Publisher’s Welcome
Welcome to Northeast Harbor! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, museum listings, church services, maps of Northeast Harbor, Cranberry Islands, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor as well as a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for visitors and residents alike. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Northeast Harbor Port Directory. This is not the Port Directory I had envisioned a few short months ago. This is Maine’s 200th birthday, and there were going to be special events. You will notice that there is no Calendar of Events this year. Everything is evolving very quickly; many events have been canceled and too many businesses are unsure of their future. If a business requests masks, allows only a certain number of people, and/or is out of items you were planning on getting, please remember to be kind and patient. We all want our locals and visitors to stay healthy and happy!

The Port Directory Featured Hike Parkman Mountain
Beginning and Ending at the Norumbega Mountain Parking Area on Route 198 Approximately 2.5 miles round trip This hike was initially featured in 2009 All photos in this section are Š Bayside Graphics unless otherwise noted.
If you only have time to climb one mountain while on Mount Desert Island, you might want to consider Parkman Mountain. For a relatively short trip, you get a varied hike with great views. There is lots of water going up, and lots of views coming back down. From Northeast Harbor, take Route 198 north for 2.3 miles and park in the long, narrow parking area on the left. From Somesville, take Route 198 for 4 miles and the same parking area will be on your right. The trail up Norumbega Mountain leaves from this parking lot, but you are going to cross the road and take the Hadlock Brook Trail. The trail descends a little to cross a stream. About 100 yards in the Parkman Mountain Trail bears left. Stay to the right here and a little further on stay right again and follow the sign for Maple Spring and Hadlock Brook Trails. You will come to a carriage road shortly after, which you should cross and continue on the Hadlock Brook trail. You will next climb moderately over ledges and through a pine and spruce forest with the carriage road below you on the right. As the trail flattens out near Hadlock Brook, you will come to where the Hadlock Brook Trail bears off to the right and the Maple Spring trail bears off to the left. This is also the general area where Deer Brook coming down from the left and Hadlock Brook coming down from the right converge and continue on down as Hadlock Brook. You are going to bear left here

on the Maple Spring Trail and follow the course of Deer Brook. The Maple Spring Trail climbs gradually with Deer Brook below you on the right. Further on you will descend to the brook over stone steps and hike along its banks, then cross the brook and climb the opposite bank. As you continue along the right bank of Deer Brook, the large granite face of Deer Brook Bridge looms ahead. The trail continues under the bridge still on the left bank. The bridge you are going under is part of the Carriage Road system of graded dirt roads that weave around the mountains on this part of Mount Desert Island. If you wish to explore this area a bit, go up the stone steps that rise to the right before you go under the SW Cycle 2014 red 4/24/14 7:36 PM bridge. Once you reach the road, you can go to the right to see Waterfall Bridge, which is essentially a twin of Deer Brook Bridge. As you look at the beautiful stonework of the bridges, it seems they are made entirely of granite blocks. Actually, the bridges are made of steelreinforced concrete with granite facing. These bridges, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and many talented laborers, are a big reason why the Carriage Roads are service - sales - rentals more than a woods road. 370 Main Street • Southwest Harbor Return back to the trail by going down 244-5856 the same stone steps and under the www.southwestcycle.com Continued p. 8

Deer Brook Bridge. Be careful to be on the correct bridge as Waterfall Bridge has very similar stone steps that descend to Hadlock Brook. You still want to be on the Maple Spring Trail, which goes under the Deer Brook Bridge. As you continue to ascend, you will follow the course of Deer Brook, which becomes a shallow gorge. There are a few crossings on this part of the trail, so watch your footing, as wet rocks can be slippery. This is the last chance for reliable water. So, if you are thirsty or have an empty water bottle, you might want to fill up here, especially on a hot, humid day. We need to point out here that even though mountain spring water is clear, cold and delicious, it may not be safe to drink. Any untreated water may contain parasites or other impurities. While these nasty things probably won’t kill you, they could make you pretty sick for a while. Solutions are a steri pen, (about $100), a compact water filter, (about $50), or tablets, (about $15). Regardless of whether you want to treat your water or “risk it”, you should take your water from a fast moving place and not water that is standing still. Further on Deer Brook splits. Take the left fork and then a left on The Giant Slide Trail. Go past Bald Mountain Trail on the left as the terrain levels out a bit as Deer Brook dwindles down to a trickle. The next stretch is more open woods as the cliffs of Bald Peak tower above on the left. Continuing on for about 1/4 mile, the Giant Slide Trail descends gently to a trail intersection. You have gone 1.2 miles so far and are roughly at the halfway point. Here you will turn left on Parkman Mountain Trail and descend to cross a small streambed. As you begin to climb Parkman Mountain, you will notice that the trail is not marked very well in this section. There are faded blue paint blazes occasionally and some rock cairns, (small piles), on the ledges above, but this section will require you to concentrate on the trail in order to stay on it. Look for stone steps and the “path of least resistance”. In 1/4 mile, you’ll scramble over some ledges and reach the summit of Parkman Mountain. The views here are outstanding. To the east is Sargent Mountain with Gilmore Peak in the foreground. To the south: Bald Peak, Upper Hadlock Pond and the Cranberry Isles (pictured). To the west: Norumbega Mountain and Blue Hill. To the north: Somesville and the Mainland. In late summer, you should find some blueberry bushes © Katie Dyer with fruit on the ledges here. As you descend Parkman Mountain, moving in a southerly direction, you will descend to Bald Mountain Trail which forks off to the left. You will continue straight on the Parkman Mountain trail. Continuing to descend over ledges and then into the woods, the trail crosses the Carriage Road three times before meeting up again with the Hadlock Brook Trail. Turn right here, and in a short distance, return to Route 198 and your car. Throughout your hike be sure to both look up and down to see some of the treasures you might otherwise miss!

Local Hands Reaching Out This is the fourteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. With food insecurity reaching so many people, this year we are focusing on the two different food pantries on Mount Desert Island. This article features the Bar Harbor Food Pantry. All photos in this article are used by permission of Bar Harbor Food Pantry. The Bar Harbor Food Pantry is located on the basement level of the YWCA at 36 Mount Desert Street in Bar Harbor. We have been serving all of Hancock County since 1994. Prior to COVID-19, the pantry was open Tuesday 9am to 12 noon and Thursday 4pm - 6pm. We were an “open shopping floor” pantry. We believe in providing a space for client autonomy and choice, we also see less food waste operating in this capacity. In less than Stocked shelves at the Food Pantry. 24hrs, we had to close our open hours to the public and shift to appointments for contact-less pick-ups. We are now taking appointments Tuesday - Thursday from 9am to 2pm. Every day we miss operating in our “usual” way. We miss the conversations with clients, the jokes and laughter. The pantry is a large family, and we deeply miss seeing our neighbors and knowing they are doing well. Out of chaos comes beauty, and from the all of this, we have created a new distribution program, Fresh Food Fridays. Each Friday we offer a no appointment necessary, curbside pick-up of any fresh food items we have left from our weekly order. This has been a great way to get extra food to those in need, and to reduce food waste. All community members are welcome, and it’s Part of the monthly order from been very success- Good Shepherd Food Bank. ful. We plan to maintain this program in the future! We have served 356 households; 802 individuals, an increase of 25% since the stay at home order went into effect. Times are uncertain for many of our community members. In the midst of chaos, the anxiety and the uncertainty, we will be here. We are resilient, we are adaptative, innovative and creative. Rest assured, we will move beyond this and hopefully we can gather for a meal soon to celebrate our strength.
Jenny Jones (director) and Sara Graves (pantry manager) at curbside Friday distribution.
We are spending this time to update equipment and freshen up our physical space. We hope to have the pantry ready to re-open in our normal capacity by early fall. Thank you all, we couldn’t end hunger without you! For more information or to make a donation call 288-3375 or www.barharborfoodpantry.org

I started baking beans with my grandmother about 1960. She was the family cook and did all the holiday gatherings. However she was barely literate and never used a written recipe, so this one is from my memory the way I learned and evolved it over the past 60 years. Dana Noftle
Baked Beans 1 pound dry beans Depending on taste, I like larger beans grown in Maine if I can find them (e.g. soldier beans, Jacobs cattle beans). Traditional yellow eye and red kidney are similar but need less cooking time. Pea beans are good too. 1 cup dark molasses I use only molasses and no sugar because molasses adds color and flavor with less sweetness so I can use more of it if I skip the sugar. 1 small/medium onion peeled and quartered 1 Tbsp. dry mustard powder 1 tsp. chili powder 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4-1/2 pound lean fat pork (yes an oxymoron). Today bean pork comes in a cryovac pack near the ham slices in the grocery store. The stuff I use is pork belly, salt-cured, not smoked, and has a layer of lean meat over a layer of fat (followed with the rind). The unused portion keeps in the freezer for years. Water to keep beans covered during cooking, adding as needed Carefully inspect the dry beans and discard rocks and bean fragments. Place in a large bowl and fill with cold water. Set aside overnight, checking to ensure the beans are submerged. In the morning they should have absorbed most of the water and be restored to their original size before they were dried. Place the beans in a bean pot. My grandmother used an early type of slow cooker. It was a counter-top appliance but wasn’t all that slow. So a modern slow cooker on a medium or high setting would be about the same thing. I use a 4-quart clay crock in the oven so I have more control over the heat. To the beans add all the ingredients – onion, molasses, mustard, chili powder, pepper, and water to an inch over the beans. Stir it up to mix the thick molasses with the water and other ingredients. You can cut half-way through the pork from the lean side half-way to the rind leaving the rind intact if you want pork pieces in the beans, or leave it as a single piece that you can pick at when they are done. Place the pork on top of the beans rind-side down, lean side up half submerged in the broth.

Bake in a slow oven 250-300Ëš for about 6 hours. There is a lot of variability in temperature and cooking time depending on the beans and you can adjust both as needed. Mainegrown beans take a long time and develop lots of color and flavor (which is why I like them). Supermarket beans take less time. Cook them slowly (low temperature), but hot enough to caramelize the molasses for flavor and color. They should maintain a slow simmer. During cooking add enough water to keep the beans covered. Test them every so often. They are done when they are done so be patient.

Brown Bread - Gluten Free 70 grams about 1/2 cup gluten-free cornmeal 70 grams about 1/2 cup teff flour 70 grams about 1/2 cup all-purpose gluten-free flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/3 cup molasses 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 large egg 1 Tbsp. grated orange rind 1/3 cup currants
Preheat oven to 300°. Combine the first six ingredients in a medium bowl. Combine molasses and remaining ingredients in a bowl or measuring cup. Add molasses mixture to flour mixture and stir until just combined. Pour batter into a 11-ounce coffee can, generously sprayed inside with cooking spray. Cover lid of coffee can with foil. Place can in a medium saucepan and fill oven-proof saucepan with warm water till water reaches about half-way up the side of the coffee can. Bring water to a boil over high heat. Transfer saucepan to oven and bake at 300° for 2 1/2 hours or until bread is done. A toothpick inserted in the middle of the bread should come out clean when bread is done. Boston Brown Bread Recipe Butter for greasing loaf pans or coffee cans 1/2 cup (heaping) all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (heaping) rye flour 1/2 cup (heaping) finely ground corn meal (must be finely ground) 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. allspice 1/2 cup raisins (optional) 1 cup buttermilk 1 tsp. vanilla extract (optional) 1/2 cup molasses (any kind) One metal 6-inch tall by 4-inch diameter coffee can, or a 4x8 loaf pan
You can either make the bread on the stovetop with a coffee can, or you can make it in the oven with a coffee can or loaf pan. Stovetop: If you are using the stovetop method, set the steamer rack inside a tall stockpot and fill the pot with enough water to come 1/3 of the way up the sides of your coffee can. Turn the burner on to medium as you work. Oven: If you are using the oven method, preheat the oven to 325°F and bring a large pot of water to a boil. Grease a coffee can or small loaf pan with butter. In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, rye flour, corn meal, baking powder and soda, salt and allspice. Add the raisins if using. In another bowl, mix together the buttermilk and vanilla extract if using. Whisk in the molasses. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir well with a spoon. Pour the batter into the coffee can or loaf pan taking care that the batter not reach higher than 2/3 up the sides of the container. Cover the loaf pan or coffee can tightly with foil. Prepare steam environment on stovetop or oven: Stovetop: If you are using the stovetop method, set the can in the pot on the steamer rack. Make sure there is enough water in the pot to come up 1/3 of the way up the sides of your coffee can or loaf pan. Cover the pot and turn the heat to high. Oven: If you are using the oven method, find a high-sided roasting pan that can hold the coffee can or loaf pan. Pour the boiling water into the roasting pan until it reaches one third up the side of the coffee can or loaf pan. Put the roasting pan into the 325°F oven. Steam the bread on the stovetop or in the oven for at least 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Let’s Go Canoeing on Long Pond! Beginning and ending at the boat launch on Pretty Marsh Road (North end of Long Pond) Approximately 5 miles This canoe trip was initially featured in 2010 All photos in this section are © Bayside Graphics unless othwise noted.
Long Pond is the largest body of fresh water on Mount Desert Island and is 4 miles from north end to south end. Our trip will feature the northern end of the pond. To get to the boat launch, turn onto Route 102 in Somesville at the blinking light next to the fire station. Follow Route 102 for 1.5 miles, the landing is on your left. There is limited parking on Route 102, but there is a parking lot across the street. In the event that you don’t have a canoe or kayak, there are rentals on site and at a few in-town locations on Mount Desert Island. The launch location for canoes and kayaks is to the left of the dock on the sloping concrete pad. We did our trip in a canoe. Once you have cast off, you will proceed south for 1.25 miles up the narrow north end of the pond. Ahead loom Bernard, Mansell and Beech Mountains. To the right and left you’ll see many fine shoreline properties. As you paddle along you may begin to wonder, “Should I paddle down the middle or along the shore?” To help you with your decision consider this, the shore is less windy, less choppy, less traffic, and a shorter swim. The middle is deeper and therefore, has fewer rocks that can scrape your bottom. We stayed close to the shore when we could, which was not that often due to rocks that were apparently close to the surface. These rocks are erratic boulders left behind from the last receding glaciers. There are two buoys that we decided to go between. They are not
36 - Northeast Harbor Port Directory
www.visitnortheastharbor.com
very far from the launch, and are red and green. We think they are more for motorboats, but we decided to follow suit. As you proceed down the pond, you should probably stay to the right side, as you will be turning that way as you pass by the end of Northern Neck, a peninsula that juts into Long Pond that separates the eastern and western sections of northern Long Pond. As you turn to the right and circle around the end of Northern Neck, you will need to pass to the left of the pile of rocks sticking out of the water that indicates an area to the right that is too shallow to navigate. We wonder if you might think what we did, “we’d like to own that,” as we passed the lovely shoreline “camps” on Northern Neck. At this point, at the tip of Northern Neck, we saw a bald eagle circling repeatedly over the point. Continuing around Northern Neck, you will begin to head north. You will need to work your way over to the other shore because your destination is Rum Island, which is part of Acadia National Park. As you proceed north, Rum Island is about 1/3 mile further, close to the western shore. Rum Island is no more than an acre and is a very nice place to rest and have a snack or maybe a lovely picnic. Hopefully there won’t be a lot of people when you arrive because there is probably not room for more than ten without feeling crowded. Please don’t leave anything. This is a pristine place. There are a few places to land on the Local Libraries

island. We chose the most obvious which is on the southern shore, right there on your approach. We saw a fellow paddler who had hauled his kayak right up onto the rocks. Once you’re ready to leave Rum Island, you will stay close to the western shore of Long Pond. You are now entering the wilder part of the trip. What we mean by “wilder” is that the western shore of Long Pond is almost exclusively Acadia National Park. We paddled close to the shore as we proceeded south down the western side of the pond and what was apparent all of a sudden was, this looked like wilderness. Sure if you strain to the eastern shore, you can make out some signs of civilization. But the further south you go into the bay formed by Southern Neck, you enter a quiet, natural place that is one of the most remote locations on Mount Desert Island. On the left you will see the Long Pond Fire Road, which is featured in this year’s Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. We paddled around this area to the left and worked our way back north. We saw loons here and thought this would be a good place to fish. Make sure you have a fishing license, as they are required for fresh water fishing in Maine. As you proceed northerly up and past the western shore of Southern Neck, you will enter more open water, which is the “crossroads” of the pond. Your goal is to enter the northern end of the pond where you started. Depending how choppy the water is, you can choose to cut across to the shore opposite of the one that you came down or

retrace your course and cross over closer to Northern Neck. Either way you are heading back to your launch site. As you return you can check out the small cove on the eastern shore that passes close to Ripples Road. This is the outlet of Long Pond as it flows into Ripples Pond, which flows into Somes Pond, which flows into Somes Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. As you near the northern end of Long Pond you will pull out your boat on the same concrete pad that you put in on. We hope you enjoy your trip to this beautiful pond on Mount Desert Island. Each time of year it will be a bit different. We went in the spring — the loons and other wildlife were just coming back. We look forward to enjoying this same trip during the summer ... the baby loons will have hatched, the lily pads will be out, it will look quite different. If you go in the fall (my favorite time of year), you will see the magnificent colors of the trees and enjoy the crisp air. If you would like to share your trip with us, or make suggestions, please write to us at Bayside Graphics, PO Box 55, Mount Desert, ME 04660 or email us at baysidegraphics@roadrunner.com.

Foliage by Numbers - Why leaves change colors in four easy lessons 1. Each spring leaves contain green, red, orange and yellow pigments. Throughout the summer, the green is dominant due to chlorophyll production. 2. Many factors influence autumn coloration; the most important being day length, followed by rainfall, sugar accumulations in the leaves, wind and prolonged periods of cool, bright, sunny autumn weather without a killing frost. The brighter the light during this period, the greater the production of those pigments. 3. When the days of autumn are sunny and cool, the nights chilly but not freezing, the brightest colorations usually develop. This is when the production of chlorophyll, which is created by sunlight during photosynthesis, slows down. 4. As sunlight hours decrease, the green starts to disappear and the other, underlying pigments - red, orange, yellow, scarlet and purple - begin to show. Meanwhile the tree produces a waxy substance to protect itself from the elements once a leaf separates from the branch. That’s why leaves can withstand strong wind and rain during the summer, but come down so easily during a fall rainstorm. For updates, check out www.state.me.us/doc/foliage
