B e c a u s e o f t h e Te n n e e s s e r u n s t h r o u g h C h a t t a n o o g a , t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f t h e Te n n e s s e e Va l l e y A u t h o r i t y p l a y s an important role in the growth of Chattanooga. It does not only help to settle flood conditions along the river, but it also improve the navigability for heavy freight that greatly promotes the economic growth. (Stettler, 2001)
C h a t t a n o o g a i s Te n n e s s e e ’ s f o u r t h l a r g e s t c i t y, w i t h a population 177,571 in 2016, and it covers an area of 143.2 square miles. It is is located in the southern end o f t h e Te n n e s s e e Va l l e y w h e r e t h e Te n n e s s e e R i v e r c u t s through the Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Plat e a u . W i t h i t s p r o x i m i t y t o t h e Te n n e s s e e R i v e r , i t h a s always been one of the city’s greatest assets. (Eichenthal, 2008) Chattanooga has gone through many changes since the 1800s. It’s development started as an industrial center and now it has developed into a service centre and transportation hub. Looking from the regional context, Chattanooga is set on a Cumberland Plateau, which is also an area of Chat-

In 1828, the Ross’s Landing is built that allowed water transport. I n 1 8 3 9 , “ To w n o f C h a t t a n o o g a ” i s officially established.

A DECLINE DURING CIVIL WAR AND SERIOUS FLOOD
It is a period that Chattanooga suffered from a decline during civil war and flood periods - major railways developed to open up Chattanooga - crutchfield house, as the first hotel in Chattanoog was built 1861-65 civiil war 1867: major flood 1870 rise of iron industries 1878 yellow fever epidemic 1 8 8 6 : T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Te n n e s e e a t C h a t t a n o o g a w a s established. 1891: The Walnut Street Bridge opens
