aterfall Mall Issue 2/Festive 2016/

After a long and eventful year it is finally time to dust off the Christmas decorations, and in many cases, pack our bags for destinations both exotic and local. This issue of the News Flash has lined up some helpful hints and tips for all your holiday requirements from shopping and entertaining to packing your bags and staying safe in the bright South African sun. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.

PHOTOS WITH SANTA Bring the kids to Waterfall Mall and have their photo taken with Santa. Santa will be celebrating with us in the Centre Court from 25 November to 24 December... This should leave him just enough time to make his way around the world, in time for Christmas morning.

Remember to go to page 8 for tons of Kiddies Festive Fun activities. Every year we marvel at just how fast a year seems to fly by… “It feels as if we just celebrated Christmas”, someone might say. “I can’t wait to get away for a while”, someone else might comment. For us at Waterfall Mall the Festive Season is one of the most exciting and joyous, albeit the busiest, time of the year, but it is all worth it to see the smiles on our children’s faces as they sit on Santa’s lap, or play in our Festive Centre Court. We of course empathise with the weary parents moving from shop to shop in search of the perfect gift, and smile to ourselves as husbands and dads pop in on their own to pick just the right thing for their wives. That’s where we hope we can be of assistance. This issue of News Flash is dedicated to all of you, our loyal friends. We hope that the time and effort we have put into compiling our Gift Guide, will go a long way to making your Season a little more exciting, and just a teeny bit easier. There are also a few delicious recipes for you to try out at your family Festive Dinner parties; something a little different to spice up the traditional fare. And for all our shoppers preparing to hit the long road to destinations near and far, we ask that you travel safely and come back refreshed and ready to tackle a whole new year. Our Travel Light feature is designed especially for you, to assist you in your decision making when it comes to packing for your trip. With all that having been said, we would like to wish you a very merry Festive Season, and a happy New Year from the entire management team at Waterfall Mall. We look forward to spending this Season with you. Marlene Bouwer Centre Manager Waterfall Mall

Fresh, new look for Cape Town Fish Market The Cape Town Fish Market opened its doors almost 20 years ago when restaurateur Douw Krugmann purchased a fresh fish retail store at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. Today, the Cape Town Fish Market is a vibrant restaurant franchise, with stores all over the country, including right here in Rustenburg. The décor has always captured the soul of bygone days in various fishing harbours by using historical photographs, obtained from various Cape Town museums. After 10 years of doing business in Rustenburg, franchise owner, Leon Loots, and his business partner, Louise Oosthuizen, felt it was time to give back to their loyal customers by updating and modernising this iconic look and feel. The store reopened on 18 October and the result is a unique, upmarket style with a familiar atmosphere that caters to everyone, whether you’re having a romantic dinner, or enjoying a delicious seafood lunch with your family. Some of the highlights include new furniture and beautiful lighting fixtures, which look spectacular at night. The goal was to create a space that is upmarket, yet cozy. If the feedback from customers is anything to go by, the renovations were a great success. Loots and Oosthuizen are delighted that customers – and especially regulars – love the new look. They would like to thank customers for their patience and support and invite everyone to come have a look at the new restaurant and the brand new menu. To make a reservation, visit www.ctfm.co.za or call 014 537 3663 (Shop 213).

SKIN CARE FIRST What is so bad about getting a bit of colour over the holidays? Remember that a tan is actually your skin’s way of protecting itself against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Over time, the UVA and UVB radiation in sunshine can weaken the lower layer of skin, which in turn may cause wrinkles, brown spots, and in some cases the development of skin cancer.

BE SUN SMART The best way to enjoy the sun safely & protect your skin during the summer holidays is to try the following:

Try and stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm. This is the time that you are most likely to burn.

Cover up. Wear a light shirt, hat and sunglasses.

Get into the habit of using skin products with UV protection, or invest in a good daily sunscreen that forms part of your beauty regimen.

Drink at least 2l of water throughout the day, and more if you are active outdoors.

Use a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 20, and re-apply often.

Myth: Waterproof sunscreen doesn’t wash off in the water. Untrue. While waterproof sunscreen maintains its SPF level for up to 40 minutes while in the water, it too needs to be reapplied every hour, and more often if you are drying yourself with a towel often.

Our favourite products right now: Lipidol Sunscreen Oil SPF 20, exclusive to Clicks, from R79; Sorbet BB Cream with SPF 15, Clicks, from R 60; Ponds BB Cream with SPF 30, from R 79; Uriage Lip Care, Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh, from R184; Piz Buin Wet Skin Transparent Sun Spray, from R254; Vichy Capital Soleil, from R365; Garnier Ambre Solaire Protection Spray, from R 124. All products available at Clicks and Dischem unless otherwise specified.

HYDRATION, HYDRATION

Besides protecting your skin against the sun, remember that during the hot summer months you need to keep your body, skin and lips hydrated. To do this you need to drink at least 2l of water every day, and make sure to use hydrating products on your skin, hair and lips so as to ensure that you always look and feel your glowing best. Gentlemen: Also remember that keeping your skin hydrated and smooth after shaving is just as important as drinking your 8 glasses a day.

ABOUT HAIR & NAILS

Myth: If it’s cloudy outside, you don’t need sunscreen. Untrue: Studies show that up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can pass through clouds. This is why people often end up with serious sunburns on overcast days, if they’ve spent time outside with no sun protection.

Commonly missed places when applying sunscreen include: Hands, feet, lips, scalp, ears and behind your knees. Remember these in future, and you’ll avoid a lot of discomfort on your holidays.

What’s the difference between sunscreen and sunblock?

• Sunscreen, the more

commonly used type of sun protection, filters the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. It keeps most rays out but lets some in. • Sunblock, on the other hand, reflects the sun’s rays from the skin, blocking the rays from penetrating the skin.

Sunglasses for the whole family Sunglasses aren’t only a fashion statement, but can protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Children should be encouraged to wear protective sunglasses from a young age.

Myth: A beach umbrella blocks the sun. Untrue. While a beach umbrella is an excellent form of protection from the sun, it’s not foolproof. Sand reflects 17% of UV radiation, so you’re still exposed. Nevertheless, it’s smart to stay in the shade when the sun’s rays are high; just make sure you’re still slathering on the sunscreen. TRAVEL LIGHT Where you choose to spend you summer vacation is up to you. Whether you prefer hitting the crowded beaches, relaxing in the sprawling bushveld or making the midlands or the Karoo your port of call, the one thing you don’t need to be lugging around is a heavy suitcase in which you’ve packed your entire wardrobe and the kitchen sink. By Gwynedd Peters

What you will discover when you commit to traveling light, is that you’ll remember that your holiday is not about what you bring, it’s about what you experience.

Throughout South Africa the summer months are hot, hot, hot… and as such the weather is relatively predictable. So unless we are hit by any unexpected snow storms, your packing list should be quite easy to plan.

The first trick is to pack as many of the items on the list from items you already have in your closet, including things like your favourite shorts, or sandals and sneakers. The last thing you want to do on holiday is break in a new pair of shoes, or pull on a pair of pants that just don’t sit right… And considering that you are packing a minimalist capsule, you won’t have a hundred other options to pick from.

When creating a capsule for your travel requirements, there are a few tips to keep in mind: • Check the weather - a 7-day forecast is best. • Make a mental list of activities you plan to take part in, special events, dress codes, etc. Now simply mix and match the various items in your • Settle on a colour palette. bag for up to 20 different outfits.

Top Packing Tips: • Select neutral bottoms that can be paired with any of the tops you pack, thereby tripling your outfit options • Add colour to your palette with bright and lively swim wear • Pack only one jersey/sweater or light jacket, as these take up a lot of precious packing space. • Pack a tablet or e-reader instead of big bulky books • Shoes take up a lot of space, so plan wisely

Make every gifting opportunity an event. Get creative with the packaging! Rather than just handing over a gift in regular wrapping paper, think of the gifting experience as an event - and make sure the recipient enjoys it. Give an experience. Buy him or her a weekend away, an adventure experience, a day trip to somewhere they’ve not been before. Make a list of all the things the person is interested in and things that define who they are. Make this list long - spend at least two full minutes writing down as many things as you can. Now brainstorm something to go with every item on that list, small or big. You don’t have to give all of those gifts, but you’re going to hit on some cool ideas you wouldn’t have otherwise. Safeguarding memories. Maybe someone on your list recently graduated from university or college, got married, had a baby or went on an exotic vacation... You could have some of their pictures framed or printed on canvas so that they can put these memories on show. For the person who already has everything. Ask yourself what that person needs. Believe it or not, they DO need something. The key is to think outof-the-box, for example, a business man might need more time, so give him something to better plan his time. A student on the other hand might need something more practical, like a first term survival kit. Thinking creatively is key. Do some innocent on-line stalking. Many people have on-line wish lists from their favourite store, and with a bit of snooping you can probably find out exactly what they have been planning to buy for themselves. Include a little bit of yourself. Make it personal in a different way - personalised from you rather than for them. Create a piece of art, write a song, knit a scarf - you get the idea.
