around the plate and garnish with chives.

Lightly fry in hot oil till golden brown (do not deep fry). Remove and drain. Mix salmon and cottage cheese. Melt the sugar until caramel in colour. Pour into greased dariole moulds. Bring the milk to the boil and allow it to cool slightly.

Cream together the eggs and the castor sugar. Add the milk to the egg mixture, and then stir in the granadilla pulp and the vanilla essence. Pour the custard mixture into the dariole. Put into bain marie and fill half way with water. Bake in the oven at 150˚C for about 25 mins or until set. Garnish the plate with chocolate sauce, fresh strawberries and granadilla.

Historical site 11 Diagonal Street is a skyscraper in Johannesburg that was built in 1984 and stands 80m tall. It is designed to look like a diamond, and it reflects different views of the Central Business District no matter which angle you see it from.
Hector Pieterson Museum Hector Pieterson, age 13, was one of the first students to be killed during the 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto. He has since become a symbol of youth resistance to Apartheid. The Hector Pieterson Museum is a large museum located in Orlando West, Soweto, two blocks away from where Hector Pieterson was shot and killed. The museum is named in his honour and it became one of the first museums in Soweto when it opened on 16 June 2002.

Named after Mahatma Gandhi (formerly Van der Bijl Square) is located in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD. Once the site of the first courthouse in Jozi, the square now houses restaurants, bistros and other food outlets. Once considered to be one of the most dangerous places to be in the city, Gandhi Square is now one of the most happening places to go and have lunch, overlooking the rush and buzz of the city and keeping up with the trendiest Joburgers.

The museum covers the events leading up to, and during, the anti-Afrikaans Soweto Uprising. The 1976 Student Uprising changed the course of South African history and accelerated demands such as those for the release of political prisoners, the unbanning of political organisations and the formation of a new democratic South Africa. After the first democratic election in 1994, 16 June was declared ‘Youth Day’ to commemorate the contribution made by South Africa’s youth to the struggle against Apartheid. The memorial unveiled by president Nelson Mandela was erected in the early 1990s and houses photographic and audio-visual displays of the struggle of the youth against the injustices of Apartheid.

The Mandela House at 8115 Orlando West, on the corner of Vilakazi and Ngakane Streets in Soweto. It was built in 1945 and Nelson Mandela moved in in 1946 with his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase. They divorced in 1957, and from 1958 he was joined in the house by his second wife, Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela (Winnie). He was to spend little time here in the ensuing years, as his role in struggle activities became all-consuming and he was forced underground (1961), living a life on the run until his arrest and imprisonment in 1962. Nelson Mandela returned here for a brief 11 days after his release from Robben Island in 1990, before finally moving to his present house in Houghton. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, herself
Orlando Towers Orlando Power Station is a decommissioned coal fired power station in Soweto, South Africa. The power station was commissioned at the end of the Second World War and served Johannesburg for over 50 years. The station was decommissioned in 1998 after 56 years of service. In 2006 work was started to transform the site of the power station into an entertainment and business centre, and today the two cooling towers are a prominent landmark in Soweto. The towers draw masses of adrenalin junkies and art fundis on a daily basis, as they are also used for bungee and base jumping from a platform between the top of the two towers as well as into one of the towers, and both towers are painted, one functioning as an advertising billboard and the other containing the largest mural painting in South Africa.

Jacaranda City Pretoria is a city located in the northern part of Gauteng Province, and one of the country’s three capital cities. Originally named Pretoria Philadelphia, and later under the shroud of “the capital of Apartheid South Africa”, the city has undergone many transformations, and it’s political reputation changed with the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the country’s first non-Apartheid President at the Union Buildings close to Pretoria CBD. Pretoria’s attractions include gardens, parks, and places of leisure, as well as stately buildings, monuments, and museums tracing South Africa’s transition from Union, to Republic, and now democracy.
Freedom Park
Voortrekker Monument The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.
Union Buildings The Union Buildings form the official seat of the South African government and also house the offices of the President of South Africa. Though not in the centre of Pretoria, the Union Buildings occupy the highest point of Pretoria, and constitute
a South African National Monument. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and an emblem of democracy. Entrance to the building itself is prohibited, however, the beautiful terraced gardens, which boast a wide variety of indigenous plants, are open to the public and provide a truly amazing view over the city.
A multitude of other sites Popular Pretoria activities include a cultural walk around Church Square. The square is the historic centre of the city. Its most prominent feature is the statue of the Boer leader and President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger at its centre. Several historically and architecturally significant buildings surround the square: the Palace of Justice, the Old Capitol Theatre, the Tudor Chambers, the Ou Raadsaal (Old Council Chamber) and the General Post Office, and Kruger House, the historical home of Paul Kruger. Today Kruger House is a museum that tries to recreate the ambience of the period that Kruger lived in. The turreted Palace of Justice was the scene of arguably the most famous political trial in South Africa’s history, the Rivonia Trial, where 10 leaders of the African National Congress (including Nelson Mandela) were tried for acts of sabotage designed to overthrow the Apartheid system.
