Mons, Love at first sight In the heart of Europe, a few dozen kilometres from Brussels, Mons holds within its walls treasures acquired over centuries which are definitely worth an extensive visit. Its numerous monuments, churches and individual houses bare witness to its glorious history. The year 2015 was also one year of urban metamorphosis for Mons as, being the European Capital of Culture, it morphed into a template for architectural experimentation, blending the past and the future, the old and the new. Start off from the Square du Château where the Belfry stands and gaze down on the city and its surroundings. Then, give in to the temptation of its old streets, parks and gardens. Discover the riches of its architecture, both civil and religious; especially its 12 churches and chapels, including Saint Waudru Collegiate church, a remarkable Gothic edifice, and the City Hall, which dates back to the 15th century. Go and discover the rich collections of its museums, including those of the new museums which were inaugurated in this exceptional cultural year. Then have a break and relax at a cosy restaurant table where fine food and gastronomy prevail. You will come back to Mons to experience the exhilaration of its traditional celebrations which are such a source of joy for its population. Once you will have done all of this, you will understand and, hopefully, love what makes our city so unique and so youthful. See you on, 22 May 2016 for the “Doudou” - the “Ducasse” of Mons - with its plurisecular procession of the “Car d’Or” and St-George’s Legendary fight with the dragon, also known as the “Lumeçon”.

To name but a few : the French Abbey of Hasnon, an important construction built in the classical Montois style in the 1st half of the 18th century; the Abbey of Liessies dated 1633 and modified in the 18th century; the Abbey of Bélian, a rich building erected in 1775 according to Charles-Emmanuel Foison’s building plans; the Abbey of Aulne, housed in the hotel of the knights of Malta, in the 2nd half of the 18th century; along with many others.

w Mons the litterary city > 2-hour walking tour / from €90

During her visit of the Verlaine exhibition in 2015, Patti Smith wrote an original poem on the wall of the prison of Mons.

Victor Hugo once wrote “Mons is a charming city” and it still is. From a literary perspective, it is first and foremost a surprising city which is full of poetry. Walk in the footsteps of the Poets – locals and ousiders alike - who once lived within its walls and drew their inspiration from the city. Your tour will be punctuated by texts evoking the places you see around you; from the Grand-Place – praised by Victor Hugo – to the prison - where the great Paul Verlaine was imprisoned. Here you will also be able to discover an original poem - the size of a notebook page – handwritten by Patti Smith when she visited the exhibition dedicated to the “poète maudit” (accursed poet) Paul Verlaine, in 2015.

Once a year, during the weekend of Trinity, all the people of Mons go into a frenzy to celebrate the traditional ducasse known as the Doudou. In 2005 the celebration was recognised by UNESCO. The Van Gogh house - Wasmes Rue Wilson, 221 - 7340 Wasmes (Colfontaine) Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM to 4PM. On weekdays, only group visits (booking required) (except on Mondays and Wednesday afternoons) In December 1878, Vincent Van Gogh moved into a room with a view on the Marcasse coal-mining site. The house belonged to a local baker called Jean-Baptiste Denis. At this time, Van Gogh was fully devoted to his evangelical mission, alternating Bible readings, religious ceremonies, visiting sick people and preaching. © visitMons / Grégory Mathelot The house in Wasmes had been in danger of falling into ruin for years. All that remained were the front wall and the front flap of the roof, which could barely hold on to the few remains of the roof structure. The Mons 2015 Foundation, the city of Colfontaine – which took part in the project – and companies sponsoring the foundation were, therefore, intent on recreating the spirit of the place, rather than on restoring the place itself, for which there remained no plans or historical records anyway.

EXHIBITIONS 2016 This is not Europe ! 120 caricatures about current events From 21 February to 26 June 2016 Mons Memorial Museum Boulevard Dolez, 51 – 7000 Mons www.monsmemorialmuseum.mons.be “At a time when the EU – single example in history of a peaceful construction – is faced with an influx of refugees fleeing poverty, barbarity or war, while being itself subject to a deep identity crisis, this collection of a hundred little drawings will attempt to explore a dozen of the designs on the agenda that are shaking the old continent”. (Nicolas Vadot – commissioner of the exhibition, September 8 2015)

© Plantu

Being a place for exchange and debate and a museum about war and society, the Mons Memorial Museum will exhibit 120 caricatures, mostly European but also including some from Russia or the US. These press cartoons will invite younger and older people to meditate upon the rise of nationalism and extremism occurring throughout Europe. At a time when the EU is experiencing numerous crises, this exhibition will allow you to discover the humorous, cynical or emotional take cartoonists have on our society. Some – like Kroll, Vadot or Plantu – are quite famous in our country – but hundreds of other cartoonists also work daily to defend our freedom of speech and spark debate. It is their work that you will discover in this exhibition “This is not Europe! 120 caricatures about current events” The exhibition was coproduced by Mons Memorial Museum and Cartooning for Peace; an association created by the famous french cartoonist Plantu and the former secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan in 2006. The founding principles of Cartooning for peace consist in going beyond the boundaries, be they geographical or within the minds of of each and every one of us. Mapping Knowledge From 27 June 2015 to 29 may 2016 From Tuesday to Friday, from 1PM to 5PM, during the weekend and on public holidays, from 11AM to 6PM mundaneum Rue de Nimy, 76 – 7000 Mons www.mundaneum.be We live in world governed by data. The amount of data has become such that we are struggling to grasp the complexity of this new reality. In order to face this considerable change in scale, a new discipline, known as “data mapping” has appeared and is growing considerably with the multiplication of I.T. tools and the advent of the Internet, the digital society and Big Data. The exhibition offers an interactive journey into the heart of information. As they roam these data maps made up of stunning images, the visitors are immersed into a visual universe that uses a common graphic language and which bears many similarities with the principles of geometric abstraction used by Mondrian, Malevitch or other modern artists. The exhibition playfully and prospectively reveals graphic universes causing you to reflect and reconsider the very nature of knowledge. It retraces the history of the discipline from its early pioneers to today’s anticipations with an approach mixing disciplines: art, science, information architecture. Indeed, the visionary endeavour of Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine’s Mundaneum aimed at bringing together the entirety of knowledge and at devising a methodical response to the ever-growing accumulation of new knowledge. This would lead a few decades later to the advent of the Information Society. In the heart of the Mundaneum, in a place dedicated to memory, the exhibition “Mapping Knowledge” casts a look at the complexity of the world we live in. Michel Jamsin – Retro(per)spective 2

www.bam.mons.be

The half European, half American artist Terry Fox (19432008) was a major figure of the artistic scene of the seventies. He had a decisive impulse on European performance, video and sonic art. He worked with some of the most influential artists of his time, including major figures such as Joseph Beuys, Vito Acconci or Dennis Oppenheim. The exhibition entitled “early videographers” creates a resonance link between the works of Terry Fox and a selection of Bill Viola’s video installations, for indeed the two often collaborated, confronting their revolutionary ideas and their approaches to art. Mixing archival footage and pure creation, the exhibition shows how Bill Viola used video solely as a form of artistic expression whereas Terry Fox used it to both keep a documentary trace of his performances and as a starting point for new creations, playing with the multiple possibilities provided by this medium.

Sightseeing tours in mons and its surroundings Garouste

A Don Qixote between myth and reality (working title)

visitMons invites you to come and discover the rich patrimony of Mons and its surroundings on one of the sightseeing tours it has to offer

Open from 25 September 2016 to 8 January 2017, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10AM to 6PM BAM (Beaux-Arts Mons) Rue Neuve, 8 – 7000 Mons www.bam.mons.be Mons is a city deeply grounded in its time. Nonetheless it proudly cultivates its history, its patrimony and its identity. In a city where myths and legends play such an important role, it is fundamental to see how a major international artist can approach great historical themes and figures and render them contemporary using the magic of his palette. In 2000 and 2006 Gérard Garouste carried out the integration of 2 works of art within the City Hall of Mons, both dedicated the myth of Saint Georges and the Dragon and directly related to the Doudou Museum. The leading thread of this exhibition held at the BAM lies in the rapport the painter has with the eccentric figure of Don Qixote, which Cervantes invented in the 16th Century. His style - mixing associations, imagination and riddles - also draws some of its inspiration from great religious texts such as the Bible or the Talmud. Somewhere between sacred and secular literature, Garouste proves himself to be a genuine bookworm, a lover of rare and precious books. Among the other great narratives evoked, his figurative art also allows us to glance into Dante’s inferno. His painting amazes us both for its gigantism and for the virtuosity of his style. From the birth of a hero to fighting knights and saints, the exhibition leads the visitor around a maze, which - just like Don Qixote - blurs the lines separating myth, religion and reality. One might think that there also lies part of the magic the Doudou. Van Gogh in the Borinage From €39.50/pers. Depending on the menu chosen (min. 20 people.) It was during his two-year stay in the region of Mons – from 1878 to 1880 - that Vincent van Gogh, after a failed attempt at becoming an evangelist, decided to become the artist we all know and admire. The short time he spent there was the starting point of his artistic career. The house in the swamps and the surrounding landscapes shrouded in an aura tainted with rural and mining references left traces that pervaded his works all along his life. This guided coach tour will allow you to discover the area around Mons and the the different sites where the artist set foot, with the comments of an onboard guide from the tourist office.
