Celebrating what Spring means to us at Waterfall Mall

BOOK CLUB

A year ago we were celebrating the first issue of News Flash. On reflection it is hard to believe that a whole year – four seasons – have passed since. As we dust off all our warm weather clothes and sandals and retire our coats and boots for till next year, we look forward with hope and optimism that these next months will bring with them not just the much-needed rain but also the sense of rebirth that accompanies it.

Throughout the world Spring symbolises a time of rebirth and renewal. In South Africa - the North West especially - the sun shines brightly on us all year, but still the magic of the season isn't lost on us. As the earth warms, productivity increases, and here at Waterfall Mall that's par for the course.

While winter had its share of excitement, here at Waterfall Mall plans are afoot to make spring and summer something to remember. So we invite you to peruse our pages and discover new and exciting things including everything from make-up and clothes to food and décor. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, because we’re also expanding our social media presence. Please follow us on Facebook (waterfallmall.rustenburg) or Instagram (@waterfall_mall) to keep up with the day-to-day happenings and specials at the mall. With that we would like to extend our thanks as always for your loyal support and hope to see you in and around the mall in the coming months. Marlene Bouwer Centre Manager

The future is Virtual

How to: Sensational Social Media

Social media has changed our lives. Where we previously had to meet up with friends and family to engage in their lives, we can now keep in contact without ever seeing each other. Think about it; you may have friends living abroad who you haven’t spoken to in years, yet you know what’s going on in their everyday lives, from what they do for fun, who they are dating (or married to), what their dog’s name is and even what they had for dinner last night. The options are endless, and often we subscribe to and use multiple platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest. But have you ever posted what you thought was the best pic ever and no one “liked” it? And why do some of your friends seem to have the knack to make their lives seem picture perfect, literally. Research (actual research) has shown that the following tips can seriously up your Social Media game.

Whether you use an iPhone (Siri), Samsung Galaxy (Bixby), or any one of the other myriad of smart phones, you probably have a virtual assistant right in your pocket, and chances are you haven’t used it for half of what it can do.

But it isn't just our smart phones anymore. As these devices start integrating with our homes and cars, more and more individuals become involved with - sometimes reliant on - virtual reality without even knowing it.

While Apple’s Siri has been around for years and even had a starring role in an episode of The Big Bang Theory… Did you know that Siri can make reservations, phone calls, set reminders, identify music, check the weather, take photos (and selfies) and even call and Uber (amongst hundreds of other things)?

So how can you start using your virtual assistant today?

Bixby is the new kid on the block and made its first appearance in March of this year, but what it lacks in experience, it makes up for in ability. Bixby edits photos, send messages and composes emails on command. Anything you do on your phone via touch, you should be able to do by voice with Bixby. It can even identify certain products via the camera and will eventually be able to control other integrated smart devices in the home.

The lighter and brighter the image, the better (24 percent more likes). We’re given all the tools and filters in the world to improve our pics, but nothing beats natural light when it comes to collecting likes.

Give your followers more to look at: You can apparently generate up to 29% more likes by including more background and less close ups into your feed.

Images with lower saturation get more like than those with more vibrant colour (18 %). The array of filters available can assist you to tone it down.

Believe it or not… Duck face selfies can get you more likes too. It might only be 1,12% more, but its better than nothing.

Our favourites include Nashville, Crema and Rise (Instagram).

And there you have it… Now clean your feed and start generating some buzz.

Follow your favourite mall on

Next time you want to make a call, try asking your Virtual Assistant to find the number for you. Want to find an Italian restaurant in your area, the closest hospital, doctor or public park? Its no sweat - ask your virtual assistant to find one for you. Start small and soon you'll find yourself using the application all the time. Who knows, pretty soon you may be asking your new assistant to help you track down that pair of shoes or sunglasses you've always wanted but never knew where to find.

The Smoky Eye

www.sorbet.co.za

Threading is the new tweezing

When the occasion calls for it, every girl loves a smoky, mysterious eye. But just how do you get the effect. Well, we've mapped it out for you right here. What you'll need: Eye shadow palette of three shades from dark to light, eyeliner and mascara.

Threading is a method of hair removal originating in Asia. More recently it has gained popularity throughout the rest of the world and is used most often for shaping eyebrows. Threading allows for a more defined and precise shape and can create better definition for eyebrows. It is also used as a method of removing unwanted hair on the entire face and upper lip area.

The skinny on permanent make-up and extensions Have you ever wondered how celebrities seem to have the most perfect brows, endless eyelashes? Have you ever taken supplements or applied treatments to your own to make them fuller and more spectacular. Finally there is something you can do to make your eyes 'pop'. Read on to find out more about microblading and lash extensions.

Dream Girl Eyelash Extensions Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are used to enhance the length, fullness and thickness of natural eyelashes and are applied by glueing individual extensions to the eyelashes oneby-one. False eyelashes and eyelash extensions are NOT the same, as extensions look and feel natural and stay in place for up to a month and can be 'filled' in at any time.

Magical Microblading Microblading is a semi-permanent tattooing technique that is applied in tiny hair-like strokes, allowing you the luxury of a full brow without too much effort. www.waterfallmall.co.za

A design is chosen to suit your face and eye shape. You can decide just how full or delicate you want your brow to look.

The brow technician will apply a local aneasthetic to ensure a comfortable experience once the 'work' begins.

Tiny hair-like stokes are made with a micro-blade which creates extremely fine natural looking hair strokes.

The results? Perfectly natural looking, thick, full brows, that can last for as long as two years.

Your beautician will remove all traces of make-up and apply tape to your bottom lashes, to make sure they don't get any glue on them.

Glue is applied to each individual extension which are then stuck to each and every existing lash one by one. The process can last up to 2 hours

They new lashes may take a day or two to get used to, but from the minute you walk out of the salon door you will have the luscious lashes you've always dreamed of. Both Sorbet and Placecol offer eyebrow extensions, though availability may vary by store.

SPRING CLEAN YOUR EATING

After a long winter of indulging in comfort foods, you may feel like you need to spring clean your entire body for spring. The good news is it’s possible to detox the body and maybe drop a kilo or two by making a few changes to your daily intake Our foodies have put together a list of four foods to help detoxify, hydrate and refresh your body all naturally, just in time for spring!

Smoothies

Start your day on a healthy note by blending together a combination of yoghurt, nuts, veggies (such as kale, cucumber and celery) and berries to make a delicious smoothie. The leafy greens contain chlorophyll, a molecule that helps eliminate harmful environmental toxins that can contribute to illness and liver damage. The berries are chock full of antioxidants and enzymes help fight free-radical damage that may lead to disease, and their sweetness takes over the more bitter taste of the greens—you won’t even notice they’re in there. Added to that is the fact that the nuts supply a healthy dose of fats, omegas, fibre and vitamin E. Now you can see why smoothies (and smoothie bowls) have become the breakfast of choice for many.

This is a fantastic spin on a classic smoothie

Green Tea

Polyphenols, antioxidant-rich phytochemicals found in green tea leaves, help to detoxify the body by eliminating harmful free radicals. Studies have also shown that increased consumption of green tea may reduce your risk of several cancers. And that's not all: Research has linked drinking green tea to improving memory and reducing belly fat when combined with exercise, thanks to the catechin EGCG, a powerful antioxidant.

Cabbage

Cabbage - made up of approximately 92% water - is a natural diuretic that can help expel excess fluids from the body. So you can’t go wrong by filling up on this water-based food. It’s packed with glucosinolates,

flavour, texture and nutrition. INGREDIENTS

»» 3 tablespoons Greek yoghurt »» 1 cup mixed frozen berries of your choice »» 1 banana, chopped »» ½ cup almond milk »» 1 teaspoon honey/maple syrup (optional) »» 2 tablespoons mixed breakfast seeds (pumpkin seeds, linseeds and sunflower seeds)

Pineapple

Fresh pineapple is not only sweet and delicious, but it also aids in detoxing your body, thanks to the presence of bromelian, a powerful digestive enzyme. This enzyme has been proven to aid in digesting protein, breaking down fats, as well as reducing inflammation. Pineapple is also packed with manganese, which has been recommended by nutritionists as a way to boost your mood.

organic compounds that contain nitrogen and sulphur which help flush out unwanted toxins. Plus, cabbage delivers a good dose of many essential vitamins, including C, K, E and A, as well as minerals, dietary fibre and folic acid.

fill up a water bottle for the next time you hit the gym. Simply slice a few strawberries and drop in a few mint leaves. Tear up or bruise the leaves before you add them to the berries and water to release even more minty flavour.

Watermelon Basil Water Fill your glass with watermelon, basil leaves and ice. Allow it to stand for a while and enjoy this

sweet and deliciously refreshing water infusion.

Drinking a litre or two of water infused with lemon (or adding lemon to a mug of hot water) is a proven strategy to help cleanse your body. Lemons also have antibacterial properties that help purify the blood and balance the pH level of your colon. The citrus fruit's vitamin C will also help boost your immunity and you’re getting your daily dose of H 2O at the same time.

Mojito Mix Come happy hour, dump the alcohol and opt for this mojito water instead. Mint and plenty of lime make for a light and tart beverage that’s not just refreshing, but delicious enough that you won’t even miss the alcoholic version. Add a touch of sugar if you’re really looking to trick your taste buds. Rainbow Citrus Water For this recipe, you can add as many different types of citrus as you please, like grapefruit, oranges, clementines, lemons and limes! The result: A gorgeous spectrum of colour filling your glass to the brim.

COLOUR SPLASH - SPRING HAS SPRUNG This year has been a vibrant and exciting year in terms of interior décor trends. And with spring in full bloom, this season’s trends are sure to inspire. With a rainbow spectrum of colours en vogue, there is likely to be something for everyone despite your home’s existing colour palette.

While it’s never wise to throw the entire rainbow at one room, with a carefully curated selection of feature items, such as chairs and couches, or tables and ottomans, as well as stand out accessories and décor, you can transform your neutral home into a spring sensation.

Thus far this year we have seen green repeated over and over in all hues and tropical applications. This season, décor experts are inviting you to expand your horizons and call on vibrant jewel tones such a deep royal blue, cerise and emerald green to enhance your favourite space.

Additionally, the authorities advise that ethnic prints and patterns from across the globe are making a comeback in everything from textiles and crockery to photo frames and lanterns. The limits are endless and with a bit of custom colouring, you can bring a bit of spring into everyday.
