In 2024 we welcome our community and all visitors to explore Maitland Regional Art Gallery in new ways. We have extended our exhibition program for longer periods creating the time and space for artists to make new work, reach out to our audience and take part in more workshops and education programs. Our collection will be presented in almost every exhibition onsite this year sitting alongside the work of leading artists from the region and beyond. We begin the year celebrating the art of collecting through the work of Simone Rosenbauer’s Small Museum, a tender salute to all those who care for and continue to collect, the significant and curious things we memorialise and cherish. This exhibition is also presented alongside a Dobell exhibition grant from Museums and Galleries NSW with three artists, Rosie Deacon, Billy Bain and Kara Wood commissioned to make work in response to some of Maitland’s local cultural collections. Without doubt, one of the major highlights for the Gallery this year is the long-term loan and display of Ron Mueck’s Pregnant woman, 2002. This significant work of art is on loan from the National Gallery of Australia through the Sharing the National Collection program. Over the year, this monumental sculpture will engage with our own collection with exhibitions designed to allow for different conversations and

ideas related to family (in all its diverse forms), motherhood, birth and the marvel of humanity. There are so many highlights for 2024 including Old Stories New Magic, an exhibition that will enchant us all as we bring together artists who draw from the deep and ancient well of the real and the mythic. Lineage pays honour to the exceptional artists across generations with an exhibition curated by Euan Macleod. In November, we host a major exhibition of Robert Fielding, artist, storyteller and a keeper of culture and knowledge. Descendant to the first Afghan cameleers, and the Yankunytjatjara and Western Arrenda people of the central desert, Fielding lives and works in Mimili Community on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Over the past decade, he has built an eclectic and vast catalogue of works spanning and expanding the fields of paint, print, photography, poetry, drawing, film and sculpture, much of which is now housed in national and international institutions and collections. This exhibition will be one of the major highlights of 2024 and not to be missed.

THE BETWEEN DEIDRE BUT-HUSAIM The state of 'in between' seems to be a common shared experience of our recent times. Pre-covid, post-covid and that place between. In this exhibition, Diedre But-Husaim documents life in her studio during various stages over the past few years: from the studio looking out at the heavily fragranced Angel's trumpets in various stages of bloom or looking inwards with images of her studio paint brushes standing to attention waiting to be called to duty.

MYTH MAKING KATE ROHDE TROY EMERY The subjects of mythology have long provided artists with a rich source of inspiration for depiction and reinvention. For Myth Making, artists Kate Rohde and Troy Emery have sought inspiration directly from the land and ecology of the Wimmera and Grampians regions of Victoria. Returning to their studios they embarked on a journey of collaboration to create a new mythology of Western Victoria influenced by the traditions of European myth making and imbued with their own recognisable, whimsical, and at times dark, artistic practices.

“ The camera and a picture, whether moving or still, have the potential to generate intimacy and attachment. I am interested in how making images can motivate us to come together during a crisis” – CHERINE FAHD

Simone Rosenbauer, SM05.02.067

SMALL MUSEUM SIMONE ROSENBAUER Simone Rosenbauer's Small Museum takes us inside the world of true collectors. This is an exhibition of photographs taken of 41 community museums across Australia. These images highlight the buildings, people, and collections within them. Small Museum fosters an appreciation and understanding for the lesser known cultural treasures that are embedded within these community collections. By shining a spotlight on these often overlooked institutions, the project celebrates their role in preserving local heritage, history, and identity through contemporary art.

Taking its cue from Simone Rosenbauer’s Small Museums, we commissioned three artists to develop artistic interventions in response to items within local historic collections. This exhibition is supported by the Dobell Exhibition Grant, funded by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation and managed by Museums & Galleries of NSW.

her depictions of ‘mamu’ represent the spirit forces that are both ancient, real and present in Anangu life today. The work of Naomi Kantjurinyi will be shown alongside other artists who work in the realm of old stories. From the surreal conjuring of Michelle Gearin and Sarker Protick to the folkloric but thoroughly contemporary work of Linde Ivimey, Adam Lee and Julia Robinson. This is an exhibition that embraces old stories and explores our longing and fascination with other worlds and beings, the dreamy sub-conscious and the long-lasting presence of the ancient.

POWER The Future is Here

DENNIS GOLDING POWER – The Future is Here is the result of a collaboration between artist Dennis Golding and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Alexandria Park Community School and curated by Kyra Kum-Sing. The superhero capes were created during a workshop in 2020, led by Golding who was an artist in residence at the school through Solid Ground. Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 designed their capes with iconography informed by their lived experiences and cultural identity.

As superheroes, Golding and his young collaborators are empowered and reminded of the strength of their culture in forming their identity and connection to Country. Individually and together, the capes critique social, political and cultural representations of contemporary First Nations experience.

A Solid Ground project with Dennis Golding and Alexandria Park Community School, curated by Kyra Kum-Sing, presented by Carriageworks and Blacktown Arts, and touring with Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.
