Mons, love at first sight In the heart of Europe, a few dozen kilometres from Brussels, Mons holds within its walls treasures acquired over centuries which are definitely worth an extensive visit. Its numerous monuments, churches and individual houses bare witness to its glorious history. Start off from the Square du Château where the Belfry stands and gaze down on the city and its surroundings. Then, give in to the temptation of its old streets, parks and gardens. Discover the riches of its architecture, both civil and religious; especially its 12 churches and chapels, including Saint-Waudru Collegiate Church, a remarkable Gothic edifice, and the City Hall, which dates back to the 15th century. Go and discover the rich collections of its museums. Then have a break and relax at a cosy restaurant table where fine food and gastronomy prevail. You will come back to Mons to experience the exhilaration of its traditional celebrations which are such a source of joy for its population. Once you will have done all of this, you will understand and, hopefully, love what makes our city so unique and so youthful. See you on 11 June 2017 for the “Doudou” - the “Ducasse” of Mons - with its plurisecular procession of the “Car d’Or” and St-George’s Legendary fight with the dragon, also known as the “Lumeçon”.

Mons will surprise you in so many ways and its poetry is among the most beautiful of the surprises waiting for you… this tour is tailor-made for those who are passionate about literature. Those Montois and Montoises have marked their time and distinguished themselves in fields as diverse as astronomy, botanics, mathematics, engineering or music. Some, like Roland de Lassus, were stars of their era and their fame transcends time. Many others remained virtually unknown to the general public, but still have changed the world in their own way. Although history forgets a lot of them, let us today talk about some Montois and Montoises who climbed to the rank of «Superstar» because all had large-scale ideas and had the audacity to invent, the bravery to believe in their ideals and beliefs. Discover their faces, their lives and their actions in particular.

Belfry Rue des Gades – 7000 Mons Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm www.beffroi.mons.be The Belfry of Mons, which was recognized by UNESCO in 1999, is an emblematic landmark of the city’s landscape. It is the only baroque belfry to have ever been built in Belgium. After 30 years of restoration, it was finally reopened to the public in 2015. An interpretation center dedicated to its history and the process of its acknowledgement as a world heritage site allows visitors to better understand its atypical history. A panoramic lift allows visitors – including those with reduced mobility – to easily access the entirety of the tour. A permanent exhibition – comprising innovative multimedia installations, panels and some items from the city’s collections – makes it come back to life… The visit will also allow you to have a unique view down on the city and its surroundings. Prices: Group price (minimum 10 people): €6 School price: €2 Guided tour (1h30): €65/guide from Tuesday to Saturday; €80/guide on Sundays and public holidays. The « Maison du Marais » (House in the Swamps), where Van Gogh lived from August 1879 to October 1880, almost disappeared due to the poor condition it was in. It was saved from ruin by a group of volunteers from 1972 to 1975. After years of rehabilitation work, the house – with its brand new scenography - is now once again open to visitors. Not to be missed: you’ll be able to see replicas of the works the artist produced during his stay in the Borinage, as well as his literary preferences, facsimiles of some of the letters from his correspondence and a room with period furniture. Van Gogh house – Wasmes Rue Wilson, 221 - 7340 Wasmes (Colfontaine) Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm On weekdays, only group visits (booking required) (except on Mondays and Wednesdays afternoons) In December 1878, Vincent Van Gogh moved into a room with a view on the Marcasse coal-mining site. The house belonged to a local baker called Jean-Baptiste Denis. At this time, Van Gogh was fully devoted to his evangelical mission, alternating Bible readings, religious ceremonies, visiting sick people and preaching. The house in Wasmes had been in danger of falling into ruin © visitMons / Grégory Mathelot for years. All that remained were the front wall and the front flap of the roof, which could barely hold on to the few remains of the roof structure. The Mons 2015 Foundation, the city of Colfontaine – which took part in the project – and companies sponsoring the foundation were, therefore, intent on recreating the spirit of the place, rather than on restoring the place itself, for which there remained no plans or historical records anyway. Maison Losseau (Losseau house) Rue de Nimy, 37, 39, 41 – 7000 Mons Open Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 6pm Saturday from 1pm to 6pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm For exceptional closures, see the website www.maisonlosseau.be Léon Losseau (1869-1949) was a Mons lawyer, bibliophile, photographer, member of many learned societies. This intellectual turned his house into a jewel of Art Nouveau, with every conceivable comfort in his time. Today, passers-by are often intrigued by the lavishly decorated portal of the town house. Few of them suspect that by crossing the metal doors adorned with fuchsia patterns, they will be thrown into a poetic garden populated with orchids and wisteria, which are present from floor to ceiling in every room of the house. The residence is unique thanks to the talents of architects, decorators and craftsmen chosen by its owner (Paul Saintenoy, Henri Sauvage, Emile Gallé, etc.). Part of the List of Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia, it underwent important restoration and development work commissioned by the Province of Hainaut. In summer, the garden is a green oasis to stroll in on weekends hosted by the Guinguette litteraire. And what if we went for peace? Pacifism in Belgium, past and present From 16 September 2016 to 14 May 2017 Open from Tuesday to Friday from 1pm to 5pm, on weekends and public holidays from 11am to 6pm Mundaneum Rue de Nimy, 76 – 7000 Mons www.mundaneum.be The Belgians who have shed their blood during the war are regularly commemorated, but who remembers those who fought for peace? How many remember that Belgium has four Nobel Peace Prizes to its name (including Henri La Fontaine)? That Belgian pacifists greatly contributed to the creation of international institutions aimed at preventing conflicts? That, in the early 1980s, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated against nuclear missiles? That numerous wars (Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq...) generated the mobilisation of citizens? The 300 documents presented here (posters, photographs, animated images...), including many rare originals, highlight the action of those who dared to go for peace and defended what is often considered a quixotic hope. From the 19th century to the present day, there are many who feel that waiting for peace is not enough. They offer concrete or utopian solutions, to achieve it (by establishing international law, education and culture, the merger of people, the removal of inequalities). For others, peace can only be achieved by banning violence, synonym of war by definition. It’s the choice operated individually by conscientious objectors and “absolute” pacifists who turn non-violence into a combat method. Action for peace also means denouncing war and its corollaries: the army, the arms race, but also political or economic imperialism at the origin of numerous conflicts. At a time when Belgium is involved in military operations abroad, this exhibition is very relevant. It highlights the permanence of the issues discussed by pacifist movements since the 19th century, questions the notion of peace itself and intends to generate a critical reflection on the various uses and ways it was picked up for other purposes. For the duration of the exhibition, activities (seminars, conferences, debates, theatre shows) will be organised around the theme of peace. Prices: Group: €4 – Family: €2 – School price: €2 Guided tours: (maximum 25 people - incl. entrance.) What did the soldiers eat on the front? Which food could the civilians in the occupied zone eat? In those troubled times, food becomes a permanent concern. More or less tasty ersatz replace rationed food, national and international food aid develops, while the Montois began to grow vegetables in their garden. The Dynamusee, educational service of the Mons Museum Cluster, offers themed tours and activities adapted to the age of the participants or based on the teacher’s requests: they are focused on specific themes related to exhibitions and museums and followed by creative workshops. The theme then becomes concrete and allows everyone to achieve, create, try new techniques while giving free rein to their imagination. Price: €5 /participant (entry, tour and workshop included) Reservation required: 065/40.53.38 ou dynamusee@ville.mons.be

GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS Bookings Booking requests can be made from Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:30pm (except public holidays) and must be confirmed in writing (email or letter) 15 days before the chosen date. In this written notice, the date, the time and the language of the visit must be specified as well as the number of people and the group’s profile (children, adults, seniors, specific features, etc.). We draw your attention to the fact that delivery of the application form should not be equated with confirmation of your visit. Written confirmation will then be sent by the Tourist Office to the group leader. Any groups which don’t receive this document 10 days before their visit are requested to contact the bookings department on + 32/(0)65 33 55 80. On the day of the visit, group heads should go to the place mentioned on the data sheet and should have this sheet with them. As part of the excursions (days with lunch), a deposit equal to half the total amount is to be paid no later than 10 days before the visit (as advised in the official confirmation signed by the management). The name of the group and the date of the visit must appear in communications. The balance will be paid upon the group’s arrival (in cash or via debit card only). If the deposit is not paid, the booking will not be taken into account. In the event of cancellation (except in cases of force majeure) within 8 days from the date on which services are rendered, this deposit shall be retained by the Tourist Office (as a penalty). In the event where, on the day of the visit, the group is below the required minimum of 20 people, the Tourist Office shall bill the same amount as if 20 people actually participated, on a lump-sum basis. For guided tours, all documentation (services(s) of guide(s) and/or tickets) is to be paid in advance to the Tourist Office: - by bank transfer to the account number, no later than 10 calendar days before the visit; likewise, the reference number, the name of the group and the date of the visit should appear in communications. - by credit card (Visa/Mastercard) no later than three working days before the visit by phone on + 32 (0)65 40 53 48 from Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.30pm. - by billing for schools, administrations and businesses only after the Tourist Office’s approval. After sending confirmation, you will receive a PRO FORMA invoice to be paid no later than 10 calendar days before the visit to avoid cancellation of the booking. The number of registered participants will therefore be billed; the number cannot be changed. Groups wishing to receive a receipted invoice should mention this in their booking form and forward their contact information for the invoice to be sent (name and first name of the treasurer, phone number, e-mail address, postal address, VAT number (if necessary) and any note the group wishes to be included). A guide can take care of one to 20 people. Beyond 20 people, a second guide must be booked. All ticket purchases are final and non-refundable. Delays In case of a delay, please notify: - from Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 5:30pm, the visitMons reception service on +32 (0)65 40 53 48. - on Saturdays between 9:30am and 5:30pm, the visitMons reception on +32 (0)65 33 55 80. - on Sundays and public holidays between 9:30am and 4:30pm (from 1 November to 31 March) or between 9.30am and 5.30pm (from 1 April to 31 October), the visitMons reception on +32 (0)65 33 55 80. - during out of office hours, the guide (contact information listed on written confirmation of the visit). In this case, the tour can be shortened or extended depending on the guide’s availability. After waiting 30 minutes without news from the group, the guide will no longer be available and the visit will be payable in full (except in cases of force majeure). Cancellations Cancellations must be received at least eight working days before the date of the visit (except in cases of force majeure). They must be made exclusively in writing (email or letter), the date of the post or e-mail being proof. For any booking not cancelled on time and if the group does not show up on day of the visit (except in cases of force majeure), the payment will not be refunded and the services of the guide(s) and meals (for excursions) will be charged to you. The payment shall be retained by the Tourist Office. Prices Tour prices only include the services of guides and potentially entries to museum(s)/exhibition(s). Excursion prices are ‘all-inclusive’ excluding transport and drinks: visits, guide(s), admission fees to various programme sites agreed with the Tourist Office, lunch (except drinks) and documentation (except private purchases) are services included.
