WHAT ARE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. They are tools that protect employees against various risks in the workplace. These can be divided into three categories:
CATEGORY 1: PPE of simple design
These are PPE that are easy to use and offer protection against general, not too serious risks. This PPE is intended for situations where the risk is low and protection can be achieved relatively easily. Consider, for example, a rain suit or gardening gloves.
CATEGORY 2: PPE for medium risks
This category includes PPE for situations where the risk is moderate and extra protection is needed.
The design of this PPE can be slightly more complex to meet the required protection.
Examples are:
6
• Safety glasses that provide protection against dust, splinters and light impacts.
• Gloves that provide protection against, for example, cutting and abrasion.
CATEGORY 3: PPE of complex design
These are advanced PPE designed for situations where the risk is high and complex. This PPE may incorporate more technology and advanced materials to provide a high level of protection. Examples of complex PPE are:
• Respiratory masks: Protect the respiratory tract against dust, fumes or toxic gases.
• Hearing protectors: Reduce noise levels to prevent hearing damage.
• Chemical protective clothing: Provides protection against hazardous chemicals.
• Personal fall protection systems: Preventing falls when working at height.
The use of PPE is essential to ensure the safety and health of workers and to prevent injury or damage to health when performing risky tasks in the workplace. Employees must always wear and use the correct PPE in accordance with the instructions of their employer and the PPE manufacturer.

EXPLANATION ARM AND HAND PROTECTION
Every glove tested must be certified according to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulation (EU) 2016/425. The regulation of gloves starts with the European standard EN ISO 21420:2020, which describes the general requirements and test methods.
EN ISO 21420:2020 – General requirements and test methods
This standard contains the general requirements that gloves must meet. The standard specifies the basic requirements for a glove, such as design and construction, comfort and effectiveness, marking and information that apply to all protective gloves.
Below you will find an overview of the most important standards that apply to OXXA gloves.
EN 388:2016+A1:2018 - Protection against mechanical risks
This standard defines the performance values for the resistance of gloves to mechanical risks such as abrasion, cutting, tearing, puncture and, if applicable, impact. Below the icon are four numbers and two letters that indicate the performance level for a specific risk.*
EN388:2016+A1:2018
Cut
(‘P’ for ‘Passed’. No level is stated if the glove fails the impact test)
EN 511:2006 – Protection against cold
This standard applies to gloves that protect the hands against conductive and contact cold up to -50°C. Protection against cold is indicated by an icon, followed by a series of three performance levels, which refer to specific protective properties*.
*Note:
0: Indicates that the glove is below the minimum performance level for the hazard in question falls.
X : Indicates that the glove has not been tested or that the test method is not appropriate for the glove design or material.

EN 407:2020 – Protection against thermal risks (heat and/or fire)
This standard defines the thermal performance levels, test methods and markings for gloves that protect against thermal risks.
The nature and degree of protection is indicated by an icon, followed by a series of performance levels that refer to specific protective properties.
A new pictogram has been introduced for gloves where limited flame spread is not claimed (protection against heat without flame).
EN 12477:2001+A1:2005 – Protective gloves for welders
This standard applies to protective gloves for manual welding and cutting of metals and for related processes. Type B gloves are recommended when high dexterity is required, for example TIG welding, while type A gloves are recommended for other welding processes that generate more heat. (e.g. MIG/MAG welding).

WORKWEAR
Everyone must be able to do his or her work in a safe and comfortable manner. Wearing good company clothing contributes greatly to this. The nature of the work, working conditions, weather influences, safety regulations and personal preferences play an important role in choosing the right work clothing. OXXA® responds to this with a wide range of professional work clothing.
23 oxxa.work
EXPLANATION WORKWEAR
EN ISO 13688:2013+A1:2021 – General requirements
This standard describes the general requirements that protective clothing must meet. This international standard specifies the general requirements in the areas of ergonomics, compatibility, obsolescence, size designation, marking of protective clothing and the information that must be supplied by the manufacturer with the protective clothing.
Below you will find an overview of the most important standards that apply to OXXA clothing.
EN 343:2019 – Protection against rain
EN 343:2019
EN ISO 20471: 2013+A1:2016
This standard specifies the requirements and test methods for materials and seams of clothing that protect against precipitation (rain, snow), fog and the moisture of the ground.
The symbol of this standard is an umbrella, with three values above each other, an X and a Y.
The X value indicates the waterproofness (4 classes) and the Y value indicates the water vapor permeability (4 classes) (breathability). The R-value is optional and indicates whether the finished product has been tested with the rain tower test.
Note: An “ X ” indicates that the clothing has not been tested for this.
EN ISO 20471:2013+A1:2016 – High visibility clothing
This standard establishes requirements for clothing designed to visually emphasize the user's presence in order to make him more conspicuous in dangerous situations, both day and night (illumination from car headlights).
The symbol of this standard is the safety vest, with a value (x) next to it. The number next to the icon indicates which class the item falls into. That depends on the minimum surface area of fluorescent and reflective material:
EN 13034:2005 +A1:2009
EN 13034:2005+A1:2009 - Protective clothing against liquid chemicals type 6 from PB (6)
This standard specifies the requirements and test methods for type 6 chemical protective clothing. Type 6 clothing is clothing that provides limited protection against small splashes or a light mist of chemical liquids. In general, this clothing will be made of liquid-repellent, but not completely liquid-tight materials.

EN ISO 14116: 2015
EN ISO 14116:2015 – Protective clothing with limited flame spread
This standard specifies the performance requirements for the limited flame spread properties of materials, composite materials and protective clothing to limit the risk of ignition of the clothing. The wearer may not sustain additional injuries due to his clothing burning. Protective clothing that complies with this standard must protect workers against occasional and brief contact with small flames, in conditions where there is no significant heat hazard and no other heat sources are present.
EN ISO 11612:2015 – Protective clothing against heat and flames
EN ISO 11612: 2015
EN ISO 11611: 2015
This standard specifies the performance requirements for protective clothing that must protect the wearer's body (except the hands) against heat and/or flame. The standard contains a number of tests regarding the cloth. The results of these tests are represented by the letters A, B, C, D, E and F.
A = Flame Spread (2 Levels)
B = Convective Heat (3 Levels)
C = Radiant Heat (4 Levels)
D = Molten metal (aluminum) (3 Levels)
E = Molten metal (iron) (3 Levels)
F = Contact Heat (3 Levels)
Note: If a letter is not mentioned, or the class is '0', then the lowest value has not been achieved, or the test has not been carried out; the clothing then offers no protection against this property.
EN ISO 11611:2015 – Protective clothing for use in welding and related processes
This standard specifies the requirements for welder's clothing. This concerns clothing that can be worn for a whole day (8 hours) at normal temperatures and offers protection against small splashes of molten metal, accidental flame contact and UV radiation.
The standard has two classes.
Class 1 (lowest Level): less dangerous welding situations
Class 2 (higher Level): more dangerous welding situations
Class X
EN 1149-5: 2018
EN 1149-5:2018 – Protective clothing with electrostatic properties
Anti-static safety clothing prevents sparks caused by electrostatic charges, which can cause fire or explosions. The EN 1149-5 is an umbrella standard. This standard is part of a series of standards regarding: various applications and materials.

HEARING PROTECTION
Using the right hearing protection correctly is very important. That may sound like a bad pun, but there is some truth in it. There are a number of things you should pay attention to when choosing, buying and wearing earplugs or earmuffs.
29 oxxa.work
EXPLANATION HEARING PROTECTION
WHEN IS NOISE HARMFUL?
The limit value (legal standard) is 80 dB(A) with an exposure of 8 hours per day. At this Level, the employer must provide hearing protection equipment.
From 85 dB(A) the noise is "harmful" and the employer must take technical-organizational measures, such as making it clear at workplaces using pictograms that hearing protection is mandatory. Please note that noise exposure is not only harmful to hearing.
WHAT IS DB(A)?
dB(A) is the unit for the loudness of sound adapted to the sensitivity of the human ear. The reason that the dB(A) is used instead of a normal decibel in noise measurements and noise calculations has to do with the sensitivity of the (human) ear, which is different for the different frequencies of the sound. sound is not the same.
Here you will find a table showing the maximum exposure time at a certain sound pressure without being harmful.
WHAT IS SNR-VALUE?
SNR is a single number rating system (Single Number Rating), according to the international standard ISO 4869. SNRs are expressed in decibels (dBs) and are used as a guideline for comparing the degree of noise reduction capabilities of different hearing protectors.
The SNR is subtracted from an average weighted sound level to measure the amount of sound pressure at the ear when wearing the hearing protector. This is explained below with some examples.
- = 90 dB(A) Insufficient protection - = 84 dB(A) Good protection - = 73 dB(A) Overprotection

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Many professions involve working in an environment with polluted air. Wearing the correct respiratory protective equipment is essential for personal health in such situations.
33 oxxa.work
EXPLANATION RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Dust masks cover the mouth, nose and chin. After use, maintenance-free dust masks are thrown away and replaced. There are dust masks that can be folded and there are dust masks that are preformed, the so-called 'Cup' models. A dust mask may also be equipped with an exhalation valve. An exhalation valve on a dust mask has several comfort-enhancing functions: reducing exhalation resistance, reducing CO2 levels inside the mask and reducing temperature and humidity inside the mask.
Dust masks only protect against solid particles, fibres, micro-organisms, mists and aerosols, not against fumes from paint, for example.
There are three dust protection classes that are indicated by the so-called FFP (Filtering Facepiece Particles) coding (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3). The inward leakage determines the degree of protection that the dust mask can provide.
FFP1
Light protection against dust particles from inert materials. Maximum accepted concentration of pollutants: 4x the limit value.
FFP2
Optimal protection against dust particles of harmful substances. Maximum accepted concentration of pollutants: 10x the limit value.
FFP3
Maximum protection against dust particles from toxic to highly toxic substances. Maximum accepted concentration of pollutants: 50x the limit value.
ADDITIONAL CODING FOR (DUST) MASKS
The coding of a dust mask has various additional indications. First, an indication showing whether the mask is reusable or not. R stands for 'Re-usable particle filtering half-mask' (reusable) and NR stands for 'Non Re-usable particle filtering half-mask' (not reusable). (Dust) masks with the code R can be used multiple times and (dust) masks with the code NR can only be used during 1 shift. Secondly, masks that have undergone the Dolomite test (durability test of the filter) have a code D. This test indicates that the filter does not 'close' (clog) too quickly. Such a mask may be used several times within an 8-hour working day

LEG AND FOOT PROTECTION
Injuries or wounds to the feet are extremely annoying. You want to prevent that. Workshops and construction sites can pose a danger to your feet. For example, consider nails and other sharp objects lying on the ground. Or heavy objects that could fall on your foot. A safety shoe then offers protection. That works so safely.
37 oxxa.work
EXPLANATION LEG AND FOOT PROTECTION
The type of safety shoe must be determined depending on the type of work and the danger it poses. Safety shoes are often indicated with the S-coding (In accordance with EN ISO 20345:2022).
Below you will find an overview of the various codes for safety shoes:

HEAD PROTECTION
In many professions the risk of head injury is always lurking. Wearing good head protection, such as safety helmets and bump caps, is literally an absolute necessity in many industries and sectors.
41 oxxa.work
EXPLANATION HEAD PROTECTION
WEARING A SAFETY HELMET IS MANDATORY:
• In places where this is indicated by a sign
• Where there is an increased risk of impact or crushing of the head
• Where there is a risk of being hit by falling and/or flying objects
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY HELMETS
Industrial safety helmets are primarily intended to protect the wearer against falling, toppling or shooting objects and therefore to limit brain and other head injuries. A safety helmet consists of a helmet shell, a visor, an interior, shockabsorbing padding in the edges and a back strap and must be equipped with an adjustment option. A safety helmet must comply with the European standard EN 397:2012+A1:2012 “Industrial safety helmets” and has a CE marking.
MATERIALS OF THE SAFETY HELMET
Extensive requirements for the material and design of the helmets are also stated in the EN 397:2012+A1:2012 standard. The safety helmets are made of certain types of plastic, partly due to the fact that these plastics do not conduct electricity. OXXA helmets fall into the Thermoplastics category. These are plastics that can be formed in a liquid-plastic state at certain temperatures. The types of materials used in OXXA helmets are polyethylene (PE) and polymariate (ABS).
BUMP CAPS
A bump cap is a lightweight cap with a simple interior. The bump cap only offers protection to the head against impact with static objects or structures. The bump cap, also called a bump cap, can be designed as a light plastic shell with the same interior or as a baseball cap with fabric on the outside and a plastic shell on the inside that fits directly to the head. A bump cap does not provide protection against falling objects or other hazards. They are therefore not suitable as a safety helmet and cannot be used as such. An industrial bump cap should therefore never be confused with an industrial safety helmet. Extensive requirements for the material and design of bump caps are stated in the EN 812:2012 standard.

EYE AND FACIAL PROTECTION
Eyes are one of the most vulnerable senses. Eye accidents regularly occur in the Netherlands every year, causing permanent damage, such as loss of vision. Eye protection is therefore extremely important in working environments where eyes are at risk. Consider, for example: splinters, acid splashes, lasers and hot liquids. Protect your eyes by wearing safety goggles or face shield.

EXPLANATION EYE AND FACIAL PROTECTION
Safety glasses with or without correction lenses must be examined and certified by an independent laboratory. Based on this investigation, the performance of the equipment may be disclosed based on the criteria of guideline EN 166:2001. All markings on both the glazing and the frames must be permanently and clearly legible. Every user must therefore be able to determine the suitability for the application. The frame and glazing are marked separately. If the glazing and the frame form a whole, the marking is applied to the frame.
The marking of the frame must include the CE symbol and the identity of the manufacturer (logo or brand name). If glasses refer to an EN standard, the EN standard number is mandatory with the various symbols of the field of application and the mechanical resistance according to tests requested by the manufacturer. According to the European standard EN 166:2001, safety glasses may have the following markings on the frame and lenses.

FALL PROTECTION
Fall protection means the use of the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) that can prevent or break a fall. Because the consequences of a fall can be serious. Sometimes it can even lead to permanent injury. Professional fall protection is essential for safe working conditions at height.
49 oxxa.work
EXPLANATION FALL PROTECTION
Working at height is risky. The consequences of a fall are usually serious and often lead to permanent injuries. Prevention of falling accidents is therefore important. This can be done by avoiding work at height as much as possible. If this is not possible, there are collective and personal protective equipment.
GUIDELINES FOR WORKING AT HEIGHT:
• Avoid working at heights, if possible
• Use other means, such as safety rails, to prevent falls if working at height cannot be avoided
• Use personal protective equipment to avoid dangerous situations
• Use personal fall protection, which minimizes the distance and force of the fall in the event of a fall
The use of fall protection is mandatory from a height of 2.5 meters if there is a risk of falling and no other safety measures can be taken.
Complete fall protection equipment always consists of at least the following components:
1. A harness belt
2. A connecting agent
3. An anchoring facility
ATTENTION!
The choice of fall protection is always determined by the conditions at the workplace and the nature of the work.
