BlUe sky Project
University of Maine President Paul Ferguson has officially released a strategic plan that creates a blueprint for the state’s flagship public university to become one of the most distinctive universities in the country for student achievement and community engagement. The plan, “The Blue Sky Project: Reaffirming Public Higher Education at Maine’s Flagship University,” was accepted by the University of Maine System trustees at their board meeting in Bangor July 9. “This plan isn’t just about making the University of Maine a bigger, better and more financially sustainable institution,” says Ferguson. “It also is about reconnecting the university to the people of Maine so that we can have a major impact on the future growth and prosperity of our state in the 21st century.” The plan is centered around investing in UMaine’s existing areas of distinction and launching a number of new initiatives to better align the university’s resources and programs with the needs of the state. It outlines five strategic pathways, summarized as the “Five M’s,” and a series of related initiatives and strategies to transform UMaine in the next five years: Maine’s Renewal – Ensure that UMaine teaching, research, outreach, workforce and economic development program excellence are in close alignment with Maine’s priority needs. Initiatives include increasing campus/private sector partnerships by 50 percent in the next five years, and aligning technology and educational programs with Maine’s economic infrastructure needs. Money and Management – Optimize operating efficiencies and control expenditures within a financially sustainable business model, and seek new and entrepreneurial revenue sources. Initiatives include a new enrollment management unit and a plan to potentially increase enrollment to 15,000 (from 11,168 in 2012), increasing the number of out-of-state and international students, and increasing academic partnerships with Maine’s community colleges.
Morale and Marketing – Invest in faculty and staff professional development, refresh the UMaine brand and improve communication among all constituencies. Initiatives include establishing consistent and high-quality brand standards to better promote UMaine, harnessing the goodwill of alumni for student internships and career networking, and promoting UMaine’s role in athletics as the state’s only NCAA Division I school. Mentoring and Modeling – Promote undergraduate and graduate opportunities for student success, including value-added residential life, research fellowships, internships, and more effective advising and learning environments. Initiatives include developing new models for learning to better prepare graduates for meaningful jobs and lives, establishing an outcomes-based assessment of all academic programs, and increasing the number of externally funded opportunities for hands-on student research. Master Plan and Maintenance – Restore and create UMaine’s physical plant and technology infrastructure to ensure a vibrant place of learning and discovery. Initiatives include a Total Cost of Ownership (TOC) approach to managing UMaine’s $1 billion in infrastructure and real estate, fully funding appropriate levels of campus upkeep and beautification, and continuing to implement campus sustainability initiatives. Ferguson, who came to UMaine in July 2011 and was formally inaugurated as the 19th president this past April, began the “Blue Sky” project shortly after arriving on campus. From November 2011 to April of this year, a 26-member leadership team, made up of faculty, staff, students and alumni, met weekly to develop the plan. More than 30 informational meetings attracted hundreds of participants and more than 250 contributors submitted “blue sky ideas.” “This has been a comprehensive, inclusive process that has united the entire University community around a renewed sense of pride, purpose and commitment to serving the people of Maine,” Ferguson says. “There is much work to be done, but we see blues skies ahead for this great University and the State of Maine.” 2012-13 Swimming and Diving Media Guide 7

What Graduates Are Saying Kelly Newton (field hockey): “Being a student-athlete at the University of Maine has changed my life forever. The friends I have made and the memories I will take away with me are irreplaceable. Throughout the last four years, I have come to learn the true meaning of dedication, and that hard work really does pay off. I am proud to say that the University of Maine has made me a better person.” Brian Landry (men’s swimming): “Being a student-athlete here at UMaine the past four years has given me opportunities and taught me life lessons I could not have gotten anywhere else. Competing at UMaine added another dimension to my college career, prompting me to be more focused and dedicated to everything I did. I will cherish the times spent at practice and competitions. As said last year by teammate Jeremy Bender, “when you are gone you’re always a Black Bear.” Jillian O’Brien (women’s track): “During the last four years as a Black Bear, I have learned and experienced more than I ever thought possible to prepare me to be a strong, successful professional in the future. The University of Maine gave me an opportunity to get a great college education and a place to take my athletic ability to the next level. Once a Black Bear, always a Black Bear.” Andrew Rogers (men’s basketball): “I could not be prouder to declare that I am a Black Bear student-athlete. These last four years of embracing the role of two full-time jobs, being both a student and an athlete, have helped shape me as a young man. Hard work, perseverance, dedication and facing challenges head on are all daily requirements as a student-athlete. As Black Bears, it’s great to know that we will take these same characteristics into the game of life. Go Blue!” Ashley Kelley (softball): “As a member of the athletics family, I have been fortunate to meet many wonderful people while traveling around the country representing my school. Balancing classes, workouts, travel and competing at the highest level have given me the skills and confidence to be successful after graduation. The Athletics Department gives you the guidance necessary to excel on and off the field. You come in from high school as an individual but leave as a part of something really special.”

n 1971, the University of Maine Swimming and Diving program began upon the completion of the Stanley M. Wallace Pool, one of the top swimming and diving facilities in the region. Through 37 years of competition, Maine has enjoyed much success, including several New England Championships. From the beginning, 19-year head coach Alan Switzer’s program was committed to excellence both as individuals and as a team. Switzer, who started the men’s program, was joined by Jeff Wren, who served as head of the women’s program. Under Switzer, the men’s program won two New England championships, before moving to the Eastern Seaboards and Eastern Intercollegiates in 1979. The 1989–90 season saw the men’s team return to the New Englands with a fourth-place finish. The next two seasons, the men placed fifth. In 1992–93, only the Maine divers competed, thus completing a transition towards prioritizing the North Atlantic Conference (now America East) Championship. The women’s program has enjoyed comparable success, winning six New England titles (1978, ’79, ’80, ’84, ’86 and ’87). Wren’s teams finished shy of the top three places just three times in a span of 15 years. Maine has consistently enjoyed one of the largest squads in the region, and team unity, with all members contributing, has been a cornerstone of Wren’s teams. Upon the retirement of Switzer, both programs fell under Wren. Wren had been a part of the women’s program since it began in 1971. The combination of the two programs required much of the training, and all of the meets, to be conducted simultaneously. Both programs have respectable dual meet records. The women have suffered just nine losing seasons since becoming an intercollegiate activity in 1973 and post an impressive record of 187 wins and 127 losses. The men have been consistently successful and enjoy an overall record of 180-181. There is a lot of energy and optimism to continue the winning tradition as the two groups combine efforts for an 17th season together. The Maine swimming program endured its greatest challenge over a decade ago. With budget cuts threatening its existence, the program received overwhelming support, even revitalization. Maine alums Stephen and Tabitha King stepped forward with a generous donation and others followed, meeting the fiscal demands of the program. Maine swimming and diving now relies upon the athletic department and the Maine Swimming and Diving Endowment in order to continue its growth. In addition to success in the pool, Maine swimmers have excelled in the classroom. During the 2006-2007 season the University of Maine Swimming team broke several individual records. In a great moment for the men’s program, senior Chris Card broke the 100 yard breast stroke record with a time of 57.22 seconds only to have teammate Nathan Richard break his record moments later, setting the school record at 56.79. Richard also set new school records in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Jessie Ellis Alcaide set a new school record in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, the 50 yard record previously held by her sister Katrine. Colleen Miller also set new school records in the 200, 1000 and 1650 yard freestyle. In 2007-08 the University of Maine Swimming team saw tremendous individual progress at the America East Championships. The women’s Colleen Miller placed fifth in the 500 freestyle. Caitlin Shelly finished 10th and Kristin Fenton was 14th in the 200 IM. The Men’s team saw freshman
the 1990 season. The women finished the season at 5-6 and scored 237 points at the Championships, improving on their 209 point finish from a year ago. In 2011-12, the Black Bears welcomed in several newcomers who had an immediate impact on the program as the two squads combined to break a total of 19 school-records. The Black Bear swimming and diving teams, the only swimming and diving programs offered in the state university system, are fortunate to have one of the most outstanding facilities in the Northeast, the Stanley M. Wallace Pool. Its eight lanes measure 25 yards by 25 meters, with a separate diving area and a full eight-line Colorado scoring and judging system. The 25 yards by 25 meters dimensions of the pool allowed Maine to host a unique meet, the Black Bear Invitational, an event that featured events swam in both yards, as most NCAA meets

Jeremy Bender swim to a 14th place finish in the 500 freestyle. The Black Bears had several solid performances at the 2009-10 America East Championships. Senior Meghann Fisher and freshman Jenn Trodden each broke records in the breaststroke events before Trodden eventually locked up the records in both the 100 and 200 breast. Junior Jeremy Bender broke the school record in the 400 IM. The 400 IM record had stood firm since Don Winant set the mark over 30 years prior. The program continued to build success in coach Susan Lizzotte’s second year at the helm. The men’s team improved to 5-3 with a fourth-place finish, their highest placing at the Championships since

Wallace Pool has been the site of the America East Conference Championship eight times since 1990, most recently on Feb. 14-18, 2008, and will host the 2012-13 Championships. The Michael and Georgia Latti fitness center, is located immediately adjacent to the pool. The diving program is supplemented by a trampoline, dryboard, and a one-meter platform, all located on the deck. These facilities, coupled with the dedication of past and present coaches and swimmers, have provided Maine with one of the most successful swimming and diving programs in the Northeast.

Coaching Staff and Season Outlook SUSAN LIZZOTTE
Head Coach Fourth Season Maine ‘99
Lizzotte returns for her fourth season as head coach of the Maine swimming and diving teams and her 13th overall season as a coach at Maine. In her third season with the Black Bears, Lizzotte continued to build the program up along with bringing in several key contributors in her recruiting efforts. Under Lizzotte’s guidance at the 2012 America East Championships, a total of 19-school records fell as each team continued to build. On the women’s side the squad scored 70.5 points higher than the season before while finishing in sixth place, its best finish under Lizzotte’s leadership. On the men’s side, a number of records continued to fall as the men continued to climb, finishing fifth overall in the conference. In 2011-12, Lizzotte and her staff continued to bring in the talent needed to rise to the top of the standings as numerous underclassmen made an immediate impact in the pool with several records falling to the likes of freshmen. The swimming and diving program continues on the incline as both squads showed solid improvements during the 2010-11 campaign. The men’s team improved its record to 5-3 and earned a fourth-place finish at the America East Championships, its highest finish since the 1990 season. The women also made significant advances as they finished at 5-6, scoring 237 points at the Championships, an advancement from the year before in which they tallied 209 points. The records continued to fall under Lizzotte in 2010-11 as Jeremy Bender improved his own record in the 400 IM to a time of 4:05.52 while Andrew Meehan set a new mark in the 100 fly at 50.71. The women really turned things up under Lizzotte’s guidance in her second year as seven records fell. Caitlin Shelley snapped the 100 breast and 200 IM records as Erica Smircina, Lauren Thornbrough and Jenn Trodden put new marks on the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 breast. The women’s team also set new records in both the 200 and 400 medley relays. Lizzotte had a very successful first season at the helm of the Black Bears’ swimming and diving teams. Both teams improved in the wins column from the year before under Lizzotte’s guidance and leadership. Maine also broke school records in six different events at the America East Championships. Lizzotte had a hand in breaking her own record in the 200 fly as she coached senior Meag Fisher to the new school-record in 2010. Lizzotte finished an outstanding career swimming for the Black Bears in 1999, and joined the program as an assistant coach in 2000. A four-year MVP of the program, she won four America East individual event titles, set six school records and earned two scholar athlete awards before graduating in 1999. She served as captain her senior year. Her leadership, work ethic and ability to bring out the best in others have made her a great addition to the Maine coaching staff. Susan and her husband, Jaret, have two children, Jackson and Olivia.
